I hate sharing gear. All 16 of my dudes have their own Exotic or Ascended set. That said they’re not all tip-top either and I’ll probably use Rage Runes for my Revenant alts and keep the Strength ones in the Ascended gear on my Revenant Main.

Run something like this swapping in Zerker for Cavalier when doing something “srs.”

Only part I’m flip-floppin on is Strength Runes vs Rage Runes.

I like Rage Runes. Right setup I’m at 250% crit damage and 2500 power. However on the flipside the Strength Runes passively add 45% Might duration on top of 15% from Herald which means +60% Might duration which is quite a bit where as the Fury duration seems wasted with Perma Fury. That’s on top of the fact that in a Strength setup I’m at 2700 Power and still 238% crit damage.

In terms of raw, physical DPS it’ll likely continue to be Berserker. The Berserker Meta largely revolved around dodging/avoiding damage entirely rather than mitigating it at all. Cavalier would reduce your over all Power (since Toughness is primary stat) and while Valkyrie would be nice the extra HP is pretty pointless in areas like high end fractals with massive damage with no Toughness to mitigate it.

The real question is what will the new meta actually shake out as? If they increase Toughness on mobs that favors Condition based damage not power based. How would increased Precision work on mobs? Does that mean you need to play perfectly or go down? What if avoiding certain mechanics was impossible? Then there’s Raids which are an entirely other beast. They’ve stated that there’s going to be encounters where you want a tank to sit there and tank something and Revenant, through Jalis, has some amazing tanking tools. Time really going to be the real tell on this.

So this is what they meant by destroy the Berserker Meta. Make it so the content that Berserker excels at isn’t run anymore in favor of much more rewarding content that requires different gear.

I like the elegance of this solution.

Why PPK is a bad idea for WvW

in WvW

Posted by: Kodiak.3281

Kodiak.3281

I disagree. When we start looking at the PPK in context of the recent Kill / Death information we start to see a completely different picture on a lot of match ups. For example in Tier 1 we’d be looking at only a 5k spread between BG and JQ instead of a 11k one. That’s a lot of points and shows that while BlackGate is doing very well in terms of kills and match up performance against other servers they simply lack the coverage to keep things going.

That’s beside the point. If they wanted to keep dungeons viable for daily play and handle inflation they could’ve easily changed/replaced rewards, instead they’re just removing. This has jack kitten to do with inflation and is just aimed at getting rid of dungeons.

They are doing exactly that, though. They are changing/replacing the rewards and moving them elsewhere. They didn’t specify where those rewards are going. They also only mentioned reducing (not removing) the liquid (gold) rewards for doing dungeons and again moving them elsewhere. What that means specifically and where they moved them to we’ll likely not see until 10/23.

Yes, This is what I feared, the ideer is good. But that logic only work in a sustem where we all start from 0. Only problem there is that some of us already have a nice pile of gold and then it is a whole other thing.

It seems end goal is forcing people to do everything and not just focus on the part of the content they find fun. I can see the logic in this from one point of view, but I dont like being forced to do anything

All the map reward system is open up a third route to get items. Right now you got a choice between farm whatever drops an item or farm gold and buy the item. That’s it. The new map system gives you a third route by letting you farm a map’s events and what not and get those rewards.

The biggest impact this has is on items that weren’t easily farmed before we now have a reliable way to farm them. A great example is Silver Doubloons. Your only two choices to reliably get these are to park level 20ish alts at a JP Chest and farm it or go farm equivalent gold and just buy it from those that do. The map reward system opens a third path, grinding the specific map for rewards instead.

However the previous two options still exist. You can still go farm Silver Doubloons in chests on lower alts. You can still go farm Gold and outright buy them instead…just not from dungeons haha

Not saying I like the change (I like to farm dungeons for cash)…but there is some serious hypocrisy going on here. You guys say the dungeon community LOVEs dungeons in one breath then say it will kill the community in another just because they nerf the monetary reward? If you really like doing an activity the monetary reward being slightly nerfed isn’t going to affect it.

Yall just whining you aint got easy money no mo.

I think my most favorite part is that the whole meta/zerk culture of running dungeons as fast as possible in the least amount of time possible has created a sort of gold/hr generation that ultimately lead to the reward being moved to other areas that can’t be completed as fast.

A close second are those who bring up the Silverwastes but don’t seem to understand that’s gold generated from the player economy (IE: Existing pool of money) and not gold generated out of thin air contributing towards inflation.

What a depressing world view some of you have…

I mean DPS meters aren’t exactly a new concept. That “depressing world view” is actually “depressing experiences” people usually have had in games with these tools being the primary source of their grief.

Arguing about the objectiveness of the tool isn’t the conversation that’s being had. The conversation that is being had is the intrinsic social dangers that are introduced when you begin measuring performance. Think of it like a hand gun. I’m sure most people say it’s entirely for self defense and self defense is the primary purpose of owning a gun. However you also know that someone’s gonna use that gun and murder some people with it. It’s naive to say they won’t when statistically it’s just going to happen. It’s no different with damage meters. I’m sure some people will certainly use them to improve their game play and justify builds through hard numbers. However it’s incredibly naive to think, given numerous years of experience in other games to the contrary, that no one isn’t going to also use it as a tool to kick and/or bully players.

Are the benefits worth the inherent danger that comes with them? That’s up to Anet to decide. Considering people already have started getting through raids within the first weekend I guess I don’t personally see the point.

So, you’re saying it’s really a problem with the class, and not with the racial skills themselves?

Personally, I want the racial skills. I really do. But I’d accept them being attached to a “null” legend, basically not channeling a legend at all. That way you can access them, but you can’t channel a legend while you do so, and you have to set that as one of your two legends before you go into battle.

Correct. The class is balanced the way it is because we are unable to swap utilities out for alternatives. If you choose Shiro, you are stuck with the abilities Shiro has.

Your idea is probably one of the more reasonable solutions but I’d question the return of investment on the amount of work it’d take to implement. For example Racials only work in 2/3rds of the game (WvW and PvE) and are excluded from PvP entirely for every class. In addition to adding a new legend that changes race to race, effectively 5 new “null” legends (one for each race) there’s also the hurdle of it allowing for and remembering an Elite choice (there’s 3 elites per race). At this point, less than 2 weeks from HOT release, I wouldn’t get my hopes up.

At the end of the day it comes down to what you can live with. You can either live without Racials, or there’s other classes that offer that if it’s that much of a deal breaker.

Engineers get toolbelt skills from their utilities, that is different from every other class and they still made it work. Not putting racials on Revenant just seems like a lazy cop-out in my opinion.

There’s a number of issues with the Engineer argument. For example you are cherry picking an apple (main weapon skills) and comparing it to an orange (utilities). While they are both fruit (skills) they aren’t the same thing (weapon vs utility).

More over you also don’t consider the fact that there’s no racial weapons which thus has no impact on an Engineer’s accessibility. Furthermore you also fail to consider the fact that you can’t swap weapon skills nor choose which ones you get, you get them as a set. In addition to this you also fail to account for the fact that in order to get so many utilities that add additional utility bar in addition to utilities that change their weapon bar they’re forced to forgo weapon swap entirely.

While you may think it’s a lazy option, the more likely scenario is in the current controlled environment they are capable of balancing against a known environment. There’s 5 legends that can be mixed and matched all with known utilities that can’t be changed. Now lets say in addition to this you add in 15 potential racial utilities and 15 potential ultimate abilities as well. This creates pure chaos in terms of balancing, but more importantly it drives racial balancing. What if adding in the extra Condi clear of Humans (Prayer to Kormir) is out of scope and creates too much Condi clear on the Revenant? Are you willing to see something like Soothing Stone lose it’s condition clear to compensate? If you’re a Norn player is that fair to balance the class around a Human only Utility?

Given the tightly controlled nature of our Utilities it makes not having racial utilities the logical choice in the matter.

Why would you need to balance any differently on Revenant than any other class.

I mean in every way the Revenant’s Utilities are different from every other class in the game. They come in sets that you can’t change. You get access to multiple sets of utilities with Legend Swap. Why do they need to be balanced differently? Because they are different from every other class.

Honestly if you gave Revenant access to Racials there’d be huge imbalances and honestly create a very real “Best race” for Rev. Right off bat I can think of Human’s access to Prayer of Kormir a huge issue cause of the condi management it provides. It also bypasses the limitations and balance done for Legend Utilities. While some, such as Shiro or Glint, might not see replacements legends like Jalis might suddenly become incredibly powerful with the ability to swap out the “bad” utilities for potentially amazing racial ones. This might not seem incredibly OP at first but you gotta consider we get 2 utility bars and that’s where things start to get out of hand.
Personally I’m okay with this. I’d rather race really only play a factor in terms of what you care for animation and looks wise than having to consider picking “best race” for my class.

Is Revenant supposed to 1v4 other classes?

in Revenant

Posted by: Kodiak.3281

Kodiak.3281

Now consider all his experience with the game and Revenant and the fact that he himself agreed that it’s a little too strong right now. Shouldn’t he have credibility behind his thoughts on the matter? It’s something that everyone who’s disagreed with Wand, seems to cast aside.

I don’t cast his opinion aside. As he claims he has over 120 hours on Rev, which I have no reason to doubt, he has come to the conclusion that it is too strong at this time.

What I, and others, are doing is providing objective criticism by examining the factors that went into that opinion:

1. Quality of opponents. With a titular question leading off “Should a Revenant be able to 1v4” a lot of it gets put back on the 4 people that are playing. Is this supposed to be proposing that if Wander were playing 4 of himself that he’d still win on his Revenant? Are you telling me if you could put any 4 equally competant players against an equally competant Revenant the Revenant would win?

2. Scenarios he’s putting himselves in. Some classes and builds perform outstanding 1v1 and other builds don’t. I wouldn’t take a WvW Staff Support Ele in 1v1 and expect to come out shining and objectively I wouldn’t call the other build OP. In this case he’s saying it’s performing better than other similar strong 1v1 builds. Now this might seem like a cause for alarm, but really it’s up to the developers to decide if they want to balance the game around a 1v1 encounter. It could be because UA is overperforming 1v1 which is immediately irrelevant in any 2v2 or 1vX scenario.

3. How new is something to the game? At release there were a lot of preconceptions about what was OP and was UP. Over time, as people adapted, these preconceptions gave way to knowledge and things that seemed stupid OP weren’t as bad as people thought. Anet has always moved slow on the balancing cycle because of this factor because sometimes people just need time to catch on. There could be counters that people don’t bring simply because they aren’t meta for the rest of the game. For example I have yet to see a video of a Revenant just crushing a strong Condi build on a strong opponent. Is something overpowered if people refuse to bring the counter?

What it comes down to is regardless of experience, if you’re going to make claims, they better be able to stand up to scrutiny of all the involved factors.

Kodiak.3281

The most glaring thing to me for example is where’s the control? Yea he has 2 stacks of stability after dodge, however they never get removed ever. I mean this is just inconceivable to me in WvW that no one is doing CC moves? It’s not to say that Revenant doesn’t have counters to these CC moves but rather he’s never pressured to use them.

As others pointed out there’s very little to any condition pressure in any of these fights as well. The only fight that had real condi pressure cuts away right at the start after he’s used Facet of Light to counteract the damage but was still left with many condis on.

His next fight reads right into a Necromancer who never uses shroud? Never uses wells? Sits the entire time just auto attacking in Axe? Wat? The Greatsword mesmer who never spawns Crippling Phantasms? Strips boons with GS3? Hell generate a clone or two! No just sits back and auto attacks and runs away when being chased.

I mean can anyone claiming to say Revenant is OP saying that these people were really playing at the top of their game with a straight face? Are you telling me if you were playing these characters against a Revenant these people represent how you’d play against it?

I hate to be “that guy” and call out the quality of the 4 people involved in a 1v4 but honestly it’s pretty apparent that a lot of these opponents are without a doubt not playing at any level of efficiency let alone peak efficiency.

Revenant story

in Revenant

Posted by: Kodiak.3281

Kodiak.3281

Essentially there’s zero changes to story if you’re a Revenant that I could tell. For example Rox still asks Rytlock what’s that “new” magic is even if you were also a Revenant during the first story during BWE. Just how it is.

Your first choice is pretend some kinda reason of why it happened like Linfang. Asuras going with technological time travel. Norn going with connection to mists. All that kinda stuff. Most elaborate thing I’ve read on the forums to date was someone used an Identity Repair kit to change their existing character (name and look) then when they do their Revenant they get their old name and old look and thus they “changed” classes like Rytlock.

Personally I’m going with the same thing as most people and just not going to think about it. Considering we have no race effectively (no racials), it would have been nice if there was a Revenant only start instead of the racial starts but effort and time and truthfully in 2-3 years from now again it’s doubtful it’ll even be an issue.

With Ascended gear being account bound I just make Exotic version of gear, and switch the Ascended around from character to character as I feel it. Playing a single race all the time can get really old if you play a lot and the extra character gives you room to alleviate that.

As with all things Revenant simply stacking conditions before will:

1. Not be blocked.
2. Negate healing (Poison and damage).

I mean look, personally, I’m all for nerfing these anti-power tools with our evades and blocks if it means you’re going to give us decent condition management in return. But if you’re not willing to boost our ability to deal with conditions, which we have literally like 2-4 skills/traits that remove conditions (one of which is in a full on support legend), then this is what we get to compensate.

Protection spam by wasting your heal skill and a utility bar and no cleanse and sustain?
Quickness as to against any decent player you have no chance of stacking quickness IN COMBAT? (You can’t prestack it since pet swap quickness only trigger in combat)
The fact that one chill or boon removal will instantly kill this build?

See it’s over generalizations like this that is why you aren’t ever taken seriously by developers. Not everyone can self-stack to 25 might. Many classes can get some stacks, but very few can actually reach let alone sustain 25 stacks of might.

The rest of your argument makes no sense. You go on for 3 paragraphs how bad that build is, but you seem to be arguing for it to be returned? Why? You can’t ask for a build back on one hand while going on how bad it is on the other. Why would you be asking for a bad build to be returned? Could be it wasn’t nearly as bad as you’re presenting and, in fact, with near permanent Quickness it’s spike/sustain damage was incredibly overpowered?

Ranged Condi Weapon: What would it be?

in Revenant

Posted by: Kodiak.3281

Kodiak.3281

My prediction would be it’d likely be a good fit for a future Specialization. Condition wise it’d likely focus on the “traditional” conditions such as Bleed, Burning and Poison. Traditionally weapons that inflict Conditions are usually Short bow, Rifle and Pistol. Not sure they’d really go all “crazy time” and do something super unique (IE: ranged hammer, melee staff, etc) again. A lot of weapon selection likely would come down to the Legend chosen. I’d wager the Legend that’s chosen could have a lot to do with the Expansion that it’s coupled with based on the fact Glint is here. For example I could very easily see a scenario where we get a Condition Scepter or Dagger at mid range (900) with a Palawa Joko theme with ranged Wells (we lack ranged GTAOE) should the next expansion be Elona.

Roy makes Revenant stupidly OP while trashing ranger.

He believes Ranger can’t have too many boons by ruining We Heal as One, while Revenant gets all boons easily. (As well as the most OP heal in the game, Glint’s damage conversion with no cast time) They also have crazy strong one-hand sword and shield, better than any class using a one-hand sword or shield.

Also all Rev’s skills seem like superior version of other classes.

Dude you Rangers are just insane with this WHAO stuff. Rangers aren’t ever meant to get that kind of boon play. That’s how the class is. You never had it before this. You get it for a patch, it has unintended level of boon addition, and when it gets fixed you guys act like you always had it. If you want to play a high boon class, play one. However right now all high boon classes (Guardian, Elementalist) both have low HP to compensate for it. You willing to give up 300-400 vitality for boons? No? Then let it go.

As for SOTM, again the ability lacks consistency. Saying “a decent player will land it perfectly every time” can be countered just as easily with “a decent player will avoid it landing perfectly every time.”

Let's talk about Hammer 2 Competitively

in Revenant

Kodiak.3281

I don’t think you can honestly ignore the energy cost of any ability, even one that is 5. The reason is because we don’t operate in a vacuum and actually use a variety of abilities. The best example of this is, of course, upkeep abilities. If you are at -4 upkeep and at 1 energy a second then the effective cool down on CORuin is 5 seconds because if you don’t you will eventually run out of energy at that rate. It also adds up in other upkeep scenarios as well. For example if you’re using Impossible Odds and are at -5 then doing a CORuin just took off a second of Impossible Odds time.

Furthermore I think it’s faulty to compare any other existing class or mechanics to other classes. Class balance is a tapestry of numerous factors all coming together from passive defenses (health pool) to weapon skills to utilities and traits. Cherry picking out a single aspect, of any character, and directly comparing to a cherry picked aspect of another character is faulty and misleading. You could no more reasonably compare Mighty Blow to Lava Font or Heart Seeker than to CORuin.

Furthermore you ignore huge and obvious differences in abilities. While you do acknowledge the 1200 range you ignore the animation time that gives ample time to move out of it at it’s most heaviest damage. This is in addition to the numerous and well documented bugs currently with the skill such as it’s animation not lining up with damage as well as unreliability on uneven terrain. This also fails to point out that a blast finisher on kitten cool down makes for one of the most reliable blast finishers in the game to date.

From my previous raid experience in other games things usually come down to roles. For example Scrapper Engie filling a “Bruiser Utility” style role where he’s blasting Water Fields and the like. Is that something Elementalist can do? Is that something Tempest can do? That’s generally how it works. You need X roles filled and it’s up to players to fill those slots with various classes.

Looking at Revenant objectively.

in Revenant

Kodiak.3281

Almost all (except Mace) weapons have one big move that accounts for majority of their damage. Hammer has CORuin. Staff has Surge of the Mists. Sword has Unrelenting Assault. The rest of the attacks on these weapons, generally speaking, are fairly lackluster by comparison. Complaining about the few that are good without intent to boost those that aren’t just isn’t going to work considering the damage output of the Revenant was already proven to be much lower than other classes without said boosts.

Furthermore I think we’re taking some pretty situational abilities, putting them in their ideal situations, and complaining pretty loudly. No one, objectively, is making the claim that you can press 3 and win all day in any scenario. Often times it takes pre-stacking 25 vulnerability, pre-stacking might and fury and have a single opponent by themselves. Any realistic dueling vid you want of normal PvP scenarios you don’t see anywhere near the same level of performance because pre-stacking might/fury means running at -4 energy regen for a while then releasing Might to stack 20 fury using Burst of Strength followed by doing UA without the opponent doing any kind of defensive move at all. However you never see any complaints on these abilities in a 2v2, 3v3 or any scenario where there’s multiple targets (ranger pets, necro minions, multiple opponents, etc).

I like the place of the Revenant in the grand scheme of things because it’s a physical counter. Right now there is a lot of Condition counter (IE: Elementalist for example) but very few classes that have physical counter. Heavy condition play absolutely destroys the Revenant especially in these builds where they have no counter play to it what so ever. This reminds me a lot of the Elementalist in PvP where the counter, boon strip, is quite known but often times not taken or used but people still cry bloody murder about the class.

Yea another guy on Reddit made a great video showing some of these bugs as well.

Hoping they get fixed and the damage is made to match the damage area. I think the animation going up/down inclines is probably pretty technical and likely won’t get address pre-launch tho

People are saying you can ignore UA because soon as you see it going off on you, you press V and it suddenly does little to no damage. Really not much more to it than that.

SotM is not that hard to land. As for UA, I really don’t mind it being the same. But SotM definitely needs some tweaking. It can kill you in a second. You guys say just stun-break it however breaking out of stun wouldn’t be that easy since it all happens in 1 second. Even after you stun break, you can get caught in it again. Same goes for teleporting, it happens so fast that you take around 8k damage before teleporting or stun breaking.
I’m not asking for destruction of the revenants, I too love the revenant and wanted to main it in the past. I simply ask for that specific skill to be looked at.

You pretty much require perfect positioning on an unmoving target to really land all the hits on it for 8k damage. Most cases it’s very common with everyone moving, adjusting and otherwise to land a fraction of that damage.

BWE3 FEEDBACK

PvE General – Hard to really tell because the Maguuma PvE was undertuned or something compared to past weekends. Pretty much was zero challenge and just blitzed through everything without effort. Few encounters were rough, but mostly boss events where they all had one shot abilities.

WvW General – We’re entirely reliant on Stability from other classes at this time which means Guardians. Without Guardians we’re pretty much regulated to back line game play which is kinda depressing. The Guardian bottleneck is just so real.

STAFF
Changes to Punishing Sweep felt good. Couldn’t get it to trigger in WvW that often but could get it to trigger Debilitating a lot in PvE. Absolutely adored changes to Renewing Wave. Huge thumbs up there. Auto attack damage feels little low for a 2 handed weapon, but I’m okay with it because how good the other abilities are on the weapon.

SHIELD
At first I was leery about the new Crystal Hibernation but I am okay with it now. It excels at small group scenarios. I was able to tank a few bosses in PvE with using Crys Hib.

HAMMER
Hammer continues to face numerous bugs. Please fix these. I’ve reported them repeatedly on game and in the forums and have made videos documenting them broken.

SWORD
UA still feels okay with cool down at 12.

LEGENDS
Jalis continues to remain entirely situational in it’s usefulness. There are many other threads on this. Inspiring Reinforcements should be instant cast AOE 3-5 stacks of Stability that last for 3-5 seconds base.

Glint is the big winner with all it’s abilities in a good place. The energy upkeep costs can be felt if you overtax yourself. I ran out of energy many times because I wasn’t properly paying attention which is a good thing.

Shiro continues to be fine.

Mallyx is a shadow of it’s former glory. The elite is now functionally useless compared to simply spamming Unyielding Anguish for the same energy cost and an AOE effect. The condition copy should be brought back. The torment boost you were contemplating would be a good idea as Torment is very weak condition damage comparatively in PvE and many PvE encounters are starting to move towards wanting Condition damage alternative. The poison ICD is extremely high for Poison which is over all weaker now that it’s stackable.

TRAITS
Charged Mists is still broken/useless. It either has a 4s ICD or only triggers when you first go below 50 energy and never triggers from weapon skills. Traits like Equilibrium and Shrouded Mists will rare get used cause the alternatives are vastly superior to them. Invigorating Flow seems to have some sort of ICD or not counting weapon skills.

Ferocious Strikes swap was good.

Soothing Bastion / Crystal Hibernation sometimes don’t work if used too quickly one after the other. Using Envoy of Exuberance never seemed to refresh boon duration after numerous tests with Soothing Bastion.

FINAL WEEKEND SUMMARY
Being weak to Conditions and being weak to Controlling Effects is incredibly harsh on the Revenant. There are very, very few stun break abilities the primary of which is tied to a Trait almost making it mandatory. Even then Stun break abilities are ineffective in environments with multiple CC’s that also require mobility. Inspiring Reinforcements static nature and slow activation only compound this problem. Rite of the Great Dwarf’s cast time can be caught and interrupted despite being a stun break making it very ineffective under heavy pressure. The primary source of stability then becomes Unwavering Avoidance in which we’re forced to waste a Dodge to build stability before we’ve ever even engaged an opponent or would take advantage of said dodge especially on a class with no access to Vigor.

Really isn’t that hard to counter. Between environment move next to wall instant cancelling the ability and simply dodgin once it goes off isn’t that hard. There’s very few other moves you need to really dodge on the Revenant so not sure what the problem would be.

How to make Jalis more tanky

in Revenant

Posted by: Kodiak.3281

Kodiak.3281

Conditions are meant to be one of the main weaknesses of the Revenant and I can’t see them walking back on that by giving us access to a Light field.

I could see them making IR more useful by giving it instant AOE stability instead of waiting forever for the field to create.

Trait Charged Mists bugged!

in Revenant

Kodiak.3281

It’s either bugged or something. I had a topic on this during BWE1. Basically it only triggers when you first drop below 50%. It’s pretty much a terrible GM trait because it’s 2 stacks of might that one time. It also appears to potentially have a 4s ICD that’s unmentioned.

Or make it instant cast so like every other stun break in the game it casts and the effect goes off.
