System freeze on quitting GW2

Can I ask if you are doing anything in particular just before this crash? How do you close your client (game menu option, X, logout to char select then close, etc)?

I ask because there used to be a bug that if you filed an in-game bug report, then QUICKLY (this was key) closed the report confirmation notice, then hit eskittenil the menu came up, quickly chose logout to character select screen, then either immediately logged on another character or closed the game, it would cause a system crash that required a hard power down to regain control of your system. The sound still payed without fault until it reached the end of the cycle, the video card would cease heavy use and your fans would spin down as if just sitting on the desktop, but you couldn’t tab, force quit, or get the shut down menu to function.

I was assured this was fixed several months ago since it was pc and mac client mutual, but I only tested it once or twice intentionally due to learned cautiousness.

Any other details you can think of may help, but I am unable to reproduce this crash (MacBook pro late 2011).

Regards to tp issues, try this instead of rebooting next time:

1. Open your trading post (leave this open until finished)
2. Open your options panel
3. Change the language to French
4. Wait for the trading post to reload in French
5. Change the language back to English (anglais)
6. Test trading post

This may initiate an easily fixable gamma bug on your system upon the language switch, but after reverting to your default language, just keep your options panel open and move the gamma slider a bit. Beats closing and crashing every time!

Kyllaa.1385

The problem is, not everyone experiences this. There are also many reasons for different crashes and such and without knowing more about his system, no one can truly say it was solely the client causing this issue.

Anyway, of course, that is understandable that he would not want to purchase something he could not effectively trial. Who would?

It is unfortunate your friend had that experience, but if he is still interested in figuring out what may have gone wrong, please have him log onto the forums (or you could open a thread for him in his stead) and post his complete system specs including OS plus specific code/error he received and we could take a peek and maybe find out what may have gone wrong.

Try changing the language in the top right corner to French or German (not Spanish), see if it completes. Once it does, you can change it back.

Anet recommends leaving it sit for 10-20 and wait for the alternate downloaded to start up. But some claim this can take a very long time.

MBPr 15" is a nice choice and it runs the game very well! My hubs has one and I’m jealousy of his non stuttering vistas and shiny graphics lol. Medium/high settings he gets ~45 fps pve, ~20fps LA. I get ~30 fps world, ~14 fps LA on medium/high settings. These settings take me down to ~5fps is Zerg style battles though… I cannot attest to MBPr fps for that though, he doesn’t Zerg lolololol.

But I run fine on a 15" MBP late 2011. So hopefully this gives you a nice comparison.

Macbook Pro/Performance

Kyllaa.1385

You’ll get slightly better performance from the windows client since it isn’t run through a cider wrapper there, but windows has seen its fair share of problems. And if you are using a 32bit version, you’re way more likely to experience out of memory errors.

I can attest to upgrading to 8gb that the game plays 100 x’s better than on 4gb. The mac client has minor issues (like the gamma bug mentioned on these forums), but they are insignificant compared to other issues experienced by pc users and some iMac customers.

Make sure your MBP is using the discrete card by disabling graphics switching under energy saver settings.

And on occasion, you may need to purge your memory since gw2 has been using much more memory in the last few builds, it really help keep it running smoothly.

So if you can upgrade your ram, DO IT!!!

You can complete the playhouse if you go in with someone who has access to it. The playhouse can be completed with 1-5 players (scaling up for each player). It’s easy with 2.

I know this doesn’t help your other issue, but at least you can do the playhouse. Maybe a ticket could help with that.

Out of memory error

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Kyllaa.1385

Kyllaa.1385

I don’t know if this will work for you, but you can look into the 3gb switch. I don’t know if this works on 64bit windows. This supposedly allows the program to use more memory.

If you’re just absolutely not willing to test other avenues, it could be worth looking into.

FYI, in your crash logs, your system load is up to 77%, most of this is caused by your commit total/peak/limit. Could be worth looking into that considering you’re barely using any ram and virtual memory. This could be an issue of failing memory or motherboard or some problem in your OS or bios setting not allocating it well. Or video memory problem.

As a note, hardware can fail at anytime, even top of the line stuff, never rule out a hardware issue prematurely. Test the game with one stick of ram (if using 2 – 4gb) see if same crash occurs, then swap and test again.

Stin, I was thinking that it could be permissions also, but I didn’t suggest admin first because in the other case I mentioned, it did not help this person (whose local.dat was causing the archive error).

My next suggestion would be testing out disabling antivirus/firewall/security software.

Lastly, for this round, you can try running msconfig, disable all startup programs, restart comp, test gw2 a few times. If no errors, it’s time to narrow down the conflicting program. You can re-enable by repeating and restarting.

Keep us updated.

Make sure your comp is using your ATI Radeon HD 7670m since this is the better vid card (unless running on battery, you may opt for the lesser card).

The hd 4000 is your integrated card and the 7670m is your discrete card.

Btw, how old is this laptop? It’s possible it just overheated and shut down; a good internal fan cleaning may be in order.

Installing game in a new computer

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Kyllaa.1385

Kyllaa.1385

1. You want to backup the gw2.dat file (~17.5gb)… Keep it secret, keep it safe.

2. Download a fresh installer from account.guildwars2.com (same login for here)

3. Run this installer as admin.

4. Once the installer/client begins downloading, close it.

5. Paste your old/large backup gw2.dat file into the folder where gw2.exe is now located (your install folder), overwriting the new, tiny gw2.dat file.

6. Run your new gw2.exe file and let the client download any other updates and misc files.

7. Enjoy gw2 on your new comp!

You pretty much had the idea, so I hope this helps clarify.

Remember to run the gw2.exe as administrator always and create exceptions/permissions for gw2 in your antivirus/firewall/security software and UAC.

I think the South America lag issue has been around for a bit as well (several months). I don’t think I’ve seen a specific “fix” for it yet, but there could be some random ISP routing issue trying to get to the Anet servers.

I know you said you don’t want to submit reports or anything, but have you run game advisor yet? Or had anyone look at your file from that?

If not, it’s worth a shot to maybe see if there is an issue somewhere.

http://us.ncsoft.com/gameadvisor

As an FYI, some ISPs also block specific ports and/or directions of those ports and this coud be causing a problem. Or one of the routing nodes (not really ISP fault, but I don’t think much can fix it when it’s out of the ISPs hands). My ISP blocks traffic one way on one of the gw2 required ports, but luckily, I’m not experiencing major issues.

Lastly, have you tried playing while tunnelling with a VPN? This can sometimes bypass random ISP and routing issues. (Not sure if this is exactly what WTFast does or not)

Kyllaa.1385

Yes! You may still need to download some misc files and such, but saving a copy of this .dat file is always a good idea… Even if it wasn’t 100% current.

'Unable to open archive file' question

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Kyllaa.1385

Kyllaa.1385

That might be causing the problem unfortunately. Try Re-installing to a folder outside of program files.

This may not actually fix it, but I’ve heard some have issues with files associated with the install there.

However, it could be a bum .dat file, but you can test that by saving the copy of your gw2.dat file. Install the new client in the new/other directory, once it starts to download, close the client, paste this old (full sized ~17.5gb) .dat file into the new directory and overwrite the new gw2.dat file (tiny sized). Open the new client again and let it finish the download of updates and misc files, test game again.

Please let me know if this helps or not.

If not, hopefully I’ll have another idea or some awesome person will come in and save the day.

It might help to turn shaders, shadows, environment, and view distance down a smidge, possibly try lowering your character limit and quality. You can lower your resolution a notch too. Reflections can be a culprit also.

I know it’s not ideal, but it might help until a fix can be found.

Ashley posted another suggestion on the tech forum, I’ll try to find it and add it to the end of this post for you.

Here it is:

One solution presented by players being affected by this is to change the “Maximum pre-rendered frames” in the Nvidia control panel. To do this:

1. Right-click on your desktop and select “Nvidia Control Panel.”

2. Select "Manage 3D Settings.

3. Scroll down until you find “Maximum pre-rendered frames” and change it from “Use the 3D application settings” to “1.”

Once completed, click “Apply” to save your changes and try Guild Wars 2 again.

You need to complete a “daily achievement” category to get the last ones. That’s how the new meta achieves are working now.

Look at your daily pve achievement panel and find the one relating to queen’s jubilee (balloons, torches, events in the pavilion, emissaries, etc) and complete that one to win the achievement.

It could be due o the new culling. You may want o decrease some of your settings. Lowering player limit/quality, shaders, shadows, & reflections are areas for improvement. PVP browser error,

Kyllaa.1385

I’ll post this for you now, but if working on these things doesn’t help, you may need to open a support ticket with a game advisor report to report this specific issue, get some light shed on it.

[first major body of text is a copy/paste, 2nd will be further suggestions, try both sets depending on success]

Error Code 42 x x x x
(example – 42:0:9001:3858:101)

“The game client is unable to gain access to the log-in server at this time. This is most commonly caused by firewall or router settings, security applications, or connecting through a campus network. For additional support, please visit http://support.guildwars2.com.”

If you are running security software such as Norton, AVAST, AVG, or McAfee, please try temporarily disabling the software. If this does not work, you might also try adjusting the ‘security’ setting within the firewall settings. Lowering this setting to ‘medium’ or ‘low’ will often clear up connection issues.

In the event that adjusting the security settings does not resolve the issue, please try temporarily uninstalling the security software completely. If this does resolve the issue, please contact the software manufacturer for instructions on how to configure it correctly if you wish to reinstall it.

In addition, Guild Wars 2 requires TCP ports 80, 443, 6112 and port 6600 be fully unrestricted and accessible, both inbound and outbound. For further information about opening ports or port forwarding, you can visit the following website: http://www.portforward.com Please note, this site is not affiliated with or supported by NCSOFT or ArenaNet.

If you are connecting to Guild Wars 2 while on a campus, military, or business network, please check with your network’s administrator to verify that these ports are fully opened and unrestricted. If you are on a home Local Area Network (LAN), you will want to make sure that your network’s hardware is properly configured.

[2nd]

Be certain you’re running the client as administrator.

Sometimes ISPs block ports to minimise possible attacks on their clients (mine does), you need to contact them to find out.

Try running msconfig, disable all startup programs, restart comp, test pvp browser. If no issues, you have a conflicting software somewhere. You can re-enable by repeating and restarting.

Please post a game advisor report using more posting & formatting options below.

http://us.ncsoft.com/gameadvisor

I may be forgetting other possible troubleshooting steps, but maybe if anyone else is reading, they’ll post in too. Also, the game advisor report will help us see issues and help tech support in the case if you need a ticket.

If none of this helps you at all, please file a ticket and post whatever your fix is here to help others.

Ambient Creature names

Perhaps it is a bug, I honestly had not thought about it before.

I thought maybe they were acting similar to player names when they are at a distance affected by “culling” or view distance and show up regardless of setting at said distance.

Other players were experiencing issues that NPC names would disappear when the player names tick box was unticked, hence my question about player names above.

Hopefully if it is a bug, Josh will make note of this and it could get fixed sooner or later.
