I also agree.
Even if the rep buttons are only half the worth of the tokens (since they are essentially used tokens, and as such are worth ‘less’), just let me do something with them other than just trash them.
As I have said, and others have said…..different teams.
Yes, living world has 4 teams. We do not know how many people are on them. We do not know how many each has individually.
WvW has its own team. We do not know how many people they have. Anet has said that this is one of the teams that has recently expanded / hired more people. We do not know what all they are working on, in terms of WvW content. People wanted some ‘progression’ in WvW, so they came out with all the mastery lines, to make play a little more interesting. They have come out with traps to make things more interesting. They split the jumping puzzle into its own map, so its population would not count toward the total population of EB.
I am sure there is more to come. Just have some patience.
I think you are misunderstanding my point.
I understand where you are coming from and often play with the same playstyle. I also do not think you are doing anything wrong.
That said, by choosing to wear gear which enhances your gameplay while also reducing your effectiveness in a group, you are being selfish. That is because your consideration for your own entertainment is higher than your consideration for others. Again, I do not see anything wrong with this.
There is a post on the previous page which outlines why zerker gear is more optimal. Essentially, due to condition cap + removal of healer + removal of tank + low condition damage + defiant and unshakable, all non-damage builds have become relatively weak in comparison to zerker. Zerker on the other hand not only increases damage, but scales exceptionally well by having 3 traits which scale exponentially.
Another important factor to consider is the intentional design of Arena Net to have damage prevention be the primary way to survive. That means, you should not get hit (often) and that makes toughness and vitality less significant. I have worn many different builds from zerker to pvt to condition etc. In my experience, there is very little significant difference in survivability among them. On fights where I die on zerker, I died on PVT. It just so happens that a one-shot attack kills you no matter what.
Also, in my experience, the condition damage is extremely weak in comparison to zerker. The difference is not some subtle change, but on totally different playing fields.
I think we’re misunderstanding each others points. Thanks for the clarification on yours though. I’m not sure how to work mine in another way to reflect my thoughts on the matter, so I’ll just leave it. =)
You can enter a dungeon group that did not require a cookie cutter build, but still provide less for your party than you otherwise could, because your concerns are primarily on yourself.
-snip-
See, this is where you go wrong.
You assume that because I am not optimized I am not ‘pulling my weight’ in my dungeon group. The only time most people give a rats kitten about what you are wearing or not wearing is if you are speed clearing. At which point, they want something specific. I don’t go with those groups. I don’t fit their style, they don’t fit mine. You could argue that I am being selfish for opting not to play with them; for choosing not to spec for that availability in my play.
I do play with other people like myself, who simply don’t care about what you are wearing, only about the enjoyment of the game and possibly getting through. While its true I am rarely in a group that fails, even then its not ‘point the finger and blame x because OMG he’s wearing MF gear!’ its more ‘rofl, wtf was that, lets do it again! maybe we shoudl stop and look before we rush ahead though.’
They are different mentalities completely.
You see in some situations my ability to keep my teams’ sorry kittens alive at the boss with my support heals kills my DPS, yet allows us to finish the idiot off without wiping. Means no waypointing out, running back and starting all over. Yet, as per so many prior posts, using armor with a healing stat boost is useless/selfish/a waste. Not in this situation its not, and yet…I am selfish for assisting my team in such a fashion.
On the other hand, you could potentially argue that if I had more punch, the boss would have died faster and my team may not have needed the heals to stay up. Or you could argue ‘they are just bad’ or that I am ‘just bad’ which is completely unfounded since you dont know them or even me. If I stand there and fight, trying to keep us from wiping, I’m selfish. If I wipe and make us run back and start over, I am selfish.
There is no win here…. everything one does is selfish by the opinions of others.
However, I would say that I am not. I play my way in such a fashion that it does not impact anyone that it would bother, which is a key point to selfishness. I don’t ‘lack concern for others.’ However, I’m not going to let their opinions dictate how I play either.
I play the way I want to play. If other people don’t like it, too kitten bad for them. They don’t have to play with me. If they invite me to a group and then suddenly decide I need to ‘conform’ to some specific gear or build, I leave. They want to give me crap about it, I toss them on ignore.
PS this fits the definition of selfish almost exactly.
Adjective
(of a person, action, or motive) Lacking consideration for others; concerned chiefly with one’s own personal profit or pleasure.
Yes and no….
Its only ‘selfish’ if it affects others, which generally speaking it does not. (Ie, they dont have to play with me).
See the first section there ‘lacking concern for others’, my game play affects no one, concerns no one, besides myself unless I am running a dungeon. At which point, I am not running with a group that wants something specific, if they want something that I am not then I leave. Therefore I do not impact them, since they can get someone with the cookie cutter they want. So, you can’t say that I lack concern for others. If I dont fit, I don’t go. Im not impacting their play in anyway.
I play may why, I let them play theirs. I am not trying in any way to force my desire to play my way on them. However, they seem to be the ones trying to force their way of playing on me, by stating that using anything except what they find acceptable as being ‘selfish.’ It is they, that are in faxt, being selfish, in trying to dictate how someone ‘must’ play.
Well I guess since other gear stats are not ‘acceptable’ to what seems to be the majority of the player base, armor stats should simply be removed.
While we’re at it, since so many people seem to hate so many of the armor skins, we’ll vote on which single one is the best for each armor type and we will have only that single skin for everyone in that armor type. So, we’ll all have the same skin and the same stats.
Next, we’ll remove all the weapons from each profession except for the optimal set, this way we no longer have any weapon discrimination. Don’t forget to remove all the stats from weapons too, nothing except zerkers is allowed on anything anymore.
/ end sarcasm
Variety is the spice of life. Opting to run something other than zerkers is not selfish. It does not make you bad. Running something that isnt completely optimal is not the end of the world.
The achievement doesn’t go up with adding more gold to the wallet. It’s stuck at the level just before patch.
Then that’s indeed a bug, they said that it’s supposed to still be achievable, maybe when you get a little more gold it’ll recalculate? Otherwise I’m sure they’ll fix it.
Correction – it does update, there’s some weird delay on it though (usually you need to logout, but sometimes it doesn’t work, and sometimes it updates even if you didn’t relog).
Not surprised at this. It probably has some sort of delayed commit on the database. Perhaps limiting the transactions ran simply due to the large amount of input. HoM updates were similarly delayed between adding it to the physical HoM and being able to view the update on the website calculator, you needed to log out and back in for things to tally.
I play the way I want to play. If other people don’t like it, too kitten bad for them. They don’t have to play with me. If they invite me to a group and then suddenly decide I need to ‘conform’ to some specific gear or build, I leave. They want to give me crap about it, I toss them on ignore.
I like some of them, but not all.
Others, I’ve noted like pretty much all of them.
Yet others, absolutely hate them.
To each their own. =)
Maybe I’ll try for a bow….
I disagree. It would be more accurate (imo) to state that Anet does not promote alt chars for grinding purposes. They still promote using alts, for the enjoyment of doing so though. You play an alt because you like doing scenario ‘a’ on this one, and scenario ‘b’ on that one. This would (to me) entail a variety of fine tuning for each character.
One of the bigger complaints in GW1 was the necessity to regrind a title in order to have it on an alt. They have removed that here. Now you can get an achievement on any character and be able to use/show it on any other. I like not having to worry about whether or not I need to play a specific character in order to progress a specific achievement or title.
However at the same time, they have removed some of the imbalance of players with multiple alts getting so drastically ahead of those that dont. Some people just don’t play multiple characters, which, lets face it, put them at a massive disadvantage when it came to farmable things like events. It levels the playing field a little bit, and allows Anet to more easily control the growth of the game, including economy management.
(edited by LanfearShadowflame.3189)
Thats not exactly accurate though, The idea of casting a vote is not just so you can get a badge. That was just part of it. The main idea is to help your candidate win. For better or worst your choice made a difference.
As for the argument of the vote having value only if their candidate won. Thats not true either. Which candidate won is the outcome of the exercise. That was determined by which candidate had the most votes. Each vote counted for that ergo all votes had value. Even if you supported Evon and Evon lost when you cast your votes you had a say in that you wanted Evon to win and each vote cast made that outcome more likely.
But yes, a smaller price for badges might be a fair middle road I agree with you there.
There will always be people that feel their vote didn’t count for one reason or another.. their selection didn’t win, Anet had it planned it was all a farce, etc etc.
I think the biggest issue with offering to purchase the tokens back is that people feel that those that didn’t participate are being paid off. Which simply isn’t right.
This as to be the most kitten twisted sense of entitlement you guys are expressing. Ashamed of calling you fellow gamers. Wth is wrong with u ppl.
I think the issue here is that those that didnt use their tokens are now being rewarded for it. While those that did, and may have a bunch of badges in their inventory get the short end of the stick. So to speak. In essence, not participating would have paid off more so than doing so (possible. I did make some decent gold from Aspect Arena, and it was a blast). Still, the point is, it kind of feels like those that horded the tokens but didnt vote are being paid off for not partaking.
- snip-
I still would have voted. I just only have gotten badges as I needed/wanted them though. Rather than feeling like I need to go convert them when I got a bunch. I converted a ton of tokens knowing that I’d absolutely never have enough game time to use them all. It sort of feels like a slap in the face now. ‘Well you voted, those badges are worthless. But we’ll pay you 1s for each token you didn’t use’ Huh?
(edited by LanfearShadowflame.3189)
Well kitten, I knew I shouldn’t have converted that last bunch… We should be able to sell the badges as well. Period.
Part of me agrees with you and it would benefit me too but I can understand why they didnt do it like that.
One the influx of gold would be drastic. That could have a negative effect on the economy. Another argument against it is by putting your vote in you already got your value back. While if you just got the support ticket you didnt get anything for earning that ticket.
Yes and no…..
Im sure there were people that tosses the tokens in for no other reason than they had nothing better to do with them (like me). Like kitten I’m going to be able to use 100 Keil badges in 2 weeks. I don’t play that much.
It would only seem fair to allow us to sell the excess badges similarly to excess tokens. If you’re paying for one, why the heck not the other. Even if they knocked them down to 50c each, that’s fine.
One could only argue their vote only had value if their candidate won. The people that lost are going to be sore anyway. In addition to that, people that have bunches of both badges just sort of feel completely screwed, since they really didn’t care who won either way. They would have been better off just not doing it. How is that right?
Well kitten, I knew I shouldn’t have converted that last bunch… We should be able to sell the badges as well. Period.
So I’ll just go ahead and get this out of the way – if you play a game for 8+ hours day, lets face it…. even your friends would say you have no life. XD
Who said I have friends?
chuckle
Would further support the statement of having no life….
Tol, they’ve already told us that we’re getting new skills and traits…..before the end of the year even. That we’ll be unlocking them and that they will be a means of horizontal progression for our chars. =)
Now, when it comes to skills….we don’t know if they’ll all be utility skills, or if we’ll get new weapon skills too. That hasn’t been clarified, if I recall. Still, I look forward to seeing what we get.
I wouldn’t take this post too seriously, folks. This line pretty much betrays the true intention of the post-
With 45 min of game per day, I have the same stuff, the same skin, the same advantage than a player who play 8 hours per day.
Translated: “QQ casuals get the same rewards as hardcores. I’ll pretend to be the most kitten casual you have ever seen and make the most ridiculously innaccurate claim I get (mostly to rile up ignorant players looking for a reason to be angry) to get the point across that this should be changed!”.
We see casuals do it all the time to hardcores, I suppose it’s only fair that the other way around happens as well.
See, I usually see more complaints from the no-lifers than I do from the people who have lives. The no lifers whine and moan that people that have crap to do shouldn’t be on equal footing with them. However, GW has always been skill > time.
Even as badly balanced as many griped GW1 was, it was still Skill > Time spent. We have called for the same in GW2, and for the most part the devs have stuck to this. We knew the game was going to be Skill > Time before it launched. So there’s no excuse for those people to not have expected that ‘casuals’ would be on equal terms with the ‘hardcores’
Disclaimer: While none of the terms used are intended to be taken personally, I know some of you probably will. So I’ll just go ahead and get this out of the way – if you play a game for 8+ hours day, lets face it…. even your friends would say you have no life. XD
I am hoping that the loot changes to Champs will help get some people into other areas, as higher level champs should be more rewarding. However how much more rewarding vs the ease and time factor of the lower ones is what is going to make or break this. Hopefully anet took that into account.
Lol….I can see them turning that into a trap in the future. Aaaanybody else having EotN flashbacks? Follow the white rabbit!
snicker
C’mon…. you know you told your guildies to do it before they knew about that little surprise hahaha.
rocks back and fourth in the corner you werent there man…
Actually, I stood way up the hill, and watched. hehehehe.
Couldn’t have said it any better. A Game can’t be a replacement for your job, where you get your rewards for doing good. Go get a job and you have your rewards. I want a game to have fun and chill out, not a second job.
Same here…. I work 40+ hours a week not including the commute either way, have a family, a social life, and a home to take care of (you know….laundry, dishes, cleaning. them lovely domestic chores). I ‘work’ enough during the week, I don’t want to feel like I’m doing ‘one more job’ or ‘one more chore’ when I’m on the game.
Sure, the rewards are nice when I’m killing things, but that’s not why I’m doing it in the first place. I’m killing the things to get to a goal, I’m doing it because it’s a great way to release some pent up frustration (oh look, that one looks like my boss!), I’m not doing it because it has .0000000001% chance of dropping ‘x’.
If I wanted to do that crap, I’d march my sorry butt back to WoW and brainlessly run raids, where some other power crazed lunatic dictates that you must complete ‘x’ by ‘y’ deadline. Only, they don’t pay me! shudder Even I’m not that masochistic.
I think the problem is that you shouldn’t play the game rewards, you should play it for the fun of playing it.
I frequently find that if I focus on the reward I don’t enjoy myself very much. If I decide to grind out COF, or I play the TP, or I just try do my daily / monthly then I’m quickly bored and frustrated.
On the other hand, if I log in and decide what I want to do for fun and do that, I have a much better play experience. For example, sometimes I want to try a new jumping puzzle, so I pick one I haven’t done and go do it. Although there is a chest at the end, nobody is going to spend however long (15 minutes or so the first time) for a support token, 2 blues, and a green.
Other times I feel like running around in WvW, so I do that. Sometimes I want to run a dungeon. About once every couple of months I get it into my head to do a fractal (which always reminds me why I don’t do fractals).
Sometimes I feel like working toward map completion. (this is usually when I just want to waste a little time).
At almost no point am I doing any of it for the rewards it provides.
Sometimes I don’t really want to do anything at all. In which case I don’t log in, or I log in, realize nothing appeals to me, and log out.
you are the reason that makes me wanne quit the game. this is by far the most casual post i’ve ever readed in my entire life.
Why? Because games are supposed to be about the rewards? When’s the last time you played a board game where you played for the loot? You play monopoly for the fake paper money? No, you play because you like it. It feels good to beat your friends because you had better luck or better skill. The cash and tiles are a means to an end. They mean nothing in the grand scheme because if you didn’t enjoy playing in the first place, you simply wouldn’t do it.
How about sports; those are still games. You go out and play a game of basketball with some buddies. What loot do you get from that? Nothing. Zero, zilch, nada. No shinies. Just the enjoyment of hanging out and competing with your buds.
Games are about enjoyment, not greed. Sadly MMOs have taught us to be greedy, to expect the shinies, rather than to play the game for enjoyment.
Hmmm…. let’s see
I bought 2 copies of the game….
I bought 2 of each of the infinite harvesting tools…
I’ve bought (I think) 2 bank tabs with cash purchased gems….
Can’t recall if I bought the 2 char spots with gold or cash…
Planning on buying at least 3 armor skins…
shrug
I’ve spent a bit across 2 accounts, doesn’t bother me. I have $50 in my monthly budget for games. Gives me plenty of freedom when I want something….
Lol….I can see them turning that into a trap in the future. Aaaanybody else having EotN flashbacks? Follow the white rabbit!

C’mon…. you know you told your guildies to do it before they knew about that little surprise hahaha.
Yeah…. I sort of… stopped at ‘I play one match, then afk the other 2 I need for my laurel’ That’s not playing, that’s being a kitten to people that do want to play.
While I’m sorry that you aren’t happy with the game, that’s the risk you take with things in life. We knew well before launch that this wouldn’t be a stat progression game, that WvW isnt intended to be ‘balanced’ in any sense of the word, that playing 8 hours wasn’t going to give you any type of advantage over someone that can only play say 2, etc.
Logging in to afk isn’t playing. Its simply wasting your, and other people’s, time. I would suggest finding a game you that you do enjoy, and play that. Considering how you are ‘playing’ this one, it is obviously not it.
NPC merchants are irrelevant. They are saved by their on bad interface. You would need to have a seizure at the right moment when interacting with one for it to become an issue.
One of the issue mentioned (not necessarily by you) pertained to over purchasing due to lag. Obviously just selling it back doesnt work since you cant sell it for what you bought it for. This boils down to vigilance. Lag happens, dont be a click-a-holic and pay attention.
As for the grocery store. I don’t know where you live but here pretty much all them here has a “undo” option. Especially for unopened/unused/… items.
Was simply pointing out how the game issue isnt comparable to real life, ie you cant get lag in real life.
A spreadsheet is useless for my concerns. I have no problem controlling my spending.
Again, was addressing (originally) the broad issues mentioned, one of which was managing ‘allowances’ on characters. This would work for that type of issue. THey could record who spent it, on what, on what day, and track how much their chars were spending.
No I’ve never had issues with lag either. On the other hand I have had clicks go through to the wrong window.
Yeah, I’ve had that happen too. Still not screaming at ANets door….
It’s great that you don’t really care about the virtual bits you acquire in the game. Some people do. Which brings us to karma and laurels. Uh there is just no reason to care about those. Nothing worth buying with karma except maybe alcohol for thirst slayer and a few exotic trinkets or obsidian shards. Once you got your character fully geared karma is effectively useless. IF karma was actually useful then yes I would have been complaining about that too. Laurel suffers similarly. Once you have a full set of ascended you could still use it go earn some coin but now we’re back “keeping my coin safe”.
Its not that I don’t care, its that I’m not going to stress out over it. Just because you dont care about karma and laurels doesnt mean others dont. That is a biased assumption on your part. However, it is still the exact same thing, which no one had an issue with, beyond karma not being account bound. Now they are making all these currencies account bound, one pool for all characters to build and draw from, and people are still whining.
They just cant win, and I feel terribly sorry for ANet having to put up with it every time they turn around.
Wow, I have probably one of the kitteniest connections this side of dial up, and I have never had the issues managing my gold that people are “concerned” about. Over buying at merchants, fat fingering or multi-clicking the TP, game errors? (I must be uber kittening lucky apparently), etc. I really think some of you are overreacting just a tad.
Tell me … do you keep all your money at home as well in real life? Stacks of cash? Gold ingot? Maybe piles of diamonds?
Not real life, not even close.
However, I do have a debit card, so when I don’t have cash on me I don’t have to go to the bank to have money. Pretty much the same concept. I have to be responsible for my purchases, and keep track of what I am spending.
You can’t really compare the wallet to this though because its not the same thing. Apples and oranges, because you don’t have ‘lag’ when you go to the grocery store. You don’t have disconnect errors when you’re paying for dinner. Well, actually they do sometimes have errors in that crap and you get double charged, and then you have to fight with the kitten merchant to fix it.
There are some ‘Are you sure you want to do this’ idiot proof popups in game, to help mitigate and protect people from themselves. If you’re really that worried about it, like I suggested before…make yourself a spreadsheet and track your spending.
If something goofs because of lag, well what can I say, kitten happens. I’ve accidentally destroyed things due to lag or ignorance on more than one occasion. I’ve over purchased materials from a trader (not due to lag, just cause I thought I needed them when I didn’t, mind you) You don’t see me screaming at ANets door for a refund. ‘Lag’ isn’t always necessarily their fault, its not something that can be controlled. However, some responsibility and awareness on the your part is completely on you and can most likely help you avert the majority of the concerns being thrown out there.
Edit: Lol after thought…. I carry my characters full load of karma on me…. I carry all of my laurels on anyone I am on. What protects me from accidentally exhausting those due to lag at a merchant? Getting two of a unique item by accident? Nothing…. You people are already dealing with ‘currency management’ with this things. You already do the gold management when you dole it out. The only difference now is not needing to go back to the bank to get more. Or having to put it in the bank to give to another character. Now its just all ‘right there.’

Oh kitten . No, the dragons didn’t go on holiday. No, the personal story didn’t get forgotten. You just don’t see the bigger picture….
“Bobby Stein: From January to April, the focus was on Braham and Rox and their fight against a new Molten Alliance. Then we jumped into Moto’s Super Adventure Box. After that, we followed Ellen Kiel to Southsun Cove, Lion’s Arch, and Zephyr Sanctum. We’ve fought Aetherblades. But how does this all tie together? Does it have anything to do with the core story of the dragon threat?
Players will soon understand where these characters are headed, and how these seemingly disjointed events fit together and tie into the larger narrative."
Actually you know, I think there are a couple of decent threads on here that link things together and fill in some of the blanks for people that might be missing things.
While I admit that some of the story bits are a little disjointed if you aren’t really paying attention, they have said they are working on that. Even in the interview I quoted above, its stated that they are working on some way to more easily track/experience the story bits so that players don’t feel so lost.
There is more than just mini games being given to us, we just aren’t seeing it because we’ve no grasp of the bigger picture.

I find it fun, enjoyable.
I am still exploring.
I am still building characters.
I still have racial stories to view.
I have new tidbits every couple of weeks to do.
I’m making new friends….sort of. Being social tends to get me burned, but we’ll see how it works out…
I’m finally working on the mile long list of goals I set.
However, what it all really boils down to is ‘because I want to.’
Yes its unbalanced. Sadly, balance is a very hard thing to achieve. But the balance, or lack of, changes in each area of the game. Elementalists do poorly in PvE, but in WvW do rather well. Same with thieves, they seem to have trouble in PvE, but most WvW people list thieves as the top in WvW.
Wait my ele does poorly in pve? News to me….
I can’t speak for tpvp, I don’t play it.
I use my ele in pve and wvw without issue. I tend to play a lot of support as well, although I can dish the pain if I need to. Personally, I play staff, but dagger ele looks fun as well, which falls more into the midrange with some melee range.
Still, they offer you the support option since water heals, and swapping attunements can share various boons (if you trait for it). You might try that one. Its a challenge to get the hang of when to swap attunes, but once you get it, I find it fun.
Edit: Of course, you could make one of each of the three and just try them all….
Lol am I the only girl that enjoys playing male characters and can’t stand playing as a female? Anyways. I have all classes at 80 and I like guard, mesmer, warrior, ele and engie. Necro, thief and ranger are sitting there collecting dust. Which is strange because in other games I always go for the ranged or stealth class, but in this one meleeing is so much more fun.
I find male characters feel ‘clunky’ to me. I feel slow, and not at all agile. Of course, I like the view for either….
Actually I live in Michigan. Close enough haha.
When it comes to picking a class, I say try them all. Make one, play it to like level 5 or 10, make the next one play it for 5 or 10 levels, and so on, until you find one you connect with. (fricking filter, imma smack whoever manages it)
What type of play style do you like? Up close and personal? Mid range with some close quarters on occasion? Or as far back as you can with prayers for no melee range?
OK Ladies, in order to get valuable statistics about this, imma need your BMI, measures and current locations. Just for the science in it, dont worry, I am not a creep!
snicker
BMI – oh please
Measures – now where did I put that measuring tape….
Location – looks out the window Someplace cold and rainy…where they try to make me do this thing called work
~.^
My wife’s main is a guardian and we have another couple of female guardians in our guild. But I think a lot of women tend to go for the “sexy” look. Of course a lot of men go for the female sexy look too.
Haha yeah… my characters are what I am not….. Short, petite, and lovely in their skimptastic cloths XD
snicker
I never play male characters, and I rarely (if ever) use one complete set of armor.
Still, I know I’ve seen a male winged that was decent. If I run across anybody with either that I find appealing, I’ll screenie and share.
A lot of this has to do with having some sort of “theme” for your character. My necro as an example is hard as nails and a bit unfeeling. Power hungry too. My sylvari mesmer is almost exactly opposite. By playing characters differently, I come to understand them and like them more…but you have to put more effort in this game into doing it than say Guild Wars 1. It’s still better for me than any other MMO I’ve played though…just not as good as Guild Wars 1 for character attachment.
I wonder if this might be intentional though. If you put more time into ‘defining’ your character, you may feel more attached to it, because you worked that much harder to make it what it is. Unique from each other.
You’re right though, I do have to put a lot more work into making each of my characters ‘be their own individual’. Since all classes can role swap, and now no longer even have profession defining armor, they felt lost in a sea of monotony. Seeing my necro is the same armor as my mesmer (roughly the same level) made me feel really blase about playing them. There was a whole lot of ‘really whats the difference between minions and clones other than looks, they both play the same.’ Very disheartening. Still, finding my style for each as they level, and setting goals (like armor) has helped to bring them to life for me, creating the gap of difference between their classes, and after putting so much work into it, I’m definitely disinclined to just blow them away.
Imo, the armor does look pretty kitten close to the concept art. The dye you selected to demo with for the Winged is horrendous, but that’s beside the point.
Twilight Arbor – with the exception of the horns, is spot on for the art. Sans the mask, obviously they opted to not have those. Now, how that actually plays with the various dyes and the dye zones is a different animal. Those things are bound to be tweaked and adjusted at actual implementation. The coloring as it is in the art is never actually possible in the game. On a side note, I kind of like the tweak to the horns, makes them not look like the traditional devils horns on your head. No to mention, as this is supposed to be plant like, a plant is never that perfectly symmetrical (ok there are a few exceptions, but you get my point).
Winged – again art and actual are pretty kitten close, and again the actual dye zones and how the dyes look are going to vary drastically. Its just the difference between digital and paper, there are limits.
Also, turning your textures up might help….
Like Vayne, I’m not ‘as’ attached to these characters as I was to their GW1 predecessors; however I am becoming more attached to some of them.
Now that I’m finding my footing in the game, and I’ve gone through and picked out armors, and dyes, and set goals, my characters feel more individualized and ‘alive’ now. It was just so darn hard to take my mesmer seriously when she started in the same skimpy armor that my ele did, they seemed so….homogonized? Like they weren’t different entities at all. I really do miss class specific armor at times, it made new characters of a different class feel different.
Anyway, now that my various characters feel like they have their own personalities (as they should), I’m getting more attached to them. I’ve already decided that the ele, necro, and mes will not be deleted…ever. Maybe a makeover kit for some tweaking, but I wont reroll them. The theif I’m still sort of meh on, and my guardian….she’s getting rerolled just as soon as I decide what to do with her. The ranger…needs a makeover. I just need to find the class/race combos that I resonate with I guess.
My main is an ele, simply because its the class that I presently resonate the best with. She is also the namesake and class of my primary from GW1.
I do play all of the armor types (3 light, 2 medium, and 1 heavy presently), and will eventually have at least one of each class (likely to have the other heavy in the next week or so). When they are all built, I will likely end up spending roughly equal amounts of time between them. I did this a lot in GW1 as well, once my professions were leveled. Different classes work better for different things, for different people. Each class is also its own animal, if you will. Sure, you can make the play styles similar if you want, but they can also be drastically different, which is what I prefer. It keeps things exciting and fun.
I didn’t see Bazaar as a festival. It was a big event sure, a gathering of traders, but I wouldnt’ call it a festival…not like Dragon Bash was. The upcoming, yeah it’s a festival. Its the 1 yr game anniv, of course they are going to have a festival. Doesn’t mean it won’t be interesting.
I am also wondering how they will deal with the Queensdale zerg. I think that the rewards should be scaled to the natural level of the champ. A champ in Orr should have a greater reward than one in Queensdale.
Colin did state in the ‘second half of the year’ live stream update something along the lines of addressing this. For the life of me its not coming to me exactly what was said, but basically yes they thought the same thing. High level champs should be more rewarding than lower level ones. However, we’ll see how much of a diff there is, and if it makes people more willing to do the higher level ones, or if they still opt to just zerg the low level ones.
Ok phew, I was worried I was going to have to take a day off from work…
“We want more mini-games. We were promised 30 at laucnh!”
devs produce more mini games
“Gah, no more mini-games. Give us real content!”
They can’t win, they can’t.
So bascially, all we are are well trained dogs….
Champions should always give at least a t6 mat for killing them.
Even the ones in Queensdale? Caledon? Metrica? I honestly don’t think they should. Higher level zones (70+), sure. The lower level ones, not so much. Maybe a stack of 5-10 fine materials of the appropriate level/tier maybe, but not always t6. That would just make that many more people come farm the lower level champs because they are easier to do with fewer people (which really shouldn’t be the case).
I was using that as an example only if it was in a once per day chest. So that would be the least amount you would get for killing one per day. By no means would I want to see people getting a t6 for killing the same mobs over and over in a low area.
So if that was the case, yeah I would. It would bring more people to lower level areas and still give people that can’t solo champs a way to get a reward still while helping lower level players.
I just really like the idea of a once per day chest because then you wouldn’t have people sticking around in one area and moving around Tyria and giving a more populated look in the open world.
Maybe, maybe not. Zerg train en route, we’ll be hitting, x then y then z. Hop aboard! Yes, it gets people moving around the world with the once per day, but doesn’t really solve the underlying issue.
Still, from the looks of things its not a once per day bag (could be wrong). Personally, I think they just should have adjusted the loot tables. Better % chance for a yellow or a mat in the higher dmg tiers or something. Dunno, I don’t have all the answers…
You could often get a better return from farming a node for 5 seconds, then from spending x minutes taking down a champion.
I must be on the lucky end of RNG for champs then, as my drops aren’t that terrible. Merching the blue still generally nets more than TPing 3 of whatever node I mined/chopped. Especially when I’m not selling my mats… But, its different for every person I suppose…
Whichever way you look at it, the “rewards” for killing champions is out of whack with the time involved in the process and these updates are indeed needed.
And no, this is not “catering to spoiled children”, this is addressing the reward imbalances in rewards in the game and the lack of options in getting various crafting materials.
There will always be a small segment that wants “moar”, but you cannot not update loot/rewards when said update is needed, simply because you fear some kind of slippery slope.
With the dungeon adjustments and additional options to get rare/fine craft mats, this update looks promising from a loot/reward overhaul point of view. In fact it looks to be one of the best updates we’ve had if you factor in the spvp updates as well.
While I don’t disagree with rewards needing some adjustment in general, it depends on how much ‘more rewarding’ these things become. Anet has been known in the past to make some knee-jerk adjustments, throwing things further out of whack.
There are a lot of unknowns in regards to the new champion loot, and how farmable they are at the various levels. Depending on these, it could very well be catering to the children. However, if its actually a balanced update to the rewards, with little exploit potential, then woo-frickin-hoo! As I’ve said, my concern is with this turning into more of the ‘one guaranteed gold’ per champ per day, sort of thing. Which would be outrageous (and wrong), but where it could go if they listen to the people that just keep hollering for more.
I am not saying “don’t balance the rewards,” at all. Although, it probably came off that way.
Simply put, I don’t try to.
I could have the most fantabulous armor and weapon in the game, but if I’m a crappy person, no one is going to notice me, not in the sense you’re looking for anyway. No matter what you wear, or what you wield, if you are not ‘memorable’ as a person, then you are simply more scenery. Noticed for but an instant, and forgotten just as quickly.
The people I notice are those that are quiet, humble. The ones that play simply because they enjoy it. Offering their insight when asked, helping when they see the need, leading when no other will step up to do it. They could be in the crappiest armor in the game, but they are still memorable. Actions speak so much louder than words or looks, and this is what truly makes a person shine.
To seek to ‘distinguish’ yourself through mere armor or weapons alone is simply a display of vanity. A peakitten displaying his tail feathers in the hopes that a female we take notice.
I think it’s an excellent change and a huge step in the right direction. All too often I’ve been exploring the game world and stumbled upon a champion only to find no one else nearby interested in slaying it because the loot is generally not worth the time it takes to kill them. Some can be killed solo, of course, but that’s typically a lengthy process.
I agree thakittens a step in the right direction; however at the same time I have the concern that they could go overboard at the same time. There is a very fine line here that they need to balance on, between being too skimpy and being too rewarding.
Is Anet stupid? No, but finding the right balance is difficult. I have faith they’ll manage, but until they do and its been proven (and even then people will still kitten), there is still a justifiable cause for concern.
I have the same issues you do with Champs. Often when I find one, nobody can be bothered to come kill it with me. “I don’t want to spend 5 minutes for a lousy blue” Gosh really? You get nothing else out of doing it? No interaction with a new person? The chance to make a new friend? Maybe some fun conversation? A good laugh?
Far too much “I don’t care about you, I just want the shiny” imo. So much for being social, ha! And you people grump about me being anti-social, so many have me beat by miles!

It’s an… interesting situation. On one side, you have people who go crazy at the mere hint of a gear treadmill, and on the other you have people who demand it because they need bigger shinies to motivate them to keep playing. And sometimes the same person is on both sides.
You have those with strong opinions on both sides, and both sides have merit. Then you have people on the fence that could go either way, and sometimes go both ways (start one, end up the other). It does make it interesting…. We’re all entitled to our thoughts and desires though.
