No presents more often now?

Lankybrit.4598

Hi,

Did they implement DR on presents or something? I go and get them every time I see them on the map, and it seems like there are no presents for me now about half the time. This used to be a very rare occurrence.

Did they change something and has anyone else noticed this?

Has Server Population Increased?

When a company doesn’t release any stats of their customer population, I’m sure its a great sign.

When a company doesn’t release any stats of their customer population, it’s normal practice and not surprising at all.

Cheers.

Not quite true. In America, if they are a publically traded company, then they are required by law or face so many wonderful fines to release any and all information to their stakeholders; i.e., the player base. If they are not publically traded and are still private they are not required as they are not regulated by the government which is a pity as I’m sure there are a lot of “practices” that should be looked into.

Only if it relates to revenue, which in the case of GW2, it does not.

Yes, WoW has to release Subscription data because that impacts revenue.

All GW2 has to do is release number of copies sold, and info about in-game item purchases. Nothing about number of players logged in at all.

Cheers.

You do how ever buy those items with real world money. A 50 inch plasma TV has no real world value once the 60 inch comes out

Well, not true actually. It still has a lot of value for people with only room for a 50 inch TV.

A better analogy would have been a change in technology. For example. 32 inch tube TV have no value once 32 LCD TVs came along.

1. Roles

Don’t agree. It’s pretty clear whether your role is melee, ranged, and with no Trinity, it’s clear we’re looking out for ourselves even when grouped. Not an issue at all.

2. Dynamic Events

They are not the replacement for quests. Hearts are the replacement for quests with Dynamic Events being a nice supplement. Yes, they are not random, but IMHO that is good.

3. Area flow

Sort of agree on some of the points here. Especially the one about your Personal Story jumping you all over the place.

4. Crafting

Don’t agree at all. If you’re trying to do discoveries on your own, you’re doing it wrong. Find out what you need to do from a web-site.

5. Story

Too soon to tell for me. My highest is about 56 and I recently finished the Battle for Claw Island, which I thought was awesome. I think the story telling is fine at the moment.

I fail to see the logic.

You can either 1) Kill the mobs, or 2) Run away.

If you are a Kill the mobs type player, you can certainly kill the mobs left over by someone else. If you’re a run away type player, you can just run through them to open the gift and spawn more and still run in and get the present and run away.

You’re all doing it wrong. I was having a horrible time with it not being able to kill the spawns and dying a lot of the time, so I changed my approach.

Click the present, wait until the bounceback, and interrupts and whatever have finished. Then run in and ignore the mobs and click on the present. It’s very quick and youn don’t take much damage. Then run away from the mobs casting your heal and keep running until you lose aggro.

I don’t care that it’s the cowards way. I now get my presents and don’t die.

Change Server Status

The analogy would be more like:

Brother and sister each have 500 items they could plug into sockets, but only need to plug 5 in at a time, and so they get a socket that allows 20 and can handle them fine.

You say what if all 10,000 were filled. I’m saying that there really isn’t a 10,000 limit. The limit is based off a percentage of that, plus some headroom. Let’s say 30% plus another 10% headroom. So, that’s 4,000. It’s only when the number of accounts gets to 30,000 that it would be marked as full.

And good luck getting into a dungeon at level 35-40. Looks like most AC story runs want level 80s.

Don’t forget to do your Daily achievement. That gives you some XP, a Mystic Coin, and Jug of Karma netting 4,500 Karma.

You need to:

Kill 15 different types of foes
Kill 60 overall foes
Gather 20 items
Complete 5 Events

You can check progress in your Hero (H) panel. Last button on the left (achievements, I think).

And, as far to finding events:

1. Talk to all NPCs you can. Some will ask for help which will start an event.
2. Ask in map chat if there are any going on. That works for me most times.

Have a good time leveling!

Please explain the Server Population system

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Lankybrit.4598

Lankybrit.4598

It’s baffling why server status is based on the number of accounts on the server in a B2P game. It makes perfect sense in a subscription game, because players would be stupid to consider paying for a subscription when they are not playing the game at least some of the time. But in a B2P game, there could be tons and tons of accounts that have absolutely no activity at all. And these accounts are preventing people getting on the server who would actively play.

It makes no sense at all.

Cheers.

It actually does make sense, in the same sort of approach that gives principled procedures to know how big a 911 switchboard should be, or how to configure telecommunications switches. The load is determined by concurrent and potential users. There actually is a mathematics & science behind this stuff.

For what it’s worth, there’s one fewer open servers today than there was yesterday when I looked. The sky is falling.

That analogy falls down because it’s the subscription model. People pay for telecommunications access and they know how many of them there are. Also, the maths and science that you’re talking about is basically looking at averages and adding headroom. That’s the maths, not anything else.

A better analogy would be capacity planning by Amazon.com. You need an account to buy something, but they don’t base server capacity on number of accounts, they base it on average load for the time of year, plus some headroom. Because they know that not everyone who has an account will all log on at once, and that they need to allow for new accounts also.

All I’m suggesting is for ArenaNet to do the same thing. Take a look at average usage and add some headroom and use that for server status.

Let’s say there are 10,000, 7,500, 5,000 accounts on a server are Full, High, Medium. Let’s say a server is full with 10,000 accounts, but only 3,000 is the average usage. Then they could add some headroom and say it’s a Medium server equivalent to 5,000.

Cheers.

Change Server Status

in Suggestions

Posted by: Lankybrit.4598

Lankybrit.4598

Hi,

I suggest that you base Server Status (to decide if an account can be added to a server) on something other than the number of accounts currently on that server.

You could say – but then the server would be overloaded if everyone logged in at once.

Well, how likely is that to happen. From all the things I’ve seen posted on the forums, servers are low current population, even when they are ‘Full’ of accounts. That’s because this is a B2P game, and there’s no reason to ever cancel your account if you stop playing.

So, let’s say one server has 10,000 accounts. Maybe only 100 of those are actually playing regularly.

Obviously, you should monitor activity, and restrict servers if active population does get out of control, but basing server status on current accounts for a B2P game is just illogical.

Cheers.
