sounds like a good idea

only problem is that you will get those people who will keep asking you to duel, and will not leave you alone until you do

Sorry, but this has been addressed several times throughout the thread with the idea of having an option to disable duel requests.

you could get people constanly whispering you then

I don’t think people are going to go through the trouble of whispering someone in an attempt to manipulate them into a duel XD

More likely they’ll probably find someone else who is actually willing to duel, no?

Excellent video. I was thinking about this a while ago and came to the conclusion that excluding traditional quests entirely was a weakness. One of the greatest things about traditional quests is the “quest-chain” that can carry cross zone. It’s a side-storyline that can stay with you for a long time, and you can really get involved with, rather than a simple one step heart quest. Hopefully the living story turns out to be a worth substitute.

Jayb.1329 and Wolf.5816, I couldn’t have said it better myself, I think you covered pretty much all the bases ^^

Also, like you mentioned Jayb.1329, a point to support it being in the PvE world is the sheer amount of map variability. Anet built this giant world and no one is going back to the lower level zones anyways, so why can’t we enjoy the scenery and terrain by dueling there?^^

Anti-RP and basic hate

RPers represent a relatively small population of the game. Then there are players like me who enjoy law and story but don’t actively RP. I consider myself an immersion player but not an RPer. I’m also on Tarnished Coast, which I chose because it’s the RP server.

People often ridicule or even hate that which they don’t understand. Learn to use the /ignore command and move on.

Because you’re never going to change the mind of those people who don’t get it…and there are enough people who do to build a wide community.

^ This exactly. I’ve busted out my RP skills on occasion, but I mainly chose TC as my server because other people RP.

Oh, and although RPers may represent a relatively small population they are certainly one of the most individually represented populations ^^ It seems like more than half the people on the forums are from TC, maybe that’s just because RPers are more invested in the game.

Either way, you can’t let the ignorance of others bother you, they don’t know what they’re missing.

it’s actually super easy to program. it doesn’t take a day, maybe a few hours max. Anet is just lazy. Also there is no reason to up-scale people in a duel. It’s fun to win as lvl 20 vs lvl 21. You can’t even spec someones armor, how lazy can you be as a company, lol.

Perhaps you should write your own MMO if it’s that easy.

However , back on topic.
I found duelling in other games an annoyance in populated areas. If they do implement it in GW2 there ought to be designated areas (ie Arenas and quieter corners of the maps). Any players duelling in towns and settlements ought to run the risk of some NPC guards spawning to cart them off to the dungeons. There they would either pay a fine (level based) or get a 20minute lockdown in the cells.

The guards reacting would be freaking awesome, but again, would require even more programming… Also, 20 minute downtime for players is somewhat unreasonable XD

Is it that hard to use the search function and read your ToS?

No, but the number of results a forum search brings up can easily prove it’s probably the most talked about feature that isn’t in the game.

Making multiple threads of the same topic is not a sign of how badly it is needed, especially when there is 50 threads of this topic and only 20 people have commented in support of it across all 50 threads. If maybe people would read the rules they would find out that creating one thread and having multiple people on it gives a more defined clear notion of what the players want.

Do you understand how foolish your statement is? You’re creating imaginary limitations for the system, could they simple not create a dueling system that prohibited individuals from using it in cities? Or even just prohibit it from Lions Arch, because people hardly go to the other cities as it is.

They did this in WoW and yet everyone stood out side the cities and duels and just bothered other people. Again if people did a lil research they would have found that Arena Net is Implementing a dueling system into the Heart of The Mist where you and your friends can rent out a private room and duel till your hearts content. The moderator of the room will be able to control who comes and stays, and more than likely other aspects of the game.

Alright, let’s look at your points one at a time here:

Read the ToS? You mean forum rules, and why suggestions belong in the suggestion forum? This thread wasn’t a suggestion but rather a technical question, I simply gave my opinion in response to the replys that were off topic. Again, no idea how my OP found it’s way to the suggestion forums.

And as previously stated, this thread isn’t like the 50 other threads suggesting the implementation of dueling, it’s a question.

The system doesn’t need to be like WoW’s, almost every other MMO has dueling too you know. The reason I don’t think it should be exclusive to the HotM is so that players can use the infinite map-variability found in the open world and revisit old locations.

Dueling, more reasons to stand around in big cities instead of out in the world interacting.
Arenas, more reasons to stand around in cities waiting for your match to pop instead of out in the world interacting.

Do you understand how foolish your statement is? You’re creating imaginary limitations for the system, could they simple not create a dueling system that prohibited individuals from using it in cities? Or even just prohibit it from Lions Arch, because people hardly go to the other cities as it is.

Oh, and dueling is interacting! Would you rather have players interacting with each other in an MMO, or interacting with NPCs?

ie: you and 4 of your buddies are not an acceptable sample size for commenting on what the majority wants.

No, but the number of results a forum search brings up can easily prove it’s probably the most talked about feature that isn’t in the game.

Are you guys actually serious? You don’t want dueling because it’s “annoying”? Wow… WOW…… What, you really think you’ll get spammed with duel invites every 2 minutes of gameplay? How is it that every other MMO has this feature then, and there aren’t people clamoring to have it removed because it is “annoying”?

Because “every other MMO” does not have unrestricted dueling. One notable one being GW1.

GW1 wasn’t an MMO, so you better pick a different game =D
I think LOTRO didn’t have Dueling, can’t remember though. Does SWTOR have dueling?

Both LOTRO (or at least google search says it does) and SWTOR (it does, I played it at launch) have dueling, it’s honestly hard to find an MMORPG that doesn’t. >.<

Should They Add Dueling Into The Game?

Quick over here————It’s that thread again!

Well strictly from a lore point of view it shouldn’t happen as we are all suppose to be fighting the menace that are the elder dragons. Now if you guys want to beat each other to pulp, I’m all for a PvP server or arenas in each city as a “training area”, so long as I don’t have to see all the races pretending that for some reason it is now all out civil war after the storyline I’m fine with it.

Strictly from a lore point of view our characters can’t be individual characters? Are you saying that every character in Tyria has set aside differences and would not fight each other to the brink of death after insults are thrown between each other? One of the beginning human storylines even has a duel in the form of a “trial by combat” scenario.

Label it sparring or whatever you want, dueling should have launched with the game.

The problem with dueling i not the dueling itself, but the whining that will start afterwards when class A can’t beat classes BCDEFGH and demands buffs or nerfs. Almost no MMO is based around class balance and it wouldn’t be pretty when they tried. It’s based on group balance.

So dueling is always a big no no for me when people ask for it to be implented in a game.

Almost every other MMO on the market has some form of dueling, not only that but I can’t see how you can support your point when:

People already whine about class balance (have you seen the SPvP forums?) and ALWAYS will whine about class balance.

People are already using inconvenient means to duel each other, such as meeting in an SPvP or WvW game.

Adding an spvp map using the arena from the black citadel would probably sate people. Or just letting people duel in specific arenas, would make everyone happy since they are out of the way, and it’d populate the non-LA cities a bit.

Also space for spectators.

About duel spam, you can auto-decline duels in eve, don’t see why not in gw2 :P

Actually, that’s a great idea, I never even though of that. Allowing dueling almost everywhere except LA would increase player traffic to all the other areas.

Oh, just go to the mists for dueling. Keep it out of PvE and WvW, w’here some people do not want to bother with people constantly ‘challenging’ them over trivial matters.

Besides, we don’t need the mists being more of a ghost town.

You realize SPvP is being hindered by the influx of dueling matches right?

Well that and the fact that the lack of actual SPvP rewards is leading it to hindering itself, but that’s a different matter entirely XD

Regardless, the argument for open world dueling is for the near unlimited map variability. I don’t mean to be ignorant or cruel, but I’m going to use a word I never use: it really seems like the ultimate in “carebear” that people are, for some reason, afraid of even being challenged to a duel that they can easily decline.

I hope dueling is introduced to the open world for multiple reasons. One being for the sake of near-infinite map variability.

It’s also a great way to pass the time if you’re waiting for someone to catch up, or LFGing, etc. I want to be able to simply /duel someone and get it over with in 5 minutes, instead of having to travel to the heart of the mists and finally getting to the action 15 minutes later.

Right now the easiest way taking the least amount of work to implement some sort of PvP in PvE is to take the costume brawl mechanic and turn it into an open world PvP flag mechanic. It wouldn’t be dueling, but it would satisfy people somewhat until the framework for dueling could be implemented.

And in a sense by doing just that, two players could meet up in a secluded area of the map and “duel”. It wouldn’t be perfect, but it’d be a hell of a great quick fix.

For goodness sake… A system that gives PvPers the option to duel in the PvE world will not effect you, the greatest impact it could ever have on you would be clicking decline and walking away; even then Anet could create an option for auto-decline in which case it won’t impact you AT ALL.

I imagine if they added it, your level would be based on the zone you were in and would only be downscaled/upscaled if you were already. You would probably be able to duel on a zone border and hop between downscales (ie, level 50 vs level 45), which would make the duel unfair, but that’s ok, because you chose to duel there.

For the win condition, it would probably be the first person to get downed, then on duel completion, the person would rally. They could make the condition just before defeated, but on downed would probably be simpler for them to do.

Do you have a source for this? Because I heard it was on their to do list. Not their immediate list, but eventually.

It’s on their list of things they want to add: http://i.imgur.com/inYDU.jpg (from the BWE)

Holy KITTEENSSS! I have never seen that!! Let’s hope they follow through!

Being able to duel anywhere in this giant world they’ve created is like giving us near-infinite map variability due to the terrain! ^^

So, will a feature like this ever be added? I know it was mentioned a while ago that Jonathan Sharp spoke a while ago about adding some sort of PvE reward incentive in a “state of the game talk”, but has that incentive ever been clarified since?

Honestly, the only reason I don’t SPvP is because it does not influence the real part of the game at all. And yes, I’m calling the PvE/WvW part of the game the “real” part, because content wise it does comprise more than 90% of the game.

I also want SPvP to actually give me rewards that effect the real part of the game (it’d be nice to trade glory for karma).

and lastly I’d love dueling to be added to the PvP world to have 1v1 matches in a map rotation of nearly infinite variability is a dream.

This is just a technical question, because many people argue that costume brawling could easily be retooled into dueling.

And this idea seems to make sense to an extent, I mean, costume brawling itself with its new abilities and “damage” system seems like it would have been even more complex to program than basic dueling. The idea stems from the fact that basic dueling would just utilize the abilities we already have and denote each participant as attackable so that their HP would actually drop.

Anyone have any insight or ideas into how the process of creating dueling/retooling costume brawling would actually work?

Opinion why SPvP is dying and WvW is thriving

in PvP

Posted by: Latorn.4209

Latorn.4209

not really because of rewards. WvW have no rewards after you got your 500 for gift. Karma is useless , xp is useless and gold is barely enough to keep up gear repair. What make WvW better it’s because it’s more fun. You are not bunkering all the time. You get to kill people .

So basically what I hear you saying is that all rewards and currency in this game are useless. lol.

What is your evidence of WvW doing great? Doing better than PvP is not surprising at all since despite the fantasy, most MMO players don’t want to play a MOBA or an “e-sport”… Arena is like the least popular thing in WoW, I think?

I gave a reason why I thought it was doing better than SPvP, actual rewards, maybe “thriving” was a bad word to choose. I would say it’s doing pretty well though, what is your evidence that it isn’t doing well? My server has a healthy queue time for the Eternal BGs.

And Arena is the least popular thing in WoW??? For one, it’s what they’ve built their “e-sport” on, for evidence as to it’s popularity just look at twitch: http://www.twitch.tv/directory/game/World%20of%20Warcraft:%20Mists%20of%20Pandaria

Arena was pretty much what I did when I played WoW =P

WvW appears doing great because there are people in it doing their PvE dailies and also leeching event completion rewards from tower zergs.

I wouldn’t be surprised if people who actually play the siege warfare game is fewer than the ones playing sPvP.

Another assumption :/ Odd how the WvW forums are consistently more active than the SPvP forums, dontcha think?

Any chance of raising server population?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Latorn.4209

Latorn.4209

There is a clear definable risk to raising the server caps. While raising the cap would make it easier for people to create a character on a full server, it would also hurt those servers that are on the other side of the scale. There are a handful of servers that need more people.

Filling full servers and allowing transfers/new player to the fullest servers only serves to unbalance the experience further than it is now. The cap is necessary to balance populations – to enrich the PVE experience and create a more competitive WvW landscape.

With that in mind, the solution to “wanting to play alongside friends” needs to be convincing all of those friends to move to one of the lesser populated servers. I know that seems like a hassle and people don’t want to give up spots on the top tier WvW servers, but it is the healthiest solution for the game as a whole.

As it stands, there is very little incentive to roll on a less populated server. The cap is the only thing keep populations in check across the board.

Aye, the only problem would be is that I rolled on Tarnished Coast due to it being the unofficial RP server XD Also I’ve had a guild since launch on TC that has attained a few upgrades and influence that I would lose when transferring.
