(edited by LeCreaux.3087)
I have not been hacked in GW2, but many years ago I did get both my GW1 and WoW accounts stolen at the same time. I now know how they did it…both had the same login. Even though the password was complex and my system was secure, the criminal didn’t need to hack the login or my system—just had to get the login from any of the web sites I probably used it on as well.
Today we’ve all learned to use unique logins to every system. I use a generator for all my passwords so none are remotely related to each other or anything else.
I have played online games for over 15 years. I have yet to have a single one of my accounts “hacked” so clearly it is very possible to avoid being “hacked”.
The thing is, all these “hackings” are not hackings at all. They are either using a weak password, using the same password everywhere, having a keylogger, sharing account details or simply getting tricked into pressing a harmful link in an email (which is btw warned about on this very forum)
Have to disagree here. The guy is a victim, nobody deserves to be a victim. Even if you leave your keys in your car you don’t deserve to have it stolen, although it is an easier target. Cars and accounts don’t steal themselves. Don’t get so desensitized to the act that you don’t see the crime in it.
It is sort of an industry practice to be able to recover accounts and items, the likelihood is high in MMOs for that to be needed. It perplexes a lot of us that it’s not built in to their design. I’m sure ArenaNet is aware of the need for it as well (we all hope).
Happened to me also. All nicknames gone.
The OP’s post did not mention whether they were swearing AT one of their teammates. There is difference between saying, “Aw kitten, I missed the last jump for the JP! I was SO CLOSE! God kitten kitten it!” and “You kittenkittenfuzzykitten, I hope your kitten rots off and you have to lick it up, you kitten!!”
The language filter is there to allow for people who are OK with seeing swear words; it does NOT give you license to abuse other people or act like a kitten. I strongly suspect that the OP was suspended because he/she was doing the latter.
GW2 doesn’t treat the filter like other MMOs do. Foul language will get you suspended. The filter is to protect other players — not to enable profanity.
1859893kittenLing U.6918:You won’t get a suspension for a slip of the tongue
How do they know if you typed with your tongue? IMO, there’s no such thing as a “slip” when you’re typing. If you spelled it, you dealt it.
While the nature of the Internet makes repercussions more likely (in a way) you can still have a metaphorical slip of the tongue while typing. It’s the equivalent of being made, or such, and punching the wall. Not a great idea, but sometimes you do it before you stop yourself.
This assumes the existence of a “stop yourself” instinct. For those who lack it, suspensions provide the hot stove.
The moment a player gets on my nerves with something they type I put them on ignore so I don’t read anything from them again. If they typed something profane or abusive I also report them.
There’s no reason to respond or even deal with misbehaving players. Let ArenaNet sort them out, that’s what they pay their staff to do. We’re just supposed to play the game.
I empty my ignore list regularly, but if the same player gets on it repeatedly I give them a nickname to remind me to leave them there.
The way I see it the person laying dead for five minutes is more reportable for wasting a slot in WvWs that someone else could be using, rather then the ones keeping an eye on his spying, regardless of what they have to do to pass the time wasted whilst spotting his corpse for nefarious activity, or did you close it because of the spying is reportable?
Once you’re in WvW you can do all kinds of things…including laying dead. You can craft, use the TP, gather, do karma stuff, skill points, explore, role play, jumping puzzles, etc.
first off all this person is violationing with the Code of Conduct and should be suspended. In my personal opinion lifetime.
Look closely…this is just somebody being a troll on a fan site—not in the game nor on the official site.
She’s unable to post on the forums, but as submitted a ticket
Pretty sure the forums are unaffected by game suspensions, based on how many posts we see from suspended players pleading their cases.
In any case, support tickets from the account owner are the only way to go. The mods have repeatedly posted that testimonials carry no weight in their account actions.
Isn’t that sort of like letting speeders buy $10 doughnuts instead of getting speeding tickets?
I think ArenaNet (as well as the rest of us) would rather people just not do some of the bad things they do in the game. Players really hate not playing, so much so they’d gladly pay $10 to avoid it. That’s not much of a motivator to behave.
Support tickets have always worked for me. They’ve fixed or explained email issues, authenticator issues, and trouble connecting my GW1 and GW2 accounts.
It’s probably not clear to everybody that your GW2 login is NOT your support login, they’re independent. Two separate logins. There’s no need to have other people make a forum post about your account issues, your support login will work no matter what’s going on with your account.
I would kindly ask people to not judge a friends/sisters/brothers/girlfriends/etc suspension as wrong on Arenanet’s side untill he ticket is resolved.
Or better yet, let the “friend/brother/sister” take care of their own business. I’ve seen posters defend their “friend/sister/brother” so emotionally and with painstaking detail it makes you wonder who got banned…them or their “friend/sister/brother”.
Never a good idea to use development tools or network utilities when playing an online game. You’re not alone in being a developer who plays MMOs, but those things have to be off when you get online or it looks like you’re up to something.
Although I’m now retired, I spent around 30 years doing both development and network management in various countries. One MMO flagged me for having a network utility running and I learned my lesson. It’s easier to just shut them off and avoid a hassle, they don’t have the time or inclination to figure out what you were doing with them.
Your cousin’s commander probably would prefer he double check his gear and make sure everything else is in order rather than getting distracted by an MMO and forgetting something.
If there’s a three-peat you should make this into a web comic. All the stereotypes are represented (the anonymous banned “friend”, the emotional guildmate rescuing the online “girl”, the guild lawyer, etc).
But seriously, something sounds fishy. This “friend” has been struck by lightning twice for the same thing…the two accounts were independent of each other, right? There’s some hoodwinkery afoot here.
If I’m reading this right…
1. You made a post, in a thread, challenging forum moderation of a thread that hadn’t been created.
2. You got infracted for challenging forum moderation of a thread that didn’t exist.
3. You made a whole thread challenging forum moderation.
Using a flux capacitor now to see how this will end…

If this is any indication of your normal behavior then it’s probably deserved.
I hate to see what you’d do if you got a speeding ticket. Throw eggs at the police car, curse at the judge, and throw chairs in the court?
same here. we nearly had the upgrade for the guild-trecks… bounty for 50 merrits also completed and now guild is gone..
guildbank with items/gold… gone … members wasted gold for influence as well. nice ANET.
what now? how to communicate?
how to gather all players again together!?
lets see what the support is doing..

One thing ArenaNet has made clear since day one and have remained consistent about is enforcement of their ToS. It’s no secret by now that daring them to enforce it is a losing bet.
The guild name is Hands of My Octopus, with the tag [Homö]. I can see how there could be a problem with the tag, but not having a chance to just change the tag before deletion is very rude.
Looks like you proc’d [Lex Talionis].
(edited by LeCreaux.3087)
…it has never been the subject of being banned on any other game/mmo/forum etc I’ve ever used…
You can’t really compare GW2 to other games in ToS enforcement. Nearly every MMO has the same standards, there’s nothing unusual about GW2, but other titles just don’t enforce theirs. That’s what a lot of us respect about ArenaNet.
I’ve also had to refrain from using character names I’ve used before, and some that I really liked. But I know they have attributes that violate the ToS and I want to play the game more than I want to sneak in a name, even if I did get away with it in other games. Nothing bad, but against the rules none the less.
Getting same error.
Edit: Is working now.

If you cannot report them — and I do know the blink out quickly — then you can add the area (and world) to the Bot Hot Spot thread.
Thanks for helping!
Pretty much all over Queensdale on Tarnished Coast server, but especially right outside the Divinity starting area.
First few times I saw it I thought it was culling. Then I started seeing the same names again and again, and other players started calling them out on map chat. I was able to report a few of them by friending them and right-click reporting as bots.
They had real names, guild tags, and gear so I assume they’re stolen accounts.
Apparently this is not a new problem, I saw a bunch of posts about this in the “Bot Hot Spots” thread.
I’ve been doing all the recommendations…screencapping, friending, etc…and reporting as bots.
In Queensdale I frequently see characters suddenly appear next to a gathering node, farm it, and disappear. Sometimes I see the same characters doing it all over the zone.
I’ve been trying to memorize their names, friend them, then report them as bots. But I’m not sure they’re botting, I figure they’re probably hacking somehow. They appear and disappear so fast it’s difficult to remember their names, especially if it’s a long or complex name.
What is the best way to handle this? Report as bot as what?
Looks like you do know what word they don’t like so the choice is pretty clear. If you want to play the game that word has to go. The word could be “oxygen” for all it matters, if they don’t like it then just pick something else.

I’ve somehow ended up buying karma items while looking at them before and a few times have bought gear I couldn’t even equip.
In my opinion you should be able to sell back karma items if you don’t equip them.
Just add “Cash on Delivery” to the email system with a timer that the seller can set. Either the buyer pays up or the item comes back in the mail.
Edit: just thought of something…maybe ArenaNet specifically wants to track gold transfers via the Trading Post to keep tabs on gold sellers.
(edited by LeCreaux.3087)
Unfortunately I don’t think it’s harsh at all. I feel TERRIBLE for you, but that’s what the trading post of for. >.< You should never trade by mail. It’s common sense. Again I feel awful for you but its completely (not partially) your fault. Sorry
Have to disagree with blaming the victim, the scammer is the real bad guy. The victim is only guilty of being naive. Without the criminal there is no crime.
That same logic would make homeowners at fault for home invasions for opening their door to a stranger, store owners at fault for shoplifting, and on and on. The criminal is the bad guy.
I agreee with most of your points, but the bigger priority is Nightcapping/ stale rankings/gameplay than commander books.
In a 24-hour global MMO what you’re calling “nightcapping” is simply normal game play. If anything, losing territory overnight mixes things up. It would be kind of boring if things rarely changed hands. I don’t think that one is ever going to change, much less be a priority to change.
The rankings, however, are probably going to get even more stable now that transfers are no longer free and that’s going to get stale fast for whichever server is always on the short end of it. I think they should ALWAYS switch the first and last place servers no matter what (except the overall first and last of course).
The “commander” thing just doesn’t make sense to me. Once you have that icon it should indicate you have WvW experience. Right now it’s too often just players wanting to tell others what to do. A lot of us simply ignore them until they we see them earn it. I’d really like to have confidence in that blue dot when I see it.
One of the strongest features of this game is enforcement of the ToS. Regardless of everything else in the game, witnessing actual enforcement of standards is priceless. I hope it never changes. For those of us who were middle-aged when the whole MMO genre became popular, this game is like a civilized breath of fresh air.
I read the whole thing and have mixed opinions. I agree that commander ability should be based on WvW success, that’s definite. I agree that it would be more motivating (and fun) if guilds’ names were shown on anything they’ve claimed instead of just a banner.
While I do agree that WvW favors zerg-vs-zerg I don’t think it takes away from the fun of WvW. Mass is a factor in actual warfighting, it just is what it is. It stinks when a “commander” keeps throwing a smaller mass at a bigger mass when they should avoid it. But that goes back to the first point…commander ability should be awarded based on victories and not income.
Either way, I enjoy WvW and the anonymous nature of it in GW2. It really comes down to whether or not you enjoy that kind of PvP for its own sake or if you need more personalized rewards (i.e. recognition, notoriety, whatever).
(edited by LeCreaux.3087)
Perhaps if you switch the “B” and the “M” of the two names, it appears to be naughty?
Pretty obvious…what happened to the old Gaile who would tell people to stop being coy. Is this some new Gaile?
Now that everybody knows ArenaNet is serious about their ToS, anybody with a questionable name should probably put in a support ticket on themselves and try to get a name change before getting suspended.
To be honest, I thought the named looked German or something and wouldn’t have reported it. But apparently you knew it was against the ToS when you created it so you really can’t complain about getting away with it for 6 months when so many others have gotten busted for the same thing.
“Don’t bother, they’ve started to introduce new gear with higher stats, it’s World of Warcraft all over again. Stay away from it man.”
I would be OK with this if the rest of the game was as engaging as other MMOs. I also gave up years of progression in another MMO for GW2, and did it for the same reason (get off the gear treadmill). I’ve played MMOs since the 1990s and was hoping that GW2 was going to be the heir to DAoC’s RvR.
I like my Asura, a lot. I like the skins I’ve earned for him and the dyes I’ve worked for. I think I’ve gotten pretty good at my build. I like that ArenaNet enforces their behavior standards (witnessing that was worth the price of the game).
Some of the things I’d change:
- more responsive attack commands
- a wardrobe
- /target functionality
- moveable UI objects
- STOP adding every player I search for to “friends”
- telephone support
- character recovery
- add comment field to “report” functionality
- full right-click menu on players in WvW
- implement DAoC’s web-based RvR scoreboard (keep status, player stats, etc)
- implement some kind of Guild WvW ranking system
I’m sure there’s more ideas out there.
A loyal fanbase created by trust from the developers who understand what their aimed audience would like to see in the gem shop.
Things I would have paid cash (not gold) for gems to buy:
- more Gem Store skins for armor and weapons (pieces, not full sets)
- ALL skins should be available in combat (including sunglasses)
- mounts
- wardrobe slots
From a business perspective, I’d assume most of the paying “casual” customers don’t WANT to grind for things. Offer them desirable Gem Store items and they’ll buy them. If the first update had these items alone then ArenaNet would be rolling in real world cash from all of us.
(edited by LeCreaux.3087)
I was a DAoC player. Here’s the formula I thought killed it:
1. The Trials of Atlantis expansion added overpowered weapons that only the lifers could earn.
2. Coupled with the rampant radar hackers it was not worth the trouble to try to fight them (radar + one-shot win ability).
3. WoW came out and you didn’t have to anymore.
I’ve already resubscribed to my old MMO. The whole Ascended gear thing was the last straw.
I was tolerating the hacking, the bots, the unstable trading post, the lack of slash commands, account recovery, telephone support and other standard MMO features, the total randomness of rewards (mystic forge), and all manner of quest and other bugs.
But if I’m going to play a treadmill it might as well be a game that’s stable and predictable so at least I feel like I have some kind of control. I don’t feel that right now in GW2. I hate to return to a troll-infested game, but for me that’s the better alternative right now. Hopefully GW2 matures eventually.
(edited by LeCreaux.3087)
None of my gear items have their original exotic skins. Every time I discover a skin I like better I transmute it over the exotic stats. Most, if not all, are karma skins. A lot of the armor skins are lower level, my weapons have Asura Tier 3 skins. I think ArenaNet did a great job with the Asura Tier 3 weapon skins.
I consider myself casual in every MMO, even though sometimes I invest a LOT of time. I dabble in this and that to various degrees, but not hardcore into any of them. Just enough to have fun.
I consider casual more of a play style than a time commitment. You can play 24/7 and still be a casual fun-loving player.
(edited by LeCreaux.3087)
For me, the gear treadmill is what made me want to quit other MMOs each and every time they added a new tier.
GW2 and its promise of no gear treadmill was what made me abandon my previous MMO, which I’d been heavily invested in for years.
I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels extremely betrayed by this, no matter how small some may say the increment is. It is what it is, another tier of gear after I’ve already farmed full exotics for my main character and am planning my next one. This is exactly what I did not want.

BTW, you can “friend” commanders and see how many achievement points they have…it’s at least some kind of measure of how experienced they are. We have some really good commanders on TC with 2000+ achievement points and good attitudes.
I’m a casual player and have 1400 points, whenever I see a “commander” with fewer points than me I’m cautious about them.
That is not a very useful metric. I have 3000+ and I probably wouldn’t be a very good commander either. :p
A person who plays nothing but WvW would also have very low achievement scores.
A good commander needs good “cat herding” ability. I doubt there is anything ANet can do to test for charisma/leadership.
That’s the truth. I see too many “commanders” who are passive aggressive, very unlike actual commanders (I’m a retired vet). I put those on ignore and never hear from them again.
About the only thing that can be done, in my opinion, to “qualify” players for rank icons is WvW achievement points (building siege, repairing, taking things).
In fact, it might be a good idea to implement icons for achievement titles. For example an “Artillery Officer” icon for players who’ve deployed a certain number of siege pieces.
Come to think of it, why NOT implement actual rank icons (Lieutenant, Captain, Major, etc.) for tiers of WvW achievements. Then we’d know for sure what experience and success level we’re dealing with. I’d reserve top ranks for successfully TAKING things, not just building/repairing things.

Make a secondary Commander icon (in white) that can be bought with WvW badges (500-1000) and perhaps a related set of WvW account based achievements. At least that way you know the person you are following knows the general layout of the maps, map points, objectives and at a minimum, some strategy.
There you go, that’s a good standard for earning WvW rank vs buying it.
Your car burned up and you lost thousands of dollars worth of possessions…
Your GW2 account shouldn’t really be on the short list of concerns, don’t you sort of need a car and computer for school? Maybe you shouldn’t be worrying about playing a MMO right now.

I just wish there was a way to turn off the little blue diamonds all over my map without turning anything else off.
In my opinion there should be a WvW achievement requirement for the commander book. You don’t make 100g in WvW, although you might spend it. Seems odd they’d make a PvE requirement for a WvW ability.
BTW, you can “friend” commanders and see how many achievement points they have…it’s at least some kind of measure of how experienced they are. We have some really good commanders on TC with 2000+ achievement points and good attitudes.

When I read about the “Ascended” gear all I could think about was “Gear Grind”. No Thanks.
What I like about the game at this point is that I can gear all my characters in basic exotics and then enjoy the game on each of them. I can add legendary weapon skins for eye-candy and that’s a nice enough carrot.
This was supposed to be a game for the masses that didn’t have a grind, you enjoy it from day one. Like in every other game, the “hardcore” players are the minority. They’ll flee to the next game, don’t disrupt the game for the rest of us to cater to them.

Something else to consider is that some players with “tainted” accounts are trying to sell them to unsuspecting new players. Those accounts are probably banned on day one, or will be eventually even if the buyer plays clean.
For example: I reported a player for “fly hacking” in WvW and also Googled his account name. What returned was a bunch of his boasts on game sites about using dungeon and WvW hacks and getting whispers about being reported.
I assume at some point he got banned because he stopped logging in, but Google returned posts with him selling his character. They were really nice posts with pictures, apparently it had legendary weapons and everything, with no mention of being banned. If anybody bought that thing from him they’ll end up posting here sooner or later.

Plus you’re sort of contradicting yourself with your post history. It shows 10 days ago you were “getting into the PvP/WvW side of things” and looking for a guild. Sure you didn’t just find one on TC that you’re wanting to join up with?
