Again, overkill. You don’t need race cars, just aerodynamic beetles with awesome paint jobs.

crit based characters and downscaling

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Leablo.2651

The difference is that crit chance is derived from precision, which is scaled down.

Crit damage is a direct bonus, and if you’ll notice, there is less of it on lower-level items than on higher-level items. So even though, as a percentage, it should scale inherently, that’s not how it gets put on items. So the scaling itself is working properly.

A few thing that could be done, is to leave some of it behind so the casuals or new players could still experience it after, so they do not miss out. While the Hardcore who get it done get the rewards of putting the in time. That would work for me.

Being rewarded for investing time is neither casual nor hardcore, it’s just tryharding.

I’m a little surprised at how many of these threads are popping up so I’ll answer this one for those who don’t get it. Note that it’s not as interesting when you have to explain it.

The Queen’s Speech was a ruse. Anet vandalized and defaced the Queen’s Speech page over time, ultimately revealing the actual content release to be Clockwork Chaos. There is no speech. In-game, Jennah was going to give a speech, but it gets interrupted right at the start, in the cutscene with Lord Faren. So the speech was effectively canceled by Scarlet’s attack on the Pavilion, as hinted at by the vandalizing of the release page.

It’s like saying it would be a nice change if GW2 introduced an army first person shooter mini game. It has nothing to do with GW2, but they should add it any ways.

Army FPS would be overkill. It could just be a SWAT commando in full riot gear. They should absolutely add that to GW2.

Lol…

It is not as easy as 1 + 1 = 2. You are very rarely using all the offensive stats at the same time.

This is why theorycrafting is useless on its on.

Really? If I land an hit in a fight I’m already using power, precision and critical damage. If I take a hit I’m using toughness and vitality. That’s 5 stats and the fight doesn’t look like any bizarre situation now does it?

Item 1 gives you 100 Power.
Item 2 gives you 120 Vitality.

By your logic, item 2 is better since you use both stats but item 2 has more. What went wrong here?

Don’t you remember all the DRAGONs we BASHed not too long ago? That was it, I think.

But to be serious here, I don’t think the dragon’s stories will continue until an expansion comes out (or at least start at a pre-expansion LS). The thing is, if they release such content in the LS now, they would have a lot less to sell later on when they finally do get around to releasing an expac.

That’s assuming the dragons are the alpha and omega of GW2’s story, which I hope is not the case. I’d rather that the entire dragon arc conclude within the next year or singular expansion, and with that closure we can move on to more interesting stories like the ones started in Beyond.

I do not want to be fighting more Branded and Icebrood and Destroyers for the next 4 years/expacks.

I would like to see healing be a more viable playstyle. I would love to see more traits and weapon skills aimed at being a primary healer. I think this would help WvW a lot, if skilled healers could keep groups up versus unskilled zergs.

If a relatively small number of healers could outheal the damage done by a zerg, then in what way would it not become a requirement to have healers? Primary healers are the bane of open grouping.

If you’re going to go there, SAB looks most similar to early 32-bit console platformers, e.g. Crash Bandicoot.

But I think that’s missing the point. If they really wanted an authentic 8-bit experience they would have done up SAB as a camera-locked 2D side scroller. It’s a tribute, not a simulation. The graphics only need to be “bad enough” to stand out.

Possible Compromise

in Clockwork Chaos

Posted by: Leablo.2651

Leablo.2651

Invasions proceed as normal, spawning the current number of champions (meaning the post-fix rate, not the initial, super-high rate we saw on the 20th). Farmers can keep killing these champions however much they please. HOWEVER, any and all champion loot bags that would normally be earned by killing champions tied to the invasion meta-event would be held in reserve until the end of the entire invasion. If the invasion is successfully completed and Scarlet is killed, the player earns all of the loot bags he or she earned. If it fails, the player only receives half the loot bags.

This seems like a good compromise to me because it still allows people to get tons of loot bags, but also provides a major incentive to complete the event.

In other words, you expect farmers to take a huge risk spending their time on invasions, and if they win they only receive what they are already guaranteed to get right now. Why should farmers agree to this? That’s not a compromise at all, that’s blatant unilateralism which favors the completers and is nothing but more whining on your part, thinly veiled as higher discourse.

And yet, I read:

“Time to flood the economy with gold!”
NERFED!
“Time to flood the economy with gold!”
NERFED!
“Time to flood the economy with gold!”
NERFED!

I see a pattern there. Do you see the pattern? ANet does. That’s why they keep nerfing the farms. Figure it out, stop exploiting the game, and maybe they’ll stop nerfing the content. Otherwise you have no one to blame but yourself when they end up nerfing GW2 into WoW.

Gauntlet farming was an activity that was effectively limited by combinations of player profession and skill. On the other hand, Anet continues to introduce new methods of producing more gold which are accessible to everyone. This includes the minigame rewards, achievement rewards, and champion bags. How many new bags of coins did they implement in the last 2 months alone? If you take the total effect of a few people farming a lot of gold, versus a lot of people farming a little gold, the latter is probably going to affect the economy more, not only by virtue of a larger total amount of gold entering the economy, but also because those people are more likely to distribute the gold across a wider variety of goods, leading to a generalized increase in the price index (i.e. inflation). By contrast, the handful of expert gauntlet farmers seem to report spending the majority of their gold on certain high-value items like those needed for a legendary, which only created a temporary increase in demand for those specific items (which were already high-end items).

In short, if Anet was that keen on stopping inflation, they would have cut the Pavilion rewards, not the Gauntlet rewards. They also could have, and would have implemented daily limits on the Gauntlet during the first 2 weeks, instead of waiting for the new content to arrive. They would not have introduced all these new sources of gold over the past 2 months. They also would not have introduced a new content update that is an inventory-filling loot fest, and which gives significant rewards to everyone on the map regardless of whether you win or lose. So yeah, there is a pattern and your reading is wrong. Every indication is that Anet wants more gold to enter the economy. What Anet seems not to like is the ability for exceptional individuals to be the ones causing it.

Actually, the settings normally do work to allow both groups to get the balance of speed and quality that they prefer. There seems to be a relatively small group who is experiencing decreased performance even when using decreased quality, regardless of whether they are using low-end or high-end hardware. We can’t really say why that is happening, maybe it’s a bug, maybe it’s their configuration.

In neither the Ebonhawk page nor the Ascalon Settlement page (or anywhere else that I could find) does it say that they are self-governed. Also, nowhere does it say that they are not, but since Anet has decided that the dignitary of Kryta comes from Ebonhawk, it’s safe to say that they consider Ebonhawk to be Krytan.

Given that the entire point of this thread is to point out that Anet may have made a mistake in associating the Ebonhawke Emissary with Kryta, there is nothing “safe” in saying that they consider Ebonhawke to be Krytan. That would be begging the question.

in Clockwork Chaos

Posted by: Leablo.2651

Leablo.2651

It sounds like an issue with rendering priority. This could use some tweaking. In case Anet is taking suggestions, I think rendering priority should be:

1. Loot/lootable corpse
2. Living enemies/Downed allies
3. Friends and guildmates
4. Other players and neutrals

I actually haven’t checked loot after the update, but before in the Crown Pavilion I could not see some of the loot bags and chests being dropped, and there were no “Search” prompts either. I resorted to running around spamming my loot key and then I’d see a string of items get added to my inventory.

The “environment culling” existed prior to this update, but some people are probably only seeing it now due to the added strain of loading the additional character models.

The nameplates ARE a big off-putting, but they can be turned off (and I do at times). I’ve never seen a player nameplate with that setting turned off (unless you mouse over the player or target them).

According to reports, the nameplate setting only works for players nearby (who aren’t culled), e.g. it only affects the players you would have seen under the previous culling rules. I assume this is an oversight and will be fixed soon…

From my understanding, culling is a server side process and cannot be turned ON/OFF for individual clients (players).

No, that’s how it used to work. The whole point of this update was to move it to a client-side process.

BTW, I’m running a 2 year old i5 dual core system and the one thing that really improved my performance was upgrading my memory to 16GB (obviously, 64 bit OS is a must here)

That’s strange, you must have a lot of stuff running in your background. GW2 is still a 32-bit app and unless it is using elaborate memory hacks (which I doubt) it still can’t utilize anything past 4 GB. It sounds like you have 12 GB of system/background overhead.

and turning off my swap file

Yes, that would be it.

Leablo.2651

I honestly cannot imagine why anyone would have the “Rightclick to interact/attack” option on. I highly recommend turning it off and simply using leftclick to target. It solves the issue you just mentioned.

I think you need a better imagination if you can’t figure out the appeal of reducing the number of inputs by 50%. Your suggested workaround is fine for the moment but it doesn’t at all solve the issue that was raised; technically you’re off-topic.

New right click behavior

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Leablo.2651

Leablo.2651

I’m not sure if this was an intended change or not, but seems new and unwanted.

The issue: if you right click on an object, intending to use the camera, and not the object, and you release the right mouse button over the same object, no matter how much you’ve panned the camera around in the intervening time, the object will be “interacted” with or otherwise selected if there is no interaction available.

The expected behavior is that the right-click to interact only triggers for a nominal “click”, not a drag-and-drop type of input.

To understand why this is an issue, be in a large crowd (Crown Pavilion works for this), target the boss, and now move around while panning the camera. Within a few seconds the boss will no longer be your target because you’ve selected an ally instead.

Another thing that frequently comes up is if you’re standing next to an NPC, and you want to pan the camera around a little. The next instant, you are talking to the NPC.

This behavior makes it so that using the right-click camera results in an extremely high rate of unintended inputs.

Toughness does nothing...

in Queen's Jubilee

Posted by: Leablo.2651

Leablo.2651

Function of damage dealt is of the form K/X, implying the derivative with respect to X is -K/(X^2) implying that the greater the value of X the smaller K/X will change at larger values of X.

Similarly you can take the second derivative for 2K/(X^3), which means that the slope of the damage rate decrease is increasing with respect to X.

And for larger values of K? You did not specify that K was constant. (The game doesn’t either.)

It’s very, very obvious. Like I pointed out this is for a continuous rate and not for the large, discrete amounts of damage that end your life abruptly in most cases.

The issue is that you assume ‘continuous’ and ‘large’ are mutually exclusive. This is objectively false.

By the way, why the hostility?

I dislike inaccurate theorycrafting being presented as facts for gameplay. It’s nothing personal. See my previous post for the correct interpretation of the effects of stacking toughness.

Toughness does nothing...

in Queen's Jubilee

Posted by: Leablo.2651

Leablo.2651

exactly – the relative benefit decreases with each point of toughness spent, which is why it’s more useful at the lower end of the spectrum.

Demonstrably false. Compare +1 toughness to +100. +1 toughness will in the vast majority of cases make no difference to survivability, whereas +100 might. So 0/1 < n/100, where n > 0. The larger investment returns proportionally more.

if you get killed with one hit, adding 100 toughness so an enemy has to hit you twice is great. starting at high toughness and adding another 100 so an enemy which would take 10 hits now takes 11 hits isn’t that great anymore.

This is contrived because an enemy that took 10 hits to kill you is already dead and not of any real concern for a player. You do not stack toughness to live longer against dead enemies. You stack toughness to survive that first or second hit from a stronger opponent. The stronger the opponent, the more toughness that is required to make a difference. Assuming you are not a perfect dodger, the “benefit per point” argument is only so much theorycrafting unless you are willing to either accept an inability to progress at these points or require other players to carry you through them.

This was certainly an exploit. An exploit is taking advantage of a bug or loophole and playing the game in a way that was not intended by the developers.

What was the bug or loophole?

Obviously, it was never intended for players to be making hundreds of gold by farming Deadeye. This farming very much had the potential to significantly impact our in-game economy. If it wasn’t considered an exploit, Deadeye would never have been changed.

I haven’t tried myself yet, but according to others the changes to Deadeye don’t preclude continuing to make hundreds of gold by farming him, so this appears to be a non sequitur.

Good rule of thumb when it comes to identifying exploits…if it is too good to be true, it most certainly is.

I realize you’re just offering a cliche in lieu of an actual argument here, but for the sake of said argument, define too good. I can certainly think of ways that it could be better.

The gauntlet was probably produced because of the less then satisfactory feedback over the AC refurbishment (or the controversial southsun “dungeon”).

I doubt that. Anet is pretty clear about wanting to produce difference content that serves different audiences. If some players don’t like one piece of content or another, Anet considers that to be the players’ problem. As long as they are serving their target audience with a particular piece of content, it is working as designed.

And the QG isn’t any new concept, it’s just the GW2 reimplementation of Magni’s tournament. Minus the fighting game references.

Well, here’s the thing: Colin oversold the whole “it’s a pirate election” thing.

The way that tokens were handed out, it might as well have been a democratic vote.

Earning the tokens required nothing more than participation, i.e. time. They drop like candy in Aspect Arena and Southsun Survival whether you win or lose, and regardless of your performance. They’re also random drops from doing just about anything.

So really, your ability to vote is just a function of the amount of time you spend playing, regardless of how you play. As always, there is a large group of people who play a little, and a small group of people who play a lot. The collective amount of time that the big group spends playing is x, and the collective amount of time that the small group spends playing is y, where x > y. Though the mechanics are slightly different, the outcome is the same, which is that the majority wins. What they did here was basically a Rube Goldberg version of democracy.

This is not what was advertised in the preview, and I find that more disappointing than the outcome.

Now I have to wonder if the game has been correctly counting all votes. The only thing I can think of that might have been an issue is that I was clicking very fast.
