If what you say is true, the game wouldn’t exist. Zero ROI projects aren’t really popular with investors and employees can’t buy groceries with promises and good will.

I missed the part where he claimed that Anet was a non-profit.

Also you’re conflating employees with investors – people can be both, but most aren’t, and status as one is independent of the other. To wit, from an investor’s perspective, an employee is a cost, which makes them part of the I. And the employees receive the same salary regardless of the R. (Any operating profit that gets distributed as a salary bonus is pocketed mostly by executives.)

And where buying groceries is concerned, you may want to inquire as to what happens to the contractors after Anet lays them off after 12 months instead of hiring them on as regular employees. If you support the gem store business model, which enables short-term production cycles and the consequent treatment of developers as a disposable labor force, then you tacitly approve of and encourage these practices.

No one wants to run a dungeon with a Warrior in a bikini or a schoolgirl outfit.

Anet is the one who put in a bow that shoots rainbow unicorns, nobody asked for that but plenty would use it if they could. Pretty much everyone who is asking for the swimsuit costume fully intends to play the game with that look. Your personal distaste for such items does not indicate any reluctance on Anet’s part or that of the larger community. Anet already produced the assets without any prodding from us – this thread is only here because we became aware that the costume already exists. And the simple fact is that they would probably sell more of these than any other cosmetic item thus far, more so if they can be equipped (which would also drive transmutations).

MegaServers Inadvertantly Hurts WvW

in WvW

Leablo.2651

There are lots of PvE players that have a serious server pride without even doing much WvW and lets not forget the threads where servers and guilds were racing to kill Teq or 3-headed Wurm as first.

They were doing it for themselves or their guilds, not for the random population as a whole. The server is merely the most identifiable name for the alliance of guilds and players that did it, because most people wouldn’t know the individual guilds or players or can’t be bothered to list them. Though that didn’t stop some guilds from advertising their own successes either. In any case you are conflating “this is the server we happen to be on” with “we did it for this server because of its name”.

Everytime Free transfers are introduced a lot of AP whores migrate to get the best rewards and Guilds change locations to get more competition on prove themselves, but at the same time a bunch of other people also stay trough thick and thin while their server dies. Server pride is a thing either you like it or not.

If you’re not a big competitive guild there is very little reason to jump servers, and a very good reason to stay. Your influence and upgrades don’t carry over. Regardless of whether you leave because you want better competition for your guild, or you stay because you want to keep your guild intact, it’s the guilds that people care about, not the servers. That’s consistent.

DirectX is a proprietary dead end. Windows market share is declining. Holy Trinity Is Called "Holy" For A Reason

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Leablo.2651

Leablo.2651

It works. I don’t mean to burst A-Net’s bubble with the whole, “ground shaking” idea of removing the trinity, but there’s a reason why every MMO uses it. It’s not as frustrating as every mob being uncontrollable; since, with no tank I guess that’s what A-Net wants. As a thief, it is very frustrating to have a boss turn around and one shot you in a split second. Everything PvE oriented is uncontrolled, and very badly structured.

The fact that a boss can aggro you is not a problem. That makes the game more interesting. The problem is the one-shotting. That makes the game less interesting, and it doesn’t matter if you’re a thief or a heavy. OHKOs basically invalidates having defensive stats, and that destroys build diversity. Guess what also destroys build diversity? Assigning fixed roles to players. Holy Trinity is not any better than Holy Zerker, it’s just a different kind of lame. Basically what you want is to be dps who is effectively immune from damage, because that’s what other MMOs gave you. It’s worth pointing out that this is why the MMO genre has a pretty poor reputation for being video games. A game ordinarily requires the player to be an active participant. Guild Wars was always a bit unique as an MMO that actually felt like a video game.

In GW1, all enemies would actively prefer to target light armor. Oh did that Monk just heal someone? Every moving enemy will aggro on him. But how you protect your backline is by putting down cripples. To tank, you have to force the enemy to fight you. Just like players would in a small-team match. Heavy armor is a deterrent because attrition takes longer. Trinity is just a fancy way of describing a crutch that forces the AI to act stupidly by attacking the hardest target. Tanking should require skill as with any other role. But again, in GW1 you had time for tactics because the enemies weren’t one-shotting everyone. Boss damage needs to be slowed down a bit to allow for more varied tactics, and as a corollary dodging should be seriously revamped or removed because it spoils the flow of combat. That’s all there is to it.

I don’t know about others, but while forming groups for dungeons there is always a need of a tank, A-Net will never officially take away the trinity anyways, guardians will always be there for tanking. As a thief, will always NOT tank.

Only bad groups think that a tank is required. If someone is tanking then you’re not stacking. And if you’re not stacking you should be good at kiting. I reiterate, tanks are for people who just want to have effective invulnerability, and most MMOs are not games.

WoW’s endgame is very much so superior to GW2’s, and will forever be, unless some sort of trinity is occurring. And GW2 will always be inferior for this reason.

Let me make something very clear: as much as I think GW2 needs improvement, it is still a game worth improving. Using WoW as an example of any game design principle demonstrates extremely poor taste in video games. We need less of WoW infecting Guild Wars, the fact that GW2 is so much closer to WoW than GW1 is the cause for most of its failures. We need more of Guild Wars 1 in Guild Wars 2. The game’s combat needs to be more tactical, and completely dispose of the idea that it should cater to one type of mindless drone or another.

Knights and Player Psychology

Leablo.2651

For me, completely changing builds (and sometimes even using different characters) for different content is one of the beautiful things of the game. Not as much as it was for GW1, but still quite interesting.

I just said that the game forcing players to tweak their builds towards some specific goals is something I find positive.

GW1 never forced you to change your build. I would know since I completed the entire game, all campaigns, with multiple characters, using only the default selection of skills (the free ones) and henchmen. Optimizing your build pays out spades in terms of safety, reliability, and efficiency, i.e. making the game much easier, but you never have to do anything in one particular way as long as you have some kind of strategy and good execution.

Firstly because is something I like.
Secondly because, otherwise, the content is likely to be extremely unchallenging for me (since I will definitely adapt) and I’ll lost interest. If I do not adapt, however, I’ll lost interest for different reasons.

And here we have it, the sad attempt at pretending to be an elite player. You claim it’s unchallenging if you don’t have to change builds, and yet the whole point of you changing your build is to make the game easier and more readily completable. Like I said, I never went out of my to change the type of build my characters had during my GW1 campaigns and that of course made the game harder. Hard enough that players like you would probably find it impossible to complete. But I had no real problems doing it and that’s because I’m a decent player and can complete objectives however I choose, as long as the game does not put up artificial barriers like a timed DPS test. Forcing players to use a particular build is lowering the skill cap. It’s saying, wear this, and as long as you do, you win. That has nothing to do with challenge, that is just jumping through hoops and mistaking that for being a good player. See also: gear treadmill.

If you were interested in a challenge, you would be advocating for purely defensive gear against the knights. Or no gear at all. I’ve gone soloing like that before.

Polished Content?

Leablo.2651

This is a double edge sword really. Anet holds the update another week and people complain because its late.

Except that you completely made that up. Nobody asked Anet to move to a 2-week cycle, and it’s been a source of skepticism and criticism ever since they announced it.

Sure, preferences come in all flavors but the people who advocate for 2-week cycles are a tiny minority. Even if you wanted content at that pace, it’s become pretty clear that Anet cannot deliver on it, so even among those people there are detractors because the pacing is clearly affecting the quality of the releases.

But that’s beside the point, since Anet wasn’t driven one way or the other by player preferences. The 2-week cycle is there because some pointy headed boss saw that this maximizes marketing opportunities and decreed that it be so. Whether people complain or not is secondary to whether people will buy crap or not, and they do. In short, your loot is bugged and your achievements are broken so that some whale can have his limited time gem store skin.

People are trolling the spider

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Posted by: Leablo.2651

Leablo.2651

I’ve had 4 attempts at the spider now.

  • Twice, an idiot started the battle before we had enough people.
  • Once, an idiot ran up the slope to the rubble pile and was caught by the spider.
  • Once, someone was legitimately clearing the trash mobs there and the spider spawned on top of him.

I don’t know that active griefing is actually required here. It seems that if you simply have enough bad players or bad luck, between the two it’s enough to ensure that the achievement is ruined before you even get a legitimate chance to try it. What it boils down to is a bad concept for an achievement and bad implementation, period.

Polished Content?

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Posted by: Leablo.2651

Leablo.2651

To be perfectly realistic, polished code has never been one of Anet’s strengths. Even with old Anet and GW1, bugs were a constant. The difference though is in the ratio of bugs to quality content. When Anet had a full year or more to release expansions, they still had a ton of bugs but there was also a ton of great content. Putting up with the bugs was worth it to play the game. That’s not the case with the living story. They continue to release unpolished code while the game itself is not rewarding nor particularly fun to play. So what happens is that you spend an hour battling boring billion-HP bosses with your zerg in fights that are full of bugs and you don’t even get the rewards or achievements you should have earned.

In short, in GW1 we had the bugs, and we had the entirety of Cantha to explore. In GW2, we have the bugs, and we have…??

Right, guess I’ll wait for another patch on Monday, hopefully.

UV Holo - scorchmark without laser

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Leablo.2651

Leablo.2651

Had a run at the achievement ruined by this bug. We killed the 3 smaller holograms, the big ultraviolet hologram appeared, and then without any kind of warning, a scorchmark just appeared underneath me and I took damage from it. There wasn’t even a laser shot, since I would have been hit by it had there been one.

My guess, there is some carry over interaction from when the Prime Hologram splits up. Like it is preparing a shot or fires it, but then splits up into the 3 smaller ones before the scorchmark triggers (or it “saves” the scorchmark). Then after it reforms into the Ultraviolet Hologram, it generates the scorchmark, long after anyone can reasonably remember where the original laser was fired.

Leablo.2651

You will likely have more than 50 on a map anyway. If you have less then you likely would not have beaten it the old way anyhow.

Unfortunately, you overestimate the appeal of this content. I played on my server last night and we grouped everyone into the same zerg. That got us 30 people.

I’ve also tried forcing guest overflow, but the last time I did that, we managed to kill the knights, and then I got put into a hologram battle where there were literally 3 players – apparently the drill platform itself is separate from the LA instance and supports a SMALLER number of players than allowed in LA where everyone fights the knights. You get overflow upon overflow. The fact that this can even happen is astoundingly stupid. You really think it’s fair to have players go through the struggles of getting the knights down and then follow up by sending them to a situation that is impossible to win? Anet needs to go back to the drawing board with this release. The only argument I can make in Anet’s defense is that this final chapter serves as a perfect summary of all the mistakes they’ve made over the course of the living world.

Glory booster circular logic

in PvP

Posted by: Leablo.2651

Leablo.2651

This isn’t circular reasoning.

We’re not saying we are going to do nothing because we said we would do nothing.

We’re saying we won’t change direction (from the previously stated plans) because it would put many players at a disadvantage, and on top of that these players would be hurt because they listened to us.

Keep in mind, more people used boosters than did not.

I would point out a parallel issue happening with the Living Story. Anet previously stated that Scarlet’s Lair would remain. And so it did – minus the chests that players actually cared about. When some people found that the chests were gone, they just deleted all their leftover ciphers. And then later, Anet said they would restore the chests. Presumably, Anet is not going to go back and restore the ciphers to all the people who deleted them because Anet misled them. Wouldn’t it be “fair” then, to also not restore the chests? Why the double standard?

We seriously considered many different options, and doing nothing seemed the most fair. Do you disagree?

I disagree with framing this as an issue of fairness, as it implies that Anet is interested in producing a fair outcome that can be had. I think the only fair solution would have been for Anet to set out with the intention of compensating players for what Anet intended to take away. The fact is that Anet did not do this, so everything that follows is unfair – not between different groups of players, but between all players and Anet. None of the players in this matter have done anything to provoke having their rewards taken away or being forced to use/waste their rewards under duress. Do you disagree with that? Anet has already unjustly inflicted one form of punishment on one group of players, and according to some seriously disturbed sense of equality, we are now hearing Anet say that the fairest solution is to now unjustly inflict an even greater punishment on the remaining players.

So the correct frame of questioning is not a matter of fairness, because Anet already messed that up. The question now is how many more players Anet intends to screw, and how hard Anet intends to screw them. Do you honestly believe that extending this policy to inflict as much damage on every player as possible is actually the best, fairest solution that can reasonably be implemented?

But that’s getting ahead of ourselves. Let’s go back and ask why it is that Anet did not implement a fair solution in the first place. I can’t help but notice that Anet never consulted with the player community over what we’d like to happen with existing rewards that had to be removed. They didn’t have to ask, since it’s obvious that the players would have asked for some form of compensation. And yet there was none. So we can only assume that Anet didn’t ask because they didn’t want to give players a chance to voice those concerns. “It’s easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.” And further it’s probably safe to assume that Anet wanted to commit to this course of action because it’s much easier to simply delete our stuff than to come up with an exit strategy that is reasonably fair for everyone. I don’t think “doing nothing” is the fairest reasonable solution that can be made. This forum is already full of possible alternatives. However, I do think that “doing nothing” is the only solution you ever intended to use, for reasons of convenience, and everything else you’ve said is an attempt to rationalize the laziness of this approach. Have I said anything that is off-base? If so, please explain how deleting rewards with no compensation ever made it onto the table. As is, the best explanation we have is Grey’s Law.

I don’t actually expect anything to change for glory or for PvP items, though would be pleasantly surprised if Anet took responsibility for this debacle. I write this in the hopes that in the future Anet will not be so cavalier in deleting the rewards that players have worked hard to earn, nor so arrogant in expecting players to accept such consequences without challenge.

Glory booster circular logic

in PvP

Posted by: Leablo.2651

Leablo.2651

A: We will not be converting glory boosters because we announced that we would be phasing out glory in John’s blog post and it wouldn’t be fair to the players that used up all of their boosters since then in preparation for it.

What this distills into is “we will not convert unused boosters because we indicated that there would be no conversion of unused boosters.” This is a dodge, not an explanation.

The players who used the boosters presumably already got a reasonable reward from it, which was the glory boost, and they’re still free to spend that glory. And as much as it might be somewhat unfair if they didn’t really want those glory rewards, it’s infinitely more unfair to give people absolutely nothing when they did not have the time to use their boosters. At the very least, you can convert unused boosters to some nominal amount of glory or other reward, such as dungeon tokens, or badges of honor, according to the player’s preference. There’s no excuse to take away leftover glory boosters and give back nothing in return.

Simply taking away a reward that players have earned is not only bad form, but this whole process of completely replacing a reward system seems to suggest that this game launched with an alpha version of PvP – which does explain its many shortcomings but is still no excuse to take away what players have earned. And that’s not limited to glory boosters, but also to the impending possibility of losing earned equipment and materials down the line. A proper phase-out should include ways to convert all existing rewards to something usable in the post-update environment.

AFKing to get free stuff is a bona fide Guild Wars tradition. See every festival in GW1. If you don’t enjoy getting free stuff, then you’re the one who isn’t a good fit for this game or its core community.

Someone in that thread even joked that because of the way the response was worded, that the location would remain but the chests would be gone. And sure enough!

Well, it’s good that Anet is going to “fix” this problem but none the less, it goes to show that you simply cannot trust Anet to do what they say. Regardless of whether it’s an actual bug or misinformation, or whether it’s intentional malice or an honest mistake. Always take care of your stuff before the next patch. That is the only correct answer.

Bad day for a field trip, kids. I’d hope they got their permission slips signed, but then I remembered they’re orphans.

I get the feeling Rox will earn her warband membership, decide Braham is a lot more fun (or be wooed by his puppy dog eyes), and go off on adventures with him instead, turning Rytlock down at the last minute.

And it will have been Rytlock’s plan all along for Rox to find her own way through life. He was just teaching her to be independent.

So why do people still fail marionette?

O.K. I meant that it punishes full zerk builds that can’t dodge or position themselves. People who are constantly getting 1 shotted should fix that issue.

You get 1 shotted even in PTV gear. It punishes you for getting hit, as it should, but if anything it encourages people to zerk.
