Tried 5 times alrdy and result is the same , being forced to quit because everyone just freaking leaves.

So you’d prefer that the next time you’re forced to quit, that you be punished for it? There’s an old saying about swords having two edges.

I got a lot of tries on my first time there and felt like I could get there, but then ppl had to go, which is fine after having like 7 tries on it.

That’s actually quite generous. In most dungeon PUGs if you wipe 2-3 times on the same boss, somebody will either leave or get kicked.

But after that it is constantly the same , 1 or 2 wipes and like 2-3 ppl just leave. Pretty much wasting other ppl their time.

No, wiping 7 times is a waste of everyone’s time. You’re not gonna kill that boss and even if you could it’d probably be faster to start over with a better group.

And should be punished by a small debuff, that makes it unable to join for a small period of time.

Pointless. If the punishment is trivial, it’s still the better option than continually wiping with a bad group. If the punishment isn’t trivial, then it’s going to cause serious collateral damage to people it shouldn’t affect. They had this penalty in GW1 PvP, to discourage syncing. All it did was make syncers get better at doing it right on the first try, and every normal player who got put into an obviously bad match was forced to either play it out, unanimously resign, or take the wait penalty. Didn’t really help make the matches any better. If such a system was implemented in GW2, it would just make LFG more elitist and less open. Gear/achievement inspection would start to become a requirement no matter what instance you were running. It’s a basic fact that parties dislike wipes and if you add a penalty for doing it then many decent players will just stop playing with strangers, and it will become that much harder for pugs to accomplish anything.

So what do soloists do?

I think the idea of solo content in a massively multiplayer online game is ridiculous. I am 100% in favor of group content, or even forced grouping to progress as it builds upon the community that is necessary for an MMO. Solo content creates an every man for himself attitude that does not belong in a game like this.

> party size 1
> ridiculous in an MMO
> party size 5
> massively multiplayer

MMO gameplay is world bosses and WvW, neither of which require joining a party. If I want to run around with a few friends I have D3 and L4D. Please keep your 5-player co-op game out of my MMO, thanks.

If you decouple RMT and gold everyone is going to use a cheaper cash buyout option instead. All that gold is then concentrated onto what’s left and you end up with in-game hyperinflation. That you are selling “only cosmetic” items isn’t the issue (since cosmetic items tend to be the most valuable items), the fact that you are taking away a huge gold sink is the issue. Decoupling currencies is what destroyed D3’s gold economy. It is exactly the wrong way to implement RMT.

Is the game really as expected?

Leablo.2651

The first point is that GW2 is doing a lot better on this point then gw1 and any other mmo around. So it might be not as revolutionary as you might have hoped, but it is revolutionary.

I don’t see any real difference between GW2 and other games’ dynamic events. It’s also arguable as to whether dynamic events are actually better than traditional quest systems. In GW1 you built up HQs that were permanently affected by your progress and gameplay choices, not possible if your choices are limited by others helping or not helping against your will. It’s opinion in either case, but you are stating it as fact and using unsubstantiated cliches like “revolutionary” as though they mean something.

Second of all, in almost every map there are chains of events that do what you are saying/asking. Maybe not all events, and maybe not with the rewards you would hope but still.

And in each case, the event chain restarts regardless of what you did last time, and in those big group event chains it’s often the case that success or failure depends entirely on how many people happen to be there when it starts. This is not gameplay, it’s just statistics. The only reason Balthazar is “exclusive” is that most people don’t think it’s worth grinding through it with a group just to get exotics with the same skin as other temple vendors. Strange word choice there, I think “undesirable” is more accurate.

As with every other company …

The money goes to NCSoft, who first pays employees first, then investors, then GW2, Lineage, Wildstar etc etc. GW2 is a successful money maker, I expect a lot of future investments to keep it at a good moneymaking level.

It’s a good thing you’re an insider at NC and every other company to tell us exactly how they distribute their funds to product development. Oh wait….

That said, isn’t this a stupid question. If I sell something to a customer, who gets the money? Me or my boss? Ain’t such things self explanatory?

Depends entirely on who you are and who your boss is and the nature of the roles you have at the company. So no, it’s not a stupid question but yours is a pretty stupid analogy since employees and wholly owned subsidiaries are not at all equivalent relations.

Watching the race closely shows that the 20% chance happens on the first half of the race, but towards the end, there’s a trigger that sends certain moa into overdrive and wins the race.

Not sure what you are trying to claim here. If you are saying that the race favors a certain moa, then please be more specific. Otherwise, the fact that a “winner” is chosen by being given a speed boost doesn’t change the odds of winning, i.e. receiving the speed boost.

Reasons for canach/null confusion

Leablo.2651

I wasn’t talking about traps in that line. Which is why I had a separate line specifically for traps. The line about red and green was in reference to NPCs, but it’s still a universal truth of the mechanic. Red means enemy, green means allie. It’s not difficult, and anyone running around in Southsun should be well aware of it.

I wasn’t talking about traps either. It’s true of everything. If it’s dangerous to you it shows up as a red circle. If it’s going to help you it’s a white circle. Green usually means friendly, but not all friendlies actually help you. Things that are friendly to you aren’t necessarily dangerous to your enemies. That’s the logical leap you’re making that isn’t enforced by the game.

All you had to do was use your eyes and your brain, and actually listen to provided NPCs. I talked to Keil, she said specifically that Canach was too strong to actually hurt, but that I might be able to use his traps against him. I then used the device on the first trap I saw because I didn’t want to blow up and wouldn’t you know it, it didn’t disappear, it turned green. I then kept using the device until I got to Canach. I tried to hurt him, and wouldn’t you know she was right I couldn’t hurt him, so I dragged him toward a mine I’d flipped and again wouldn’t you know she was right, it hurt him.

Did you also notice that if you use the wrong button, it makes the mine explode? Logically, that should have hurt him too. That’s what I was trying to do at first, pull him into an ARMED mine, and then make the ARMED mine blow up by tampering with it. Not pull him into a DISARMED mine to make it blow up, which by definition of DISARMED it should never do so. As stated before, it seems our primary disadvantage is that some of us understand English and were not prepared for the novel interpretation required to interpret the tooltips correctly. Now if our good Lionguard had said, lure Canach into a disarmed mine because it’s actually still armed, then we’d be getting somewhere.

Things that are green are safe to you and your allies, but hurt anyone else.

Friendly effects are white circles. I can’t really think of much else in the game where green is symbolic of not just friendliness, but exclusive friendliness to you while being dangerous to enemies. Can you name what you’re thinking of? Green is also the color of hostile mobs that are lower level than you. So at any rate it’s not consistent.

The only reason this wouldn’t be confusing is if you happen to share the same school of thought as the designer, or you read other sources before actually trying to figure things out for yourself. I gave it a couple tries and then looked it up on the wiki because kitten it. Of course the mechanic is actually simple enough (and the whole instance is easy IMO) once you understand what has to be done, but the instructions given by the game did not help with getting there. This felt a lot like playing a console game that was badly translated from Japanese, but this isn’t SAB so I don’t get the joke.

Is Taidha Covington event bugged?

in Dynamic Events

Posted by: Leablo.2651

Leablo.2651

There doesn’t seem to be much understanding of how this event chain works. People have their own guesses but no real consensus. Furthermore the progression of events often seems out of sync or just illogical – what are believed to be pre-events are level 50, which then progress to 49, then to 50 again. NPCs seem to be placed strangely, like Lionscout Jenny who is a merchant who stays inside the camp and talks about Taidha being killed even as the pirates have fully repopulated (she’s usually dead when you find her).

Can we get word one way or the other whether this event chain is working as intended? It definitely seems to me like there are some missed triggers that cause it to get stuck or fall out of sync easily. The only time I have seen this event fire is after a patch so now I’m wondering whether this is a bug.

Scope of IDs: definition or instance?

It wasn’t clear from the documentation whether new IDs are generated each time an event runs (identifying a unique instance of every event), or whether the same ID is applied to each instance of the same event, or something in between.

Intuitively I had thought the ID was part of the event definition but unless I’ve been doing it wrong this seems not to be the case.

EDIT: Having a browse through the forums it looks like my problem could be the “missing events” issue reported by others. I would still like confirmation one way or the other. Basically I am seeing a lot of “new” event IDs turn up every few minutes.

That’s why you bring newbies to events. Without ‘em, it’s like visiting Disneyland without kids. I do agree on the gaming aspect of open pve events (easy and dull), but you can’t deny their visual impact. GW2 has some of the best art around.

What they need to do is restore daily chest for lowbies. Put a minimum level per boss to prevent alt farming in higher zones and cap reward level per boss. You want fewer 80s farming low level bosses and more low levels to make the fight interesting and rewarding for them. Of course Anet does it completely backwards, giving no reward to people leveling in the zone and encouraging 80s to faceroll. It would suck to be leveling now and seeing this stuff for the first time, the scale of these events is utterly ruined.

Real life buyers aren’t mindless drones that cart the cheapest product every other factor disregarded.

If we’re talking about 100% identical items, you would have to be mindless not to buy the cheapest offer, for whichever definition of “cheapest” that you use. The only difference between the game and reality is that the lowest purchase price you see on TP is always the bottom-line cheapest. The real world makes you calculate other stuff to find the bottom line. Which in no way implies that this is how things should be if given a choice.

There are multiple other factors that influence their decision, like cost of shipping, rating of the seller, availability, warranty/terms of use, sheer indifference to the prospect of saving one penny and yes, lack of information (because in real life we don’t have a single button that lets you buy the cheapest identical copy of your requested product in the entirety of the world).

None of that exists in GW2. Equating them is a classic example of faulty logic.

And yet you’re advocating for GW2 markets to be more like the real world by introducing inefficiencies to slow down competition.

Leablo.2651

Using that info from Spidy the 15% double tax can be detailed more closely.

Assume there is a uniform internal conversion rate of x gold per 100 gems. Anet treats gem trades internally as TP transactions.

In the case of buying this means you have to cover the compounded cost of the gems and the added tax. So you don’t pay 1.15x, but x/0.85 ~ 1.176×. This is how any seller would calculate the list price when targeting a receipt of x. The twist is that, as the buyer, you pay the tax for the seller (Anet).

When you sell 100 gems, you lose 15% as normal to sales tax, so Anet takes x out of their coffers, of which you get 0.85×. This is the amount provided in the quote.

As a sell:buy ratio, the expected value is 0.85x/(x/0.85) = 72.25% which is the observed value from Spidy.

edit: clarified inclusion of tax in quoted prices

A Title With Little Honor

Leablo.2651

Why do you think that the Mad Clock Tower got and Crab Toss gets so many complaints.

I’m glad someone made this comparison. The reason in both cases is that they are poorly designed. The primary challenge of clocktower was not in the timed jumping requirement as it was supposed to be, it was in surviving the first few jumps where you were blinded by the crowd. One of the reasons that Wintersday JP worked better was because of the split start where 90% of the bad jumpers eliminated themselves before they could interfere at the “hard” part. From what I saw in clock tower, the large majority of people did not even get to the part where they were under real time pressure. Time pressure at the beginning only served to force people to blindly follow the crowd and when someone made a bad jump, triggering others to do the same, instantly 90% of the players would just fall out. Likewise, 90% of a crab toss win is directly attributable to whether the guys chasing the leader are doing more to impede each other than to stop him. These are PvP modes where, in practice, the core gameplay mechanic is griefing (whether intentional or not). Most people aren’t masochists, and a minigame has to be good first in order for it to be worth learning. Crab toss and clock tower are not good minigames, which is why people would rather quit and complain than to spend the time to get good at them. This would be a logical result. Consider that the only reason most people even play keg brawl is for achievements. Now make the achievements that much harder and less fun to get, and you have crab toss and the resulting fallout.

Sure, there are always people who want free achievements, but that isn’t what causes these two minigames to get overwhelmingly negative responses. Look at the design. The answers are there.

And really, dat targeting UI. In 2013.

Watching the official consortium video I couldn’t help but hear what could be a tongue in cheek criticism of either themselves, their bosses, or a certain publishing overlord. Quotations follow.

The Consortium is neither good nor evil. The Consortium is capitalist; the consortium is concerned primarily with its bottom line.

We see the Consortium’s products, we see the Consortium’s employees. We don’t see the Consortium’s decision-makers.

But what we do see is the Consortium trying to sell people happy feel-good products that make them money and build up the Consortium’s brand name […] that’s why they’re so determined to make a big splash on Southsun Cove: to get the PR, to get the public’s goodwill, to make people associate them with the kind of happy products that make you want to spend money.

Somewhere there’s a Consortium headquarters office with lots of Consortium bigwigs in it, and they look at these reports and they say “Why aren’t we getting better results on our Southsun Cove project?” Without ever having set foot there, without ever having to fight off a pack of angry karka. [players?]

Well in any case that’s how I choose to interpret the video because it’s funnier that way.

We had a lot of fun doing it, though. So to say there’s no new permanent content is misleading.

It is content not everyone is taking advantage of.

It is content designed so that not everyone can take advantage of it. In fact you pretty much have to be in a large guild just to afford the costs of starting it. That’s another problem with Anet’s content design, not the players.

She was indeed level 10, I will verify that. I was a thief btw, level 13, with 13 blues.

I tried D/D melee – she would throw poison in my face, if I stealth she would still track me with poison darts, trying to trap her was too much effort because she’s ranged, and her pathing is kind of funny in a way that makes her step around the trap. And she has a tendency to either put her back against a wall or just deaggro when I stealth, leaving me with no backstab.

I tried P/P range – she clearly has the edge on the damage race. Also is it just me or does her dart volley have perfect accuracy at range? Unlike engi’s.

The way I eventually got through this was by restarting the instance and pulling myself and Quinn out of the bar so that he could heal between waves. This way he was alive when Doc Howler spawned. He tanked her while I attacked at range and that was enough to close the damage gap. Also, even though she was aggroed on Quinn she would turn to face me every time she used her dart volley. This at least made it easy to tell when to dodge.
