What server for solo/small group roaming?

I’ve got slightly different problem, which sums up we – roamers, have bigger problem than we thought.
I was in same situation as you were (SFR, then GH, now Vabbi for ~7 months already) and now nearly all the time we’re fighting UW and WSR.
Even here there are not many roamers. There are few “roaming” guild, but not looking for even fights and zerging whenever that possibility appears.
Neither of 3 servers have many roamers. It’s the “strength in numbers” attitude even here – in bottom.
The only difference is that – due lower numbers, you can see some impact of your actions, kill some little pug group all by yourself and not be afraid of stumbling on 40 man zerg guild.
I was considering either joining on of those two servers to have new enemies – from my current server, as stepping stone or likely – moving “up tier”, but apaprently that’s not a possibility anymore. I asked about my old server – GH and all I heard it does nothing else than zerging. Even servers like RoF have the same problem as I heard – constantly same enemies and nothing but zerging.

Just to bring little obiectivism for you, guys: Bottom tier servers can offer what you’re looking for a little more, than your current servers can. but sadly just for a while. It just gets boring when attitute is everywhere the same and so are enemies.
And to expand it at the end: No, the “skill level” of average indivudual is everywhere the same. The difference is that in higher tiers there are more zerg guilds.

Grenades with the option to have autoattack and autotarget on skill 1 if the player chooses to go that way, or with the option to continue using them as they are now if the player chooses to go that way instead:

Cons:
-would require ArenaNet to program this.

Pros:
- Makes grenades more user-friendly in situations where leading shots is not important.
- Gives players with less experience in the kit than those who like to label everyone else as being noobs or lazy more mental space to use the other grenades tactically rather than just concentrating on spamming the controls to keep the grenades being chucked out at maximum pace.
- Reduces the risk of repetitive-strain injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome.
- Includes every pro Lert might have had in mind, because autoattack and autotarget can be turned off to revert to current behaviour.

Oh, that’s how you roll….

Write on cons:
Increased risk to die from boredom.
Increased risk of wrist-obesity from lack of movements.

What’s been said is that there is no possibility to turn off autoattack on one weapon/kit. So even if granades were autoattack there would be no way to turn that off only on them. Rifle/pistol/other kits would still be turned off. I like the way it is – autoattack everything, but granades and many seem to agree with me.

I don’t want to argue in here. If it had both options: autoattack&autotarget and the way it is now, I wouldn’t mind it at all. What you expect would punish good players who got used to it and bring unreasonable reward to those that refused to learn how to actually use that kit. What it offers now is pretty fair: Cap might be higher (in comparsion to other kits), but it’s pretty achievable for everyone with 2 hands and a little of will to learn how to use it.

They are – internally, compared to other kits – OP. They’re just so awkward to use that many people are willing to give up on a bit of power in order to actually be having fun when they play.

(Not to say that grenades can’t be fun, but different people find their fun in different ways. I find grenades and bombs both to be boring myself, but their effectiveness cannot be denied.)

That said, you’ll note the internal distinction there. Grenades aren’t that powerful compared to what other professions have, the problem is that most of the engineer’s alternatives don’t measure up. It might turn out that the answer is not to nerf grenades but to buff other things – which ArenaNet is already discussing doing.

I still think being able to throw grenades by the handful, with reasonable accuracy, further than a rifle can shoot is silly, though.

I agree (assuming granades are stronger) that buffing other kits instead of nerfing leading one would be the answer.
What people don’t realize is that bombs increase survivability (immobilize, blind and stealth, no need to waste that many trait points, ability to throw bombs on your feet while running away, possibility of traiting them to heal you) and granades don’t. Else it’s PvE with ideology “the faster you kill enemy, the less damage he will deal to you”.
It really would be unfair if eg. bombs were dealing exact same damage as granades while offering you crazyly big AoE, less aiming and more survivability.
For WvW my survivability is waaay higher with bombs than granades.

And don’t expect real life logic in games. We’ve got burn underwater and…. well, everything has it’s own logic I guess…

I’d like to point out there is a thread where people claim granades are too hard to use and that’s the reason why they don’t use them.
I’m sure nerfs will help bring more players into granades.
If it was actually OP in comparsion to other kits then people would actually bother learning how to use it.

But well, seems reason is not welcome in this type of threads.

I found a flaw in your way of thinking:
To make granades viable, you’re forced to put 6 trait points for them and basically all 3 choices in that single tree are granade-related.
Now to make Sharpshooter trigger, your critical chance must be pretty high (so either power build with high crits on condi rabid).
Sharpshooter isn’t strong itself, cause it doesn’t affect any build – and that’s what you complain on with traited granades – that it as well doesn’t affect any build.

Granades make it up with bleed and vul stacks, while eg. bombs can maintain perma burn and higher damage.

I don’t want to start that these kind of changes shouldn’t be ballanced over PvE. Flamethrower will never be anywhere near as viable for WvW as bombs or granades are. That being said, it’s no reason to nerf both of them.
Likely granades for small scale wouldn’t be as viable without traits (and builds with high crit chance) written above as they are now.

Edit: On a side note, why whole hordes are complaining about granades. Was there anywhere topic in some forum saying to constantly complain about them to make them AA/AT faceroll for noobies and nerf for WvW just to make beloved FT more viable in 2 months?

Grenade AA? Not gonna happen – it would just be silly and also be a nerf.

Cuz you know, it’s not like there isn’t a way to turn off autoattacks /sarcasm. All they’d have to do is make the skill programmed so that when autoattacking is off, the ground targetting is re-enabled. Unfortunately, that would require someone experienced with the coding to fix up, someone I bet is long gone (why else is it taking them so long to change ranger sword behavior, all their tweaks have been solely to numbers, and when they DO try to fix broken skill behaviors, nothing happens *cough*mesmeriwardens*cough*).

Cuz you know, it’s not like there isn’t a way to use other weapon/kit with autoattacks /sarcasm.

In my opinion Rifle#1 and #5 should be buffed. #1 with increased damage of 20% or so, and 5 either with longer leap range or CC condition (such as cripple or chill for second or two) at the beginning of animation.

For PvE it will never be competitive with granade/bomb kit and for WvW it could use a buff.

no autotarget on #1 nades, no improvement to bombs/explosives/mines/rocket, no fix for electricity, no fix for hobosacks guess they want an exodus when new games come out.

That’s like complaining just to complain.

Many people don’t want autotarget on nades as it would punish already good players and reward bad ones. As well as someone pointed out – if you mind aiming and clicking that one button, then you probably will mind all other – so engi isn’t best choice for you if you refuse to play its mechanics. Bombs are just fine.
The only thing you wrote above that needs “fix” is hobosack.

Yeah its sad like when I created an engineer almost 2 years ago I expected them to be excellent at sieging and long range large scale combat. It was a bit misleading.

I’d say that granades do the job for long range.
As well it’s not like engineers are impossible for front-liners. They are just not guardians and warrior in that role. But pretty much same as other proffessions.

Situational Tricks

1. Hide behind corner/wall/whatever to pull all mobs. Now granades and bombs hit all of them instead of 1-2.
2. Um, outside spawn? Stacking on players is the easiest – eventually taking camp over, but that’s rather for WvW stacks, not neceserly sigils.
3. Probably DPS granadier back-line.
4. Always less than 9 seconds (because sigil of battle), mostly swapping as often as possible whenever the “good” skills are off CD.
5. It all depends on your build. Whether it’s direct damage, condi, bombs or nades. I like mesmer, warrior or guardian. Don’t fancy ranger, necro, 2nd engi or thief.
6.
a) Waste of time doing silly PvE things for your own. When I’m with nades and see cannon in area i roam around, i will destroy it. With bombs or condi nades I don’t bother changing gear “just to destroy sieges”.
I take towers for my own with w/e build I’m currently using. SM and Keep – always changing to granades. How – well, when enemy server caps it I just hide inside hoping I won’t be spotted – works every second time
b) With whatever I’m using now. Nades – attacking from walls. Bombs – jumping down to drop few and back. Here just sometimes if it’s one ram and small group I actually might bother changing from bombs to nades if I feel like it will be more successful.
c)
d) Same as “b)” – with whatever I’m using right now.

XYZ – I have 3 sets, 3 builds crafted to suit my playstyle. Condi bombs, condi nades, direct damage nades. Nothing has been changed since the day I made them and nothing will as long the traits, items in the game are the same.

6. I switch whenever I feel like playing a little different or feel it will bring me more success when roaming (or to complement empty spaces for duo to get most out of it).
Making “builds to change it to different build” is waste of the current build you’re running. For me, it’s only moving 2 trait points to other tree no matter what and change one trait in other tree. Gear must be always changed and food remains the same only with condi build.

7. I have 3, of which two are rabid (different runes) and one knight. Zerker engi isn’t the best idea so the zerker gear goes away. Dire isn’t as good as many might think either. I’d say rabid is must for condi builds, knight/calestial for direct damage. That’s really enough.
8. I’m not PvE player (when I’m not forced to due lack of cash) so everything on every char I practiced was either s/tPvP and most importantly (like 99%) – WvW. And to answer second question – just think, that’s all it takes. Else you’re “mentally blind”, sooner or later you will start doing better.
9. Well, in comparsion to other engineers “i’m tanky as f**k”. I know what to use, when to use, can down players while I’m the one caring about my life running away. Outnumbered roaming is undoubtly my strength. As well can survive zerg attack and i’m doing best out of engineers mobility.
I’m not really afraid of conditions, but surely condi necros are pain. Can’t claim I don’t have any weakness, but nothing I could think of or consider something as one. There are situations where you just can’t do anything else.
Not sure whether or not I should consider it as weakness, but if I see group between 3-10 I for sure will give it a try for my own. Even when I know I won’t “win”, kiting, tanking, escaping and hopefully downing/killing some is what I consider as fun. Which of course often leads me to certain death, but oh well…
10. Might be laughable, but- don’t listen to other engineers on forum here. Sometimes some nice tips for noobies might be dropped, but most of things people are saying here are complete rubbish. Same goes for builds – nearly every time i facepalm reading topic about “great build”, OP saying “how great it is and how great he does with is” and I can’t stop thinking “yeah, I’d take you down within seconds”.
New players rather to use builds “made for their playstyle” which are mostly pretty bad and then they are surprised they aren’t doing well blaming it only on their skill and believing the build is flawless.

I’d suggest to use calestial mixed with knight items . With full calestial – armor is pretty low, so is crit chance (and the second one is pretty important so on average 2/3 granades crit, instead of one like with calestial).

Wow, that’s horrible advice.
“Average” build has 4 condition cleanses in 20seconds – that will do.
Transmute trait covers one.
Healing turret covers two and here’s the important part – if you see yourself having eg. 5 stacks of torment (from warrior/mesmer)/few stacks of confusion/ burning or dozen stacks of bleeding from condi proffession, yet still nearly full health, the best way to deal with them is just use heal to get rid off of two of them. Might be little “waste” of heal, since it can recover eg. only 3k health out of ~6k, but it will prevent you from wasting 10k or more suffering from these conditions.
Last is EG#5 – cleanses one condition tho description doesn’t show it.

Along with all that it’s important to have healing parts in your build. Regen, backpack regenerator and staying on EG#5 field (even excluding heal on impact) is already 500hp/sec.

Last thing (cleansing and regen being primary) is to know when to fall back a little. If your enemy seems to be full and your health is around 50% + you’re sufferring from conditions and got skills on CD, then it might be good to leap back for few seconds.

First you should tell us about your playstyle. Leave some basics like if it’s for WvW or PvE. You want some condis or rather direct damage, which weapons etc. etc.

All sources of might stacks up to 25. But for direct damage (both in WvW and PvE) it’s pretty bad. So far one of the best ones is Rune of Strength, but pretty expensive – around 100g/set.
And yes, then you would get 6 stacks of might per healing skill use, tho the one from traits would last longer.

In my opinion – in comparsion to ele, there’s no constant order. There are few combos that are important to use specific skill, but most of the time you’ve got to decide what to use and when to use it according to situation.
With Zerg and granades, probably your best shot is to staying on this kit most of the time since your job then is to do the damage and granades best contribute to it.
Furmigate would be good when you see fleeing allies or allies aroud without the need going for few seconds just to cleanse conditions off them and then another again go back to be in pop-corn-granade-position.
Using EG#4 is good when you see enemies heading in your direction. TL #4 is great when enemies are already near.

With bombs (for WvW) remember to play tankier – 2800-3000 armor should do it. Have speedy kits and invigorating vigor for more dodges.

Once again: This is not a dungeon speed run – there is no rotation. Everything changes depending on situation and your job is to shape for it.

if you cant afford strength runes get hoelbrak runes, cant afford them? get alturism, dont have celestiel available? just go full soldiers with knights runes, it works alot better then it should with full soldiers which is odd but when you hit a 8k nade barrage with no crits you realize it has some secret hidden power, its good for someone new to wvw since its easy to use and rather forgiving, but dosent have fantastic mobility so remember that if you use it.

I get focused all the time and as previous commenter says – people think “it’s free kill” which is totally wrong. Surely bad engi is (as every other bad proffession/player). With support from team (eg. boons from guard, damage from warrior) it’s one of better things to be focused so my bombs trigger damaging foes.
Probably the theme stays the same – go for ranger. Other classes might have something allowing them to escape – a get away card such as stealth.
There is no pattern. If enemies feel you’re the weakest, they surely will go for you, but when they die most of the time during that, it’s their problem.

I’d agree with Maskaganda about 2 guardians and one warrior, but disagree that engi doesn’t have place in such setup. Cleric ele fits, mesmer as well, another warrior or engi – all of them fit to fill 2 places left.

The thing with engineer mobility is going for it as goal is kind of waste, cause something other would offer much much more. Eg. thief or warrior are mobile by itself (it’s enough they have one special weapon for that or utility) while engineer has to spec for it.

Elixir infused bombs kind of build has place only in zerg so I guess you’re interested in it.
Notice that bombs have rather bad scaling with healing power and pretty high with power.
Focus maybe on knight/calestial type of build? That way you will have over 3k armor, you will crit often (45-55% crit chance) and for pretty high and your bombs will heal for pretty much the same. I wouldn’t say Vabbi tends to roam – our server just doesn’t have enough people (mostly). But the tendency stays for most – to gather up and run as one zerg once it is possible.
For you vabbi might be a good shot, there’s pretty much always some outnumbered fight.

I enjoy Balthazar for bombs (bombs, tool, elixir) and Scavenging for nades (nades, tool, elixir).
I suppose Aristocracy runes would do better work than undead.

Man, how do you expect to have “serious” discussion if you’re not treating other point of view seriously? How can you expect to be treated so?
I will be one of those guys and say it loud – this build isn’t strong. You pretty much confirmed it by saying you don’t want any other opinions that these agreeing with you.
Using Acidic Coating instead of Backpack regenerator is just pure waste.
And about what capping point did you talk about with your <2000 armor?
