Rangers are underpowered - thoughts?

In my opinion rangers are lacking of few things. Mainly boons, comparing to any other classes we get close to none, and 1-3 stacks of might for 10sec isn’t even close to perma 15 like other classes.
Condition rangers might be lacking of some additional condition, I’d love to see rangers with confussion from their normal 1-5 slots. Tho, I’m not condi ranger myself.
With my build I’d do incredibly much more even with the lowest (but still) regen I could apply myself.
Another thing I’d like to see is maybe shorted cooldown for RaO downed to 90-100seconds.

It’s not like rangers are really really so weak, it depends on player. But comparing to other classes we’re lacking of many things and to be honest we aren’t really the best at something (like supporting allies by boons/healing them, disturbing zergs to let allies run away, our mobility isn’t even close to top ones in game – like d/d ele, mesmer, thief, even warrior, and our burst even with fll burst build is matter to laugh about).

Best sigils for trap ranger

Sorry, I didn’t give you direct answer about sigils. Sometimes I tend to make off topics out of nowhere.
If you got additonal 3-4 gold (not counting cash for sigils), buy additonal weapon to make it double of same kind. What i mean, that I’ve got sigil of bloodlust on sword, and when I get enough stacks (mostly 10-15) i switch it with other sword with different sigil (leeching). These stacks will stay.

Well, tbh I don’t really know what advice should I give to you. It’s rather strange and not really strong build.
Sigil of battle is always good as long you switch weapons pretty often. As far as I know, it’s kinda bugged in bersekers weapons, and effect of this sigil had 30-45sec cooldown instead of 10.
If you want some survivality, sigil of blood is either an option.
With good precision you can go even for ’’bursty’’ sigils like Sigil of fire.

Personally I’ve got sigil of battle in off-hand warhorn. Sigil of bloodlust and sigil of leeching on swords. Sigil of blood on GS and sigil of strenght on SB (I always use SB, sometimes I switch between GS and duals), but sigil of strenght ain’t really that good one.

Tbh either elementalist or guardian are the best healers.
Both, going for mainly healing power (1200+) aren’t wasted classes. They can still do pretty much. Both can apply regen to allies, ele can apply soothing mist for 9sec and guardian that F2 or F3 thing which are other kind of regen. And more to it, both got other sources to heal allies. Guardian has his ulti and dodging heals allies. Elementalist got healing skills on 1-5 sets and additionally from traits. With around 600 healing power, just by dodging and in same time attuning to water and right away using D/D 5th skill with 30water/30arcane traits, you can recover to you and nearby allies 6k health in basicly 2seconds.
So in my opinion, as many others’, both guardian and elementalist are rather best supportive classes. Warrior isn’t even close to that.
PS: Both can cure conditions and apply boons, as well tank and disturb enemies allowing allies to run away by that time.

Sigils on a sb?

I’ve got sigil of strenght on my SB with toughness/ criticals build. Tbh, it’s kinda 4 gold wasted. I’m really disappointed. Mostly, best you can do is to keep 1, maybe 2 stacks of might. Ofc it happens to be 3 or 4, but not that often (even with my often fury and 81-83% critical chance under it). Soon I’ll change it for force or fire. They will do better.
The thing why I went for sigil of strenght was that my conditions are rather poor – 57, and I run 2 traps spec, so I was expecting some bigger boost.

Ofc I don’t pro-claim myself, but it’s pretty much like running bunker d/d ele without points in arcane and water. But in this case you ’’lose’’ 10 points and get much more instead.

Believe me, theory is one, practice is something other. I run 0-30-30-5-5 build focusing on armor and critical chance and still use fire and spike trap. Spike trap is really good. You get a chance to AoE immoblizing foes for 1 or 2 seconds.

Yeh, you can easly use sigil of battle in one and other sigil on 2nd. This doesn’t work with things like: dual sigil of battle in one weapons set or sigil of bloodlust along with sigil of corruption.

I agree that’s it’s basicly ’’must’’. You can dodge pretty often cause of it and along with vigor – all day long. And you get 2s of quickness every 19sec as long your pet is alive. Great for burst, switching pets and then F2 skill which shouldn’t fail due to quickness and you can finish enemies before they knock you down.

Berserker’s gear is a total waste. Just go for traited criticals and additional any trinkets (I’d suggest soldier or knight) with berserkers jewel.
That was you can hit nice critical chance (depending on soldiers/knight gear) it will be 40-60% and critical damage – around 60. Still having 2600-3000 toughness and over 16k health.

The thing I mean about condi mesmer (or bursty one, still with confussion) and engi is that they can apply over 10stacks of confu basicly in no time or perma keep 3-5. With 10stacks best thing you can do is not to attack and wait till it’s gone. That’s why Empathic Bond is kinda ’’GG’’, cause once a time it’s insta CC and you’re free to go.

I’ll stat of by reffering you answer to Prysin :P I do CoF myself, but it’s only for daily routine cash. 10-12min, and i get 40-70s. As ranger DON’T go for berserkers armor, it’s waste of stats (1 critical damage counted as 11-16stats). Personally I use berserkers weapons (which are waste of stats as well), but I just need that additional 9-10 critical damage mostly more than 130 toughness keeping in mind that my build has 63% critical chance and 2950 armor.
About pets: Sorry I don’t remember the exact names, but i’m not that kind of player who knows every skill, item name etc. etc.
So I use almost all the time dog and wolf. One immobilizes, 2nd fears. Both aren’t really bursty, but they can tank well (well, i mean that one lotto-attack won’t half-hp them) and both can knock down foe once every 40sec (?). So it’s really helpful for so called ‘’controll’ – one of few things ranger is better than others.
Sometimes I run with Moa or that rainbow wolf for boons. But first one is for Dungeons, 2nd for long, long versuses where I know that I got rather small chances to immobilize foe due to range (mesmer, maybe other ranger if vs was longer than 15-30sec, heh).

Partly off topic: I recorded today one action on my laptop to see how recording goes there and I might put it on YT. It’s rather meant to be for graphic test, but shows partly my build in action. Give me a call if you would like to see how does it look like.

Lately I wanted to get more out of ranger and now quite much spend time only on it for the last couple of weeks.
Glass Cannon is an option if you’re leveling on events, mobs. For farming it’s still good, but in many dungeons cannon ranger won’t work that well or high level zones like Orr.
For ’’everything’’ I use the same build. It’s pretty nice damage, from boons i can keep fury for quite long time (with Moa pet quite much perma) so shortbow damage is somewhere around 700-1100. As for WvW, it’s awesome. You’ve got good condition cure from traits, toughness, sword or greatsword gives nice mobilty (sword#2, greatsword#3) and blokcing/evades (sword#3, greatsword#4). Shortbow is good for everything and every build. But it’s pointless to write about shortbow, since we all can agree it’s mostly #1 option for ranger.
I’d never go for both bows for WvW. Once enemy is close, you can’t do that much. Personally I don’t like longbow at all (keeping it in bag tho, but use it like one minute/3days). Ah, both bows might only work at dungeons like CoF path1, where, with luck, you don’t have to tank much and DPS is the most important thing there.

I’ll just leave this here and remind you, that zerker ranger for WvW is not an option. Zerker thief, mesmer, maybe even warrior is, but zerker ranger is just too easy to kill and DMG (comparable to these mentioned classes) is way way lower. In other words, you won’t be able to survive as long as these classes and you won’t deal even close to their damage.

Ye, but warriors got other long-distance weapon – riftle, which is way better that ranger’s shortbow in DMG matter.
If you’re ranger, then shortbow is quite much ’’must’’ in 99% cases (builds).

Changing your trait build on level 80 cost merly 4silver. So for exp I’d rather go for power, criticals and for PvE roaming whatever gives you speed boost (25% signet, would put warhorn instead torch).
It’s not hard to stay alive on PvE and since you want to get level 80 quick, toughness and vita shouldn’t be the matter looked at.
About pets, which are helpful, you can always go for whatever has pretty nice attack or gives some decent boon (like moa – fury for 15sec every 30sec).
With signet of the wild, neither of you should have keeping health problem fighting one-two-three mobs at a time. If you would rather to pull mobs and let’s say, try to kill 5 at a time, traps are always a solution along with weapon which hits several targets (sword, greatsword).

PvE shouldn’t be the matter looked at. Personally I enjoy (well, maybe ’’rather’’, since i’m PvP player) doing PvE as ranger than other classes. But when it comes to WvW, it’s completelly different story.
On PvE you can do many evades which with your experience will rarely fail since mob’s power-shot animation takes already like 3 seconds and in addition you know where will the hit go.
I thought players and Devs agreed that ranger is considered as the weakest class. It’s not good as support, dps – meh meh, conditions? engi has like 3 times stronger than ranger could ever get, necro’s conditions are still far better. AoE skills – meh again. Basicly, ranger isn’t good at anything. It only has tad more evades than other proffessions without any mobility-fast way skills.
Yet, I don’t understand it’s still getting nerfed. Other classes get their bugs fixed and boost right away. And all we hear is that they will do something about rangers to improve them, but they don’t.

It’s pretty weak 1v1 build. Against condition damage profs, you can’t do much. With few stacks of confu on you, you’re pretty much dead. It’s as well weak against theives and mesmers. These traps (tho might seem pretty weak damage) are pretty powerful against thieves.
Two traps, knight set with zerker jewel on trinkets and 0-30-30-5-5 is still my favorite one and so far the best/strongest in many aspects.

That’s true. Ragner is lacking of: boons, odd conditions, conditions cure and pretty much mobility.
Wish we had once a time some confussion damage (even without condi build).
Mainly, I’m D/D ele, but i got back to ranger recently to take more out of this class. As ele, 11 stacks of might, is something I have without paying any attention to game. With every possible blast it can reach around 21 totally by my own. With boon-dunartion runes, people actually can perma keep it. Not to mention as ele, I can have pretty much perma swiftness, regeneration and pretty much vigor as well.

I’m surprised someone wondered about my (Archjac – D/D ele and Lertt THAT ranger) build. It’s 0-30-30-5-5, full knight set with berserkers jewel to trinkets. It was based of omnomberry ghost pre-nerf. With 83% critical chance and quickness 2s every 19sec it was much stronger than it is now. I’m not really proud of myself, but seems that’s the way fighting against such great Engi as Amadeus indeed is.
I’ll change it to keep at least 2 sets of weapons each. For vs sure sigil of leeching at sword and blood at sb would do better than whatever i had at versus. I will get there in time, but for ’’now’’ I just wanted to get more out of ranger (which is considered as weakest class) without losing 70g on gear (like runes of divinity and better sigils).

Amadeus, looking forward till our servers meet again and hopefully, for some ranger’s boost.

Well, that’s weird.
Lately I started to use cleric set on sPvP. Toughness around 2.6k, healing powe ~1300. Regen from soothing mist and regeneration is somewhere around 430/s. Signet gives tad over 330health each attack at this point. But hell, 5k from fire grab + condition at this time. It’s not something you can outheal without doing anything.

Basicly I can agree with everything Raptured says, and to nothing what you two are saying.
‘’Experienced player’’ in my kitten Claiming you can do the highest damage and (from what and how you’re writing) kill everyone on 1vs1.
Even with armor over 2.5k, full zerker mesmer (zerker mesmer makes sense) can do around 15k damage to you in 1-2 sec if all of his hits crit. So with your builds (~13k hp, 1.9k deff) he probably wouldn’t need to bother you with destorying illusions to make you down in 10sec.

I can’t agree with thing it’s worth uping your criticals all the way. For me, if critical is re-counted as more than 7stat points (beside traits) it’s not worth going for it. In other words, critical = only jewel, traits, orbs/runes.

@Dreztina, my build is about tank, not burst and be bursted. I’m running with 520-800 healing power, ~2.6k armor and boon durations.

I don’t see point of losing more stats than it can be on critical damage (5 instead of 11 or more).

@Razor: the hipotetical thief we are talking about would have either hell lotta of toughenss or healing power then. I’ve got basicly from all regenerations spam up to 500hp/s, + healing skills in water + normal heal. All thief has is food (maybe), one heal per 30sec and 300hp/s in stealth when traited.

I don’t want to make argument out of this tiny tiff.
There are attacker-kittens and people who actually rather to stay alive.
As Robert Hrouda said about dps and tank (partly out of contecst): Can’t do damage if you’re dead.

I know life and enemies. With low supporting stats it’s easy to die. And ele with high criticals is nowhere compared to warrior, mesmer or thief.

Most common is 0-10-0-30-30 cantrips build. With it you have basicly few boons on all the time (fury, some stacks of might + something else).
You’re more of a WvW player or enjoying PvE?
You can just go check that what you already have in action and see how it is going and what you’re lacking of.
It’s pretty enjoyable taking down players pretty fast, but you’re dropping down most likely even faster.

The only thing I don’t have experience with is dying.
Jewel = 18% critical damage.
+Traits and stuff it’s getting more.
Let’s say with ballanced build it’s not 1500 but around 1800 instead of your 2500. But with higher critical chance it’s getting hit for 1800 much often than your for 2500.
And you do not realize how huge difference is additional 600armor. Then it’s not 600dmg less, but much much more.

OP, think logically. You can either have 1% critical damage for cost of 5stat points, or waste 11-14stat points for critical damage being attacker-kitten.
For PvE it might work, since mobs doesn’t deal that much damage and dungeons aren’t really hard. But for WvW, it’s huge.

I’m not talking here about 0 critical damage. I’m talking here about ballance between chance and around 20-45 critical damage as for D/D ele. Going for 90+ critical damage and 50+ critical chance will lead you nowhere beside grave having 13k health and 1.9k armor.

You should rather pick knight instead of valkirie.
In my opinion: Critical chance > critical damage.
What I noticed is 95% players don’t know kitten about criticals. Let me lighten you: If your critical damage is at 0% and critical chance at 50%, it means every second hit will do 150% damage instead of 100% (non-critical). In other words, the basic critical damage (with critical damge 0%) is 150% of normal attack.

Since I’m rather WvW player in survivality it all matters. There is such huge gap between tank and cannon ele. As example I can drop thief against one: Tanky will most likely out-heal damage yet still dealing damage to thief. But thief will take down cannon ele in seconds.

For PvE/Exp it’s ofc better to boost your attacks since staying alive there and in most dungeons isn’t problem, but from experience on WvW and sPvP it’s huge difference.

ZERKER IS WASTE.
In armor and weapons 1% critical chance is counted as around 11-14stat points. Comparing to jewel, 1% critical chance = 5stat points.

No food at all. Normally I use mango pie along with sharpening stone.
It’s roaming semi-high tank build for duo-trio vs many.

With shortbow it will be still around 500dmg under critical damage at its finest to tanky guardian.
Plus the fact armor is around 2k = two, maybe three hits for thief.

Traps are kinda good, but they are lacking of something additional to it. Once i suggested condi removal each trap and tad higher basic damage to make it more bursty. 100-200 ain’t that much.
There’s one good survivality skill which evades you back, but it has 45s cooldown…
They need to work alot on rangers. Need to add something to make them stronger or tougher to kill.
Look at engi, he can confusion you every few sec and with good condi damage you’re basicly unable to attack for few seconds. Else it’s 2k damage to you or more.

The improvment I’d be looking for is rather imporving shortbow’s basic damage – crossfire, for around 20%.

I run with knight set on WvW. Jewellery as well knight, but with berserker jewel. Stats quite similar. Traits are 0-30-30-5-5. With omnomberry ghost and fury (around 80% critical chance) you get spammed with 330hp recovery. Knight WvW build is amazing.

Too many people overreact.
Cantrips 40% nerf – I can understand that. People without any boon duration and glyph as heal won’t have perma regen as they used to. But tbh, I’m fine with that.
With RTL I had one good non-waiting circle of combo mostly every 2nd time I switch every attunement. But It’s not that much, I will get used to it, so you, people, should.
And as they wrote: shocking aura was bugged. It doesn’t count as nerf.
