OMG you silly boy. Maguuma was kicking babies for an entire week and racked up 12k kills. The PPK is just smoke and mirrors made up to make fites guilds feel like they are important. 12k PPT can be made up in a few hours. Settle down, it’s really not that big of a deal.

The other servers have kills also so it’s not even 12k that need to be made up. Funny how people don’t realize how insignificant PPK is at this point.

PPK has little to no impact, and as population continues to decline, it means less and less. In T8 there are only 6000 deaths per week total amongst all three servers.

At the end of the day it isn’t about free or subscription. It is about a company that takes this format of play more serious or puts it in the forefront. Right now with HoT it isn’t the case nor has it been previously. Their focus right or wrong is:

1. Raid content
2. eSports

You got that wrong, their focus is:

1. Gem store
2. Grind to facilitate players buying gems

I have never understood why a sub has to be $15/month with no gemstore, or no sub with a focus on gem store. I haven’t played a sub game where the price was different from $15/month.

Why not $5/month with some kind of gemstore? The gemstore would need to be toned down somewhat of course, but the $5 sub would allow lots of new content; all the while paying the bills, with the gemstore being the profit.

They can offer the finishers, boosters, some outfits/armor sets, and the mining tools, plus a few other little QoL goodies through the gemstore. This really wouldn’t impact gameplay at all, and still be attractive to many/most players.

It’s really hard to have a gemstore and not slip into P2W. A lot of people know this and are suspicious of games with gemstores. Perhaps the CU devs are banking on these people as their customers?

Or maybe they’re out of touch with today’s MMO reality (I don’t think $15 subscriptions are viable any longer)?

Perhaps one of the reasons that Anet has not seemed to take WvW as seriously as they could is that it probably does not generate much revenue for them.

Here we go again. What makes you think it doesn’t generate much revenue? From what I’ve seen WvW players buy skins and outfits just as much as PvE players; they also buy finishers — which PvE players don’t. Not only that, WvW players get much fewer rewards than PvE players, which probably means more WvW players buy gems with cash. I wouldn’t be too surprised if WvW players generated more revenue per player than PvE.

Think about it, they have a team working on a major overhaul for over a year, that team comes up with Golem Bullkitten Week and now Deserted BL. If you have any glimmer of hope left in ANET that they will fix this you are beyond delusional.

That being said, this topic took a turn to more interesting discussions. Is there an MMO out there that has good WvW / RvR style of play and good action combat?

I have been looking at BlackDesertOnline, but sadly I got the region block thing as Pearl Abyss refused to license the rights for my country to Daum…. so that hope went out of the window….

Kinda iff about blade and soul cause although the combat is fun, the PvE is beyond bland and although there is the Faction thing for open world fights, it seems more on the duel format rather than massive fights like a WvW / RvR format.

So, any suggestions?

Not a suggestion, but Mechwarrior online? I never hear it mentioned as an alternative to GW2… anyone know if it’s just a shoot’em up or does it have skilled team play?

They should have increased the token awards. Thing is, Anet explicitly doesn’t want people to run dungeons anymore. They just didn’t have the balls to cut them entirely, so they gutted their rewards to encourage people to buy HoT drive people towards fractals.

My opinion is that they nerfed the gold to limit F2P people farming gold with great ease. After all you get a good team, you could dungeon farm and get more gold than what you can out of fractals because of the gold lock behind daily trash.

Fractals you have to work up your AR and reward levels. Dungeons, not so much.

That can’t be it because they could have done what they did to fractals: reduce the rewards dramatically for F2P players but not HoT players (by first reducing rewards for everyone, then giving them back via masteries). P2W FTW.

While the grass isn’t always greener GW2 and WvW needs competition. And that is one game to deliver it. 3 years so far and we don’t have much to show for it with regards to WvW

Honestly I think the big problem is they wanted to “fix” too many systems with HoT, like progression with masteries and the destruction of fractals. They’ve been working on all these features and that left not enough time for content. That’s why the xpac is so small. Anyway, raids coming out at a slow pace is to be expected. It’s not their priority.

No… it’s the other way around. They know they can’t create enough content in the time they have; so they create even less content in order to have the time to code the grinds (masteries, guild halls, etc.) which give the appearance of more content that there is.

As for raids. They’re Anet’s current “big thing”. Soon the next big thing will pop into their minds and raids will be forgotten. Just like how fractals are now what the dungeons were. (And raids are now what fractals were).

Except that they have a separate team working on raiding from everything else, so its not really slowing anything down, and unlike some things anet has done raids were very well received, even if less players try them.

It just boggles the mind that there are people who still think “this time they’ll get it right.” If someone at work constantly and consistently failed at his job, would your boss say, “he failed over and over and over again, never learning from his mistakes, but this time, he’ll get it right.”

If transfering were free, I’d bet there would only be about 6-9 servers. This game just screams “transfer!” if you’re in a tier below 2 and playing WvW. There’s crap all to do. It’s extremely boring to the point everyone is just gone pveing, or elsewhere. Even EotM is horrible; where if you’re one colour, your team has 10% (at best) playerbase of the other team(s). It shouldn’t cost more money/gold to get out of the boring server you’re currently on. I’d rather just pve or play another game entirely (favoring the later, as pve is also stagnant now).

Actually, a lot of people talk about not wanting to play the BL (for obvious reasons), but that EB is not an alternative because it’s too zergy. Those people might like the lower tiers (T4, T5) where EB population is significantly lower and thus far less zergy.

I was thinking Engineer more because I can set up defensive turrets or summon a mortar. But sadly I have a feeling the image in my head of how cool that will be is not aligned with the reality of the game.
So I guest I am looking for advice on how best to do a WvW only character and some pros and cons of the various classes. I tend to play more of a support role in rpgs so probably nothing front line.

Sadly I do not have the expansion yet so any of the new stuff is out.

Do not get the expansion. Especially if you’re only getting it for WvW. The game mode is pretty much dead and won’t last much longer. Plus, do you really want to support their new P2W model?

Also, you might want to try out some WvW before leveling up a new character. The fact that you think defensive turrets are helpful indicates your idea of WvW might not be aligned with how WvW is played.

If you want to know how other tiers are doing, you can go to wvwintel and add up the total number of deaths in each matchup. That gives some idea of activity.

For example, right now in your matchup (T6) there have been 18,000 deaths. T1, it’s 67,000. And in T8 it’s only 5000.

In any case, I’d like to see some videos nevertheless.

Does the site differentiate between deaths per border? The total doesn’t mean much if 90% is from EB.

It does not differentiate between border and EB, but when the total number of deaths is only 5000 (in T8, for example) on Thursday, you know something is terribly wrong.

And even in the higher tiers, I’m pretty sure the overall death numbers have dropped quite a lot since before HoT.

I believe they’ve seen and read this thread. There are more red posts than I’ve seen in quite a while (in this forum). I hope they take this thread to the table when they have their next “dev team” meeting.

But which threads are the devs posting in? The one about how arrow carts work. The one about the perennially bugged walls. The one about invisible tags. It’s just the threads of minor (to really minor) importance that they’re showing up in.

Where are they in the threads that discuss the total failure of the new BL? The threads about having to endlessly grind in PvE for upgrades (that we already had pre-HoT)? The threads about terrible balance? This thread?

Looks like they’re just here for a bit of lip service (though the fact that they realize some presence is necessary is already pretty amazing).

Requesting Feature: Private Commander Tag

We’ve avoided adding this feature because we don’t believe it would be healthy for WvW. While we can appreciate why some players would want a feature like this, lots of other players only engage in WvW when, upon entering a WvW map, immediately see a commander icon to follow. We try and avoid adding features that can be used to intentionally exclude other players.

Yet keeping the failed BL is healthy for WvW? Forcing WvW players to grind and grind and grind, just to get upgrades they already had before HoT is healthy for WvW? Introducing zero skill-required one-shot banners is healthy for WvW?

Not sure if you know this, but guilds raids have been excluding others already — for years — by running tagless and targetting the commander. Implementing something that makes their life easier isn’t going to change anything.

Chalk it up to another example of the devs having little to no idea how WvW is actually being played. Not that it matters much anymore considering the current decrepit state of WvW.

Failure to Communicate

Here’s the issue as a WvW only player I have 3 years of vague posts and hope to go on for everything that affects my beloved play type. After 3 years I’ve noticed a horrible trend of slim to no communication followed by something that most of the community doesn’t want or enjoy.

You forgot the part of the pattern where after the failure of their release, they take no actions and say no words about it.

Remember Golem Week? Basically the perfect example of how Anet handles WvW: from the failure to heed warnings by the community, to epically buggy implementation, to the warnings turning to truth, to the complete lack of action by Anet to deal with the problem, to the complete silence about the problems.

Can you really expect them to change their ways after three years of this? Fool me once, shame on you, fool me for three years, shame on me. Seriously.

It should not have been more than 4 months, should have been 3 months, or once per quarter. Unfortunately, anet is very slow with producing gaming content, so its not surprising.

I really hope they have more gameplay content sooner than 6 month time gaps.

Release 4 major updates within an year, a raid wing that had 9 bosses, 8 of which were unplayable because of pushed unfinished content, which made half the playerbase quit including the top raiding guild. Stability must be fixed

The problem with the stability discourse, as well as many other discussions regarding WvW lately, is that it is obscured by the misconceptions of stupid people. People who are completely unable to either look at the very simple mechanics behind the change and tally up the numbers or look into the context of how the stability change is the driving fault behind the “population imbalance” and general discouragement of content-enablers (like commanders, roamers, scouts etc). I have no better description for people who refuses to argue the points at hand or harp on about incontextual or peripheral issues.

There never was a “permastab” norm before the change. That is the misconception of stupid people who never understood how rips worked and simply wanted their spammable go-to buttons to be the end-all solution to some elitist guild, all-melee, permastab strawman. The changes to stability, making it part of a tit-for-tat cooldown trade, is in direct correlation to superiority of control effects, given how the game has more control effects on shorter cooldowns. It is an imbalance. That is the simple math.

By the same premise, it is in direct correlation to larger groups outperforming smaller groups [with fewer cooldowns to burn] (making transfering to higher populated servers more appealing) and pickup zone-blobs outperforming well-composed diverse groups (that tend to provide said pickup groups with commanders or other forms of leaders and content-enablers). They do not have sufficient counters to cover all the control or the uptime to match the reapplication of control effects. They simply run out of cooldowns.

That used to work well, with more control than counters but higher applied covers that had to be ripped from their players to impose control upon them. The current balance makes pinballing the norm and that is what makes range-to-range combat the norm. We had rips to boons, boons to conditions and conditions to cleanses rather than the breakbar-spam nonsense promoted in PvE now to create a simplistic version of that mechanical context. Tangent: Even in PvE it would probably had been more fun with bosses that corrupted boons to cleanse and reapply or stole boons to rip, steal or corrupt back.

All of this has created a transfer circus where players transfer to win, overpopulating already highly populated servers, followers transfering to find leaders, draining lower populated servers to the point where players have to transfer to even find players to fight and to participate in the basic premise of game mode – to have open world fights – and a dependence of more players upon fewer players, where old established commanders are expected to guide more, less experienced players. That is a terrible environment to command in, causing burn-out, limited tactics at one’s disposal and a general disinterest in the game mode, from the decreasing amount of players that an increasing amount of players depend upon. That’s the context.

Stability is at the heart of everything, from the personal enjoyment of getting to control your own character to the melee-range balance, finding fun friends to follow and exciting frenemies to fight. A game (mode) where restricted movement is the norm is simply garbage and completely counter-intuitively wasteful to the fantastic movement- and combat engine this game promises underneath the WvW scrapheap. That’s why many of us are so passionate about it too, because the WvW mode has so much potential in GW2. It stands to be the open-world market leader. The same can not be said for good stories, raids or esports, with cross-genre competition where our MMO is but a small contender.

I just want to say thank you for this post. I hope ANET reads this and takes it into consideration if they truly want people to keep playing their game.

Well the Stability changes came around the time Devon left, so they probably didn’t have 1 person left at Anet understanding the negative impact of that stability change for WvW. They ended up with PvP devs deciding of all the changes for the game, and WvW suffered greatly from it. How many skills, boons and traits, fine-tuned for PvP are now completely useless in WvW?

Just take Ice Bow for example, it was perfectly balanced for WvW, but they completly destroyed the skill just for PvE. It’s clear that for the PvP devs WvW is PvE and not a competitive mode.

Not sure why people have any positive memories of Devon. He was pretty reviled for his total lack of WvW knowledge when he was in charge .

The original WvW maps were co-developed with a pre-release batch of players designated to help improve and facilitate the design of WvW and its subsequent maps. Communication was extremely timely and developers were very involved in the feedback playtesters were giving to improve the experience. Many features were removed, changed, and added because of this, and lead up to what WvW was launched as.

I wonder where those devs are working now. Even if they can’t take 100% credit for the maps, the fact that they understood the concept of testing and collaboration means it might be worth checking out whatever games they’re working on now.

Do you know any names of these devs?

Well hold on a sec here folks.

Anything that has such a dramatic change in proposed dates means that something major got scrapped, pushing a release date a significant time into the future. Even mid-2016 is still six months development time. That’s not a short period of time. So they have to go back to barebones and revisit their initial push.

I’m hopeful for the first time in months.

It likely means they read this forum and read reactions to proposed changes and now are going back to rethink it.

We told you we wanted less pve in wvw, you gave us more.

We told you we wanted more incentive to defend, you gave us ridiculously expensive guild upgrades and tactics. That require us to grind pve…

Please anet explain to me why you think I should wait 6+ months for this big update when you wont even talk to us about it. WvW is kittening garbage right now I can’t even bring myself to log on. The combat system and my server community, were the last two things keeping me playing. The current meta with banners is trash. I wanted to test my guilds skills against other guilds not see who grinds carebear land harder. Hopefully I’ll see some of you in Crowfall or CU because its become apparent the WvW most of us were looking for wont be happening.

This. It’s not like they made just one bad decision. It’s been bad decision after bad decision after bad decision. They’re not going to suddenly start making good decisions. especially since they don’t even realize they’re making bad decisions.

Crowfall looks good, but to be honest, WvW is so dead it’s foolish to stick around just because there isn’t currently an alternative.

Don’t worry, they’re only one or two years behind: once they fix the issues from 2013 and 2014 maybe they’ll address the problems of today. When you see them making an announcement about how they will fix Golem Week, you know they’re getting close. Maybe 2018?

How can they work for OVER a year at the overhaul and still need so much time after HoT to finish it?! Cant they see WvW gamemode is slipping out of their hands?
My god… I dont understand Anets thoughtprocess at all. Are they really that understaffed?!

My guess is that when they saw the reaction to the new WvW maps that came with HoT it was back to the drawing board and whatever progress they made over the last year has at least partially been scrapped.

Nope, the new maps can be rescued.

You can solo Arah p2 in the 30 mins that you would be waiting for a party. It’s not too hard to learn. Hammer guardian will do it for you in roughly that time with very very simple rotations.

It’s your best shot at getting the tokens. That or PvP.

If it’s WvW you’re interested in, do not buy HoT. The game mode is in its death throes and Anet has given no tangible indication that they are going to act.

And even if they do act, do you really think they can bring it back from death? The same people who put it in the state it’s in now? Not a chance.

Don’t waste your money.

It’s very likely they remove servers from the game so you might be wasting your gems.

Their economist literally said it was to disincentive people from doing dungeons. In other words, they don’t want people doing dungeons as much.

More that they didn’t want people earning coin as easily and that they wanted to encourage people towards raids and fractals.

Nope. He literally said they wanted to disincentivise dungeons.

Scared, maybe. But more likely they have calculated that the manpower (money) needed to do so would not bring enough new income to justify doing it, especially after the epic failure of the DBL. Management has probably made a decision to let it bleed to death quietly (why else the silence?).

At this point, that would be the smart thing to do. It’s too late now. Nothing that they’re willing to do that can bring back the WvW population at this point.

And it should be obvious, even to them, that whatever grand plans they had for WvW are going to fail just as hard. So what else is there to do but pull the plug and hope that this whole episode doesn’t live too long in the annals of gaming infamy.
