Fresh air has always been a counter to necro specs too. With a decent fresh air spec you will get 100-0 ed by auto attacks from an ele. This game will be unplayable from a pvp perspective for at least 12 months after the expansion as the balance will be horrible due to no testing, and then it will take them 12 months to fix it as they only do minor changes every 4 months

And looking at some of the traits, Weaver will bring Fresh Air specs back with a vengeance.

Then no necro spec will be viable. Necro is really bad vs blinds and auto attack damage because of a slow attack rate (makes blinds OP vs necro) and no dodges/evades/blocks (makes auto attack OP vs necro)

No Stability, no Vigor, no Blinds, no blocks or other evades granted by the spec.

I don’t see how the Scourge is supposed to survive anything other than another Scourge.

Going to be funny to see how quickly the scourge dies to headshot spam and PI from thieves. Scourge wont cast a skill and will get 100-0ed in seconds.

Take away death shroud and necro is awful because it has none of those things listed.

Balance will be horrible at release as they do balance by two devs duelling on keep on forest.

I still see no survavibility in that elite specializzation.
Our class problem is not boon corrupt or manage conditions, we are “bad” because we’re too easy to kill. And that elite don’t grant us any kind of survavibility. More than that, that elite make us even easier to kill than before!
If we look to the total of the Fx+heal skills we obtain more or less 12k of barrier. Basicly If someone chose to kill us we have to spend a lot of LF and our heals only to die faster than before.
I’m a little sceptic about the use of that elite in serious high level sPvP…

There’s some really interesting skills and in PvE (or eventually WvW zerg) that elite will find a good spot in every team.

Shades seems interesting But…if you don’t active a Fx they do absolutly Nothing…and that make them barely useless…even if traited with dhuumfire…
The shades can be good only if you enter the Desert Shroud, granting to them and you to spam torment+Burn, otherways they’re Totally useless to inflict damage.
But there’s another problem about that for the sPvP: 180 radius.
You’re forced to play with a Pure Glass build and to inflict torment you need to stay near your enemy? Really?
That can be good if you can spam your shades all on the mid, active the DS and then run away, making that combo really OP. But there’s another thing that come to my mind: that shades…have they a HP bar? Can the enemy destroy them? If yes: too weak and useless. If no: insanely OP and soon hugely nerfed.

The other skills are good and grant different kind of support to the team. Boon corrupt, condition convert for allies, weak barriers, swiftenss and might.

More I look to that skills more I see that there’s a Huge spam of Cripple, Boon Corruption/Convertion and lesser survavibility than before, with a decent amount of damage but not so much more than what we can do with the actual Reaper Elite Specializzation (expecially for the Fx abilities).

The thing I see more than all is that we don’t obtain any real new role using that elite…
We obtain few really weak barriers and nothing more. We can clean conditions from allies instead of steal them to send back to the enemy with Plague signet, but that’s only a different way to do the same thing as before, we can grant 5 might every 16 seconds, but actually we can grant 10 might every 20 seconds if we want, we obtain boon corruption and cripple spam but we can do the same right now, only with different skills… Also looking to the amount of Cripple every skill inflict there’s a chance that ANet want to force us to use that cripple+swiftness from our skills to defend us, as they wanted to do with chill… a thing that never worked and never will work…

In a sPvP area I see this new elite with pessimism. No survavibility at all, no new role, no enhanced damage. The only good things I see are the elite (because spam Slow), the torch 5 that grant a knockdown (I found it in another post) and the trait that grant you all the boons that you remove/convert, really huge thing if you fight against a ele or a scrapper, but actually only Few classes rely on boons to kill someone, expecially a necromancer, and in PvE mobs don’t use boons…or at last they actuually don’t use boons. It can be really strong in WvW, where you can corrupt boons all the time long.

All the other things are really good but don’t grant us all that Support, all that damage or any kind of survavibility that I expected from a Support Elite Specializzation.

I hope to be too much pessimist or that elite will be Really Bad for sPvP and not so good for PvE.

No stability in the WP video either. If this class has no stability then it will get ping ponged around and then die

We’re getting 9 new specializations. How is that not new content for PvP? It’ll take a long time for everyone to figure out what’s what again and enjoy new metas.

It will take a week at most to work out the broken specs. Then pvp will suck for the next 3 months until anet finally nerf those things. Then pvp will be semi-bad due to the power creep.

We still haven’t figured out all the builds we could make with the HoT elite specs.

It thought it was impossible to make less than 1 PvP map for an expansion, but apparently it is possible. There goes my hopes for a true GvG mode and a competitive revolution…

Dude they released their last “competitive” (their definition) map in september 2012. They only just added new maps back to pvp after that in 2017. So they went 3 years with no new maps

Why do I always have to go against plats when I’m nowhere near plat? All I want to do is learn how to play PvP, but I can’t learn when my team is basically being spawncamped all and every game.

Because the game is so power creeped that everyone quit. When everyone quit you get less players in the matchmaking queue so the matchmaker has to make really bad games. This results in more people quitting. This is how games die and gw2 pvp is dead

I do believe that their actions are serious, and I appreciate anet’s transparency. However, a permanent ban from pvp for people who only pvp is basically a perma-ban entirely, which seems contrary to anet’s usual banning philosophy. From what I understand, perma bans are almost never given out-bans are usually a 1-2 year-thing.

I’m speaking not to defend the actions of these players, but to ask why anet has taken a somewhat different and aggressive stance here. I kindly ask Ben or another dev here to explain this decision further.

It is obvious. They spent ages making flagship automated tournaments and then in the very first one it was ruined by players. This hurts anets business. Hype for these ATs is now dead due to the actions of these players. It has killed ATs as players no longer have faith in them. It cheapens the winning of the tournaments. In short, this really hurt anet and the pvp community. Such an action deserves a long ban.

Anet will likely do more tournaments with cash prizes with the expansion as a publicity stunt. I presume these people will be banned for those. Hilarious and awesome. They spend thousands of hours playing a game nobody else plays to a reasonable level and then get themselves banned before a potential restart of anet prize money,

MASSIVE Balance changes.

This condi meta was developed due to:
1) added/removal of amulets, removal of RNG damage sigils, and the obvious additions to each class. (revenant, specializations). I could invest more time into this post going over each class/specialization, but i’m sure people already know what builds I am talking about.

2) Guild Wars 2 balance has shifted from Stats to Skills/traits. Yes I know, to get condi damage you have to be wearing a condi damage amulet, however think about the sustain that classes get, it’s not from stats anymore. Vitality and Toughness are shredded through by this condi meta. Toughness is pretty much ignored and Vitality is cut through easily with the amount of damage these condi-meta builds can do. Skills/traits is what saves you now, pretty much completely.

3) The shift from Stats to Skills/traits made for a horrible balance decision: Elite specializations, and combining several traits into one trait, or transferring a trait into the profession itself (active always, without need of traits/skills).

Removing amulets was so stupid. Just limits the variety in the game by definition. They need to add a bunch of them back if they want to stop their game dying.

And the shift from stats to traits was also terrible for the game. But there is no going back from the power creep of traits.

Your changes are stupid. Most of the trait power creep was not from specialisations. Adding celestial back is stupid. Healing power and toughness should not be on the same amulet ever.

It is funny they just removed all the amulets killing so many builds. I bet that is why loads of people quit. Really dumb to remove amulets like sentinal. No celestial and clerics was fine as hp and toughness is op. But sentinal had no healing power and they removed that too.

I don’t agree. You are enacting punishment on behalf of Anet. Let them fail on their own.

Also what happened did not happen during your tournament and you have no business punishing ppl.

They have all the business in the world upholding integrity in a tournament who willingly donates money to players (funded by a community).

If you are a prominent, visible part of a community and you take the time to cheat and screw said community with petty actions, why would they keep you around? What example does that set and what does it say about the already struggling competitive scene?

No one cheated who played in the tournament. The integrity of the game was NEVER compromised. The only thing done wrong was some idiots put a price tag on an achievement title. Thats it.

The integrity of UGO is in jeopardy not from the alleged players who took the money, but the people who kittened and moaned to Jebro to d/q ppl so they could win money. See these players aren’t good enough to win it on their own, and have resorted to getting ppl to be d/q’d. Personally they are lower than the alleged team who paid ppl to win the AT.

You know why? Because they were man enough to admit they can’t do, and forked over cash. They didn’t report ppl to anet repeatedly to have them banned so they could win.

No one would have made a fuss about it unless the team that lost in the finals didn’t post name & shame threads on this forum kittening up a storm b/c they felt their golden cookie was stolen from them. They got beat in the finals and threw temper tantrums.

Fact of the matter is they aren’t good enough to be talking. If they were they would have won the match and this wouldn’t be an issue, but they lost.

Also go through the UGO rules and tell me where this alleged violation breaks any rules of UGO. Please I’m waiting for someone to post it.

Now if this were to happen in an UGO sponsored tournament then YES reprecussions are needed, BUT you can’t hold ppl responsible due to Anet’s lack of ability to patrol their own game.

Besides no cheating was done. The abjured players were going to win no matter what…..they just decided that $400 > in game rewards. Can’t fault ppl for that cause every single one of us would have done the same thing.

PvP slowly died ever since the trait merge patch which removed most of the fun from the game and just made it mindless spam. OFC this spam was ok for the first few months, but ever since then the population has crashed.

The power creep introduced with HOT was there but it was minor in comparison to the trait merge patch. That made all classes many times more powerful. Now you get 9 traits which are all merged version of about 20 traits before the patch.

They also hurt build diversity by removing all the amulets in an attempt to make their failed esports more fun to watch. This didnt work and we still have no amulets for those who would like to play a tankier build on some classes.

There is no coming back from the trait merge patch. It is over. This game will never be popular again because the core gameplay is not fun. Who has fun fighting perma invuln mesmers or thieves with 1000 dodges? Nobody.

They cannot reverse the trait merge patch now so its over. GW2’s sales from pvp will continue to trend towards 0.

For example meditation guardians used to have to take 3 traits for monk’s focus. Now they get it all in a single trait. So they can take 2 other traits to complement it. The result is classes which can do everything, both survive and damage. But everyone is doing this. So everyone has shorter cds, harder hitting skills, more defence and more damage mitigation. This resulted in the most optimal strategy being spam. This game should be a case study for how to ruin a great game at release.

Pretty much. HoT power creep killed any chance GW2 PvP had. What’s more dismaying is that the power creep is still at ridiculous levels nearly 2 years after HoT’s release.

Hot wasnt the main power creep. That was the trait merge patch where they randomly merged all traits.

They got rid of expereinced designers who understood risk and reward and understood how to create a game fun to play with and a game where other people were fun to fight against. They replaced these people’s power with those with no design experience.

Are you sure they kicked the class designers out? I believe they just simply moved them to elite specs 2 after the rework to traits was done and the last elite soec shipped.

Robert Gee is still at Arena Net as far as I know, I know he did a lot on Mesmer, Necro and I think Warrior for HoT and they were all very popular on release. I believe he also worked on the original classes when GW2 was being made but don’t quote me on that.

If they were well received then this game would not have rapidly declining incomes. The only conceptually well designed hot classes are repear and dragon hunter as they are replacement effects. Guardian still has 3 virutes, they are just different to dragon hunters 3. Same for repear and necro. So theoritically those classes can be balanced and necro can be as good as repear as it is just different skills.

On the other hand, chronomancer was terrible design because it is a strict upgrade on mesmer. Why would anyone play mesmer now when you get an extra skill with chronomancer? They wouldnt and they dont. This is clear power creep that invalidates base mesmer and it is terrible design. It also leads to people quitting because there is much less build variety now as you have to take the chronomancer line and whatever synergises with that.

All other classes except dragon hunter and repear are the same. The elite specs were upgrades not alternatives. And dragon hunter and repear ended up being much stronger than the base classes anyway. However that issue can be balanced out. You can never balance mesmer with chronomancer.

They are all talented people i am sure but it is about filtering ideas. Jon sharp leaving was a huge blow for the game as he appeared to be the filter which stopped power creep. He wanted classes and specs to have weaknesses. When he left then the filter was gone and we got bad ideas making it into the game. Jon sharp was always talking about how they didnt want to give warrior too many cleanses or they would become unstoppable for example. Now they just give everything to everyone and the result is bad gameplay

In this thread = alot of mesmer/thief players who think it is balanced. A good idea would be to swap shadowstep and portal to other classes if they are not OP.

Necro can have shadowstep and thief can pick any necro utility they want to replace it. Same for portal.

The best skills are what other games nerf. As in, when portal has been one of the most defining and dominant skills in gw2 for 5 years…well that should be a target for a nerf. But nah lets nerf rise and true shot because that is better than portal right

Put any of those necros in solo q and they would still win games.

Funny that you said that because half of those necros are actually people who almost exclusively played warrior in ranked during the last and when they played necro, they were duo with an ele :^)
Then the there is the necro who won the tournament.. he usually plays mesmer and occasionally thief. Apparently the class is so hard to play, that only people who actually don’t play it can do it. Makes sense. It is certainly not related to solo vs duo vs organized play.

I’m not the best player by any stretch yet when I see something I don’t just bang my head against the wall. I identify the problem and either fix it or do what I can to mitigate it.

Guess what, most necros have already identified it. As the leaderboards show, they have also found the fix: Contrary to what you think, it seemingly was not to improve themselves, but to duo queue with an ele

Edit: Don’t get me wrong. Of course they would still win games as they are great players in general but I am also sure, that their overall performance and winrate would have been significantly worse if they had solo queued nec or duo queued nec without support.

Btw it seems a bit off that some guilds are listed with their guild tags where as most are not on the ugo webpage.

I solo q as a necro. I’ve managed to have a career winrate in ranked over 60%. I wish there was an easy way to check but id bet since seasons came out im probably closer to 70%. And to make it worse i typically dont play a meta build…. Most of those seasons besides season 1 and 2 when i played rev i was using a Chrono Runes all wells GS d/w necro.

Never had an ele babysitting me and im not the best player, but i learned when to engage and when not too, and i learned to not just spam the kitten out of my skills whenever they are off cooldown.

So forgive me if i dont feel sorry for anyone who struggles in the same meta that i can use a freaking chrono runes diviner ammy necro WITH ALMOST ZERO condi clear and come out with a 60-70% winrate……

Great. The point Erzian is making is that it isnt necro that is good, it is ele with necro. Without ele then necro is awful.

I didnt play the game for 2 years and then played the season before last. I did decent solo although not great. I then queued with an ele friend and ended up legend around 1970 mmr iirc (before quitting again). It was not hard to get legend with an ele friend as he just carried me whilst I clicked buttons, i didnt know any of the skills other classes were doing lol. The difference in power level is extreme.

Playing necro without an ele is basically a pointless endeavour and not worth the frustration. Without an ele necro has been the worst class for a long time. I didnt watch the tournament so I have no knowledge of the necros playing, but if they want to do a whole season as a purely solo queue condi necro then I would like to see their final win rate compared to any other class solo.

Lol, again you and your blame thread about some class is OP. You should add some of “your team calculations” as you did before :-)

Mesmer get nerfed in last release. Thief too. And they are not OP, there are other classes which needs tweaks/balance because “OPness”. And there will always be some class “OP”, it’s in all games and that’s why there should me more frequent balance patches – but it’s for another discussion.

But again – mesmer nor thief are not OP, try to play them (and please, do not compare them, or any other class, with “your” necro).

So you think portal is worse than rise, true shot and we heal as one? Awesome :P

Mesmer and thief have been vastly OP for almost the entire life of the game.

Ironically the only reason they aren’t nerfed is that it is now EXPECTED that these classes are vastly OP. So if they were ever balanced people would think they were underpowered even though they wouldn’t be, purely because the base case is that they are OP.

But yeh, lets not nerf mesmer and thief because there was 2 months during the 5 years of the game when these classes weren’t totally broken. Therefore they need to be OP for the other 5 years to compensate.

GJ. Keep it up lol. Clearly these classes are so much fun to fight against for all players. I am sure having them perma broken is helping your player base. Who doesnt like the two hardest to kill classes doing huge damage right and having mad mobility right?

Portal is clearly a balanced skill btw. So is shadowstep. Lets nerf rise, we heal as one and true shot instead. Because clearly those are much better than shadowstep and portal arent they. Much balance well played.

condi bomb -> moa and moa -> condi bomb is very difference. If you a mes you know what i said ( bomb -> stealth -> moa). Although i will stand and afk and take a coffee to see their show. But for newbie, they kill theirself. And how long CD of moa for eng and mes??? 1.5 mins? 1 mins?

If you’re a mes you’d know mesmer metas haven’t be using stealth for 6 seasons already. Ofc the options are there and you can talk about those odd builds minority uses, but know that you either have to sacrifice portal or signet of illusions, both of which are essential in rotation or your “condi bomb”.

Just a example, stealth just for who can dodge. Actual, bomb -> moa is enough. There are too confusion. 50% time, you cannot see them spell , you don’t know what they are spell, just dodge when the condi bomb are explosion. If the mes isn’t a spammmmer, the moa will coming~

The thing is, if you get moa bursted you lose all of your defenses regardless of your class. With a few minor exceptions, the only things that will make a class more likely to survive as a moa is health pool and toughness (things like passive elixer s, defy pain can help but most classes don’t have things like that). With necro along with warrior having the highest health pool it actually makes them more likely to live long enough to get out of moa and recover than say an ele, thief or guardian.

A good mesmer will follow a necro around and moa him all game and basically win the game for you. It is hard to moa every other class as they can actually use dodges, invulns and blocks. Necro never dodges or uses invulns so you can just kill it with moa over and over. Elites being reset by the mesmer 5 ability is utterly stupid.

Just avoid mesmers if you play condi necro. Your attacks are too slow to hit them and they are perma invuln. So it is just pointless to fight them, they cleanse condis more than any class probably. Also avoid thieves as they can spam headshot and kill you with ease. Then when you go into ds they run off and wait you out. The other classes you can at least hit but still you will probably die to them too. Basically this game sucks. You should play necro by going to team fights with an ele and spam all your aoe and kill everything

Its not tournaments so it is pointless. You can do 2v2 already on any map you like.

None of these infrastructure changes mean anything when the gameplay is so stale and bad. The game just isnt fun since the trait-merge power creep patch.

Nothing will change this so their game will continue to die. It is basically dead already, look at the money (lack of money) the game is making.

What counters the class that is almost perma impossible to hit and does massive damage? hmm let me think. O yeh. Nothing. They can escape any tough situations and should basically never die if played correctly.

So they:
1, Do the most spike damage
2, Are the hardest class to kill far
3, Have the mobility to get decaps and quickly get kills

Thief should either have much less damage or they should have considerable nerfs to their sustain. Doing massive damage, being unkillable and having the best mobility is not balance.

Yes jebros hosting a tournament which has over 1k now In community funded prize money which brought back a lot of former pro players .

That is not a scene…. that is just one tourney.

But it was at least a start!
And btw can we keep the discussion balance related and not just trolls trying to delegitimizate what this thread was created for .

Why balance around a bunch of try hards. We finally got rid of esports and now you want them to balance around it again? This is what killed the game before. They prioritised balance and not fun/variety for way way too long. As a result this game is deader than dead.

Balance doesnt matter. They need fun and build diversity. So what if previously every class had an op build so it was balanced. It wasnt balanced around anything but a single lame op spec on each class.

In all fairness though, the meta and lack of build variety across the board is just a small part of the bigger problem.
I’ve not set foot in PvP for 2 months because it is entirely stale. The maps. The builds. The lack of battle choice (we have conquest, conquest… Conquest, conquest, oh and stronghold which is a PvE arms race…) The, ahem, ‘variety’ of builds that compete with other builds on the same level (Next to none). The mode itself is bland.

It’s not that simple when you have very little control over your party composition especially when terribads that only play 1 class will refuse to swap and MMR is all over the plce. My problem is definitely not self improvement lol none of t his would be an issue if I could just take a full team of friends into pvp who actually know how to play.

The current system is not competitive AT ALL. Duo queue is a complete joke, who the kittenhought of that lol people asked for solo q and team q to be separate, not this garbage.

This game is amazing what are you all talking about. I love dying to 14k of PI damage which is completely passive. The counter is obviously not to cast anything and die to auto attacks. It is an amazing game this game. My passive procs vs your passive procs as we both spam a rotation on a point. Its awesome.

And the skill comes from knowing which rotation to use vs which calss. I love such brainless gameplay where all you have to do is be lame.
