The latest patch made me quit my Ranger. Now I feel bad lol. Then again my Zerkermancer is pretty amazing, not gonna lie…

He’s probably thinking 1v1 where fights sometimes come down to who has the better downed damage output.

Most classes have a “power” build and a “condition build”.

Our class is at least gaining notability in one area: WvW. In WvW skilled groups bring necros. Nobody does the AoE better then us. Wells, Marks, DS siphon and countless other AoE’s on all of are other weapons not to mention Epidemic.

But if we’re talking class focus, its condition and boon control. Even our power builds apply conditions and strip boons. Our focus, from a skill focus point of view, is on ‘conversion’.

We turn enemy boons into liabilities. We apply mass conditions to the enemy while removing them en masse from our own team. We steal their life, and add it to our own hp. We turn the tables on the enemy like a see-saw. Do we do the highest damage? No, our bleeds aren’t the strongest, our burst isn’t good and our defense is meh. Yet we win so many battles. That is because we take away the enemies ability to make war.

I used to play a Herald of Xotli in AoC. That was simply THE most fun I ever had with any class. It played something like a Fire Ele with a fiery great sword. Also had some necro/warlock abilities thrown in for good measure. I’d love to see necro’s get some hellfire abilities with a greatsword.

I agree with you Varconi and wish I had the willpower. I know you didn’t say it but I will, if not the game we should at least quit our rangers en masse as a form of protest.

Answer: Quit playing. When Anet see’s Ranger numbers drop off dramatically they will know something is up. Now whether they CARE or not is a entirely different matter.

Joey – yes but it did not destroy those conditions, it sent them to your pet. And since our pet is so important to us as a class, that is a huge trade off. What if you pop RaO and suddenly your 10 conditions get sent to your pet. You have to swap, and then no more RaO might for you (RaO buff does not carry over when you swap).

use w/e traits. I went for lots of vigor so I can dodge all of the things for infinite. Got 20k hp, 36% crit, 3000 power and 3100 armor. You can eat 2 Hundred blades to the face. But thats only if you forgot to DOOODGE!

We’re great at 1v1. It’s group fighting where we lose our shine. Our group support is bad, our aoe is bad, our dps dies when our pet does. All we do well is CC at that point.

One of the Ranger’s biggest flaws is that so much of it’s dps comes from the pet. Yet the pet dies so much and STILL has trouble hitting moving targets.

I can’t even play ranged ranger anymore. I realized you have to be melee, and lock your enemy down and handicap him every possible way, just so your pet can do its thing.

Here’s what I think. Our pet shouldn’t even be necessary (and our weapon damage balanced accordingly) unless we spec 30 BM, and if we spec 30 BM, he better be awesome. Second, no matter what he needs to have 80% aoe damage resistance, ESPECIALLY from cleaves. Third, Champion and Indignation npcs should have their AI changed to stop focusing pets. They have the same aggro AI as your regular mooks, and mooks target pets/minions first by default to make life easier on pet classes.

Oh man don’t even compare CCP to Anet. CCP beats them hands down. I can feel the hints they took from Eve, like unified markets and persistent world changing battle. But this is no Eve. It’d be nice to get a game that fell somewhere between “1-2 weeks to maxed out, then play in a sandbox” and “1-2 years to max out, fight over a galaxy.”.

That aside, I said what I did because I’d rather be pessimistic and be wrong, then be optimistic and be wrong. Know what I mean?

The reason they don’t respond is psychological. They know if they just keep those Ranger fixes “over the horizon” there won’t be a mass exodus of their player base.

If they said what their plans were, like: “6 months from now we will buff a signet, oh and ‘fix’ Empathic bond so it doesn’t remove all conditions.”

I’m pretty sure we’d all just uninstall. So they’ll keep us in suspense instead.

The way you beat a trap ranger is by not being a baddie. A well played condition thief can kill any ranger build, especially a Trap ranger. You get a free C&D off the pet and never have to get close to the ranger and his traps. Shortbow has no volley to track you in stealth and if you stop being so predictable, he won’t know where to swing his sword/throw his traps.

Ranger can’t do that because Ranger can’t do AOE damage. Half our dps comes from our pet, which is single target only. We’re not the only class in the ‘single target damage only’ boat. In fact other then Ele’s I don’t think any other class can match the Warriors aoe dps. Ok Necro theoretically could if conditions weren’t so easy to cleanse.

if your opponent is running from your pet, your pet is doing its job. if you really want to stay on top of a target that is running from you, you need 1h sword. GS is good too but it doesn’t have 100% uptime cripple like 1h sword. use “about face” to double leap chase with sword 2.

shortbow is a great chasing weapon as well, but it doesn’t have the same gap closing potential outside of short cripple & backside stun. combine both weapons for best chasing—cripple with shortbow, then swap to sword and leap-chase.

i’m all for these suggestions, except none of them work in WvW because i’ll get instagibbed if i melee even with durability stats.

It takes work to be tanky enough to melee fight in a zerg. I do it all the time now that I’ve got the hang of it. So here are some tips:

1. Condition Removal: Empathic bond IS amazing, but not for melee zerging. Reason being is you need on demand condition removal the moment you get focused. Waiting 10 secs for a passive cleaning will get you killed, especially if immobilized. I run a human ranger, and use both Cleansing signet AND Blessing of Kormir.

2. Bark Skin: Since you filled your bar or found other active forms of condition removal, you can go ahead and take Bark skin.

3. Armor: 3100 armor rating is doable. Knights/Soldier gear all the way.

4. Damage or Healing: You can either kill quick with soldier/knights, or heal with Soldier/Clerics. I personally like critting, to harness all the sources of Fury a Ranger has. (Weapon swap, Pack Runes, and ofc RaO)

5: Tactics: People tell you to use your evades, and that’s fine. But you need a strategy when ‘going in’. If you just lock on to a target like a snapping turtle you will just be dragged to your death. This is the hardest thing to get across to another. You need to Think like a predator, like a wolf. You need to be able to see individuals in the herd (enemy zerg) who can be picked off, or separated, or dragged back away from the herd. Then you do it. Another simpler tactic is jousting where you run in swinging your sword like a madman doing damage to as many people as possible, then turn back and jump away before they have time to coordinate a focus on you. You break combat (USE F3!!) heal up, and repeat.

melee builds are better geared for BM. Dagger oh has 6s cripple. GS has sword toss cripple + number 5 which stuns and makes pets next attack do more damage. One handed sword has cripple for enemy AND might for your pet in its auto attack chain.

Kormir’s blessing removes 3 conditions, which makes humans a good choice too. You can never have too much condition removal.

I use both. Swoop + hilt bash, then swap, throw dagger, poison roll, spammmmmmmmm autoattack; win or he runs. If he runs, swap back, swoop, stun, bear slash, offensively block (:3), hopefully by now swap is off cd so I can get back to spammmmmmming.

What I like is that I see threads like these that remind me what the Rangers forum could be like.

To my repliers earlier; emoting over a corpse you killed 5 to 1 is bad sportsmanship, period. Running away from a 1v1, especially from a ranger is just cowardly. That is all I’ve got to say about that.

In other news, I really didn’t know CD was a oceanic heavy server till after we started fighting yaks. I usually like being the under dog but fighting desperate battle after another during NA hours is tiring. I reallly reallly hope we don’t move up another tier… ;_;

Greatsword is good. I’m not running the build now but suffice to say, it has a lot of synergy with BM. It

Lets you swoop to target, then when you pet swap your pet can immediately start attacking.

Makes you able to soak damage while your pet does the dirty work.

Causes melee characters to stand in one spot while they square off with you, completely forgetting about that wolf gnawing their butt.

It has cons too: Mainly lack of good snares. If you don’t have a ranged secondary most people will just kite you. If swoop is the only attack you are landing, you’re losing.

Yeah, Knight/soldier mixed gear is good dps and tank. I think you will get more bang for your buck with precision then healing power with Ranger.

Honestly other then a select few guilds (Oos on Yaks, Kiwi on SBI) everyone has been very respectful and fair playing. There’s always going to be a few rotten apples in the dozen. You just have to know how to take them out

To be fair I’ve seen CD siege camp spawns before. Idk about Yaks but definitely FA.

Longbow needs fixes too. Oh and quickness not applying correctly to sb. And traps being in a tree unrelated to condition damage. Oh and 1h sword attack rooting you and making it impossible to dodge without taking it off autoattack. Greatsword damage is too low too.

That’s not even getting started on pet issues.

I don’t like blowouts one way or the other. If I can’t get kills because A. we’re being spawn camped or B. the enemy went home, Wvw isn’t fun.

I wish anet would do more about these lopsided situations.

On the shortbow, use sigil of earth. Otherwise all that precision is a waste.

OH and that trait, sharpened edges, SUCKS. It bleeds for 1 sec on crit. Worthless!

Even with 0 condi damage bleeds have a nice base damage.

DPS lost for not having any power is a lot more dramatic. Especially against high toughness enemies.

I ran a very tanky GS ranger. 1k healing power, heal as one, water runes. It held its own but…

It wasn’t as tanky as a guardian and did less damage.

Then I played a guard and realized why it wasn’t working. Guards have multiple skills that take advantage of their Healing. Their F2, their utilities, their weapon skills, and ofc their main heal. They have green numbers flying all the time. Rangers just CANT do that. SO Healing on a ranger is compartively speaking a waste.

So I switched Clerics for Knight’s and HUGE improvement. Troll Unguent heals great without any healing at all and the extra armor protects that healing better. Of course, the precision gives much better dps. Overall, small sacrifice in tank for big gain in dps.

Give us a ability that will let us combine all of our active minions into 1 super minion. The more minions you have out (including fiends) the stronger it is. Pic included. Bonus points if its a tentacle monster =D

Runes: Undead, Pack or Water/Dwayna depending on what you’re doing. Good sigils are Corruption, Bloodlust, Force and Earth.

Depends on which ‘viable’ build you are running.

Trap Rangers use condition damage + physical damage. For this you would use Knight’s gear + Sigil of Earth, Undead Runes and rare pizzas. You could swap the sigil of earth for sigil of corruption. That is a judgement call on your part. I like earth myself since you will pretty much proc it immediately with sb’s fast fire rate.

BM Rangers are tank stars that run Soldier/Cleric gear and typically use Water, Dwayna, Dolyak, Undead, ect. The idea here is to have high healing power for you and your pet.

NOTE: The Ranger does not have any real healing utility other then Signet of the Beastmaster. Thus they can’t take advantage of high healing power as well as a Guardian or Elementalist can. Focusing on Healing to the exclusion of vitality will net you a smaller effective HP then if you try a balanced approach.

My build is extremely similar to his, except I use RAO and I have 30 in BM and only 10 in spirits. Same trait layout for the most part. It kinda shocked me to see someone else running the build I’ve been using for awhile and making a good vid of it, so I took a shot at it as well with a bit of footage I had lying around.

Easiest way to get your pet out of combat is to pet swap. Also the F3 return to me ability works good. Now I do rely on my gs and maybe that extra distance from swoop causes f3 to teleport my pet or something but I’ve never had trouble getting out of combat.

I love the Frost Bow! I’ve probably used yours a few times. Then again I am a ranger and standard longbow skills give me a sad. Frost Bow makes me happy again

No I am pretty sure that title belongs to the Necromancer. Only a handful of traits make any difference at all for them, and all of the minors are garbage. I’d say if anything Rangers have pretty decent traits, its just some are in the wrong places (traps).

This is a LTP issue. The greatsword, use it. It has a 4 second moving block, a long distance rush on a short cd and a stun if necessary. Wolves are amazing cover for a escape. Trait their howls to do cripple and given how long it takes them actually howl, by the time they do the enemy will run right into it. That speed signet is pretty sexy too…and lastly: dodge rolling. For those of us who work during the day I’m dissapointed the update hasn’t been released yet. No doubt the update server will crash just like it did for the Lost Shore update. Why not release it at a time when people can just leave their client on, then come home and find their game updated and ready to go? Tonight’s going to be a headache…

Personally I enjoy my greatsword ranger. I still use my shortbow a lot though, mostly to kill runners. Anyone who stands and fights me though gets a greatsword to the face. It’s very effective!

Yes it was a good fight. When we can field a que (like we did tonight at times) we can stand toe to toe with anybody. I was the crazy great sword ranger with the glowy blue sword.
