I got the dialogue on my Asura… I’m not sure why. But it really stuck with me.
I just want to say how much I love the new system. Once the system is in place I’ll buy a set (or two!) of armor and/or town clothes as a thank you (I haven’t bought a set of either yet)! These are issues that I’ve wanted since the beginning of the game. As a GW1 player, I LOVE this change. It is like how the costume keeper in GW worked.
I do want to know though, do we get a hat slot? As in, can we mix and match hats with town clothes sets (not just make invisible the helm)? I’d like to put reading glasses on a character plus the town clothes (we had a hat slot and an outfit slot in GW1, so if it’s the same way, thank you so so much! – even if not, it’s MUCH better than it was).
Edit: Okay, it seems there isn’t even a hat slot. Nonetheless, that is one thing that I hope is feasible in the future. Hats were possible in GW (not separate pants and tops), so I’m hoping for them in the future (I don’t really care if separate pants and tops are ever implemented).

Sieran’s my favorite Sylvari (besides my chars, of course)! I wish I could adventure more with her.
But yes, please, let’s have villains be something other than Sylvari. I want my main’s race not to be villains at every turn.
Couldn’t we have done a Flame Legion Charr or something like in GW1? Or human, like in GW1?
Or an Inquest Asura (which would have made more sense with acing all the Asuran Colleges)?
My standard build is staff and scepter/torch in PvE. Very similar. I use scepter/pistol as the alternative weapon set in PvP (I might to go scepter/torch in PvP but I need to play around a bit more – the easy interrupt with the pistol is seductive). I’ll have to look at my character exactly to determine traits. The Staff is an extremely nice weapon once you get used to using it. At first I didn’t think I’d like it because I thought it was weak also, but I think it’s actually a very strong weapon when used properly… I grew to love it.
4th can probably get you out of a bad spot, though, if used wisely. Really like the descriptions. Do they have names for all of them?
It’s torment on shatter in Illusion line.
Already confirmed in the live stream
Sounds good to me. I really like the condition torment and I much prefer on shatter than on death traits.
Isn’t there already a trait that puts confusion on at least most shatters? Oh… it’s not even a major trait. All you need is 5 points in Illusion.
It could also be on shatter, with maim being some form of heavy damage on shatter (or death of illusion).
I’m also thinking Illusion magic line, what do you think?
I’m wondering if the dragon is the source of Nightmare. Noting that Ceara had nightmares that seemed to be linked to the dragon Mordremoth.
At the end of the latest update’s discussion if you talk to her (I just pressed F on any possible NPC whenever possible to all of them, not just the ones you’re supposed to click on, you get some interesting hints that way, also, of what’s coming up). She said, effectively, that she was so angry with Scarlet she is tempted to stomp any flower she sees. You say Scarlet’s more like a weed. Then she says something along the lines of she thought at first that Sylvari were innocent, but after Scarlet she doesn’t think she can trust another Sylvari again.
I think people would dislike the race that was the main antagonist – but not so much as Sylvari. Why?
Humans are normal antagonists.
Asura can fall under evil genius.
Norn would be a bit odd, honestly, due to their joviality.
Charr were antagonists in GW1, so it’s normal.
People want to dislike Sylvari because they see Trahearne as stealing their thunder like Kormir did in GW1. I’m surprised they made the same mistake. Unfortunately, on top of this, Scarlet was the antagonist and Sylvari, but not necessarily nightmare court. Why did they not make her Nightmare Court? I could have dealt with that.
It really saddened me when Marjory said she wouldn’t trust another Sylvari
The Nightmare Court are a segment of Sylvari that believe that Ventari’s Tablet is not worth listening to (the things that make Sylvari a noble race). This makes the Nightmare Court cold and pragmatic…. but they also not only are cold, but they torture. The more torture and pain Sylvari feel, the more tempted they are by Nightmare and then the more the Nightmare corrupts the Dream.
Nightmare are, effectively corrupt Sylvari.
Ventari was important because, as a Centaur with his friendship with the human, Ronan, they overcame racial differences and were able to see the good in each other. Ronan planted the seed of the Pale Tree 250 years ago and Ventari raised what would become the Pale Tree. Only recently it flowered and bore fruit (the Sylvari).
The Sylvari are a noble race and they better not make Sylvari out to be dragonspawn. I partly like them because of their innocence and nobility. In GW, humans ended doing quite a few dumb things and arguably caused the dragon Primordus to awake. Charr were the enemies of humans and they have a horrid tendency to destroy all nature around them (I’m an environmentalist – I suppose another reason I like Sylvari). I do like Norn and Asura, but they, indeed, do not have the innocence that Sylvari do. I love the motto “All things have a right to grow.” As a self-identified dove/pacifist, I really appreciate the motto.
Crystals do grow… it just takes the right conditions. You wouldn’t have crystals if they didn’t “grow.”
Once something is corrupted, however, all it does is do a dragon’s bidding. The Dream would be Nightmare if Sylvari were corrupted. But for some reason the baddies in the Living Story tended to be Sylvari (and not particularly Nightmare Court either!). Please, just please stop with the evil Sylvari storylines. I was saddened at Marjory Delaqua’s reaction to Scarlet in that she may never trust another Sylvari. It is the last thing Tyria needs is yet another racial tension.
I have a problem… these hairstyles are absolutely amazing!! I particularly like the branches with flowers (I’d been wanting a hairstyle like that for Sylvari for ages, if I’d had that option from the beginning I may have changed my characters up a bit) and the cat tail ponytail (as much as the pigtails are cool, they’re a bit on the too Scarlet-esque side for me)… but I don’t have a character to put them on! I have one character of each profession, I want to do stories of each race, and I don’t think the hairstyles will fit my Sylvari Mesmer’s theme and I already changed my Sylvari Engie’s hair to the awesome fern ponytail.
I…. need an excuse to make a new Sylvari character…. even then I’d have a hard time deciding between branches with flowers, branches, or cat tail ponytail… though I’d probably go with branches with flowers since I love the oaken helm and have been wanting a hairstyle specifically like that for awhile now (adorned long branches). So glad to see it’s in game!
Norn master race!
Which set(s) are on your Mezzy?
I LOVE looking at all these awesome Norn….
It is 250 years after GW1. After they were pushed South, in that short span of time, they developed dark skin, which helped their survivability in the heat. Note that they generate a lot of heat when they move such that their bodies are well adapted to the cold (which includes pale skin to help them get nutrients they wouldn’t otherwise obtain with little sun) – dark skin would certainly help in the heat (to prevent dangerous burning of their fragile skin in the sun). Of course, 250 years is extraordinarily rapid in terms of Earthly evolution (when humans went North, they went lighter-skinned as it was advantageous), but this IS Tyria and a fantasy game after all….
Dark hair, also, is not abnormal for pale-skinned people.
Regarding dungeons:
You only get 66 tokens per explorable mode run. It takes 1380 tokens to get one dungeon set. I think it takes another 500 for a staff? Anyway… that’s a good 21 runs.
1 run takes me probably an average of 45 minutes (some go poorly, some go well – our average is honestly probably higher than 45 minutes as we 4-man some). So that would be 21*45 minutes, which is 945 minutes or 15.75 hours, and we’ll round that up to 16.1. 300 for the staff
2. you probably shouldn’t be trying to 4 man. Dungeon runs (except for Arah) normally take between 15 minutes (Sorrow’s Embrace, Citadel of Flame) and 30 minutes.Problems:
1)That gets boring fast. My group likes to alternate dungeons so we don’t get bored doing the same one over and over.
2) When we do a dungeon on a weekend, we only do one run of one path of a dungeon because it takes a bit of the fun out of the game when we likely run into some issues just getting through the dungeon. For us, that would take us 21 weekends of the same dungeon or 5 months and 1 week in the same dungeon doing it every weekend. We often don’t do one every weekend either. We want to do other stuff like living story or leveling or…Good news! Dungeon armour skins are normally unimpressive and only used for the stats (unless you ran something like Arah, which is considered hard, therefore you can show off), besides dungeons when it comes to exotics you can craft them, buy them, buy them with karma, buy them with WvW tokens and when it comes to ascendeds you can’t really get them in dungeons anyway ^^.
I’d like it if there were a universal dungeon token that let you get an armor set from any of the dungeons for spending 16 hours total in all 8.
Bad idea. You would encourage people to do nothing but farm CoF path 1. Arah that takes 4 hours if you’re unexperienced would never be run.
What if it required a set number of tokens from EACH dungeon?
I said we 4-man some, not all. We’ve started adding a fifth with the LFG tool.
I like Twilight for my Sylvari Mesmer.
They’re losing my money because I refuse to buy an armor set unless I can put it on all my characters. Then, and only then, will I ever consider buying an armor set (thankfully the armor sets they’ve made are uninteresting to me). I have only bought a masque (which annoyed me that I can’t use it in PvP, also) and a Staff (which also annoyed me that I can’t use it in PvP, also). I also validated buying them for one character as they were rather Mesmer-y in style.
I bought a cosmetic outfit in GW1 because I could use it on all my characters.

I wish the skin wasn’t blue. I love the armor, but the only thing holding me back from buying it is the fact that the skin is blue…and there is no option to turn it on or off. I know it’s supposed to be “zodiac” themed, but how can it be possible to mix and match zodiac armor with other armor when the boobs and arms are blue but the legs and head are flesh tone?
If you’re a sylvari and recolour yourself to be the same tone of blue you can mix and match ^.^
That’s kind of my problem with it. It only looks good on blue Sylvari :/ 1 very specific color of 1 race… And I don’t like making blue Sylvari – they look too Avatar-y for me. I like blue accents (nature often has blue accents), but not blue skin (though the blue Sylvari I meet are very beautiful).

5 months and 1 week sounds reasonable… if they’d let us do different dungeons each weekend to get the tokens to be able to get an armor set. But you see now how it would take us years just to get one set as we like to rotate and only do one on weekends due to our small group. Which brings me to….
I’d like it if there were a universal dungeon token that let you get an armor set from any of the dungeons for spending 16 hours total in all 8. Spending the same amount of time, but having more fun and more variety. It would also motivate my group to do dungeons as right now we see dungeon armor sets as not feasible, but we would certainly see that as feasible. It seems absurd to be able to do every path of every dungeon, but not be able to get 1 set after that accomplishment (we intend to go for that title).
Edit: It doesn’t say anything about skill that you can run a dungeon 21 times. It just says that you have too much time on your hands. It says something about skill when you can complete all the paths!
This infeasibility is partly why I’d like decent armor sets in the gem store. I haven’t seen one that I’ve wanted to buy yet. And there are so many NPC armors that I’d just LOVE. Why can’t we make the human NPC armor be the Anise set, the Norn equivalent be the Raven set, the Sylvari set be… and have the armor drastically change depending on race?
(edited by Lorelei.7809)
Blue skin ruins it, so I won’t buy it, but still I have to admit that this armor is a beautiful design, I just prefer more simple and natural armors over the shiny ones. I would die for this though:
That armor’s in game somehow, but not accessible?!
I’d love that one, too….
I have a similar toned sylvari, but I will have to look up what skin-tone it is. But it would be a rather light green.
You’d have to have long ears and a leaf-top hairstyle.
My Sylvari Mesmer is more of a “pretty” Sylvari, her skin tone is I think pine, and her pattern color is I believe dark pine – basically she’s a natural green, with darker hands and feet due to her pattern. PM me, and I will meet you in-game (with both my Engineer and Mesmer to see my different looks).
I have seen some very beautiful light Sylvari Mesmers in the white to purple range. I went “natural” with mine. My Mesmer’s glow is also green (again, a version of pine I believe).
I think dark looks good, but it might be hard to find an appropriate balance. But maybe a possibility: since Mesmers have a bit of a purple theme, make her be dark purple, with a lighter purple pattern and bright purple glow. You can perhaps inverse that with keeping the glow the same (I like bright colors for glows and I like keeping with the same theme).
I think my Engineer looks fairly exotic with light green skin and dark purple hair and pattern. I really like the contrast.
Mesmers are mysterious, and commonly themed purple. I’d suggest light – partly because I think it’s easier to work with and that you can make some rather dashing contrast patterns, but dark should be able to be worked with (I had a hard time making one that worked that I could see any contrast in my pattern with her general look without getting a particular armor).
I’d really like a branchy one like the oaken armor helm. Obviously different than it, but it would be nice to have a very branchy ’do. Maybe add some leaves in their or vines to the branches? Or even flowerbuds/flowers?
The current Sylvari looks are awesome. Just more and more would be even better!
I don’t understand, you mean something like this one below? We have branches already and they have leaves on them so I’m wondering how much more can you make out of them.
like that but fuller and longer.. as I said, more like the oaken helm.
http://gw2.unfair.co/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Sylvari-Female-Cultural-Tier-3-Heavy-Oaken.jpg
To differentiate it, perhaps, add vines and/or flowers and/or leaves. And obviously, have the branches twisted in a different manner.
I’d love to see lovestruck armor…
Also winter’s armor and Dragon’s Jade…
I love the zodiac weapons. I intend to get one if I ever get enough tickets.
Legs would be good! yes! Raven armor (I know it doesn’t really show legs, but does do a bit of skimp otherwise that I think people would be cool with), Bear armor has some leg showin’…. any other notable NPCs?
Can’t you see, that if you take out the blue (or think the blue is your skin – which is a valid thought, and one that I think), that it is FAR skimpier there than any other armor set?
I can see just fine why some people don’t like it. I disagree with them. If it makes you uncomfortable then I suggest not looking at it. I know this sounds rude. I am not trying to be rude about it. But there is no way to please everyone. Some will like it, some will hate it, some will feel uncomfortable by seeing too much boob, etc.
Some sets will be a winner and some will not. I disliked the reskined, “just add fire” sets, this is much better in my opinion. I like the blue star-y kinda look. I don’t love the helms. and so I don’t show mine.
I have a Norn thief covered in tats. I have armor that shows as much of them as possible and leaves her with a little clothes as possible. I am still looking for smaller boots.
I do understand your point and others as well. I am just not sure what the solution is. Should they cover more and make some uncomfortable players happy? Or should they leave it as is, and make those who bought it happy.
When players already looks like 120W lightbulbs with 10 different effect item, how would it make sense in the lore?
Does it always have to make sense in the lore? How do lovestruck weapons fit into the lore? How does Zodiac anything fit into the lore?
They should leave it as-is and consider that they may have pushed it too far for future armor sets.
No, they don’t have to. The unicorn legendary obviously doesn’t fit in the lore.
I’d just really really really like a few NPC armor sets (and I know many others like them) and am confused why they haven’t and/or cannot either put them out in the gem store or in-game somewhere (they’re already modeled).
Edit: This is going to sound odd to you but I really don’t want the armor set changed. The only possible change I’d like is giving optional different colors (say, red, yellow, blue, green, and purple).

It’s funny you mention swimsuits, as someone who started making more conservative swimsuits gets her inventory sold out quickly due to significant demand. Societies don’t go through a straight line from conservative to liberal. It’s a sine wave – and feminists these days split on the subject – is it empowering to be wearing skimpy clothes/showing the female form or is it demeaning because that’s what we’re expected to do and get ogled at if we do so?
but yeah, I said some people’s. I was mainly pointing out that it is rather extreme in comparison to other armor sets that they have made. It pushes mine because it shows the fronts of the breasts to the point where it would show “tips” if it weren’t for the blue shinies on the human and Norn sets. Note: Showing “tips” is considered indecent exposure here in the US. There isn’t a swimsuit that would be able to be worn publicly with that amount of skimp on the breasts.
@Kopper: It would be nice for it just to be the smidgest of smidgest more conservative because some of us are uncomfortable and/or find it distasteful with all that is showing in the chest area. This is by far the skimpiest armor in that area. I think all other armor sets look perfectly fine. This one just pushes it a smidge too far. Just a few mm more cloth and I’d be 100% cool with it (still wouldn’t buy it, though because the blue goes with none of my characters).
Edit: Take a look at other armor sets (using human as reference):

Your picture shows much more how prudish male armor is designed (light). Look at all the woman skin and compare it to the fully covered ugly male armor.
Yeah, we need more eye candy for the ladies ^^
Eye candy for us? YAY! I’ve always wanted to see the light armour for men get dapper bow ties, waist coats and vests…. maybe a cardigan..
Oh…not that kind…? Just more skin…? No thanks.. bleh.
A bowtie in a future set would be amazing.

More variety is better, but, part of my point is that it is and can certainly push some people’s comfort zone due to where the skimp is, not that it’s skimpy.
Everyone knows we’re going to be seeing skimpy armors. I’d personally like seeing an armor that had an open back, showed some leg, showed some midriff, and some arm… but not… that much of the chest area :/ On the set I’d like I’d like the chest to be at least as covered as Raven Shaman (which we can’t get >_<).
I personally find the completely open chest artistic (if you don’t see the nipples on it). It makes your character look like some sort of alien celestial body rather than an actual individual. I really like the weirdness of it.
Yeah, I really like it on blue Sylvari for that reason…. but on the humans and Norn? no… (I keep my human covered completely >_>)

but maybe it being the skimpiest armour set is a good thing? All armour shouldn’t be covering and all armour shouldn’t be skimpy. This one is skimpy, the next one that they should release should be covering. The more variety the better.

I looked at the armor on my characters again…
The heavy to me looks the best as it has the most coverage and might be bearable without the blue (I don’t have any characters that would go with the blue theme).
All the armors by far look best on blue Sylvari (I have green ones and it looks really really awkward on them – I like to at least see my characters’ faces and hair so full helms are a no-go for me).
Just please, in the future, make armors that have more chest coverage – I am not asking for much! This is the first armor that has pushed that limit for me (but I’d like some with more coverage, less frill, and some back/midriff skin showing).
It doesn’t look as bad as I thought, though, but maybe that’s because I previewed it on a Norn first and it looked horrendous and then I previewed it on a Sylvari?
Edit: Yes, I like the sparkly idea. But why can’t they be a layer on top of your char’s skin so they don’t cover up your char customization? Again, though, a little more coverage, please.
(edited by Lorelei.7809)
I just don’t want the armor to be dye-able (people would go skin-tone) or the blue to be able to be switched off because then, ArenaNet would be going further than Tera with skimpiness… we don’t want that do we? :P
Dear Anet,
About the zodiac armor…
1) Armor itself is very cool, much kudos but
2) Make the blue character skin dyeable or
3) Able to be toggled on or offP.S. Or just take the blue skin out completely. Character individuality gets thrown out the window and this effect would have been better utilized as accented design throughout the armor.
IF it’s dye-able, people would use skin-color which would defeat their purpose of making it blue in the first place (so that they could get away with a more risque design – note the controversy). IF it were able to be turned off, they would need to remodel it entirely as it would be too risque and not teen-rated.
From what I can tell, even Tera covers where these armors don’t if the blue skin were taken off the armor…
If Tera wouldn’t do it, why should ArenaNet?
(edited by Lorelei.7809)
It couldn’t be dye-able either because then people would make it skin-tone which would defeat the purpose of them making everything blue in the first place (so they could show more skin without showing more skin). They’d have to let you choose say, 1 of 5 different set color options (so maybe it would work for more sylvari colors).
Edit: basically, this armor cannot be changed unless they gave options of pre-set colors. So the focus should be on what they should do in the future.
(edited by Lorelei.7809)
For my own part, not speaking for anyone else, I’m just tired of seeing “heavy armor” with more skin than metal. That’s all. I think it’s a funny mistake on Anet’s part that they included nipples, and also somewhat bizarre considering their stance on the subject. Did you know that the female Orrian heavy chestplate used to show flesh underneath the claws covering the breasts, rather than a metallic plate? They changed it in Beta Weekend 3 or for release, I forget which. No one even complained about it, but apparently that was too tasteless. Now that they’re making money off of it though, clearly even nudity is fair game. It smacks of a cheap cash grab.
I’m not taking any kind of moral stance. I just think it’s sleazy, from a business perspective and from a content/design standpoint as well. I like nipples, I even have a pair myself. But I really don’t see a particular reason for them to be displayed on my supposedly armored character.
Couldn’t have said it better myself.
My additional: I’m tired of light sets that are either insanely frilly, 1000% covered and bland, or extraordinarily skimpy. Could I please have a light armor set that has breasts completely covered, be still classy, maybe with a little skimp? Like the Raven Norn Shaman Set or Countess Anise Set or the long elegant dress featured in the Mesmer profession page or…? I’d think I’d buy a set even without a skin locker just to support the cause. Particularly The Countess Anise set or the Mesmer featured set (I don’t have a Norn caster, but I think my human Necromancer would look elegant in the featured Mesmer set and potentially the Countess Anise set – my Sylvari shall only wear leaves and Mesmer Masques >_<).
Again, I’d like skimp in back, arms, midriff and/or legs preferably (and hey, those areas aren’t controversial!).
@GhostLight: It does look amazing on your slim dark blue Sylvari. I LOVE that skin tone for her, that’s a beautiful dark blue. And it does look mystical on her. My beef is basically that it doesn’t look good on anything BUT blue Sylvari :P At least in my opinion. But your char is basically why I’m cool with the set as-is. It works great for some chars.
I’d just really really really like a set that has some coverage on the breasts and isn’t too frilly or too magitech (I want something for my Norn and Sylvari – and RP wise I don’t feel like they fit magitech well or too many frills), something classy like either the Hall of Monuments caster armor or the Raven Norn set or the Countess Anise set or the leafy sets of the Sylvari NPCs or like that Mesmer set in the profession page during the Chaos Storm video or the Mesmer set on the profession page or…….
And I think all these sets would prove to be very popular without being controversial! And they’d work on different races well (ofc, they’d have to adjust for Charr/Asura, but they do that anyway). Yes, I have a Mesmer bias, but all those outfits are AWESOME! And they’d be the first sets I’d even be tempted to buy….
@thaooo: yes, that does sum it up :P
I cannot believe all of the whining I am seeing. If you don’t like it, why should they change it and ruin it for the people that do like it? The nerve of some people…
I seriously hope the devs to do not cave in to the pressure of all of these players who think the world revolves around themselves.
Don’t ruin it for the players who like the armor. I don’t see this kind of complaining on Tera Online or Scarlet Blade :/
I think most who call it too skimpy aren’t saying they should remodel it (they’re just hoping they get something classy in the future, aka Anise’s set or the Shaman sets or the Sylvari NPC sets or..) . the main complaint seems to be whether or not it should be blue or can be dyed. that won’t happen because then they’d allow flesh-tone, which would then be too skimpy for their audience.
No, ingame when I look closely at my own character I can see what they are referring to.
it must be something with the level of graphics you guys are using, on my graphics settings i dont see it at all on the light armor.
Yep, you are all sparkly stars my love, no nippies there.
EDIT: Right? It would end up being the winged set with blue… something. Hey… Speaking of winged armour.. I don’t like how the belly tattoo looks like a uterus and ovaries. CHANGE THIS ANET, RABBLE RABBLE, MUCH SRS, SO ANGER, WOW. (I don’t actually care.)
I think they show with the human bras, also. At least my hubby thought they did.
The main problem with the armor is that, indeed, they made it SO OPEN there, that if someone wore the armor without the blue it would be showing them. At least in a couple of the sets if not all 3. The point is they’ve gone rather far with the skimp in this set and it makes me wonder if they made the blue skin thing so they could get away with it. My beef isn’t with the set in particular, it’s with the general distasteful skimp they use with armor sets (some are excellent – I have mentioned them). It’s like they want us to be wearing lingerie to go fight battles. It’s silly and I have no desire to get any gem set for any of my chars.
@videoboy: it’s too much like flesh. that’s all that matters. Note the x-men character Mystique and how she was perceived.
I’m just a female who wants an armor set to cover the breasts. This set makes Masquerade armor look classy (which I think it looks like a mauled gown).
There isn’t any controversy with the Norn Shaman armors, Countess Anise’s set, and Sylvari NPC sets…. why can’t we get those and armor like them? They’re actually tasteful and stylish.
I did not realize that about the armor. So glad I didn’t waste money on it….
@videoboy, it doesn’t matter whether they are or aren’t: they’re perceived as such by a lot of people including myself
Is painted skin not considered skin? No, it’s considered skin. Same diff.
Norn Shaman armor, Sylvari NPC armor, Norn town clothes, honestly… town clothes and armor…. Countess Anise set….
So far I haven’t seen a set I’d pay for. And, to be honest, they need to be duplicable.
Is it just me foofad, or does it change your character’s “natural” definitions?
Either way, it definitively shows abs and ribs; thus, it’s skin.
The armor bugs me. I feel like I’m looking at a generic goofy character. It does look best on BLUE Sylvari (Not my green/greenish Sylvari).
I just noticed how it has little stars all over it. that’s kinda neat. but why can’t it be like the starry tattoos just implanted in an armor (like the leg thing with the winged set) with more cloth covering the breasts? I’m not saying do that now, just saying for future reference for neat effects…
And yeah, before I thought phoenix was goofy with all the feathers but now it looks classy and awesome in comparison… trickster and viper are good too. but trickster has too much poof for me and viper’s just okay. I would say those three are my favorite gem sets (but they just aren’t good enough for me to buy – my Sylvari Mesmer only wears leaves >_<)
my human necro is perpetually in Hall of Monument armor until something better shows up… my sylvari mesmer is in cultural T2 (LOVE the gloves and feet) and well, my asura ele is well, asura.

Keep in mind, though, the other one was a significant ordeal. IF the other sets had been T3 armor sets, maybe they would have kept the armor set as it was. But it was the only one that was. So they had to be consistent and have them all not be T3 sets (and it was a bit unfair to the humans).
I’d just like some more cultural sets and sets that don’t look as looney. On the positive side, I am so glad ArenaNet hasn’t made a good armor set as it has made me less tempted to spend money in their store…
the odd thing is that all they’d have to do to get me tempted would be to put up any of about 10 different NPC armors…

If Raven were light armor (I have medium and heavy Norn for which I’d buy it in a second), and they sold it, I’d buy a character slot, make a Norn, then buy the armor set… at the very least I would strongly consider that…
I’d really like a branchy one like the oaken armor helm. Obviously different than it, but it would be nice to have a very branchy ’do. Maybe add some leaves in their or vines to the branches? Or even flowerbuds/flowers?
The current Sylvari looks are awesome. Just more and more would be even better!
You have to admit though, it seems that they colored the characters blue so that they could have indecent armors… Personally, I just don’t like how it looks. It just seems…. wrong.
Please, make an armor that is both skimpy and classy. Like http://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/b/be/Norn_Raven_Shaman_render.jpg
(hint, hint)
Note: I’m cool with pretty much anything but breast showing. open backs are awesome (particularly for Sylvari and tatooed Norn, I’d also like it for my Charr gal), open arms are great (particularly for my patterned Sylvari and tatooed Norn, and patterned Charr!), showing legs is great, and feet (why I like the T2 on my Sylvari to show her darker toes), midriff to show rock hard abs (I chose the muscular Norn builds).
Go ahead and keep the armor as-is, but there are major problems with it:
1. It takes away any and all characteristics of your characters – A major problem for female Charr and Asura since they use the male version of the armor. My lady Asura and Charr look like men now.
2. The blue covers up tatoos, Sylvari patterns, Norn Tatoos, Charr stripes, etc.
This armor makes make-over kits and work put into character design worthless…
What you could do instead:
Masques (so that hair shows)
Long gloves (I would love long gloves and no sleeves!)
cool boots (high boots)
elegant dress (with no sleeves and an open back for example to go with the long gloves)
maybe transparent sleeves/veils/leggings instead of opaque covering such that tattoos show?

Coming from a person who plays both Mesmer (primarily) and Ranger. My husband is also an excellent Ranger – and uses the pet to the fullest potential.
A few points regarding Mesmers:
1. Keep in mind that these clones/phantasms are FRAGILE in comparison to other AI.
2. They have a cooldown to respawn.
3. They have a cooldown for only one skill used
4. Often, they only get 1 shot in before either killed or shattered
Regarding Rangers:
1. Pets, particularly bears, can tank if you so desire.
2. You can switch out pets instantaneously (so long as you don’t let them die within 20 seconds).
3. Though their best skill has a long recharge, the pet is using other skills while that skill is cooling down.
4. Related to #3, they will get in a fair amount of hits before they’re either switched out or dead.
Considering the cooldowns for Mesmers and the fragility of their clones/phantasms, they need any extra damage they can get. Whereas with Rangers, the damage over time from the pet is either equal to or greater than that of the Mesmer phantasm.
I normally let my phantasms get one shot off, then shatter them, as the cooldown between skills they use leaves them vulnerable (It is much better for them to be shattered than to die) and myself not doing much damage. I try to reduce my recharge as much as possible so I can have at least 1 out at any particular moment.
In essence though, I think the answer to the OP’s question is basically: Mesmers’ phantasms/clones are that much more fragile.
And also, as someone else mentioned, it’s very useful to have your pets do something else, ie condi damage to support your particular build. Plus, pets are already so OP…. My husband rarely ever goes to defeated state due to his pet…. He commonly carries around a wolf (for fear) and a bear (tank) or a wolf (for fear) and spider (control).
