When was the last time the balance team made any sense?
But about sic’em, it won’t help us one bit. 3-4 second reveal is nothing for a thief they just end up using few dodges and then CnD off our pet again and go on about their business as usual. And the 40 second CD just makes it even more useless.
You’re looking at it thinking of a thief that’s just having a good time full of health and in no trouble at all, how many times haven’t we all fought some thief we just about had dead that went back into hiding a split second before you kill him? that’s when you use this skill.
Sic’em was mainly utilized by beastmaster builds, and those with perma regen already could deal with thieves in the first place.
Well, I often “deal with” thieves in my beastmaster build by just stalemating with them since I cannot prevent them from escaping or resetting the fight as many times as they feel like. It’s a frustrating and time-consuming exercise in waiting/hoping for the thief to make a mistake.
Using Sic ‘em to reduce the thief’s condition removal and initiative regen could make an actual kill significantly more likely.
The problem I have with it is that Sic ’em is still really not very good against any other enemy for a variety of reasons.
I tried playing a BM in wvw with an eagle, ran into a rifle engie, he circled for a good 2-3 minutes until I got bored of that. And before anyone says I should’ve cc-d him I tried with all I could, but it was as effective as trying to stop a hummer with rain.
If you can have a stalemate on your BM against really good thieves, thats as good as you can get. Other builds will have the damage, but due to the thief resetting the fight all the time won’t have enough survivability. I think another skill should give reveal instead of sic’em. A trap would make more sense, and traps can be utilised by many builds even without traiting for it.
Why not sic ‘em and a trap? in any case we won’t be worse off from this addition, I can see it being troublesome for many thieves.
8/10 Beautiful, Rocking a Kudzu! My Kudzu Fires other Kudzus
So I’m back with another :o first I wanna rate yours of course, I like the natural simple look you have cause I usually go for them myself but please take that mask off and go drop it in the deepest fiery chasm of mount maelstrom asap, the mask alone drops you to 6/10.
Here’s my new set, some guildies are teasing me she looks like she has a job in a brothel so I been thinking of getting one of them masks from the gemstore, can’t decide wich though perhaps some of you get leave some input on that?
8/10 nice combination of sets
the colors are a bit dull for me though
~heres mine XD (hope you like her)
You were right it got a little dull but it was also meant to give a natural look, I ended up picking slightly brighter colors of green/brown instead and I like it even more now
the spot I take screenshots at is also dark with that purple light from the crystal so you can’t really see the colors too well but other than that it’s an exellent place for screenies.
Both sets looks great, but I like the WvW color scheme better.
8.7 PvE/ 9.5 WvWThis is mine:
Ok I’m joining this again seeing as I am silly enough to not only have multiple armorsets but also multiple rangers with multiple armors xD
I give you 7/10 it’s a nice looking set overall in my mind and that thief hood looks best on male norns so bonus for this, but the colors are abit boring going almost all white that takes one point second and third you loose are for the shoulders wich I don’t care for at all and that pants don’t match very well with the whispersboots and I’m saying this using that combo myself atm xD
What I would do in your case would be picking darker/black colors or more earthy/green ones similar to the set I have myself below, and also swap to the T3 shoulders wich I also have here, norn cultural armors are fantastic
So here’s my second ranger at my favourite screenie spot in the EB puzzle, posting again since I was so happy with this armor set
8/10 I like the dark colors on Sylvari. Not a boring green/plant color
Totally kickazz 8/10
I have so many sets I don’t really know wich I like best so I guess the next poster will have to give several ratings XD
If it’s for dungeons wouldn’t frost spirit be ooddles better than sic ‘em? and what’s the purpose of 6 dwayna runes if you get regen from the shouts?
If you get immobilized that is the issue right there, lightning reflexes break stuns not immobilizes wich have to be cleansed by a condition cleanse ability or trait.
This is my current power setup: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fMAQNBjYDbkoqvOwSxi1OQsesn93n2jJlJMxKYIA-jEyAYMB5knyaCUQsoWENW9CmqUQWdmUvRR0qBA-w
It’s focused on single target damage, but for a DPS loss, you can switch either Eagle Eye or Spotter for Piercing Arrows.
The reason why 30 in Wilderness is only for Empathic Bond. If rangers ever get a different source of reliable condition removal outside of wilderness, I would run a more glass trait setup, like 30/25/x/x/x or if necessary, 30/20/x/x/x, depending on where the other condi removal trait would be in the traitlines.
If you use lemongrass soup it’s perfectly enough with just signet of renewal if by any chance you were to get totally bombed by several players then empathic bond won’t save you anyway.
Can we use this as a ‘quality of life’ thread for the ranger? Because I’ve got another little quibble I want to bring up yet again..
Attack and Recall should be on the same button. The premise is you send your pet to attack and the game will run through a simple if routine. If the pet is already targetting the target you told it to attack, it will return. If you tell it to attack a target it isn’t already on, it will switch to that target and attack. I’ll even go one better and provide the code if needed since I made the zHunter mod in WoW to do the same thing.
But it really does make controlling the pet much easier, makes it more responsive, and it will free up a hotkey slot so we can maybe get more added functionality in the future.
Allow me to kiss your feet, I used to love that addon <3
Although I agree with the argument of spirits being able to die, not ALL classes have powerful AoE, nor do they have the time to actually kill all these spirits (or even 1) while the ranger does insane damage. You’re basically always “in a pinch” against a spirit ranger if you have to go about killing atleast his Sun Spirit first, then perhaps (if the ranger chooses to use it) the elite spirit so he can’t revive himself.
This also means the ranger always has full control of the fight, considering he can just bash away on the target while the target is desperately struggling to keep up with the spirits (that follow the ranger at 300% speed or something).
I’m not sure any class in this game has less AE than a ranger. And also keep in mind that the insane damage you speak of is still condition damag which leads us back to the issue being predominately a condition problem (as every condition class right now is overpowered beyond belief) and not a ranger specific one.
Condi builds are not OP, they’re just really good against Direct Damage builds, you know those things that -were- the meta? And you know what’s really good against every condi build that uses rabid or shamans gear? Condi builds that have a lot of vitality, or condi removal(or better yet transfer). But you know what has little issue against those sorts of condi builds? Direct Damage….
See where this is going? The only problem is the vast majority of players are too lame to actual figure anything out for themselves and need to follow everyone else.
Oh did I mention there’s bunker builds that make condi builds useless? Yeah those are fun to play atm.
Go ask on the Warrior forum what they feel is the most trollish build they know. They’ll tell you the 40k HP, 1.5khp/sec build that can still dish out high sustained damage. Ask them what their worst match up is. They’ll all say Condi Ranger. Why the Ranger over the necro or engineer? Because of the regen.
It’s not too much to ask for power builds to have a place in the current meta. I’d much rather they fix the root problem (condis) than try and tackle class issues individually.
I’ve fought that warrior build a few times and I can’t find a way to break it, it just has so much HP, Armor, and regen it’s ridiculous, I’ve yet to see a good player say the ranger one is OP though, perma poison is simple enough of a counter to it, not to mention it takes them forever and a half to kill ANYTHING that’s not made of tissue paper. The warrior build does not have that flaw either…
I’ve recently leveled one of them warriors up and by cheer accident more or less this is the build I ended up with cause I always build my characters to survive first, it’s ridiculously strong and if I come across a ranger on my warrior as noobish as I am with it they are basically free kills, I would say if one does cause some trouble it would be one that is very good with a longbow because the stealth combined with knockback is really the only thing that can keep me from stunning him to death.
I only just tried this arena thing today, so far I lasted 1s, 2s, 1s and 1s on this fight, I can’t see what’s happening at all only that something invisible oneshots me and something else that is also invisible knocks me down…
It was obviously too powerful if our enemies could just use our mechanics against us with no cooldown, you people are just never happy this is a ranger buff!
So tel me, is that the TOTAL health or basic health then we add vitality ?
I’d imagine that’s total, since health is (if I’m correct) based entirely off vitality IE: Necro will have more base vitality than a thief or ranger.
It has to be base health figures, so add another 3000health for a full BM pet ontop of that.
It’s not just melee like I saw mentioned, certain mobs will always aggro a ranged attacker first if there is one too.
I wan’t to try to avoid trying them both because I don’t have a huge amount of Badges of Honor at the moment =D
But I think I’ll try the Settlers one first.
You can use either build with settlers or apothecary (or mixed) it’s not going to have a huge impact but settlers is better for both in my opinion, I’m pretty sure Faux is only using full apothecary in his build link because settlers didn’t exist when he made it.
I was playing with my settlers armor yesterday in wvw and had alot of fun and tons of duels in the puzzle aswell I’d almost forgotten how increadibly tanky this gear makes you barely anyone could scratch me and most would melt to the conditions very fast.
The only big trouble I ran into was one elem I couldn’t pressure enough although she didn’t even scratch me either it ended in a stalemate until I got tired swapped to full berserker and blew her up her in a split second, the other one was a warrior who I simply couldn’t beat with this I was using mango pies first and he killed me relatively fast the first 2 duels cause I screwed up and got rooted so many times I just couldn’t survive the burst he had after switching to poultry soup it got much better as he couldn’t keep me rooted very long when I failed to dodge properly and I did get him in the 5%health area more than a dozen times in a duel lasting over 10minutes before it got interupted by a kittenhead thief >.< however his unstoppable mobility made it impossible to finish him off it was increadibly aggravating, I did end up beating him in my powerbuild using knights, cavalier and boonstacking though using sword+warhorn and shortbow it was the best way to deal with him I found although by no means a sure win it was very close and any mistake could spell doom.
(edited by Manekk.6981)
Why not just try them both and see wich one feels best I will say this though going with settlers instead of apothecary is almost certainly better regardless of wich build you pick, the healing power will be plenty anyway and getting higher armor to mitigate any spike damage you cannot avoid is pure win here.
New look! I decided to name it “The Hornet” it’s not fully finished actually but I’ll post it anyway what I mean to change is the gloves for the CM ones and in my dreams it’s with the baroque mask instead of this one (wich I should have hid so you could look at my pretty face :o) but alas I’m not a gw1 player so that’s all it’ll ever be, dreams…
Shortbow is my main weapon I would say, been trying very hard to like longbow after the recent buffs to it, trying to see how much I can make use of that stealth but I just can’t the weapon is completely useless unless you have the protection of others and can safely snipe with it in my opinion there are of course some specific niche uses on it for lack of a better word but in the end I find you’ll simply be less effective than with any other weaponset at our disposal so I went back to using mostly the shortbow.
I do miss the range on shortbow though very often you find people able to disengage from you without being able to do much about it.
I was able to solo T4 Evon as a full zerker with longbow and Eagle Eye for max range.
It was actually easier than in a group as the groups I tried it with kept running forward and aggroing the mobs and getting killed.
The name of the game is to kill the plunderers while not aggroing the mobs. So if you stay on the left side of the beach at first, and use wolf and dog for their knockdown effect, you can stop and kill the runners before they get too far. After each kill switch to the other pet to get a pet with a fresh knockdown. Also switch pets and run away if you or the pet aggro the mobs. If the runners do slip away the longbow’s range can be very helpful in downing them on the way out or back in.
You can pretty much ignore the mortar guys unless you chase too far. If you are getting hit by them you are definitely further out then you should be.
Contrary to what many have said, there will be plunderers running on the right side even if you solo so you also have to take them out.
I did this solo too and I agree it was much easier than in a group, I found the best setup was using shortbow/sword+axe using axe to pull them back and shortbow to stun I failed a few times because I let my pet run after them and he actually aggroed the extra mobs but after putting him on passive and only allowing him to attack at the spawn it was relatively easy.
I also killed the first couple of mortar guys using drake he and his mortar goes down almost instantly with the lightning bounce I have 0 BM now also so anyone can do that with drake, but you probably can just ignore them like you say on the other hand the first spawns you’ll just stand there though so might aswell kill him.
(edited by Manekk.6981)
Your canine actually does sniff him out as does every pet, when you initiate the fight make sure you don’t let your pet just engage automatically because you start attacking but send him in with F1 command doing so will make your pet always stick on the real mesmer aslong as he isn’t stealthed, stealth will not break this command either your pet might start chewing on a clone if he goes invisible but as soon as he comes back your pet will switch back to the real one.
lol Plus 100! at the end of the day i think rangers are becoming a hard counter to thieves and they are getting a little nervous. I havent Died to a thief since back when i ran the condi-gen313.
that really made my morning….lol
I would say the thief is the hard counter for rangers rather.
If you are being killed by a thief in a 1v1 environment. adjustments need to be made. We are a thieves nightmare. i cant tell you how many ive had just run away in frustration or sit in their body after ive spiked them wondering what just happened.
Why are we a thief’s nightmare? I’m enclined to state the opposite we are good at outliving most others in a 1v1 good access to boons and high armor etc, thieves can strip the boons however and if necessary always reset the fight if they make a mistake and wait us out til all CDs have been blown and heals used up they can easily burst down a bunker ranger if they know what they are doing there are many variations of thief of course but in general I’d say good thief > good ranger.
I can tell you I beat and kill 99% of all players I run into 1v1 including thieves, all classes can be tough if the player is good however only a few times have I had to concede I simply stand no chance and it’s usually a thief, I met one today and he was cutting through my 3400armor like it was paper without being the slightest bit glassy I don’t think many rangers would have done much better to be honest.

Personally, I like these skills. I don’t wish them to be removed.
I wouldn’t mind seeing downed state go away though. I hate it.
No the opposite today actually, not spvp but in wvw, kept getting pwned by a thief over and over was very disheartening cause even though I always felt they are the toughest class to beat most are very bad and even the good ones I usually feel I have a chance to beat not this time he was clever was only a few times I got him low on health at all and he’d retreat into stealth among the minotaurs or other mobs several times wich all aggro on me instead and I willingly followed into his trap cause he already had me so angry for revenge lol.
What I love about the Warhorn 4 is that you don’t need LOS to hit people with it :p Always love killing those downed eles who run into towers from behind the gate.
Uhm yes you do, if you thought you were killing people that broke LOS with warhorn then i can inform you someone else did.
I was killed on my ranger today under water because I got a permanent root wich is a very common bug in water downed state for ranger if you accidentally touch anything, today it happened in the middle of the water aswell, very few things are working very well under water I would say though that ranger downed state damage under water is far worse than the petheal because it is just ridiculously high damage for a downed state and as for the petheal you can usually kill the ranger before the heal even becomes avalible if you can’t do this with 3 people then you are doing somethig seriously wrong.
I believe it’s any attack same thing for hunter’s call.
If I could really have my way though I’d make it just 1 hit instead of 16 and replace the hawks with a pterodactyl that flies up with my enemy in it’s talons and drops them from a certain death height it would also have a splat animation with twisted broken legs and blood as result
Or replace the birds with frogs … make it rain 16 frogs from the sky … thus, making the ground slippery and slowing target.
Aaah my dear Pendelton you are way too modest in your requests, giant frogs yes giant frogs exploding on your victim as they land cause both knockdown and slippery green goo cripple and vomiting
If I could really have my way though I’d make it just 1 hit instead of 16 and replace the hawks with a pterodactyl that flies up with my enemy in it’s talons and drops them from a certain death height it would also have a splat animation with twisted broken legs and blood as result
I think skirmishing is still way better, but there have been some improvements to several traits in the marksman line making it a much better option now.
An elephant or a mammoth, F2 would be trample anything and everything in it’s path with kitten knockdown for the few that survives this massive hitting 100% crit skill, that’s right were going blobhunting baby!
I always thought this skill should give a blind, it makes total sense to me, being swarmed by freaking hawks clawing at your eyes of course you’ll have trouble seeing.
I honestly don’t see the point of giving stealth to Hunter’s Shot. IMO, it would be perfect for the shortbow after the range nerf, but the longbow is meant to be used at very long range, where it’s easier to avoid ranged attacks, and it already has a counter against melee attacks in Point Blank Shot.
I’ve been trying to point this out but people keep shouting me down otherwise.
It’s a longbow. You should be at quite a bit of range. We basically lost DPS for slight utility that honestly doesn’t even do that much good. I’m aware you can stealth+rez but you will not get the rez off in time and the dps loss IS NOT WORTH IT.
O.o
epicjesusfacepalm
omfg this made me laugh so hard hahahahaaha!
Rapid Fire just needs a flat out increase in damage. It’s a 4.5 sec channel that does less damage than the autoattack at long range. For a 4.5 sec channel it’s also pretty bad damage compared to other channeled skills.
Ssssssssh saying things like this will make them nerf the autoattack to make rapid fire appear more attractive. :P
So how many tears will fall from 100% crit mauls executed from stealth after this goes live? I predict rivers :o
The thieves will drown in their own tears!! This is going to be amazing!! It’ll be like playing Teemo in League of Legends >=D
Thieves already started a topic on ranger stealth.
Wouldn’t that be the ultimate irony if thieves end up complaining nonstop about ranger being OP because of stealth XD
So how many tears will fall from 100% crit mauls executed from stealth after this goes live? I predict rivers :o
I think it’s an absolute terrible idea the thought of buying my petskins makes me cringe, add rare pets in the open world instead make them bloody hard to find too and make me hunt that kitten down for months until he’s mine not only that make him champion level and force me to solo him before taming is possible.
I want it that way and afterwards I can love him forever.
That sounds good and all but that’s too much expansion for just one class, leaving all the other classes with the short end of the stick. I think skins would be a perfect implementation because it’s purely cosmetic and wouldn’t change the dynamics of the game; let’s say they were only for PvE so it doesn’t confuse PvP players as to which pet you are using.
no no no, horrible horrible idea it’s the worst crap I ever heard, buying pets? really you want to buy your pets in the gemstore? no offence but wtf is wrong with you people?
You don’t have to buy them, they’re just cosmetic. If it would bother you that much just don’t buy them, and the people who would want them could get them. I would love for them to be free but just like all other skins in the BLTP, ANet is gonna sell them to make profit to help keep the game running that’s how these things work.
Still a horribly bad idea, there’s a multitude of things they could and are selling there that would feel natural pet skins is not one of them.

No actually I can do whatever I want in wvw and you or anyone else are not allowed or able to tell me how to play the game, I do not expect to have any huge impact when I roam but I constantly take camps and if I run into a few friends towers aswell so it is contributing not to mention scouting is also a very important part of wvw, besides alot of players can’t even get near the huge blobs without lagging so hard their computers are smoking are you saying they shouldn’t be allowed to play at all then if there is a diffrent mode that works for them?
I’m new to ranger and have never liked being focused on pets (EG: I use a spectral power necro instead of minionmancer.) is there a build that uses great sword that doesn’t rely on pets, it is nice to have the pet for sure because it is added damage and is fun to have that extra threat besides just your character, but I don’t want to be totally dependent on it for my gameplay.
WARNING: This build will make you lazy and will cause EVERY thief you encounter to RAGE and just about every other profession to hightail it as far as possible away from you. As long as you learn to predict incoming burst you won’t get killed by any single player. When you die, it will be from multiple players and because they chained immobilise on you.
with this build you are just a victim for any 0 0 30 30 10 condition/shout ranger. i can take on 2 power rangers at once easily
I wouldn’t say just a victim it might be he doesn’t have enough critburst to kill one very easily but he’s got 4 condition cleanses every 10s and plenty of dodges so that door swings both ways, besides how many such rangers does one run into while roaming? I can say that I haven’t met a single ranger with this shout bunker spec while roaming.
I never played a hunter until cata, I got one to 20 and all my lv 50 (or what ever lv cap was in vanilla) told me Hunters never get groups and I should play a Druid because I’ll get in groups and it’s still naturey…. Wish I were a hunter…
Hunter, Ranger, Archer, Beastmaster, I don’t care what they call them it’s always where it’s at
I think it’s an absolute terrible idea the thought of buying my petskins makes me cringe, add rare pets in the open world instead make them bloody hard to find too and make me hunt that kitten down for months until he’s mine not only that make him champion level and force me to solo him before taming is possible.

Omg… It’ll be like finding a baby krait dragon (it wasn’t them, but it looked like them) or rancor all over again…. MAKE IT HAPPEN ANET!!
I hunted all the rare pets in WoW one of my favourite things to do in that game especially early on when they were truly rare and had individual skills and attack speeds and whatnot the lack of good guides and how the petmechanic worked then really made it a hard task too cause not only were they hard to find you had to leave your current pet at a stable and go alone to tame a new one if my memory serves me right.
edit: I just recalled you had to bring a “garbage pet” that you could set free once you found a keeper that’s how it was done, and you also had to use the pets you tamed to learn their skills and each rank of each skill to be able to pass it on to other pets otherwise you’d be left with a rank1 lowbie attack on your high lvl pets, kitten you had to work hard for it then
and yet I didn’t dislike it one bit I hate how it was simplified later on.
(edited by Manekk.6981)
I’ll add my own uninformed opinion too, I don’t know what’s new with necros since the patch but I haven’t really noticed much diffrence, they are like engineers to me get to close and something will go “zoom” and instantly kill you but keep your distance they will die almost everytime.
That’s them throwing all their marks right at their feet and then fearing you lol, in absolute worst case scenario you get hit by all their marks twice because they behave similarly to traps.
That might be it, it’s often hard to know what killed you when you don’t play all other classes beyond lvl 10 alts and it angers me to rage sometimes how useless the combat log is barely anything show up in it sometimes, only yesterday or the day before I got pretty much instagibbed by a small pack of other roamers and tried looking in the combat log because there wasn’t really anything visible that could have killed me so fast and sure enough total damage it had recorded was like 1795 lol I mean wtf! also add my bloody pet in there so I can see what the ashhole is doing! >.<

Some more, enjoy my look fellas’
Aside from the ugly ant helm it looks good you should consider whispers hood/mask or inquest hood/mask I think it would look good on you.
