Ranger was buffed considerably, but there are a few key skills that are bugged ATM. Namely Healing Spring and Light on Your Feet.
Healing Spring is very buggy, chief among them is that it isn’t healing the pet. We’re not getting the complete duration of LOYF, we’re missing a second.
Most Dangerous Game didn’t deliver on the hype, needs a buff. Otherwise? We got some love this last patch.
It’s a step in the right direction.
I don’t know if you can say ranger was OMGWTFBBQ SUPER BUFF NEW RANGER META 2015 compared to everyone else, but we weren’t nerfed by any means.
People saying we were nerfed are silly.
basically yeah
fix the bugged stuff (add in lightning reflexes + Wilderness knowledge there)
but at the same time, since pet drags you into combat, it either needs to be mroe durable to survive mass combat, or have better AI (or. let use stow the useless thing during stealth missions)
=/
I love stowing my pet during pvp. Especially in Foe Fire. But that is mainly so I can set up ambushes.
I don’t have a problem with Lifesteal as it currently stands, but, then again, I stopped running Vampiric Wells for Transfusion, which is a much stronger trait in group play, IMHO, especially when you run healing power (I run Zealots)
With all the over-use of CCs in some places, over-use of insta-gibs in others, there is just no incentive to run a tank or a healer. You have nothing to gain and a lot to lose.
GW2 will never, without very significant changes, support Trinity play, nor should it.
Tens of thousands of players, like myself, would run to the hills if strong Trinity was implemented.
I don’t think that anyone is arguing for a strong trinity. I would love a weak trinity where supportive play (damage mitigation, buffs, debuffs, control, etc) is actually a rewarding experience, instead of just a weight on your group’s speed run.
Silverwastes is actually a pretty good example of this in the live game. I love playing it on my zerker longbow ranger, but I also enjoy keeping people at high(ish) health and condi-free on my support shout warrior and pumping out heal/bringing people up on my Bloodmagic Necromancer… and it actually is helpful to the group and is somewhat necessary.

I’m always baffled by these “Rangers were nerfed!” threads. My power build’s one real weakness (lack of condi cleanse) was completely removed with the patch (now all of my survival skills remove 2 conditions!). The fact that Quickening Zephyr now gives you superspeed instead of gimping your healing was just icing on the cake for me.
They essentially wanted to lock you out of your Guild Bank because they clone your account when you make a revenant. That way you can spend 6k Laurels on T6 mats and Ascended stuff for your Revenant, and you can’t stash them in the guild bank to take back to your main account and still have 6k laurels.
Kind of ham-handed, but I get what they’re getting at.
Zerker armor should be a high-risk, high-reward proposition. The Reward has always been there, but the risk never has been.
Hopefully, the Expansion will fix that somewhat.
I think they should just retool the Soften the Fall trait. Change it to:
Reduce falling damage by 50%. While falling, skin a pet and lay the fur as a rug under you. Pose seductively on your bear skin rug, stunning nearby enemies.
Can’t lose!
I roam on my Ranger (T2), and I don’t usually have any problems. Granted, my build has 2 stunbreaks, signet of stone, and the ability to cleanse 8 conditions, so there’s that.
A bit of a disclaimer: I am pretty new to the Necromancer. I just started playing this guy after the specialization patch, but I think I’ve found a good build—it certainly is fun and “feels” powerful.
The boilerplate description is a Front-line dps/support hybrid build. It pushes out a great deal of damage and provides some solid group support (not to mention some crazy sustain), mostly in the form of healing and debuffing enemies. During long fights with lots of enemies (I’ve mainly been playing this in Silverwastes and small-group WvWvW), I can consistently maintain 15-25 stacks of might, which allowed me to be a little more selfish and add some toughness to my gear. Transfusion trait and Water Sigil provides some group healing (Especially the teleporting aspect of Transfusion)
So, that’s the build. More experienced Necro Players, please let me know what you think and what I should change.
Some changes I’m already considering:
I would personally love to see a ranger as skirmisher with off-hand shield.
The shield itself would have blocks/deflects (duh), but perhaps with a mobility angle that isn’t present in other shield-using professions (Example: if a melee attack is blocked, move behind attacker and cripple, etc), and it could gain Physical abilities from the warrior.
The idea is a physical, melee playstyle that is a middle-ground between the raw physicality of the warrior and the high-mobility style of melee Ranger/Thief.
My understanding is that it was billed as a possibility during the unveiling and they decided not to implement it. It’s cool in theory, but having auto-attacks apply bleed and vulnerability with a chance to proc an additional aoe bleed and cripple would probably be too strong (especially when taken with the first minor in Firearms)
I feel much more free to experiment with builds now, seeing as I don’t have to do random errands or dump gold to get traits anymore.
Right now I’m playing around with a Dire/Rabid, P/P, Flamethrower, Gadgets (Firearms, Inventions, Tools) build that is a whole lot of fun in the Silverwastes, and I probably wouldn’t have tried something so gimmicky pre-patch. (http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=VZ;4cPVv026JRFx0;9;4jkm;0236157138;4Ow;4jxqQjxqQl-kicA;6f1A4f6A9fBf0-WWk7ec — I use AED, but that skill doesn’t seem to be on this site)
(edited by MattyP.6954)
Ironically, my only ascended weapon came from a “World Chest” when ranking up. It was Sentinel stats, but it goes pretty well with my frontline support warrior.
I don’t think that badges are useless, but I would like to be able to buy gear with more stat combos. The hoops you have to jump through to get certain stat combos for exotic gear is just ridiculous (looking at you, Zealot’s)
I’m sorry. Would you like a cookie?
Not sure if this has already been addressed (only so many ragey forum posts I can read before my eyes cross), but all indications is that difficulty will go up, not down, with HoT.
I´m currently playing a condi engi specced on explosives, fireguns and tools. I like the idea of a huge range weapon with useful field but I´ve got lots of questions.
-Does mortar #1 have to pass through an enemy in order to aply the combo (for example if I fire it through a poison field i will have to go though the poison field and the one I want to poison BEFORE it explodes) or it will ilnflict the combo results on all targets on explosion radius?
- When i fire mortar #1 through the elixir water field it does say “rejuvenation” but i gain nothing. Is there something I´m doing wrong?
-What do you ehink is a better optionfor the explosives gm, the one enhacing mortar or the one making random bleeds on explosions? I carri elixir gun, tool kit, flamethrower, mortar and pistol/shield.
Could you guys help me please?
Answers to your questions in order:
Edit: Shouldn’t “Rejuvenation” be “Regeneration”? Whatever, I’ll use the terms in the OP.
As soon as EotM opened, if an uplevel appeared in other WvW maps, everyone screamed at the uplevels to go to EotM. EotM IS the community-driven uplevel spot.
If you are solo-ganking uplevels, you aren’t the kind of person to give a crap and deserve exactly all the hater tells and email. If you want solo PvP, WvW is not the place for it. You can queue for PvP matches and still jump into WvW when you the queue pops.
That being said, EotM is fundamentally a poor place to build a WvW community from since it is essentially a biggest-zerg-always-wins mentality and you are mixing many servers on to one side. EotM was also supposed to be a playing ground of new WvW mechanics (hello, removing/changing WvW levels and impact) before it went to full WvW so ANet could test the impact.
So many things wrong with EotM but it’s driven by the community (or the individual) players for the most part.
Nobody deserves a death-free leveling experience in a PvP Environment. I mean, imagine if Anet got hatemail for monsters attacking low-level players in PvE.
If you poke around in EotM as an uplevel, expect to die occasionally. If you play WvWvW at all, expect to die occasionally. This is a PvP game mode, not Hello Kitty Island Adventures.
So, That_Shaman just tweeted a render of throwing knives and a satchel for them from the .dat file
So… could Thieves be getting Kits in HoT?
So, That_Shaman just tweeted this:
Throwing knives and a pouch to carry them in.
Friggin shot in the dark, but… Thief Kits?
This is what I use for PvE and WvW (I usually only SW in PvE now). I get some absurd condi, but I’m not totally sure if that’s due to the grenade bug.
Yes, I’m too lazy to carry around multiple sets of armor :P
Just curious – everyone is assuming this is the art for the elite specialization. There were two pictures that are not currently in use for the thief:
http://i.imgur.com/xA8qvVk.png
AND
http://i.imgur.com/rNAy4Jb.pngOne would be for the new trait line and the other the accompanying new skill type. I’m not certain which is which because we’re missing important context.
I hope that ANet does not introduce a new class with a melee staff AND add staff as the specialization weapon to two other existing classes although its quite possible they will.
I always figured that that second picture was a couple of Rangers. Seems like a scouty-trackery type sort of thing.
I don’t have a lot of experience with Axe or Warhorn at level 80, but I can’t stop singing the praises of Greatsword. It’s actually a really versatile weapon (Evade on AA Chain, Burst on a relatively short cooldown, a gap-closer/escape, a block/ranged cc, and a stun). Way more defensive, and that helps when a thief or medi guardian hops into melee range.
Here’s a wishlist version of mine (don’t have ascended armor). I like the traits though.
First of all. Adapt or Die :-)
Secondly, you seem to be saying that the patch makes buildcrafting harder, but then you say that it is “Care-Bearing” the system. I mean, it can’t be both.
GW2 has been trying for a long time, unsuccessfully (imho), to make the trait system less of a clusterkitten. I think they finally got it right with this patch (I don’t have to do random PvE nonsense or spend gold to unlock traits? Awesome!).
As for completely relearning your entire play style… really? I mean… you have to pick new traits, but relearning everything? You’re being a little hyperbolic there.
Then again, this is the internet.
Personally, I would like to see more engineer-oriented back pieces in the gem store. Just a thought.
-How me how 14k in 2 attacks is weak.
-Here’s a lulz thief’s completely OP Backstab!
-.-
Had a good laugh.
1) The only thing you bring to your zerg is your sustained low dps which just got nerfed more than 20%. Yes very useful indeed.
HighAverage sustain range pressure. You know engi outclass ranger in this aspect now? Mortar kit autos hit harder and faster than longbow autos and is aoe (vs piercing), can aoe chill (vs cripple), but there’s also burn poison and heal and f5 burst. The only thing left in a ranger’s kitten nal is rapid fire, once again its damage nerfed, but an engi has toolkit, rifle etc. which bring a lot more versatility to the class. And erm, why the mention of spotter like it matters a lot?The bottom line is, whatever a ranger can do in a zerg, others can do better. But you still think you are “useful”.
2) Go find me a thread that says rangers are OP in wvw zerg.
3) I don’t know what’s the point of saying so much when there are 0 rangers in competitive pvp.
I think you should stop writing.
Wait… Mortar Autos hit faster than Longbow? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Boy you must be crazy.
Also, comparing an [elite] AoE weapon kit to a single-target weapon is beyond silly.
Go home. You’re Drunk. :-)
- Rangers are so weak!
This is hilarious considering how many “Rangers are OP!” threads there are in the WvW subforum. It can’t be both! Is it safe to assume that we’re somewhere in the middle?
Actually, I think it can be both. Ranger is extremely powerful against poor players and they are the ones that are always crying OP on the forums. Against a good player, the Ranger is fairly weak, comparatively. Some really good players play Ranger though and they make the rest of us look better.
I don’t know that ranger is generally weak against good players. Every class and build has effective play and counter-play, but I’ve been able to duel 1v1 people of most classes that I wouldn’t call “bad” (I still have trouble with Mesmers, because their burst is absurd atm), and I run a zerker LB/GS build. If anything, I think Rangers fall into the “easy to learn, difficult to master” category. It has a relatively low skill floor in that it has a straight forward class mechanic and not a lot of nuance to low-level play (unlike, say, Engineer or Mesmer), but to be competitive at against opponents who have learned their class fully, you have to be better at Ranger.
Like I’ve said, I have successfully dueled bursty backstab Thieves and Medi Guardians with my LB/GS Zerker Ranger build, it’s not an impossible task. You just have to preempt the burst.
Edit: Just a note, if you see a thief go into stealth while running towards you, I usually count slowly to 5 and then hit GS4. It’s completely absurd how well that counters most backstabs I get.
Edit Edit: It’s even funnier to hit Shield5 on an Engineer using the same count strategy. Oh the rage I get…
(edited by MattyP.6954)
For me, I’m taking Vit over toughness (though I am also focusing on avoidance, rather than soaking the damage). Also, some of the zerker stat trinkets have vit, so there’s that.
I think that all of the QQing about Mortars is making a few faulty assumptions:
Look, don’t camp in Mortar. I’ve been running a full Explosions Condition Engineer (Dire/Rabid, P/S, Med Kit, Bomb Kit, Slick Shoes, Mortar), and Mortar has been really, really nice. I hop into Mortar when enemies are at range, drop some fields (helpful at pressuring WvW zergs to stay back), switch to Grenades when fields are on CD and proc a ton of bleeds and burning, switch to Bombs when I’m in melee, and rotate kits accordingly.
The multiple hit explosions proc bleeds, burning, and vuln, provide combo fields I can blast, give me a valuable ranged support option when I see people that need my help but are unreachable, and gives me a guaranteed projectile finisher on the 1 skill (which is not an auto attack).
So please, don’t whine that the weapon is underpowered because it doesn’t do what you personally want it to do. It’s incredibly powerful in it’s niche.
Here are some issues I don’t quite get that have been trotted out in this thread:
This is akin to saying that any dps class that doesn’t run heals, fields, condi cleanse or boons is useless in a zerg. This actually isn’t true, especially when you consider that, at it’s core, being a good zergling entails 1.) sustaining DPS and 2.) not dying. Rangers are pretty good at both, if I don’t mind saying so myself.
As for the “useless backliner” comment… wha??? How is providing high sustained ranged pressure “useless”? Also, I see you conveniently ignored a pretty potent AoE Cripple, as well as a trait you can take to automatically cripple foes under a health threshold. Useless my kitten … Oh yeah, and Spotter.
This is hilarious considering how many “Rangers are OP!” threads there are in the WvW subforum. It can’t be both! Is it safe to assume that we’re somewhere in the middle?
Sample size of one here, but this has not been my experience. In fact, I’ve been able to 1v1 Guardians, Mesmers, Thieves, Elementalists… etc, as well as +1 down Lich Form Necromancers and Rampage Warriors. Post Patch, it’s been my winningest class in PvP.
In fact, my build’s biggest weakness (a lack of Condi Clear) was completely fixed by the patch.
I got bored of writing this. Honestly, if you think that Ranger sucks now, either don’t play it or learn to play.
Do you have any traits that affect precision or crit chance?
I don’t think the balance issues with rifle and stealth are insurmountable, just have powerful rifle skills inflict 5-10 seconds of Revealed on the caster.
I HAVE FOUND A SOLUTION! A fight with Mordy at the end that leaves him mortally wounded, but alive. Then a few episodes into LW S3 we finally kill him, and the rest of the season is cleanup until another ED makes a move. Then LW S4 then next expansion!!
I’d rather kill corrupted Trahearne (not sure how to spell his name, lol) than wound a dragon. That being said, if he’s mortally wounded, he gonna die by definition—no second fight needed :-)
My guess is still that Thief gets Rifle. Druid is already getting staff, and I don’t think Anet would give multiple Elite Specializations the same new weapon this go around.
I would have agreed with you, until I saw the datamined images (possible thief elite spec image & ascended staff ([&AgFgEQEAAA==])) by that_shaman.
Now I am not so sure.
That is pretty compelling, though I have to note that if that’s concept art, they could be keeping it in their back pocket for a future release. That being said, either might actually inspire me to make a Thief.
I played around with into the mists with it (I play conditions myself, but find support engineers to be very interesting), and here is what I got http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=-Z;4sP-9-f6cQFx0;9;4ikl;0158048258;4ZV;4QudbTudbO-klkM;4VPVUWZXdYj3p4HaV8F0Jp
I’d like to think that it would have some nice synergies and would output a lot of healing. Thoughts?
Meh, even with the 3 target cap, I still consistently get Bleed Ticks doing more than 3k damage. I’ll live
I don’t have an issue triggering this trait on demand. I usually use it defensively to get double melee range Grenade Barrage, Big ole Bomb, or double Heals (I run med kit because it synergizes so well with Tools traits, with the primary heal being on the tool belt and everything).
It would be really hard to pull off in an offensive manner (but I have used it for double orbital barrage, which is some nice burst), but it’s on dodge, so it makes sense that it would be easier used defensively.
Don’t abilities that count as multiple hits (sword flurry, etc) counter blind-spam pretty well?
I run this (http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=V40;4IkI0G4-K-w2;9;497A;0256157246;4KZF4J;1wl6Uwl6UO0kTc6uWA0;1KeK9LeL9MeM97k0RN5a0e), and it has been really durable in the Silverwastes. I can usually survive in melee range against Copper, sitting on the gate during Fort Defense events, and going melee against Champs.
That being said, I’m pretty balanced between Death Shroud and not Death Shroud (though I mainly use it for a stunbreak). The build is focused on landing tons of little hits and triggering as many bleeds as possible (I get healed by the condi damage and it procs Vampiric Signet).
I have had some limited success with it in WvWvW, but that’s mainly with trolling groups and out-surviving them, not necessarily by doing damage or bursting anyone down.
Edit: I am brand new to necro, so if this build is completely stupid please let me know :-)
My guess is still that Thief gets Rifle. Druid is already getting staff, and I don’t think Anet would give multiple Elite Specializations the same new weapon this go around.
How to beat Slick Shoes: Quick Reflexes + LB4/Entangle.
You still have other people fucusing you bashing.
Ranger is not a burst class; it is a sustained DPS class. Of course Thief beats Ranger in the burst game, but if Thief burst fails, they’re screwed. If we can avoid damage (which the Survival line, as an example, gives us multiple ways of accomplishing), we can beat a lot of burst classes with attrition.
I was talking about group fights, organized teams etc, not 1v1.
However, if you have to burst, might I recommend (while running towards your target) LB2, Quickening Zephyr (while LB2 is casting), LB4, GS3, GS2, Signet of Stone. On my build, that’s about 13k damage in a relatively short amount of time.
Kinda weird rotation, since random dodge on opening will screw you a bit. Usualy opening with LB4 is better idea, so you can land entire RF on target -> switch to GS -> Entangle -> Daze/Stun -> Maul -> Daze/Stun (quickdraw) -> Taunt -> another pet CC etc…
Blowing everything, going into meele just do be close to Steal+Backstab+AA damage wise is like a joke. Our entire chain will do less than what Mesmer can do in 2s. We can hope that Thief/Mesmer damage will be nerfed, however we will still require alot of tweaks for our supportive things like Traps/Spirits, since damage isn’t everything, you rarely pick a class to just do damage.Zephyr isn’t a dodge, it’s Haste + Superspeed. A Rapid Fire with Haste is pretty hard to mitigate, esp. with Lead the Wind. It’s as close to true burst as Rangers get (like I said, Rangers are better suited for sustained pressure).
So the rotation would be Hasted Rapid Fire, KnockDown (though Taunt on Pet skill works for this too), Gap Close, Maul (with always crits with Sigil of Intelligence), then Signet of Stone to mitigate the damage you subject yourself to. I am usually cool to sit there until I secure the kill, then I can Quick Reflexes my way out to open the gap and clear CC and LB3 to escape.
I know what QZ does. It doesn’t stop enemy from dodging, blocking, evading, it even makes evading easier since you need only to dodge it once (instead of twice without QZ) ;-)
Yeah, I replied to this in an edit. The key is a.) making sure they’ve exhausted their dodges and b.) making sure that they’re not paying attention to you at the start.
Ranger is not a burst class; it is a sustained DPS class.
Always found this comical since an Anet Dev said it because every class has “sustained DPS” … It’s called auto-attack lol
Just some classes have great burst in addition to “sustained DPS”.
If you look at the damage output for every profession against the time of an engagement, some (like Thieves and most Power Burst builds) are very front-loaded—meaning they dump a ton of damage then they run away/restealth/wait for their cooldowns. Power Rangers have a flatter damage curve. That is what I mean by Sustained DPS. If you think that sitting around mashing 1 is ever going to be optimal, I would love to meet you on the Eternal Battlegrounds :-).

Edit: Sorry, misread your comment re: dodging. When starting this rotation, I usually check to make sure that dodges have been exhausted (all Rangers should do this before wasting an LB2). Granted, since the LB2 will be subject to Haste, it’ll be a lot harder to actively dodge. Opening with LB4 would alert them to your presence so they can ready a utility dodge for your RF.

I am by far an expert Necro (started playing with mine after the patch), though I built a fun to use Condition/Sustain necro that is really useful in the Silverwastes (particularly when you have lots of enemies surrounding you, like in Copper or during a Fort Attack.
Also, let me know if this build is completely insane and/or incompetent. Like I said, I’m brand new at playing a Necro, and just wanted to commit to a gimmick. That being said, it’s working pretty well for what I use it for.
Padapwn.5924
I’m asking about ‘support’ and you write about ‘insane burst’ when this ‘insane burst’:
-> deals less damage than Backstab, which can be just follow-up attack to Steal (since Steal gives Stealth if Thief has Shadow Arts).
-> is like 1/3 of Shatter bomb damage, which takes less time than Rapid Fire…You believe that Ranger does well when pressured in TFs? What does mean pressured in TF means for you? Since for me it’s CC+damage, from more than one person.
-> All you can do is launch your Singet, switch to GS -> Block (quickdraw), try to leap away and Block… however since Ranger is lacking proper source of stability you will die due to slickshoes anyway.Question about mobility was about completly different thing than positioning is. Mobility allows you to engage/disengage to fast ‘+1’ other nodes.
Ranger has low burst compared to other classes now and Rapid Fire is the most telegraphed ability ever and probably the easiest one to dodge/evade/block.
TLDR – There is no reason to pick Ranger over Ele/Engi/Warrior/Guardian/Mesmer/Thief into premade team in competitive PvP.

thanks for beefing up a brainless pets and nerfing us.anet should give Mesmer’s pets to they got every thing else.i used to be good at dueling in wvw.now I just get killed with three hits from a war or a mes.there not a way to Couse the damage mes and wars and thiefs d.this game blows now.they should call it glass wars
Bro, do you even Ranger?
My Ranger build got stronger with the patch, and I love love love killing Thieves and Guardians in WvWvW and sPvP
I think that they’re a great mobility-enhancement option that isn’t mounts.
I’m cool with no Mordremoth in the Expansion at Launch. It would be more interesting to draw out the story-line and give more interesting bosses between us and the dragon. I mean, for the amount the Personal Story hyped Zhaitan, it sure was easy to get to him (not to mention the Press 2 to win fight).
Take some more time with the build up, and give some earlier direction to the Living World. Win-win.
