Druid Speculation - Specialization Skills

I think that it would be interesting to have Transforms that augment, rather than replace, your current skills.

Not sure how it would be implemented in GW2, but I’m thinking of something similar the WoW Moonkin and Tree of Life forms—something like:

  1. Stag Form (healing): Increases Healing Power, Pulses AoE Healing, Pulses Regen, adds chance to cure conditions on hit.
  2. Jaguar Form: Increases Ferocity, pulses protection and might, adds a chance to daze on hit.
  3. Eagle Form: Increases Precision, pulses swiftness and fury, adds a chance to activate a weapon skill without triggering its cooldown
  4. Viper Form: Increases Condition Damage, adds vulnerability on hit, adds a chance to inflict poison and cripple on hit
  5. Bear Form (elite): Increases Power and Toughness, pulses Stability, Protection, and Might, adds chance to knockdown on hit

Now that I think of it, those work just as well as stances.

"No Subscription" is not a FAVOR

Yeah, I’ve been playing since launch (which, oddly enough, is around the same amount of time I played WoW (from WotLK to shortly after Cataclysm), and I have spent soooo much less money on GW2. I even buy things from the cash shop periodically (because I like supporting a company that gives me something I like), and therefore have shiny new skins and status items that I never had in WoW.

Also, not having to pay a sub makes it so the game doesn’t punish me for taking a break…

So yeah, OP, if you want to kill GW2, add a subscription.

The stats are slightly below full glass, but I get lots of survivability from my traits and utilities (ability to cleanse 8 conditions on demand, passive condi to pet, and two stun breaks). Between GS Block/knockback and stun, LB 4, and Traits giving Blind and Taunt to F2, there is a fair amount of control to this build as well

Give it a try.

Ranger Sword vs Revenant Sword

in Ranger

Posted by: MattyP.6954

MattyP.6954

This is a faulty comparison.

Sword is Revenant’s only pure dps weapon. Conversely, Sword is a utility weapon for Ranger (two dodges, two cripples, and a gap close). Comparing the dps from the two just doesn’t make sense. If you wanted a more fair comparison, go for Ranger Longbow vs Revenant Sword and adjust for range.

Do I think that Ranger Sword needs some work? Yeah, it’s wonky as all hell. That doesn’t mean that this comparison makes any sense or that you can compare two classes on one weapon alone.

Let’s put it this way: If stats were balanced against eachother, a duel between a Guardian with Nomad Stats and a Guardian with Berzerker Stats (skills, skill level, and traits being the same) should take about the same time as if both of the players had Celestial Stats. That is clearly not the case.

Running glass should be difficult, and, in PvE, it isn’t. Where’s the Risk/Reward calculus?

Most stats kind of work like that. Unfortunately, healing itself works on a whole different scale than other game mecanics. When the combo of your thoughness + healing allows you to survive a full healing skill cooldown cycle, you kind of achieve complete immunity to your attacker. Even if you aren’t close to immunity, you might get out of it a huge and disproportionate TTK.

There IS a reason why healing power scales soo poorly and this is it.

So, since healing doesn’t mesh well with the other stats, you end up with those “unbalanced” stats.

Why? Like any mechanic there’s counterplay. Why not interrupt the heal? Or poison? Or chill to increase the cd?

Zerker isn’t one stat, it’s 3 stats.

And it’s not one stat that outshines other in PvE, it’s all the offensive type stats that outshine the defensive type stats.

Sinister might very well become meta for some classes/build soon. I heard that engineer condition might be more DPS than direct damage already. You’ll note that Sinister is 3 offensive stats too.

And why do offensive stats outshine defensive ones? Because they actually matter.

The defensive stats are purely passive benefits. The offensive ones require active actions from the user to matter. They are more skilled. If you put in place a meta where builds with 1 offensive+2 defensive stats are better than 3 offensive, essentially you are enforcing a situation where bad play is more efficient than good play.

I don’t see that happening ever.

Let’s put it this way: If stats were balanced against eachother, a duel between a Guardian with Nomad Stats and a Guardian with Berzerker Stats (skills, skill level, and traits being the same) should take about the same time as if both of the players had Celestial Stats. The issue here is twofold:

  1. People generally shouldn’t try to dictate how other people play. If someone doesn’t want to play with non-zerker geared people, then don’t play with them if you don’t run zerker. On the flip side, if you don’t want label your group “zerker only”, don’t kitten and moan when non-zerkers show up.
  1. The way stats are balanced in this game (both how stats are balanced against eachother and how they interact with the content) is pretty much completely broken. It shouldn’t be the case that one stat so strongly outshines all others in any one game mode.

Frankly, gear set stats should be balanced against each other. If Stats were properly balanced, this wouldn’t be as much of an issue.

Edit: Some examples would probably be helpful. It should be really hard to finish content if you’re full glass (High Risk, High Reward), rewarding skilled players but punishing players who aren’t as skilled by still build glassy.

If you want to make a difference and stop gear elitism, then ANet needs to make it so that Glassy Gear sets clear runs quickly yet inconsistently and Tanky Gear sets clear runs more slowly yet more consistently.

As long as people can consistently and easily complete dungeons in glass gear without a lot of risk (or skill, for that matter), people are going to QQ about non-zerkers in their group.

Isn't 1500 a bit too high?

in Ranger

MattyP.6954

@DHawk. Because our competition (thieves and mesmers) always has the capability of ambushing us leading with a stun. And its not uncommon to lose the majority of our health pool in the first few attacks. That invuln can be the only chance a ranger has of recovering. As the range from the longbow is easily negated by ambush tactics.

I’d aggree pre patch, but post patch our damage isn’t as high as ppl always think
e.g. i have 2,85k power and 250% crit damage on my thief, a bs on a ranger, depending on his build will do 8-10k damage (10 only if you are very very lucky)
that is not a lot of damage considering you need to be stealthed and attack from behind (yes stealth makes it easier but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s a hard move, especially in combat)
so i can get the ranger half health to max 40%, the stun is long worn off, a smart ranger will use #4 followed by #3 then the heal and then #2
thief dead
I’m not trying to badmouth or anything like that,
and I’ve played ranger for a long time myself so i kinda sorta know what I’m talking about ^^
if you react fast enough it isn’t that hard to kill a thief, when he attacks you when your own health is at max.
or does anyone disagree?

It’s not an invuln. We still take Condition damage under the effects of signet of stone.

And, btw, a smart ranger would get the hell out of Longbow and switch to a melee weapon to, you know, deal with you in melee range.

tbh switching to a melee weapon is what i always hope for, the only thing I’m “afraid” of as thief is the range and rapid fire
that’s about it
switching to the melee to fight is a blessing, at least for me, but i play dd i don’t know about dp, should be the same tho
and well yeah, you still take condi damage, but thieves hardly ever play condi, and i they do they won’t start the fight with a backstab, meaning the whole ambush theory is irrelevant

PS nice to have a discussion without random fanboys cussing all the time crying about kitten being op

I have a pretty decent strategy for countering thief which involves first trying to get the LB4 off. If that fails (a good thief usually dodges it) and Lightning Reflexes is on CD, I switch to GS and hit 4, a successful block is a knockback/interrupt. Then GS3, Signet of Stone, GS2, Lightning Reflexes, switch to LB, etc etc.

Why Are Some Stat Combos Hard to Obtain?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: MattyP.6954

MattyP.6954

First of all, I’m going to preface this by saying that I’m assuming that Stat Sets are more or less balanced. I know this isn’t true, but let’s pretend :-).

I first encountered this when I wanted to obtain a set of Zealot’s Armor for my Necromancer, and I’m running in to it again while looking in to obtaining a Sinister set for my Ranger.

Why are some stat combinations so difficult to obtain for Exotic Gear?

In the case of Zealot’s armor, you can’t buy or sell it on the Trading Post (Account Bound on Obtain), you can’t discover the recipes through crafting (those you have to buy on the TP), and the only way you can get the mats to craft them are either buying them on the TP or having the watchwork mining pick (gem store purchase). It cost me about 120 gold, all things considered, to craft a set of zealot armor.

Contrast that with Berzerker stats which, on top of actually being highly sought after, is crafted with easily obtainable mats, tradable, and you get the recipe through discovery or by unlocking levels of crafting.

Not only does this not make any sense, but it puts up barriers to diverse builds and theorycrafting that, in my humble opinion, are unnecessary and silly.

the only thing i dislike about the longbow is that #2 causes vuln and it traces, for mesmer or thief it is kinda unfair, that even tho they go stealth or dodge once it won’t really change the fact that they are more or less kittened, I’m not trying to cry whine or call bs on other ppl
I’m just saying that it shouldn’t trace through stealth and cause vuln, it’s not needed
if a ranger can stay at long range, e.g. being positioned at highground the enemy can’t get too, you’ll never loose/die, unless you are a complete noob ^^
and honestly, the argument that LB isn’t good in pvp is just silly, LB is a long range weapon, pvp is close combat mostly, it doesn’t make any sense.
As I said, don’t let the #2 skill track through stealth and/or cause vuln

PS: ready for the hate to come raging down on me for saying this xD

I’ll trade LB2 tracking into stealth for thieves being able to backstab from stealth.

Yeah, Ranger Longbow is definitely OP in relation to other ranged weapons. I’m not sure if that’s intentional or not, but whatever.

Is it more powerful than other ranged weapons? Probably, though it’s easy to counter. Is it Overpowered? Probably not.

In most cases, it’s pretty silly to compare individual weapons across professions because professions aren’t balanced based on single weapons. Profession balance is based on the totality of what that profession has to offer.

Ranger has a really strong ranged dps option because it lacks in high-dps melee weapons (both of its melee options are highly defensive/mobile weapons, rather than having high dps). Warrior, as an example, has really weak ranged options when everything is considered because it has really strong melee options.

So yes, Ranger LB is probably the most powerful ranged weapon in the game for single-target DPS, but that doesn’t make it OP

Backdoor to The Underworld - Reapers Gate

Actually, the mythos of Tyria is built in such a way that the different races’ religions don’t necessarily conflict.

  • The Human pantheon represents the only theistic religion in the game right now (among the major playable races)
  • The Asura believe in the Eternal Alchemy, which is almost Animistic in it’s conception.
  • The Charr (with the exception of the Flame Legion, which worship Titans as gods) are largely atheistic.
  • The Norn belief system consists of ancestor worship and worship of animal spirits.
  • The Sylvari are tied to the Dream/Nightmare, which is a creation of (or perversion of) the Pale Tree, which is not necessarily a Deity.

Keep in mind also that the Human gods did, at one point, live bodily on Tyria and is not disputed.

I honestly don’t believe that they will bring this back, given the focus on Dragons and such, but I don’t think that it would be difficult to implement, lore-wise.

Necro Life Siphons work well enough for me. The key isn’t to make slow, big hits with them, it’s lots of little hits.

With Guardian greatsword, the focus seems to be on Cleaving attacks and Area of effect. The healing is less pitiful when it procs multiple times per attack. Also, it isn’t supposed to replace a heal—it’s just a small amount of additional sustain for a more aggressive playstyle.

Prove to me Ranger is bad at roaming

MattyP.6954

I will concede that rangers are in a better place than they were previously, but I will also argue that all the progress this class has gained is far and beyond overshadowed by the immense improvements other classes received thereby negating any semblance of balance that there once was.

Rangers may be decent roamers, only behind thieves, mesmers, elementalists, and medi guardians, but 5th place isn’t bad if you consider that “top tier”

If you really can’t handle the ranger post patch I’d consider leaving Guild Wars 2, try something like Tetris or Candy Crush

My power Ranger eats medi guards for breakfast :-)

The only professions I have issues with still are thief and mesmer.

mesmer i can understand, but not thief, 1 single thief is so weak it’s sad, and since 99% are still running full zerk because they are too dumb to get the memo that it’s not viable anymore they die with about 3 autohits from anything, LB#2 will kill any zerk thief as long as he’s in range and doesn’t have anything to kyte behind.
thief is kinda pathetic atm, you need 2,3 thieves to dish out the damage 1 did pre patch
if you don’t believe me play it, then you’ll really have something to cry about

It’s less an issue of 1v1 than being +1ed by them. Getting hit by Basi venom multiple times (when they run venom sharing) kind of ruins my day, as I run zerker.

that doesn’t make the thief strong, but a group of thieves, i could call ranger op if 2 rangers use their roots on me one after the other so i can’t move and am pew pewed without anythink to do
and only a few run venom sharing, at least on EU servers, don’t know about US, but that doesn’t make the thief op, it just means you need to learn to counter that, lightning reflexes for example would counter the venom if I’m not mistaking

thief alone is very weak atm and you’ll see that if you try him out yourself, he’s only strong in a group with multiple thieves

I never said that Thieves were OP, I just said that I have issues with some of their tricks in roaming. When I get hopelessly outnumbered, I can usually dodge/disengage before I get blown up (and usually sneak back and pick someone off). That first basi-venom from stealth, particularly when my utilities are on cd, makes things more difficult.

That being said, I can usually get away, but I’m less likely to get a kill.

It’s absolutely fantastic to almost look on NPCs with disdain at their power (also, being able to take on champ enemies solo is fun as hell)

Can you post the build? I’d like to see it.

Here you go: http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?vRAQNAoYWjk0QLNWTD+0A7NOsGKZAEyl8MBigMguCxwkC-TZRBwAbOEAlLDs4EAYd/BAPBAA

I’ve also had success with it in PvP as well, though that takes a bit more maneuvering and practice to get just right lol Let me know what you thinkg

Here’s mine, and it’s been pretty effective in SW and WvW. Haven’t tried it in PvP, though Knight’s would probably work.

Rifle range

MattyP.6954

People have been complaining about this since launch. The issue is that Engineer gets a shot gun, but everyone really wants it to be a sniper rifle.

Engi Rifle is actually a really well balanced weapon (damage, cc, immob, defensive/cc, escape/gap close), it would be a bit OP at longer ranges (consider, if you will, a 1500 range immob).

Toughness doing nothing is the last straw.

There is still some stupid buggy stuff post-launch, but that isn’t the main issue.

It just seems like Offensive Stats (Power, Precision, Ferocity, Condition Damage) provides more bang for your buck (HA!) than defensive stats (Vitality, Toughness, Healing Power). It’s more than just the fact that defensive stats are often made less useful by active defense (dodges, utilities, etc), but it seems that the stats themselves are just weaker.

I’ll put it this way: In a 1v1 duel between similarly built (traits, skills) and similarly skilled Guardians should take a similar amount of time if they’re both wearing Celestial Gear to if one was wearing Nomad’s and the other Berzerker’s if defensive stats were balanced with offensive stats. I don’t think that that’s the case at this point.

Thoughts on Elite skill?

I wish that there was an Elite Signet or Well. It would mesh much better with my build than shoehorning Lich or Plague-form in to it.

It’s what engineer used to be: You pick the least-bad option rather than the best.

Edit: Corrected a really dumb typo.

I see your point, but being able to 1-shot on an auto attack is a bit OP, dontchathink?

Longbow has one of the strongest AAs in the game already, after all.

Delightful Game Theory conversation aside, doesn’t the game automatically select the Highest Bidder (for sellers) and the Lowest Seller (for bidders) when you select “Buy Now” or “Sell Now”?

Honestly, I would prefer the ability to sell directly to other players.

I run a gimmicky vampiric brawler build, and I am having loads of fun in the Silverwastes and WvWvW with it (haven’t done it in sPvP because Zealot armor isn’t a thing there).

Honestly, I don’t really care if I’m not always 100% top tier competitive. I just want to have fun.

Using voiceover work for that is silly. However, a message in the combat log wouldn’t hurt. It’ll only really affect people who pay attention to combat logs anways.

Need to make Support give credit

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: MattyP.6954

MattyP.6954

Pure support exists in this game, but I don’t think that any role should get away without doing any dps.

What arena net seems to be doing is creating mechanics through which players can support allies through effects generated by attacks and damaging abilities. Think Sigil of Water, Transfusion trait for Necromancers, Blast Finishers heal for Engineers, Revenant Staff Auto Attack, etc. That isn’t even mentioning all of the boon sharing and debuffing that also contributes to party damage and sustain. The lack of ally-targeting in this game (in particular, targeted healing) effectively kills the UI Game that WoW Healing and support turned in to.

Think about it, in a game like WoW, you could slot all healing skills and heal a dungeon—never dealing any damage to an enemy. That is impossible in this game—you can not create a build with no damaging abilities, and sitting on your hands while your “support” skills come off of cd is just a crappy way to play (both from effectiveness and “not being a crappy team player” standpoints).

So, should support be used to determine event participation? Definitely, sacrificing dps for outgoing healing or boon-sharing (which I do on multiple characters) shouldn’t be punished. But I don’t think that you should ever get above silver rewards if you never touch an enemy.

If you bought the base game before the announcement, you get a free character slot.

If you bought the base game after the announcement, there is a refund program you can take advantage of.

I swear, this same QQ has been responded to in so many places by so many people.

[Creative] Replace 'Soften the Fall'

in Ranger

Posted by: MattyP.6954

MattyP.6954

Its also a group skill falling first can save other that fall after you if traited.

Have proof of this? This is the first time I have heard of it. Also, yeah, making it baseline might be a knee-jerk suggestion (at least by me) but there is some merit merging it with disabled traits to free open an adept slot.

If it’s baseline, it’s just a nerf to fall damage and everyone gets a free effect on falling. It’s dumb.

Games where you build your characters are about choices. If you want fall damage mitigation, then you will have to go along with not having one of the alternatives (sorry)

I think they should just retool the Soften the Fall trait. Change it to:

Reduce falling damage by 50%. While falling, skin a pet and lay the fur as a rug under you. Pose seductively on your bear skin rug, stunning nearby enemies.

Can’t lose!

Like so?

Prove to me Ranger is bad at roaming

in Ranger

Big Ventari/Staff Concern

Look at Silverwastes. You don’t have to tag all of the enemies in an event, you just have to participate. Then you get the same reward as everyone else for completing the event. That is probably going to be how it will work for future content.

That being said, I don’t think that there will ever be a “pure healz” build where you never have to touch an enemy, nor should there be. Every class and role will have to do some damage—playing support/healing is just about sacrificing some of that damage in order to help your friends.
