Honestly, just play a class you enjoy.
Yes, Necromancer is the only class that doesn’t bring a lot to the party in a dungeon run, but there should still be people willing to play with you.
I find it silly that a PUG would not welcome you, since it being a PUG means that most of the time there is a very small amount of organization, so being close to optimal is probably not even an option anyway.
Of the classes you mentioned, I have both a Guardian and a Mesmer, they are both fun to play, but they arguably have a higher skill cap than, say, Warrior (which is another great class that I personally enjoy a lot).
If your goal are dungeons, keep in mind that some of the stuff that is asked of a Guardian, can be asked of a Mesmer if no Guardians are in the party.
If you want to try something completely new maybe go for Elementalist?
I’m in no way an expert, so if you have time I suggest you to take a look at these video series by Nike from DnT, a NA guild:
What each profession is expected to do in a dungeon run (except Necro)
Basic rotation guide for each profession (including Necro)
So yes, sorry for the big spill and I apologise if threads like these make you angry, but ah well!
No worries, welcome back!
Structured PvP is Conquest. It’s about capping and holding points, it’s 5v5, and a sound strategy is more important than killing everything that moves
There is a deathmatch map in the rotation (once you queue and the parties are formed, 3 random maps appear and there is a vote), it’s called Courtyard.
No 2v2 or 3v3, except maybe on a Custom Arena, with people you know.
I’m telling you so you are aware they exist, but they are very very expensive and it’s more of a guild thing rather than single individuals I guess.
World versus World sees 3 huge teams pit against each other for control over supply camps, towers, keeps. There is siege weaponry, and some experienced players take up the role of commanders and direct the others.
It’s pretty darn good
But in this last case you do need lvl 80 gear if you want to perform on the same level as the other players.
(edited by Maxwell.7843)
No gear grind, you can start PvP right away, although obviously you won’t be familiar with the professions.
LOL, well now my human warrior has gone invisible for no reason. This is not an auspicious start to this game. :-(
Nah, don’t worry, that sometimes happens, its a bug.
You are being very unlucky with this stuff happening to you on your first day, generally the gaming experience is reasonably smooth.
Being a good Guardian is probably harder than being a good Warrior.
I’m thinking about dungeons, where a mistake by the guardian can lead to a team wipe, and a mistake by the warrior to a dps loss…
Aegis, stability, reflection, etc… Guardians have a lot on their plate, lots of stuff to take care of.
I’m actually surprised Spirit Watch fares so well, since I’m relatively new to PvP most of the teams I ended up in completely disregarded capping, uncapping and holding points in favour of only pursuing the secondary objective.
I guess I kinda assumed everyone was having bad matches on that map…
You don’t need to wait, unless something bugged out.
Did you talk to the npc with the green star on their head?
The Great Hunt lets you pick your prey, maybe you are stuck there?
I thought we were all on the “Logan falls to his death” Train…
:-p

Without really trying, as time passed I ended up getting Armorsmithing up from 400 to 425.
Now my guardian needs two exotic sets (Berserker and Soldier), and since I’m short on tokens and feeling impatient, I was thinking of maybe crafting the armours instead.
Two complete sets should take me to 475, which is close enough to 500 to make it a tempting possible future objective.
I know that this guide is more efficient, my reasoning here is “if I use the guide I end up selling the stuff and the return isn’t that good compared to the gold spent; if I craft them for myself at least I get to keep them”.
What do you guys think?
To be fair, since there are no tanks, there are some attacks that you must dodge, whatever your stats are.
Currently, in Dungeons, Berserker is the gear used in the high risk – high reward playstyle. Once you know what you are doing, surviving won’t be a problem.
Since you have just started, I wouldn’t worry about any of that at all.
Enjoy Warrior, it’s fun, straight forward class, it was my first class and I still have a lot of fun with it.
Anyway, let’s also keep in mind that in these months traits have been changed, removing the map completion ones. So I would say that it’s not fair to say that the problem is being ignored.
You must have different trait tasks than I have, because I still have six traits tied to six map clears.
My bad, I was referring to those in this post.
Out of curiosity, why t4?
You can try contacting support.
Obviously there’s no guarantee you’ll get a new one, but if I were in your shoes I’d definitely try.

No ETA.
They would like to implement it, but the events were thought for the open world, so a major overhaul would be needed.
If you like Necromancer, go for it! The profession is perfectly fine, except in dungeons.
There ya go, I fixed it for you. :-p
I’m just joking, couldn’t resist, sorry :-)
Op, now that you have picked a class, just keep playing and having fun, don’t get stressed over it!
I’m still not sure Specializations work outside of the Heart of Maguma, to be honest.
When Colin was discussing them I think he said something along the lines of “in the jungle, the Ranger becomes the Druid”, which can be interpreted two ways: either the Ranger learns how to be a Druid in the jungle, or the Ranger can be a Druid only inside the jungle.
I seem to be the only one with this doubt though, so maybe I misunderstood or misheard…
Gaile’s post suggests that we will have some definite answers concerning Traits in the months to come.
We know that in the expansion progression will be account bound.
The core game needs to be compatible with the expansion, so it’s reasonable to hypothesize that the trait system will be subject to a revamp before the expansion is out.
Personally, I hope that after unlocking them once, they are account bound.
I would settle for “no changes, but now trait guides cost 1/10th of the current price” :-p
Anyway, let’s also keep in mind that in these months traits have been changed, removing the map completion ones. So I would say that it’s not fair to say that the problem is being ignored.
Lastly, we know that the living story is in hiatus for a significant number of months. I think that there is a definite chance a feature patch comes out in a few months, with improvements on particularly important aspects of the game.
Considering the time difference between April ‘14 and September ’14 I wouldn’t discount the possibility of the next one being near.
(edited by Maxwell.7843)
I’m not a new player anymore, but my first character was created after the update.
Unlocking the various traits can be fun (and/or a chore, depending on the specific trait) the first time around. With my first character I wanted to explore the world of Tyria, and so I unlocked the traits.
Some of them came naturally, some others not so much.
Thing is, I did it once, I really don’t want to do it all again a second (third, foruth, etc.) time with my alts though… I’d like to bring them to WvW and do dungeons with them…
As a side note, I think this thread will be merged in the big one.
Your mileage may vary depending on what server you are on, personally I got WvW completion mostly by following commanders around, it took like a few hours.
In GW2 it’s not like that.
Depending on the type of content you are playing, each profession will have a few optimal builds, which means that each profession is viable and should be welcome in any group.
Even if you decide to use a bad build you will find people willing to play with you.
Also, you don’t really need groups for most of the content.
In the open world you can do everything on your own, and that’s what most people do unless they are playing with friends. In open world PvE people form parties because they have a common goal, not because a certain profession is needed.
In PvP the game finds a suitable group for you, although you can also decide to create your own party.
In WvW you can follow the commander without joining a party, but if I were you I’d join your server community to find out what they are up to. When you decide to try out WvW, ask in the WvW section for advice and ask if there is a community website dedicated to your server.
In any case, I can’t imagine people not wanting you in their party because of your profession. If someone does give you crap about you playing Ranger, know that they are probably greener than you ;-)
Awesome, thanks
I can’t find this anywhere. Can you salvage the glorious armor pieces that you get from the reward track?
Welcome.
I tried Ranger, and I loved it, except pet AI was bad. But I LOVE animals and the wilderness. At release it was the worst class. Sadly it seems a lot of people play this class. And the pet AI is still bad supposedly.
Why do you say “sadly”?
It doesn’t exist a class that no one plays, so just pick the one you think you will enjoy the most. The only one with a pet mechanic is Ranger, so go for it!
I too hope that buying the expansion means having 2 or 3 character slots added to the ones you already own.
Then it depends a lot on the price tag too.
(edited by Maxwell.7843)
While I too hope there will be a lot of maps (don’t we all?), at the moment it’s impossible to know.
“Three biomes” might mean “One big map (Heart of Maguma) with 3 vertical levels”.
Or maybe the current map will be expanded east, and there will be space for more than a couple new zones.
My bet is 2-3 new maps, each with 3 vertical levels, so that the actual final number feels more like 2-3 x3.
(edited by Maxwell.7843)
Since the expansion will come out in quite a bit of months, I really hope that stuff like traits and the personal story will be addressed in the meantime.
My alts are traitless and stuck before the broken chapter (I really don’t wanna miss it…) :-/
I’d much rather have a new class rather than a new playable race, so I’m satisfied with how things turned out.
I don’t think we need a new race, it would screw up the personal story and it would force the devs on reworking on all the armours, wasting their time over something superficial.
I have a Charr warrior and a Norn guardian, so the revenant will be Human.
I’ve been wanting to make a heavy armour Human character, since every armour weight seem to fit better on them (making a Charr look good is not as easy).
Also, I like human cultural heavy armour more than asura and sylvari.
(edited by Maxwell.7843)
I found the bit, thanks
I’m pretty sure that Masteries are limited to the jungle.
Don’t know about Specailizations though (does a Ranger become a Druid only inside the jungle?).
I really enjoyed the presentation.
I know our questions will be answered as time passes, but I’d like a small clarification on whether the specialisation will only work while in the new map, or if will also work on the existing PvE maps.
.Yes, charr PCs have that moment where they can intimidate a bully into leaving Camp Resolve…
[…]
Could you tell me where, please?
I never noticed, I want to experience it with my own character
No one is mentioning this, you do know that you can kill the bandit champion and loot the body for a key that opens a daily chest, don’t you?
Sw is getting better and better, can’t wait for “don’t hit it, wait for it to die”
I think that the “no AOE at Blue” may be due to the gas bubbles, they heal the boss when popped.
I have no idea whether they heal as much as the bubbles at Red.
I don’t understand, is there a “berserker problem”?
If the problem is “high DPS parties are more efficient in dungeons”, then I must say it does not seem like a problem to me, it’s seems logical: you do more damage, the bosses die faster.
Everyone is free to run whatever build they like, lfg gives everyone the option to join a group of like minded individuals.
I really don’t see the issue here…

The PAX South panel will be recorded for those of you that won’t be able to watch it live. We got you covered!
As for survive-ability, they have possibly the easiest time in dungeons. Using Greatsword 3 they can avoid pretty much any attack if dodge is on cool down and even regain some energy using F1. Thinking specifically of CoE on Alpha’s circles of death this becomes a walk in the park for warriors. Even on Mai Trin on the canons. If you get stuck in a tight spot, GS3 and you’re safe.
Well, Warrior is not the only class with an “extra dodge”, what about Sword 2 on Mesmer…?
As for ease of play, think about a warriors rotation. The majority of people that play Warrior will either run a ranged 2nd weapon so the chances they will swap off GS is slim..
Spam 2 and auto attack. Compare that to the rotations of an elementalist or an engineer.
Then get back to me :p
Other classes have more complicated rotations, of course, but what you describe is not even close to the optimal rotation for a Warrior, and no semi-competent Warrior player is going to use that.
Warrior is a great class if you are new to the game not because it’s “easy mode”, but because it’s the most straightforward. Any player unfamiliar with GW2 can understand the main class mechanic (Adrenaline), because a lot of other games have a similar concept: you fill up a bar and are able to use a “special” attack.
After all if you start the game for the first time, chances are you are going to feel drawn towards something you are familiar with.
In my opinion, it comes back to the fact that a lot of things are not explained (or could be explained better) in game.
For instance, think about the Necros that use deathshoud only as a second health pool…
(…)
If there is one thing I hope for whatever HoT is, among other things I hope it is a major overhaul of how Dungeons works, and a serious effort to put the other professions on par with Warrior and Guardian in terms of utility and damage.
It’s not that Warriors and Guardians are uberclasses, it’s that a lot of people are utterly unaware to what each profession can bring to the party.
In general, one Warrior is enough in a dungeon run. If people have given you crap for playing an Engineer, it’s their own fault for being ignorant, it is not a problem related to the Warrior class.
This sort of problem is caused by people, not by broken or unbalanced mechanics. You ask to bring other classes on par with Warriors, but banners are literally the only thing we got that makes us useful in a dungeon.
The real solution would be to make people more aware of how things work, for instance with stuff like in game tips and tutorials.
In game tips and guides would also improve a lot pvp (eg. teach rotations) or wvw (eg. do not claim stuff for your guild if you don’t know what you are doing).
My suggestion to you, OP, is to find a guild or a group of friends that are less oblivious than the average pug.
I believe these videos by Nike from DnT could be useful to you:
What To Do In Speed Runs : Engineer!
Basic PvE DPS Rotation Guide : Engineer
I too enjoyed the whispers storyline more than the vigil one, so my advice is to just roll with it!
The order is not that big of a deal, don’t let that ruin the fun for you and just pick Vigil on you next character.
At the end, all the storylines are interesting, so if I were you I’d give them all a chance.
Well, SFR were red if I recall correctly, and they do have the numbers.
Keep also in mind that usually EotM trains are not really organized, and there are a lot of upleveled players (which means “bad” gear and no traits): these things concur on meking the bigger group prevail on (utterly destroy) the smaller one.
I have nothing against EotM, but I suggest you give a shot to WvW (borderlands and eternal battlegrounds), it’s really really fun and (in my personal experience) our commanders know what they are doing.
Thank you all for the advice.
I did make the jump shortly after my latest answer to the this thread.
The first days I mostly ended up in one sided matches (either in favour of my team, or against it), but lately there have been a lot of more balanced matches.
Now if there is a really big difference in the score it is because someone in the loosing team messed up badly (I noticed that a lot of people completely ignore teamchat).
Unranked PvP turned out to be a lot of fun, so thanks for the encouragement.
Ever herd of writing [spoiler] instead of actually spoiling content for everyone else?
And to everyone who might want to defend OP: the title itself was a spoiler before someone fixed it…
Thank you all for answering
I’m gonna practice some more, and get more familiar with my build, but I’ll definitely get into unranked
Thanks for posting these builds.
I’m trying Axe/Bow and I like the damage, each Eviscerate hits really hard, but I’m not completely confident I understood what the typical role of this kind of warrior is.
If you had to refer to this thread, would you say it’s Roamer/Far point assaulter?
Welcome to the game and to the community.
I never encountered trouble with a character name, and mine aren’t even that creative.
Following the racial conventions can help.
Eg.
Charr: “latin sounding name” “warband+something”
Norn: “nordic sounding name” “title”
I understand it can feel frustrating not to be able to get a particular name you desire, but I find it hard to believe you can find even a slight variation of it that suites your taste.
I believe it’s a bit soon to decide this is your worse MMO experience, just based on this…
Yes, sometimes it happens with the first song you play if you join in the middle of the session.
Hello. I started playing PvP rather recently (a month or so), and I think I’ve gotten to the point where I’m of some use to the team.
It was explained to me that hotjoin it not an accurate representation of the “traditional” PvP experience, and apart from getting my feet wet it was not going to teach me that much about the correct way conquest is played.
How did you decide it was time to take this step? Any tips?
Do you normally have a lot of lag? :-(
Also, if you have a charr, switch to a smaller character, it does help.
