I’m on the fence with this one but Anet does itself no favors with it’s BWE’s and using this as a selling point for pre-purchase. To me this is the catalyst of much of this complaint and I’m still of the opinion beta testing should be done by beta testers, not used as a sales pitch to customers.
I’ve played a fair few games where at the starting level your a fully kitted out uber-beast of death slaying everything in sight in some huge awe-inspiring battle with all skills unlocked and all weapons blazing full bore. Wahoo this game is friggin amazing!!!
end flashback/dream sequence
You wake up at level one naked holding a wet noodle realizing it will be a LONG time before you feel that way again.
From what I can garner this is exactly what has happened here with giving players everything for nothing to play with, then taking it away. Sure might work ok in an offline RPG but in this genre it just seems to kitten a lot of people off.
It is the same reason (although partly in reverse) of why I skipped most of the BWE content. I wanted to be surprised by the new stuff and I knew I would be getting a good chunk of it after paying $100 for the kittening thing. Not only would I be seeing all the content, but it would be ready for prime time. Now I wish I had done as much of the beta events as I could because I will not see the things I had a taste of for a VERY long time. Especially on all my characters. Oh well, at least I get to play with the revenant specs.
Like someone else said earlier, there is not a match between what new specs I was looking forward to the most with what existing specs I like. In fact, the new spec I like the most is on a spec I loathe and hoped it would reinvigorate the profession. What is the point of my first HOT experience being with a profession I can not stand? I would think they would want people to have as good an impression of the jungle as possible.

Should also point out that datamining from a month ago put us at 250 HP for the elite spec, which is more than the currently acquirable 214. Which already refutes Menadena’s statement.
That 250 was a huge part of why many thought the numbers were not to be trusted and were obviously too high.

I’ll simplify it for you.
I wanted to play the new content as my Herald.
Not play the new content to get a herald at the end.
Ok lets take this example.
You want to play Herald in HoT this means you’re starting a NEW Rev, right?
You now need to level it (with tomes or regularly), by leveling you GAIN Hero points.
You reach 80 having SAVED enough Hero points to unlock Herald’s skills, traits etc.
You now SPEND those Hero points on Herald mechanics.
Congratulations you now get to play HoT as a Herald.
Nope. You have to buy all the core skills/traits before you can put one HP in the new skills/traits. Leveling to 80 with 0 challenges does not give you any more HPs than you need to unlock the core skills/traits.

So you want elite spec unlocked right away? With all skins unlocked as well including all new legendaries? billions of each mats in the bank? All maps unlocked with an instant teleport to wherever you want option? Dev Menu? OHKO button? Cheat mode?
What the puppy?
Absolutely NOBODY is asking for skins and items to be giving to us. What we are asking for is a REASONABLE path to the specs to use to get them. The only quibble is what is the definition of reasonable (ie, hero point cost) but the absolute upper end is how many points you can EARN in the existing zones as that is what we were told.

I am trying to recall a single MMORPG where an expansion handed out everything you expected to get with it up front, rather than making you earn it. I can’t think of a single one, and this sense of entitlement just truly baffles me.
Entitlement?
We were told what to expect. People planned for that and did the work asked of them. Whether you liked it or not we knew the upper boundary.
Then they changed it. Not us.
What? They did not change anything since they have not until now given a number.
They stated world completion was the max. Until the datamine of 170 most people were assuming 100 HPs would be a good number to guess at. When we saw the 170 (which again many did not believe) and the progression for a typical profession I realized I could not get everything right away but about 120 would give me a good starting build.
Can you source that? Because i don’t think they said that, I think assumptions were made. That being the case, if they DID change that, because I won’t swear they didn’t, I have the following thoughts on that:
1. It IS uncool to change the info this late in the game. So if they said different before now, then yeah, I agree it’s uncool.
2. However, sometimes changes have to be made, for whatever reason: health of the game, technical issues, other stuff. It’s highly unlikely they are changing things just to make things a pain in the rear for us.
Wanna know something? I kinda thought we would have our elites unlocked if we had done all the hps in the core world, and I would have preferred it that way, so I could use my elites fully at the very beginning of HoT. That being the case, though, I don’t consider this a bad thing.
My problem is the massive rage we are seeing here. The sheer levels of it is ridiculous. If someone said “I’m not happy with this,” I could understand, but people are just burn-the-building-down angry, and it’s flat out unreasonable.
I do not recall the URL offhand but anet specifically said we could run the new content with elites if we had world completion.

GG for buying a game that required you to.. wait for it… play the game.
Maybe because (drumroll) this was sold as a ‘play your own way’ game and good for casual players, like RPers?
I dislike when people take the ‘play your own way’ to mean develop a game where I do nothing and get everything. Because that is how you want to ‘play’ the game. This is not what ‘play your own way’ means. So please stop using it like that.
I am not. I prefer to explore at random. That means if I complete a map it was pure chance. Some people hate that style but, hey, I can not understand the mindset of HAVING to get every vista to complete a map either, especially since the only real reward is a star next to your name plus a title for completing everything in the core game. Sure our rewards are different, as little as the difference is, but that is my choice.
For HOT I bought the game so I could do the same but with new mechanics. Now I am told I need to grind content I do not care about rushing around in to be able to explore it with the mechanics I paid $100 to get.

Did RPers get level 80 by just logging in the game and map chat or /emote in Divinity’s Reach ?
After a year, no matter your level, your first character gets a 20 scroll. That and crafting gets you to 36. For the sake of argument you have no tomes in the bank and do nothing (including finding WPs/POIs in DR) to get skill beyond crafting. You get 16 tomes a month if you select the option per month of 6 tomes.
In less then 3 months you have an 80 just by buying some gold on the TP and doing crafting. Sure, you can do it MUCH faster but that was not the question you asked.

How many Hero Points are in the new HoT zones?
At least 40, we do not know the exact number.
Part of the problem is you can bet we will have to grind masteries to get some of them so do not assume all of them will be easily reachable. Some people have been saying ‘40 points, no problem’ but I doubt they have factored that in. Plus we know nothing about the difficulty level of jungle hero challenges.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Menadena.7482
Unless I am mistaken just to unlock half of the training line, we need 212 hero points?
It’s 400 points total to unlock everything in an elite spec training line – I just can’t remember off hand how many points folks have currently if they have done all the existing ones, but it’s right around 200. The rest you’ll need to earn in jungle to unlock the deeper skills/traits/etc. in the training line.
You only need 60 hero points to begin using your elite spec, the points you spend after that continue to unlock more skills, traits, skins, etc.
Again, hero challenges are worth 10 points each in the jungle. So no you don’t need to go do 200-400 jungle challenges.
A Portrait of the Player as a WvW Regular
- Two accounts (actually I have three but only purchased HoT for these two).
- Twelve level 80s
- Two above 60 hero points
- Only one with 100% map completion
- 75% of toons under 20% map completion
- 5904 combined total gaming hours
- No Legendary
- No full sets of ascended gear
- Purchaser of gems with real cash
- 1892 combined WXP rank (677 and 1215 respectively)How can you help me? Can I hire you to get the hero points for my toons?
Anet should totally cater to you, because your case is the same as 90% of the playerbase.
Yes, it sounds about right for a typical player that puts a lot into this game. I PVE but it is about the same accounting for the fact that I have only been here a year so my hours are less. I did not bother with world completion on everyone, but none has less than 100 challenges either.

For players rolling new characters, just be conservative with the utility skill unlocks and go do 10-15 hero challenges in the core game.
You can not though. They already stated you need full unlocks.
Before the datamine of 170 I just routinely unlocked everything. You got exactly how many points you needed at 80. That was a pretty big hint they wanted you to unlock everything. I have only rolled one character since then and was as stingy with the points as possible. My plan was to buy the elite then go back and fill in as much of the other traits as I could after deciding what trait lines I was going to use.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Menadena.7482
Just because they expected they were going to use them day one does not ever mean that they were. The title of " Elite" should have betrayed the fact that it was going to take some work.
Right. They seemed about the same balance (at least for a first try) as any other character. Most people just assumed they would cost the same as any other trait and skill line. The topic of unlocking has come up constantly as we waited for release. The name ‘elite’ we all took to mean ‘level 80s with a lot of hero challenges done’ and nobody from anet told us we were wrong. How many threads have there been with people talking about whether they liked a set of specs or not?
I bought hot for the new mechanics. I could give a toss about the new areas. Sure, I want to see them, but not be essentially forced to run through it, I wanted to explore at my own pace and appreciate things. Thanks, I can not do that now. I am now dreading HOT more than looking forward to it.
Oh well, Halloween content Friday. I do not know what I will do after the king leaves for the year though.

You aren’t obligated to get elite specs, you choose to do so voluntarily. No ones holding a gun to your head.
No instead they have people heaping derision on what was a big selling point for a number of people, that instead of it being a core part of HoT, it’s essentially ‘a reward’ for playing HoT. Quite a big difference.
Exactly. These specs have been hyped since day 1. Most of the news articles and points of interest streams were all about various elites. It was not like they were all-powerful either: while some fixed things others were just a flat-out ‘no’. It was clear they were aiming for a rough balance with existing professions.
Everyone expected to use them from day 1 (albeit with an unknown number of HPs, but we were assured it would be less that world completion would give us). I bought HOT for the new mechanics, I planned on looking at the new regions later at my own pace. There have been plenty of threads that took day-1 elites for granted ….. plenty of chances for someone at anet to say something.

I haven’t heard one good reason why we were only told 3 days before launch. This indicates that they knew it wouldn’t go down well and were happy to let people believe they would have access to elite spec on launch. Maybe they thought it would affect HoT sales, who knows. They could have mentioned this at any time before now but choose not to. I call skulduggery and shenanigans of the highest order.
I am also perplexed how this was handled. It is not on their list of news articles. I assume it is not in another thread (it feels like I have been in this one for hours …. oops, I have). It comes out as a dev post 6 pages into a thread asking for the information.

Core gameplay should NOT be gated behind a grind.
What are you even talking about? In the core game, don’t you have to level to 80 in order to go to cursed shores? So cursed shores is gated behind a grind as well, isn’kitten
Nope, you can take a low level into Cursed Shore. The boundary doesn’t require you to be level 80.
Plus if the response is ‘because they are gated by dying’: a low-level can just log in every day and collect the tomes. Then when they have enough zap to 80 …. no gate at all other than logging in.

Sorry, but that is not really fair to him. He only works there and likely did not make the call that it would be 400. Actually, I consider it a favour that he let us know rather than they kept us in the dark completely.

Noooooo….Colin…..difficulty wise the expansion is only for the top notch players….players like me, players like me who are clutzes… will never get a chance at the Elite specs…I am seriously about to cry here.
I bought the expansion, I did the Betas, I fell in love with Reaper, and Berzserker, and scrapper….I, I, I have been farming Hero Points on all my 33 plus characters like a mad thing….I learned to Jump up to Vistas well enough to get Map Complete on one of my characters, and now…..now I am told that the door to the elites have been slammed shut in my face.
Look at my account and you will see all the work I have done. Look at my buying History, I have been a..what do you call it?..a whale? I have played almost every day for three years….
I, I, I am sorry I am old enough to your Grandma and have lousy coordination…Darn, I am crying now…seriously. I was looking forward to this so much……
Lisa.
I could have written this. I am exactly like you. I love this game. I play almost every day. I have lousy coordination and many facets of the game are not available to me through my own limitations. I am not even sure I will be able to play in the Jungle due to the motion sickness that hit me every beta weekend after only a few hours in those tight quarters.
But, even if I couldn’t make through the jungle content I was so looking forward to the new specs… the scrapper.. the tempest.. etc. Which I found out today won’t be available to me.
How disappointing.
Same here, due to RL things I can not fully participate in everything but have found what I can do and am on practically every minute I am not working or sleeping. If most of something can be reached I will try to do so but if not it is just like a cruel joke. The fact that some people are ‘oh, it is EASY’ or ‘only the 1337 people should have the specs anet has been talking about since day 1’, well …
Telling us so soon to launch so we can not emotionally grieve over this and work out what we will do was not the way to handle it.
I am sure it will not be pretty the first time I see someone with elite specs.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Menadena.7482
I think what GW2 did is totally fair. Practically having a new class available right away would cheapen it. As you play the game you’ll unlock your new spec naturally.
Just like having a level 80 revenant on HOT launch will cheapen it?
But for alts, it will be a big task. Unless getting those new items in WvW is pretty fast.
I do agree it will be huge for alts. Once I can roll a revenant it will be 9 times I will need to do the HP train (which it will become as soon as someone sees where they are and puts it on a LFG). None of my characters has more than 120 HPs either as, unlike what some people are assuming, I actually stay to FIGHT the vet guarding it rather than stealth past.

DO NOT CHANGE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ELITE SPEC.
DO CHANGE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ELITE SPEC.
Even forgetting everything about grinding and what not you are missing something pretty crucial. Almost all of what they have talked of about HOT since day 1 has been how awesome each specs was. People were then playing with them all through the BWEs so took them for granted. So you are shocked people actually assumed they could, oh, use them by buying HOT?
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Menadena.7482
The thing is, those people who are looking at the 10 hero points per hero challenge in the HOT jungle and figuring this should get you to 400 quickly are forgetting one thing… chances are a lot of the challenge locations are going to be unreachable unless you first unlock and level up the requisite masteries (gliding, mushroom jumping, etc…). So don’t be surprised if you first have to grind mastery levels before you can complete the jungle hero challenges.
They also have not specified how hard the new challenges will be. Are they comparable to in core tyria (so anywhere from ‘just walk right up to something with no obstacles or threats’ to ‘fight off a dozen vets’) or is a typical new one like taking on a VW champ single-handedly?
Also how many HPs are in the jungle would be nice to know. In the open world I figure the threshold of ones I can solo with reasonable odds is 140-150. So there is no reason to expect that ratio would not be about the same in the jungle.

I’m expecting a big community backlash and hopefully this will be changed. To whomsoever came up with this idea, kitten you… and I don’t really mean “kitten”… you know what I mean…
Oh, there will be a HUGE outcry and backlash. Especially since a lot of people will find out Friday (either by not using forums or wanting to be surprised) when they go to unlock their elites.
I posted to another site about this in our GW2 thread since nobody else there seems to have noticed yet. My first sentence had about a dozen instances of ‘kitten’ as I knew some there would get the reference.

The worst part is that even if we can convince Anet to reduce the hero points needed, it will still probably be too much. I was having nightmare’s about 170 points.
I mean some of us have Jobs and families. How are we supposed to unlock this in a reasonable amount of time after paying for the expansions ahead of time? If I had known this was going to be introduced I would never have bought the expansion.
Youre talking about half mapping two whole zones of hero point challenges….Seriously this is too much for you?
In a word:
YES.
Honestly… if a couple hours of playtime is going to DESTROY YOUR LIFE maybe playing games just isn’t in the cards right now. Pick up a hobby that takes less time from your work/family.
Ask anet, they probably want everyone inworld and happily buying gems instead …
[btw, unless the 40 jungle points are super-fast try them on more than 1 character]

Thanks for the info Colin but it does present a problem.
What about those of us who want to carry on the ‘good fight’ and help the community? IE, be mentors, which means being in central Tyria most of the time. I was already struggling with 170: by what I have seen about 140 they would be ones that soloing would mean dying many times to get the challenge done, especially on characters who have to fight in tight quarters but wear light armor (ie, they can not do the usual staying as far back as possible).

Oh, we do. Even people with world completion (including the HPs in WVW and the wastes) are steaming. Those of us altoholics with ‘only’ 100ish points are fuming. That is just the forum people. Wait until everyone finds out about it.

Again, hero challenges are worth 10 points each in the jungle. So no you don’t need to go do 200-400 jungle challenges.
It would be interesting to see what the average is, especially since those of us with umpteen characters tend not to be zealots about world completion on each one. The guesses have been between 60 and 170 so people have been targeting somewhere in there. I am not just talking the people on the board either as we are a bit more invested in the game than most.
It looks like not many people will really be playing with these for awhile. Who wants to use a trait line with only a few traits in it?
Can we find out how many challenges are in the jungle? Then we can backtrack to how many challenges we need to do of the known ones. BTW, do you need to do them in a certain order or can you leave all the skins and such until last?
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Menadena.7482
Ouch… only half? That’s pretty rough… so it must take 500+ points to do the whole thing I guess…
That was my immediate reaction as practically everyone was preparing based on what number they thought. It looks like we may as well see how many HP nodes are in the new zones rather than questing for any more this week. I foresee a lot of LFGs to get the HOT points.
You can bet the next expansion won’t be 3 years away.
Or at least new sub-professions (elites is a bad word, especially if some become the new normal). It would be the obvious thing to do to build in the hooks to add other ones while they were working on the first set. The main problem is designing the specs and have them be comparable to the existing options.
In fact, that will gum up the works more than anything. Think balancing is hard and happens often? After Friday they jump from balancing 8 to 18. Then most likely adding more sub-professions as time goes by.
I am sure there are topics like ‘what elite is best’ but with search broken and the fact that it might be a necro…
I am hoping for best case of 100 or the standard we pay for any other trait line and group of skills (so 85 or so). I made them all (which cover the existing professions) 105 so I have a little flexibility.
Two I am most interested in are for guardian and elementalist, the two characters of mine I am most meh about. In case it is the 170 I ran HPs with them last night so they would have 120. That will get them a good chunk of what they need.
Both are among my first characters and ones that could use a bit of zazzing up. In the case of the guardian it is a good ranged weapon. For the elementalist just needed a bit to make her not same old-same old, even though chromaster was more interesting (unfortunately my mesmer already had most of the HPs I was getting lately).
My warrior, being my latest character, has plenty of HPs to use. I specifically did not fill the skill and trait lines.
Obviously with only a couple days left I can not get more HPs for every character (and anything beyond 120 will have to wait for after the drop). With the exception of guardian, warrior, and elementalist what order/which professions would you focus on getting HPs for?

Using this article:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Hero_point
I’m going to estimate 60 for the Elite and ~20 for the skills that go with it.
That is what I am hoping too and made sure all of my characters had 105 to give them some breathing room but am giving a couple others some more points in case we get the worse case (the datamined numbers).
I have made this suggestion often but I want a check box that flips between see all and see only what you do not have skins for yet.
Others have added that they would like to see looks of underwater stuff while on land.
The idea would be to have it as a filter. By default you would see everything.
I might actually buy those silly things if you were able to use them on all your characters simultaneously.
Since you can only play 1 character at the time how hard is it to bank the tools and take em out with the new one you log in with?
Easy but annoying. Especially if you are not in the habit of looking at your tools before going adventuring. While I would not go so far as to buy a complete set of those tools for what will be 9 characters next week I would certainly pay a bit more if they worked all the time, no matter what character. You can only be logged in once, so it would not be like they would be in use more than once at a time.
edit: Think of it like a mini. Multiple characters can have the same one but they are not on at the same time anyway.
Now I am curious. What would you need that many mithril ingots for?
The speed always seems fast to me, especially if you compare it to the RL process it is emulating. Sure, a lot of something takes longer but it normally would.
As I subscribe to the Fashion Wars 2 endgame model, I think an option to filter items out of the trading post that use skins you’ve already unlocked would be a great feature to have. Would work really well for dye and mini filtering as well.
I haven’t seen this suggested before, though I’m sure it has been, but figured I’d throw the idea out there.
I have asked for it as well. It would have been a huge help when doing the fashion collector achieve and it still is. I am now in the habit of looking for cool new skins when I am buying a weapon or piece or armor.
Right, but my point was there are crossover topics. Your HOT stuff does not all go bye-bye when you leave a HOT zone. There will be plenty of topics where it will be a judgement call as to which forum it belongs in and not everyone that would want to weigh in will be closely watching both.

If by that you mean we would get the elites much easier than having to hit all the ‘challenges’ of every one of my characters I am all for it. Whether that means what would be the normal cost of a trait line (with or without a REASONABLE quest) or just by dint of being 80s. Sure, I would have preferred to do what I would have normally done the past few weeks, but oh well.

As far as we know the core engine will not change. It is mostly game assets (granted, a lot of them) and tweaks to some of the code.
In addition to supporting multiple cores (does anyone even MAKE single core chips for desktops) I would love to see them fully support 64 bit. The first is efficiency, the latter leads to bugs.
Only one I can find, don’t know how standard it is.
“The Strategist
22% Ace, 44% Effector, 44% Innovator and 56% Strategist!
Strategists are players that like to affect things, i.e. influence game results. Strategists are group-oriented, and as such often serve as great leaders or planners in their party, though they tend to take defender or healer roles on the field. Strategists highly enjoy communicating with others, and this is often one of the prime motivators for their participation in an activity. Games which are solely single player or do not include a strong storyline tend to be unappealing to Strategists unless it appeals to their secondary player nature.
Strategists are often instigators; they like to start games and form teams. Networking between players and other teams is also a specialty of most Strategists, as is knowledge building. They like to use their knowledge base to help them ensure party success, sometimes at a cost to their own character. Strategists can occasionally be narrow or esoteric in their focus, and tend to be slightly obsessive about gathering knowledge on subjects of their interest, but always use that knowledge in service to their compatriots. Offensive Strategists can take slightly more active roles on the field, but rarely play lead on an assault, preferring to wait in the wings for an opportune time to strike. Defensive Strategists often prefer to serve their team through healing or other forms of defense that keep them out of the direct line of battle."
Sounds about right. I am usually organizing Teq while also being on a defense team. I have even gone there with low-level characters and slipped into the same pattern.
What is going slow for you? I can refine a whole stack of something and it will be zipping right along. The slow bit is when I need to do discovery … especially when I miscounted how many of something I would need and do not have the mats on hand to just make it.
Minimal would be ideal. Some stuff to override data mines (maybe a Teq-annoying reboot Thursday night) but most I would hope they just have 10/23 triggers on.
What about crossover topics though? Like talking about elites or masteries in the rest of tyria?
Is it just me or do some of the profession icons seem a bit arbitrary anyway? While some are obvious it is not always the case.
It seems like the lines between the HOT and the ‘classic’ GW forums will get blurred after the 23rd.
edit: ack! no way to correct the typo in the title!
Colin-
Thanks but can we get any info about elite unlocks? That has been a huge issue of debate here.
The wastes have a soundtrack?
I turned off the music early on in favor of playlists for my different characters. Since each one has a part of the map they ‘specialize’ in though (aside from these kittening hero things and gathering WPs) maybe adding some of the tracks for their zones would be a good idea.
If you haven’t noticed, they already had a theme color for HoT, it’s green.
if you haven’t noticed, the OP is playing a pun on the ‘hot pink’ dye, which is an actual dye in the game.
Seriously, am I the only one so far in this thread who got the OP’s joke?
Nope, given what month it is thoughI am not sure if it would be a good idea or a bad idea though.
You mean 80% of guardians aren’t planning on switching anyway since dragonhunter is complete crap and doesn’t address any of the issues guardian has been wanting fixed for years?
I am planning on switching. It does not address everything that makes guardian a profession badly in need of fixing (movement speed for one) but it does address one thing: longbow.
