Mentor-Tag abused as Comm-Tag

Probably 99% of the time you do not need a mentor tag in the higher-level areas …. but everyone has an eyerolling moment where they saw a vet doing something monumentally stupid. Of course, those vets would never admit to needing a mentor.

Commander tags are sometimes the best bet in high level areas, but not always. My fave was running into someone with a ‘been there done that’ tag who was dead so I raised him, even though it was a mob spawning point. He then stood there and the next mob killed him … obviously AFK. I turned my commander tag on so people would not look to that kitty-cat for guidance or raise him in the middle of the metaevent. That was before mentor tags and in sparkfly fen so cases could be made now for either being appropriate.

What would be nice if they added the challenging hero point in the LFG UI.

I have been too busy with the Halloween content but I assume there must be plenty of listings for that under living world in the LFG? Or do they have a HOT category now?

(enter labyrinth, no tag of any sort on map, nobody around)

/map where is the zerg?

“the northwest corner”

(run there, of course they have moved on)

/map does anyone mind if I put up my commander tag?

(pause, no reply so do so)

People come running back to where I am: “thank you!”

Yes, there is a need for tags. The problem is getting people to see tagging up with either tag as a responsibility rather than as an ego trip. Like when I disconnected the other day while leading the zerg. When I reconnected I saw someone else had tagged up and I was HAPPY to turn my tag off and follow for a change.

This comes up now and then and I am guessing it would get a lot of use. When going from one event to another I would like a way to change my traits, skills, weapons, even outfits and minis … but rarely have a chance to do so. If I am lucky maybe equip a different weapon. It would also help to ‘remember’ good builds so you can experiment with others more freely.

I DEMAND this filthy tag be removable from my screen. Add an option IMMEDIATELY :P to not see this information bureau nonsense, because you already got me kittened on so many other fronts, I can’t even list them on 100 lines.

PS: also add option to not see commander tags, but make them 2 separate options.
PPS: stop putting non-stop humming in azura cities (eg Rata Novus story) as your background noise because it drives me nuts.

You demand? Yeah, good luck with that. As to the noise, just turn your sound off (yes, I have played that way before and it is possible, everything you really need is in text).

As I keep saying both tags have a reason to exist. I do not see much of a problem with options to turn them off but I expect people not to be using them as much once the novelty wears off. Just like those dragon minis were on almost everyone awhile back but now you rarely see one.

I hope they completely remove commander tag from PvE. You “command” solely in wvw. That was its original purpose. Spending 300g doesn’t mean you deserve more vanity points in pve than anyone else, including mentors.

Actually, I would object to that as it is of tremendous help in PVE as well. Think big events like Teq. Think finding the zerg in the labyrinth.

What is ideal is if people are not using it when not needed. The rule of thumb I use is if a tag is not helping someone else/the map it should not be on …. full stop. Unfortunately not everyone is that conscientious.

Removing the commander tag from PVE would force the legitimate users of a command tag to use a mentor tag …. which is not appropriate for the situation. If I am fractically trying to organize something I will try to help a person that whispers me with a question but it will not have my attention. So it will frustrate both commanders forced to use a mentor tag and people looking for mentors who contacted a commander. I have both tags. If I am walking around a low level area that either means a mentor tag or none (MAYBE you can make a case for low level bosses, especially the SB pres where people are asking if anyone is doing them). If I am organizing something/leading a zerg that means a commander tag is appropriate.

If someone does not have a commander tag and needs one is the only sticky situation. I would suggest asking someone else in the zerg/nearby to pop a commander tag.

Otherwise Cursed Shore is the 2nd best place to grind out Tyra masteries followed by SW

I love SW for events. You are in one or another practically all the time. I do Teq a lot but it does not have the best xp/time ratio … for 4 events (any/all of them can fail) it may seem like 15 minutes but you really need to be there at least half an hour before it starts to get a good map.

Right now I am leveling my revenant and decided to only tome her to 55. She gained 4 levels last night just in the mad king’s labyrinth. Unfortunately that method is bugged for mastery xp.

So what is the actual solution here? Would people who just wanted vanity tags be happy(or less unhappy) with a refund of their 100 or 300 gold?

What if the Mentor Tag and overhead icon were simpler? I’d prefer if the Mentor icon was a simple white/transparent circle with a lowercase “i” in it. Or just the lowercase “i”, if the circle/“i” combo is too complex for map icon display. And Mentor Tags should definitely not be in a color that Commander Tags can use. Would that make the Mentor Tag/Icon “uncool” enough for you to justify the 100 or 300 gold spent on what amounts to an over-priced vanity tag? I’m seriously asking.

I’d prefer if they made a free vanity tag, which you got after completion of the level 10 block of Personal Story, or for some other early goal in PvP or WvW. But all tags would have check boxes in the options menu, so each player would be able to see or hide any of the tag types at their option.

There is no excuse to make the Free version better designed than the original payed version. You can sugar coat it all you want and try to switch into different arguments, but that point still stands.

Vanity is a factor, There is no logical reason to give the free version that EVERYONE can get within 15 minutes better design.
Either make the Mentor tag small/uglier. Or actually make the commanders more impressive.

When you’re a new player and walk into a map that has one mentor and one red commander tag. You’d most likely assume the ‘Original/Better’ one would be the mentor.
It’s much easier to notice. bigger in size, and arguably better designed.
Also, a guy talking next to you having a chat title,A feature NOBODY has aside from devs. REALLY?

And again, The Squad upgrades are AMAZING, and a happy addition. But don’t benefit PVE commanders one bit.You simply don’t use Squad chat for anything aside from Triple trouble.

So there you have it, the whole reason is to get a ‘better looking’ tag. You say vanity is a factor, it should never be. If you got the commander tag to actually command you could give a hoot how it looked compared to other tags.

As to the squad changes, it has some serious problems as-is. The biggest one for me is I can not organize an event and join a pre-existing party (which, yes, I need to do often). No, telling them to disband and join my squad is not an option either as they would not be seeing the stats for the other people (or, I assume, even how many if they are bunched up).

BTW, the complaint that a new player would go to the better looking tag is confusing since it sounds like you are saying mentor’s tags look better. I would rather have new players (and any players with questions) coming to me when I am wearing a mentor tag and vets coming to me when I am, oh, commanding.

The two tags are not interchangeable. Yes, they both put an icon on the map and over your head. Actually, I would like to see small dots for everyone, just as you now do for people in your guild, party, and I think squad. It can be tremendously handy for situations like trying to find the current thing on a map when nobody is tagged up.

There is absolutely no pleasing some people, is there.

If you have a few toons – one of each profession, this 250 is easier to attain than the 400.
For those that have one profession for each race – or one profession for each gender and each race… you brought that whole thing on yourself. The development team is not required to make things easier for someone that has decided to have 10, 15 or 20+ toons.

They dropped the 400 to 250 and still you complain.

Of course 250 is easier than 400. The number 399 is less than 400 too, just as 10 is. Your point?

Look at it this way. GW2 encourages alts. Which makes sense given we are shelling out 10 USD for each one. Say an average altoholic has one of each class.

By what definition is 2250 hero points ‘easy’?

The comparison is poor. 250 is much easier than 450 as opposed to 399’s minutely so.

What do you think is fair? It is an Elite Spec which lets a normal class play in a different way. Do you think those should just be handed to you? Do you think just because people have several Alts (I have 16) that it should be cheap.

As I said earlier, no matter what they dropped the cost to, people would never be happy. I am glad to see that most others are happy with the drop and are recognizing that.

Where did 450 come from?

One more time, they are elite in name only. Some of them are not worth giving up a trait line. I still want the chance to try them all out to see which ones fit my playstyle though.

Since the specializations do not give inherent advantages I would say the exact amount every other trait line and skill ‘line’ would be fair. Which means 85-90. I could agree to 100 though.

There was a MASSIVE backlash to when 250 was datamined. Even the 170 for just the traits/skills seemed too high to be true to many. Before that most were guessing somewhere below world completion (which is 179 points, not 214) as that is what we were told.

Once again, all these are are just new mechanics. I bought HOT specifically for the new mechanics (which they were advertising heavily) and do not care for the new regions. Any of my characters that go there would be more like tourists there than not.

120 (the double of a usual spec) would have been perfect. People could have chosen to do them in central Tyria OR in Maguuma, which would have given us so much more freedom.

That is my feeling as well. Since I have never felt the pressing need to do map completion with every class I was doing the HP slog with all of them at the same time. No cheats like stealthing in, actually fighting whatever. Before HOT my highest HP on a single character was 120 (most were at 105 or slightly above) and, based on what I was seeing, 140 or so would have been about the end of soloable points.

I do not want to go into the jungle with a class I do not want to explore it with all so I can get the class that I DO want to explore it with. As it is right now I will have to do what a lot of people are doing: when the Halloween events end look for HP trains in LFG.

My big concern is anet is going “job well done everyone” and thinking 250 is reasonable. Read the forums from before we knew it would be more HP than were in central Tyria.

Mentor Fake Tag

And who says mentors can’t be mentors in level 80 zones?

I’d say, if you’ve got a mentor tag up in any zone, you’re asking to be asked for help with hero challenges or events. So start bugging those with mentor tags for help with events and hero challenges. Make them realize that the mentor tag isn’t the poor man’s commander’s tag.

Dude thats the problem here. They dont use Mentor Tags for helping new players. They are using them as hurr “Free Commandership” durr.

But you don’t know that, right? For all you know, they’re a legit mentor. So treat them as such.

Okay i ll give it to you in simpler words

Commander Tag Commanding
Mentor Tag Mentoring

Simple as that

You’re not getting what I’m saying.

If you see someone with a mentor tag up. Treat them like a mentor. Don’t let them turn it into the poor man’s commander tag.

If you see a mentor trying to be a commander when there’s an active commander there, remind others that he’s just a mentor and not a commander and to follow the actual commander. Or ask that he swap to an actual commander tag if he’s going to command.

And for all you know, the mentor is an actual commander and he’s just forgotten to switch to his actual commander tag when he came over to the level 80 zone from a starter zone where he was being a mentor.

Too good to be true. And i actually whispered a mentor to give up his Mentor Tag and to let an actual Commander to do the job and he replied with a rude no. As i was trying to take him a privilege or something.

and what makes you think your commander tag trumps his mentor tag? And what makes you think you are entitled to take over from what that mentor was doing?

Shame on you.

Neither trumps the other, that is the point. If a situation calls for a commander it needs a commander. If a situation calls for a mentor it needs a mentor.

I am struggling to think of where both would be appropriate in the same scenario with the same people.

For example, when showing new people where a low-level boss is a mentor tag would fit the bill. During the fight itself it would not (usually it would be no tag unless you are organizing something, 4 or 5 commander tags at the jungle wurm is just a bunch of people who are a bit too insecure).

What I don’t understand with the Mentor tag is that you can activate it in lvl 80 zones. This is supposed to be used for mentoring new players so in should be in lower level zones, ok not necessarily only in starting areas but after level 70 they shouldn’t be used anymore. And also having a limit on the number of tag per maps could be a nice idea b/c in some maps every player is mentoring… but the question is : is there still anybody w/o the tag to be mentored?

Ummm…

Yes, by the time you are 80 you should not need a mentor. It is not uncommon to run into 80s who know less than someone who just joined though.

There are reasons for mentor tags. There are reasons for commander tags. I plan on using both at different times, it all comes down to which is appropriate. Most of the time the answer is ‘neither’. The only reason to complain about tags on the map that pretty much anyone can get is because the commander tag was bought to show off.

I bought a commander tag to mostly do mentoring. Then I found out about the mentor tags a few months later. Was I annoyed? Anyone would be because people had been asking for that exact thing for a long time, then breaking down and buying a commander tag as the closest option. Was I upset that everyone had a tag? No.

The only real problem I can see is if we see a flood of these tags being used (after the novelty has worn off) by people who have no interest in mentoring.

I like how this is (or used to be?) for all types of gamers. From casual to hardcores. From people who enjoy battling NPCs to going after each other.

Even though I play in pretty much all of my free time some will derogatorily say I am a casual player as if it were an insult. So? Is it some sort of a fault that I would rather be playing what I like (which means fleshing out stories and backgrounds) than trying to play the way someone else enjoys?

If anything anet has done too much for ‘hardcore’ gamers (for example, I still think the lowered HP threshold is too high and that limit applies to casuals and hardcores alike). As was said, there are plenty of games out there that cater to hardcores. They do not bring in the money though as their focus is not on things like gem store items as much.

I like that everyone can play the way that is most fun for them. As long as they do not try to make the game less fun for others. Unfortunately anet needs to learn that concept too it seems.

this is a bad thing for the ones who grinded the way to 100% elite before the patch, because for the ones that did…. the feeling of accomplishment, and working towards a goal, a reward, yeah…. that feeling was robbed from us. so we went through that painful grind for nothing…. -.-

translation: You are mad that you missed the first week of Halloween content. No, you people close to/at 400 were not ‘robbed’ of anything as the points are still there. Just more people are close to/at what they need now. The fact that you got around 200 points so fast pretty much shows it was not hard for you.

If it makes you feel better it is still hard for us alt-o-holics. Especially for our thieves and any other character we consider weak.

The term ‘elite specs’ is just a marketing term. They have been promoting them since day 1. There was every implication of them representing leveling our characters to 80, hence ‘elite’ compared to characters not there yet. Possibly with some reasonable gating.

As I said, 100 is what I consider reasonable. No, 214 is not ‘world completion’ for people who did not do it awhile back, 179 is.

I still maintain that 250 is insane for altoholics and revenants, both of which will need more jungle points than the average bear. Not to mention altoholics having ‘classic’ classes we would not want to use in the jungle (so we usually even have ones we do not like).

Putting it at 250 is still too high.

For most of us, the characters we want to try something different on are our worst ones. That means they are the least likely to have world completion and would have to get points in VB. Most of those would have a rough time just in the SW and starting the story to open the gate.

My line in the sand is still 100 points.

While I am not advocating any form of griefing there is a slight tradition in second life. If someone afks you are allowed to utilize the fact that their avatar is physical (within reason) if there is a legitimate reason to move them.

So it is not uncommon for someone to leave for an hour and come back to find their avatar has been pushed out of the way of an event. There is a simple workaround though: if you sit you can not be moved. As far as I know though there is not an equivalent in GW2.

I ran into a non-game version of this in college. I was using an 80s mainframe, so no such thing as a GUI. Anyway, a meeting and my machine did not log off completely. I got home to find out my boss had set my command prompt to the clear screen character before logging me out.

Charr story – 3 pts
Sylvari story – 3 pts
Norn story – 1 pt (I have not done the PS for a Norn so tested a chapter last night)
Asura story – 3 pts

Looks like I will be filing a support ticket tonight. I am hoping I will get those 18 points as I would like to get my pact commander line.

As long as people use the mentor tag it was intended once the novelty wears off, and not as an e-kittycat, things will work out.

I purchased mine to help in mentoring and do not regret having it. Now I also use it to help with events, where it is appropriate since we have the mentor tags for my original use.

As I noticed someone mentioning earlier, I am one of those who bought gems to get it. Not because I could not save up the gold, but because I wanted to keep my cost for it separate from everything else (so I bought as close to the right amount of gems as possible). So people do not always go that route for nefarious purposes. Plus you still need to do a little WVW content.

I am confused too as I looked at the wiki page and my HOT main does not jibe with their list but my tyria-only alt is much closer. For example, I am not getting ANY points at all for my personal story. I have also done the KQ multiple times and my main says the achievement is still outstanding.

None of the norn’s story is even listed in the achievements list. Since I only have 1 norn (and they have not started the story yet) I decided to do 1 chapter as an experiment. I got 10 AP (despite my main not showing it but my alt account seeing it in the list) but no mastery points.

If I should have gotten mastery points for each new chapter (so 3 per race, 3 per order, and 1 for each level of the pact) I am short a LOT of mastery points. A bug with HOT maybe? If so a vexing one for central Tyria players.

Are we supposed to get mastery points for each chapter? It is that way according to the wiki. Making it stranger, before there were APs one for each chapter but now it seems to only be for 2 places in the story (your fear and completion) as I level up the Norn’s story.

To add further confusion, after doing the first chapter in the Norn’s story last night I got 10 AP (even though it is not listed as an achievement). No mastery point out of it though.

I can see the achievements (not sure if they had mastery points, I am thinking yes but need to check) on my alt account. Not on my main account though.

So this brings me back to the question of if I should be getting mastery points for the personal story. It also looks like I did not get them for chapters I have done.

I very STRONGLY vote no.

I know all the the things on a map a person being tutored would need to know. I can NOT complete most of the vistas, which are like mini jumping puzzles to me. I am fine with not having 100% map/world completion (except for missing out on the mastery point) but I should not be penalized for not having done what are often essentially jumping puzzles by another name. I am a mentor in another game (and was even part of their official mentor program while they had one) so know a bit more about what new players do and how to help them than someone that runs around doing maps by rote.

Or does it?
EVERY progress could be called “gate” with this mindset.

Not really. Sure, everyone would love to be max level on day 1 but it is an accepted part of gaming that you do something or other to get there. What this is is effectively adding new levels without saying they added new levels.

If they just broke down and added levels that were account bound for your 80, fine, there would not be as much complaining. It is that they also said you had to do mastery points. There are 19 just for pact commander. I have only 13. Hover over your personal stories sometime, they did not give you a story point (I tested this too since my norn had not even started the PS yet). Aside from it seemingly being random and not rewarding their featured content (the PS) it has not awarded me the KQ one yet … despite however many times I have done it. Sure, if you did the LW story you have lots of points, but like I say it is random not ‘play your own way’.

Turn your graphics settings to the minimum. It is also helpful to reboot the game before a major event if you can.

I looked on the wiki and am already seeing both achieves listed that are not showing for me and ones I did not get a mastery point for and it says I should. Of course, it is a wiki …

re: suppression – Well, even if you’re careful to vary your wording, suppression will still trigger at a certain threshold of map/say chats during a certain span of time. Suppression while commanding/organizing is absolutely a thing. If you haven’t seen it yet, it just means that you haven’t seen it yet.

/map could someone take turret 4 please?
Your message has been suppressed due to excessive messaging.

(yes, this was about the exact message I was sending once when it kicked in at Teq)

I am not sure who gets more frustrated. The commander or the rest of the players.

Running a commander tag in PvE is useless and annoying. WvW it is useful for running events and leading attacks. In PvE ut is comical. You don’t need a tag at world boss events with the exception of Tripled Threat and TQ. The Mentor tag is hopefully going to help those that need assistance in PvE.

Which is where I use it most of the time (Teq). Sometimes it helps on occasion to highlight where some event is for new people in starter zones but having a rainbow of tags at jungle wurm is just plain overkill.

re: In fact, it is even less useful with events as I can not join a party – You can join/be in a party with either of these tags. Unless something has changed in the last two days? A Commander cannot be a member of another squad, however.

Actually, in the squad interface they betaed during BWE3 you could not be a commander and in a party at the same time. I always do that for a defense party, as it helps to convince people to do the same if I have already done what I am asking of them.

Battelle nailed it.

Indeed he did.
Only thing I would add is we need a Mentor Abuse report function.

You can probably just use the normal reporting function for most cases. Unfortunately that does not cover if someone has a pattern of giving some obviously bad advice where any one line can be categorized as a ‘slip’.

On the mini map the mentor tag is bigger and better designed,so if i was a new player and didnt know better id follow the mentor and not the com

So it works exactly like it is designed to.

So it was designed to kitten over any com outside of WVW? Seems pretty fair.

No, but I suppose it was designed to attract new players who do not know any better yet.

And in turn kittening over any player that bought a tag for PVE purposes.

Especially those of us who bought it specifically to mentor.

Not that I mind terribly. I use it when needed as a commander tag (nobody else wants to lead a zerg or organizing things) but I do not need the other things a commander tag does, like forming squads or checking supplies. In fact, it is even less useful with events as I can not join a party (I often do to show people I am putting my money where my mouth is by asking them to do the same) with the interface they tested but am not clear if you can with mentor tags. If so there will be a LOT of confusion as people get forced into using mentor tags.

There’s a few easy ones:

- Karka Queen
- Triple Trouble, 3 points for each head, then 1 after getting 3 of them (IIRC)
- If you can find people to do Story Mode with you, it’s not that bad either
- Living Story, do the ones you can if you don’t wanna spend gold/gems
- Tequatl Achievements, might take some time and effort, but definitely doable as a new player
- A lot of easy achievements in Fractals… Easier now that it is 1 island and you can pick and choose which ones to go. Go to the ones that’s lower than level 10. Refer to the Fractals wiki page for the Island you want to go.

To find more, just go to your Hero Panel (H) and look at Achievements Panel. The ones labled red are for specifically for Tyria Masteries (Green for Maguuma).

Thanks, if you have lots of gold (or are willing to part with some cash) check out the emperor’s wardrobe too. Not only will you get a MP but some skins.

BTW, is the KQ achieve bugged or something? I have done it multiple times but the achievement still shows as never having been done.

It seems all messed up. I have tons of achievements but am lousy at jumping puzzles (yes, even many vistas) and pvp strikes me as eww (I view other players as allies, not competition). I was granted all of 13 mastery points. Guess most of what remains to get mastery points? Yep, JPs and and PVP.

It is really messed up. Sometimes an event will give the info, other times the event will not even show up outside of seeing where the circle is.

Look at the primary target audience: new players. It is much easier to /map chat to find the yellow triangle or a mentor tag then giving an update every 10 minutes of where you are.

Still question stands: what for did people pay gold for tags?

For leading zergs in WvW, forming squads and for the supply commands.

Until the mentor tag we had no real equivalent in PVE. Sometimes it is ‘hey, boss, over here’ other times it is ‘person you MIGHT want to listen to in the event over here’.

Of course, there is nothing to stop people from tagging up just because they can. I would encourage responsible use (ie, tagging up if it benefits the map/group then tagging down at the end).

Ugg if they did this.

When I do Teq (or any boss really) and get killed (usually rezzing someone or such) it is heading back from the second nearest WP. For some this is a matter of running back. For others it is a bit more challenging.

There is also the problem of when 2 or more events are next to each other. You can be dealing with mobs in one event and the mobs you start attacking may be part of the event next to it and there is no good way to tell.

Elite Specializations & Hero Point Feedback [Merged]

This has been a two day read. And I definitely see why.

First, a story. I been avoiding most of the hype and information about the expansion, it’s how I deal with every game. But I seen videos about the specializations, I been informed by friends what they like about what they been shown, it’s all good. But I also remain withdrawn to the hype, I want to see the expansion in action, to go on an adventure myself.

I did buy it beforehand, as an altoholic it solved two issues at once for me.

I was avoiding a lot of stuff too. I liked what I did see though and did the preorder, not so I would have access to the BWEs (I did not want to spoil too much of the surprise so completely skipped BWE3 and only played BWE2 long enough to WP out of the jungle). I was looking for mechanics, not content. We were essentially doubling our professions and when you have plenty of characters having them do different things is somewhat appealing.
