Tyria Mastery Point need more way to earn it

I feel for you. I have done PLENTY in central Tyria and only have 13 mastery points. Out of the remaining ones most of them come down to jumping puzzles and PVP. Sorry, but I am rubbish at JP (yes, I have tried them) and PVP seems a bit backwards to me in an environment where I think of everyone as potential allies rather than competition. Some people find those 2 fun, so I am glad they are here for them, but why decide I should do the things I hate most?
Out of the mastery points it seems one is … strange. I have done KQ multiple times yet I have never gotten the achievement for it.
I love mentoring. To fully unlock the pact commander line though I seem to need 19 points? It seems they were somewhat randomly (and annoyingly) assigned: I only have 13 for some reason, despite having quite a few achievements unlocked. I guess I should have been doing things like jumping puzzles (which I can never do) instead of obvious things like personal stories and fighting bosses.
edit: BTW, some of the achievements I should have earned, like the karka queen, I did not … so much for that mastery point.
Mentors actually devote our time to helping the company. We increase player retention … and do it in our time in the game because we love it. We are practically volunteers … unpaid employees. At least give us the tools for a reasonable investment of effort.
Please anet, give us a better way to earn mastery points. You are at a distinct disadvantage if you have no interest in non-pve content and are rubbish at jumping puzzles.

Hey folks,
Lots of passionate feedback and discussion in here on either side, and a friendly reminder that constructive feedback helps us make better games (please do keep it constructive!) We don’t always get every detail perfect the first time, but I like to think one of our strengths is we’re always open to and listening to feedback from our community and making good decisions based on that feedback.
Ultimately, we’re thrilled with the parts of HoT everyone is enjoying. Your passion is awesome, and it’s part of why we all love creating this game. In particular, in game we’ve seen a really positive reaction to the game from folks who are busy playing, which has been really cool to see.
While we never like to rush and make snap decisions, in particular with a game that’s basically been out less than three days; I think there are some fair points in here for us to discuss. Much like other feedback about HoT, we’ll be discussing this as well!
Thanks again!
Too little, to late i’m afraid Col. People are slating the expansion all over the net, you have committed the cardinal sin in gaming of alienating your casual player. The casuals are the ones that keep a game ticking over, pay for the newest skin, like to change their character design and pay for it.
Your current model will see these players leave in droves and will ultimately kill the game.
Colin-
Therein lies the problem. You had managed to do what a lot of games fail at: appeal to players of all styles at the same time. Since I do not do things like PVP and jumping puzzles I get labeled a casual … despite that I play around 40 hours a week and have sunk more money into this that most subscription games.
I already knew I would not be as interested as much about the new maps (I suppose I will look around, but as a tourist and not worrying about doing anything). I loved the new mechanics though and bought the elite version specifically because I liked some of the elites. OK, I did not have map completion (casual again) but did not think you would want EVERY hero challenge on the map. Much less that you would want more than that.
To add insult to injury you decided to do the same with hero challenges to central Tyria. I am a mentor. I bought a commander tag just to do so. I actually want to HELP in player retention. So now to get all of the tools to help me in that … I need to get mastery points beyond what I have. The ones remaining are things like jumping puzzles and PVP, things I will never do. I have PLENTY of achievements done: half my characters have done the battle of fort Trinity, skads of collections, every achievement in Teq (most multiple times over), every boss I can think of multiple times, defeated various legendaries, bought skads of skins, leveled all my crafts, over 5000 AP (not all from dailies), on and on. Even attempted ones I knew at the start I would not be able to do. So what do I find? I have only 13 of the 19 kitty-cat points I need to fully be a mentor.
I do not have as much a problem with grinding XP in central Tyria. After all, I have been doing it for a year so 19 levels is next to nothing there. I ask for 2 things:
1) Like everyone else, reevaluate how to get elite specs. If someone is not interested in the new areas they should not have to step foot in there at all. Maybe add a central-tyria-use-only form of an unlock? Make it easier to obtain for the people that use those areas too though.
2) Reevaluate how we get masteries in central Tyria. Right now to get the ones I need to help you I have to do things I know at the outset I would not choose to do (nor are they ‘easy’). If you have a lot of achievements you should have a lot of mastery points.
Riddle me this. What sort of an impression of GW2 you think people will get (and hence likelihood of sticking around and giving you $$) if their mentor has a bad attitude about the game?
As a mentor I am essentially working for you for free. I just want the tools that could help me do so. I have seen other games that were hostile to the mentor program and it did not work out so well for them.
Didn’t you know?
Gee, I guess Anet forgot to tell you, end game (HoT) is all about group content (Raids, PvP, Fractals, Guilds, etc), casual PVE is Dead going forward.
GW2 Just went from a mainly casual PVE, to a group play game with this expansion, Some one wanted to put the Guild back into Guild Wars.
Funny, how they forget to tell every one!!
Yes, from what I have been reading the people that mainline jold and play everything hardcore 24/7 love this stuff. I was only convinced to try GW2 because it had something for everyone, including us casuals. Or should I say ‘used to have’?
I am not interested in doing jumping puzzles and such. They are here for those that want them, great. Just do not make those of us that are not spending our time here doing JPs do them now.
How would you rate the HoT Fun Factor?
10 being the most fun
and 0 being the least fun.

This has soured all of HOT for me. Sure, there are other things in it but as long as they are associated with this kittied up cat they will never be as enjoyable as they could be.
As many have said, we were sold on “buy this and you get to play the professions ….. whenever we actually release”. Well, we trusted you anet and gave you our money. Then you basically took that trust and said ‘kitten you kittens, thanks for the dough’.
Guess what? Most people in a game came there from another game …
People with a mentor tag may actually be commanders though. One time I was in a hurry in the party interface and hit the wrong button since they are right next to each other. I have also seen it being used in place of the commander tag, at least in the Halloween labyrinth.
Hopefully we will get to a state where mentors are mentors and commanders are commanders soon.
It would really help with events, for both commanders and everyone else, especially when people try to sabotage it by causing confusion.
I was already leery of doing Halloween activities once I noticed I was not getting the XP applied to my masteries. Knowing it is a bug at least normally gives us hope that nobody planned this and it is being fixed. The knowledge that it will not be fixed before the festival ends makes it much worse though.
I do have to wonder what is going on. We have already have had several builds today. Why is this one, which affects everyone owning HOT and participating in the events, not even going to be looked at until after the festival?
Thanks Gaile, but since this is a bug why not, oh, fix it? Any other bug would get that consideration but this is a big one.
Will we get the experience credited to us after the festival?
We have a rock-and-a-hard-place decision. To have fun in the labyrinth or leave it to train up our central tyria masteries. Obviously we do not know the code but xp is xp so…
Yeah but doing events we’ve done hundreds or thousands of times before already just isn’t fun.
Well, I mean, that’s part and parcel for the genre unfortunately. in a perfect world game developers could put out content faster than we could eat it up, but in reality that’s just not possible, so at some point you’re gonna be repeating stuff
They have content they can use but are not though. There is absolutely no reason why the xp from the Halloween events can not be used.
“We don’t make grindy games.”
“No, you cannot play as a Reaper until you’ve “acquired” more Hero Points."
“No, you cannot…”
etc, etc, etcIt’s almost as if you need to play the game to play the game…I’d be furious if I was forced to play a game I’d purchased. I’d go and speak up in the senate about it, the world needs to know your plight.
“Alright! I have wanted to watch this show ever since it started! Now I finally have a huge chunk of free time and I bought the blu-rays for the whole 5 seasons!”
(whirr) (click) “Huh? What is this message?”
“In order to maximize your enjoyment of the first five episodes they will only be fully unlocked when you have watched the entirety of episodes 6 through the finale. That is the way we like to watch shows so you should too!”
As much as you anet excusers try to downplay it a large part of what we were sold WAS the mechanics (look at practically everything they have hyped about HOT since the announcement). Yes, they are called elites, but everyone took that as meaning you were a level 80 and anet never once corrected that. It is not like they are some all-powerful professions as some are worse than the base one so there was no hint at all that there was anything extra-special about them.

At first I thought.. well, I’ll do the Mad King’s Labyrinth, at least that only comes around once a year so it’s not TOO stale
None of the xp counted towards my core mastery.
That is what I thought too and I only HOPE it is a bug. There is no use doing any open world events in the next few weeks. Things all over are failing rather spectacularly because everyone is either doing Halloween stuff or HOT. Fine, I would have been in the labyrinth anyway so will advance that way …. nope.
When I first saw them not showing up in the upper right block I thought something was set wrong … but then another event showed up that I was at …. and other events did not after it.

They took our excess Skill Points and gave us Spirit Shards.
Solution:
Let us turn in Spirit Shards for Hero Points. Done, easy.
Divided among all your characters and with the prices they have per skill/trait …

That’s why it’s called an “elite” specialization. You have to work to get it. Did you guys think you would start HoT with almost everything already unlocked?
Yes. I paid puppying $100 after they were selling us on the mechanics.

What the kitten?
The number is WAY beyond 400!
Is it intended to do that or is it a bug?
After doing the prologue, t the survivor’s camp I chose to look for turret parts (I decided to do something different than what I did during the BWEs). I found myself trapped in an airship after there was a rubble collapse. Asking my guild for suggestions I was told to try logging out than back in again. When I did it wanted me to run the prologue again but just let me run to the end and take the portal into the first story step where I decided to play it safe and make a different decision at the camp.
Dry Top & Silverwastes
Lost Bandit Chests across Silverwastes.
Buried Locked Chests across Dry Top.Case you dont have many try : The best place IMHO to get OBSIDIAN SHARDS is the Karma Merchant, Tactician Deathstrider in the Temple of Balthazar when it is uncontested (rarely) for 2100 Karma each. The most likely time is when the server is busiest.
By mats
I used to think the Karma merchant there was the way to go but hanging around the SW I wind up getting more ascended mats for the bank and PLENTY of obsidian.
I finally decided it was time to make a full set of ascended gear, only to realize I only have one empyreal star…What is the fastest way to get the fragments?
I have the opposite problem. Some of the world bosses drop them like candy.
12 hrs, 30 minutes …..
Do events in as high a level zone as possible. Do hearts in as low a level zone as possible. If you find an event next to a heart? Double win!
There are places on the map that have events running pretty much all the time. Northern Wayfarer Foothills (several metaevents near each other). The festival in Diessa Plateau (handily near where the Wayland events are). The centaur war in Kessex Hills (plus the toxic creatures) can have you running from events to event constantly. Plus there are plenty of other events that either spawn quickly or are on a schedule (like bosses, which usually have a few preevents).

I really can’t feel sorry for those people. Nobody ever said that doing World Completion will grant a big advantage to Espec unlock, ever. People assumed it would and played accordingly.
They did say, “The new system will come to the live game before the launch of Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns™, allowing players to experience the changes to core specializations and stockpile Hero Points for their elite specializations. While elite specializations will be available to everyone who purchases the expansion, the upcoming core specialization changes will affect the base game.”
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/ready-up-core-specializations-summary/Yeah I know that article. So yes stockpile…
In fact those who have done so have a 50% advantage on the other, you can have up to half your mastery track unlocked in 18 hours…. not so bad. I don’t see written “… and stockpile Hero Points to fully unlock their elite specialization as soon as the expansion will be released”It is interesting to hear Colin say world completion was around 200 points (he does not know the #? really?). World completion is 179 points. Yes, I know there are more in the borderlands and such, but they have not been part of world completion for awhile now.
I had figured I would get to 140 or so then do a LFG so a bunch of us could help each other with the challenges we were each unable to solo. I have all of my characters above 100 and my original plans were to have my ones most in need of the new specs to have at least 120 by launch.
Don’t know what world completion you’re going, but I have over 200 points and I’m not even done on my Theif
According to wiki there are only 202 hero challenges in the (current) world (189 pve, 3 per bl, and 4 in eb). Oddly, I could swear that have 214 on my ele, and she has everything unlocked. Confuzzled….
Gonna have to recheck that when I get home.
Ah, 189 …. I was thinking 1-something-nine but goofed the 7 for an 8. Part of the problem is all the HPs used to be part of world completion. Since they are still there to do (whether you do them now or before the change) it means your hero points may or may not be equal to how many hero point challenges the main map says you have done.
My ranger picked up a few in the SW. This caused a huge ‘huh?’ from me trying to figure out the discrepancy.

Open a map sometime and you will see the number it counts in the upper left.
Plenty of choices. I did the 8 existing crafts on my first 4 characters and since then have only used 1 craft on 1 character to gain some more xp because I was lazy.
Any new information? I am on a laptop with the sound turned off so not the most ideal viewing environment.
It will be interesting to see some of the details. For example, what is involved in getting pact mastery up to things like the mentor tag.
I’m curious about that track’s xp requirements as well. I know several of us are aiming for that loot hoover capability as quickly as possible.
Yes, having to go around to everything during the fight and check their pockets is annoying. The REAL pain in the neck is when, after a boss fight, your client crashes while everyone surges towards the chest. Or a champ is downed and you can not find the chest.
I am really looking forward to that mentor tag though. It is what I bought my commander tag to do but is a bit more obvious.
I have well over 400. /smug
…scattered across 17 or so characters. /cry
One main with world completion, so he’s halfway ready for HoT. /yay
…as a Berserker. /cry
I have 800+ across my horde. Too bad we can not combine them.
I was stingy with my thief and 150 or so HPs just went poof last night to level everything to 100%. Not a good feeling. None are at world completion (ie, 179) but none are below 100 either.
It will be interesting to see some of the details. For example, what is involved in getting pact mastery up to things like the mentor tag.
What is my mood? That we will have Halloween content tomorrow.
What about the various items that grant influence to a guild? Will they just grant the new token(s) or will they just be inventory clutter now?
Am I right that we will get those points for content in the areas and they will probably be similar to the achievements list (kill this legendary, do all the teq challenges, etc). Also for both HOT and non-HOT areas would any character’s experience somewhere be applicable (hello level-up tomes).
I did read on one of their posts that they would be retroactive if we had already done whatever but I was just making sure I had the same impressions everyone else has.

So maybe we will have all the hero point challenges lined up at the zone entrance for us?
That would be a great compromise I think
Unlikely but it would be a nice surprise. With so many people entering HOT all at once it would basically be run up, get in a hit or two if there is a guard, then commune or grab the item.
I doubt anyone expects that though. Which makes it all the more annoying when people go ‘oh, it is only 40 HPs, that is easy’.

Many people are acting like those of us who are upset are being entitled and that we should have been prepared to play the content to enjoy the progression.
First off, this aspect wasn’t touted as progression. Mastery was. This was something everyone had anticipated on enjoying from the get go. This isn’t “skipping” content. Everyone here wants to play the new zones and quests with the elite spec we’ve waited months for. The sad part is that many players will have played through nearly all the novel content before they can get the elite spec. I had imagined that I’d be playing my reaper with my twilight or eternity at maguuma tomorrow night. Now I realize that I’ll be running around with that stupid dagger that has made necro so irrelevant for so long. My wife and I both made legendaries for these characters’ elite specs. We have been waiting to equip them. Alas, we will continue to wait because Anet drops a bomb on us last minute.
Secondly, we’ve a right to complain when they tell us, right before launch that the aspect that most players are most excited about has a huge amount of effort required to obtain.
Lastly, players were explicitly told that their efforts in map completion would pay off and that they’d have enough HP for elite specs. Now, right before launch, after many of us spent months gridning those stupid challenges across over a dozen characters, they tell us that our efforts were both A) not enough and
absurdly inefficient because hero challenges in maguuma are worth ten times as much as they are in Tyria.
And yes, we should play the content yada yada yada. But don’t encourage your whole player base to prepare for something then pull the rug out from beneath them right before their efforts are about to pay off.
Yes, I have been carrying around the new weapons for at least a month just waiting to equip them. Now I have to decide if I want to basically sacrifice one of my 3 trait lines with an incomplete one just to be able to equip the weapon.
For my guardian and necro the answer will probably be yes since they need those new weapons more than the traits, but not exactly happy about it. All my other characters will be kittened though as sacrificing a line for a weapon would not be worth it to them.
I wish they would stop calling it a beta client. For one it is not a new client but a wrapper, as everyone knows. For the other a beta does not last for a kittening 3 years.
You do know the order is fixed and everything is jumbled together in one line, right? No picking and choosing, if the trait you want is after a skin you are basically puppied.
requesting a report option for inappropriate guild names.
And guild tags! And also pet names while we’re at it.
Unfortunately those are not exactly defined. For example, I usually sport a LGBT tag … which would be a HUGE no-no in some countries (I read one international person complaining that the transgendered NPC was offending his country’s & religion’s mores so she had to go to avoid him seeing her). There is also the problem that a perfectly innocent word in one language may be not so in another.

I hope you will use some judgement on use of exploits!
To take your example of a vendor having things at a much lower cost. What if that vendor is behind several masteries? How is a player supposed to know if it is a bug or a reward for the accomplishment, ie, intended or not intended? Outside of the BWEs we have not seen this content (and even what we saw has changed) so it is hard to know what to expect.

As to communication, I doubt they are doing any major development right now. If they were smart the drop-dead date was earlier and now they are just waiting for the rollout. They will know there will be undiscovered problems so some people will be out to cover the weekens and many of the rest will be on standby so using flex time right now.
Note I did not say everyone. The only question is if the right people (like Colin) are available.

Have fun getting the masteries maxed out to reach map completion to get those HP’s lol. I do believe its 300 level ups after 80 per mastery? Or was it closer to 600?
Someone was saying 16 million-ish xp. That’s the equivalent of leveling up 800 times from level 80.
250k ish Xp per level, so more like 64 times.
Can the xp come from any characters? If so, mastery points would be the gate when most level a revenant.
I do not refer to any chars as a main since I rotate between them all the time. Out of my 8 chars 5 are at 105, 1 is 107, and 2 are at 120.

Seriously the lack of red post, not that I should be surprised, it’s like that child that was caught doing something they shouldn’t so they just hide because that makes everything better. I guess they really didn’t learn from their FAQ scandal.
Given that the vast majority of the complaints in this thread are by a small handful of people and that most of it was posted during Anet’s downtime, this really shouldn’t be a surprise.
People are trying to be very loud about their complaints, but so far the actual number of people complaining really isn’t that high. That and we’re within 2 days of launch. The devs may not have time for posting on the forums that much or the permission to interrupt the devs that know the answers to the questions we have about this.
They have people who are working for them for the literal purpose of relaying messages to and from the community and dev teams. This is not a valid excuse.
Yes, but the dev teams may be too busy to answer questions given how close we are to launch. So the messengers have told to only interrupt if it’s important and they may not view giving explanation for the choice as important enough to warrant an interruption.
Even if they can not talk directly to a dev they would be given an alternate POC who would make the call on whether to bother a dev.
Remember that Colin came into this thread just yesterday and posted. If they can post on a forum (not even starting an official announcement thread) that close to release then I highly doubt there is a brick wall between them and the world right now.

Really? Not high? You DO realize we are on page 28 already, right? This is also not the only thread or forum discussing this.
Consider this…
ANET has listed several “features” that won’t be ready at launch.
They sprang this busy work on us at the last moment.I’ll leave it to others to draw conclusions.
I, too, bought the expansion for the Elite specs. I, too, am feeling misled. Kinda like in the early days, when ANET made a manifesto they then abandoned without a word.
Never again will I trust ANet. I likely will never buy any product in advance from them again. I’m looking for another game — not a rage quit, a disappointment quit.
I am guessing how I came here was not unusual: I am part of a community around another game/virtual world. I am not the only one in our group who is dejected at this. When people leave somewhere they go where their friends are going so once one of us leaves GW2 …

And this reminds me why I did not preorder the game. I think I’ll wait a while and see how this gets resolved.
As a casual player, this pretty much kills the game for me.
What really concerns me though with HoT is there is now, ANOTHER controversy about the xPack. Why did they just not release all this information long time ago and not within 72hrs of launch?
I just figure I will just play Halloween content but I have no idea what I will do when it is over. I have not been enthused about even logging in since we got the news. I thought HOT was going to be great but the closer it gets the more I am actually dreading it instead.
Another controversy? Do I even want to know what they said now?
I use the # of slots that we get (5?) and use 20-slot bags, with the exception of 1 18-slot invisible bag at the second to the bottom.
The bottom bag is vendor trash. Junk, minor sigils. All the goodies are in the invisible bag. About half of the bag above it is stuff the vendor will not offer to buy.
Above that is a vast wasteland. GW2 puts loot at the top so I leave as big an area for that and unpacking as possible.

I wouldn’t mind “progressively” unlocking the elite spec on one of my characters, but doing the same grind over and over on all my alts? How did they overlook this, lol.
your the ones that made the alts, they should take up a lot of time and effort imo
Yeah but the game openly embraced and encouraged Altoholics, they have always been welcomed by the designers with specific game mechanics to encourage this play style of mass re-rolling and character slot buying. Now they are being retroactively punished for spreading their time, now the most important resource in the game, and in many cases RL gold too thinly over to many toons.
The requirements to keep this play style relevant and enjoyable just went way up.
I find it hard to focus on more than 2-3 toons in any game but I get why the Alties are grumpy.
True, I always find it bizarre when people ask me ‘which character is your main’. I go between them so often my first 4 characters had about the same time on each of them as the other 3 for a long time.
I consider alts mules and characters I am testing something out with. Characters I do not have much emotional investment in.
Currently I have 8 mains. In a few days I will have 9. Which one I am using on a given day is part what I am doing, part where I am, part who is newest, part what profession/race I like, and part whim.
