Solution to Hero Points

I like the core of the idea. This would be the ideal time, since they know how many pts we shouls have after a full unlock of the current traits/skills and what challenges we need to overcome. The only question I have is overlap. What if (like most) a consumable or communing place is guarded? You might have to defeat the guard, use stealth, or happem to get there right after someone else fought them.

Like I said, the idea itself is a good one. They should be scaled somehow. Some HPs are mind-numbingly dull on multiple HPs while others are ‘what the kitty-cat is THIS doing in a starter area?’. (looks at a certain challenge in the NE Plains of Ashford) Most are not terrible per se (still a pain with multiple chars though) but you need someone to watch your back or you are toast because their low-level stuff likes running around behind you.

Am I the only one that cringes that anet called the new specs ‘elites’?

It seems some people want to think of them as 1337 or something (sorry for non-english speakers not getting the reference, just substitute ‘superior’ or ‘stuck up’). Umm, no, they are basically sub-categorizations as you are defining them as a mod to a key mechanic. They are just like defining any other type of build by what trait lines you are using.

If players wanna “lvl” their characters via 5k tomes, fine by me, but don’t demand everything. Elite specs should not be easy to unlock.

I for one would not wanna see every “n00b” unlocking the elite spec of his class in 5 seconds…

First you don’t wanna “grind” for exotic armor, then you don’t wanna “grind” for Hero Points, then…

I’m sorry you can’t have it all from the moment you logged in. This is not an FPS game. It’s extremely casual friendly as it is already, don’t ridicule it…

This attitude is very anti-WvW. Many of us leveled our characters in WvW and have characters that are pretty much exclusive to WvW. There should be a way to obtain hero points in WvW. Not to mention it’s going to be hell for those with tons of alts.

I find it weird that Anet said in the last Guild Chat that they understand doing certain things like world exploration over and over again on alts is a huge chore. That is the reason they eliminated it from the requirements for the new legendaries. But here they are making things miserable with this 170 point hero point requirement to unlock elite specs. If I have to do that on my main, fine I’ll do it. But having to do it for every single alt character is very miserable.

170?? what the …. Are you ……. serious? My main is ok, but there is no way I’m running through pve maps again with the rest of my 4 alts to achieve 680 hero points.

haha, and that doesn’t even include the optional armor things for each spec. That brings it up to something like 250 hp according to the data mine. But at least that stuff isn’t necessary. But yeah, the 170 is to get the elite spec alone which is pretty outrageous. If it was account bound I don’t think I’d mind, but it isn’t. So you have to run around on each character. AND that’s not the only thing, rumor has it you might have to do some kind of collection thing in pve first before even being able to put hero points toward your elite. Though I think that’s heavy speculation because someone noticed some sort of elite spec collection during beta. And because they said this in their final countdown post:

“overcoming challenges in the jungle to unlock your elite specialization”

So that makes it sound like not only do we have to deal with hero points, but some other thing as well. -_-

That would be interesting. If all of your characters could contribute HPs. I have about 850 HPs between all my characters but none are at the 170 (and the 250 is impossible).

What constantly annoys me are the ‘170 HPs are not big deal’ people. Sure, if you foolishly unlocked all of the skills and traits when given the exact # of HPs to do so and before the 170 was datamined. Or maybe if you have every single HP in the game. HPs basically come in two varieties: ‘this is boring but I will need to grind it on all my characters anyway’ or ‘we who are about to die several times (and still be bored) salute you’.

I have 170 hero points just from playing the game. What are you doing so completely wrong that you’re having a hard time getting hero points?

No, really. This I gotta hear.

Actually, oh, moving on to another map to have fun with rather than spending all my time grinding out everything in a map just so I can say I did everything in it? Yes, I said grind, which is what it is. Take an easy one, like the morgan’s spiral flower in caledon forest: if you consider that ‘challenging’, even for low level chars, you are probably in the wrong game.

I have 8 characters currently and have plans for many more. Doing the same exact things with each of them is about as much fun as farming. I prefer to give each one area of the map to ‘specialize’ in. Sure, I make sure to give each of them as many WPs in other zones as possible, but absolutely none of my characters ‘specializes’ in the whole world.

Why not level through scrolls and tomes?

All of the new content is at 80. For the revenant most likely even more so.

I am planning to hold off until Monday as that is when my next scroll drops. I will be having WAY too much fun with Halloween content and (hopefully) elites before then anyway. I do not want to spend that time doing the same old-same old level 80 grind.

Maybe for a later revenant when there is nothing else to do. Not the one I will be rolling the first week though.

Will the current 8 profs be history?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Menadena.7482

Ever since the announcement they have been hyping elites. Even if they barely got a mention people would want to at least try them out, especially on their fave characters.

Which leads me to think the existing 8 professions will mainly be FTPers.

Confusing it still it seems the elites might be behind some sort of a wall. What that wall is exactly nobody is saying unfortunately, which does not help the rumor mill.

No matter what any wall is we would have to unlock it with professions they have spent over half of a year saying are worse than the new stuff. “Look at what you get with elite xyz!”

Does anyone expect us to really be happy at the situation? Am I the only one who will see the classical professions as being somehow ‘lesser’ as of Friday?

I get the same frustrations in a party. If I want to send out a potion or whatever to my party I can not do it. After the second one something decides I am spamming. Even going slow I run into it so the limit must be set to something insane.

I also run into it in chat. I was coordinating an event so was obviously using /map. The system has decided sometimes that I am spamming because I was issuing instructions too fast. Anyone who has ever had that happen to them know how incredibly frustrating it is for both sides as suddenly the commander shuts up in mid-whatever and does not say anything for a bit.

The annoying thing is these things are there to stop goldselling bots and such. Which would know the limits and skirt around them.

I always get a bit worried when I see folks who are planning to take the day off work on a launch day. If you are not undone by server lag/overload you are highly likely to be undone by bugs and glitches. As stated above, they can do all the beta testing in the world but nothing can prepare the system for first contact with hundreds of thousands of eager and excited players. Some will be seeking exploits, some will do the quests in the “wrong” order or log out are the “wrong” time and some will insist on climbing all over the new scenery and getting stuck in the tiniest of cracks.

We’re all lovely but we’re just so darned unpredictable….

Oh, I plan on taking the day off next Friday. Not just because of all the newness but because I am ahead of schedule right now so need to burn some vacay anyways.

While I will be in-world a lot that day it will be so I can do Halloween stuff. Sure, HOT will be worth a glance, but I will let all the unwilling testers fly into the dragon’s teeth.

Any recommendation on GPU?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Menadena.7482

The GPU itself is not taxed as much in GW2 as other system resources as compared to other games. You should be fine going with a consumer-level gpu. It is the cpu and ram you want to look at if you are going to expand anything as that will give you the most bang for your buck.

I have had GW2 go to black at times and it appears to be a bug somewhere. If your GPU is making noise you may want to have the GPU fan looked at. It could be as simple a fix as just using a can of air on it.

How Do I Instal a SSD?

You may want to check what type of bus you have and such. Unless it is a significant speed drop the easy way would be have the SSD be an external first, configure it to have your OS, then move it to an internal drive later if you want to tidy up things. If you can keep 2 copies of your OS there, I boot off an SSD on my mac but have a nightly clone to my HDD so I can use it as a boot as well.

Yes, to me it does not make a lot of sense, purely from a programming and marketing perspective.

From a programmer one, clearly a lot of work and time has gone into them. It just does not make sense to put in that much effort if only a few people will enjoy it. Look at how long it takes for even the most minor asked-for feature to be implemented.

From a marketing one you do not want the cost to be high either. For those of us that pre-ordered we do not have much choice. However it is pretty much a guarantee that after launch (and the costs are known) some people will not upgrade because they do not see getting elites any time soon as being a possibility.

I’m actually really looking forward to having a proper ranged power weapon on my guard.

Why? Ranged on a Guardian should only ever be used when pure melee is just not an option. I mean, I was excited about it too, but when I played DH in the betas, it felt like an incredible downgrade. No insta-cast on virtues? No thanks, I kinda need those to survive.

Actually, I am looking forward to a bow on my Guardian as well. If that were the only feature in HOT I would consider it money well spent.

Yes, if you are next to the monster melee will be better. Try meleeing with the megadestroyer and let us know how that goes, kay? There is a pretty good reason why most of the characters at that event have pets and clones.

I prefer to look at new options with the elites rather than thinking of them losing something. What is it really? A new trait line and a handful of skills.

My ideal situation is Elite Spec Masteries, so that you can unlock them once and done. But I suspect it’s a per character thing you have to do in order to unlock them individually.

This has basically always been the case. There was never a situation where you could create a character, tome them to 80 before leaving the starter zone and just be the elite spec.

Of course there is a way to get to 80. For at least the sylvari you can access your bank in the starter zone without even going to the main city (or having the game email you a golem). Since I store my tomes in the bank …

The impression we always got from everything that was said were that we would have access to elites. Of course, people will say ‘they did not say we would not have to do xyz to get them’ to which I counter they never said the reverse. The impression was HOT would give us access to them (I forget the exact wording) and for the BWEs we had elites and revenants to play with.

You 100% missed my point. Obviously you can tome to 80, though I’m not certain why you think Sylvari have this power in a unique way. Anyone who has the delux golem banker can do it.

What I was saying is that there was no situation in which doing that would include the ability to just BE the elite spec right then and there. That was never on the table, regardless of what people deluded themselves into believing.

I think we both have misunderstandings here. I was saying without the golem or going into your racial city at least the sylvari (probably asura too, I need to check the map) have crafting stations in the same zone that you start in.

The implication has ALWAYS been we would have access to the elites on day 1. The BWEs and POIs have spent lots of time showing off the elites so there was no reason to think there would be a delay between HOT launch and elites showing up. Read the posts here from before the final countdown blog and you will see that idea being pretty widespread and nobody said ‘umm, maybe we are wrong’. Whether the unlock would be automatic or with an undetermined number of HPs was the only real question.

The search function often gets messed up in a variety of programs. I am not sure why, but hey.

If I could pick one feature it would be to only show items with locked skins. Once I hit 80 on a character I have them fully outfitted with their normal exotics so if I am buying something in the TP I am either searching for a specific item or for skins I do not have.

I mean if i need that much hero points and have to unlock the elite in the jungle it would be way too much .

Yes, even for the 170 HP that is way too much. Especially since they want to have several elites. I do not play wvw or have the krait thing so that means I can only miss 9 pts minus however many I get in the maguma wastes. So now I get the slow slog of getting points in high-level zones. MAYBE if I knew months ago, but now between work, 8 characters, and actually playing the game it is a numerical impossibility.

If elites require something different than HPs that work was all for nothing. Not to mention that what are essentially 9 new professions are not available on release day for anyone to play with in at least pve (which is where the new regions are). If they thought there was LFG drama before wait until we have some people be elites and others not …

No one knows. About all we know is that you need to unlock the minor trait first to be able to equip the weapon and the unlock is in the new area.

Which is HUGE for me. If the only thing at all in HOT was to let guardians have a good ranged weapon it would be worth it. That far surpasses anything else we know what we are getting.

Yes, I want to know the details too. Until recently they had not even said much about how to unlock elites. Now that we know we need to unlock the traits and skills individually of course there is some question about it.

Oh, I know plenty about disabled gamers. I play with quite a few. My spouse is Deaf but I have yet to convince them to give GW2 a try.

Give mapping ‘show enemy names’ to caps lock a try. It is not perfect but is close to what you want with the current setup. On-and-off to turn it on or if you want it off just leave it engaged. True, it will turn off at the slightest provocation (as I expect any solution we got would) so I am just used to hitting caps lock a couple times now and then.

The key for running is the caps lock key but I use that less often anyway so just use the up-arrow key. I am not sure why that is? It is not like caps lock goes any faster and I find constantly moving forward instead of stopping when I want to be a major annoyance anyway.

The only downside is if you REALLY do not want to se nameplates while chatting. How often does that happen? I have yet to encounter a situation where seeing nameplates was a bad thing.

wat?

We cant just unlock it via hero points and such when we start? im really confused about this

I was confused as well. I bought HOT for the elites, not to go play in their new zones just to get to them (I want to hit the zones on my schedule, not somebody elses).

People have been doing hero challenges, and almost nothing else, for weeks now in case the number was higher than what we had on all our characters (this was especially frustrating to us altoholics). We were pretty much told we could play HOT content if we were 80s and there was not a qualifier to that. Everything says the main HOT content is elites —- points of interest, blog posts, BWEs. This means nobody will be playing elites right from day 1?

You can play the HoT content if you are 80 and there is no qualifier for that. Part of the HoT content is working to unlock the elite spec. ANet never once said you would have access to all elites the moment you login on day 1. They never even hinted that would be the case. The only thing they said was that you will need hero points to unlock new utilities and traits. You are going to actually have the play the game, get used to it or find another game that suits you better.

I DO play the game. Why do you think I am on this forum?

Take into mind that you’ll be unlocking traits and skills to get the whole experience. Personally I think it should be over 100 just for the traits.

I really feel it’s a waste if I don’t use 100% of my hero points for this.

So what you’re saying is I should have to do map completion on every single one of my characters if I want to play the new specialization I just paid $60 for?

I don’t PvE that often, I WvW. Now that gaining lvl’s once you’re 80 doesn’t give Hero Points, over 100 Hero Points is asinine.

Absolutely not, unless you used all of your hero points to unlock every trait and skill, even though you’re definitely not going to use them. I’m probably going to have to do that for two of my characters, but some should be fine, cause I only spent the points I specifically needed for my build.

Which I would hazard a guess that most people did. The fact that we got exactly the number of pts to unlock everything (no more, no less) is a pretty big clue. There is also a rumor that you will need 100% unlock of everything else anyway, which would make the argument moot.

The reverse happened to me and I was quite puzzled by it. I was setting up a defense party for Teq and people that joined it kept getting kicked. When I asked why I was told that it was ‘reserved’ to taxi people in. Letting them have their taxi I left to form an actual defense party. Then at the last minute, after saying nothing for almost an hour, they announced they were the ‘real’ defense party for that location and nobody should listen to me (I was organizing other parties and the whole event so it probably confused the whole map).

As to why it happens? I am not sure. Even when the purpose of the party is clear in both of our cases people want to make the party something else. So no, it is not a LFG problem as I was using /map … maybe it is a communications problem somehow?

I wonder if I was there. I joined someone who was starting n hills. Got kicked seconds later and when I asked why, they said they were defense but currently doing taxis. One minute to teq spawn and people start screaming there’s no n hills lol.

I have had people join my lfg and kick me or leave party so it’s removed. This only happens in SW or teq, I just assume they’re trolling or trying to remove other maps’ lfgs so theirs fills first.

Yes, that sounds like you were there. The person in it with a purplish cmdr tag was me (but I forget what char I was using that day, maybe Sya). We wound up running to do S hills but the entire time we were keeping an eye peeled for what would happen in n hill.

Having never used LFG I wonder how often what you experienced happens?

When are the wings returning?

I do have to wonder about the demand. I have the white ones but only use them on my norn (it fits well with her overall themes). Even on her they are awkward most of the time.

As to timing, it is anyone’s guess really when an item that left the gem store will come back. If it were known there would not be the “have to buy it NOW” rush if you knew you were not going to need it for another, oh, 6 months. Given it just returned recently for the anniversary sales though I would be shocked if we saw a return before the summer. With the stock of things not available right now anet is not in a crunch to bring things back every few months. Customer want and time it has not been in the store are not always good indicators, look at the requests for bunny ears.

Now that I have passed 90 HPs on all my characters I have pretty much done the ones I know about (or the few I decided were so insane for 1 pt that I would skip them after I died enough times). True, all of my characters were doing the same ones but at least they were doing them in wildly different orders so I had to relearn the challenge each time.

Now? Go to the wiki and find where the missing HPs are in a zone. Then go there with character after character doing the same exact set of tasks I just did with another character 15 minutes ago. By the time HOT comes out I will be ‘will someone please just shoot me now’ as that is what it will be from now until I know the cost.

I am REALLY REALLY REALLY hoping that just unlocking all the skills and traits is not something greater than 100. Not even requiring any HP is probably what most are expecting. This is not my idea of fun. Even if your idea of fun is challenging how fun and challenging is it to do the same exact kitteny thing 8 times in a row? My concept of fun is ‘play in a zone, when you get bored move on to the next’.

Please anet, just tell us? Also you can pretty much guess what will happen if the # is too high.

By doing it this way you minimize people in HOT right away. That means they have time to roll out patches.

I am sure there will be some sort of tie-in event that will ‘explain’ it.

It could change, yes.

Personally… I doubt it will.

And I personally doubt that Anet will be willing to face the coming kitten storm in asking players to grind 170 hero points to unlock an elite specialization, and then do it for each of their alts . We’ve already seen them back down over much less.

True, I am shooting to have all 8 of my characters at 100 and that is WITH reading about the debate here and making a concerted effort to do hero challenges. Both the easy ones and the ones that make me want to put a fist through my monitor.

I can virtually guarantee that the average (note average, we are not talking vets, elites, etc) player of GW2 will not have 100 at the drop. Since many of them bought HOT (so had access to the BWEs) they already have a taste of the elites and would spit fur if they could not roll an elite with all the traits they have been watching on points of interest.

Assuming the datamine is just a placeholder all we can do is speculate. I see several major places it could be at:

only needing a level 80: this would fit with precedent and their statements that you only need an 80 to use HOT things (ie, elites)

65 pts (or was it different) to make up for what they gave us after getting blowback when they changed skills/traits before

85-90 pts …. this represents the cost of a trait line (60) and the average of a skill line (25)

100 pts …. a nice round number

I see VERY low odds of more than 100 and the odds will drop precipitously.

Sure, they will probably ask for more for the skins. Let those be the ‘bragging rights’ things people want to show off with. As long as they do not make the cost of entry higher for just playing the character.

As to the skins, they would have to be REALLY good for me to want to burn HPs on them anyway. About the only exception is the blindfold for the revenant and that is not an elite.

Elite spec unlock stuff

The only question is how many HPs (see other thread for that) although I doubt it will be too high. You will lock a lot of people out of a full unlock, especially ones that play a little PVE but not all the time. With HOT the thing to look at is masteries: whether those will have a full unlock of non-hot stuff in PVP has not been addressed that I know of.

I would love it if they gave us the points. I did a bit more map completion on 8 characters and I am sure they will have a use someday.

My money is on 85-90 for a full skill/trait unlock. You can spend more on the skins if you want to feel special but everyone gets to play with the mechanics for a reasonable number of hero challenges.

Right now I am between 90 and 95 on all my characters. I want to get all of them to 100 (or a little more) by launch to give me a cushion but can not see it being more than 100, especially if they plan on having more elites in the future.

lack of content for solo (pve) players

You paid 60 bucks for a game you played 3 years, and if you don’t wanna do the content they provide its your choice. IMO levelling solo and doing the personal story for all classes and races already warrants the 60 bucks. It’s an mmorpg gw2 is meant to be played with other players.

The problem with that is people just look at the price of the box. Once you count the gem store it would be less expensive for me to use a subscription game.

Most of the time I am wandering around solo. Sure, I am not completely solo: other people are at events and hero challenges, I sometimes mentor in new people areas, plus I always have my guild and a few friends to talk to. Just for most of the brand x open world stuff I do not see a great need to have someone else there beyond whoever else shows up.

Anet i need to know HoT "disk space"

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Menadena.7482

Menadena.7482

General rule of thumb: if you need to ask how much disk space something will be you need a bigger drive. Yes, easier said than done but lots of things will have decreasing performance if they run out of space to put caches and system files.

For example, my SSD is much larger than I will ever need. Why? Well, why not? SSDs tend to like being able to move things around. The ideal for this before diminishing returns is 7% but if you can do more may as well and eke that extra performance out.

Similarly my HDD is also large. It is not a system drive (well, unless you count the partition that mirrors the SSD boot drive). Why not get a 512 GB external or something and skip the mirroring? Simple. HDDs are much less expensive than SSDs so anything you can put on a HDD saves you on some pretty valuable real estate.

This is a roundabout way of saying you may need more space if you are concerned at how big it is. A drive is cheep compared to some other upgrades. Or are you worried about download time?

As to the original question we do not have any hard data but I would not expect it to be something like a magnitude more than the current package. Say no more than twice, but most likely quite a bit less.

Fast track to level 80 for new toons?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Menadena.7482

I am running around with 8 level 80s right now gathering HPs – some at at 85, some at 90. I have a pile of tomes saved up. A couple days after HOT my next 20 scroll drops. Insta-20 then 60 of my tomes.

The problem with an insta-80 is hero points. Assuming you need some for the elite and if we need a full unlock of everything else first ….

True, I assume I wont be able to elite spec day one, but I’ll still insta 80.
Reason being, all exp before lvl 80 is wasted on getting to 80, whereas if I’m 80 all that exp goes to mastery tracks.
So I’ll insta 80, then go HP hunting/map completing/etc.

Same here. After all of the HP grinding I know which ones are easy, which are challenging, and which are insane. Plus once we have HOT I will know what target number of HPs I need.

Hopefully we will not have to unlock the armor first and the unlock will take 80-100 HPs. I can then unlock things and worry about the armor skins later. Probably getting them with characters who I will not play the elites on anyway.

Unless they are truly great I do not care that much about the ‘exclusive’ skins. Let others have them if they need that to feel superior. I just am drooling over the traits, skills, and a new weapon.

Ele and Engi weapon swap OOC

What I want to see is for all professions to store entire builds and be able to swap them OOC. Weapons, traits, skills, armor, outfits, even minis. As it is now you have to go through each one and hope you remembered all the changes to make.
