First character does a chapter …. gets a hero point.

Second character does the chapter …. does not get a mastery point.

Is this because there are other ways (I assume) to get mastery points in the HOT zones? Which might be what is messing up central tyria with mastery points.

As has been said, those of us with plenty of characters (which has always been encouraged) are the ones hurt the most. If it was one character it would at least be doable but I am guessing my guild would eventually lose patience when asking to go on a HP train for every one of my characters.

As I said, it is also frustrating because some characters I had NEVER intended to take to the new maps. I only have 2 of my characters that actually like the SW, most do not last 5 minutes there.

Get friends, do the hero points.

Maybe, who knows you’ll actually find someone or a group of people you enjoy playing with. Which is the entire point of those challenges. They aren’t designed as solo content. The jungle was designed as group content from the group up.

Oh, put a sock in the passive-aggressive “be more social” mantra. I’ve been playing this game for over a year now (albeit with a few breaks), I’ve done almost entirely open world content, and in all of that “group” content, I probably have an actual conversation 1 out of every 1,000 events, if that.

Most of it is “thanks” for rezzes, if that, or “thanks for the help” (and variations of) if people help each other out on a HP. Unless you go out of your way to go in teamspeak or something, the game isn’t even friendly for getting to know people in open world because the nature of event chains means that much of your time spent is killing, surviving, and running to the next event. Time for typing out words for long conversations is rare. Voice chat is far easier to talk in while playing, but the game itself does not encourage this in any way.

So don’t give people crap about making friends, as if they are asocial losers. The so-called “group” content (90% of the events and virtually every HP) doesn’t even require social interaction. It just requires the presence of other players.

Don’t conflate social and group because, believe it or not, they are not the same thing in this context. Raids will be a different story, I’m sure, and raids are true social group content. Open world content in this game provides a feeling of solidarity. That’s most of what it does.

Same here, I do not really care as much about people thanking/saying yw for rezzes if there is a firefight going on around them. Both people are already busy ducking fire and making sure they do not wind up dead right after being revived. The few conversations have been either with people who knew me, guildies, people in a boss party, or people asking about the guild. I am not sure where these extremely social areas are that people always talk about.

So if the idea is being social to do HP it is a big fail.

It took me 8 days to finish my Berserker spec, and I noticed a SUBSTANTIAL decline in the amount of people actively working on HP’s throughout that time. It got to the point where it was actually faster to run EotM and grind WvW levels for HP than to actually go to the new zones and get groups for them.

I will NEVER level any of my alts in this game because of this system.

I with you, man. The Elite Specialization, the biggest draw for me pre-release, is now the most frustrating and bungled aspect of the expansion pack.

And it will get worse when the shiny new xpac hype fades away (as it does in all major MMOs), the early Magus Falls maps become ghost towns, and the hero points therein are utter abandoned.

Same here, it was the whole reason why I preordered ultimate. If they released the mechanics without the new regions I would have been happy. Most of my characters I was not even planning on taking into the new maps, but now I have to in order to get the specs for them I was sold in the first place. Right now I am busy with Halloween stuff and after that leveling up pact commander. I can not be on 24/7 either because of this thing called a life. It sounds like I will not have any chance at all to get the HPs I need, much less on all my characters.

Can we make mentor harder to get?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Menadena.7482

Menadena.7482

Being a mentor should require knowing the content.

To show a mentor tag in a map, the account should have done anything that can be done in that map:

  • 100% map completion.
  • Revealed all areas.
  • Completed all puzzles and mini-dungeons.
  • Completed story and all paths of any dungeon entered from that area.
  • Done all diving goggles.
  • Defeated all world bosses and meta-events with a related acheivement in that area.

In a word? No.

I have been all over every map in central Tyria but never bother with 100% completion (because it involves all the vistas, some of which are mini jumping puzzles). I doubt many low-levels will be asking me about jumping puzzles and anything else that is hard to get to. Worse case you teach them how to use the wiki for when you are not around to answer questions.

I have had people thank me for being a mentor and giving them useful advice. I guess that was bad advice then because I did not adhere to your silly restrictions?

Race Achievements - Tyria Mastery Points

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Menadena.7482

The incomplete story ones never show mastery in the achievement panel until you complete them. The wiki says they reward mastery so many people have been doing them to try and grab a few mastery points. Unfortunately, it seems like they are not currently awarding points. Hopefully it will be fixed soon or anet will come out and say you are not supposed to get mastery on more then one personal story.

Hopefully not the latter! Since I followed the ‘play your way’ philosophy the personal story was a biggie for me! While, for example, it is great if you do fractals they did not show the same amount of love to other modes of playing.

When I contacted them they said they could not guarantee when it would be done …. hopefully soon as it puts me a few points short of what I need for my last level of pact commander. I had not done the PS on my norn but did not get a point after the chapter, so am now leery of working for anything else that could give me a mastery point until this is fixed.

Please contact them sooner rather than later. If it is just me filing a formal report this will probably take a long time to fix.

Every door but the Lich’s is soloable, so I’d wager folks opening doors in other locations are just doing their thing, farming ToT bags, rather than any kind of malicious messing with others in there.

As to opening two next to one another, that’s not so bad, unless you’re fighting the Viscount, and it’s still manageable with a group. I’d chalk that up to naivety first, then f’in with the zerg second :P

I am talking people with the zerg opening the doors. Often as the first few people from a zerg are getting there someone at the front opens it as soon as they can run to it.

Actually, with 2 doors you would be fighting the viscount. The only place on the map where 2 doors are right next to each other are the viscount and a vet. The next nearest two is the one near lich, but it is just you can get that one without drawing his attention.

This is basically the same thing that happened when people bought up the commander tag. A ton of tags all over the place, rendering the tag useless. Then over time, people stopped using them and it all settled down to the point that the only people using them, were the ones who knew how to use them.

This is the same thing. Give it time guys. It’s a new shiny toy to play with, just like with the commander tag. Just have to have patience and wait for the shine to fade. This same thing happened before, and just like before, it will calm down and then people will stop using them except for the ones who actually know how to use it.

Interestingly, if everyone overuses mentor tags just because they can then the people actually doing any mentoring will go back to what they originally did. That is, using commander tags to mentor so they stand out. Which would sort of defeat the purpose of having mentor tags in the game.

I am hoping the use of them does die down. There is a lot of precedent for it but it is not a given.

EU is less casual than NA.

I do not think so. Even though I am in here a LOT but would consider myself a casual player. I want things organized though. So I am one of the ones fighting off champs that are getting a bit too close to the turrets while the majority of the people zerging are completely oblivious to how close they are to the event failing.

I think it really comes down to some fundamental difference in psychology. Not that of just the gaming community, but something more fundamental. Interestingly, I am one of those people who constantly feels like I should apologize when saying I am from the US and can never figure out the ‘logic’ here so maybe my attitudes are more european anyway.

Zerg doesn’t own the map. If people want to solo doors they’re allowed to.

It’s not like there’s a shortage of doors in the lab.

How does opening 2 doors at once help anyone at all? A lot of people that would be helping are suddenly dealing with the other thing instead.

As to a shortage … maybe not if there are a dozen players in the labyrinth. If there are a lot of people in the instance (so a door can go fast) the zerg spends a lot of time just farming random mobs waiting for a door that is not the lich.

Mentor-Tag abused as Comm-Tag

Menadena.7482

I’m finding the mentor tags annoying in most cases. I can both agree and disagree here, though. I think there’s some people with them who genuinely want to help (the person described above who led a thoughtful and detailed walkthrough on hero points in Maguuma for example) but it seems like most maps I’m in now are just covered with these tags, and I just find it’s incredibly cluttered and distracting. A majority of the time they’re not speaking either (perhaps just to their guild or group?). I think a select few are trying to use the tags to be helpful, but most are just putting it up to flaunt it or something?

I’m not sure what a good solution is here, but I would like to see these tags rethought a bit.

Hmm. This gives me a thought (I’m brainstorming). If they implemented a toggle for mentors to allow their tag to only show to party members, then in cases of small guild/friend groups, they could use that toggle as a courtesy so that their friends can see it but not the whole map. That way if a map has a lot of splinter groups of friends running around, it’s not going to be cluttered with a mentor tag on all of them.

A toggle for mentor tags would be a good idea but I would suggest two more things. Not having it display mentor in chat if they are toggled off and not letting you toggle off mentor tags if you are tagged up as a mentor yourself.

Menadena.7482

Did you do the maw daily last night? I do not know about your map but there were a LOT of people using the mentor tag at the one I was at. Considering just the numbers, most people using it are not mentoring they are ‘ooh, I haz a tag, I am spechul’. As to organizing, if you have too many tags that sort of defeats the purpose of knowing who is organizing.

No, I do not tell people to tag down. That is just plain rude to tell someone else how to enjoy the game unless their enjoyment causes others to enjoy it less. Given how many tags I see I doubt everyone is doing it to help others but I usually do not know why a specific person has it on.

A sign of a good commander (and also mentor) is not using the tag if it is not needed. If I am leading a zerg and someone else wants to tag up and lead it for awhile I practically want to thank them. Commanders are learning this, some faster than others. Mentors have not though and see it as being a special snowflake, which is odd because practically every 80 that bought HOT has one. Hence the disdain of people with mentor tags turned on by commanders.

Mentor Fake Tag

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Menadena.7482

Menadena.7482

The biggest problem seems to be with people that bought their 300 g commander tag suddenly getting in a snit because someone else can have a picture over their heads and on the map, too.

Also, it’s stupid to assume because there are both tags on a map that the two are somehow competing.

I bought my commander tag for 300 a few months before the mentor tags were announced, originally ONLY for mentoring but now I use it for organizing in PVE as well. Those of us who mentor had been asking for a mentor tag for AGES. If anyone should be in a snit it would be me. Am I? No. I would be demanding a refund if they made them WVW-only though as that is not what I bought.

I get upset when I see all of these mentor tags on a map (yes, there are a lot out there, do a low level boss sometime) and I will take a wild stab in the dark that most of them are not mentoring people while everyone is zerging in a small area where you can not find a specific person anyway.

strangely, not a single newbie has complained, every single complaint has been from veteran players, usually with commander tags moaning how there are too many tags on the map now.

strangely, despite how many people complain about the entire map wearing mentor tags, nobody in my guild has ever seen more than three up at a time.

it’s almost like people are lying to make the problem bigger than it is. I wonder why?

I wonder why as well since I see many of them all the time. Yes, I have the commander tag ankitten ot crying over having paid for it. I was a mentor before we had even heard of mentor tags so, yes, I am upset that people are wearing them who are not mentoring.

I for one supported the guild wars 2 devs for the purpose of adding it which was – to help players new and old in the game, however in beta we all mentioned that this is going to be abused a lot to which in your dev talks you all say “The good outweighs the bad”

Well not in this case, because this tag is gated poorly literally every person who purchased Hot has it and today our teq event was flooded with 15 – 20 tags and there were ppl running everywhere and we barely succeeded with this event, champ farms are even worse with groups getting split all over the map ruining event progression.
I have no idea how many legit newbies get trolled by these apples each day but i will leave it for them to speak up

This tag is not being used to “mentor” ppl at all hence it is not for-filling its purpose, either push it to rank 5 or remove it

This is going to be fun once I am done with my Halloween stuff and the pact mastery line. I organize teq a LOT and tend to get annoyed if anyone who is not doing something to help the event tags up. It only increases the confusion when the actual commanders are trying to remove some of the chaos.

Fortunately I have decided to do TT only with organized guilds. I was yelled at when I tagged up for my party at one of their Teqs so I assume they will not tolerate it if people start using mentor tags at their TTs. Teq will be a nightmare though. At maw last night I lost count of how many mentor tags were around.

Yes, it is akin to second life where you can make your title be anything you wanted (well, as long as you did not write something bannable in it). The excuse given for getting rid of the official mentor program was that some people were doing it just for the title. Completely ignoring the reality that the argument was a bit odd given anyone could say they were a mentor in their title.

Some sort of way to limit vanity tagging (of either tag) would be desirable. I just am not sure how to do that.

Believe it or not, the commander tag has valid uses in PVE. Just because a few kittens abuse it why should the rest of us lose out? If that is the case, they would need to refund everyone who only uses it in PVE and that would be a mess. This also does not change that commander tags can be abused in WVW as well.

Try organizing Teq a few times and you will see what I mean.

Unfortunately they nerfed Teq. I still see defense or offense events fail though and have lost count how many times it only succeeded because a few people put in a superhuman effort.

edit: I have organized Teq at least 100 times by now. The only times the organization was not like bathing a cat was when an organized guild was there and were filling the positions. I have yet to just zerg in the initial burn stage, the closest I have came was an ERT team once.

If I need help, the last person I would ask is someone running around on a map with a mentor tag now that everyone and his brother has it.

Do what I have done before mentor tags existed. I slapped on a commander tag and map chatted various tips that low-levels might not know yet. Every once in awhile I would say if they had any questions to /whisper to me or find the (color) triangle on their map. I would wind up with people sending me questions and following me around. I even had other vets chiming in to tell the low levels if something was good advice or to give more information on something.

Odds are if I did that today the same thing would happen and all those mentors that were not behaving as such would get ignored. It would be vexing to use a commander tag instead of a mentor tag but it would be equally vexing to not be able to tell people how to find me in the sea of people who slapped on a mentor tag because they could.

Basically, if you do the things expected of a commander/mentor you will be treated like one. If you do not you are just someone who has a ego-pixel on the screen. We should not need one, but maybe a guide as to how to use both would be good.

It is funny as I paid 300 for mine (initially ONLY to do mentoring) a few months before we found out about the mentor tag. Sure, I was a little annoyed as you should not have to pay to promote the game/help others in it. I rarely use squads and the WVW features. Would I want a refund? Probably not since sometimes it is appropriate to use.

We are looking at it in terms of gold. Convert it to your local currency and ask if you had gotten that much enjoyment out of it. That is, what, a couple of subway sandwiches?
