Do Troll Guilds exist? (Teq)

I have encountered 2 event guilds at Teq. One guild (and there are probably others) has a great organization. Ok, some of their members are real kitty-cats but in general it is a pleasure to work with them.

The other. Well. Anyone who has encountered them knows how they are viewed.

Why are guilds allowed to trigger scheduled events like Teq?

If they want to do a guild rush or something have at it. Spend as much as you want. Do not trigger a boss fight and timelock it and/or mess up event planning.

Seriously anet? Do you really want to let guilds do that?

I always have to keep them low for Teq and any other big event. It becomes an even worse problem on macs due to a bug awhile back.

I just leave them low all the time so I can never forget. Yes, it is annoying. Too bad graphics settings can not be dynamic or something.

Thief or Ranger?

I’d say the main reason some people look down on rangers in dungeons is because they tend to stick to longbow, even when they’re stacking in melee range, and they knock back enemies a lot when the rest of the party is trying to burst them down.

Unfortunately, it’s put rangers in a needlessly poor light, because aside from some poor player habits, they are a perfectly decent class.

Just play your ranger well and you’ll be fine. Use melee where it’s appropriate, don’t spam knockbacks whenever they are on cooldown and rather use them more carefully, and bring some support to the table rather than just running full signets, and I think people will appreciate your contributions. I’ve run plenty of dungeons and fractals with rangers in our party without issues, and where I have had issues, I could just as easily say I’ve had them with all classes from time-to-time as well (a bad thief or ele, for example, is just as bad, if not worse than a bad ranger).

Ultimately, it depends mostly on the player, not the class. So, my advice would be to play whatever you feel is most fun and not care too much about what others think is popular or the meta. You can find plenty of groups who will have no issues with you running ranger, or thief, or anything else.

Yes, I admit it is tempting to stick to longbow but people need to learn to switch to a melee weapon when the monster is right next to you. Every class can be played poorly or great.

For example, I often fight Teq with my elemental. The thing I do there is use water when fighting Teq so I can throw healing at the zerg while tagging Teq then use fire when defending. Not that the other 2 atunements are not useful in other situations though.

Thief or Ranger?

Menadena.7482

Yes, rangers have MUCH better survivability in PVE. For example, both my ranger and my guardian have exotic greatswords. In silverwastes as a good example my guardian lasts only a minute or so. Meanwhile my ranger can stay there until she gets bored or does something stupid. It will be an interesting comparison when my guardian gets an elite and also has a longbow though (although the ranger has an ascended one).

True, the AI for pets is terrible. However the pet can tie up part of the mob and do some damage before you can finish them off.

ideas for Player made Pact Mentor events?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Menadena.7482

But with regard to player-made events, isn’t the commander tag just as viable (or perhaps more so) for helping players follow player-made events?

It is. But cost gold i dont have.

I looked at it as $30 and spent that for enough gems then converted/bought immediately so my gold balance did not change. I keep buying new skins so rarely keep a huge balance without spending it.

As to tag visibility, it is easy to spot. However you have no way of knowing if someone tagged up is interested in helping or it is just using it as a vanity thing.

I’ve dealt with some pretty severe racism many, many times. And I’ve said in the past that despite Gw2 having “one of the nicest MMO communities” I’ve also never experienced more racism any where in my life than in this game. I’m not sure what causes it but there are some extremely insensitive people out there. Not to mention that it doesn’t even bother me most of the time… I could care less if people want to use racial slang or stereotypes but some of the things I’ve heard in Gw2 really make me wonder if these people actually think that way or if they’re just being rude.

What ever the case, I’ve reported the people that have said these things, including the [NGGR] guild on multiple occasions and to my knowledge nothing has been done. Though of course it’s possible I’m just misinformed. Regardless, if they haven’t been banned, it would upset me more knowing that they’re still out there potentially hurting someone else than knowing of the things they said to me specifically.

I think people today are carried too far away with “offensive” ideas. The NGGR guild, for instance, if it’s offensive to you, sorry. But, why should they have to change their guild name because you are offended because it looks too much like a racial slur?

For the same reason states will refuse to issue license plates hat they think MIGHT contain a slur, no matter if that was the intention? For the same reason that they will recall and reissue plates if they realize one slipped through? For the same reason games do the same thing with character names, even if it MIGHT be a slur in a language not spoken by the person that made the character? Should I go on?

Sure, if something was to come of it, they’d look at both sides of the story. For instance, Mods/Devs have mentioned before that if an infraction was provoked, then they would take the provocation into consideration. Theoretically speaking, if you did do what you said you were thinking of doing, the guy could’ve taken multiple screenies or even video showing what was happening and sent a ticket to CS.

Which I could easily counter with the stuff that was in map chat (which I assume they have logs of, no need to trust my screenshots). That would make it quite clear he was not only provoking the whole map but also disparaging whole groups of people.

Weddings

I played a game once that offered a marriage option, and a daily marriage quest with the said partner. It did not give an unfair advantage to other players. It was mainly just a daily quest and a title abive your head saying “Married to…”. It also featured a wedding with some events.

I don’t think it’s something that would hurt the game, but it could cause some complex issues if not done right. If this was implanted Anet might have to allow only male and female marriage contracts because it could be taken differently in another country. They would have to consider the option at an international level, unless they plan on making different versions of this particular feature for each country.

I don’t really think my female Charr would enjoy being put in a wedding dress. >.<
There are also the different cultures in each race to consider.

That is the problem. Different cultures feel different ways about all kids of things. In general, I would say whatever the standards are where the company hangs its hat should rule. Which makes it interesting here since NCsoft is based in South Korea while anet is in the US … two completely different cultures and legal systems.

A lot of people will object if only MF marriages are allowed but other people would object if they were not the only option. You need some way of settling the debate rather than trying to please everyone.

As to female Charrs not wanting wedding dresses … yeah. Even beyond my own preferences for what to wear my Charrs would spit fur. One has a broken horn and the other has Braham’s armor combined with an eyepatch. Neither is exactly dainty.

There was one guy in /map chat in Queensdale one day going on about women, lesbians, and so forth. I debated figuring out where he was, taxiing over some people from my LGBT guild, then all of us tagging up (or at least putting on some impressive titles) and follow him around quickly killing whatever spawned near him at events so he could not tag it. Not that I did it but the people on the map that had not already muted him would have probably been doubled over in laughter when he started complaining.

I know you say you didn’t do this, but this kind of behaviour isn’t the answer. It is in fact reportable in itself. Purposefully compromising another person’s ability to play is against the rules- it’s griefing. This kind of behaviour isn’t ok, even if the other guy was spouting all sorts of atrocities.

How would it be griefing though assuming you are using impartial rules? It is just a group of friends doing events on a map.

The most probable thing is for anet to consider it a ‘he said, she said’ situation and do nothing but say they took his side. How could you make any sort of ruling that would not have unintended effects? If that is bad then I call foul on everyone who finishes an event as part of the dailies before I can get there.

Remember, this was theoretical only (actually, it was also a slight variation too as I thought of 2 choices but combined them here to make the explanation easier). It was fun in the sense of imagining an annoyance slowly turning on a spit over a fire.

Well of course! Armor skins > outfits majority of the time. But as far as I know Anet will not further add armor skins to the gemstore and from here on out only give us outfits.

The frustrating thing is because there are so few you can not help running into someone else who looks practically the same.

The best solution is to do something like the old town clothes. Rather than a single item for everything allow some amount of mix and match. Or at least allow various pieces to be turned off so the armor skin can show through.

So that got me wondering: Why isn’t there an option to turn that on?

As Google has with everything, I’m sure there’s an API for it, and the burden could ‘totally’ be put on the client side.

Eh, just a thought.

Google changed their API awhile back. It used to be free to use the API but now there is a fee.

What I miss in this game are some sort of profile other players can read. I have seen those profiles have a free form text field for spouse/partner so if you wanted to add more information (details of your relationship, more than 1 person, whatever) you could.

No buffs or anything needed. It would be a great way for anet to sell wedding stuff in the gem store though.

That is one of the signs I look for: are there a bunch of tags at one place. Tags can be a great organizational tool but if you see several at the same place well before something is going on odds are 1 is (or is not) organizing and the rest have it on for vanity purposes. Not that there is not a good reason to do it on a champ train or such so you can see if everyone is there before killing a champ but you would hardly need several at the spawn point for the jungle wurm in caledon.

There are event guilds who have a good rep. Unfortunately some of their members ruin that.

Get over it, quit whining like little girls and organize your own map. This is the same crap as the people who whine that there are zerker only LFGs instead of just making their own non-zerker LFGs.

talk about being blind as a bat . you sure do not get this post and points made in this post at all that is very clear

I get them, they’re just meaningless whining. If I spend a bunch of time organizing a map and then my own friends can’t get in because it is full I am taking my organized map with me to a new map where my friends can get in. Anybody that got left behind was a lazy afker or too self-important to join any of the parties/teamspeak and don’t deserve to come along.

Well.. I guess you didn’t organise it very well then if your own friends/guildies cant even get in… that speaks volumes and is one of the indicators for players not to come within a country mile of one of your organised events.. just like the guilds were speaking of in this thread… thanks for the heads up.

No, it means anet has poor tools for getting people into maps.

Actually, it means you do not know how to use their systems. When I got to the teq area tonight I could see they were doing well so I went off in search of a map that needed help. After going to wvw and back a few times I kept getting the same map until poof nice empty beach.

Just keep pinging in and out until a new map opens for you. Then taxi your friends in before it fills up with everyone else. If someone says they are great at organization they should be able to swing that.

The problem is they did NOT organize everyone who was there. They did whatever organization elsewhere (supposedly) and came in and expect to displace the work of an hour just on their say-so. Who elected anyone the royalty of an event anyway?

Dailies, at least in PVE, do not give you laurels. You get laurels as part of your login reward. Occasionally RNG will bless you with T6 materials from gathering but that hardly is guaranteed.

Yes, we may be talking about different things. The one I have experience with did a champ train all over the map and timed things to the second. Some of the people were a bit arrogant though. As much as I appreciate any offer to help I would not want to dismantle everything we had done by being there long before then. You want to put down banners, a fire, and food? Fine, just do not tell other people not to do so. You want to run the show? Uh-uh. We have been working out things for awhile now and will not change at the last minute for some people that come off as ‘teq deities’ however again we would gladly accept help. Fine by me if their leader(s) want to tag up (although I would prefer only one person from each defense squad/the zerg do so to make instructions clearer). Just do not try to replace people who have been organizing their own parties.

Again, I welcome help from anyone. At the same time, I will refuse to hand over the reins to a group that shows up after everyone else got started.

Also lol at considering an extra pristine relic being ‘more rewarding’. I don’t think I’ve ever spent a single one.

Yes, before it was something I could incorporate into my usual stuff. Now it feels more like ‘sigh I have to do my daily now’. Before I used to have no problem leaving some things to the next afternoon, as long as I was done by reset. Now I want them done as fast as possible after reset so I do not need to deal with them anymore. Waypointing around a certain map to hope I catch an event in time? Seriously anet? Who calls that fun by any definition?

To be honest, I don’t see why guilds even feel the need to host or organize Tequatl anymore. Aside from being one big advertising campaign for the guild itself, it seems pretty pointless. People already know what to do during Tequatl, and, outside of empty maps, I just never see it fail these days.

I myself have been on a map just recently where guilds say they are organizing the event and then they pull people away from the map, and you end up sitting on an empty map 5 minutes before the event starts. It’s a big inconvenience because getting onto a more full map with that little time left is quite difficult. They really should just leave things be and stop trying to manipulate everything for their convenience all the time, especially when they end up wasting up to 45 minutes of other players’ time, who have all been patiently waiting on the map to secure their place. If they want to have a nice organized guild event, then they should do it outside of Tequatl’s spawn time and spawn him themselves.

While people can pull together quickly that is not guaranteed. The most painful part is getting people to join a defense team or run a turret. Between AFKers and people who are committed to zerging it takes a lot of cajoling to get the rest to do those specialized positions so teq can be a pretty much a guaranteed win. When Teq is done without all of the turrets full or turrets fall because of a small defense bone walls are practically guaranteed.

I do Teq practically every day, lately getting there up to an hour early to organize things. Hello to anyone I have done it with, I am the person organizing in /map chat over on North Hills who is tagged up with a pink cheeto unless that color is taken, lately Sya Kello but I use different characters as the whim strikes. The whole reason for north hills is because I go to whatever defense needed people that day and/or the one before it.

I have done it once before with that guild awhile back while just on a defense team and I was more than happy to let them fully take the reins. Now with all the work I put into it every day my reaction would be more along the lines of ‘if your people can fill out the holes in our defenses, great, but I will not tag down and stop organizing because you are demanding I do and that you think you can do it better’.

That is why I have a commander tag too, to help in PVE. I wished there had been another solution to designate mentors but I bought a commander tag to solely do that (a bit overpriced to do just that but oh well). I find it extremely handy to organize events (also suggesting people running various teams to use commander tags too so we can ID things by what color tag).

I am not sure if 2 weeks is sufficient though. We need to see how long it takes to earn the tag (especially if you are not in the new regions much) before we can say. I would hope mentors would use the mentor tag unless they actually are commanding (running an event is part commander part mentor so not sure what you would call that). I also wonder what about those of us that bought a commander tag because of the mentor tag, so it will now be pointless. Until I can show either tag on the map I would rather not have them always off as I /map ‘if you need help look for the (color) arrow’. Make it a preference that defaults to on so new people see it.

As to colors meaning different things: I was never told what each meant. I just try not to use a color that is nearby.

Anything to tell the mode, even just a symbol on the world map of what regions are in what phase of the day. If it is greyish light how do i know it just is not noon? Even the night is just a dim light. I suppose having night like that makes sense if you are doing an event at off hours.

In other games I have seen people be able to define custom daylight cycles and override the local settings, which makes it handy when you have a 24 hour event.

Are people moving away from MMOs?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

MMOs can feel a lot like single player games. Sure, for bosses and big missions you need to team up. If you play it mostly/solely in PVE and do not do fractals most of the time it feels single player though. Even dynamic events feel that way and the other players are almost really good NPCs.

Small groups (aka, parties) tend to be more cohesive than large groups, even if they break up right after the event, which is not always the case. One suggestion is to somehow encourage small groups and for people to stay in them longer.

The reason it is not available is because people would then be able to deposit their rewards into the guild bank. As this is new content there could be potential exploits and to make sure it won’t harm the non-beta economy etc this is the safest solution.

You do not even need to do that. Roll a character, rep, dump inventory (boxes of exotics, etc) to guild bank, repeat.
