One thing that both the Meta-Only and these Non-Meta groups don’t seem to realize is that personality wise they are identical, which is why they have trouble with each other. I’ve seen Meta-Only come to the forums and say how everyone needs to be using only zerker gear and I’ve seen Non-Meta people come to the forum and do the same with non meta stats. Both groups are rigid in their thinking and both groups feel the need to bustle around and micromanage how other people have fun. The thought that someone, somewhere is having fun, but not the way they themselves have fun seems to burn the souls of both groups so they hurry to the forums to try to force the other side to play as they play.

Both sides need to learn that it’s not their job to supervise how others play. If someone wants to fast forward through a dungeon, it’s no concern of the Non-Meta. If he wants to roleplay walk through a dungeon and kill every mob in there, it’s no concern of the Meta-Only. The urge to micromanage those unrelated to them is common to both of these extreme groups and hopefully ANet never listens to them.

I have no problem at all with someone playing however is fun for them. What I have a problem is when they tell me how to play. Outside of having a long ignore list everywhere you run into it on map chat, guild chat for large (and diverse) guilds. On forums. Wherever.

I think the problem is you have hard-core gamers mixed with casual gamers. I have lost count of how many times I have heard some variation of ‘you are doing WHAT with that class’. A frustrating one is trying to organize an event and having people respond that nobody needs organization. Sorry, but I am here to have fun (not that I do not appreciate advice like what stats to prioritize), rather than to get the most DPS or whatever someone else has as their personal goal.

I like how Anet has addressed this problem. There are different game modes. While PVE attracts more casual players hard-cores will find other modes attractive. I am not sure what you can do beyond that. If there were two entirely separate games you would still have people from one trying to play the other.

Hmm, that is an idea. Maybe they are targetting it at newer players? hHich would fit since older players want things like more character slots, not things they bought or passed on the first time unless they missed them.

Oh well, the advantage is I get to save up for character slots since so far the only thing I wanted was the staff skin. Maybe a close second would be some more transmutation charges if the price is right.

Hey Anet can you nerf Ice Bow yet?

Huh?

It is not like ice bow is a permanent weapon or something. It is a skill. Since it is part of several related skills you would have to basically lobotomize eles to change all of them. Then you would have to balance them in some other way people would complain about.

Obligatory DOOOOOOOoooOOOOoooOOOOOMMMMMMMM response.

You have no idea how ridiculous this is, do you? Anyone who’s played MMOs for a while should know that these threads pop up regularly on forums for

EVERY SINGLE GAME EVER MADE

To all the Doomy People Ever:

Ugh, just stop it. If you don’t like the game, don’t play it. If you need reassurance from other’s agreement with your opinions then don’t just stop playing, stop playing and start seeing a counselor.

True, I do not know what the lists are for every game but here is the partial list for Second Life. I am guessing it is similar.

Changing the official forums to new software
Raising the price for sims (ie, maps)
Moving some content to a different server (region)
hiding said content listings … unfortunately by an automated keyword list that produced cats
raising costs of land
removing the educational/npo discount for sims (eventually reversed)
changing the official forums yet again
staff changes
every time the company worked on a new product (although unofficially calling the latest SL2 did not help)
getting rid of the mentor program
changing the policy for character names
reversing any policy change
on and on … pretty much any change had doomsayers to one extent or another

Like other games/virtual worlds the expected happened: some people left but most stayed and adjusted. So when people say that such-and-such is the end of game X people will respond with ‘can we have your stuff’ as we have all seen it happen before here or in another game.

It seems pretty obvious they’re pulling an ‘all hands on deck’ sprint to get HoT done before the holiday shopping season passes them by. Don’t expect to see a lot of anything other than them grinding through the work in front of them relating to HoT. Even the usually clockwork-like Black Lion RMT team has been skipping weekly releases — almost certainly so they can pitch in on the big push.

The thing is though companies like Anet can not bring on everyone. There are all specialists. For example, I am a web programmer. Sure, I could be loaned to the applications team if something they did were that much of a rush priority. Even though I know some of it they would not want to put me in networking because that is not my specialty.

The people who would be doing an anniversary are more the designers than the programmers.

It is hard to predict when games will die. A virtual world I use has had many points where people declared it would be the end, it even became a running joke whenever they changed one policy or another. The latest is the company is working on another product right now.

That is second life. They had their beta in what, 2003? I highly doubt GW2 is going anywhere soon.

I dabble in all game modes (PvX), but I also add something to the game on my OWN, which has helped my boredom!

ROLE PLAYING!

Yes, trust me, role playing adds so much more to a MMORPG, because you actually act as your character, develop a story, and even travel Tyria, in a whole new way when you incorporate roleplaying. I have gone on many adventures with other Roleplayers during my time in Tyria, and let me tell you, without RPing, id be bored by now. You see the game differently than just grind, grind, grind. Sadly lots of people in GW2 and other MMOs are GRIND ZOMBIES and do not realize that by Roleplaying and getting in touch with your character, do you really open up other exciting ways to play a MMORPG.

We should rp, i wanna try! :P

I do not RP (I suppose I should look if any of my guilds do it) but give each one of my characters a distinct personality. For example, if I took my warrior to fight Teq she would wind up with a kill-me-now attitude. I am not talking builds, I am talking personalities.

The stuff in anything under 80 is boring, yeah. I have been almost everywhere so many times that there are not a lot of surprises. Even anything new in them often fits the theme going around it.

Level 80 zones (outside of safe areas, like forts) keep you on your toes though. Try taking a casual stroll through SW or Cursed Shore. Sure, you will see patterns like where monsters are quickly but you will always have to keep an eye out.

Menadena.7482

The ping is a lie! The ping is a lie! (sorry, been listening to a BIT too many variations of ‘Still Alive’ this afternoon)

Anyways, yes, as was pointed out earlier the ping command only shows the time from your machine to the server. The servers themselves are reporting something entirely different: it is less about how far on the network another machine is (in fact, it is probably in the same room or facility) but how fast it is responding to the first machine.

You are doing slightly different things at completely different levels (network level and applications level if I remember my OSI terminology correctly) so it is unfortunate in that regard. Still though, they both are vaguely similar as a diagnostic tool:
1) can you see the other machine (if not, you have bigger problems than a ping failing)
2) roughly how good is my connection compared to other times I have pinged it (if ping www.google.com normally gives you around 300 ms then 400 is nothing to panic about but 2000 might be)

mesmer: Teq, then head back to LA, when done there wp to wait for the wurm
warrior: jump to orr to grab a vista
engineer: head over to the shiverpeaks to do a bit of mining, back to LA
mesmer: do wurm, still have buffs from the Teq banner during it, back to LA
warrior: have some buffs from a nearby banner before, jump over to mine T6s in Cursed Shore and assault the temple at Arah, back to LA
At various times log in my guardian and elemenalist to do a bit of crafting

Oh yeah, log in my alt account so I do not forget the login reward there

This is a typical day. All of my buffed characters still had their buffs after the second event due to some close timing but stopping at the bank all the time would REALLY present an annoyance.

Incoming Mentor Track

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Menadena.7482

Menadena.7482

I would rather keep it in PVE. I do not use it in WvW since it would just clutter the map so not letting me use it in PVE would be saying I had wasted 300 gold.

My main original reason for getting it was mentoring and yes, the mentor tag would work just fine there. There are two other places though and both I use regularly: everyone turns it on in many champ trains to tell who is where and people organizing events need it for coordination. In neither case would I want someone asking me questions so a mentor tag is certainly a needed option (I probably would have skipped buying the commander tag if I knew we would have one) to complement a commander tag.

At the moment I use my commander tag for mentoring. I often tell people if they see a colored arrow in a low level area they should feel free to ask questions of that person.

The problem is one of people abusing either tag as a status symbol. I am not sure how you could fix that, even if you made it reportable how could you prove it?

side comment: I use another virtual space where everyone is represented by an icon on the map. Not only do people not complain but many would yell if it were removed since a bunch of those icons all clustered together means high odds that something is going on there.

It would be nice to see a restored version as the rubble looks like it was formerly impressive. Maybe a slow series of inroads from Maguuma vs all-at-once like LA (after them hammering on bridges for most of a year).

What I would be upset about is losing the temple assaults though. Something else would have to take their place. I also would be REALLY upset if they took away the T6 nodes … spitting fur upset.

It really depends on what you want it for. The status symbol or can you actually use it?

I bought mine before mentor tags were announced to do mentoring (calling attention to myself on low-level maps with ‘why is that arrow over your head’). It was a bit annoying when people later got it for free, but hey. I also use it when I am organizing an event so people can tell who is part of the zerg and who is coordinating information.

Environment for a new player

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Menadena.7482

Menadena.7482

I would say the learning curve is roughly equal to (or in some cases less than) other popular MMOs. You will find PLENTY to do in the starter zone, especially on your first character, but if you do get bored and are not beyond 15 or so yet you can get to the other race’s starter zones by going into your racial city and taking their gate to Lion’s Arch (which has gates to every city).

Price-wise, lower level stuff is usually cheaper. The items a level 80 will want are about 2 magnitudes over what you will pay for equivalent gear at lower levels. Actually, the stuff for 80s can be even higher depending on what you want.

Look for people with colored arrows above them in the lower-level areas of starter zones. Often they are used for organization or bragging rights in anything higher but if they are wearing such (a commander tag) in an area less than level 10 odds are they are there to help new players.

in Players Helping Players

Menadena.7482

It can help to turn your graphics to the minimum settings. Not because it will cause less of a load to your system (although it will) but because there is less network traffic if your ISP suddenly starts throttling things. When you go from one map to another you are really going from one server to another so there are a few network issues that could cause a delay in connecting to the second server (everything from latency to dns entries not resolving correctly), which would disconnect you because the first server considers you gone now.

Yes, how many skill slots are available unlock as you level. You get points you can spend on skills and/or traits. Even without doing any hero challenges at all you will have enough points by 80 to unlock every skill and trait for your class. The reason to do hero challenges is so you can get the points faster rather than having to do several levels before you can train in new skills and traits.

Yes, unless you have been everywhere and done everything it is pretty much a certainty you will find something new. Maybe not as much in <70 zones (how many times can you escort a dolyak) for all your characters but certainly in places like SW, DT, Southsun, and Orr. Another fun challenge is mentoring new players, rather than the same old events (yawn, the next champ in this boss event will span in 4 minutes and 38 seconds) you can never predict what humans will do.

With Berserker it only activates under certain circumstances. So do you then stop what you are doing (while your adrenaline goes down) to equip the elite weapon and hope it did not swap out the one you wanted to be able to switch to?

Ummm… well yeah, the permanent pass only works on one character at a time. I usually move it to whichever character I’m playing that day. Unless it’s no longer account bound and I didn’t notice, one only needs to perform the overly onerous chore of dragging and dropping the pass through the bank. I guess that’s too difficult and time-consuming for some. I’d rather have one stop shopping than bounce around the world.

That day? Unless I am specifically leveling someone I cycle through several characters each afternoon. True, a trip to the bank does not take up much time, especially since the area between the bank and the merchant is my home base when in LA, but I can see it getting annoying fast when trying to do a fast swap to another character like when both of them have time-limited buffs going or one is parked nowhere near a bank. Not that it is hugely critical: I typically travel with mainly 20 slot bags and only stop to unpack chests when I am in a city.

Hmm, I wonder what will be on sale today? Hopefully when/if character slots go on sale it will not go up to the normal price after buying just one.

Silverwastes. 80g a day you say? Uhhh...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Menadena.7482

Menadena.7482

To try and bring this back to the original question. While people may be able to do 80g in 8 (or more) hours they are probably being VERY lucky and/or extrapolating from a good run. Plus, as was pointed out, after a certain period of time your returns diminish. Which means you could not do 8 hours in a row anyhow. Lets say you could. While I can buy an 8 hour game session (pretty easy on a weekend) to get the claimed result you would need to be doing mindless grinding the entire time, constantly on chest/event trains (except if you need to buy more keys), and generally not having fun. I prefer to play a few hours on each character than switch as I think of each with a different personality and different parts of the world/events that they like. For example, my guardian would be bored out of her mind if she had to go to teq but my ele and mesmer LOVE it. It is not just the class either, I could roll another one of those two classes and they might also not be interested in teq with the same exact build. While sometimes what they are interested in fits their race other times it does not, for example, my Asura is the one that LOVES the Shiverpeaks the most, even more than my Norn (who is the one who has the most fun in Orr). As I said, each has a different personality so I can always use a different one to change things up a bit. Basically, do what you think is fun rather than what will net the most gold. If grinding for 8 hours is your thing, ok, it is not mine though. It probably does net the biggest raw profit if you salvage everything but Cursed Shore is a respectable second with more variety.

Bored of low level zones? Taking someone to Orr will wake you up fast because it will keep you on your toes. As a bonus you will get some nice mats though, including T6s. If Orr is not your thing head to a map you have not been to lately and you will probably find something new or something you had forgotten.

To answer recent posts that mindset actually helps the videogame industry. Not only are you doing what was intended, having fun, but you are putting money into the economy and thus the company’s hands. As to getting another job … how much gold do you need anyhow? I would hope someone who has the luxury to buy/play a game would have a few spare dollars and their time in game/at work would be worth more than a dollar an hour or you REALLY need to reexamine your priorities. Games are for having fun, not mindlessly grinding, so just buying your gold means you have more time for fun.
