Still holding out hope for Scarlet’s armor skins tomorrow.
Jory’s is in my top 3 and already in the store (not that I would not sneeze at that of pretty much any major character, someone will use them). Right behind character slots and transmutation charges. If all 3 went on a good sale price tomorrow, especially with no limits to quantities, I would be VERY happy!
I have a vague recollection of reading that there were “too many parts” eg: sigils/runes etc to make build templates a simple thing.
But:
I used to play EvE online, and you could save “ship templates..” Now, I know that its a wildly different game, built on a fully different engine but to my way of thinking EvE had more “parts” to keep track of: Up to 8 different guns/missile launchers . Up to 8 medium slots (our armor if you want) and up to 8 low slots. Each of these slots could have different things in.
I think they were saved locally to a text file or something.
Tbh, we’ll probably see build templates at some point, as someone mentioned: Due to raids coming in the devs have said that you would likely use traits etc that you never thought to use, and switching from “Raid to PvE to PvP to Wvw” etc etc would be a little bit tedious IMO..
If they were all saved to a single file somewhere (local, server, format …. it does not really matter) the tool is much more straightforward (not exactly trivial, but you have a better idea of what to change). If you have a thousand routines all over it becomes a bit of a mess.
Yesterday it was 1 gold for every 6 gems, so around 133 gold/gems, right? Which would mean it would need to drop to 82 gold per 800 gems, right? The conversion history chart I found only lists prices in gold so I have two VERY simple questions.
1) How do I know when the 900 gold I bought will make more gems than I bought it with in ‘get more gems’?
2) What is the ballpark average price, ie, would I look for a turnaround in a month when it settles to that or a year when the market spikes?
Remember you are talking to a programmer, not an economist.
So I am guessing if I see something I REALLY want to buy on the gemstore in the next week I would be better off buying more gems? Which is annoying since I had hoped to buy some things not long after the sale ended and I have all this money in gold to convert to gems at some point.
edit: If we are talking only a possible gain of a few gold (I bought 900 gold last night) I will just go ‘whups’, convert it back, and remember not to do it again. After all, I make several gold a day just hitting resource nodes and salvaging (that does not even count materials like ecto that I bank).

I think such a tool will promote different builds because it will be easier to do so and many players will find that zerker gear is not necessarily the best for every situation. They will have the tool to try different builds without much hassle.
I agree it might promote using builds found on the internet. But where do you think zerkers found that ONE build they are using now? And zerkers are supposed to be majority of current player base.
That is along the lines of what I was thinking. In addition to it making it easier to swap things (just another weapon outside of your secondary is annoying enough) it would also put an end to snobs saying things like “if you are not running zerker you are doing it wrong”. Give me tips like what traits are best for a profession to concentrate on, fine. Just do not insist my build be a clone of everyone else in tyria running that profession.
For example, when possible, I prefer to have a ranged weapon and a melee weapon that I swap between as appropriate. I am sure people would vocally suggest not to do that with all professions but it works for me.
So lets say someone converts 800 GEMS into 150 Gold, about what the current exchange is right now. If they were to save that 150 gold for after this sale and when exchange rates goes back to normal, that 150 gold can possibly be exchanged again for more than 800 GEMs?
The market does not work like that. In order to convert gold to get your original 800 gems you will have to put in far more gold than what was paid out when you did the exchange dues to the ratios
Umm …. sure you do not have it backwards? Say you guy gold at 2X/gem one day and then a few days later that amount goes down to X/gem. If I sell my gold to gems I wind up with twice as many gems as you had originally.
It only looks backwards because there are two mediums of exchange involved. One is fixed to RL currency (gems) and the other is not (gold).
BTW, I exchanged 50 or 60$ of gems last night at 6 gems per gold (ie, 133 gold per 800 gems). I seem to vaguely recall that is double the normal price? Which is half what I heard reports of earlier. Are people dumping that many gems already?
edit: ack! I forgot about the exchange fees! So what would I need to see for gold→gems in order to make money and is that the normal price?

This!!!
It makes sense for them to gather where players are not likely to go, fine. But why gather in front of the bank and TP? Has nobody at anet realized enough players will be there anyway?
Speaking of soundtracks I have lately started doing something to make my characters feel even more different than I already consider them. All of them have their own itunes playlist with completely different styles (country, electronica, hard metal, classical, etc).
As soon as possible (15 if FTP) get off of the starter maps. I enjoy going to a map that is a slightly higher level than me as it keeps me on my toes to figure out how to accomplish things when anything could kill me. There are some places that are great for leveling in PVE. For example, there is a boss in a low level area (so you know what time they happen) with 3 or 4 events and some treasure to boot. Another good place is Kessex Hills as you can get 2 levels there easy running between centaur war events and occasionally hitting one of the toxic creature ones. It is, what, level 25 or so which means it will be doable soon if not already.
I agree about WP. Even if you never plan on returning to the zone again with that character you never know when you will need the WPs there for something, just running around to get them will give you bursts of XP as well so it is not lost time.
I am going to insta-80 my revenant. Not just to escape the grind, but so I can learn the mechanics at 80.
They might be aiming to connect them. For example, an event that is mostly in the ‘classic’ regions but to complete it fully you need to be able to go to VB.
BTW, will the last items to go on sale be tomorrow morning (PST) or thursday morning (PST)?
While not sure, I want to say the last item is Thursday since it supposed to end Friday, though maybe Friday might have the final item.
Thanks, at this point I just want the sale to end. For the most part it has had nothing good but has put off some planned purchases I might have made.
So would right now be the best time to convert GEMs into Gold? Highest rate of return is right now?
Yes, even better is to do that now then convert them back to gems when the exchange rate settles back down to where it was before.
“Disposable”? Compare it to a game with a subscription fee, which tons of people pay gladly. What do they average per month? Ten? Twenty? Buying 800 gems every couple of months does not even come close.
Sure, it gets expensive if you buy everything it the store but not if you look closely at what you need. I have no need for bag slots. I have only bought a few minis, outfits, and skins. Gathering tools? Quagan hats?
I look at it to ways:
1) How much per month would I spend on ANY hobby? From a subscription MMO to doing needlepoint (where you can spend a lot on colored threads and stuff).
2) How much is my time worth? My salary must be pretty bad if gold farming is a productive use of the few hours I have off.
BTW, will the last items to go on sale be tomorrow morning (PST) or thursday morning (PST)?
I do have to wonder if APs have gone up or down because of the daily change? Yes, you get more APs if you do 3 but gone are the days when you could do one or two and get something. What the average time a new player will take to hit the AP limit from dailies will be interesting to see. Since 15000 divided by 6 is 2500, or around 6 1/2 years and it is now closer to 4 1/2 I am wondering what the effect of people going ‘meh’ at dailies will be?
I need to count up my AP from actual achievements and see what earned what. It does seem a bit bizarre that dosomehugetask is one AP. Meanwhile AFKing in an event/view from a WP you have been to countless times/throw some random junk in the mystic toilet is worth 10 AP?
For calculating things like chests, sure, include dailies. For what gets displayed to others: only show the total from ACTUAL achievements, not something a vet could do with their eyes closed.
It would be great for anything that has multiple parts. For example, in Teq when I am on my ele I can switch attunements to what is best on the zerg attack phases (water so I can do some damage while also helping to heal the zerg) and what to use in defense stages (fire! my major concern there is damaging hordes). What I do not have time to change are things like go in my inventory and swap out my staff for d/d.

No idea what it would be on a PC but I use Carbon Copy Cloner on my mac. It is 40 dollars but has all sorts of fun features.
I am assuming you will want to stop clicking now and then anyways so you do not have 80 bouncing diamonds?
Have you thought about moving to an SSD? Projections say their prices will rival HDD’s next year and with Cannonlake all the bus kinks for PCIe SSDs should be worked out, making them objectively better than the bottlenecked SATA III SSDs. PCIe busses weren’t meant to accommodate a data storage medium, but since PCIe SSDs are out they’re working on it.
I am guessing you did not read my specs fully (edted them to clarify). My system stuff, caches, and applications (except for huge ones) ARE on my ssd. I have multiple drives.
No, it is not one of those fusion drives either. It is a top-of-the-line third-party SSD connected via the USB3 bus. After doing some research, a usb3 rivals the speed of thunderbolt1 (which is slightly faster depends on who you ask), my other interface option, and I only use the rest of the usb bus for things like mice and my phone.

Outfit is so-so … some parts I like, like the helmet. If it were on sale I would nab it but for 700 gems?
Windows has a near monopoly on operating systems. Apple should sell their OS as a separate product. It’d be great if more companies produced operating systems without the flat, banal design scheme and useless resource hogs in the background. Apple has a much better interface (I’m not familiar with their newer ones though so they may be following the flat lazy design trend too) since they utilize more colors and details, but like someone else mentioned you don’t have any control over your hardware, and they’re overpriced. Want a new graphic card? Sorry, Mac doesn’t play that way.
True, with macs your expandability is via the thunderbolt connection. Although that means external stuff and yet another cable. When I buy a new one, because of the fact they are essentially a sealed unit, I buy the machine I will want 5 years from now rather than what I will need today. For example, all the specs above are for a model that is almost 2 years old, when I am designing a mac to get I turn up almost all the knobs to the max. I have a machine with as good (better in some ways) specs here as I followed the same philosophy on my spouse’s machine and that one is the current model.
Yes, people keep blaming macs gaming performance on, well, because they are macs. The only reason they do not do so for linux is because it has such a small user base, especially in gaming.
The problem is these emulation layers we keep getting. If we had a native port it would FLY. I would gladly put the specs of my mac against that used by the typical PC user any day.
What is your mac specs anyways?
3,5 GHz i7
24 GB DDR3 RAM
startup: 512 GB SSD (OWC Mercury extreme pro – 6G)
data disk: 3 GB HDD
nvidia GeForce GTX 780M (with 4 GB of memory)
4 GB time machine hourly backup, daily systems drive backup, another backup system too that I do not bother to use yet
usb3, thunderboilt, etc
I was going to go with a mac pro before they redid the design. I have been buying apples since the apple ][ and have only had one die on me … several years after the HDD fan broke. Most were around a couple decades before I recycled them.
Are custom-built gaming pcs faster? Sure, by definition you can put anything in them. Is it faster than the average non-custom PC people use for guild wars? You bet your kitty-cat it is.

Mac gamers are very small in gaming as well, typically below 5% of gamers. Considering they haven’t been making a native version of this game for Mac probably means it would be to expensive and not worth it for for them to port the game over to OpenGL.
That is not what I was saying. Simply that the ‘haw! haw! you have a mac! you will run bad!’ is not the fault of the mac. It is our client is really the PC client run under emulation.
Yes, we get shortchanged in the gpu department but I bought the biggest one apple sells for their consumer machines. Not that it makes a lot of difference, GW2 is cpu-bound, not GPU-bound.
For example, last night I was in a crowded boss fight. The person I was partied with reported a FPS in the single digits. Meanwhile I was in the 50s and get that everywhere. To be fair though, he was probably trying to keep his settings too high … a bug appeared in the mac client several years ago that forces us to keep graphics settings lower than everyone else.
I wish they would combine the old and new systems. Right now dailies are an all-or-nothing proposition (plus they have been changed to be completely random). If I am feeling ‘meh’ about dailies that day I had better do all 3 … because if I only do 2 I get no AP or shards.
I did a little of the first beta in VB, but for most of the time I was betaing I was out in the open world playing with the new mechanics.
Finding it ironic that people’s reason not to see Sya (taking the focus off the main character) while people in another thread are fine with another NPC (Dougal) having a role.
So people want to see one NPC (Dougal) in HOT but in another thread today they said they did not want to see another NPC (Sya) there because a NPC there would take the focus off of the player?
Am I the only one seeing the irony in this?
Bank access express? I get those all the time with login rewards and are pretty pointless since you can just duck into the mists. Hopefully something better tomorrow as it is a holiday in the US.
If they wipe them too soon and you are afraid of losing the name just roll a character with that name. It is not a character you will actually use, just a placeholder to be deleted when HOT comes out. Give them the name you want to keep.

I would LOVE to see her role expanded! Right now that role is her saying a canned bit to you and saying pretty much the same thing to Helena.
One of my characters, Sya Kello, is a homage character to her and also a human mesmer. As close as possible to the color scheme. Same outfit (except for the pauldrons). In the backstory for her (which I write for all of my characters) she transitioned because she had the soul/spirit from Kess (using the mythology that reincarnation is time-independent).
The person who created her tweeted that she did not think many people would notice. I think she was a bit wrong on that point.
1) I want to be surprised.
2) I need to level my latest character.
3) If I get a REALLY good drop I would not be able to keep it.
I realize the reason for (3) but things are not getting a thorough test as they would when played. Sure, I have seen a Ventari tablet at a big event but that is the exception rather than the rule.
I dont mind farming Silverwaste, but it feels like its the ONLY way to get shards now
I think I have only seen one drop from the SW. A couple times I have had it drop from the krait at the lab while waiting for Teq but that is it.
They really nerfed them when they changed from skill points. Teq used to give 3-pt scrolls practically all the time. They took away those scrolls from his loot but did not replace them with shards.
What I really get annoyed at is when they have done the bouncy chest icon. I get it, they want people to buy it. I bought a second account before f2p though and could see no good reason to upgrade that account for hot.
As a mesmer I know to practice safe hex. Never use somebody else’s portal without knowing where it will end up or being reasonably certain and willing to live with it if you are wrong.
In some cases you can take a guess though. When placing bombs at Tasha’s gate there is enough certainty to know a portal there will go to one of the 3 bomb locations, you just do not know which one.
I have also ran into the portal at a megadestroyer chest in the lava and died. I am not sure why the chest lands there or how the mesmer even does it without burning. Then again, I avoid doing megadestroyer if at all possible anyway.

I really wish there was some way of knowing the sales in advance without ruining the surprise. That would give us time to think about our priorities and how we would use them. For example, I did not buy the rug, even though it was a great sale, because I could not think of a way any of my characters would use it except as a novelty. On the other hand, I DID buy the white wings because they fit perfectly with the theme one character is going for.
I have a feeling this is going to be an interesting experience. When I mentor in second life it is not hard to tell what country had an article about it or something.
Yesterday I had someone new ask me about the guild I was in (LGBT). When I responded it was what it said they replied they did not know much about guilds. I gave our web address. If the person is LGBT, great, they found what they were looking for. If not they will quickly realize from the site they asked about the wrong guild.
I am not sure what would be the best level. You want it where someone in the level of the zone it is in can kill it and get some loot that makes them want to come back again but at the same time they need to work for wiping out that boss.
Basically, we do not need a claw of jormag type thing for them. An event that is hard to do without dying … and then gives you rewards that are not much better that a couple of goes at the shaman.
So, good news if you are running late I guess?
I actually would love to see a rehash. I came in late in it so by the time I found my feet it was over. Plus it would allow me to think how far my menagerie has evolved since then.
Hey! This means I get a title and some stuff for a Samhain gift. Cool beans! I can use that 20 scroll for the Revenant I will be getting about the same time.
I thought on the last weekend they trotted everything out again in case anyone missed something the first time?
where are the toilets?
it has been more than 3 years and i just realized that there are no toilets in tyria.
Next to the bank WP in LA.
This might be bad timing. A lot of guilds are holding off on active recruiting while there is the initial rush of F2P players.
Unlikely. Remember, there can not be just one server, but there need be three (WvW.)
There have been a couple of threads recently discussing this in the pertinent sub-forums.
Good luck.
Actually, the cost of servers is peanuts. It is the data center where you get into the big bucks. Rather than a dedicated facility for each game they would probably lease servers at a local data center. Which means they would need a big user base there to support that cost.
I seriously think that servers need to reserver your spot for a minute if you disconnect, so that you don’t lose progress in any major events.
I disconnected towards the end of a tequatl run today, logged back in and I was on a different map. I’ve also had a few situations in Silverwastes where I take part in all the events leading up to the breach, just to disconnect during the breach and unable to join back in due to the map being full.Either this or you need to do something about the constant mac client crashes in highly populated events.
Either myself or a member of my party will have this happen often in Teq, no matter how low we put the graphics settings to. Even if we fix what disconnected us and get back in in a matter of a few seconds (yeah, right, when it disconnects it usually crashes pretty hard) we can not taxi back to the map we had just put a lot of work into before teq is over.
What would be wicked awesome is if we had outfits designed around various personages in the LS and PS, especially the ones that wore some sort of a uniform. For some you can recreate the look from skins that are out there (although having an outfit would be good for leveling, where your armor changes every few minutes) but for others not. The skins exist somewhere, albeit most probably in a different format, so it would be easier than starting from scratch (especially for that race).
For consistency’s sake you report every political reference and everyone in the LGBT guild, right?
Under that logic one of my characters would have been reported several times. Not only am I in the LGBT guild but she is named after Sya, the transgendered NPC in Lion’s Arch. At least one person picked up on it.
Too add to it I write backstories for all of my characters. I am considering having her be the reincarnation of Kess (another one is Jory as an asura) hence why the NPC transitioned in the first place.
I have seen a character named after a political figure but ‘accidentally’ misspelled. In that case it is not the name, but how they acted.

So Anet should base their PvE Design on someone who found pretty much all MMO PvE Boring?
I dislike baseball, so here what I would do to make this sport more fun…..
They already do something akin to that. All of those strange nerfs we get in pve are solely to balance things for pvp.
The opposite brings its own fun. In second life (and elsewhere) characters are physical. This leads to two games:
“let’s all push the afker somewhere they do not want to be”
“just how high a stack of players CAN we make before someone moves”
