When did D/D ele become good again?

Ele had big power creep, not because of buffs to the ele class, but because ele benefited more than anyone else from having access to three full trait lines.

lol just no. Not only did mesmer get more things put into baseline (a GM trait became free) but they also benefit more by literally combing multiple old builds into one (PU + shatter now.)

Eles ALWAYS went into 3 trait lines before spec patch. We run practically same build before and after. We aren’t suddenly running two builds like mesmer. Always water/arcane. The fire (or air) line is nice, but about on par for the rest of what everyone else got. Especially when you consider the nerfs in arcane and air.

Basically what other’s said – the two main cele builds that competed for cele players use shoutbow and cele engi got nerfed. Now all those players play cele ele as it is practically the only cele viable. Honestly I don’t think it got buffed more than other builds that stayed in use. And mesmer for instance got buffed a LOT more than ele. Its just the best cele now.

Combine that with the fact that D/D cele ele is pretty much our only viable and played build, and that players are always jealous of the idea of hybrid/cele builds. So all the complaints now fall on eles.

You have the better leap on offhand dagger…

This is to any critic – Have you been in an organized wvw melee/front line or “hammer train” as they call it? Well if you have try running an ele build and let me know how well it keeps up with that/those “leap(s)” and how effective it is compared to warrior and guardian.

burning speed – its not a leap/leap finisher, doesn’t have a leap CD, and saved for damage and evading

ride the lightning – even more wrong with this – can’t use warhorn, its not a leap/leap finisher, doesn’t have a leap CD, is often saved for escape because of its enormous CD and eles low defense

Magnetic Grasp – probably the closest thing we actually have to a leap except its not – its a projectile and requires a target. Very very often leap finishers are used to combo from fields as well as to push the train forward at tactical times (with no targets)

Further creating the problem is the overload mechanic. Even if you somehow find something like the above (what we already have) acceptable we will now be locked out for 15-20sec if we ever use overload….so we won’t have access to one of the lines or only have access to one of the lines…

Clearly we need more options if they want it to be a front liner.

So I can’t remember my password and it’s one of two old emails… Serial code is long gone.

I got into one old email, went back through the records. I have my first ever playNC account name, from city of heroes and a 10 year old petition, but not seeing guild wars 1 stuff except for adverts.

Were accounts separate back then or was there a master account? If master then I have something I suppose. Or for some reason I had both ncsoft games on two separate emails. And hotmail is being a kitten about letting me back in. Hmm

What did the emails go by back then? NCsoft PlayNC etc?

Storm of the Century (shout) 120 sec CD Lasts 5 seconds
medium cast (~1-2sec), meteor size PbAoE (pulses outward once a sec from area cast)
For each sec an enemy stands the area and gets hit by a wave:
*2x vuln
*chill (1s), OR blind (1s) OR daze (1/4)
*Low damage (~100) + ~2sec of burn OR +4 sec of bleed

Visual – imagine hellfire, lightning, and ice. (Really just overlay some of the shouts + glyph of storm effects)

Its basically a damaging (because its an elite ) and ele’s version of chaos storm.

Needs a few tweaks – but I think it’d be useful in both PvE and PvP

Very very well thought out post. My experience is the same. The devs need to read this and implement something similar. It HAS to have movement and/or invuln and/or blocks to be front line (some combo depending on skills/cds). That is just a fact. So I am very confused with what they have presented us so far.

If D/D with a move skill at 20sec (if it hits) and D/F with an invuln are NOT good enough to be front line builds … and then you give us something with even less potential … I mean come on…

Realistic way to nerf Ele?

in PvP

Mightybird.6034

I really don’t think eles are OP, or if they are; barely. Most of the suggestions are a joke with how bad it would gut the class. I play all classes btw.

I can largely ignore eles because most of their big damage is easy to avoid. Can’t say the same for god like mesmers atm or a rampaging warrior or lich form necro. But skilled players don’t often main warriors or necros. And guardians are far far better at bunkering.

And I think its more an issue of players complaining not about eles but about being out played by better players. They look at the class, and its an ele so they blame the class instead of looking at themselves.

Honestly, you’re complaining about a class that is mediocre at everything. Learn to avoid the big hits and largely avoid them unless you outnumber them (which is a good general policy for pvp in this game). Eles are good at 1v1s (not even the best) but that in no way makes them OP as this isn’t a game balanced around 1v1s.

Seriously stop trying to 1v1 an ele (and standing in their fire) and then complain when you get beat.

mesmer blink and thief shadow step never leave my bar either. Especially mesmer blink. No offense but you’re a bad mesmer if you aren’t using it offensively :P

Setting up – 1. shatters and 2. GS 2 is the most common (to get the sword to bounce fully and to get the might on yourself)

(thief every once in awhile if i’m playing S/D and have unlimited teles on my weapon)

So no, I’d say those are just as important as ele’s. And the comparisons are pretty direct. No reason for ele to be different.

All about timing, being quick to damage them when they are revealed. Having AoE ready if they SR, etc.

Once you face enough thiefs you can get pretty good at fighting them. Mesmers are the same way, altho atm they are pretty OP so even bad ones are super tough.

Warhorn is seriously lacking… Its like if they made scepter an offhand….horrible…

Bosses mine as well be unaffected by blinds and no one just stands in a pulsing blind in pvp (thief has one…rarely uses it), stationary water fields are better in staff for pve/wvw/pvp (ya have fun getting a group to blast a moving field…lol), fire field uptime on d/d or s/d is FAR higher than the warhorn….I could go on. Nothing in warhorn is better..

FURTHER No reflects, no invulns, no blocks, no move or tele skill, no damage multiplier in traits…..trash.

Unless youre on teamspeak with an organized group (or just high level ranked pvp) there is little to no counter play to these elites (for most classes, I’m aware of some tricks.)

Its not fun to play against. Not even very fun to use (long cd skills where you end up mostly AAing…) except initially because of the powerful feel.

While looking at elites with HoT please look at ALL of them. Please re-work into something more interesting that is both fun to use and fun to play against.

At the very least, nerf the auto attack, and make the other skills more reliable and powerful to use, so that there is some skill in these elites.

It use to be a trend in PvP to fight naked, it wasn’t a form of sabotage or anything, it was used as a way of protest to show how annoyed people were over the PvP rank changes.

The one guy I talked to definitely wasn’t protesting anything (was full of himself and terrible btw). The other two I tried talking to (never know maybe they didn’t even know) and from how they were acting it was trollish/drunk.

Also, unless I’m missing something, that sounds like an absolute asinine way to protest something that in no way affects anet. Like those fake godawful online petitions.

Ele Vs Mesemer

Mightybird.6034

I’m confused, people complaining about d/d cele ele or something else?

d/d cele is good and all but OP? eh? I pvp every day on multiple classes, ranked and unranked. Mid level, not the best nor the worst. Never have I been owned by an ele (beaten sure, but not like “owned”) and never not been able to do anything about it. The super bunkery ones can’t do any damage. The more meta cele build is just decent all around, but still goes down super easy under any kind of spike damage (or just runs away and you cap…not very dangerous usually.)

Mesmer….I’ve had my character stunned and been downed in one go without a thing I can do about it on some classes. While they have better survivability than a thief… I like playing my mesmer but…they need some toning down somewhere.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Mightybird.6034

Mightybird.6034

What would happen if conjures had their CDs tied to attunement? Like For icebow you could switch to icebow OR water and it’d make the other go on CD. But OTOH conjures would be more freely available. Kind of like engis kits but w/ the attunement CDs. Obviously further balancing would need to be done afterward.

I’m honestly not sure if itd be worse or OP tbh.

PS this isn’t a suggestion to immediately fix everything. The problem is that if they nerf icebow then it becomes like the rest of the conjures, basically NEVER used. Instead the suggestion is to make it so that they can be put into a better position to balance them.

Have the critics even played an engi or ele? Especially Ele? (at least engi has ranged kits) When Ele uses D/D for instance, they have no range. Swapping to air or earth doesn’t suddenly give them a 1200 range weapon. In PvE at least you HAVE to range some bosses. Its a rather clunky and bad design and should be fixed with HoT.
Summons barely function beyond using one or two skills. There is sort of lightning hammer (altho that’s melee anyway, used for AA.) No one summons a frost bow for instance and uses its AA. (no good eles..)

Either 1. give eles out of combat weapon swap or
2. take off charges on summoned weapons and lower CDs (10-20sec) So they work like engis and are at least on par with them

You have out of combat weapon swapping.

my ascended dagger gets put in my sell/salvage bag area every time (even though I’m switching to invis bag, etc) I switch to staff. For whatever reason. Its beyond annoying. That isn’t what I’d call ‘weapon swapping. ’ And if all classes had to do this to switch, PREEEEEEETTTYYY sure you’d be up in arms about it too. It gets 10x worse if I switch multiple times/offhands/etc. I am so super paranoid one of these days I will accidentally sell one of my ascended weapons then log off/change zones before I can buy back.

Yall realize IF we got sword we would have gotten 4 AAs very very similar to daggger I mean you can’t make it better than dagger, can’t give it MORE range than dagger OR less (a sword with less range than a dagger? can you imagine the complaints), can’t give it better dps (or why use dagger) …. see what I mean? edit only legit thing I guess is a bit more burst, still if it was hands down more burst it’d be like scepter melee….no thx

I suppose it could be a ranged sword and compete with scepter? But scepter is already kind of niche… SO that means we would have gotten 8 skills (2×4 since autoattacks would be like the same as daggers on sword) anyway. Same amount as warhorn.

Sure sword could have been a different melee choice…but dagger is already very good and balanced. Sword AAs at least, likely would have been disapointing.

HOPEFULLY with warhorn they will be more powerful than 2 and 3 than the one we would have gotten on sword.

Besides, I wasn’t thinking of running of full build with it, but more like zerk armor with PCP trinkets. My ele and guard do a ton of burn without trying. A lil condi dmg without losing power seems like it’d be better than the ferocity.

And before you say switch em out, I mean I literally tend to wander between both and let my whim take me where ever. Sometimes its D/D in a small party but usually still staff.

Hmm yes it is true that i have trouble finding my own niche where people appreciate some support and not full dps. Though i think it doesn’t make sense that i ask my party member to change their stat preference just so that i can heal em. I thought the idea of supporting was to keep your ally alive so they can perform at their utmost potential.

Also the 15 v 20 situation you were talking about is very situational. I wouldn’t be able to play with whomever i like, there is most definitely going to be another pug who may possible overlap my water field. It just isn’t reliable

However, your comment sort of gave me a lil more confidence to try my full heal builds again. Thanks again for your reply

You don’t need to ask your party member to change stats. Just start your own group with a desc something like “no skips non meta” or “casual” etc people will automatically join who have some toughness.

As to wvw. There are guilds who specialize in being out numbered I’ve been a part of them. They are so hardcore I’ve had one recruit me in the past and pay for my server transfer If you are into it you need only find one. They’ll run with 10-20 and contest much larger zergs. TBH tho I am not sure you would enjoy them, they are very hardcore crowd. You will have to run things there way most likely (I did not enjoy it personally.) But maybe you can find a better guild than I was in…

Oh, also, have you tried high level fractals? there tends to be a lot more willingness and wiggle room there for defense/support builds since it starts to get so nasty. In the 40-50 range. The really good types still tend to run zerk builds but those are usually organized guild groups who don’t LFG as much. The LFG in my experience tend to be more open to support builds funnily enough.

have you tried a guardian mace/focus build with a lot of PVT gear and maybe some celestial/cleric trinkets? Its like a tank + healer in one bro…

Mhmm i’ve tried but there never seemed to be enough heals to keep my ally alive. I’ve been kicked out of many dungeons because they tell me healing/tanking just isn’t viable in Gw2. People refuse to party with me in WvW. And i must admit the heals aren’t particularly that great when a thief can oneshot backstab you.

Run with a more organized group for wvw – blasting water fields in out numbered situations (usually hammer train guardians wars and eles for water fields and cc mostly) like in a 15vs 20 fight is why the 15 can win.

as for dungeons – well what do you expect? at this point we need new content. roles won’t change anything. us vets have everything so well memorized that the most efficient means of doing dungeons for the 500th time is full offense and no defense because we don’t want to waste time.

You can do a support build, I’ve guildies that have done it with ele or guard. Just go to that sort of group. You need other group members with toughness gear to make the healing worth while.

Mhmm i’ve tried but there never seemed to be enough heals to keep my ally alive.

because you’re (probably) trying to keep glass cannons alive (that are also probably bad if they need the healing). The options are there. If you run a non zerk group.

Also, people move out of the fields after i put down the field when i try to heal them, hence i wouldn’t say a water field ele heal build would be VIABLE

This is an advanced game. Like I said. Go with more organized people or well, play another game. I like this game because it highly rewards organized and skilled play.

most of your points are just bs. ele blasting a water fields is a crap ton of healing for instance. guardian with above build can heal himself from 0 to full. I dunno what more heal you want.

you can stack on some fights and most fights you don’t need to. stacking is an old thing from fgs. most groups just still mindlessly follow it. Truth is positioning is often more important.

Also they’ve attempted harder content like arah, ta, and such and look how often people do that. Look how often people even do hotw.

List of Balance Problems

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Mightybird.6034

Mightybird.6034

Initially had this labeled as “Why QQ threads annoy me” kind of title but then thought of maybe a more constructive bent. This thread will be long :P It is meant for new players to get an understanding and for old players to add to.

First off quick preface, played since the beginning, played all classes., working on my 9th 80.

So every class has its issues. And critiques I get. But it really annoys me when I see a post saying their class is the worst, always has been, no one understands how bad it is…etc. Crying for crying’s sake doesn’t do any good.

So lets compile a (semi) concise list of problems rather than just saying X class sucks Buff X class. Because that could mean a whole lot of things as well as compare the classes relative to the other classes and where they lack.

Thieves and elementalists lack build diversity and have very underwhelming elites except for specific circumstances (both have elite options rather underwhelming in pve both are pigeon holed into pretty specific builds in pvp)

Necromancers and rangers are not a part of (most) metas and generally lack advanced options and builds for vet players (especially lacking in decent dungeon-fractal options which is concerning for upcoming HoT) I think its a lack of advanced build options more than anything for these classes than any raw numerical disadvantage that leads to a perception of undesirability. One thing to note for any new players reading this is that necros have always had a place in WvW as artillery.

Warrior and engineer are tricky double edged swords in terms of balance. They sort of gained power but also lost some power with the last big update. With the damage increase in pvp and the loss of the ability to cherry pick traits these two got hit the hardest I think when comparing the total/relative power shifts. Without careful attention they will fall out of general use pretty quickly in PvP. Warrior should always be safe in PvE for banners but engi was already shaky there.

Mesmer and guardian are in probably the best positions. For both variety and power in all modes. I think mesmer will become part of the pvp meta if not overly nerfed. Guardian maybe lacks a little in build diversity but still has more than some classes (having at least two viable builds in pvp – medi and bunker.) Both now bring exceptional utility for PvE groups with quickness, slow, reflects, and the new slow for mes, etc.

So that is my general summary…not sure how much I like it or how complete it is, but my idea was to start something like this with more input along these lines. Like if necro is lacking why is it lacking? What would it take to get it to become part of the PvE meta dungeon runs? You can’t simply jack up DPS numbers then you run the risk of them becoming OP in PvP.

If your class is sooooo underpowered and weak and x class is soooo OP… then…play x class? what’s stopping you? I don’t get it. I have 7 profs I play. Its not like PvP requires ascended gear/500 crafting/tons of investment/etc. If x prof is so great go play it and stop whining!

People act like they were born a warrior or necromancer or mesmer….its a game peeeps. You can play different characters…not only is it fun but it makes you better in pvp.

And yeah. The game is more balanced than not. I won’t defend all anets decisions, but overall its better than it was at release. If the game feels stale and bad then its probably because you need to move on from the game. You can’t play a single MMO forever.

Help. Returning player.

I’ve been getting into skin collecting lately. I never used to be that type of player. But now I like a theme and a look for each of my characters and am very particular about it. There are A LOT of skins to grind for. Like thousands of hours worth probably. I’ve played 800 and barely scratched it.

To start I recommend getting the bioluminescent armor from silverwastes. Its fun, you get gold while doing it, and takes quite awhile. You also get a free ascended chest piece.

Also don’t automatically wave off gems. Saving up gold to convert to gems isn’t as hard as I thought it’d be. (to get that one cosmetic that completes your look)

PS I also recommend you get each class, or nearly each class to 80. It took me 7 tries (professions) to find my main. What I thought I liked wasn’t… I also thought I didn’t like PvP but now I love it once I figured it out…

what if we do a Captain America thing with guardian and make the shield offensive? like a thrown kind of thing? damage/knockback/daze/retal/might/??/etc

What's the most expensive thing you've found?

Nothing more than 3-5ish gold. Played ~800ish hours since release.
