Zodical Armors : Lore breaking content

If this breaks the lore, then I suppose about anything magical break the lore. Especially Twilight, Sunrise and Eternity, which have very similar effects and has been there from the start… oh wait..

That it would look weird or that it would be fetishy or that it would show your curves I could take as valid arguments.
But quite a bit of GW, especially GW Factions were about celestial bodies and now they’ve created a material / spell that can put an effect mimicing a celestial body into a material and put it on an armor.

Taking a survey about an experience at a Disney World vacation doesn’t usually end up with you getting a free ticket to Disney World, though.

I’ve taken a survey IN Disney World in which I got a free meal. “Paying” people for the completion of a survey (their time) is not unprecedented. In fact, there are entire web sites and companies built around this premise.

It’s not “entitlement”. It’s the fact that some people were given an advantage in the game while others had no chance to get it.

What advantage did they get over other players? $5? A Quaggan backpack? 22gold? I’d hardly consider that an advantage over other players.

It’s entitlement, pure and simple.

What advantage is there in giving the runners 20 meters headstart in my example?
It’s just 20 meters. I’d hardly consider that an advantage over other runners.

It’s not entitlement, pure and simple.

geeze the entitlement…

Perhaps Anet is looking for a group of people based on specific criteria. For example, if all you use is Tide detergent, why in the world do you think someone would send you a survey asking what you think about Gain detergent?

Here’s another example: if you’ve never been to Disney World, why should you receive a survey (and compensation for taking the survey) about your experience during a Disney World vacation?

It’s not “entitlement”. It’s the fact that some people were given an advantage in the game while others had no chance to get it.

Nobody is complaining about not receiving the actual survey. It’s the reward from it that’s the problem.
I mean.. imagine if the summer olympics handed out surveys to a few selected runners. If they completed the survey they would get to start 20 meters ahead of the other runners in a 100 meter dash.

I think it’s apparent that Anet has made serious attempts to design this event to promote non-zerg play.

- The achievements encourage varied, non-zerg play. Triple Play and Group Effort are awarded only if the entire zone is played with strategy. Each area needs groups of people defending escorts and accomplishing events.
- As the map as a whole succeeds, the higher the number of evacuees, and the higher the rewards.

It’s individual selfish play that hampers the event, not the design of the event. Anet learned from the Scarlet Invasions from zergs just farming til failure. In Escape from LA, farming til fail is less rewarding than smart zone-wide play and citizen saving.

They have made an attempt, sure.
But that doesn’t change the fact that there is no direct encouragement for helping citizens. All you see is a number rise, you don’t get anything direct from it.

When you zerg, you scale events up which means you get more loot bags from the mobs. With these you can buy obsi shards, levels, and “rare” crafting ingredients and stuff.
You also get blades, which are shiny and you get chances for semi-expensive quaggan tonics and other random loot.

It’s quite obvious that people would choose to zerg instead of helping citizen.

This.
Sad but true.

Give a direct incentive to rescue citizens. Not an indirect invisible one that people don’t know or don’t care about.
The same problem existed in the invasions.

I will have to agree.
If the survey gave no gems, or if the survey was accessible by everyone who found it, then I would be all game.
But when you choose a group of people and give them 400 gems, that’s a bit unfair.

@ foofad

The cuffs are clearly in the end of the fabric, magic or not. The same for the collar.

Again, you can’t use the implementation as an argument. See the counterargument about the armor layer armor that makes you completely nude with private parts.

Yes, you are right about the underwear.

Yes, GW2 is full of magic. However if the skin was translucent you would see the intestines. If those were translucent as well, you would see right through the character. AND if that would be the case, you would still not “show skin” since there is no skin to show.

So now you’ve changed to trying the “enchantment” idea.
Well if you cover the whole body in an “enchantment” then that is not the skin but magic showing.
Since the “enchantment” obviously is contained in other parts of the armor as well and is contained only in the areas you have armor on (remove helmet = no blue face), it’s contained in a certain place and thus works just like fabric or steel or whatever you like to compare it to.
Magical or not, it’s an armor that covers your whole body.
Deal with it.

And arguing over the implementation does not help.

This armor would look no different (aside from color) if it had been designed from Jade instead of Zodiac.

All it is, is full body armor crafted out of one type of material, with other types of material used to provide accents. This whole “flesh” nonsense is just ridiculous.

I’ve posted the logical and physical reasons why it couldn’t be. I’ve even posted the textures to prove it isn’t. Your counter is “it’s a skinsuit because I said so.”

Okay.

Actually, No. In one of my earlier posts, I specifically mentioned all the logical reasons why the blue could not be flesh. You, on the other hand, have yet to even bother to address the question posed about the shoulders and helmet fins that share the same Zodiac coloring.

How is THIS part of her flesh? That image quite clearly shows that the Zodiac material extends out and away from her actual body.

I didn’t answer it because it’s absurd. No one said the shoulders were flesh. We’re talking about the skin, not the armor itself. Of course the fins aren’t flesh. Why are you even bringing it up? It has absolutely nothing to do with anything anyone has said.

Do I need to draw a picture? Here you go.

Because NONE of it is flesh. That’s why all the blue areas look the same, regardless of body location. All of the blue areas are crafted from Zodiac, none of the areas are actual flesh.

Ignoring how silly that is for a moment, if it’s crafted from a presumably nonporus armor-like material, why is it that the helmets completely obscure the face leaving absolutely no holes for breathing, much less seeing?

Other than the obvious “it’s not some sort of covering material at all but rather simply turns your flesh transparent.”

What you showed was not that the armor is skin.
What you showed -was- that it was implemented using the skin layer of the character and making part of that invisible and adding effects “behind” it.

How the armor is implemented in the game does not matter in any way at all. In that case you can just argue that “it’s all just 1s and 0s and nobody can get offended by anything even if it’s showing a completely nude body with all private parts because it’s done in the armor layer”.

Now what the armor actually -is- ingame is what actually counts.

  1. Remove the gloves and you see an edge of the suit with another kind of fabric at the end.
  2. Remove the helmet and you have a clear collar that marks the end of the suit.
  3. There are no protruding nipples, there’s merely a smooth bump. Look at any female breast and you will quite clearly see an actual protruding nipple and not a smooth bump.
  4. When the armor breaks, your character quite obviously has underwear under it that is not shown with the armor on. Hence the armor must be on top of the underwear, which in turn is on top of the skin. Hence the armor is on top of the skin.
  5. Did I mention my skin is not blue and not starry and will never be? I’m a human, my skin is skin-colored.

No matter how they implemented it and what layer they used, it’s an armor, not a skin.
Saying that it is a skin creates numerous of logical fallacies as described above.
Can you stop discussing this quite obvious subject now?
It is fairly obvious that the armor is not a skin no matter how hard you try.

If other people make summaries, they may be biased in a way that favors their opinion and that isn’t desireable. The reason most people post here is to get their idea published. It would then be in their interest to gain favor for it.
It would be in Chris’ interest to gather the essence of it and to show what people really think. As such it is Chris who is the most fitting to make the summaries.
Yes it is extra work, but they would be unbiased.

Not saying that no posters could make unbiased posts. But the one reading the summary would not be sure if it’s biased or not unless the poster of the summary has an interest in being unbiased and the reader knows that.

The armor is the most unique and most fitting armor for the gem store so far. ANet, you’re really showing signs that you’re improving with this patch. Very nice work.
I do enjoy the latexy look of the armor quite a bit, there’s not much of that in the game. It’s arguable if there -should- be much of it. But in this case I think it works quite well since it seems to play on the theme with the celestials from Cantha.

When you hit best in slot, anything after that is for entertainment value.
And alot of that involves getting money for skins, legendaries, toys, more skins, more legendaries. Basically after BiS almost everything is about money.

I can sell orichalcum for money, so that’s a very bad example.
And yes, gold is the must-have currency and being able to sell 20 slot bags could indeed help. I’m not sure if that’s a good idea since it may easilly crush the price of 20-slot bags and make all other bags at all worthless to craft.

A better idea would be to actually balance the monetary and sellable loot rewards to actually fit the time it takes to do the fractals.

Frostgorge is a huge money generator and it has 0 difficulty.
Fractals, while easy if done right, has a very high difficulty in comparison, but gives you no actual value for your time.
ANet urges people to go to Frostgorge if they want money instead of doing the endgame content with actual difficulty and that’s quite wrong.

Higher skill requirement and higher time requirement should give more rewards.
Lesser skill requirement and lesser time requirement should give less rewards.
That should be the case even if you have BiS.
Furthermore the only BiS gear you get from fractals uniquely is a backslot, rings and bags.
But if you want ascended armor or weapons you better save up money and craft them.
If you want a legendary, sure the obsidian may help but after that there’s no reason to go fractals.
You can’t get ascended “earrings” or amulets from fractals. You gotta do achievements and guild missions for them.

I’m not against spreading the ways you get BiS gear around the entire game.
But I am against having miniscule rewards giving you no reason to do hard content.
The same goes for the Wurm.
“Wow, i got 3 green items and 3 champion bags for killing the wurm. I’m so happy…”
The kill was nice to get, sure, but now there’s no reason to return. Got my achievements, got my kill and the unique items aren’t my style.
If it was rewarding to do it, people would put much more effort into beating it and helping others to beat it.

I believe that Fractals are not as rewarding as dungeon paths. In that case I suggest adding an additional daily reward chest for each successul fractal with lesser rewards:
- 50 s which would be 2g in total for each tier, 1-10, 11-20 etc, instead of 1g after all 4 Fractals.

Which Dungeon gives you a shot at direct ascended gear drops? Which Dungeon has 20 slot bags at its vendor? Do we really have to make a comparison of core, lodestone, and exotic armor drop rates between dungeons and Fractals? Does everything have to be the same to be worth doing?

Fractals have been anointed by the Devs as THE 5-man activity for several best-in-slot rewards including bags. Its probably not crucial that they also yield masses of coin . I really think the intent was for Fractals to be the home of apex predators who had moved beyond chasing after gold.

So when you have max size inventory and both ascended rings and any fractal weapon you might like.
Then what is the point of doing fractals?
When you have the unique drops, it’s one of the worst palces to farm. And you can’t sell the unique drops.
Even so it’s supposed to be “endgame content” which normally is the hardest and most rewarding place in a game.
Still normal dungeons and frostgorge champion farm give you much more value for your time.
If you can’t agree that something’s off there, then you better have a good argument for it.

If it’s made into an on/off option, sure. But there are reasons to keep it as it is for some people. I for one usually move with my skill ready to cast, following the target and when it goes green I cast it.
But I totally see a use for this system as well.
So if it’s an on/off feature, then sure, why not. It can’t hurt and it should be pretty easy to implement.

There should be no rebuilding of the place. There should be a big hole which scarlet has made with her drill, into which you can delve to find the dwarves and destroyers.
Destroyers would crawl out of the hole, making the area around it hostile and impossible to live in.
There may be another city built and it may be called Lion’s Arch, but not there and not now.

I have a bit of an out-of-the-box idea for an addition to fractals.

Summary:
Allows ANet to save content ingame almost as easilly as copypasting it.
Allows players to play through storywise “lost” content.
Fractals is the perfect place to “freeze” historical moments in time.
ANet most likely have everything they’ve done saved in an archive anyways.
New players get to see what old players did, although from a slightly different perspecitve.
A way to reintroduce items that are no longer being generated ingame, but still keep their rarity.

So how to do this?

Add NPCs that you can talk to in order to get a “chapter” selecting screen.
When a chapter is selected, the party is transported to an instance of that place.
The chapters basically are different parts of the history.

  • Old living story content.
  • Old GW1 historical moments remade.
  • Old places that have been lost, for example Lion’s Arch pre-scarlet.
Basically interesting places storywise and lorewise saved in time.
Once there, depending on what content it originally was, you get missions to do.
This could be on the form of Underworld in GW1 where you just explore and find quests to do.
It could be general dungeon missions.
For example the “colonization” of southsun with the karka queen could be a historical fractal.
Underworld-style, it would give you quests as you talk to the NPCs. One quest is to clear the jungle and put out the waypoints towards the south.
Another is to follow the othe NPC.
When some quests are done, you get to do other quests and finally you get to fight the karka queen when you’re done.
Just like underworld, a failed quest means that you’re out since that’s not how the original story went.
This is the “storybook” that GW2 needs to update people with the story and lore.

As opposed to the normal “unstable” fractals, these are stable fractals, showing the actual history as it happened.
The new NPCs are scholars that are studying fractals of the mists, discovering those historical fractals with the help of Dessa. While Dessa only exists temporarily each time you enter the fractals, these scholars come from the outside world and gather new information from Dessa each time they enter and, unlike Dessa, can remember it all and utillize it to find new fractals.
Like Kiel, you enter with them and they convince Dessa to change fractal coordinates to the history you have chosen to explore.

As opposed to the unstable fractal difficulty level, the best would probably be to have a story mode and an explorable mode to cater for both casual players who want the lore and hardcore players who want the rewards.
Story mode is easy and you don’t have to worry too much about difficulty as you learn about the lore. Although you don’t get much rewards for it other than lore.
Explorable mode is harder than any current dungeon, it’s endgame content. Although it also gives nice rewards.
The level system is too advanced and unnecessary for this.

As with all dungeons, time is a main “risk” here. If you fail the fractal history, you don’t get your end reward and you got to do it again in order to get the reward. However on top of this, like with Underworld in GW1, there could be a cost to enter. After all it takes alot of finances for the scholars to study the fractals. Normal unstable fractals remain free of course.
The rewards for story mode should be small, as stated before.
The rewards for explorable mode should be high but balanced.
Very rare chances to get actual rewards you got from the original content, like recipes, monocles and whatnot and “ticket scraps” to sooner or later buy those rewards from the scholars if you don’t get a drop. It should require many ticket scraps to keep the rarity of the items, but it should still be possible to get them if you just work for them.
Maybe not so much gold rewards, but like Underworld, high loot rewards on success and chances for unique items.
That said, the original content is slightly rebalanced to work for 5 players even if it originally was made for zergs.

Good job, Kiel voters. Good job.
So much for cheaper waypoints.

Evon wouldn’t of done anything different for three reasons.

One there has to be a reason for us to get involved, if he had Lion’s Arch well defended there be no need for us to be there.

Secondary the Captain’s Council is in charge of Lion’s Arch, which means all or the majority of captains must be in agreement. If this wasn’t the case the Lionsguard would probably be constructing additional defenses as well as holding recruitment drives.

Lastly why use his own resources to defend a town that’s nothing to him except being the current headquarters of his store? He can relocate it to the Black Citadel if he wanted, or any city for that matter, as trade will still flow. Of course it will be longer for supplies to be delivered since the Asura portals will be destroyed, but as he is an enterprising Charr he probably recruit some Gladium to hire out as caravan guards in between Lionsguard havens.

You’re missing all of the points.
1. Involvement: We are still involved. The war will still be, just very much tilted to our favor.

2. Here is where Evon uses his physical and financial power. Evon first and foremost is a charr. Quite alot of convincing power just in that. Try say no to a charr that’s hunched over you, breathing in your face. Secondly, if there still was a no, he can just say “Get the reinforcements or I’ll shut down the entire trade in Lion’s Arch”, which would force them to agree with him or Lion’s Arch would be set back alot economically.

3. Read 2. Nobody said he would pay anything. Furthermore, the asura gates will not be destroyed, simply just relocated to Vigil Keep.

Are we going down this path again Gidorah?

Chris

It would honestly be very timely and useful for both ANet and the players to go down just that path, although with a tone of respect.
Because he does have a very valid point.
It annoys players and it gives you a very bad image that you completely ignore replying at all with any substantial post to any of the threads about the subject. All that has been replied is “go here and discuss it instead” or “we’re locking this thread because it’s inflammatory”.
Therefore it would be very nice to have a CDI about the interaction between ANet and the players. It would also be very nice to have a CDI about the BLT.

Because both of these topics are very fresh at the moment and they are very much in both yours and the players’ interests.
I believe that I can talk for all of the players in this subject saying that you keep quiet way too much. We want you to talk about stuff and talk with us about stuff.

Personally I love the EverQuest Next Landmark team for that.
At the start of Landmark, they had a pretty unfortunate and severe problem that caused the first wipe and they went into very much detail and explained to the players exactly what the problem was and how they solved it. That earns them alot of confidence and trust and sympathy from the players and gives the players an understanding of why things are like they are.
I wish ANet would be as open. It would give you the same amount of trust and sympathy. CDI is a nice step, but it’s not enough.

About Cantha being xenophobic.
Yes they were, but the Zephyr Sanctum has been to Cantha and have traded with them numerous times.
The Zephyr Sanctum and the structures in Labyrinthine Cliffs are also influenced by the architecture in Kaineng City.
But the main point… Zephyrites were from the start mainly only carrying humans from Cantha and Elona. But later on they have taken aboard all races, no?
If that’s the case, then that would be a sign that Cantha would be less xenophobic and more open nowadays since the Zephyrites are allowed to trade with them.

Mikuchan.7261

Lion’s Arch is a really well defended place… story-wise. It could withstand a blockade and siege from the full fleet of Kryta. It could withstand a large scale attack by the risen navy.
Later on, inside the game, it has stood up against an attack by a dragon champion. It has stood against an army of karka, of which one was huge and very heavilly armored.
What’s surprising is that the Aetherblades could build their base inside of LA. I guess they must have used portal tech to get past the defenses.

But that said.
There’s nothing that says that Lion’s Arch is Scarlet’s main goal.
Her army would be well more than enough to wipe out Lion’s Arch, quite possibly even Divinity’s Reach.
She has a large fleet of airships, a large flying object with an attachment point for various stuff it seems. She has an infinitely reconstructable army of robots. The toxin that quite possibly can wipe out a whole city.

Logically, Scarlet is after something else that haunts her dreams and speaks in her head and Lion’s Arch is sitting on top of that something else. Hence the drill. Hence the huge army. Hence the airships. Hence the sonic probes. Hence the green probe in Lion’s Arch. It has found what the other probes have not.
The easiest way to get to that something else is through Lion’s Arch, with a drill. So that’s what’s she’s going to do.

Personally I see no problem doing this in an overflow. In any other game, this would be instanced or without a small population cap and scaling.
It’s pretty much a design flaw to put such a hard event in open world when they clearly don’t account for random people and people not on TS.
But I do think it’s wrong to say that a certain server killed it unless you do it 100% as an open world event. That is, without teamspeak, organizing just ingame and on a mainserver.
But I don’t care too much about it. I was there, I was part of it, I killed the dam thing, I’m happy about it.
But yeah… I also scored much more loot from hide and seek in the meantime, haha.
A bit sad that the single hardest thing you can do ingame, with a very high failure rate, gives much much less loot than the easiest farming you can do, in frostgorge in the same time as it takes to succeed the wurm, not accounting for failures.
Never the less, first legit kill for gw2community.com and me. I’m happy.
The video is quite awesome too.

That said, a dev commented in another thread that they are indeed working on better ways to introduce hardcore content. We’ll see what happens.

Never even saw them before because I didn’t know the name of them but wow they’re expensive.
I agree, those are not vanity items and they should be much more available. It’s not fair the way it is and it definitely doesn’t help in giving more diversity to builds.
That they drop from temporary content doesn’t help in any way.

Would be nice if someone could link a quote of the dev in the OPs statement.
I have a hard time thinking they would say something like that, but if they did… It could turn out quite juicy.

'Balance tweak' on the Wurm?

in The Origins of Madness

Posted by: Mikuchan.7261

Mikuchan.7261

A “balance tweak” means that they have tried to further “balance” the fight.
If that means that they have made it harder or easier can’t be said.
However it would be logical if they had made it easier since it seems that no team has killed it “legitimately” so far.

Edit: However I agree that ANet should say what’s happening. Now basically we’re at square one. The “balance fix” could mean that no tactic work anymore as far as we know. However that’s hopefully not the case.

Lions Arch has personal story quests inside it:
- The starting location (green marker)
- Some personal stories take place inside Lions Arch, they’d have to remake the personal stories.

Hence Lions Arch will not be destroyed in any large scale or meaningful way.

ANet has called that “anything is fair game” and “anything can be destroyed”.
They have some 350 employees and guestimatingly about 80 working on living story. There is a -huge- room for rewriting the entire personal story if needed.

Now I’m not sure they would do it…
But if they really want to show us something spectacular, then that’s what’s happening.

Hope you get your refund.

I will, it has been confirmed by mods several times that those not satisfied will get a refund, but thanks ^^

@Mikuchan,
maybe because we are picketing the wrong sidewalk? Maybe it isn’t ANet we need to shake up, but NCSoft instead.

Regardless of who stands behind the decisions, ANet has the answers though.

It would be nice to get a reply from the devs, but I guess the earliest possible time for that is monday? They had tuesday to friday last week though. Kinda disappointed they haven’t said anything other than that the last thread was “inflammatory” and locking it.

Great Jungle Wurm is way too hard

Basically what Nokaru said.
There are useful guests and destructive guests and after they announced their kills, Desolation got a lot of destructive guests. Especially so now during the weekend.
While most go on TS and listen, way too many don’t.
And then it’s completely impossible to kill the wurm.

You need guestimatingly 95% of the people to do exactly right and follow the commands.
You need almost all of the people on the map to contribute or you won’t have enough dps.
If just one guardian uses hammer, the light fields can destroy the dps since you can’t blast the fire fields for that very needed DPS.
The same if someone else throws random fields on the boss.
Warriors that place banners in the zerg stop people from picking up elementalist conjured weapons.
Necromancers need to use epidemic on the fear that warriors and other necromancers has provided.

Everything must go together or it will fail.
That’s not pug-friendly content and should not be done in open world where pugs are the only thing you get.
Bottom line, it’s way too hard and requires outside-of-guildwars communication that pugs will not all use.

That said..
I wonder what happens after the bugs are patched out.
We won’t get the very needed double damage spot, but we won’t get bugged scaling either, if everything works.
Can go either way really..

Headline

Short summary (a.k.a. TL;DR)
This is an example of what a structured post could look like.
It is easy to navigate and you can see what the person is arguing about directly without reading it.
The post is visually short and easy to look at and easy to skip looking at.
Then if you’re interested you can expand it and look at what the person is talking about.

You can also combine it with Malchior’s type of writing so that here in the short summary you can write that:
As a <role>, I want <goal/desire> so that <benefit>
And then expand on it in the spoiler tags.

And you write about the first topic here.

And the second topic goes here.

And so on.

I see “TL;DR” as this:

TL;DR:
This is what I want.

Long version:
This is what I want and why I want it.

A TL;DR doesn’t really replace a long version that explains things in detail.
It’s just a short summary without much detail at all.
You can catch the reader’s attention and make them interested in reading the long version that explains what it’s all about.
But yes, it should absolutely be on top, not on bottom.
