What you’re asking for OP, is not reasonable. The idea of a megaserver is to control the population. Giving a people a choice to not be a part of a solution to several problems in the game is not really an option.

Some changes are made for the good of the game whether individual players like those changes or not. Allowing them to opt out of something that’s good for the game isn’t really an option.

The amount of servers that Anet now spawns and maintains to maintain the entire population takes server processor power. The more servers, the more the whole system has to handle. By using something like the megaserver system, less servers over all will be spawned.

That means that the system will run more smoothly (in theory anyway).

But people who say they don’t like the new system have never tried the new system in the first place. My prediction is is that most people will adjust to it and enjoy it.

Bottom line is, it’s not reasonable for Anet to make changes to the game on this level and still maintain the old system, because it would defeat at least part of the purpose for the change.

And yet the system we have now has been put in place by them and sustained for almost 2 years.

Don’t tell me it is good for the game.

The mega server is not something I have ever seen people asking for.
Underflows yes (and like overflows you can still be in your map server)

It is not reasonable fostering server identities for 2 years and then taking that away for the sake of what?
Even the name megaserver makes me shudder.

edit: btw not a single person I have spoken to on my server likes it- they all feel it is a very bad mistake.

What if I want to play with the people from my homeserver only, though? There are a lot of people I know, who aren’t on my friendslist, who aren’t in my guild, yet have the same interests as me. Will I just have to be lucky to be put in the same world as them? Will I have to deal with people from other servers I quite literally couldn’t care less about?
I’m not trying to be the partypooper here, and I’ll wait for more updates and until I’ve seen it in action, but this could very well mean the end of roleplaying in Guild Wars 2, and thus, the end for a lot of players.

I do hope servers will remain to work as they do now; people from your server getting absolute priority to be in the same world, and I also hope cities, at least, will stay out of this. We don’t need trolls in our RP.

Edit: And I know that roleplayers make up a tiny portion of the playerbase, hence my asking instead of me stating that we’re being beeped over. Again, waiting until we get more info. It’s just the the first impression scares me.

I love my home server, I already run into the same people all over the world- that is why they are on my friends list in the first place.
I have come to love some players even though they are not on my list because I see them so often.

All this does is create one big mishmash, it destroys server identity completely. Make no mistake servers do have different identities.

I have no desire for some mega server to decide where to put me- just for the sake of having more random people on whichever map I happen to be on.

yes – extremely well played. using bad comments as a strawman argument against the cause itself. you do realize both sides have made the same ridiculous claims?
the whole discussion about how many players want something or not is, as always, futile and should simply be ignored instead of derailing the thread even further with your clever (I’m sure you think so at least) remarks to stroke your ego.

fact is, it’s a feature some people want and others never want to come in contact with. precautions need to be taken for the latter group not to be disturbed, if the feature is ever added. but if those are taken, there’s no rational reason to be against adding this feature except for wanting the devs to spend time on things someone personally wants more, which of course is a good argument, as the devs have to see what their target audience wants.

and on a sidenote: pvp arenas never were a decent alternative to a dueling because:

• possibility of getting disrupted or having to pay for a private arena
• wvw/pve players would not be able to use their builds/gear to duel with
• changing maps is necessary, while this feature would be very useful when having to wait ON a map

I understand that dueling is a feature that some people would love and I am also sure that there are people who would use it for the purposes you state and not abuse it.

I am also 100% sure that there are many many players who will use it to grief others.

You only have to look at any of the many dueling threads to see the attitude of so called pro duelers- seems to me they do not understand the term duel and substitute it for gank.

So it is not really a great mystery that many people are against it.

I have always suggested that we get arenas that is open in all the major cities- we can have stands and people can watch- heck they can even bet on their favorite “gladiators” and have leader boards.
That imo would add to the game- it would be great fun.
it would also be something that all players can enjoy

I do not however think that dueling belongs in the open world

You can argue the fine points of the game, of what it’s lacking and what it needs to do all you want, but when it comes time to just enjoy something for pure fun and entertainment, ANet knows how to poke fun and laugh for the sake of laughing. If you are talking bout Game of Thrones- you do need to watch season 1- season 2 will make no sense if you don’t (imo- it also was a lot weaker, picked up in season 3 though)

If you are talking about Living World season 1- no
you can play season 2 any time- it will take you about 5 min to catch up.
Season 1 was a lot of fun and made for an epic year imo- but it won’t hurt you that you missed it.

Also a video game is not a TV series based on books- you can’t really compare the mediums involved

• option to decline all duels (default)
• inviting the same person not more than once every 30 seconds
• harassment-reporting option (which currently only works via email)

apart from that, I’d really like something to do while waiting around for large scale events like tequatl or great jungle wurm. maybe the feature pack patch will solve some of these problems, but right now I’m standing around for over an hour for each wurmtry and about 30-45 minutes for tequatl. if I could do something during that time whithout leaving the map, I’d be glad. duelling would certainly be a good way to fight the endless boredom.
I think it’s very shortsighted to say dueling has no place in pve. in fact, it’s just the opposite. dueling only really works if people are not enemies already (like in wvw) and both have to decide they want to duel. only then can it ever work as a friendly match.

but that is why we have costume brawl

never mind the boxes of fun, tonics, toys and naked dance parties.

at least that is what we do waiting around for events

So I was talking with a friend earlier this morning after a CoE run. Bouncing around the camp West of the dungeon, we spoke of a topic that keeps appearing in many of my chats with fellow gamers. So as to cut to the chase, Dear Anet could you please put a /duel function into the game!!? It is one of the major things I find lacking in Gw2, you have so many beautiful zones and I personally feel for one it would be fun to kick the crap out of a friend in said zones. Going to Spvp is just not the same. If you guys could please put dueling into the game I’m sure many players would be grateful, thank you =-)

That is really interesting because in all the time I have played since betas I have never had a conversation in game about dueling.

As for the Pale Tree- it would make absolutely no sense to make that look available as she is a unique being- she is not even a Sylvari as we understand the term.

I am on Gunnar’s and while we are not crowded exactly we have a pretty nice PvE community and it is a very laid back server.

I have several friends on Aurora Glade and they also seem to have a great time- Aurora sounds a bit more organised in their community but also fairly chill.

Stay away from Desolation- my friends who live there haven’t been able to play there for months and want to transfer off.

If you don’t even know what has been debunked and how, then I don’t think you can make that claim. But by all means, carry on.

I follow the forums of course so I am fairly aware of the various arguments- but I tend to take all the speculation with a sack of salt and only go by what I have seen for myself in the game.

That should satisfy your “put points into things” fix.

Play a Mesmer sometime and then come back and tell me what you think of no traits until 30 and no grandmaster traits until 80.

Further, your suggestion would not punish the players who were downed or defeated, it would punish the the players reviving them. What that would encourage is ignoring the downed. Maybe you think that that would be a great idea, but I do not.

Also it is sometimes crucial to get downed players up as fast as possible- failure or success depends on it.
Dead people should way point- end of story.
