I feel like quitting the game due to Ascended Gear

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I’m still playing, but the same can’t be said for 90% of my guild, which quit as soon as the Ascended grind was introduced. They are all waiting for the impending release of another MMO that has full loot and is an unrestricted sandbox.

I’m still here, but for the most part I find myself running solo in WvW hoping to find small fights.

I have to admit, that the recent turn of events has sucked the enthusiasm I once had for the game from me. Since the game is free I’ll keep logging in, but have no intention of ever spending another penny at the gem store.

But I’m trying, Ringo. I’m trying real hard to be the shepherd.

Nope, bad idea because it would not work. AOE would hit everyone around you unless you were all in a party all the time and that just don’t happen with events. So – that would mean no events which is a cornerstone of PvE.

WvW is open world PvP.

Oh and ‘open world pvp = non consensual pvp = I just wanna PK noobs’

AoE could be limited to people not in party, and would have to be used judiciously in other settings. It has been done in other games.

Your gaming background? Love/hate GW2?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: MrSilver.5269

MrSilver.5269

My gaming background goes all the way back to before table top pong. (My first games were oldschool pinball).

I’ve been playing games online since around ’99. I usually stick with one main game for years at a time. The longest played games of my gaming career being Shadowbane, Lineage II, WoW, LoTRo, Aion, and now GW2. Each of these games I played for at least one year if not longer.

My MMO background:

Acheron’s call
Anarchy Online
Shadowbane
Star Wars Galaxies
Lineage II
EvE
WOW
EQII
Guild Wars
Archlord
D&D Online
AoC
LoTRO
Aion
Darkfall
Rift
Tera
Guild Wars 2

Do I love or hate Guildwars 2?

I loved it until I found out about the introduction of vertical gear progression. I’ve played my share of gear grinds. Never again. I’d rather spend time IRL with family, or at the office than do something in a game that I dislike immensely, i.e., repeatedly running dungeons for RNG drops. I thought I would be playing GW2 for years, and possibly until the release of GW3 if that ever came out. I’m currently debating my gaming options, which very well may be an outright retirement from MMOs.

What I loved about GW2:

WvW large scale epic sieges. So much fun.

Small scale behind the lines roaming pvp.

World exploration.

Jumping puzzles (learned to love them)- GW2 needs more of them.

Tweaking my build.

What I hated about GW2:

Every single dungeon. So boring. I refuse to run things more than once or twice. After I’ve done a scripted fight and seen the dungeon there is no reason for me to ever see it again. I just can’t stand pve raids.

But I’m trying, Ringo. I’m trying real hard to be the shepherd.

Formal statement from ANet?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: MrSilver.5269

MrSilver.5269

Why should we (ArenaNet) care:

  • For starters while the population is made of players they are first and foremost consumers. They will play whatever they are content with and carry their buying power with them in that regards. If you alienate the majority or even a noticeable margin of your player base without any sort of formal answer you are effectively jeopardizing a majority or noticeable amount of your revenue. The best way for you (ArenaNet) to get the best RoI is by keeping your direction, planning, and ideas out in the open and very forthcoming to your consumers. The minute you (ArenaNet) treat consumers like cattle that can be corralled into any shape or fashion is the minute you’re likely to lose that valuable RoI.
  • Aside from losing consumers you’re damaging any future legacy your brand name might have. I am a Marketing & Brand Developer. I work in progressing my brand’s name and making sure that it’s outlook in the future is improved. By jeopardizing your brand’s image you are liable to lose any future chance of new consumers or old consumers giving you a second chance.
  • Potential lawsuits. I don’t advocate this, but let’s face it. The world today has become something of a frenzy in the courts. The issue is if you (ArenaNet) keep going down this road and direction without any regard to consumers you are putting yourself at risk. There are already precedents for virtual items that are owned by the company still being ruled in favor of the plaintiff (the player who lost said virtual property by whatever means). But more importantly, by putting out a manifesto, selling the product as such and along the lines of the manifesto puts you at an even greater risk. A number of states have what is known as Deceptive Trade & Practices Acts which you would do well to be wary of. Here are a few snippets from Texas’ said DTPA
  • The underlying purpose of this Act is to protect consumers against false, misleading, and deceptive business practices, unconscionable actions, and breaches of warranty and to provide efficient and economical procedures to secure such protection. This Act is intended to be liberally construed and applied. A consumer is defined as one who seeks or acquires by purchase or lease any goods or services.
  • Seller takes advantage of “consumers” lack of knowledge, ability, experience, or capacity to a grossly unfair degree.
  • Representing that goods or services are of a particular standard, quality or grade, or that goods are of a particular style or model, if they are of another.
  • Fitness: Good can do what the sales person said it would do.

Let me please re-iterate that I am not condoning or advocating this kind of response, however it would be naive to think that this type of stuff doesn’t happen. People make ridiculous claims all the time that jeopardize companies and make them question why they even stay open to do business with such issues.

Sum It Up:

All this is conjecture and way overboard. It is based on a pre-tense of what could happen if ArenaNet keeps going down this road. Which I believe is something the majority (even upset consumers) don’t think ArenaNet intended (or intends) to do. But the last couple of weeks on the forums and in the game have been a melee and a constant bickering (even I have contributed to that).

So again, can we PLEASE have a formal statement from ArenaNet, regardless of direction of decision?

TLDR: Invest in the time to read and understand rather than looking for the shortened Cliff’s notes version. If this is too much to ask, just move along, thanks!

I think I have over 400 hours, but I’m not sure as I wasn’t counting. I play almost everyday. And bought at a minimum of $50 worth in gems every month. And I bought my first $50 back in July during the last beta event. I haven’t bought anything this month though. So I spent over $250 if you include the game. ::sigh::

I think I have 3 or 4 pieces of level 80 exotic equipment, and that’s it. I don’t like to play one character all the time, although recently I’ve been doing a lot of farming to upgrade my gear.

I think my investment is about the same. ..

and my credit card won’t be used on this game again if I have to replace all the jewels I bought with gold obtained from converted gems on the false pretense that I would never ever have to do it again.

I have over 938 hours played in this game so far. I only know of 2 other people who have me beat. I’d say I’m a dedicated player. I’ve even spent money in the gem store. I consider myself a dedicated player. I haven’t played any other game since GW2 launched.

With that said, I think ascended gear is a huge mistake that will drive me away from the game if it continues. I have no desire to gear treadmill. Been there, done that, never want to repeat it again.

This, this, this.

I have 100% map completion, two sets of exotic gear for my main, just shy of 500 badges banked for gift of battle after already purchasing my exotic chest piece from badges, 49g banked, an inventory full of blueprints from jumping puzzles, every single inventory spot opened from gems, bank spots purchased, working on getting every dye for my main, and thousands upon thousands oh wvw kills.

I’m dedicated.

And I will never play FotM for ascended gear, and will leave the game if I don’t hear some details about alternative ways to obtain ascended through karma/wvw soon.

What blueprints from jumpig puzzles?

Legendaries used to be best in slot ALONG WITH EXOTICS before this patch. These “drama queens” seem to be far more knowledgable of the situation than you do.

Ascended items do not bridge any gap- there was no gap to bridge. They created a gap the same day they added the gap filler. THAT is the issue here. Ascended items are just the poster children for the problem- that new stats were added for no good reason and now people who had no intention of grinding out for their looks because they already had the best in slot (exotics) are now stuck in a choice of being left behind stat wise, or joining in the WoW style gear treadmill that Arenanet is trying to create.

So before raging, with tears in your eyes, about how no one here has done their homework, you would do well to research a little on your own.

There is no way to describe the issue clearer than this poster has.

I purchased this game because of the specific assurance that there would not be a gear grind, that the exotics were best in slot, and they would ALWAYS be best in slot. I purchased gems with irl $ to convert to gold under market value to get my exotic jewels because of this specific assurance. I elected to make my purchase with Arenanet because I wanted to support the company, rather than doing what so many others are doing: purchasing gold from gold sellers at a MUCH better value.

I won’t EVER make another gem purchase as a result, and I’m actively considering a new game.

I am not alone.

How many here are playing less? And why?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

MrSilver.5269

I am definitely less excited about logging in, because I simply dread the thought of having to grind more gear. I spent IRL money at the gem store to convert to gold to purchase my jewels on the promise that I would never have to do it again. 3 months later that I find that I was induced to spend my money by ANET money on false pretenses.

I feel like I was robbed, and it simply does not make me want to log in. I’m typing this post from the office on my day off, because I decided to go to work rather than logging in. Yes, I’m on the forums, but only because I wanted to voice my frustration. Not because I hate this game, but because the opposite.

But to answer the OP’s question, I’ll still be in game, but nowhere near the amount that I usually am. Once I get this feeling about a game, it usually results in a death spiral, and before long it is uninstalled.

The bottom line is that I was spoiled by a game called Shadowbane that had full-open world no restrictions asset destruction pvp, with easy leveling, and no gear treadmill. I’ve been chasing the horizon ever since to find another game that can match it.

I was hoping that GW2 would be a nice happy medium for an aging MMOer that just doesn’t have the time anymore to grind.

Starting to look like that was a pipe dream.

Such a bummer because I REALLY was in love with this game.

Why I'm never bothering with FotM again

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: MrSilver.5269

MrSilver.5269

I’ve been in the same guild since about 2006. We are a pvp-centric guild that does some pve as the game requires. Many of us are IRL friends. All of us have full-time jobs, families, lives. Needless to say, our time in game is precious.

After the first weekend there was already difficulty getting full guild groups to run FotM, because of the tier discrepancy. I can’t even imagine what it would be like to try to pug it.

I haven’t even been back to Lion’s Arch since the release of the patch as I have been spending my time split between 100% completion (I was hoping to some day get a legendary weapon), and WvW.

Now that I am well behind the curve of FoTM I just have no desire to play catch-up. I personally can’t stand pve and REALLY can’t stand pve when I HAVE to do it for competitiveness on the pvp side of things.

There is another game coming out that I was planning on skipping altogether. Guess it is time to take another look at it.

Such a bummer.

If you can survive a thieve’s initial burst chances are you will win the fight (if we are talking about the steal/C&D/BS 2xs dagger thief). My entire build now centers around crit and stun mitigation. Did my DPS take a hit… yup. But you can’t do damage if you are dead.

If they are having issues with generating revenue how about introducing a ton of new (and good) cosmetic skins that may be transmuted into your wearable gear and that may only be purchased with a new form of gem that can’t be traded for gold.

I know I would be more than willing to spend at least $10-15 per month on cosmetic improvements.

There is so much that could be done to improve the current items that are purchasable with gems.

For example:

30 slot bags
Weapon skins
Underwater armor skins
Customizable Titles
Designable Guild military-type uniforms beyond just an emblem.
Guild only Commander icons (i.e., can only be seen by other members of a guild)

I’d also be willing to go so far as to purchase a fully leveled and geared character. Let’s say for $150.00 you get a completed level 80 with your choice of soulbound level 80 exotic armor, weapon and trinkets. I know that that idea is probably more than most can stomach, but the point is, I am willing to spend irl money to buy in-game items if the in-game items were worth purchasing.

In any event, my point is that if revenue is the issue, please figure out a way to solve the problem without going against the manifesto.

Thanks for sharing the link. It has been reposted on my guild forums, and sums up my feelings perfectly.

I’m not interested in playing another game with a gear treadmill, and neither are most of the veteran players I know that migrated to GW2 because the game was built without one.

Gear Grind coming to WvW?

An official blog post I left two previous Realm vs Realm games when gear grinds necessary for PvP were introduced. I was hoping it wouldn’t happen to GW2, but I guess it’s the genre. They can’t avoid it. Though we’ll have to wait and see how bad it is.

If it is truly bad, this will probably be my last MMO.

EDIT: Actually, the blog says Ascended Rings come from the dungeon, back pieces from the Mystic Forge. Looks WvW’ers will have to grind dungeons.

So frustrated to hear about this.

I feel the same way. The MMO genre has been ruined by gear treadmills.

Fantastic post. I share the concerns articulated, and echo the sentiment. I’m one of the gamers that has been playing the mmo genre since the late 90s. I no longer have the time to play a game with a constantly evolving gear progression, and have migrated to GW2 primarily for the wvw content.

I was on the verge of retiring from mmos completely, but held out for GW2’s release. I love the game as it currently stands, and don’t need artificial treadmill content to keep my interest.

PLEASE reconsider your position on this issue ANET.

Voted that I will leave gw2 if a gear grind is introduced.

Ascended gear having better stats is a good thing.

Please lock this thread. It doesn’t add anything that already isn’t in the other huge thread, and to me looks like it may be a troll looking to create flames.

And one more onto the pile of people who do NOT want to see more powerful gear being introduced.

I’m not interested in anything that remotely resembles a gear grind. I don’t want to have to do pve content to be able to maintain competitiveness in wvw pvp.

Please rethink this ArenaNet

Thieves, how would you counter yourself?

Thanks for the responses… that pretty much just answered my question about whether I’d finish my thief.

My personal counter is ~20K health, ~2600 armor, instant AoE blind+ stealth and passive teleport on CC every minute.

I’m at 21K health and ~2,500 armor.

I can’t speak for other classes but the engineer has traits that allows you to survive the thief’s initial burst and get distance.

I’m not saying that I never die to a thief, but I played for 3+ hours last night in EBG and I did not die to any thief from a steal/C&D/backstab. Matter of fact, I almost never die to a thief anymore from a steal/C&D/backstab, and before my switch ~3/4s of my deaths were to thieves.

I’ve gotten my thief up to level 41 now, and probably won’t level it much further. That said, if I were to finish it I would not spec full glass cannon.

The one skill that I really have my eyes on is hard to catch. I’m not experienced enough with the thief to know if going that deep into acrobatics will completely kitten you.

For those of you with experience, how does an acrobatics build play out?
