Some of the PVE only skills tied to titles did provide a significant amount of power. They were easy mode approaches to powerful builds as top end builds without PVE only skills were capable of levels of performance at least comparable to PVE only builds.

You and I remember it quite differently. Lets agree to disagree, and let all these good folks get back to arguing about GW2, shall we?

I did give specific examples. Whatever your memory was of that, those skills existed and if you entered the meta game in PvE, you were expected to have them..and by many have them maxed out.

Anyone who played GW1 and has done things like DoA knows that Lightbringer levels were a requirement… but what I think he’s trying to tell you is that whatever happened in GW1 is irrelevant for GW2 and the manifesto and as a consequence for this discussion.

Now, I haven’t followed all posts here but is that relevant for this discussion?

GW1 did have grind but it had stuff I really wanted. GW2 has grind but for me it has no purpose so I don’t do it. I don’t mind grind always but the statement that they don’t want to make grindy games is a nice statement but I don’t think they managed to do it.

Most of the people who are complaining about grind are Guild Wars 1 veterans who claim there was no grind in Guild Wars 1. I’m saying same company, same game. It shifted from skills to gear, but there was still grind. It’s relevant because those who came from other MMOs, for the most part anyway, aren’t dying over this grind. Maybe they had time gating, which is another issue.

But the big discussion on this forums is that Anet lied to their core fans by having grind in the game, even though Guild Wars 1 that they loved had grind too.

This is a pattern over many threads, not just this one.

MMOs by definition are grind… doing a dungeon is grind… world completion is grind… I consider the boring and tedious Jormag fight small scale grind… Doing world events in general is grind… Champ trains is grind… Karma trains are grind… Legendaries are grind… High particle effect exotics are grind… ALL GRIND… GUESS WHAT?! Ascended is grind too! but you know what ALL of those things have in common? Including the new Ascended? NONE OF THEM are a requirement to progress or succeed in the game…

making consumables for wvw is a grind
making gold for buying consumables is a grind
getting to 80 is a grind
crafting is a grind
gathering is a grind

:) just thought id add

mmo’s in general are grinds.

You folks need to google what a treadmill is. Until they set precedence for repeatedly replacing the current-best tier there is no treadmill. Keyword here being repeatedly.

I can see ascended being outdone in 2016 after ascended armor finished the Ascended tier in 2014/15. And at that point someone could call it a (really slow) treadmill.

But for now, this one tread does not constitue a mill, and one tread (exotic -> ascended) is all we’ve had and will have for the forseeable future.

P.S. I’d quit if this turns treadmill – it just isnt one for now unless you want to go to extreme logic leaps to justify your conviction, or just like to complain.

Maybe it’s a treadmill, maybe it isn’t. To be honest, it doesn’t matter into what pigeon hole you want to put Ascended.

It most definitely is a timegated grind for gear that has higher stats. And I loved Guild Wars because Guild Wars didn’t have that.

And that’s what’s kitten ing people off. They bought this game expecting to not have to grind tier gear, and yet here it is.

Nobody that I’ve seen, prior to the announcement of Ascended gear last November, got on these forums, Reddit, or anywhere else and asked, “ArenaNet, can we please have tiers of gear to grind for in Guild Wars 2?”

Rather, people were glad to finally have a game without that garbage.

…and suddenly, without warning, tier gear grind got thrown into a game that didn’t have it when we bought it.

No people got on here and complained that there was nothing to do post 80 lol.

Will that same people continue complaining tomorrow when today they get their ascended weapons?

Will that same people continue complaining when they get their full ascended set before the end of the year?

Will those who got their legendaries now complain that their legendary was updated in stats so they AGAIN dont have anything to do?

That depends on Anet, the complaint that there was nothing to do didn’t have anything to do with gear specifically. your just making the assumption it does.

Anet needs to actually release some solid content along with ascended (not reliant on ascended) for people to have something to do. Grinding for gear is not really something to do. Its a goal to work towards yes, but there is much more value in designing new maps for exploration, new dungeons and things of that nature.

however Anet has gotten into this utterly kittened habit of short term content. That right there really kitten es me off more than the whole gear thing which im indifferent towards anyways.

Btw there is a huge difference between playing the game and gathering resources and farming your kitten off for those resources- the latter to me is a job and I won’t do it in a game.

Its a game to me regardless. I dont see things in a game as a job.

Nice try, but if you want to start calling out, I can do it too.
It was you who said initially that all i needed to do was login 5 minutes each day for two weeks, and I’ll have it. I was replying to that. You can scroll up, it’s still there. This can’t be more further from the truth. And that’s what my reply was all about, but you took it to another level.

I never said that one needs to have it tomorrow, nor the day after. In fact all I sad is that I won’t be able to get it in 2 weeks, like Lindsey mentioned in her video. How you understood that I want it “urgently” is beyond me, since I won’t go for ascended weapon, at all. I’ll be happy with my Legendary.

Do you even realize how much of dungeon running or WvW, one will need to do to get all the mats needed for the ascended, with current dungeon/WvW rewards? Champ-specific mats, jumping puzzle-specific mats, exotic-mats and so on…
I like how you keep conveniently forgetting the “full” story and full requirements. Back item: yeah you have 2 ways to get it, grind FotM or craft it. Nice way to forget that you still need to play FotM to get those mist essences, that are required by the recipe. So you are still locked into playing FotM. Also, when FotM was released the only way to get rings was through Maw bonus chest. Later they introduced pristines. Same goes for all other trinkets. Initially, there was only one way in getting them.

Again, I don’t know about you, but I got an exotic only once from all the world bosses I ever did. Only once. And it was some exotic mask from the bonus chest. Once! I can only dream of dropping something of any real value, Forget about the precursors. So with that drop rate of exotics, what do you honestly think that the drop rate of Teq’s ascended will be? I honestly hope it will be higher, but I highly doubt it.

Stop dismissing any argument people have just because it doesn’t conform to your play style. I don’t do much of the open world. It’s boring. Dungeons are fun, and I mostly run Arah because it’s pure fun, mechanic-, lore- and graphics-wise. IMO, it’s the most lore-heavy dungeon in this game. And I do WvW. So where does that leave people with similar playstyles as mine, who will go for ascended. Again, just because you like to roam open world, doesn’t mean the rest of the players have to do the same.

And please, stop pulling out arbitrary numbers out of thin air, just because they suit your point. This goes for all sides.

If you have all required mats already from playing the game the past few months, then all you really need to do is login at a craft center and hit the button. Or at a place of power. Then log back out.

If you dont have the mats that have been available for the past year, then sure your gonna have to play catch up a little bit. But thats like a brand new player complaining he has to craft to 400 and get to level 80 and that he has no gold -.-.

And again Ascended isn’t really required for anything. Yes its a small stat boost but its not needed nor required to remain competitive in any way shape or form. This is because the game is not built around stats but rather built around dodging, reading a fight and knowledge of the profession you are fighting as well as your build vs their build. Gear is the very last and farthest thing on the pvp totem pole in GW2. That however is not true about other mmo’s like WoW and games like Aion etc etc.

I enjoy playing the game. I am not going to login after the patch and say omg omg I need to start grinding. I will go check out the new content and changes. Go get my kitten kicked by the new dragon revamp with everyone else on the server. I will then go look at my crafting see what I have what I dont have and get to 500 (which in reality will probably take only 15-30 minutes). Probably do my daily, maybe monthly if its not gonna be to time consuming.

Given it took about an hour per craft to hit 400 I would say not long…

Your question about drop rates could be turned around in your direction as well…

Everyone is QQing when they have NO idea what the drop rates will be like.

Lastly as I stated I am not a PvPer I am a collector.

People are also forgetting the account wide 300% magic find they will be able to work towards which will likely increase drop rates for mats as well.

Again if you consider two weeks a grind, I question why you ever got into MMOs in the first place…

In all technicalities, we don’t have much information on that. The “two weeks” per weapon part is ONLY for the time gating parts. It’s time you’ll not be able to shorten more.

Will it take only two weeks to gather all the other materials? How long to level your craft to 500? How many exotics you’ll need to salvage to get the special new component? How many dragon events you’ll need to complete to get those special ores?

Ascended weapons and gear are SOLELY for the people who WANT a MILD post 80 grind… ie. the TOP PvPers and, like myself, collectors…

I have 0 respect for a so called “top” PvPer that needs his stats boost hidden behind heavy grind to win at PvP.

Ascended gear and pvp are non factors.

Anyone that pvp’s in this game knows that Build/skill > gear any day of the week.

Also, for the “it’s only two weeks crowd” let’s assume that, yes, you have the 50-60G of materials you need (per weapon) already. Now you just need 20 of something you can only get one of per day, per account. That’s 20 days.

I take a look at the characters I play regularly, and to get back to where I am right now, having best in slot everywhere, I’m looking at a absolute minimum of 320 days. Assuming I don’t miss a day. To get back to the level I’m at right now. Do you start to see the issue here?

I can knock that down, give up on all my alts, and play one character. That puts me at a mere 120 days, assuming I don’t ever skip one, to – again – get back to where I am right now. This is what a treadmill is. You keep walking to stay where you are – if you stop, you fall off. This is uncool.

Thats on you, alot of people don’t play several characters religiously…. and if they do they aren’t really casual.

As a casual Player I have 8 characters I started back in beta. Only 2 of my characters really have full ascended. The rest are just 80 with exotics and really subpar gear.

And that is not what a treadmill is.

A treadmill is where they release a FULL SET of gear, then 3 months later they release a new FULL SET of gear that is basically required for the next content which forces you to get it or you cant do the new content. Then they release another set then another set then another set.

GW2 has done no such thing over the course of an entire year they have released PART of a new set. And are just now releasing the weapon. A year and a half for an entire new tier of gear and no word on whether there will be a set after that. That is not a treadmill. That is a one time thing. If it starts repeating then by all means call it a treadmill.

Seriously? I mean SERIOUSLY? I just don’t understand all the QQing that happens in MMOs these days! What the hell has happened to MMO society that you all have this sense of self entitlement? Why must it be I want this NOW or I am going to pitch a cry baby tantrum? God FORBID you have to WORK for something?

Do you walk into a work environment with ZERO experience DEMANDING that you be given a management position IMMEDIATELY?

NO!

So why in the world would you expect the best things in a game to be any different? SERIOUSLY?!

Maybe it’s a generational thing… I started with UO the EQ and many more after that… and before you all start talking about oh here he goes with his uphill both ways in the snow argument… no offense but… games used to be MUUUUUUCH harder… to the point that getting the best things would put most of the GW2 community into the fetal position whimpering for their momma…

I EXPECT to have to work to get what I want and by god I do just that… grow up and get over it… put on your big boy pants and spend the, OH NO, two weeks it takes to craft your ascended weapons… Jesus even when I say that it makes me laugh…

oK a couple of things.
people who are against Ascended gear mostly make reasonable posts, pointing out the flaws in the basic concept, not posts like this. I don’t know what to call this

If you don’t understand the issues involved, say so, read the posts that explain it.

The idea that you have to work in a game is stupid, it is a game, not a job. Most of us have played games like that, this is why be bought GW2.
There is also a big difference between working for goals of your choosing and having an arbitrary goal shoved down your throat by the game.

Nobody is being self- entitled, no-one is claiming they should get it for free- we are questioning the reason why we should get it at all.

As for your generational comment- I am 42.
I have enough stuff going on in my rl not to have the time or the energy to put up with nonsense from my hobbies that I use to relax.

Thats just it, its not a job even with ascended being introduced.

Its not required for dungeons, raiding or anything else. So therefore it is the player that looks at new things and views it as a job.

That is a messed up mentality to begin with.

I mean look at a board game like monopoly. The goal is to aquire more estates, and money then everyone else. You work your way around the board buying up properties and such. Do people view it as a job? No they view it as a game with a freaking goal lol.

Look at FPS games like battlefield or COD. They have progressive jumps in ranks, and weapons and loadouts for your weapons, are they required? No you can still shoot someone in the face and kill them without being a 5 star general with 1k hours under your belt and a golden ak that has a grip and other crap on it. Do you look at obtaining those weapon upgrades and such as a job? NO you play the game you have fun and you get them along the way.

A mmo normally requires players to adventure, gather, produce goods, build up characters to be strong…. traditionally speaking. GW2 accomplishes that. You aren’t being required to really do anything different then play the kitten game lol. How on earth do you view playing a game and gathering resources and stuff to increase your character’s efficiency or power as a job?
Do you view equipping new weapon sets and killing things with them to unlock the next one as a job?
Do you view getting skill points as you leveled for utility skills as a job?
Do you view getting to level 80 as a job?
Do you view crafting to 400 as a job?
Do you view gathering nodes as a job?
Do you view Daily activities and events as a job?
Do you view doing dungeons for exotic’s as a job?
Do you view gathering karma from events for exotics as a job?
Do you view exploring the world maps and completing them as a job?

If you answered yes to any of those you shouldn’t play mmo’s then. If you answered no to those then why the kitten are you complaining about ascended gear! Play the game and the gear will come.

So they launched the game, they didn’t have metrics before they launched. The situation that came up was that people were leaving the game before they introduced ascended gear. Not just a few people, a lot of people. Anet saw a situation they hadn’t counted on and had options. What options?

You see, that here is the problem. They really should have predicted that situation. Anyone that had any idea how MMO market works nowadays could have told them about the locust players. And that every new MMO gets hit by a lot of players leaving within first few months.
And, of course, those players left anyway. They would have left regardless of any choice Anet could have made.

So, in short, Anet had a choice: they could stay the course, counting on their loyal playerbase, and hope the numbers would stabilize once the locust leaves. Instead, they chose to panic. At something they should have predicted.

When your dealing with a multi million dollar title you dont rely on hope and count on loyal users.

Sorry thats just not how business works lol.

Further more many many people left before ascended came because of the simple fact there was no progression of ANY KIND whatsoever. Be it gear, or anything else.

The only thing to do at 80 was basically pvp all day with no real goal other than getting your legendary.

My entire WvW guild left the game after the first few months, leaving the statement behind. if they add some kind of character progression we will return. The game already feels stale to us and its only 4 months in. And with the addition of ranks, WvW traits, ascended. They did indeed return in full force.

So for those trying to peddle the nonsense that your losing players because of ascended and all that bs. they are also gaining many players back because of it.

Legendary / Asc. are the final tiers of gear.

Dont be silly.
Anet isn’t that stupid to get the wrath of by then loads of Legendary holders on their neck. A level 80 Legendary is worthless when the cap is 90. They will be easily upgradable.

Upgraded with a transmutation stone yes.

That they will likely provide everyone for free.

I think the downfall of players these days is that they want everything right now, and if there’s a time frame attached to it (which does not make something inaccessible), they confuse it for grind.
Patience =/= grind.

This is exactly it.

Between each release of ascended they have given everyone ample time to get it or not get it if they wanted to.

And its all been attached to content that players do anyways. Daily’s, FotM, events…. guild events, etc etc. If you play like normal you will naturally have the stuff you need for it, you DONT have to sit there and grind for 2 weeks straight lol.

Anet stated (I hate the word promise in this context) that if you grind for something in Guild Wars 2 it will be only cosmetic.

I don’t know at what point in time statements in interviews became promises. I see quite a large difference personally between a statement and a comment. After all, many statements are quite casual, where a promise implies something core.

I think I saw 3 mentions of the vertical progression thing during the years preceding the game, but it was definitely said and I’d have been happier with the game if Anet had stuck to their guns.

But I can also understand why they didn’t.

Edit: Here’s why I say it’s not a promise.

Father: Okay everyone we’re going to the zoo tomorrow.

Tomorrow arrives, it’s raining. Most of the kids don’t want to go to the zoo in the rain. The situation has changed.

Father: Let’s go to the arcade instead. That’s still fun.

Those who had their hearts set on going to the zoo naturally are angry, but I’m not so sure dad promised to go to the zoo. It was his intention to go to the zoo however…and circumstances changed.

That comparison doesn’t fit with what is going on here though. It was because of unknown circumstances that they couldn’t go to the zoo that day. Something that they could not help, that was forced upon them, that gave them no choice but to not go to the zoo. (plus zoos usually close if the weather is in unsuitable conditions) So it wasn’t because of their own free will that they couldn’t go to the zoo, it was forced upon them that they couldn’t go to the zoo.

What is going on with Anet is completely different. They had a choice. They weren’t forced by some mysterious act that made them have to go back on their word. They chose to change their direction. It wasn’t forced upon them because of a change they had no control over. They made the choice to do something else.

Don’t forget NCSOFT pulls the strings. If they say you need to add gear progression, then Anet is gonna add gear progression. Your are sadly misinformed.

how are ascended items a gear treadmill anyway? after ascended armor comes out there will be nothing else after that.

Sure there won’t. Ascended gear was added solely to placate the players who burned through content and needed something else to work towards. And once they have their ascended gear they’ll be sated, never again demanding higher tiers towards which they can work. Right?

Or perhaps they will demand more an more tiers, but ArenaNet will stand firm. They’ll tell these players, “listen, we’ve already given you one new tier. That’s all you’re going to get; we’re not adding anything else after ascended.” Is that how it’s going to be?

I don’t think either is very likely to happen. Thinking there won’t be new tiers of gear added after ascended is a bit naive, in my opinion.

I am guessing that after ascended gear they will start rolling out legendary armors.

It took a year to get this far on ascended gear….. It is a safe bet that they will not introduce a new tier of gear but rather start rolling out legendary gears after ascended. And that will I guarantee be over the course of several years. Which will give the gear chasers something to work for.

Read the below quote from Mike O’Brien, President of Arenanet.

Two things to understand before reading:
-Ascended gear is mower powerful than exotic. To debate otherwise is silly.
-You do not need ascended gear for most content — This is not the point!

“Here’s what we believe: If someone wants to play for a thousand hours to get an item that is so rare that other players can’t realistically acquire it, that rare item should be differentiated by its visual appearance and rarity alone, not by being more powerful than everything else in the game. Otherwise, your MMO becomes all about grinding to get the best gear. We don’t make grindy games — we leave the grind to other MMOs.”

-Mike Obrien, President of Arenanet

Discuss and tell me how time-gating a new tier of weapons and gear that has better stats obeys what Mike O’Brien said in his quote.

Logging in for 5 minutes a day to craft your one time daily materials for 2 weeks is not what i consider
“If someone wants to play for a thousand hours to get an item that is so rare that other players can’t realistically acquire it, that rare item should be differentiated by its visual appearance and rarity alone, not by being more powerful than everything else in the game. "

Thats a total of like 70 minutes worth of your time spread over 2 weeks. How does that fall into the category of playing thousands of hours and not realistic to get…..

Just pointing out the obvious.

Because I first need to level up my weapon smith (and w/e other crafting profession I need to level up) to 400, and with current prices, it’s all but cheap. Second, I need to grind to get the mats and craft the exotics at 400 to get to 450. Then I need to grind to get the mats to make t7 mats to go to 500. Then, I need to grind for new mats so I can finally, login once a day for 5 minutes and do what you say.
Yeah, it’s not much time to press craft once or twice per day, but you conveniently forgot all the grind that comes before you are able to press that one button.
Just pointing out the obvious.

Oh sorry add 8 hours to get your crafting up…. -.-
You dont have to grind new mats just play regularly like you normally do. Should have enough mats just from that.

Stop over exaggerating things lol

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/crafting/Ascended-Crafting-Material-List

I don’t know how you play, but my gameplay doesn’t drop 450 Mithril Ingots in 2 weeks. Actually, I don’t think I would be able to get that many ingots if I collected all of my mithril ore from day one. And that is just one tiny part of it all. Might want to check the full list, before telling me I’m exaggerating.

You are the one attaching the a time frame in which you should have your new weapon, not me. You are creating a sense of urgency that is not even needed.

Do you not hit mithril nodes when out playing during your game time? I do… I have over 1k ore just because im stingy and dont sell them on the TP. Infact i have most all the mats I need already for 2 weapons. I didn’t even really play this summer I was busy mountain biking and enjoying my summer. Ill probably pick up again this winter between snowmobiling and snowboarding and still have my weapons before the next ascended piece comes out.

It is the players that create a sense of urgency and grind in the game. Not really the game.

If you follow the natural progression of the game and play the content they release you would know its not really a gear grind. You do daily’s to for a number of reason’s achieve points, karma, money, and laurels. Those all directly contribute to getting ascended accessories. The FOTM when released was meant to be played as content, those that played it got 2 rings pretty effortlessly by level 10. The back piece came in two flavors, you could continue enjoying FOTM getting to higher levels and challenging your self and using your relics for it or you could craft it. And the crafting components were largely things that most people already had alot of just from playing.

Its the same thing with the new weapons. There are 2 ways of getting it, playing the new revamped dragon encounter and getting a unique one from that + other ascended mats. And playing as you normally do, doing events in orr and things of that nature.

Stop attaching grind to everything, just because you dont want to take your time and play the game doesn’t mean its a grind when something new comes out. Like I said go with the flow and stop exaggerating.

People … it’s time to say farewell to Guild Wars 2. Tag me if you know another good f2p mmorpg to play instead (i’m 100% serious, can’t keep up with this grinding crap forever).

And you’re going to find a free to play MMO with less grinding?

That’s pretty funny. Good luck with that.

GW1?

If Guild Wars 1 was an MMO, yeah, I’d agree with you. But since even Anet said Guild Wars 1 wasn’t an MMO, I disagree with you.

And there’s TONS of grind in Guild Wars 1….it’s just not gear grind. Anyone who says Guild Wars 1 wasn’t a grind fest wasn’t paying attention.

I think that people these days think that if you have to get new gear its a grind fest but if they added something like titles that have stats attached that you have to grind for 99% of the people kittening about gear would be cool with it lol…..

Accept it – they lied, again. There was a dramatic change in Anet’s structure right around release (2 of the 3 founders left, almost the entire dev team quit/were fired, and now we have about 6 people of the original team left.)

The people in charge now are about making money from everything – and we’re getting what you’d expect from it. Content that requires 24/7 game play, or cracking open your wallet.

It’s disappointing, and vaguely upsetting, but frankly, what I’ve come to expect from the “new” Anet.

Lie implies intent. What evidence do you have that when Anet devs made these quotes they didn’t think them true.

Fair enough – and like I said, I know that there’s virtually nobody left at Anet from the days when the game was in development. Nonetheless, literally thousands of their paying customers bought the game under those terms.

I fully agree with anyone who says that they’ve been lied to or betrayed by Anet. For all practical purposes, we weren’t given the product we PAID for upon release.

Imagine if any company other than a gaming company did this – at best, they’d be out of business. Far more likely, there would be large and costly lawsuits to cover.

“When I bought the car, it was implied that the motor would be an integral part of it. One day, I took it in for service, and the dealer told me “We no longer support the internal combustion format.” and removed the motor."

“I paid for the contract on the understanding that I would get a month’s worth of cable. After 3 days, they stopped my service, and advised me they were in the business of phone service instead.”

“You’ll get a game where all grind is for cosmetic items. Our tradition of best-in-slot gear not requiring an effort, and skill over gear, shall continue. Until a week from now.”

They done kittened up dude.

Those are horribly irrelevant.

A better one would be.

I watched interviews and trailers of a movie, paid 20 bucks to see it and it was not anything like the trailer or interviews implied and was a bad movie.

You still saw the movie, thus you paid for it. You paid a one time fee to play this game, you got many many hours/months worth of entertainment from it. It was well worth your 50 bucks. And if not oh well…. its the cost of 2 outings to go to the movies these days -.-.

I garantee what happened was this….
Game launched flooded with people, then they started losing a large amount of players due to the fact that there was literally nothing to work for. Nothing to keep players vested in the game. So they added a power creep to get people back…. had it not worked they probably wouldn’t have continued with ascended items. The fact that they are still introducing ascended gear/items means most likely they made a good call and it increased population and income from the game vs them not doing it.

Playing a game for fun is great, but the average person logging in for an hour to do some wvw then log out does not make anet money. Providing new goals for players however keeps them coming back for more and increases the odds that money will be spent on gems.

GW2 is first and foremost a business that puts food on peoples table. They WILL ALWAYS choose the path that nets them the most population and the most money, regardless of what they said for hype before the game was launched.

Just because you have goals in a game, like gear, stats, or whatever doesn’t mean you wont stick around long term if new goals are made. Because people that like to power up characters do play for fun, they however like to have a goal as well. Is that wrong or bad? No.

It’s an argument of semantics at this point. The fact is a gear tier that is higher than the previously max gear tier is being released and we have no confirmation that they will not release another tier. Whatever you want to call this situation, it doesn’t change the situation itself. It is acting and provides the same concerns and issues that a gear treadmill does.

@Vayne – I’ve been meaning to ask you this since our discussion in the other tread. Do you personally want additional tiers added? Do you think the game needs it?

I’d have been more than happy if they never had anything but cosmetic gear. That’s personally. That’s completely different than if I think the game needs it.

My son got his legendary bow. Then he stopped playing the game. He’s playing a different MMO now.

My answer to that is … good riddance. I don’t mean any offence but such people make the game worse for people like me who play for fun. People like your son simply can’t be pleased on the long term, without killing fun for people like me. That makes the “good riddance” a practical thing. People who don’t like RTS games shouldn’t be playing StarCraft either.

There are goal oriented people who need goals. Those goals don’t have to be gear, but gear is certainly an easy one to provide them with.

In fact, it’s so easy that it’s become the lazy cop out in the industry. I personally believe the route with achievement break points and account stats is the superior one.

Thats so biased.

Good riddance to him for having fun his way! lol.

Thats like me saying good riddance to someone like you for leaving because you ruin the game for me with your casual play -.-.

Stuck up much?

Adding one tier of gear does not constitute a treadmill. It is merely a flight of stairs once you get to the top (ascended) your done. There is no infinite stair case chasing new tiers of gear beyond ascended.

However if once the full ascended is out and they come out with a new tier you can officially call it a treadmill.

What will happen is that you’ll have those 80 person mobs for about a week steady and they’ll be an awful lot of complaining, name calling, and berating in the map chat towards anyone who doesn’t seem to be “doing it right” – ten times that for a loss since the penalty is death and no loot. In fact, prepare the bottles now for the QQ tears.

BUT for that week, the hardcores will be grinding away at it to get the achieves and items…

And then no one will care. It’ll be too much of a pain to get that many people together to work together for a lengthy period of time for an uncertain or for no reward. Casuals won’t have the time or skill for it. Hardcores will have all they need from it and will be back on their champ farming trains. And the rest of us will have no hope of finding 80 man teams.

Not to mention a LOT of us are running on 20 fps and an 80 man mob plus a dragon plus the environment.. hahaha… to quote the bandits “You’re kidding, right?”

It’s a nice idea but… =/ I’ll give it a try during the first few days. It’d be nice to be wrong but judging by the amount of dead events in Orr and everywhere that isn’t Queensdale…

Do you know why people farm dragons? Because that uncertain reward precursor drop chance. Do you know why they had to put a limit on how many times you kill a dragon? Because thats all some people do for the chest.

What makes you think people aren’t going to farm the hell out of teq when he is THE ONLY BOSS in the game that drops specially skinned ascended weapons, a minature and other ascended specific mats?

You haven’t been playing GW2 very long if you think this encounter will be dead after a week lol.

and require more than just mindlessly shooting at his foot

How?

I have missed the beginning of the stream, so I’m wondering if there’s any mechanic I haven’t seen yet. But from what I saw, the new mechanics are:

1. Turrets around the dragon. The (rather cute) QA girl mentioned they are not really needed to defeat Teq, and they don’t appear to make much of a difference. They remind me of the Shatterer and Jormag turrets, that no one care about.

2. Sometimes the dragons teleport players to underwater, where they take damage over time if they don’t swim up. Since people can just swim up and go back to the fight, doesn’t look like much to me.

3. There’s a new wave attack that people can jump over. It looks like it does damage, but nothing too complex.

…And that’s it? The other mechanics (bone walls, the fingers, the fear-inducing breath) were there already.

I have seen in the stream a couple groups trying and failing to kill Teq – which is a good thing, we want challenging content – but not because they weren’t coordinated enough or didn’t multitask important things while doing damage to the dragon or anything like that, no; rather because they didn’t do enough damage to what is basically a massive damage sponge.

Was there more to the fight, something I missed from the earlier comments? Or is this something like the HotW boss fights, just doing a lot of damage to a sponge?

If this is true than really they didn’t do anything cept add an annoying mechanic to it (teleporting people underwater when everyone is wearing masks? uhm anyone else see a problem with this?)

Ultimately doesn’t look like it will change much. The drops will still be based off of DPS which means no one is going to care about rezzing their fellow players because in lowering your DPS you’re cutting off your chance at the highest gear drops.

Group mechanics will most likely be ignored, like why should anyone lay down AOEs to help with the adds when they’ll likely miss the main boss which lowers ones DPS and lowers the chance for an ascended drop?

CC doesn’t work on anything because most likely the adds will have the defense against that so why bother CCing anything coming at you?

And I agree why even bother with the turrets?

So basically what we need to see is take out the teleport thing, it doesn’t even makes sense. Replace that with mobs that are affected by CC. Allow a counter for the number of times someone rezes someone in this encounter to account towards a temporary drop buff that is on until the end of the battle so that if someone is DCd during the fight and comes back when the boss is dead and checks the chest they won’t be missing anything.

This would fix the problems with the missing Anet trinity group mechanics in this fight, it will encourage coop and it would make the fight more than just about who has the most burst damage.

The turrets remove the aoe poisons, that lay at the dps zones.

No one on turrets your not gonna have footing to do any dps, its a timed fight every second you have no dps brings you that much closer to losing.

The wave requires movement.

New projectiles that do good damage to you guardian almost got 1 shot by one of them.

Before you could literally stand under him swinging and not get hit by anything…. and if you did you could basically just shrug it off.

And no matter how high your dps is, it doesn’t affect your loot chance lol. If you do enough damage to get a gold on the event then you get the same rng as everyone else that got a gold.

Yes. Because walking back for a minute is so challenging, all the while the rest of the zerg finishes the event for you instead…

Because it requires team work.

The more people die the less chance you have of winning, because its timed and theres multiple roles to be filled. If you dont res people you wont have the dps to kill it nor the people to do the other jobs required.

Had they not blocked the waypoint it would negate the roles and dps because you could just die, then zerg it rinse and repeakittens

not a hard concept taking people out of a fight for a minute or more due to bad team-play is detrimental on a timed fight.

1/ there’s only 10 MMOs in the west with more than 100,000 subscribers let alone online users, including the mastodont. 400,000 at any time would be extremely good.

2/ all reports point towards the apparent fact that Guild Wars 2 and Arena.net are doing extremely well financially. They’re still growing as a company and there’s a lot of job opportunities on their website.

3/ Several hints about behind the scenes projects, and that the living world is actually one of the smaller teams. Something big is going to happen eventually, but no one knows when or what.

4/ the current b2p model and cash shop without p2win seems to be a very solid financial strategy.

Read through massively’s GW2 section to find a lot of good sources.

Regarding Number 2 the reason they have alot of job openings is because they are not great to work for. Alot of the people that made GW2 what it is are leaving. Hence the job openings.

But Ill agree with the rest of what you said because its true.

400k users on at one time is amazing for an mmo.

WoW’s concurrent users for a launch was around 1 million sure. But after launch it fizzles down to the 250k range.

Ascended Gear to Kill Builds and Alts?

I will say the one thing I HATE ABOUT THIS GAME AND ASCENDED.

The time gating. For a company that was so so so against grind and just having fun they sure did make EVERYTHING about grinding. Time gated materials, time gated laurels, time gated this and thats. Everything is based on this simple fact. If you want to progress in GW2 you must login every single day and do your daily, complete your monthly every month, go around and gather your ONCE a day materials, DO YOUR ONCE A DAY CONVERSION at a place of power etc etc. Want those achieve points for chests and account bonus’s? Guess what more time gated content weeeeeee how original -.-.

The time gating in this game is extreme, and lets face it a flat out grind.

Had they introduced ascended as something that didn’t require users to login every single day for a month for one accessory it would probably be accepted a little better.

I for one welcome ascended weapons and armor. its not a huge gap and gives me and others something to do in the building up of a character however slight it may be. And really its not game breaking.

So you will be completely happy and have, “something to do in the building of a character,” forever more from this one iteration of power creep ?

or

Will those desiring gear progression want another step of it once they have geared up to Ascended ? And then want it again after that. And again after that ?

Ascended gear was supposed to have launched with the game it just wasn’t ready at launch.

I have doubts they will make another tier of gear beyond ascended or a stat increase.

As long as they keep nice looking gears coming in the ascended variety with the same stats ill be happy with that.

Do you WvW? Do you have more than one lvl 80? People that do are usually the ones that have this issue. If you have 1 character and just run Fractals 24/7 as god and Anet intended, then I guess everything is fine!

Yup, I have an 80 of each profession. Though I haven’t played in the past few months.

Only two of my characters have full ascended but thats okay, they are my favorite ones. And if by chance I have time to play and build up the others I will.

Each one of my alts has played WvW for a long period against other 80’s and done fine. Player error plays more of a role in WvW than gear does. Anyone that pvp’s in this game knows that.

I think you have some wrong number there.
Effectively Ascended gear is only 10% better than exotic gear and if you compare an exotic weapon for instance (power, toughness, vitality) + soldier crest with an (upcoming) ascended weapon ^PTV aswell that difference will like +3 power +3 toughness +3 vitality, i can’t see that ruining wvw experience for anyone, unless u think these +3 stats on every piece will make that much of a difference, anyways i get your point and completly understand your side

Anyways just in case you wanna check it out but you have probably already done it
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Item

Ascended trinkets are currently 10% better. Weapons will be different if the base damage is higher because weapon damage is multiplied by stats. So yeah, 9 stat points won’t be much, but increased damage and the sum of full ascended stats will be together.

Exactly this, people often don’t realize when they take a damage modifier such as crit damage that even at 100% crit chance 5% crit damage is only actually a 1.9% increase in damage because of the nature of it being multiplicative. This is in direct opposition to traits, weapon strength, and sigils that offer flat % increases to damage.

Both these two posts.

This will make a huge impact on alts, build diversity, and new players (don’t you want new customers Anet?) in WvW.

Even in PvE: if you ping all rares in a dungeon group, expect to be kicked. Try doing the same with Exotics (for example on your alt) once everyone has Ascended for their mains.

Again why are you forcing yourself to run with those types?

Those type of people already require you to have a certain setup, how is it any different by having ascended?

If someone starts a group and wants a certain setup that’s their deal, if you cant or dont want to comply with their setup, then dont join them start your own group and invite whoever you want. Its not that hard!

Guardian; PVT or Zerker?

Namu.5712

No one is deciding its bad… its pretty much proven theres 0 reason to have that type of gear in pve lol. Your part of a team, one could argue that wearing gear that neither contributes or helps the group accomplish the task at hand is selfish. I would say its more selfish to run something like PVT or MF. There is no I in team if they want a all zerker group that is the groups choice, if you don’t meet that requirement how can you consider that selfish. They are playing their way your playing yours… dont be a hypocrite.

No gear does not attribute to skill, however if you have skill there is no need for anything but faster dps, because skill > gear survive, however the same cant be said about dps skill < dps. If you are skilled you can’t dps faster if your gear isn’t for it. However if you are skilled you can mitigate damage with said skill thus removing the need for defensive gear.

What is the difference between a guard that is plinking a boss for 400 a hit maybe 800 or so on crit vs a guard that is providing the same buffs to the party but hitting 3 times as hard? Since there is no tanking in this game, there are no roles there is really no reason to have gear like that in a pve setting. Because you are now playing selfishly one could say by slowing the run down… im not talking about speed running im talking about runs that should take 10 minutes taking an hour because the group is all geared or stated poorly.

And playstyle in gw2 consists of auto attacking 90% of the time. Just saying. If you want to do that for 10 – 15 minutes on a boss vs 1 minute, then cool… find others like that I guess .

Again im not saying l2p zerker or gtfo, im saying anything but that is really a waste of time in many peoples eyes. And if someone creates a group and says thats who they want in your group then thats their choice and you saying its selfish is equally ignorant. Thats like deciding you dont want to be with a certain boy and them telling you its selfish and childish and they should want to be with you just because.

There’s more than those two stat combos. Players can use more than one stat gear set, as well as mix and matching among the many, anyway.

And no one “deserves” a kick for using the gear that suits their playstyle, whether it is Soldier’s, Berserker’s, or anything else. I am not a fan of Soldier’s gear (which doesn’t mean you shouldn’t like it) but there’s no reason to imply people are “doing it wrong” by choosing whatever gear for this or that content (other than ego-“play my way or you don’t know what you are doing”-or following what everybody else does like mindless herds-“if everybody is doing it, it must be right!” Wrong if it doesn’t suit you.)

My advice would be to forget “metas”, and find your own way. Alternatively, use “metas” as rough guides of what is currently working for many, but still find out whatever works for yourself, which is what matters in the end.

To be honest… why on earth would you want to slow your group down and be pretty much useless other than the buffs you might provide

Your not a tank, your not gonna die without it (unless your flat out horrible and dont dodge EVER). It brings nothing to your party.

Solo go for it but don’t weigh others down.

It really has nothing to do with meta. IT has everything to do with being team member in your group.

Would you take someone in all magic find gear that contributes nothing to the group? Probably not, and if you did by accident you would not be happy im sure to find that they are not contributing to your group but just extra baggage, that you carry around.

You have monthlies. They give 10 laurels.

Voila, now you only need to play 10 days a month (do 10 dailies and finish the monthly in those 10 days).

There are 4 weeks in a month.

There are 4 weekends in a month.

There are 2.5 days in a weekend.

There are 10 days you can play during the weekends of every month.

You only need to play 10 days to get 20 Laurels.

WOAH LOGICKALIMAGICXKZ

Thank you for the lack of sympathies.

10 days to get 20 laurels is technically correct, except that it takes you a month each time. I guess that’s what they call time logic?

40 laurels a month actually.

But still GW2 progression is more of a time sink then WoW at this point in time. For those that want a legendary, want ascended gear, want achieve gear. GW2 is the grindiest game ive played in a long time in that regard. And this is due to very very heavy time gating.

It’s lame really. They could have come up with a better system then making you do the same thing every day for months to get some accessories lol.

You can always block and unblock them as needed…

they can still see where you are, and further more, now it is worse because they know you are blocking them when they see “User has blocked you” pops up…..

once again, this is not the solution.

Let me put this into perspective:

Imagine facebook logs you in in any place you are whether you want it or not, and suddenly EVERYONE who has a facebook account can see where you are and have access to your phone number and can call you for free, and even show up in the place. Sure, if it is a stalker you can call the police, if it is a close family member you can tell them to buzz off. But for friends and others it doesnt work like this.

I dont know why some of you dont understand this; privacy is important, I should have more power on who I interact with.

Ya thats not the same thing… a player doesn’t get personal info ABOUT YOUR REAL LIFE ADDRESS/PHONE/ or anything that could otherwise be used to stalk you or cause you harm in reality.

Its a game if they want to waste their time following you around then so be it… why does it bother you so much? are they causing you problems? Causing you any physical/mental harm?

NO they are not. Simply block them so they cant chat with you and go about your business if they follow you around don’t pay any attention they will get bored and leave eventually.

This is a social game, yes. What followers can do is wrong however.
A friend of mine had a complete stranger starting to harass her, messaging her all the time as soon as she logged in, making sure she knew he knew where she was.

The system doesn’t need to be removed, but it does need to be changed to allow a bit of control. If you end up with someone stalkerish or harassing you, you should have the option to immediately bock them and actually have block work, unlike now where they can still see what you are doing.

While I agree that sub games are overpriced, they are so not doing something magical, let me tell you. In other games that are not sub based which I will call F2P those companies make more permanent content and they do it often. There are boxes in those games (with far less RNG mind you) which means they keep more of their players for longer.

There’s also one other thing those other titles have the Anet does not, and that is the non-manipulated means of getting loot/cosmetics/pets etc in the content with far less pain and struggle making the acquisition alot more fun. (you actually get what you want without the content disappearing or it taking months upon months to get to your goals or buying into the RNG game with RL money).

PWE has miles of better benefits to their gameplay even with the concerns over the prices of their store items in the beta NWO, and they have a better economic model then Anet’s highly manipulated and over iniflated TP.

i’d say give it time, NWO’s cash shop will probably turn into something like GW2’s cash shop over the span of like, 4 months

remember, GW2’s cash shop started out like that too, with just exp boosters, a few skins that weren’t in the black lion box and nothing noteworthy inside the box themselves

and over time, the price of gems gradually went up from the previous 30s per 100 gems to the current price of 4g per 100 gems, as well as tickets for untradable skins in the box themselves

i personally don’t mind GW2’s current cash shop model since nothing in the cash shop as of right now gives a clear and distinct advantage over players who don’t pay with real money, although the molten pickaxe did make me raise an eyebrow for a brief moment

exaggerate much 4g per 100…. try 2g 57s as the 5 day high loll…

I got an exotic from a Crazed Young Karka, with the +200% MF buff. Nuff said.

Actually that says nothing.

Because I got 2 rares and an exotic in the hour I played out there today…. and im in full zerker. with 0% MF.

Why do normal mobs....

Okay so went there today for the event. Happened upon a reef rider proceeded to kill it… took quit a bit, im a full zerker mesmer GS build getting around 6.6k crit to 8k crit with my phant.

Took about 8 seconds to kill one.

Then I happened upon a vet Reef Rider…. it had less HP than the normal version…..

Think you guys got your mobs health pools mixed up might want to check that out.

Ill make a video here shortly to show it.

So uh...when is phant getting nerfed?

I know all you mesmer fans love it because it’s soooooo easy to abuse…but anyone can see phant mesmer needs a massive nerf the size of Australia. Why? Well let’s see…unavoidable without 1-2 dodgerolls, is not blindable, crits extremely often, very easy to produce quickly or rebuild, and VERY high damage…it’s like having total OPness without even lifting a finger yourself or having any personal risk.

This does not belong. It is very broken and OP. Fix please. Thanks!

Oh and mind wrack, 6-8k + 3-5k with sword #2 skill?….in about 1 second? Instakill broken too! Did you know that even thief can’t do that anymore (with the mug nerf)?

Cool, another nerf this class because im horrible at the game and pvp.

Ever try blinding the mesmer? then locking them down? because a phant wont spawn when the mesmer is blind and the skill misses….. just point out the obvious counter since you seem to lack the common sense to do it yourself.

How does Anet afford this?

Just wondering—they pretty much are redefining the mold of MMORPG the way they’re doing it, and with no subscription fee and consantly new events how do you think they’re making enough money? The game itself is getting cheaper, too (sales n’ such) are they just doing THAT well that I shouldn’t be concerned for the company?

Yeah, never before have I felt a game was so good that I’d be concerned they weren’t charging enough. I just don’t want this to go away, lol

They make a boat load off of gems.

Probably more than if they did a sub model to be honest.

if their is a player base of 500,000 at 15 dollars a month.

Thats 7.5 million in sub money a month.

Now say that you have that same 500,000 but free to play. Now say only about half of that player base buys gems and items from the store.

Say the average monthly purchase for half the player base is 30 -50 dollars. Pretty reasonable as some people only spend 10 bucks a month while others can spend hundreds of dollars.

That gets them the same income as a sub based model but with a influx of cash when they put new items in the gem store.

And when you have people with money to burn that want to buy items that cost several thousand gold, and have no problem dropping a few grand in gems on the game…. well thats how they make their money.

Quit playing 4 months ago, can I come back>?

Getting 3300 non crit on training dummy’s currently…. though im running a build that increases my illusion’s damage by 30%.

So people running the standard zerker build will only be getting around 2300 on dummy’s non crit.

My crit potential for iZerker is 8,745ish if all hits land and crit.

Currently seeing numbers around 4.5k to 7.5k often with this build. While the max you could get without this build is around 6k.

This is assuming you have 127% crit damage. If you only have 40% to 90% crit damage you wont see anything near those numbers.

Before those numbers were seen regardless…. The thing is bugged… And needs fixed.

I agree, it does need to be fixed because before if all my hits landed and crit id be in the 10k range lol( built around illusions though)…. im just saying you can still get high numbers while its broken, by switching up your zerker build a little. If illusion damage is your thing then you can get it back to where you would expect for greatsword.
