I wonder what your basis for comparison is…”
- Jareth, King of Goblins.
There are those of us (myself especially) who’s ideas on a subject tend to get very fleshed out in their description. And being restricted to 200 words presents a personal challenge.
Just to quantify. 200 words at an average of say 5 characters per word would make about 1000 characters per post. As I recall the limit on the forum for characters is ~5000. So posts maximum limit would only be about 1/5 the size of a standard forum limit.
Suggestion: Put a word counter along side of the text box so we can see how much space we have left to type, to close out our presentations.
Simply as a best practice, I suggest building your proposal in an outside tool and copying it in. It’s a lot less rushed, you have more tools, and the window size here is really cramped vertically, making it impossible to take in the shape of a larger text all in one glance. And again, the hope is proposals stick to one post/5,000 characters. There is no suggested word limit for them.
For discussion, I think 200 words is less an inflexible goal and more a reminder delivered in numerical form to stay on point while delivering your comments .
In CDI threads it is not allowed to make the same suggestion twice (so if someone else mentioned it, dont mention it again)
Demanding that everyone have read and compared every post to their own position before making their proposal is simply not a reasonable expectation.
I SERIOUSLY think we’re losing our grip on the casual nature of most CDI contributions & participants with just about everything said in this thread from the first post on.
More tips; less rules~
“Reading the entire thread will give you an advantage in presenting ideas that are likely to interest or resonate with the Developer hosting the thread, but is not expected or required. Being current will also help you sound awesome when discussing ideas with your peers .”
I still pine over 4 year old car commercials too.
No, wait, I don’t. Except that one with the really cool chain reaction.
Uhh what they need to fix is the massive difference in materials needed between making bolts of damask and elonian squares. You need 50 cured thick leather vs a spool of silk weaving threads.
I don’t disagree, but lets pretend that would cut the cost of the finished product in half (it won’t). People would still be complaining it takes 150g instead of 15g.
Its 15 time gates, for every crafting type. If you choose to walk around those gates via the Trading Post, enjoy your economic-PvP.
Am I the only one more annoyed that Evon and Braham are voiced by the same person than anything Evon has to say? I keep expecting Evon to say “kah-bam!” .
Don’t ask us. Ask Support.
Walk me through why you think they should be in the Power/Condition Duration Line vs Precision/Crit Damage line?
Because traps (or any other source of condition damage) don’t crit?
300 points of Precision & Ferocity are wasted on skills that inflict Bleeding, Burning, and Poison. Even condition damage is a bit of a waste since it doesn’t help with Cripple or Chill.
But Condition Durations? That makes everything better for a Ranger trap-setter.
My Mesmer is skilled enough to make his mask invisible through a powerful concealing magic called “check box”
I have to laugh – the Devs for Lord of the Rings Online couldn’t figure out a minus sign to save their lives. There was almost nothing in that game that didn’t fire in reverse the first few weeks it was out. “10% chance on being hit to do 17 damage to attacker” INVARABLY healed the attacker for a couple weeks (or longer). It was so bad it went from funny, to not funny, all the way back around to funny again.
When its obvious that a minus sign has been flipped, I tend to chalk it up to crappy internal documentation. It’s almost comforting to see the silliness extends to this game too.
I thought this wasn’t suppose to be a grinding game?
And up to Exotic gear and basic skins, I’d say it’s not a grindy game. Outfitting a newly minted level 80 alt is a matter of a couple of gold in a couple of minutes either crafting the gear, cashing out some dungeon tokens, or doing a little budget shopping on the Trading Post.
I’ve got an Infinite Light on my guardian, and that was HELLA GRINDY but it’s not like my stats were defective while I pursued that goal for 8 months or so. I just played where and how I wanted, mastered Charged Lodestone farming to a tragic degree, and saved every copper I could to bribe Zomorros to turn Cores into Lodestones.
I appreciate the urge to have BiS gear. But I also don’t mind pacing myself moving towards it ((shrug)). Maybe after a few years of organized raiding I’m just used to the idea that upgrading even a single slot can take weeks of succeeding at time-gated top-difficulty encounters and beating the RNG drum over and over until my token or rare drop finally falls. Logging in for dailies or gathering a known and finite number of common crafting mats seems super-casual to me.
Out of curiosity, what do you need the karma for?
I literally zeroed my karma on Orrian Jewelry Boxes in anticipation of the liquid karma nerf (no longer affected by buffs). And after that I’ve had no trouble buying wads of obsidian Shards to keep up with my Ascended crafting.
Is it just I spend most of my time out in the open world or WvW where you trip over karma wandering around?
I would like to put in my input on the coming topics but I don’t necessarily see them as fitting into the given format. This makes me even more concerned that ideas I do post are going to get short shrift because they aren’t created using the proposed template.
Now you’re making me feel evil… radical, even… since I’m not planning to follow this format verbatim for anything I propose in the upcoming CDIs.
It says “suggested”. Twice. I’m not going to ignore it. There’s elements that they want to see like a summary up front and some self-examination of downsides. There’s an emphasis on core techniques like brevity and clarity. But, I don’t envision human readers – Host-Dev or Players – fired with enthusiasm at the prospect of the sheer monotony of reading 177 copies of “Form A” either. I choose to believe it is there to provide a baseline. That its a floor, not a ceiling.
Maybe I’ll get ignored and build up some bile for the CDI process like others have been clutching tight for months. Believe me, I have a few rude comments about how the Commander Tag thread went, but I’m willing to allow that each outing is a separate attempt, by different people, and a rung on an overall ladder, not a microcosm of the entire process forever and ever. We’ll see. I’m willing to build a couple of “off-beat” proposal posts to find out.
Wish me luck .

Proposal Overview
Redesigning the Thief’s GameplayGoal of the Proposal
Increasing their Skill Variety/Tactical Options, improval of their role as Supportr/Control, making them less dependent from Stealth, making space for more useful Utility Skills, making them, what they should originally be – the fastest most mobile Class of GW2.
Ok, while I like the basic info, I’d dump, shorten, or replace most of the generic Headers. You don’t need to open with ~

…when you could cut to the chase with line 1 reading~
Increasing Thieves’ Skill Variety & Tactical Options
Its the first thing we see – make the title itself the overview. Made possible because your approach is tightly themed and leads itself to a nice, punchy summary like that .
Associated Risks
- Shadow Walks could be too OP as Solution for making Stealth lesser dependent
Reread that. I think you could be clearer. I feel there’s a good insight here. Work it through a little more.
i will need to write a dissertation about what you guys have to do to fix rangers. i find the word limit insulting. not only do we do the work for you, but we cant even do it properly.
The suggested word limit is on discussion posts, not proposals (which I think should try to stick to the one post/5,000 character limit). You seem to have fit your commentary within such a limit quite easily. I doubt you’ll have any serious problems in that regard .
I wonder if we’d benefit from some much more basic tips? Things like “please re-read your posts from the beginning before hitting ‘Post Reply’. The ‘Preview’ button can be very helpful for this.” Maybe I will have to get off my rump and put together that tutorial after all .
While I’ve laid out my reservations before, I am intrigued by the Associated Risks header. To sincerely play the part of devils advocate against your own creation is a very high level of play in my experience. Glad to see it put forward… but I’m not holding out a lot of hope it’ll be well-utilized. Would love to be wrong on that one.
P.S. 113 words to say the above .
Let us dye the “starfield” and you’ve got multiple sales from me despite curling-toed boots being about the dumbest looking clothing concept ever in my book.
The 36 rubble piles can be looted daily.
Turns out they may not be bugged – there are more requirements to start the event than people realized.
I logged in all my lowbies for the try at a Sharkmaw silver doubloon just fine – log in for the first time on someone NOT at a jumping puzzle to eat the initial video, then make sure you grab your chest between X:10 and X:40 during any hour. You’ll only get ejected if you log in while the zone is closed to players.
One of you is in an overflow that’s not full – link up there.
Not a great solution, but a solution none the less.
Really? You’ve never played DCUO then I guess.
I’d buy a medium and heavy set if the blue part could be dyed as a 4th color, but as it stands I’m gonna pass. A shame too, since a couple of the parts fit what I’m looking for.
14/15. Need two more rescues to have the board cleared.
The tailoring one uses 15 Bolts of Damask while the Medium and Light ones use Elonian Leather and Deldrimor Ingots, so about 300g to 15g difference right there. ANet better fix it or thats kittening stupid.
They’re not going to “fix” how much PLAYERS sell stuff for.
Lion’s Arch is on fire.
That’s different.
People have reported getting Caith since the patch.
They won’t release a cape until they can do it right for the hunchbacked Charr (and the Tengu who would share their skeleton ).
There’s also the tiny detail (literally) that a cape on an Asura would be a postage stamp.
The armor seems to only use three colors. I just want them to let us use dyes to set the hue of the blue area as a fourth color option.
It like a big shout out to City of Villains.
Actually, a solo player can contribute more to the success of the map than anyone in a zerg. There are LOTS of city dwellers that need to be “motivated” to run for the gates. One person covering the larger of these clusters (like where the Ogre recue spawns) can rescue 30-40 people all by themselves. That’s way more than the zerglings accomplish when you divide up their rescue credit.
Its not enough to tag mobs – the mobs actually have to die before the escortee(s) reaches the exit and the mobs de-spawn.
Welcome to Guild Wars 2 where the only role that matters for ANYTHING is DPS.
Yes. As part of the March 18th Patch.
My Gods, a Inquest Golem Mark II with all the cubes shaped like dice.
Probability in physical form!
Even if we do take it down we’re only given two blues and a green.
What has science done?!
What has science done? I’ll tell you what it’s done:
Be Awesome (like usual)
((A dice-golem would be funny/cool))
“Get in the bag, future criminal.”
Deathspank reference: +1,000 cool points
The RNG becomes self aware?
I could totally write a tale of a rogue/misplaced/escaped Asuran probability weapon that becomes the central threat/nemesis of the plot for 5-6 months.
Just figuring out IF it’s become sapient or not could be a really creepy sequence as it plows across the world tangling up destinies like a kitten with a ball of yarn and way too much enthusiasm…
That’s not irony. Irony is when you do something to avoid something but then it occurs as a result anyway. Google Oedipus if you want to see an example. Your example falls more in line with hypocrisy rather than irony.
Well I had a fascinating read through the wikipedi entry for irony. I’ll give more thought as to how identify such tragic, farcical, and three other adjective that’ll get me infraction points when describing gross failure of internal logic in the future.
Thanks for the heads up.
Maybe it comes from living in a country that only has one time zone? With the continental United States spread across 4, making corrections for East Coast vs. West Coasts (and all points between) is just second nature.
(edited by Nike.2631)
Someone misused irony again!
You don’t find it ironic that someone asks ArenaNet to “learn” two-dozen time zones, when if they learned one time-zone themselves the problem would go away?
Its not desperation. It’s experience.
I enjoyed Champions Online tremendously. I have a lifetime subscription – Its a B2P game just like this one form my perspective. Played the holy heck out of it and amassed BiS everything for my main. Continued to play events, dabbled in PvP, and generally swanned around annihilating bad-guys by the hundreds chasing after achievements and various cosmetic gee-gaws plus a few rare seasonal items (sound familiar?).
While the level cap didn’t change, they reworked the entire gear system so that I effectively had to start over. I played maybe two whole days under the new regime and dumped the game completely aside from logging in maybe once every 3 months for screenshots. I went from paying customer who frequented the store for a number of goodies beyond my permanent subscription to totally non-involved financially.
History may repeat itself here, but I know exactly what the outcome will look like in my case. I’ve dropped about $500-$600 dollars in the gem store since launch. I expect that rate to continue into the future right up until they think I’ll tolerate the Ascended Grind a second time. Because I won’t. There’s lots of other ways to add content and keep the game fresh that don’t burn my goodwill. Hopefully they pursue those first, before finally wimping out and falling back on the level cap bump.
Please… You got an international customer base folks. For us non americans, when the kitten is afternoon “Seattle Time”?
The irony of this thread’s title and this statement is actually breathtaking.
Rather than them learning twenty-three other time zones (especially since they won’t be making 23 unique announcements…) how about people who use the game take notice of the one time zone all the announcements are always based on?
If you remember the beginning of the Nightmare Tower where entering Kessex Hills triggered an instance? Probably the same set-up upon entering (or logging-in within) Lion’s Arch.
Not a time sensitive event.

Not a features update.
Possibly some bug fixes but no overall balance pass.
Noooo!
You can’t destroy Lion’s Arch! That’s where I keep my stuff!
Praise the Stuff!
But people still do it anyway, but with no trade feature they just get scammed most of the time.
What server are you on, because on FA, we see a WTS message about once an hour, followed promptly by uproarious laughter and full-on mockery. Take you junk to the TP and post it.
And come on, who doesn’t miss Spamadan in a weird sort of way?
After logging into a few older MMOs this week and getting reacquainted/spattered from head to toe with spam… No. I don’t miss the Great Slouching Beast at all .
That I don’t have to listen to non-stop WTB and WTS spam every second of every minute of every hour of every day when I head into town to take care of maintenance is a GODDANG MIRACLE of modern design.
I’ve envisioned it as~
One minute in lane 1 then whole party on the matching platform to fight warden 1, then…
One minute in lane 2 then whole party on the matching platform to fight warden 2, then…
One minute in lane 3 then whole party on the matching platform to fight warden 3, then…
One minute in lane 4 then whole party on the matching platform to fight warden 4, then…
One minute in lane 5 then whole party on the matching platform to fight warden 5.
Possibly with fake adventurer NPC on the other platforms who automatically win or fail along with you just to maintain that sense of scale.
Party wipe resets everything. Basically 10-12 minutes of kicking butt .
Because they saw all the VP content locusts leaving and came up with Ascended as a panicked knee-jerk reaction, under the foolish belief that they’d be able to keep all of them playing, even though most of those players are -still- gone.
So in your model of MMO gamer behavior there’s an alarm clock that goes off repeating: “Good morning, its day 63 of the game and all the locusts are gone now!”?
Odds are good they saw a pattern – “N% of players will full Exotic gear stop logging in with 10 days. ALL players are going to reach that point, and we’ll continue to lose N% just as fast as they finish gearing up. Fortunately, only 15% of the total have reached that point already, so we still have time to take action to try reduce N as it’s applied to the other 85%…”
Ascended gear was never about recovering those who were lost (the strategies for that are quite different…). It’s about staunching the flow of those yet to reach character sheet-wide BiS. In this case by making BiS take weeks per slot instead of 2-3 hours.
I beg to differ. But I doubt you or I are going to see eye to eye on this. I will never stop believing that Ascended has done more damage than good.
I don’t disagree it’s caused damage. I just think the imaginary realm where Ascended never happened looked a lot darker (and emptier) to the people with more of the facts than you’re making it out to be. If they were wildly dissatisfied with the outcome, its wouldn’t be hard at all to make modest tweaks to the process to make it less grindy. This was a large part of the vertical progression CDI discussions, and while I don’t think we’ll see the massive revisions some players asked for, I think we will see more attention paid to not kicking people with alts in the junk quite so hard as they do now.
If i take as a sample everyone i knew who wanted ascended, they failed miserably, because every single one of those people left the game long ago.
I bet you know a HUGE percentage of the 3,000,000+ box owners.
Huge.
Staggering, even.
Like, oh, maybe a 50,000th of the players the people who make the decisions track.
Its a BUSINESS. A hundred-million dollar a year enterprise. These decisions do not get picked out of a &)((#@^ hat.
Is it the right decision for every player? Of course not. But they didn’t decide to try it just because everything was peachy.
We were fine with just exotic. We didn’t need Ascended. We didn’t need difficult to get armor. We didn’t need this grind.
If that were true, then why do you think the people who watch the whole of the player base every single second suddenly scrambled to implement what is indeed a massive gear grind?
Your belief that you are a proud member of the majority-demographic aside, there are two options:
A) ArenaNet is staffed entirely by morons who wanted to make as much work for themselves as they did for the players, right before they put themselves out on the street.
B) They saw a substantial number of players gear up to full exotic within weeks of launch… and then those players never logged in again.
As amusing as saying “It must be A” might be, they’re not actually intent on wiping out their own source of income. NOBODY spends as much time and effort designing a system like this as was expended without a clear and present NEED.
So, I’ll ask – do you see any of this giving a sense of synergy or gigglingly-awesome combos?
The biggest problem to me has being while the profession works down a list of rangery-expectations I can totally see having been on a whiteboard at one point, it has terrible internal connections. When I’m on my Necro and punch blood is power, then use focus-4 to stuff the self-inflicted conditions back on my target, then pop Epidemic and watch the waves of bleeding ripple outward to annihilate everything in draw-distance (and consume those conditions for extra healing just for good measure), I know I’m on a class that has at least the potential to rock.
The interactions between Ranger Utilties and their other Utilities or Weapons skills, when they exist at all, are just DULL. Its not just “I swing my sword, I swing my sword again” its also “I set a trap, I set another, trap, hey, look at that I set another trap, wooo… bleh.” Nothing chains together to be more than just a bunch of grey, leafy, there-’cause-rangers-always-do-that parts.
Does this fix that?
ps: on your previous CDI you asked for the 3 class whiwh need to evolve.
Why do you talk only on ranger? What about the other two?
Because it was a vote to determine which one goes first.
If we don’t wreck this opportunity too badly, more will follow.
