I would estimate with the full buffs and a desperate power build, a warrior could eviscerate lupi for 39k. That is a fairly reasonable figure. You would really need both frost spirits to proc, but it could be done.
And warrs will never hit Lupi for 39k damage in one shot… unless Anet breaks something.

But couldn’t it happen that the banner(s) aren’t up for ~20 seconds exactly at the time when you’re in the next fight? Couldn’t it be that having the banner(s) up the entire time even for trash mobs outperforms the x% personal damage increase?
Trash mobs die instantly or are skipped. Either bosses are so far apart that the banner will be up by the next one, or so close that you can carry it to the next one. Anyone who has played warrior extensively knows when to drop their banner in every dungeon to maximize it.
ya. the mesmer in that video is not really taking advantage of the (6) bonus from scholar runes.
on some fights, yes, he hardly takes any damage. but on others, he spends most of it below 90%.

Troll: over 90% the whole fight.
Frost magic guy: Over 90% about half the time

Mesmer is literally the most survivable class in melee range. If you are struggling to stay above 90% on a Mesmer you won’t be able to do it on any class.
Please enlighten me, mr. pro, maybe record a dungeon run where you use for example sword+focus in berseker gear and can stay above 90% health at least 70% of the time in combat.
I use ruby orbs, because it fits my playstyle, i won’t be bothered to use necessary utilites and skills to keep myself above 90% just so i can have that 10% bonus if it doesn’t fit my preffered playstyle.
If you can keep yourself above 90% that doesn’t mean you’re doing more damage overall then other mesmer below 90%.

1. Where is this 70% number from? Scholar runes are better if you are there for 24% of the time. That’s not too crazy. So if you’re going to use some number, why not use the real one?
2. Special utilities? You have 2 dodges, vigor on crit, Distortion, and Blurred Frenzy. This is part of every mesmer sword build. If your “playstyle” doesn’t include using these things optimally, your playstyle needs to change.

Fair enough. I’ve seen players in my personal guild plunk 100+ golds for t3 cultural armor skin and I just shook my head.
I have 6 legendaries and 8 sets of t3 armor. Don’t have an aneurysm.
Nike, I’m not saying your suggested build is inferior. But we’re talking very minor differences in practice. I would rather have the convenience of my banner trait than kill something 1 auto-chain faster.
7% is 7%. I could see sacrificing 7% dps for some valuable reason, but banner cool down reduction is not that reason. And if you have an ‘anything goes’, ‘who cares about 7%’ attitude, why are you trying to min max in the first place?
A crucially important point you’re missing: the 2% partywide dps youre missing in your build is cumulatively, over time, orders of magnitude more valuable than the bonus of faster banner cool down in the first place.
I didn’t say he had to be brutally honest to the pugs, I was being honest with him. The problem is quite simply that pugs are getting him killed because they don’t know how to play. His best options are stop pugging or to form the group so he can weed out the riff raff.
And ranging mobs that are supposed to be fought in melee IS undignified and dumpy.

Your build is already 5% worse personal dps, and since it loses 2 stacks of vuln, it works out to be significantly worse party dps on top of 7% personal dps loss, despite the banner trait which you mistakenly believe adds some sort of significant dps.

Empowered is 3% solo, so I imagine you will get something else from your group, probably 2 boons. Only putting 5 in Discipline does reduce your critical damage by 25%. However, it increases your base damage modifiers by 15%, and gives you access to rending strikes which is another 2%. 17% base damage is about 50% better than 25% critical damage.
I have, as it turns out, already thought this through.
I’ll be brutally honest and give you good advice, since you were kind enough to give me a shout out in the OP.
1. You have stepped your game up to the next level. You are committed to being good and doing things properly. However, you have reached the point where you’re better than the average quality of the random pugs you get. Now is the time to force them to step up. You need to be the instance starter/group starter for these pugs, and you need to gear check them. If they are the ones causing you to die, you ought to take control of the party and begin to get strict with the types you’ll allow into your pugs.
2. If you still find yourself in a bad pug, and you have no choice, just range. I know using a ranged weapon is undignified and dumpy, but so is the Clerics Mesmer who is getting you killed. When you get a depressing pug, just longbow ftw.
If you’re running a pure axe build, try 30/25/0/10/5. However, do not use that dumb banner trait, use Empowered.

I’ve been using Greatsword for a while now but I begun to get bored of it. I swapped to Axe/Mace yesterday and it’s a whole lot better. The auto attack damage is insane, add a fire sigil and sigil of force to that and it’s even better. Can constantly apply 8 stacks of Vulnerability and even more if you take the 33% chane on crit +1 vulnerability. It’s also great for the likes of kiting champions while still attacking, and not being rooted to the one spot (gs #2) for large damage.

Ascended mats are free, other than the reagent. Every item that goes into crafting Deldrimor Steel ingots is harvestable in wvw, for free.

The anti-ascended argument boils down to two camps.
1. Crafting to 500 is too expensive and doing three dynamic events per day is too much of a grind!

It doesnt have to be this way, what if we could choose a “tank” to make our live easier and take a “healer/support” with us but it would take 40% (2 of 5 dealing less damage) longer than running full DPS but it would be easier.
On the other hand, running full DPS (glasscannon) should be more risky than other setups, but with the reward of being faster (5 of 5 dealing full damage).
This… is what the game already is, minus the “tank” because there is no aggro control skills.

Based on my admittedly limited experience in WvW (like 10 hours a month) I can assure you that most WvWer’s are pretty terrible.
