They have been steadily rising as the surge of players hitting 80 need them for crafting.

Only green wood really hasn’t taken a hit.

I just tell people, I don’t worry about port costs anymore if I can chop 3 trees when I get there.

Moving the nodes around has really messed up the bots that harvest in other games so much that I never see bots in this game harvest nodes. Trees in particular I suspect are hard to target dynamically.

I know when I leveled huntsman a lot of times, esp in the iron ranges it was a lot cheaper to make metal parts than wood ones (contrary to the leveling guides).

This is a feature commonly implemented in games with housing. While it does encourage repeat customers vs lowest price it doesn’t do well with economies of scale.

We’d be better off with character to character trading for people who wanted to avoid the TP. (Anet does not want us to avoid the TP and their tax)

@ Katz,
I was running around Caledon Forest, Metrica, Brisban Wilds and Sparkfly Fen. I’m sorry I can’t narrow it down more than that, I didn’t make a note of any nearby landmarks. Though come to think of it, I probably should have.

I’ve got it in Metrica and Sparkfly Fen. I’d say Metrica Province is your best chance. There are 2-3 nodes it can spawn in as one of the options.

BoP crafted stuff was one of the worst things WoW ever did. It just encouraged more people who didn’t care about crafting to start crafting.

If you want there to be any hope of making money crafting, then you need patterns that are sufficiently rare where most people won’t want to get them (Think Rep Grind Grinds in WoW or rare drops from events).

Maybe they could do them as a karma vendor at the end of a dynamic event chain that will only sell to you if you sufficiently helped complete the chain.

Some of these patterns need to look cool as well so people actually want them, esp if they have a unique skin.

I’ve done highest level crafting in 4 games. Trust me, raise the bar even just a little and you eliminate just enough. (Specialization is another method of limiting patterns, but it’s annoying. Imagine if you could make only top tier Exotic items in 1-2 of your craft’s classes.)

lv400 crafting worth the time and money?

I believe its a different experience for everyone.

Yesterday I leveled my tailoring from 125 to 400 and crafted carrion exotics for my main. Total spent 6.5g – Cost of the exotic set from the TP about 8.5g.

I did, of course, have part of the mats for leveling, I would say about 70% of the leather/fiber scraps and 30% of fine mats and zero of the T6 mats + 12 ectos. Whatever I was missing I bought of the TP.

I could have sold all mats, buy the set and prob have leftover money (1-2 g) but now I have a max craft and an exotic set, so I think its worth, if you do it right. I did not follow any of the guides though as those seem to be maximized to cost as little as possible and not to help you make as much of your money back as possible.

With tailor that doesn’t surprise me. I used a guide for huntsman which has very few sale-able items as you go along (compared to leatherworker which let me put about 25% on the TP vs vendor) and found a lot of times I could buy insignia for about half the price of making them and as long as I was willing to take 30 min to farm extra wood/ore I could vendor the “cheapest route” items back for about 80% of what I spent.

When all the guns are going to the vendor you make the cheapest one.

The guides aren’t all that because the prices of materials change a lot too. Elder Wood and Mithril cost about the same, so Pistols ended up being as cheap or cheaper than the Bows called for by the guide.

How well does this type of build solo farm?

I ran a bomb build last night and I still feel really squishy. It also feels weird getting used to running up and dropping bombs everywhere rather than throwing grenades like I’m used to.

Is there a target Vitality (HP?) target you are shooting for?

Just wanted to edit in the build I’m considering:

I don’t have any problem soloing this way. Either Flash/Frost Grenades, or Gluebomb (Glue Gun on Pistol 2) to slow them down.

Mobs that will get you are multiples with snares and shooters.

Get a healing ring of some sort down and circle kite them in the ring.

I’m not saying this is the most effective source of damage, but since Pistol builds have a lot of AOE I overaggro a lot.

Vanilla could be added to those bags along with chili peppers et. If even 10% was vanilla and 10% was peppers when it otherwise would have been butter it would be a good thing.

(You do use a lot of butter).

The only low level herb I think they did a pretty decent job on was Pepper, but I think they should make 2 stacks per combine, perhaps 2 salt + 1 peppercorn = 2 salt/pepper

The only craft that gave me fits until I was higher level was cooking. It’s nice to do on an alt, but there are way too many ingredients on karma vendors or that have been moved to obscure herb nodes to keep that one as you level.

All the other crafts the mats are right on the TP if you don’t get enough.

1) Show the depth of the market to sellers on the sell tab. I use it more here than when buying.

2) Change the default order of “Items I’ve sold” to the reverse order they were sold in, not the order they were listed.

That way when 15s shows up to pickup I know where it came from without having to scroll several pages.

Leather/Cloth I’ve had to buy sometimes (I actually bought all my rugged since it was so dirt cheep and I wasn’t in those zones yet) but metal and wood, never.

Perhaps I level slower than you guys. I do know that I aggressively go after nodes. I salvaged nearly everything at lower levels, but from about lvl 50 on I only salvage whites. Blues I vendor, and greens I TP/vendor.

Other than the ones from 375+ I haven’t really made an insignia in a while. They are normally 1/3 to 1/2 the price of the mats to make them, and most people’s biggest complaint seems to be the rare materials.

Seriously sell the rare materials on the TP and buy the 3-4 cheaper insignia or inscription.

Buying inscriptions or at least dowels cuts down on the wood you need. Midrange wood right now is selling for about 1s per tree you chop.

I don’t really play the TP. I do look for stuff I can craft at a profit. (I found some buy orders on leg parts that were enough above the mat prices to make about 20s profit, but that wasn’t make it or break it for me.).

Generally I’ve been able to farm the metal/wood, buy insignias, sell extra mats and level each tier for 20-30s time you take off the cost of the stuff I sold/vendored. That’s basically max 2g to level a craft to 400.

Would I be richer if I sold all the mats? Sure, but I have a 400/400 crafter that has basically only bought jewelry and upgrades from the TP.

It’s also the fact that Omnomberry Bars are that much better than the next MF food due to the gold boost and the fact that +MF is THE food to run so everything else rots.

I see a lot of people running Flamethrower and then complaining about it.

Elixer Gun 5 seems to really help the group out, so I’m reluctant to drop it for something else so I guess toolbelt would be what I would drop since I mostly just use the wrench and magnet to pull shooters.

I hope diminishing returns wont hit me too hard :-)

And for my lvl 50 set I realize that I will have to start farming a lot sooner – or get the money to buy the Scales.

Buy the insignias they are a LOT cheaper than the scales.

One problem is that crafters are forced to either deliberately farm for materials or buy them on TP — this is part of the problem … there is an artificial demand and the bots/farmers the ones profiting from it.

I leveled up two characters to 40+ and I still didn’t have enough Fine materials to get Weaponsmithing past the first tier — that’s a big problem with drop rates on Fine materials.

or you could spend a couple silver and buy them? Or better yet buy the low level inscriptions that are being sold for less than the cost to make.

Wide spread market manipulation???

NoOneShotU.3479

I figure, when all the level 30-ish leather armor except the pants is 1 or 2 silver and all the pants (including cloth and chain as well as leather) cost 8+ silver, that either something is really screwed up with the droprates, or someone is playing cutesy with the market.

And then I refuse to buy the kitten things until the price goes down.

What this means is that everyone is skilling up on gloves and pants are actually profitable.

Pants and Vests cost a lot more to make than gloves and masks, so people skill up on gloves and masks.

Gloves and Masks flood the TP, pants and vests are in short supply.

How can crafting be made profitable?

in Crafting

NoOneShotU.3479

They need to add critical crafting, critical items would sell, yes there is still chance involved, but anything that is static will make nothing in the long run as everyone can do it too easily. e.g omniberry 30% magic find and 40% gold, critical does 60% magic find and 80% gold, the odds of critical are 10% with another 5% from consumables made by chefs. Check out lotro’s economy, they have criticals and crafting works.

They had that in DAoC for MP items and basically you just vendored all the non criticals.

It was cheaper to buy lvl 50 armor for your level 30 guy than lvl 30 armor because of all the 99’s on people’s merchants.

Later on they gave you the ability to do quests to up your quality which made more sense rather than continuing to throw gallons of (vendor bought) mats down the drain.

I’ve never seemed to have an issue with this once I got past about level 20.

Normally I don’t have to make a full set, just fill in the holes. I just hit level 70 last night and I’m still wearing my lvl 65 gear (the blue 70 stuff isn’t really an upgrade).

Normally I use the cheapest discovery path (say 4 cheapest items and 2 cheapest insignia) but I’ll go out of my way to discover a pattern I want for myself.

It is important to gather everything you can. Buy filler at the TP, and sell off stuff you don’t need to raise money.

>.< opps typing at work , too many keyboards not enough hands.

this is actually a very nice way to "grind’ mats to craft as long as the bags are cheaper than what your after

That was definitely my intention when making this post. I buy 15 – 25 bags all the time to stock my collectibles tab so that way when I level up professions I have tons of mats at my disposal. I’ve leveled Huntsman on an alt after buying about 200 of each type of bag and had some mats even left over.

So while buying the bags might not have turned a profit immediately they definitely saved me an investment in the long run.

I did something like this last night (found a bag with little to no butter or chocolate) to get mats for crafting. I figured I needed them anyway and why not test the theory.

The buy/sell spread on bags is really low now that people have been in this market for a while. Some bags are even getting close to vendor prices.

(Unless a 10c rise in price is attributed to some mystic forge deal I don’t know about).

I normally farm my own wood, and I understand the population surge, so seeing wood prices rise going into the weekend is one thing but a 10c increase straight up?

I’m guessing someone with deep pockets decided to take advantage of the lower respawn and “correct” the market on their own.

How can crafting be made profitable?

in Crafting

NoOneShotU.3479

Recipes you actually have to put effort in obtaining. Imagine if precursors were crafted and the recipe came from the MF. Profitable? yes.

That’s an extreme example, but think Factions in Wow. The only way to get some of those patterns was to grind rep for a LONG time.

Even at 80 when I quit you could likely count the number of people with Exalted Thorium Brotherhood rep per server on one hand.

Think specialization paths. Do a quest or two, pvp whatever to get a rare discovery item. Once you unlock it you can buy it for karma or honor somewhere.

The skillpoint fix is a bandaid fix because it just makes skillpoints valuable to sell not the value add.

in Crafting

NoOneShotU.3479

I’m up to about 200 now. Every time I hit a snag in “discovery” it was usually due to not having enough mats. This is what I did on my 2nd chef (which went much better than the first which I tried to use a leveling guide).

1) Every type of food item you can bank you should have. Do a search for stuff on the TP in your cooking range. With rare exceptions (Vanilla Bean comes to mind) it will be cheap. Always try to have 2-3 of them minimum.

2) Craft in at least 75 point intervals. That way you can start using some of those precursor ingredients you’ve been crafting a long the way like balls of dough that don’t go in the material bank.

3) Pay attention to how many unknown recipes there are with those components.

4) If you do find a cheep food that you will consume, don’t be afraid to make a few along the way. (I consume a lot of +MF food).
