Hoghwash, everyone knows that developers aren’t human, you just plug in the feeding tube and they’ll spew out code all day and all night. Maybe a little downtime for maintenance and cleaning like once a month.

well then why arnt we in canthi/elona yet ;-(
maybe they need new operating systems?
sometimes when my computer is acting up I turn it off and then back on so maybe they should roll some defibulators into the office?

Regional issues, Cantha causes devs to bluescreens since they don’t have the full Eastern Language Pack installed, so we’ll probably have to wait for the Service Pack to be released before they can produce such content.

Fun, but unrewarding.

My main focus in this game is skins, which requires a lot of gold, a lot of map-specific currency, a lot of time wasted in praying to RNGesus (or no time at all if you’re one of those with good luck), or a lot of time grinding something that isn’t RNGated but has painfully high requirements – none of which WvW offers. I might poke my head in it once more if WvW tournament ever graces us again, but if I’m going to do something that doesn’t get me closer to adding something else to my wardrobe, I’ll play another game instead.

Of course I can’t speak for everyone, but I imagine a few wardrobe hunters share this sentiment.

Colin posted on reddit (yes, annoying that it wasn’t here) at the beginning of this month that they’ve read the feedback and will be working on graphics options that allow you to select what you want to reduce. It’s likely we won’t see them re-implement the old effects until it goes live.

No idea when that’ll happen, but not this year. Everyone’s off for Christmas-New Years vacation.

Sorry so long in responding to you. I broke my left hand yesterday and have been taking it easy with ice soaks and such. Your response is appreciated.

Ouch, my condolences, hope the break wasn’t too bad

You’re correct, so far that I’ve seen, there have been no other visual nerfs since the last batch on Dec. 1st. However, the ones we got on the November 17th patch were such doozies, it would have been fantastic if Colin, or someone, would have seen fit to address the community then. The ire was there, this thread was here. Instead, the nerfs continued in silence, and though I see your point 100% about work having been started, and obviously the aura nerfs were part of a patch ‘package’ so to speak and it’s not easy to just stop an already rolling train (I’m no programmer of any type, I’m lucky if my reformats end up well!) communication of player concerns goes a long, imo.

I truly hope that these sliders really are a work in progress. Unfortunately, I’m beginning to feel like it’s a mushroom feeding technique due to the lack of actual information we’re all receiving on the issue. As many others have pointed out, the need for all of this nerfing made minimal sense, we still have major partical effects.. huge birds.. the PvP tourney tags added on everyone and their brother’s heads (view-able everywhere except PvP it’s been stated, how much sense does that make!?).

It’d be great if ANet could, or would take the time to address their customers here about this. At the end of the day, I know I personally would be a little more giving of some patience and understanding if there was more transparency here, on these forums, about the game I play and support, that I didn’t have to go to Reddit to find.

Yeah, I understand that, but I think expecting anything during the vacation period is a little pointless since it’s pretty much guaranteed there’s probably only one lonely intern at the office (well, maybe two) and maybe a handful of developers who are hiding from their in-laws by staying at work.

I fully support just complaining about it though, it was a dumb idea to start nerfing the effects like that and the communication certainly does leave something to be desired (I’ve seen worse, but even in that case they didn’t neglect to repeat anything written in twitter posts on the main forums). If nothing else, at least don’t make us run around three or four different sources to scrounge for information.

Wintersday JP Issue "Blocking Progress"

This can be good news… if they only overlooked it and know how to fix it then I wonder if we can get a new build with the known fix implemented within only a few hours.

How about it Anet? Can I look forward to logging in and adding one more reply to this thread to say “Thank You!” before the end of the day?

Pretty Please?

I’m assuming they were out the door the day before Christmas Eve and won’t be back until after New Years, which is right before the weekend so everyone will probably be nursing hangovers the entire time. I can’t see a hotfix earlier than next Tuesday, honestly.

A living, breathing, ever-changing world is an awesome concept for a game, but it’s ultimately a bit naive for a business. Sure, you make current players feel involved, but at what cost? Running your dev team ragged to hammer out content at a breakneck pace and alienating potential/returning players who missed old content?

I mean, really, if you want to grow your customer base the advertising slogan shouldn’t be “too bad, your fault for not joining earlier” or “too bad, you did join early enough but your RNG sucked and you’ll never get another chance again”.

It’s not designed to behave this way, it’s a bug with the map closing system that prevents some maps from closing after reaching 0:00 and people who happen to be in those maps take advantage of the infinite time limit to farm jumps. Since the system can’t close a map, it can’t open a new one, so you’re stuck competing with others trying to get into one of the few new maps that are created.

Edit: that’s only for the jumping puzzle though, I don’t know why you’re having problems getting into the snowball mayhem or bell choir ones, didn’t have any problems getting into those.

ArenaNet you broke your game’s visual effects… people hate it… fix it..

Yeah, no. Be reasonable, Christmas just passed and New Years is coming up, it was a given there was going to be an interruption on work due to the holidays.

Yeah, no. You be reasonable. People have been asking for a revert, communication here, anything, for a month. Over 700 posts. They’ve been pretty reasonable. So, yeah, now they’re getting frustrated.

Folks have time off for the holidays. It would have stood to reason players might get a little peeved to log in and read about their graphics getting nerfed, or just discover it themselves to their own dismay while playing. Why couldn’t this have waited till after the holidays? Of course, because at that point, the holidays couldn’t be used as the grand scapegoat as to why folks are not being answered, or where these sliders might be, or when we can expect to see them implemented instead of “should be seeing in the future”. Should and Will are worlds apart, and the lack of communication reeks. How much work is that in the grand scheme of all this? The silence here speaks volumes and none of it is flattering.

Looking at the date of the reddit post, it looks like they stopped the visual nerfs after Colin posted (correct me if I’m wrong, I don’t see anything in the patch notes after the aura nerfs on Dec. 1st); while it is annoying that he posted on reddit and not the official forums, it’s still an indicator that they shifted gears from an across-the-board visual nerf to working on FX options after two weeks of feedback.

Given you can’t just drop projects mid-build to start on something new, it’s more than likely they didn’t start working on the new options until a day or two before the last build went live on the 15th, but part of that time would have been taken up by bug fixes, which they were working on up until the 22nd.

Could communication be better? I agree it probably could, but I never studied PR, so I don’t know what kind of considerations go into that. The most I can comment on are programming and project management, and from that perspective I don’t believe they’re taking an inordinate amount of time.

Since you have what appears to be a private instance, I’m fairly sure that anybody can score higher than that if they get their own private instance.

A private instance is an instance that doesn’t kick you when the timer ends because “map full.”. You can farm in there basically forever.

No, it’s possible to be stuck alone in a regular map. There’s something wrong with the system that allocates players, because I was once on a map that started full, was down to 5 people halfway through the timer, and only started to add people near the end (managed 17 jumps because of that).

I don’t know if it’s intended that they only dissapear when someone jumps on them, but then again if you’re alone in the dungeon no one will jump on them so they won’t dissapear at all.

The snowflakes start to break up after someone jumps on them, they’ll stay if nobody touches it though. You can see this behavior if you’re in a map with other players, but are doing a path that nobody else is.

Yeah, sadly what made Season 1 great is also what prevents it from being made repeatable/permanent content like Season 2 is. Maybe ANet will figure out a way to scale down the map-wide events that required 100+ people to work together (or more like 80+ people to work together and 20+ people to afk and leech), but they probably have too much on their plate right now to revisit old content.

Well, since ArenaNet is a privately traded company it doesn’t have a public listing and thus none of us would know what its price is, but let’s not let facts get in the way of anything.

Arenanet has introduced lore, updates, income and variety with a lot of different methods that do not require mounts, these benefits are not worth it in the dev’s eyes, why? Could be a lot of reasons, I’d guess it’s one of these:

You only have to worry about the snowman that’s waiting right after the presents, the second snowman at the corner only blows people off if they get too high, but you don’t need to get that high to avoid the snowball.

Racial Specializations

Pandaman.4758

Ugh.

Final Fantasy XI had this and people wouldn’t invite certain race/job combos into their party because – the big ones (like char), had limited magic pools. So you didn’t want them as a healer, but people wanted to be a healer on that race.

The tiny people, had less health, so if you wanted to be a small race AND a tank? No one wanted you, but if you were a black mage, then it was GREAT because your intelligence was the strongest out of all the races.

And humans were just run of the mill average.

I think it’s reasonable that a Galka had more Strength and HP than a Tarutaru, but I think a Tarutaru should have had a bonus to evade and hit due to their size (when you’re that small, hitting anything would be like swinging at the broad side of a barn). It should be possible to provide different racial bonuses and penalties while maintaining a balance that mitigates race/class pigeonholing.

Granted that would have been difficult with GW2, since active defense plays a larger role.

Racial Specializations

ANet didn’t give races any inherent bonus and their racial elite skills near-useless because they didn’t want races to be optimized toward certain professions (which I honestly think is silly, Norns and Charr warriors should punt Asura warriors around like a little, calculating football), so it’s pretty safe to say the idea of a racial elite spec is completely out of the question.

And even if it did exist, it would be underpowered to the point of pointlessness, much like the racial elite skills.

I can see Order elite specs though, but it’ll like be on the same magnitude as HoT specs (meaning there will be 9 different specializations for each Order, each tailored for each profession), whether it all comes in a single expansion or each comes with its own expansion (or $20 gem store pack) remains to be seen.

Didn’t Colin already post somewhere that the dev team is working on a visual effects slider? I could swear I saw something like that on the front page or dulfy…

Aha! The culprit ’twas reddit. The relevant excerpt being:

Seeing what’s going on in combat isn’t a PvP problem – it’s a Gw2 problem, and it’s why our teams are trying to address it. I will say last time I saw the backlog of combat visibility cleanup work, the vast majority of stuff was along the lines of what you’re all suggesting below. More programming solutions at the systemic level and going after a lot of the side-FX like noise generated by other players rather than directly impacting your own FX 100% of the time. That’s the type of stuff you should be seeing in the future as this project ramps up, and looking at more options so you can opt into more noise if you want seems pretty logical. Along with that I imagine they will have opportunities to revisit some of the concerns raised here in relation to needing to see stuff that is important and how some FX have now become unreadable that should be, it’s (mostly) great constructive and totally fair feedback imho.

Teleport hacks have been around for a long time now, it’s mostly complained about in the WvW forums, but there used to be posts about that in General Discussions regarding people teleporting to mining nodes as well (and some people theorized that we see unreachable mining nodes around certain maps because they’re “honeypots”, traps meant to catch people teleport hacking since it would be impossible to get to those nodes otherwise).

The ones we see hacking in the Wintersday JPs are the dumb ones, the smarter ones wait until they get on a glitched map and can hack without fear of being reported.

That’s simply too much work with absolutely no financial incentive, so they’re not going to do it.

I’ve created this chartflow for anet.
This could help making our gaming experience TONS times better.
Imgur link to the chart.

You don’t need to poll the map every two minutes to know how many people are on, the server can just increment a variable whenever someone joins and decrease it when they leave, and that variable’s value will trigger cases whenever it hits a threshold.

Generally speaking you want to avoid having a program do something on a timed interval if you can accomplish the same thing with a counter, as it can introduce unnecessary overhead (especially in an MMO that has a dynamic number of maps) and can be a culprit in memory leaks (since timed loops are invariably endless loops, if something interrupts it from terminating it’ll keep going until the program has to be restarted).
