Personal Story starts at level 10, all of the mobs/encounters were balanced for that level 10. You have all of you main skills for weapons 1-5 at level 10. Its just fine doing Personal Story. Maybe if you actually tried the patch you’d know this instead of making baseless arguments.

Mesmers are actually REALLY BAD at low levels. You have next to no clone generation. Not having Decoy and Mirror Image (which you won’t have because no utilities yet!) and only one weapon set generating clones (no weapon swap yet!) is really, really painful.

Hmm, I just leveled a mesmer to 30 last night… no problems. maybe its because I already have another mesmer that’s 80? I’m not sure on this one. But, I can see how it may be hard for some people. Mesmer is one of the professions that is supposed to have one of the highest learning/difficulty curves there is. Elementalist as well apparently. Though I’ve had more trouble with warrior than anything.

I fail to see how the current system is meant to retain players when 90% of new Mesmers will outright quit after dying for the billionth time in a personal story instance that was balanced around them having actual skills to use.

First: GW2 is easily one of the worst offenders among the games that I’ve played both in the egregiousness of bugs and in how easy it would have been to spot the unintended ripples.

Heh, No GW2 is not the worst offender. D3 makes me cry at times with how botched their crap can be and there are STILL bugs that were found week 1 of PTR for the 2.1 update….

I don’t know why you assume I have familiarity with that game, or why you believe that bad bugs in that game makes this more acceptable. Industry-wide issue or not, this just isn’t an acceptable standard.

When it’s so bad that the buggy nature is being picked up by the press, it definitely doesn’t help create a positive image of the game (i.e., attract new players) and as such hinders it’s long term viability.

It’s a big big problem.

Well D3 is the largest ARPG on teh market with well over 3 Million copies sold? I dont’ assume anything I was simply making a point that GW2 is NOT the only game with problems, its not the only AAA title with problems..

I never said it was right, but that’s just the way it is and there is almost nothing they can do to fix it. The fact of the matter is you CANNOT possibly test for the live environment enough to stop all bugs (big or small) from making it into the live patch. Its just not possible. All they can do is hunt the bugs and fix them after they’ve happened.

Maybe someday a company will come up with a way to make all things technology/code related ship without bugs.. but until that day why should I complain about bugs? At least they are aware they exist and are working on them. You can ask for more all you like but its simply not plausible.

Edit: Changed Any bugs to All Bugs for better clarification to what I actually meant because there is plenty of bugs that get squashed in QA testing but never ALL bugs.

A few of the very low level hearts > level 6 have had their functions changed because bundle items, and other functions were moved up to higher leveled areas and taken from the lower ones. To give played the chance to learn what they have at their disposal before getting things like environmental weapons. They aren’t gone long at all.

It’s a pointless and stupid change. When you do those early hearts you have what now, two skills?! You’re seriously telling me IT WAS TOO HARD to understand that you feed a cow by picking up a bag of feed? This was difficult to learn how?

It’s no easier to learn now either. In fact it may be harder. Instead of the first heart having bundles (and introducing them) they are held back. So people who play are now going to understand that all you do is press F on things, then at level 8 or 9 when they actually have to go back to doing things they’ll be just as confused.

Of course in actuality no one will be confused by any of this, because most people are not pants on head kittened. If they wake up in the morning and dress themselves without burning their house down they can kitten well feed a motherkittening cow.

I’m not saying anything, I was just explaining what happened. My opinion no one wants to hear on the subject so I purposefully didn’t PUT my opinion in my post. All I did was explain the change because someone asked about the change to the heart quest.

I don’t work for the game don’t jump down MY throat about it.

Besides you’re barking up the wrong tree with this because I actually LIKE most of the changes that were implemented (and yes I tried em out for myself).

D3, WoW have PTRs and they test for MONTHS in advance and still have sometimes game breaking bugs. D3 is dealing with a fine collection of them from their recent patch =/

TL;DR – Bugs on Live is not a GW2 Problem, its a Gaming Problem that is not easily solved, even by QA/PTRs.

First: GW2 is easily one of the worst offenders among the games that I’ve played both in the egregiousness of bugs and in how easy it would have been to spot the unintended ripples.

Second: The difficulty of testing for live doesn’t make this anymore acceptable to players.

Heh, No GW2 is not the worst offender. D3 makes me cry at times with how botched their crap can be and there are STILL bugs that were found week 1 of PTR for the 2.1 update…. The Update is live now and bugs still there bad ones, really bad ones that make whole parts of the game unplayable (Grift Density I’m looking at you). Anyway I use just using it as a point that is not a GW2 problem is a gaming in general problem I’m not gonna talk about other games anymore because I don’t want infractions.

I tried it, Don’t like level gating weapon skills (feels arbitrary, the old way was better felt more fluid) I don’t like how the elite is gated at 40. I don’t like how you’re handicapped underwater until 23, how you’re handicapped in the downed state until level 19, short version is i just felt handicapped arbitrarily for no obvious reason. I wish I could have opted out of the level gating of weapon skills and kept the fluid unlocking of skills as you used the weapon.

on the flipside I LOATHED after the millionth time having to spend a good hour or so just killing mobs to unlock my all of my skills on all my weapons so I could freely use them, that’s IF I could even find all of the weapons without having to buy them on the TP. All the while still not be a high enough level to swap my weapons or anything. It felt like wasted time… I like this new system because the level is what unlocks the slots, not me killing 30 of some mob and it unlocks them for all weapons whether I’ve found it yet or not. So really its all a matter of flavor. This is personal preference and not something ANet could never make everyone happy with.

Its 9:43 AM for ANet so they just got into the office a about and hour and a half ago. Their support is likely swamped so give it some time.

Personally I wouldn’t try to craft anything maybe try to do something else if you want to play the particular character. If you don’t feel like that perhaps try another character? Maybe work on some of the cool new achievements in the game =)

Can you tell us if the missing off the map POIs and Vistas are intended or bugs?

What about the skill point challenges? Are those meant to be locked out as well?

If it is a bug it would be something that should be a account-wide unlock. Because well obviously a level 80 already knows about them so no point on hiding it from them.

I’m also curious about the wardrobe, as i noticed (not on my toons, but others) that is also locked out early on. I wonder if that is intended as well?

Can’t confirm right now but I believe my level 11 I started just to try out the NPE was able to access the wardrobe. I could see this being a bug if it is not account-wide unlocked.

I am having a very hard time believing that “entertaining cows” was the proper solution for players that found “pick up food, give to cow” confusing.

This is only the case during the first few levels. The poor cows got the short end of the stick they may starve but will will be plenty entertained.

It was not that picking up something and feeding it to the cow was confusing. It was that the players skills were replaced while a player was learning the new skills. I personally think a better option for feeding the cow was to treat it as a collector event not a environmental weapon. Perhaps it can’t be a collector event as it is a heart.

Hmm. I noticed last night that there’s a been a ‘change of heart’ over in Metric Province with Researcher Kaii. Used to be you could play as a golem and do the stuff needed for this particular heart, but now the heart guy assigns a golem to you which follows you and does the stuff when you press F (repair, disrupt).

A few of the very low level hearts > level 6 have had their functions changed because bundle items, and other functions were moved up to higher leveled areas and taken from the lower ones. To give played the chance to learn what they have at their disposal before getting things like environmental weapons. They aren’t gone long at all.

- There are bugs! We’ve seen the content direction system (the little arrow) pointing people at super high level maps when it shouldn’t, some systems/features not unlocking as intended for all characters on your account once your first learns them, some systems level gated that aren’t intended to be, balance issues where certain levels appear to be very out of whack, etc. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, our team is working to figure out what happened here and fix these as quickly as possible.

That isn’t just this patch. That happens every patch.

I dont think I remember a single patch (big or small) coming out without bugs and that didnt unintentionally break other aspects of the game. Often new bugs are introduced and other times there are unintended consequences that could easily have been spotted/predicted with a bare minimum of testing.

There is unambiguously a QA issue with your process. This reflects poorly on the game and casts doubt in your ability to realise future projects.

For instance, when the megaserver was announced I had absolutely no expectation that it would be working as described/intended, and it wasnt. 5 months and a whole feature pack later and we have entirely new preposterous bugs (i.e., join missing).

We aren’t your beta test.

Please take a long look at your QA process.

every game I’ve ever played including thigns like D3, WoW, PWI, SWTOR, ArcheAge(korean),Warframe and even single player games like Torchlight, The Sims, etc have all had bugs every. single. patch. Some of them seriously screwed up bugs that make certain things unplayable. Simple fact is you cannot test for a live environment no matter how you try. There will always be bugs in any code of any game. Some are easy fixes and some are not. Just do alittle research into any games update forums and see all the bugs.

….. Rangers can’t actually control their pets, one of the main draws of the class, until level 24. Are you freaking kittenting me?

pet controls come up at level 22, pet swapping at 24. I would have deleted my ranger long before that if I’d had to level it that way. We barely have control as is, why make it even WORSE??!

Pet Controls are level 5 Swapping comes with that as well (if you’ve found another pet to charm), Alt Skill is level 13 same time you get your first Utility.

This video needs its own topic, it must be highlighted and arenanet MUST see it.

Here’s the thread: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/A-perfect-video-describing-our-NPE

Also Level 6 happens in the course of about 5-15 minutes if you follow the new guide they put in for the most part.

You said “you can do these things on level 1 if you know how to”. I said “you can’t, the game doesn’t let you”. Saying “okay, but you can in 5-15-150-1500 minutes” doesn’t really change the fact that you can’t do it straight away

Im actually QUITE surprised that there aren’t threads complaining about the guide leading them to zones where they get one shot, but then again, if they are the type of player to need and use the guide, forums are probably WAY too complicated and confusing for them.

If no one complains about something, good chances are that nobody (who can and want to report problems) really uses it. An example of it are some mesmer bugs on skills which turned out to be bugged and got fixed to the surprise of bug section frequenters.

You are confusing my words with TWO topics. My OP is about people with ALTS. All of that stuff is Unlocked at level 1 if your character is an ALT…

If you are a brand new player From what I have seen some more features are locked away.

The Guide is just there to point you where nearby things are. It does not direct you to the nearest thing for your level, just the nearest thing period.

and the biggest whining on the forums is because of people and their precious alts…

I can’t agree that the “biggest whining” is limited to “our precious alts”, though. The biggest whining is about treating players as five-year-olds and the direction the game is heading, which goes for both categories – old and new.

By the way…

which my post was about the things that AREN’T locked if you know where to find them.

If you already know how to do it, just do it.

“Hello, I’m a brand new player who read about the awesome wardrobe, and dyes, and minis and bought the game to roleplay! Wait, wha… Why the hell can’t I change my armour dyes and apply skins and get an Ember to RP with my friends?!”

Heh, No that is not what I think this is really about at all. Also Level 6 happens in the course of about 5-15 minutes if you follow the new guide they put in for the most part. Also, I am fully in support of the game gating you off until you have at least one character that has learned the mechanics, etc. I know this system isn’t perfect there are definitely things that could be tweaked, etc. But, I’m all for the effort to help teach new players the basics.

Also, hearing about something doesn’t mean you know how to do it.

All of the Events in the starter zones are in areas toward the end of the leveled areas. All the bundles etc are back by those levels as well. There is no reason to move them. Removing something which had a locked icon and a “This feature is locked until level 6” tooltip is not “fixing bugs”, it is “making undocumented changes shortly after release”.

They ARE locked on brand new accounts. However it was a bug that they were locked anywhere else. and the biggest whining on the forums is because of people and their precious alts… which my post was about the things that AREN’T locked if you know where to find them.

Things that were removed:

- Appropriate downscaling algorithm

- Items from some karma vendors (such as some vendors in Queensdale no longer selling gathering tools or salvage kits)

- No more champions in starter zones (not that they hadn’t almost all already been removed already)

Downscaling problem is a bug, they are working on it.

They took those items out because they are “locked” for new character accounts. Just go into the starter city and you can buy them there, also all the master crafters in the low-level zone Crafting Depots have gathering tools. Also Merchants outside of the lower part of the zones still sell Salvaging kits and gathering tools, like the merchant at the level 8 Heart in Caledone still sells all her wares.

Champs in starting zones were all reduced awhile ago, this is not from this patch, as far as I know. The World Bosses are all still there.

Misconceptions regarding Level gating.

Paradox.1380

A handy list I made after making a new character on a newbie account I bought during the sale.

What You Can Do At Level 1:
Dodge
Dye Armor
Harvest Materials (go into the city when you get outta the first story and buy some Gathering Tools form a crafting master)
Craft Items (just talk to the guy like before and learn the discipline)
Use the Trading Post
You can Visit Vistas AND PoIs you just aren’t directed to them.
WvW or PvP (Use Hot Keys to open the panels or go to LA from Home City to access the Asura Gates)
Can Use Wardrobe just open it up
Can use Minis
Can Access your Bank/Guild Bank
Can Access the Guild Panel Hit G
Can do Jumping Puzzles (I did Morgans Spiral at level 3 and the secret troll one at level 2 just to see)
Can Map Complete and get rewards for it.

What You Can’t Do:
The Combat stuff is true and locked behind a leveling curve that is significantly increased (It only took me 30 minutes to get to level 10 where all my weapon skills for ALL weapons were unlocked)
At level 13 about 45 min into a new character I unlocked my first Utility skill and as such unlocked Skill Point Challenges. Also, you can use Knowledge Scrolls at any level to learn new healing skills if you don’t like the first one.
You also unlock the 1-10 Personal Story at ten and can do the whole arc at once. I did that at level 13 and it got me to level 17 and have a LOT of nice goodies and included the Black Lion Key.
Diving Goggles in Starter Zones (Item bundle, this one is weird but meh)

This! Up here!

Only thing that is level gated is hints/tutorial menu for each feature function/ visibility on map in game.

Get it through your skulls! Maybe you all need these changes, as you don’t listen?

Sadly, every where I have posted this I have been ignored. What do I have to do? Make a video that disproves the other one? That will probably get ignored too.

They removed being able to die in the starting Story Mode Instance LONG before this change happened… just so you know. You can die in 1-15 zone … I died on purpose a couple times to test.

I don’t have any problem with Auto-Login GL getting it fixed, maybe contact support if you can’t fix it yourself.

Also for those that don’t really know yet; almsot everything is accessible if you know how to do it. https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/You-Can-Do-ALL-almost-the-Things-Still/first#post4393071 I made a post myself about what you CAN do from a new character stand point.

Also, I agree that they need to work on the RNG of the gear the Story and level up rewards give. I got the same Bow from the story completion as I did upon leveling up from said completing of the story. I wouldn’t say the system is perfect, but I think its still very fun and I had No trouble with finding appropriate leveling mobs in Caledon. But Metrica was always confusing to me, lol. It has a wonky lay out they might want to work on direction in that map.

Personally I went the opposite direction that the guide told me to just to see how I would fare going against where it wanted me to go and it didn’t stop me from doing anything, it instead just redirected me to the nearest heart, or if an even was in the area it flashed on it. Once you actually give it a chance its okay. I really think that that ONE Youtube video someone posted that was full of bugs, etc caused so many people to jump the gun.

Misconceptions regarding Level gating.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Paradox.1380

I really think level gating the profession F1-F4 skills was a terrible idea. Rangers will not have control over their pet until level 24. So every time a mob hits the ranger and the pet begins attacking, there is no way to recall it. When the ranger begins fighting something else, the pet will disengage, drag the previous mob with it, and engage the new target. Because most pets can’t handle 2 mobs at a time as a low level, it will die. Since rangers can’t switch pets until level 24, the ranger will become the new punching bag for the mobs.

You get your pet pant at level 7, and you get the Alt Skill shortly after that . . . Why are people blowing this outta proportion?

No one is stopping you from going anywhere… at all. Just go do it. Once you’ve unlocked it the first time it’s always there. And even if the game doesn’t SHOW you it you can still do it. How many times do we have to say it? The ONLY things really locked off at Skills and they are all unlocked before twenty minus a few of the Utilities.

Also in the OP’s defense the dyes, wardobe, etc, were level locked. Luckily it’s been fixed since.

These are all known bugs. Also the person was in the Beginning story instance at the time which might have something to do with it.

I have have non of these problems and I had my Golem Banker in the beginning Story Instance and got right into my bank from there on a new account.

You Start gaining skill points at level 13 when Utilities unlock. It may be a bug if you aren’t gaining them on level up. I started getting them at level 13.

You Can Do ALL (almost) the Things Still

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Hold Your Ponies! you CAN do almost everything you used to be able to do with the old system. I posted this in another thread but after some thought I felt it would be nice to post it here and let people know.

This is accurate after making a new character last night and getting it to level 20 (which took me about 2 hours).

You can do almsot ALL of that stuff without ever leaving your home city, FYI. They TEACH you if you haven’t already known of those functions (You know for NEW people). If you already know how to do it, just do it. There are only a few things you can’t do.

What You Can Do At Level 1:
Dodge
Dye Armor
Harvest Materials (go into the city when you get outta the first story and buy some Gathering Tools form a crafting master)
