You can do almsot ALL of that stuff without ever leaving your home city, FYI. They TEACH you if you havent’ already known of those functions (You knwo for NEW people). If you already know how to do it, jsut do it. There are only a few things you can’t do.

You can do at level 1:
Dodge
Dye Armor
Harvest Materials (go into the city when you get outta the first story and buy some form a crafting master)
Craft Items (just talk to the guy like before and learn the discipline)
You can Visit Vistas AND PoIs you just aren’t directed to them.
WvW or PvP (Use Hot Keys to open the panels or go to LA from Home City to access the Asura Gates)
Can Use Wardrobe just open it up
Can use Minis
Can Access your Bank/Guild Bank
Can Access the Guild Panel Hit G
Can do Jumping Puzzles (I did Morgans Spiral at level 3 and the secret troll one at level 2 just to see)
Can Map Complete and get rewards for it.

The Combat stuff is true and locked behind a leveling curve that is significantly increased (It only took me 30 minutes to get to level 10 where all my weapon skills for ALL weapons were unlocked)

At level 13 about 45 min into a new character I unlocked my first Utility skill and as such unlocked Skill Point Challenges. Also, you can use Knowledge Scrolls at any level to learn new healing skills if you don’t like the first one.

EDIT: you also unlock the 1-10 Personal Story at ten and can do the whole arc at once. I did that at level 13 and it got me to level 17 and have a LOT of nice goodies and included the Black Lion Key.

Its… faster to level all teh way to 15, its a little more fun almost all the functionality is the same you can do things before it tells you you can. There are very few new restrictions designed to help NEW players. Not people with 80s. Just relax and give it a chance.

It’s there so people can block people doing those emotes if they want. Maybe its redundant but the first part there is a “link” that you can right click and block/report said user for doing bad harassing things.

i’m confused? It took me maybe 30 minutes max to hit level ten (the level at which at you unlock all your basic weapon skills) getting to 15 where the rest of it and a utility unlock took me another 20ish minute because the way the personal story steps are now that got me almost all the way to 15, and finishing dailies pushed me over. I had no problems with this system at all and the best part is I don’t have to go back and kill 20-30 monsters for every weapon. I just go and they are all unlocked.

I don’y know when tehy added it but it is definitely newish (within the last few months becuase I just made a different character not long before the first feature pack and it wasn’t the same). There are new scenes the characters actually move around at times, etc. They refined it very nicely using some of their new cut scene tech that they’ve been doing LS stuff with.

I spent athe better part of my evening trying out the new player experience.. and let me tell you.. I enjoy it a lot.. but that is not why I have come here…

What drew me to make this thread is that ANet has redone the Opening Cut scenes! and that are FANTASTIC… Oh My lordy you guys have done an incredible job with that. I am glad that it wasn’t announced in the patch notes (at least I didn’t read that change) but to discover it on my own I was floored. Thanks so much for revisiting this touch.

PS- Keep your negative thoughts about the patch to other more relevant threads. This one is about the new cut scenes. Anyone else see them? =)

New Player: Elementalist Changes

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Paradox.1380

Paradox.1380

I started Guild Wars 2 a couple of days ago, and have been really enjoying playing as Elementalist. I believe a new patch was released today and I no longer have access to all attunements – I had unlocked 5 abilities for all and I am now left with only fire and water. (I’m level 10)

As a new player, it is incredibly frustrating for such changes to be made which take away abilities that my character once had. I have been looking everywhere and cannot find out when I will regain these abilities – is anyone able to confirm this?

Existing characters weren’t grandfathered in?

Here the progression:

Slot 1 is unlocked at lvl 1
Slot 2 is unlocked at lvl 2
Slot 3 is unlocked at lvl 4
slot 4 is unlocked at lvl 7
slot 5 is unlocked at lvl 10
slot 6 is unlocked at lvl 1 (heal skill)
slot 7 is unlocked at lvl 13
slot 8 is unlocked at lvl 24
slot 9 is unlocked at lvl 35
slot 10 is unlocked at lvl 40 (elite skill)
Personal Story unlocks at lvl 10.

Not unless they were over the level of which the unlocks happened.

ArenaNet: As a new player...

Paradox.1380

Many people seem to forget the flood of posts everywhere with titles like “Where should I go?”, “I feel lost.”; “I am too low”, “Mobs are too high.” or “I am dying all the time” whenever we have a great influx into the game. A large number of players needs more hand holding. Each player lost due to bad guidance and introductions it is potential loss of money. The data showed Arenanet the bitter truth. In China Arenanet heard the same complaints. They had to react. The data mined free trials forces further adjustments to the level experience. The free trial accounts probably will cause the biggest influx since launch. The goial of Arenaet will be to keep as many players as possible in the game who will buy the game afterwards.

As a side effect the new leveling system creates much more challenging content on the way to level 80. You can even say the care bear mode is over. Play the story path of Ascalonian Catacombs with a level 30 character and you will have a real hard mode. Same is valid for the other paths at level 35.

You’re assuming that a) anyone/everyone did the dungeons at the suggested levels or b) most people waited until they were level 80 before doing the dungeons

I admit those dungeons would be more challenging when done at level, but that isn’t how many people play the game (from my experiences and from posts I’ve seen here and elsewhere.)

There’s another point to be made here, actually.

I wouldn’t even know about the existence of the ascalonian catacombs and other dungeons were it not for my guild talking about them in teamspeak.

Yet again, guidance for us nubs is what is needed, nothing more or less.

The Guidance on dungeons is kinda there though… they send you in game mail 5 levels before you get to the story mode, and on the level you reach the story mode. Its the player-base the gates people from doing them at level for the most part. ANet can’t control if you don’t read the In game mail that flashes and makes noise indicating you to click it and it even has the “show me” button that shows you just where the entrance to the place is.

Though I’m sorry you didn’t know until guildies told you about it. Dungeons are my most favored thing, and I kind of wish other things in the game alerted you to their presence in the way dungeon mails do.

There are other ways of earning Keys, FYI. You can map complete for a 50/50 chance of getting a key + other mats (one of the rewards is always a Key or a Transmutation charge). And there are several maps in the game that once you know all the routes you can easily do in 20-30 minutes. Especially mid-level zones that give coveted mid-level mats. So you can do like Caledon Forest on a new character Map complete it in 20 min get chance for a key or a a Trans Charge and then when its level 10 do the PS and get a key there. I don’t know, its not like they took it away they changed their early game (not to kill key farming) to help new players have a more streamlined and easier process.

I’ve done a lot of map clearing and unless they’ve recently made a change I’d say that the likelihood of getting a key for a map clear reward is closer to 1/50.

Its a 50/50 Chance as it’s either a Trans Charge or a Key. I’m not sure on the exact math numbers but there is a pool of two items to get in that reward slot. I get keys all the time, I have 15 characters to map complete on and it works pretty well, its not as streamlined as farming a key in the old way, but it works and you get tons of other loots and such just from completing the zone if you pick up your items.

@Astral: Yeah its totally possible to kill level 15 mobs when you are about level 10-ish depending on your class. I usually roll a Guardian for this and what I do is make sure I get Green gear for level 10 and put Minor Runes and Sigils in it that give Power. It works pretty well. The changes coming to the low level unlocking of skills might make it also a little slower, but it still is a way to farm it.

Maybe. It’s still only auto attack for several levels and then skill 2 added for several more. No first utility at level 5. No weapon swapping till level 7. I suspect the new leveling system means it will take longer than 20 minutes.

But you are saying you got 8 levels in 20 minutes or less by doing map clearing? If you did I’ll have to look into this.

Since I haven’t had time to check out the changes personally, I am not sure how it will work, but yeah generally I was able to get to level 8-10 in about 20 minutes doing map completion. This includes events, btw and there are some good ones in Caledon Forest near the JP at the start of the map that cycle and overlap frequently..

Official point of view:

Yeah we thought so too. After tens of thousands of usability testers and interviews with players who tried Gw2 and left leading up to China launch both in NA/EU and in China – we learned we were wrong.

Honestly, we were kind of shocked how many systems, downed included a surprising number of players just didn’t understand. For downed, we tried a downed tutorial, building downed into the level 1 tutorial, etc. We found after usability testing with numerous different groups, the best rate of people learning and understanding it came from having it be layered complexity and the solution we went with above. Intuitively that wouldn’t have been my guess either initially, but we found people understood it better this way than all other options we tried.

This same level of testing led to the other changes as well. At the end of the day the biggest take away I’d say is: all of us, especially people who go to a reddit to discuss a game, probably know games (and Gw2) really really well. We have millions of users, and a tiny % of them frequent game forums or reddit. Just because all of us, me included, learned those systems well and thought it was all really easy doesn’t mean we are the norm

hahahahahaha what ?????
Is this for real ???

If that is the case the GW2 comunity is entitled to handicaped passes and must be
allowed to use the blue parking zones at Wallmart

So rude. I’ll never understand thinking like this. Why do you attach your experiences on others and assume just because they don’t think, act, or operate the way you do that you are entitled to say such things as to imply people aren’t at your average level of thinking? So what if they aren’t anyway?

just for reference, there is nothing wrong with those of us who have diminished capacities in the mental health department.

What are you talking about ?????

skill 1-5 where cursor hovering explains you exactly what the skill does.
I have handicapped people around me and i call them real good friends.

But to assume someone who is able to turn on a home computer,
and handles windows well enough to install games,
is not able to read what a skill does is insulting.
To me and also to these handicapped people.

I am talking about not just the skills…. The skills is one part of it. Personally I don’t care about skills being gated behind leveling since its no different than any other game I’ve played.

But what I am talking about is the hard time I had (and yes I have some mental issues most people call me “slow” and its the best I can used to describe what I have). Its NOT about the skills its about the combination of that on top of everything else that just kind of piles up and becomes hard to understand. hard to know where to go, hard to find where to level up, hard to understand crafting.

Barring any Guides or knowing where to look for them I would have been totally lost. Thankfully I have a lovely boyfriend who taught me most of what I know now.

lastly, I’m not assuming anything about anyone. I don’t attach my experiences to others. But I am going to thoroughly enjoy making a new alt today and seeing just how much easier it is for me to grasp.

1. They tested it in China. Works great for them.
2. Do NOT place your knowledge base/experience on others in shoddy “Everyone Knows” science.
3. ANet has more metrics and more information than you ever will about the over-all feeling of the start of the early game.
4. I am sorry you don’t like this change/idea but its already coming, adapt or move on is all I can tell ya.

Any single one of those points can be easily destroyed by the fact ANet hasn’t actually improved anything, but with each and every single change they make, more and more players are leaving the game. Evidence? See the financial reports.

End of topic. Move on.

To you perhaps nothing has improved. But, personally I am looking forward to it from what I have seen in you tube videos about the changes it will greatly help me and people like me understand the game. As, it does gate things away to give people a chance to learn it. As for the financial reports, I don’t even pretend to understand them, but 100mil profit in 1 year(as is projected for GW2 this year), two years after a Buy To Play game has come out is nothing to snuff at.

I don’t know if someone already mentioned this but this was a mistake by WP he added a comment edit down in the thread about how you still DO get a key at level 10 completion of Personal Story Arc. It may take awhile longer (you have to get to level 10 to unlock the Personal Story now) but you can STILL keyfarm if you want.

The essence of the key farm was speed. The reason why speed is important is because it was barely cost effective at 30 minutes per run. If it takes longer because you have to first level to 10 by playing or adding in the time needed to get 8 PvP level tomes then it’s far more cost effective to do other stuff instead.

Crafting to level doesn’t work either. Cooking, which is the cheapest using all hearts is between 3 to 4 gold to get 7 levels. While someone can get some exp by switching between different crafting to refine, this assumes they have the raw materials to start with and don’t need to spend time or gold getting them.

There are other ways of earning Keys, FYI. You can map complete for a 50/50 chance of getting a key + other mats (one of the rewards is always a Key or a Transmutation charge). I honestly think you guys need to calm down. Its not that big of deal, almost every MMO I’ve every played Level/Skill Point gates off their skills to help with NEW players learning the game giving them time to adapt, etc. They have tested this in China, they KNOW how their game plays to new people. As a player you only have one side of the experience, they have both ends. Why don’t you just let the people do their jobs? Its not even that big of a deal really.

It is not a big deal for you. And what people do here is called feedback, which is necessary for a game’s development. I complain about the game because I care, if I didn’t care I would simply play something else.

I’m all for feedback, and I understand that. Complaining without offering anything of a solution, however is NOT feedback it is whining. There are ways (a stickied thread even) about how to give constructive, proper feedback. That’s why I stated people needed to calm down. The world isn’t going down in flames because they are trying to make their game a little easier to play.

The solution is: Don’t change something that isn’t broken. I may be overreacting a bit, but levelling alts has been my favorite pass time in guild wars 2 since the very beginning, so these changes hit me hard.

You don’t know if its broken or not. Just because you understood something doesn’t mean everyone does. I distinctly remember many people complaining about how overwhelming and complicated the early game was because everything happened so fast. I for one was one of those people.

Call me a filthy casual if you want, its probably true. It took me a very long time to grasp this game and all its mechanics. It is very different from the Eastern MMO’s I was playing before.

All I know is its okay to be upset, but if you are already playing and enjoying the game this doesn’t really affect you you can streamline the process and speed level yourself because you know what to do and how to do it. A new player might be blindsided. You cannot put your experiences on someone else’s.

1. They tested it in China. Works great for them.

a vast majority of MMO’s have very, very different circumstances and environments for their eastern audiences over their western, this is because it is an industry-wide and widely acknowledged fact that what people want in a game in Asia and want people want in a game in the west are very, very different things. This is why “Anime” MMORPG’s that are ported from Asia are usually heavily modified for their western audiences or are very niche games with medium/low populations.

I understand that as a player of MANY Ported Eastern games. However, that was only one point about why I posted what I did. It doesn’t mean that they didn’t use it as a test, since there was already upstart/upset over the early game being hard to understand, confusing and overwhelming.

Just because you understand something doesn’t mean everyone will.

Personally, it took me a very long time to get the grasp of the game and even today after two years of playing I still find myself learning new things I didn’t pick up before. So I understand from the frustration of almost quitting this game because it was so many systems all at once.. it was scary and hard to get a hold of.

I don’t have all the reasons they changed it, but I highly doubt they are going to do something as drastic as rearranging the entire early leveling experience to the detriment of their game.

What? Mawdrey isn’t any more difficult than the typical ascended backpack, even down to the fractal requirement.

Fractals not difficult enough? Sure, we’ll make it so buggy that you have to abandon your entire run if you lose the hammer in Cliffside!

this bug is easily avoided, don’t let someone prone to dying/not know where they are going take the hammer. This bug ONLY happens when someone carrying the hammer falls between the wood slats. It’s not hard to avoid and doesn’t happen that often at all.

After we get the colored tags someone needs to organize and create commander tag pixel art on the map

We would need 134 people with tags >.>

Can we do this?

The player limit on any one instance of a map is 125. Perhaps a small redesign could work, though I still am not sure if you’d get everyone into the same insatnce easily.

This is not accurate… It’s more than 125. We’ve gotten more than 150 on a Bloodtide Coast map more than once for Wurm.

Paradox.1380

I’ll chime in and say congrats. This is typical of the Guild Wars 2 community as a whole from what I see in my daily rounds: Players taking opportunities when they see them to make someone else’s day.

The gestures are all different sizes, and it’s not about being able to attach a monetary value to the item given or hold it up and say that it meets a certain list of standards. The common thread in all of these is a player seeing that they can offer something nice to another, and taking the opportunity to do so with no hesitation or expectation of reward. It’s a great thing that happens constantly in Tyria. Thanks for sharing yours!

I can attest to this on several occasions some to me and some of the things I’ve given because this community is awesome.

Very early on in the game I was making a set of Corrupted weapons for my Norn Ranger, and one kind soul one day just sent me a bunch of Corrupted Lodestones to help me finish them off.

I later went and did the same thing for someone else.

A few months ago when the Lovestruck weapons came out I was talking to someone in map chat and we got on a conversation about matching weapons to armors and I offhandedly mentioned going out in search of one of the new GS skins. A random stranger sent me the GS skin from the kindness of their heart.

I later bought someone a Tormented LB skin from an extra ticket I had.

The latest thing someone gave me was a Foefire’s Essence GS and the 119g to get my T3 Sylvari Gear. I still haven’t paid this one forward just yet I am waiting for the right random stranger to pop into my life.

Other than those things there has been many a time I’ve been borrowed money, or taken on a run or other such things that I have been equally grateful for. One of my most fond memories in the game was when the Account Bound Dye system came out, there were several of us in guild that got a bunch of unID’d dyes from it and we spent the afternoon in Vigil Keep Map Chatting Dyes to give to random people it was so fun. And another fond memory I have was running into a new player in LA one day they messaged me about how “cool” one of my toons looked and we sat talking. And while we were talking I was going through my bank, I found a buncha mini pets, and some left over things in my bank and I just mailed them to them. They were so adorable when they see it. He even named the mini polar bear after me. So cute. And a final fond memory I have was also a recent one, I have a second account and I went on it to do a social experiment, I went around asking questions in map chats and various bits of the games pretending like i was new to the game and everyone that went out of their way to help me I sent gold to, there was one individual who went above and beyond with trying to help me, so when I logged onto my main account I sent them 150g and told them thank you. It was awesome to see so many people come to my aid as a “newbie” to the game as well.

Long story short is the community in general is amazing here and it’s so nice to see that people are like me in the willingness to help others when they least expect it. I know I was floored every time I was ever given anything, and floored more when I have given something out and had people be so grateful. It makes me feel good to make others feel good. and I cant’ wait for the next person I am able to put a smile on their face with a small gesture of my fortunes.

Keep it up, GW2 Community!

EDIT: I wanted to add in another story. in July the guild I was an officer in Boss Blitz Bros [BBB] was contacted by Mike Z. from ArenaNet to thank us for pulling the community together in support of doing the Boss Blitz event, and he sent us a Bonfire from the gem shop so we could have an extra Karma Bonfire at our Blitz =) I remember talking to Mike Z for a good hour or so after that. It was the most cool thing from a dev I’ve ever seen in a game and it was a topic of conversation for days afterward in our TS. RIP [BBB]!

Thanks folks. On a brighter note, they are starting to get more fun, and I’m starting to learn where I’m supposed to be in each of the cases and what I’m supposed to do. Still haven’t figured out how to avoid all the little red circles at whats-her-name, hopefully I’ll learn that before I run out of revive orbs.

I see there’s a monthly for them too. I’ll need to do one more round beyond what I need for Mawdry for that. I may just end up enjoying them enough to at least do what I’d need to for the monthly until I get better.

Which…if they were trying to nudge people into trying more things without overwhelming them, I guess mission accomplished. Still a little stressful for me, but getting not as scary, and for the most part, everyone in my pugs has been great, which I wasn’t expecting.

One more fractal day, one little mini dungeon thing (not Forsaken, I got that done, and actually happened to go when enough other people were there that I got the Explorer credit for the whole thing, which was awesome) and then I need to go grind out enough geodes for another round of bricks, and I think I got it!

Side note: Complete side note, but did anyone end up with an extra Chaos Orb that doesn’t seem to need to be completed or end up in any finished product after, I assume, making the back piece before Mawdry? I have an extra one, and it doesn’t seem like I need it, but was reluctant to throw it away. :\

If you are finding Fractals fun, if you are on the NA servers I would totally be willing to teach/explain fractals for you. The Mai Trin fight is a copy of the end half of her mini-dungeon from the last living story arc. The Cannons part with all the circles are on the ground the key is to NOT panic. Wait till you see the red circles and dodge into even a small space where there is no red. Be prepared to dodge multiple times sometimes. The other key is to spread out and avoid being near people as possible. Usually the formation is all one person to each corner of the room, and one person (usually a tanky person like War or Guardian who can take a few hits if things go bad) is in the middle part.

Also, for that fight just know even very experienced people sometimes fall down because the pattern of the red is kinda random at times. Note: try not to res someone Who is downed during the Cannon attack, wait until its over and Mai is back to try and res people.

I have another question about the fractals?

I’ve done 3/5 so far, and not all have gone super well. I always join ones that don’t specifically say something like “no wallys”, or whatever they say, and try to find one that says “daily lvl 1”.

I see that it’s a group of 4 that we do, and I get the item I need at the end. So my questions have to do with how you can tell what you are going to get?

I see there is a daily today to do “1 fractal”. Is that like 1 group of 4, that gets you the item? Or, is that “daily cluster of 4” a unique way to run the fractal to get that item, and some people run it differently? If so, how can I tell what I’m going to get in the LFG tool? Have I just been lucky so far, and the ones I’ve joined have wanted to do the little cluster of 4 that rewards the prize? Or, is “doing a fractal”, by it’s very definition, a cluster of 4 random encounters (at a given level) that reward you that item the first time you do it in a day?

And for that matter, for the daily achievement, the same question. Is it just one little let that people do and leave (leaving me with 3 more that I need to do), or is it by definition, a ‘cluster of 4’, and then you are rewarded with the daily achievement (and the stone thing you need for the mist stone thing, assuming you didn’t get one yet that day)?

2 more to do. I’ve been lucky so far, and no one has singled me out as being terrible, and I haven’t been kicked or anything, so crossing my fingers.

A Daily is a set of 3 Regular Fractals and 1 Boss fractal. As only the boss fractal at the ends give you the reward chests for daily completion. They will all be the same difficulty level as they are meant to be completed together. 3 and a boss is considered 1 run. And they usually (at early difficulties) take about the amount of time as a slightly longer dungeon run would take.

Also the daily chest is broken up into brackets. Doing any set of three and a boss in the difficulty 1-10 will grant you a daily chest. Likewise for any set done at 11-20 would be another daily. So on and so forth.

And yes, they aren’t always easy there are 12 different fractals themselves each with different encounters and they are all randomized at what ones you get. Though ANet has further fixed this so that the shorter Fractals are the ones you get first and the longer/harder ones will be the ones you are more likely to get fractal 3.

Honestly, if we got dungeon vanquishing or a sort of hard mode for maps like GW1 had it would def pull me back in.

This is CONTENT, not feature stuff, just FYI.

Adding more AP is content if you want to get technical there.

No, not really since its using things that are already in game and the minuscule additions of things that aren’t are barely tangible at best.

Whereas Entire new maps that would likely have to include new mechanics (because Heaven help ANet if if they put out new content that reuses old mechanics).

It is likely something they would tie to a living World Release anyway. And even then, its still got nothing to do wit ha feature pack.

oh come on, we JUST had a big feature patch a few months ago that changed a lot in the game, the fact were getting another one this soon was a complete surprise. and the fact that it’s small UI and quality of life improvements is no big deal. honestly I wasn’t expecting anything till maybe the end of season 2 and even then I wasn’t expecting anything big. my time line was every 6 months we get one, a big one then a smaller one like this. no one really has the right to complain about free content in a free to play game. I mean they give us a new toyota but people complain it’ s not a ferrari.

Except those of us that spend money on gems? Is it free to play then? People have a right to voice their concerns and hopefully it’s in a respectful manner. The devs also have a right to ignore whoever they want or those voices they find rude. But to say we can’t complain is not correct.

People who buy gems (myself included on many occassions) are buying them for things they want. Be it more gold, or something in the gem shop itself. They aren’t buying more “time to play” or anything like that. They are buying a product not the game itself.

Suggestion: Ability to create an empty map

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Hmm, maybe they could take an idea like this to the Guild Mission’s. they already allow Guilds to Spawn the World Bosses that need many people. Maybe, if a guild is big enough give them the option (for a very large fee of course), to also spawn that dragon in their own instance that they can then invite anyone (guildies or non) to for the encounter.

Maybe it lasts only an hour or two and then no new people can join it (kind of like they are changing how megaservers open and close) but the old people can stay on the map as long as they wish but once everyone is gone the map closes itself.

Interesting idea.

I hope we get more. Maybe next time our little pet will come packaged with another item like a shoulder piece or even just the pet itself. This was a grand way to make an item and I loved doing almost every step, and the steps I didn’t particularly care for I was able to bypass with a little monies or just a good ole “Soldier On” deal. Though I actually enjoyed the actually steps that required doing things in game.

On that note though, I don’t know if they will do another pet, or simply make the original one upgrade able to do it all. Or maybe they won’t at all since I think the amount of dust compared to Emp Frags and Dragonite Ore is substantially different for most players. But I can certainly hope it will be expanded.
