Ok im gonna spectate this game… holy crap i cannot join cause its full, holy crap if i cannot join i cannot spectate.
Seriously gw1 observer ( introduced in 2006 ) is far better then this.
Get this criticism to improve your work.
Spectator mode itself is fantastic… how they set up joining as a spectator, like you said, is completely horrible. They should not count towards the 20 max players. Its a giant block for people who actually want to play since you cant regulate how many can spectate, only max team sizes. Arenas are near unplayable right now unless you want to go 3v3 or less.
http://www.twitch.tv/parisalchuk
When is the bug where spectators dont show up in the player count going to be fixed? Almost every server is around 14/18 and ever one is full. Getting real frustrating trying to play.
How does this kind of thing pass your QA team?
This is also why spectators should NOT count towards the player limit. Its great playing in an arena that is ment to be 8v8 or 10v10 and having 12 people just spectate and it being 4v4… Especially when people who may actually want to play cant join because they are being blocked by spectators. Terrible design.

Most likely those arenas will be password protected to stop from griefers joining or people joining to learn builds. Tournaments and leagues will also most likely be locked with a shoutcaster allowed to join and stream the games.
It was my understanding that they could password protect it to keep players from entering but still allow public spectators. I could be wrong though. I’m still at work and haven’t got to play yet.
Im in the same boat. From what I have read though from reviews you can make it password protected to join the server, and once there you can select to become spectator.

My guess is tokens will be 100 gems (he did not say it will be way cheaper, the statement clearly said that prices were not set and could be much higher – for arenas, or lower – for tokens.) In which case 1g a month from 5 friends means you get to duel 1 day a month. Yay!
If time tokens are 100 gems, that’s like 3 gold. 1g a month from 5 friends is 1 and 2/3 months. Where are you getting your math from?
I went to go get lunch so I am behind but I have to respond to this. Tokens add a single DAY, not a month. So 5 guys who give 1 gold a month is 1.66 days, not months.
http://www.twitch.tv/parisalchuk
I can see that coming in the future, but that doesn’t mean that the spectator mode is worthless right now. You can still spectate some of the top teams scrimmaging against other teams or you could watch player run tournaments, which I’m sure people are planning on organizing them.

Why didn’t you test this?
Why didnt they design it better to begin with? Spectators count against max players… terrible.
http://www.twitch.tv/parisalchuk
I think they cost something like 200 gems (From their leaked screenshot)? Which is like 6g… If you can’t spend the time to get 6g it’s really not Anet’s fault. Myself, I’ll gladly pay Anet for the privilege to make a custom arena.
Prices were not actual release prices.
http://www.twitch.tv/parisalchuk
Forcing a player to purchase an item, then in addition having to pay to use it is pretty greed-driven.
You get a free month when you buy the arena….
In addition, we know it will be “way cheaper” than 200 gems for a monthly token (Colin confirmed this awhile back). Furthermore, remember that gems can be acquired in-game without paying any RL money. I imagine if you and your pals have your own private custom arena, your pals can send you 1g a month and help pay for the monthly costs.

" Each player that spectates also takes up a slot on the server. That means on a twenty slot server, if ten people are spectating, only ten players can be playing. " source
:(
Yup, I made mention of that before Colin’s response (which answered nothing). Absolutely terrible system.

Facts:
- MMOs cost tons of money to upkeep
- Most MMOs ameliorate those costs with subscription fees
- GW2 doesn’t have a subscription fee
- GW2 needs to make money to keep themselves afloat as a company and keep the servers running
- GW2 uses microtransactions to ameliorate those costs
There is nothing greedy here. Custom arenas are not required for you to enjoy the game, and if they are because you can’t live without them for whatever reason, well just join someone else’s! Playing in them is free, it’s hosting your own that costs gems. Seriously, this is a perfectly legitimate setup ANet has going on, and there’s nothing shady or greed-driven about it.
Forcing a player to purchase an item, then in addition having to pay to use it is pretty greed-driven.
As I said earlier a system where you purchase an arena and have full use for a flat fee, or a system where you purely buy time tokens to create an arena is a much better setup that still covers the companies cost to upkeep their servers without double charging the customer. Granted – if the arena cost is exactly equal or cheaper then 1 month of tokens then I am ok with this, but without information on pricing I will remain skeptical that this isnt an attempt to grab as much money as possible.
http://www.twitch.tv/parisalchuk
- Why can people not make the argument that because another game has free custom arenas that this game should not also follow suite? Both games make money from micro transactions and GW2 has the added income from the fact that you have to purchase the game in order play in the first place. The argument that LoL is much more profitable could be attributed to the fact that players arent nickel and dimed in order to have an enjoyable pvp experience.
what? skins cost rp (only obtainable through money), ip boosters cost rp (ip is a pain to obtain, it takes like a month of casual playing to get a full rune set, let alone runesets for more than 1 role), runepages cost rp(!!!! you are limited to 2 roles basically before you buy more, and they cost as much as a champ skin)… the “nickeling and diming” in LoL is so much greater than in gw2.
You may be kind of right in point #1, but you cant know if point #2 will happen. and you can’t definetly deny the moneymaking possibilities that CAs bring to the spvp side of the game.
Skins, boosters, ext… things that are unnecessary to play is not the same as forcing you to pay to create a place to play in. Imagine that during this beta these top 50 players lock their arena and only let their personal friends play. If they get rid of their free arenas as is the intention, where are those players to play? They are forced then to pay in order to play pvp in a game they already paid money to aquire.
Yes, this will be a huge money maker… thats the point, and thats the problem. $15/month fees were huge money makers too for MMOs.
http://www.twitch.tv/parisalchuk
Well, this is a game changer for me. I’ve been looking forward to this since launch. If it costs real money, then I’m probably out of guild wars 2. I enjoy the game they have so far, but if they are changing their philosophy from fun to greed, then I can’t stay. I will stay long enough to see if you both are right or wrong and to see if the GW2 team take this feedback seriously. But I’m really concerned at the moment.
They said from the beginning it was gonna cost gems and you are just beeing infatile.
“Greed” philosophy? CAs cost resources to maintain, costed resources to develop, everything in the world must pay itself, can’t you understand that? Plus, you can’t deny the problems i mention that would come if CAs were free. Please, again, get your head out of your kitten But please, be my guest, quit because there isnt dueling (rofl).
Your problems about CA’s being free are unfounded as I pointed out so I will deny it. Not to mention that CAs are intended to replace their current free arenas in their entirety. They will cost ArenaNet negligible amounts of money compared to their current system. That infrastructure already existed and development was supposedly started before they were released in the first place. Based on Anets own philosophy we should not have to pay for new content, it should be expected. Why is this case different?
In my personal opinion I support either charging for the arena setup without then having to rent it to use the arena you created or charging you 100 gems to create an arena for a day and not have to pay this upfront cost that could be made to work. However to charge you for both screen cash grab. Its the equivalent to purchasing a new house in full, then having to pay rent to live there anyway.
http://www.twitch.tv/parisalchuk
Its gonna cost gems.
Well, if that turns out to be true, then I will have lost a lot of respect for the guild wars 2 team. I very much hope that you are wrong.
why? you people just dont get it. if everyone just had a custom arena, there would be like 100000000000000000 available custom servers with weird rules and no one would put an effort into making a decent custom arena, plus custom arenas would rarely be full leading to boring matches and lack of interesting games to spectate. you guys just want everything handed to you on a plate.
and please don’t come with the “LoL has free CAs” argument, because you cant compares the cash shop LoL has with the Cash shop of gw2. LoL is far more a profitable game and can afford not carging money for CAs.
Couple things wrong I disagree with in your statement.
- Sure, there may be a lot of servers created, but those in use will be substantially less for the exact reason that their current arenas dont have an even low distribution among them: People will join arenas with other people regardless of if its their own or not. No one is going to create an arena and then sit in it hoping people join, they gain nothing from that.
- You fear there will be a lack of interesting games to spectate, however the most interesting games will be games that are tournaments and have purpose to them. Those arenas will be locked so that you cannot spectate anyway. And on servers with high amounts of players chances are good that because spectators count towards the arena population cap that few people will actually spectate random custom arenas.
- Why can people not make the argument that because another game has free custom arenas that this game should not also follow suite? Both games make money from micro transactions and GW2 has the added income from the fact that you have to purchase the game in order play in the first place. The argument that LoL is much more profitable could be attributed to the fact that players arent nickel and dimed in order to have an enjoyable pvp experience.

so why we did not have this 8months ago? was it hard to make or some1 in the top actually told u to work?
From what I have gathered from both Dev statements and working in the software field, projects at ArenaNet seem to be very flexible which is why they dont announce anything in advance. As great as that may sound its an absolutely terrible design model as it allows the company to invest great amounts of time and resources into projects that will inevitably fail. Because those projects are not announced there is no direct blowback from the customer, only internally. The, its released when its done development method, is a great ‘promotional’ statement as it seems to imply quality, but in reality its a way to remove accountability for failed projects.
That being said, chances are they had an idea for doing things one way, tried to implement it, failed, and followed that pattern until we have the current iteration which finally was able to pass quality control.
I dont know man i mean this is just a simple feature that well any game has at their release and well …. free. Also in the last SOTG they were a bit more open and they actually said clear stuff, i still go with the some1 in the top woke up.
They said they had been working on Observer Mode and Arenas since before the new year. It was initially stated it was targeted for Jan/Feb/March and that clearly was delayed till May. I find it much more likely that they ran into issues and had to redesign and code.

Why is spectaor mode limited to the maximum amount of arena slots? Not everyone enjoys watching shoutcasts but still would like to watch tournaments and such. Dont you dare say due to lag, you can output map and character data and re-render it in a separate ‘arena’ so that it would have no effect on the players playing.
http://www.twitch.tv/parisalchuk
If the nemesis is an Asuran I am done with this game. I cant stand that every single monthly update that introduced a large event (aka, not Fire Frost since this has all be prelude) has had an Asuran as its main central NPC.

What, do you want everything handed to you on a silver platter? You aren’t meant to get these things within a week/s. There supposed to be long term goals.
GW2 isn’t about jumping from upgrade to upgrade. That would mean countless tiers of gear, which is a BAD thing. If it’s cosmetic things you’re aiming for, surly once you get something which you like the look of, you don’t want to be in a hurry to get rid of it.
People have been saying that since release. Well, its months into the game and I still have yet to get a Precursor from anything (Bosses, chests, mobs, MF). Fact is they keep saying they want the game to feel more rewarding, but with every new release items that matter get harder and harder to get.
But please, rehash the same “you want everything handed to you” line for the next 6 months….
http://www.twitch.tv/parisalchuk
So when you guys mention the boss in dungeons dropping a higher amount of gold, do you mean the 26s at the end of the dungeons, together with the tokens, or the coins the boss drops after defeating him, either found on his body or in chests?
They’re talking about the coins you loot from a handful of champion / legendary creatures in dungeons. The mobs that give the token/coin/karma pouches usually have 15 silver on them as well, so the gilded infusion will kick that up to 18 silver; there are 2-3 mobs like that per path, as well as a handful of other mobs that have real silver rewards. If you do a lot of dungeons, that will ultimately be profitable.
World trash does drop coins on occasion, but not in any amounts that would justify buying that infusion; the vast bulk of your money from killing world trash comes from vendoring whites/blues/grays and opening bags, selling stuff on the TP not withstanding.
Note that you have to run a lot of dungeons for the gilded infusion to be worthwhile. You’re giving up ~8 gold worth of dyes to buy that infusion (6.8 gold after tossing them on the trading post), and at an extra 3 silver per dungeon champion kill, you’re looking at, realistically, a hundred dungeon completions before you see any profit from the infusion. Those infusions are for serious farmers or players with a fairly long time horizon, not people playing casually.
Your explanation is really interesting, anyway I’d evaluate it from a different point of view.
Let’s start with some calculations:
I take into consideration 2 of the most farmed dungeon paths.
CoF path 1 – First boss (10 silvers) – the second is a chest so nothing to boost – Last legendary boss (15 silvers) -> Total gain with 20% buff is 5 silvers per run
AC path 2 – Spider Queen (10 silvers) – Kholer (10 silvers) – 2 champion skelks (5+5 silvers) – Legendary Howler (15 silvers) -> Total gain with 20% buff is 9 silvers per run
Yes… You may need 100 or more runs of these paths to compensate the 6-8 golds from dyes. Anyway you keep wasting laurels if you buy dyes in order to get an immediate gain (and you can never save up for minipets or other cool items). With the gilded infusion you are done forever… You may need 1 month, 3 months or whatever to run a hundred dungeon paths… But then you’ll keep gain silvers without wasting your laurels.
Buying dyes, in my opinion, is a decent investment only for really casual players. Now I think the real discussion is… Gilded or Karmic?
No one can really estimate if magic find infusion is really worth it because we don’t know how much it affects the drops… And if you already have a set or armor/trinkets with 160-200% MF in the end who cares about 20% more… Karma or Golds are a certainty. As someone wrote Gilded is good only to run dungeons (coin drops from trash mobs in open world… is nothing)… The loot is not improved really much (only 5-9 silvers pre run) but in the long term it could be nice.
Karmic… is good for WvWvW, open world, and maybe it could affect even the karma reward for completing dungeons? So it’s for sure more versatile.
You can buy 15% more Orrian Jewelry Boxes with it… This means a better chance to get lodestones (and even the junk in these boxes sells well).
Maybe this one is more profitable…I’m still very undecided… especially reading half people going for gilded and the other half for karmic
Would like to ask what these other ‘cool’ items you can get with laurels are? A mini pet? Wooo….?
http://www.twitch.tv/parisalchuk
I thought we all found and agreed that ecto salvage rate was around .8 per salvage? If you believe that to be the case (I do) then calculate the cost of Ecto times 0.8 and if that number is greater than the profit you would get from selling the rare then its better to salvage.
For better or for worse, the vast majority of this game is purely math based thanks to RNG.
http://www.twitch.tv/parisalchuk
I havent gotten an exotic in a long time either. Run Fractals, COF P1 Speed Clears and at least 1 dungeon every day. Their RNG is way to wide to the point where sometimes Ill get 5 rares in 1 dungeon run and then for the next few weeks barely sniff a rare.

Any update of servers with it open?
http://www.twitch.tv/parisalchuk
I prefer the method A.net uses that doesn’t involve downtime for patches other than the fast download and no patchnotes with a lot of things that are taken out last minute.
In too many games I’ve played over the years there was always a time that the servers would be taken down to apply the patch and often include maintenance, then a long wait for the servers to get up again only to see that a lot of the patchnotes and otherwise communicated changes were taken out last minute; including nice features that were working fine on the public testserver and everyone was waiting for.
GW1 gave specific times and still had the exact same method of grabbing a new build.
Here is what I dont understand. From GW1’s twitter:
Guild Wars ?@GuildWars
A reminder that the Canthan New Year starts Thursday at noon Pacific (GMT -8) and ends on Thursday, February 7 at noon Pacific (GMT -8) ^SLThat was posted 10 minutes ago. Look at that everyone, specific times with conversion to GMT. Why is it so hard to do for GW2? I dont think we are being unreasonable at all in wanting to know when an update is going to go live.
Because the Canthan New Year is a seasonal event only that also has been around for several years and hasn’t changed all that much if at all? Can’t compare that to a bigger patch.
In the original canthan new year, they gave specific times. First Halloween, times. Wintersday, times. Literally every event they gave a specific time.
In GW2 Lost Shores, they gave a specific time. Why dont they do it anymore is the question.

Because it’s GW1 and those updates have probably been repeating for years now. This update is new and unexpected things can happen between now and release so it’s best for them to not give a time, otherwise there will be a kitten storm if there is a delay.
I was there for the first Canthan New Year and they STILL had specific times. They always told us dates and times. Not the case for the GW2 dev team I guess.
In the interest of full disclosure, did the GW1 team ever miss the window by a few minutes and get tons of crap over it?
There was times where it was missed by a few minutes, but no, generally speaking there was no major complaints. Just like tonight, when the update goes, the complaining will cease because people will be playing rather than using the forums.
http://www.twitch.tv/parisalchuk
People that keep thinking “oh well gw1 did this with updates” you’re all confusing content updates for a game that was completely instanced with districts to an entire open non instanced based game with separate servers.
The fact the world is persistant has absolutely NOTHING to do with a patch. In both cases the user will be required to restart their client in order to get the new build. The work required to create the build is one thing, but to push the update and have all users on the new build and activate it at a specific time… there is no effect.
Again, Lost Shores began at a specific, defined time, and it worked out just fine. Clearly they have the capability.

Relax, everyone. The patch will hit within the next 5.5 hours since that’s when 28th ends in GMT time zone which is the only logical time zone to use with an international game.
They use PST, not GMT.

o.O here it is almost 1 pm EST and nothing I thought for sure there would be a release sometime this morning.
For everyone who is new to the game…. ANET releases updates later in the day. For someone in EST, that usually is somewhere between 7-9pm.
Lost Shore – 12pm (noon) PST. Stop spreading false truths. We dont know, it will probably afternoon to evening, but you cannot say with certainty.

- Read dozens of thread with dozen of pages of flamming about time zones *
Now, are there still people who wonder why they always say “when it’s done” rather than giving a precise date?
… Because THIS happen when they give a precise date.
There is far more complaining about lack of time than there is when they release a precise date.
http://www.twitch.tv/parisalchuk
I honestly don’t really get it. I mean how many events have we had? Enough for people to start understanding Arena Nets way of doing things? I guess not… They always release it the day they say and they always release it during the nighttime of that day unless they notify us of it being released earlier, yet every time i see someone biching about “Its the 29th over here in Hong Kong, yall didnt keep your promise.” They have repeadetly stated they operate on Pacfic Coast timezone. I don’t see why its so hard for some of you, I guess im sorry that you guys play a game where the company operates out of such an unfamiliar timezone that you couldn’t possibly ever figure it out all by yourself.
Sorry, but Anet’s policy for the SEVEN years of GW1 was to set a date and time for their updates. I will take 7 years of their ‘way of doing it’ over the months of GW2… That being said I will continue to be dissapointed that a company refuses to keep its paying customers with information. Its not that hard. They clearly are able to ‘flip a switch’ to switch to the new build, and they should know generally how long it takes to prepare the new build and get it set. Knowing that, its not hard at all to start an event or update at a specific date.
They already did it this way for the Karka update… I dont understand why they reverted to their poor practices.

Once again a total lack of respect for the playerbase. People want to prepare to log on. Guilds want to prepare. EU people do no want to wait all night. Disgusting treatment. We need a time. If it’s the same 12:00 pst fine, but tell us that.
The only people who are even remotely affected by missing the exact moment the patch goes live today are people who want to be the first on the scene to play the trading post and try and make a killing on whatever items spike or crash in price.
Everyone else could just ignore it until tomorrow when the first Tixx event actually happens which will happen on time. The patch is today to make sure tomorrow (when it matters) is on time.
Just because some people got it in their head that today was the day Wintersday starts and it starts at 10am PST doesn’t mean Anet is ‘late’. If you don’t want to wait all night, go to sleep and enjoy it tomorrow when the real events start.
If your bolded is true why didnt they place the switch to start everything in a few days earlier so they could start on an exact time?
If its not ready today, by what moon logic would it have been ready a few days earlier?
By the moon logic known as better scheduling management. Coming from a software engineer you should not be modifying a build this close to release. It should be done and tested, thus ready to be deployed. Best practice is to deploy behind the scenes and then switch users to the new build (which they do) but they foolishly tell us wide estimates of when that switch may come.

Why are the location events on weekdays [ie, WORKdays] and not on a weekend? I understand the whole ‘global’ aspect of the game but really? Everything drops at the same time on all servers, American and European? At least set the beginning at times where people actually might be home to participate – perhaps weekday evenings; and at times appropriate to the server time zones.
Because these are not one time events and can be completed either any time that day. In addition once the asura reaches LA you can complete them all then. Stop complaining, thus far they are doing it right this time.
http://www.twitch.tv/parisalchuk
I realy hope it will be another race that Leids the event.
Why not every festival dedicatred to a special race.
Winterfest = Norn , Springfestival = Sylvari , . . .
Or make the factions lead sertain events around Tyria.
I already made a thread about how Asura lead all the events. It is getting quite annoying actually.

Personally I see the concept of a Norn Santa a little frightening.
I feel like this red-clad behemoth of a man would much rather break into my house and TAKE all of my gifts (and anything not nailed down) and throw it all on to his sled, piled high with all of his stolen loot.
Then he would take off at a break-neck pace yelling “More plunder for me! Lock your doors tight tonight!”
Rather have that then an alien with sharp teeth and big ears giving me a present after coming from a giant floating robot.

If it was built for the 14th, why was it released yesterday?
I will answer by quoting myself since you did not read my post before responding to it..
It is not rocket science to deduce that the page is built for the 14th so they don’t have to waste time on updating when they need to be focusing on the actual game on the 14th.
As much as I appreciate you actively working on things, why apologize to the very few that don’t get the obvious in a typo?
The big banner at the top of the page reads:
Wintersday
The Wondrous Workshop of Toymaker Tixx
December 14 – January 3To not understand that all the content there contained within the details is meant for the 14th and no sooner is to mean that they have some educational flaws. It makes this thread a waste of space on these forum, a waste of your time to come in here and answer it (A.Net guy), and just an all around sense that the community is that dense to not understand things.
On a personal note, thank your for taking a shot at my, and the rest of the communities education.
Actually Siphaed is very correct, the fact that a large portion of the player base cannot put 2 and 2 together is the reason for this waste of time over a simple misreading of a webpage. Also, have you ever tried to read map chat in LA? Definitely wasted college degrees there.
The way it was worded, and based on their actions of when they released the page to the public, seems to indicate the page was intended to be seen before the start of the event and be relevant throughout the event. That being said, having information on a page designed this way, having a statement saying something is available ‘Today’ generally means that it is available TODAY. Not in some future time frame.
I dont see how you can be so offended by the education of the player base for believing something that was officially released to them. The paragraph clearly stated “today” and had no indication that this was to be a feature added later. The fact of the matter remains, a user base should not even have to draw conclusions based on poor grammar. As the saying goes, “when you hear hoof beats think horses, not zebras”. It said today, why would it mean something different. And since you seem to think the player base, and thus myself, to be uneducated or poorly educated how about we consider Occam’s razor in this case. Today is generally assumed to mean the current day, not a day in the future and thus its more than valid that people would be confused about why items where not being offered in the BLTC.

So can I get a response on my friends, who attended multiple events and then received mail and another reward or my friend who didnt log in for a week around the event and still got a reward? I feel this is highly unfair.

We’re sorry about the conkittension, all. The items will be available when the Wintersday game update is live. We’re having our team correct the web page text so it’s clearer.

This is actually wrong. For consistency sake it wouldnt say December 14 – January 3. Instead it would say something like "Starting Today through Jan 3 for your argument to be correct. So again, get off your high horse and accept the fact that the page was vague and the misunderstanding from some of the community is justified.

Asurans have all the extra cash, since they own all the waypoints and charge an arm and a leg all year to use them from every player. Where do you think all that money is going?
I think we have the winning response right here! Haha, love it.
