If your defense, if that person doesn’t want to learn, then he doesn’t deserve to play Elite content. GW2 rewards those to use game mechanics to succeed. In fact, the game was made in a way that forces people to play smart, or be punished by the computer AI.

The problem is that, regardless of whether or not they want to learn, or whether or not they “deserve” to be there they are there.

That means the event scales up and with enough people running around like headless chickens failure becomes all but inevitable.

I was just in a Tequatl fight where two turret operators were firing on the Risen near them another just abandoned the turret to go fighting mobs. There were three commanders with tags on running randomly around the place, “stack on the commander!” people cried, which bloody commander? The one running left, the one running right or the one running in to melee him?

How long will boss week last?

I’m a level 61 sylvari ranger and I want to get the wings of the sunless, but I can’t go into Frostgorge sound safely yet. I have all the other achievements and I’m doing the dailies, so if I do the “here be the dragons” daily, I can get it. I am busy over the weekend and will probably get to do only one of the dailies. Is Boss week going to end on the 24th or will it last the rest of the month like other living worlds?

“Boss Week” will actually be for two weeks.

Yep, that’s prolly what’s going to happen, and at some point they’ll even stop bothering on biggest servers. So they removed a possibly boring?/farmable?/eccessively easy world event to generate a week of extreme hype/frustration which will be a ghost town and a waste of a content in what? 1 month max. Karka queen docet.

There is a balance here that I think they’re missing. In the future I think they will definitely have to revisit this event and rebalance it for fewer people otherwise they will have effectively removed it. However, I’m not counting on any kind of quick turn around: even if every server quit trying right now I doubt they’d revisit this in the next year.

Their course seems to be rigidly set and they’re rather slow to both deliver content and to change it, they’re like an oil tanker which is dangerous for an MMO, IMO.

Don’t worry.

They won’t disable the guesting system. Not over this. Not over any temporary over-subscription like this. It’s new and everyone wants to succeed now but in another week or two even the busiest servers won’t have people being put into overflows.

Put it this way, when was the last time you saw an overflow in Orr?

And this is exactly the mentality that everyone else should be taking. You can’t do kitten about it, there is no point in complaining now. It’s the nature of the encounter and the nature of MMOs. “Deal With It”

OK, fair enough. I think that in another couple of days the overflows will be fewer and we’ll be more likely to be in the main server anyway. Until then I think we’re largely wasting our time but that’s the nature of these mob events. The effort of the individual is lost when a mob is needed, our efforts feel futile when regardless of how well we play the overall progress remains the same and so the player continues to feel less and less powerful.

That is frustrating and will be what causes a lot of people to just give up.

I’m sorry, I missed the part where I was asked how much effort I planned to put in to the encounter before attempting to zone into Sparkfly Fen. Good to know there is a fair assessment of player quality going into the instancing process.

If you’re really dedicated that you want to do Teq and you still end up in an overflow? Well, sorry, tough luck. It’s happened to me many times, and I’ve grown to accept that there are limitations that are outside of your control. You need to readjust your expectations and know that you have a very slim chance you’re not going to get it. Whining about it isn’t going to do you any favors, so just accept it and deal with it.

Who says I’m whining about anything? You’ve made a hell of an assumption there.

I’m ok with overflows, I’ve tried the event a few times on overflows, I’ll continue to try it on overflows when I can’t get onto the main server and I’ve come to accept that I’m ultimately at the mercy of the other 100 or so players in the event (overflow or main) I can play fantastically well and it doesn’t really matter at all but that’s the nature of these open world events where everyone must play fantastically well too and that’s less likely in an overflow where half the people aren’t even speaking the same language as you.

I’m glad overflows can’t do it. It punishes those that refuse to work together. If you want faceroll meta content, do kitten or Jorlag.

Teq is for the hardcore, dedicated and competent. If you don’t want to dedicate any type of effort to it, you will lose, and justly so.

The reason people are being shuttled into overflows is because a lot of people (including them) want to take part in the event. They want to dedicate effort to it. If they didn’t they wouldn’t be in the overflow.

What do you think? That overflows are full of people who don’t really care about the event that the game somehow determines the likelihood of you being “hardcore, dedicated and competent” and puts you into an overflow or the main server depending on it. Wow, that’s pretty amazing! I mean, how does the game determine that? Magic I assume.

I’m always amazed at the mental gymnastics that people will pull to somehow convince themselves that they’re better than others and those others deserve whatever happens to them.

A couple minutes before he comes back (I’d say around 5 minutes), the meta even message changes and the world event shows that Tequatl is attacking (even if he isn’t there yet). There will always be someone who comes late.

So there is a meta-event change? Ok then, I guess the timer I use just hasn’t updated for that yet.

That said, an event to give people while they gather before the main event is still not a bad idea.

Forgive me if it has one already but my event timer doesn’t show it.

With the fifteen minute timer every second counts in this fight therefore we need to make sure that people can be there right from the beginning. So we need a pre-event to make sure that the troops have time to muster before he arrives.

I don’t care if the pre-event is simply “stand by the turrets and defend for a few minutes” (although it would be nice if it was defending the pact as they set up the Asuran laser and then protecting the hyleks as they build/set-up turrets in preparation of the attack, a few minutes long).

I noticed the fight was already underway last night so I zoned in to Sparkfly and got in about 2-3 minutes or so into the fight and I wasn’t the last latecomer.

When people aren’t already in the zone waiting for the fight then the problem will only get worse and the fight (and timer) will start with no players in the vicinity and then grow, which will almost guarantee failure.

People will avoid the encounter.

Then ArenaNet will nerf the encounter and lure people back. They’ve put a lot of work into this, it’s their first revamped boss I think they’ll want to see it succeed and adjust it accordingly.

They should just give an ascended loot bag that contains a rare chance at an actual weapon or a number of Tequatl tokens if you don’t get one. You can trade in a certain number of the tokens for Tequatl weapons.

The turret operators I would say have the most critical job in this event as there are only 6 turrets and after a bit of trial and error we finally hit the nail between the 6 of us and got used to the mechanics and how they should be used during this event.

That is one thing that does make me uneasy about this fight, so much in the event hinges on the actions of those 6 people. I mean, I’m used to the fact that the individual does not really matter that much in gw2’s events, after all if there are 100+ people in a fight then they cannot, but if one or two turret operators are asleep at the controls then the event could fail.

I suppose you can just let them get killed by the risen and hope a better player gets in when it’s repaired but there’s too much power concentrated there IMO.

Did I say that was all they did? No I didn’t.

Stacking up was a major part of their tactics though, their walls of reflection wouldn’t have worked as well if they hadn’t stacked up, neither would their AoE boons or healing. If they were spread out the cleanses from the turrets wouldn’t have worked half as well either.

They did it efficiently though.

Look at all the frost bows and fiery greatswords.

Tequatl has 3 hitboxes so any AoE or damage region that can overlap each hitbox just tripled its damage. That, and it seems the BG turret operators were on their game.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that as if it’s anything negative. Well done to them, that seems to be the best tactic here the same way as it in in WvW.

Thief shortbow and air elementalist staff and guardian staff could be good too because of the 3 hitboxes (Assuming they have the range).

Actually Guesting isn’t beneficial to Blackgate at all. These hundreds of guesters will simply sit in the overflow and never get to the front of the line due to the above secret. It would help lower populated servers though…

How would guesting benefit lower populated servers? The overflow maps are separate from the world maps so low population servers will still only have a half full Sparkfly Fen, oh wait, are you suggesting that everyone on a lower population server goes and guests on another, higher population server? That would help I suppose, it would allow them to bypass their own half-full Sparkfly Fen and have a chance at Tequatl.

Why don’t you stop complaining about small servers and create a post for other people that want to down Tequatil to join your server?

He’d have to be one hell of an orator to convince me to do it. Hell, I don’t think Barack Obama, Winston Churchill and John F. Kennedy together could convince me to do it, not even on a good day.

People are more likely to try to guest to the Blackgate server and camp Sparkfly Fen because that has a better chance but the tactics will spread and eventually downing him will become a common occurrence.

They’re releasing it, but phased. That way they can make sure the players don’t DDOS it on day 1. Sounds like a pretty good idea, considering how popular this tool is going to be.

Your answer is going to be “make more servers then”. That’s a ridiculous position, to reserve tons of serverspace for a tool that’ll have its peak users moments after launch. It’s a total waste of money, whereas a phased launch is far more lenient towards system resources. It’s win-win for everyone, including you.

Would you rather have a bad tool now, or a good, functional tool in a week or so? Quality takes time.

DDOS? Really? Which is more likely to be “overwhelmed” by players this LFG system which is basically a browser interfacing with a database of people who are looking for people to do things with or the Black Lion Trading company which is a database of millions of order where people are constantly selling and buying, creating and fulfilling orders?

I highly doubt that there is any chance of a “DDOS” here: for one thing, despite what you’re saying, everyone will not start creating and browsing groups straight away and even if they did creating a few hundred thousand entries over the course of an evening really shouldn’t be enough to overload the servers.

More likely it’s not quite ready, hence the “beta” status.

but you do bring up a good point. if i’m not mistaken, all “available” weapon sets are released already. apart from the aquatic weapons. so we’ll only get a few weapons to choose from come W3? hadn’t thought about that…

Yeah, I think that the aquatic weapons will be next world, all three types, and hopefully all of them will be made available after that for world 4.

Who knows, maybe they’ll reverse the once per account per day rewards then too. I’d like that, I don’t see why they feel the need to restrict what I do in game so much.

Exactly, it was/is more profitable for people to zerg the pirates and spawn champs to farm than it was to finish the event and even so on my server (Ring of Fire) and in the overflows I was in we only missed finishing the event twice in about 2 dozen tries both times it was by a narrow margin.

Here there won’t be a load of champs for people to farm while the event progresses so it’s far more profitable to do your best and get him down as much as possible.

yeah…they are working on a Wardrobe system right now…where if you have that skin unlocked…you can use it over and over and over

kinda kittening themselves over since transmutation stones will be null and void

Unless, of course, you need a transmutation stone to actually get a copy of the skin from the wardrobe system in order to apply it to armor in which case people will use more of them.

Besides, they’re “working” on lots of things. It won’t be an issue until they deliver it.

Its not ignored, they’ve stated why many times. I know it sucks (having a condition toon myself), but its a major technical/bandwidth issue which cant just be solved at this time.

I agree it’s a flaw, but I suspect we wont see any changes until they can work round the stated technical limitations

No one is talking about removing the condition limits for all mobs or anything, but raising the condition cap limit – just for bleeding, confusion and torment – for at most one mob per zone (the world bosses) to something larger than 25, let’s say to 250. Seems reasonable.

Lets put that in perspective imagine we have 10 extra adds in all these fights, would that be a major technical/bandwith issue? Now if we “bundle” those adds into Tequatl, is that now a major technical/bandwidth issue? Because if it is then then this game engine is completely broken.

ArenaNet don’t seem to be interested in fixing this problem.

Essence of Luck - Recipes?

You don’t need a 400 artificer, it requires level 0. Maybe putting it in the Mystic forge would be a good idea though, the same “recipes” could be done there by anyone.

Personally, I would have preferred if they’d just added a “Use all” option to the right click menu for these and other similar items and not added any recipes at all (it would be nice to have an “Use all” for loot bags, for example, open all bags in the stack until you a) run out of bags or b) run out of space).

I understand what they’re doing of course: clicking to reveal the hidden goodies is nice to a point: clicking to open dozens of anything gets tedious.

That is insane alright Ryu, Josh is far and away my favourite ArenaNet member because he says it like it is and actually talks to us as if we were people as opposed to simply towing the party line and telling us about how they’re working on X and are always looking into ways to make X more fun and compelling and a better part of Y and although there are no concrete release dates for X, X is definitely still coming in a future patch and hasn’t gone away.

If he’s being told to shut up because actual communication with the player base is “jeopardising the company” then it bodes ill for the game.

Either way if you’re seeing this then: I love the work you do Josh, please don’t lose faith in yourself because you feel you “overshot” on world two’s difficulty, I and others are still eagerly looking forward to world 3 and 4 and, hopefully, a revamped world 2. Coming out at the same time that people are farming like mad to make ascended weapons probably isn’t helping SAB much so don’t be discouraged.

(Personally, I’d play more if I thought I could get more bubble baubles per day as it was I did the maths and realised that I’d have to buy most of the skins I wanted because I wouldn’t be able to “farm” them.)

Essence of Luck - Recipes?

Recipes? Where are these recipes? I got my artificer above level 450 and there is still no sign of a recipe using Essence of Luck, not even the lowest level ones giving 10. Does it have to drop from somewhere? Do I have to do a level gazillion fractal or super-crappy jumping puzzle to get one as a reward? The Master Craftsman does not sell them, and they don’t appear in the list of recipes. There is no clue in the game. Sorry Anet, this is badly done, no matter how useful or useless the recipes are.

Your crafter automatically knows them, at least my level 400 artificer did.

If you filter on “Essence” or “Luck” then you should see them under refinement IIRC.

If there are alot of players wanting difficult bosses, why don’t i see karka queen being activated nowadays?

The karka queen is not difficult. The process of getting her to spawn is tedious and time consuming because of the requirement to capture and hold 4 seperate camps at the same time. The fact that you generally have to run through an already overrun camp in order to get to her doesn’t help either.

If capturing those four camps was changed to capture the four camps in sequence and then fight the queen then people would do it.

There is some story at least, after all Rox at least was present and talking during the Tequatl fights in the presentation so I’m sure there’s something there (but I’m not betting on the “story” being any more than getting an email from Rox saying “hi, want to kill a dragon?”).

I’d love an series of missions like the ones in Flame and Frost that start with the Tequatl fight.

Sorry to ask but, shouldn’t you have a replica of the live servers to play with internally? We know you have other versions, modified to test stuff but if you are fixing the one we are playing shouldn’t you be working on that server? Implementing changes and fixes that you tested out on a different versions from the client we play wont cause more problems?

Yeah, it’s not that simple. Any of a number of differences between live/release and development/debug environments could be causing the issues. They have access to the live environment, after all, and this problem is in the live environment so they don’t need a replica for that but debugging and testing the live version is more difficult because it’s not a debug environment.

I’ve chased more than my fair share of these issues over the years so I can say that it’s not necessarily a issue in the live servers, it could be an issue in the live client (hence it’s only seen on the live servers because the live client is used there) or most likely some tricky timing issue between the two. Maybe it’s network lag, maybe it’s some further side effect of having thousands of players interacting at once (related to skill lag), but it’s hell to track that kind of issue down and reproduce it based on knowledge of the systems and how they interact alone.

I don’t envy your programmers.
