Your Necro will be very unlucky, this is medium armor.
What I mean is that you fear reward so much you don’t even try to get into that exploring thing. Don’t look at the reward – at the result, look at the process, that was at least the way that worked perfectely for me. You got 5 huge starter zones to explore and you got loads of stuff to explore. Just your KNOWLEDGE you can’t go everywhere makes you reject everything you could do instead.
Oh and about your mumblejumble sentence: My way did at least not make me uselessly burn 200 bucks for crafting mats you can easily gather yourself. And I don’t have to complain about “bad” gamedesign.
(edited by Pirlipat.2479)
Thats grind. Rewarding fun for Progression. should be the other way around.
Crafting gives Exp and gear.
WvW give exp and gear.
Hearts give both.
Events give both.
kills in general give both.
exploring give exp.Crafting requires mats. Mats require a grind or gem exchange. Sorry but I burnt 200$ at launch getting my main to max level with crafting. not doing that again.
Hearts are boring. very quest hub like. Why would anybody want to do another quest hub?
Exploration is limited by level. again gated grind time sinks, for a game that doesnt even have a sub fee.
For me it seems that you look to much at the “reward” for doing something and want to have it done asap and cut off the fun you can have by doing it. As for crafting. I would say the crafting process itself isn’t very interessting (besides cooking) that’s true, but gathering mats never felt like a grind for me. I just collected everything I could find along the way when I was exploring zones. Let the mats lead my way and often enough I found things I would not have enjoyed so much if there was a vista or something else which showed me the place. My main force to lead me through this world is cursiosity. What beyond that tiny hill? What in this cave? Oh look there are strawberrys on the map. I wonder what mobs will guard them.
That way leveling never felt like a grind. It happened and (happens still) often enough, that I do not even recognise that I’m half way through another level.
Awww wrong region otherwise I could bring some cookies. :S
Well like several people said, you can not really compare it to some work in real life. First of all all kids here paid around 40-50 Euro at least to be even able to maw the lawn. Second mawing here is considered to be a fun activity. Like at a party where everyone showing up gets a drink for free or a cookie. You would not give away all 20 free drinks if only 2 or 3 people showed up, I think.
Nearly equal loot is actually a design decision but I like how it’s done here I don’t like having to compete with people about farmingspots or events. If people want to do an event scaled for a higher number of people with only 2 or 3 people they get the pleasure of accomplishing something not everyone can do, but they don’t do a “work”.
I just got a picture in my mind with a huge lawn becoming bigger and bigger the more kids are showing up… poor kids xD
So I pay all the kids $20 each. The original kid comes up to me and says, WTF? this job was worth $80 now? I would have done it myself then! No I say, if you do it yourself it worth $20, if you do it with others its worth more.
Does this make any sense?
Resources in real live are finite, a game can have infinite resources. So if you had alot of money and wanted you lawn job to be done fast and effective you would hire more kids and pay them equally instead of giving your single kid like 20 hours time to do it. In this MMO tasks are designed so they can be usually done alone or in a group. What would you say if there was a theoretical reward for doing something alone but you could never get it done in the required time?
Why do you care what someone else gets in the first place? And what do you mean by “needs help”? I can do some events alone but if someone comes along it gets faster.
Killing mobs is faster if you do it together, so why should I care what someone else gets or be even jealous about it?
In fact it’s a win win situation to do things together.
It seems to depend on the server. Where I play people are not unfriendly but they are not very talkative either. Sometimes you don’t even get a “thx” when you revive someone. You might as well revive a bot, even though they aren’t. And even though I play alot in lower lvl areas there are only a few questions in mapchat. Everything is so silent…
I guess most people assume those who killed themselves in order to get revived didn’t know any better way, but from what I read here I would think they did it this way because they thought it funny. So, no it’s not “hard” to revive anyone (besides maybe reviving while beeing in fight) but reviving some dead npcs is prolly way more boring than finding some people and do some nonsense in this game – like jumping off a cliff to get revived.
So the fun is not jumping down somewhere the fun is beeing together and doing some hilarious things together. But I guess the concept “fun” is pretty hard to explain.

I can pretty much agree on what you said, about feeling forced ect. but I personally don’t want to judge someones motivation to do the healerdaily by suiciding as only looking for effectivity.
In my opinion it rather sounds like a way some people found to be fun. It’s like running naked or transformed into a quaggan in WvW or something else. Ofc you can roll your eyes and say “silly”. But why does everyone think that this is a “wrong” way to do the dailies. How do you know that the daily was intended to be done by reviving npcs. I would rather say it was intended to encourage people to revive each other. So reviving npcs would be the “wrong” way too. So whats your problem with people doing it differently and maybe even have fun doing so?
(edited by Pirlipat.2479)
Why on earth is that dumb? It’s maybe not really effective and maybe a bit too forced, but if it makes people come together it’s an awesome way. And some people do not play dungeons, so why should they not find their way?
Well it’s nice that people are coming together. But it’s a system that’s intended to reward you for just playing the game. It’s not meant to be a puzzle. It’s not even that effective to deliberately do the daily, because you often end up spending more time trying to find different ways to “solve” it, then you do by just playing normally. That’s what is so ironic about it. But, if you are having fun, then more power to you.
I haven’t done this and I would have never thought about it (to uncreative as it seems ;D), but acutally I like it if people find a fun way to play “around” something that is required. I don’t mean exploits to make that clear, rather to find something crazy. I mean this “outrun an centaur”-thing which got posted as a possibility of what to do after becoming lvl80 is not the most sensible variety play this game either.
Why on earth is that dumb? It’s maybe not really effective and maybe a bit too forced, but if it makes people come together it’s an awesome way. And some people do not play dungeons, so why should they not find their way?
Uhm, I think it’s a bit mad to kill your char to gain the daily but on the other hand it’s a really cool way to solve the daily. Why? Because it brings people together. You do something for someone else, you help him and he does the same for you. That’s way better than to revive some npcs who don’t care anyway.
I hope people come up with more creative ideas to solve their dailies and maybe less suicidal ones.
But that way the symmetry should make them beautifull. However I like the way my Asura looks. She would be more than boring with everything perfectly symmetrical. ^^
Oki, I’m gonna link the blog with the symmetrical faces. If you wanna go to the perception of beauty: what is considered to be beautifull is a natural best approximation to symmetry which is still very different from an actual symmetry. Not talking about healthiness…

My RL-ears are also at a slightly different position. I should write my mum a bugreport.
Nah honestly human faces in RL are also never exactely symetric. There were some computer-generated photographs showing absolutely symetrical faces and they look ultimately weird. They posed the ears at slightly different positions to make the faces look more natural, I think.

I don’t like Quaggan very much, but the broomstick is definitely a must-have for everyone who appreciate nonsense and fun items.
Btw when your char is flying around with it, you don’t sit on it but rather hang on the broom like it suddenly came to life.
I thought Charr surfed on the broom. Could have sworn I’ve seen a Charr surfing around on the broom during Halloween.
I believe by “char” he was abbreviating “character”.
I had to read it twice the first time too :P
Yes, sorry for the confusion. My asura does this. I have no idea what other races do with their brooms.

So the lesson is use a system as much as you can until it breaks. If you only use it casually and only if you need it you will get screwed. Thx to make that clear.
I got to add another rather slight detail I like about this patch: the fountain in Lions Arch is back again.
The broom! It’s a really nice fun-item.
It’s like this change is a big surprise lol. Everyone had thier alts parked thier. It probably was the main sorce of Ori in the TP.
May I correct your post? People who play this game like a job had their alt parked there.
I was visiting this node every some days with my main.
I wouldn’t say those things she says have to do with learning disabilities. It’s rather dismissive talking about something the priory has brought up. It rather reveals some sort of competition or even jealousy about an idea by a competing order. So even though she has to admit it might be usefull she doesn’t want to give it full credit.
About the learning disabilities I have no idea, but I think many asura who do not like this strict asuran society leave metrica province and live in lions arch for example. Also I wouldn’t say that asura never work as manual workers but in general their attitude towards their jobs is different. For example there is a dialog in Gendaran-Fields where an asura is working as a farmer. He is talking to someone of another race about doing an experiment in his “lab” and then he recognises his mistake and says something like “oh I mean in my barn.”
So even if they are manual workers they try to make some inventions.
I know in GW1, you could stock up to 3 days worth of dailies and go back to do those old ones when you get the chance. If you tried to get a 4th one, you’ll be asked to either complete one of the older ones or abandoned them in order to take on the new daily. It seemed like an interesting compromise and allowed me to take on the challenges within a reasonable time but still acquire new ones if it interested me.
I like this idea too.
I may have missed a previous mention of this, but I think the word a lot of people in this thread are looking for is: silhouette.
Personal tastes aside, there is very little variation in silhouette, which is just a fact. It’s particularly pronounced in medium armor (all the long coats). There are a few exceptions, but if someone doesn’t like those exceptions, then they’re out of luck.
I do expect the variety to expand. When new armors are introduced, I very much hope that ANet steps away from these signature shapings and gives us more diversity there. I’d like to see sleeker silhouette options for both men and women, a move away from bulky, “puffed” lines, and some simpler, cleaner designs. My personal issue with armor aesthetics in this game is that most everything is way too busy. Especially the high-end stuff.
This. So much of this.
I actually like the trenchcoat-look of most of the medium armors, but when you have little else to choose from over most of the game, it becomes somewhat tedious.
As for light armor, I loathe that as a female, you are pretty much stuck in either looking mostly naked (and flashing all of your assets all the time is just not…*sigh*. I wouldn’t want to choose that for my avatar) or blandly (! I don’t really mind being covered up, but could you make it a little more pretty? Maybe some more pants?) covered from head to toe. I like some of the sleek looks male scholars get – why did they have to remove ~90% of the fabric for the female version? Agh.
More diversity within the armor classes, please!
I agree with this. I do not think the armor in this game is generally “ugly”. Some pieces I don’t like, but that’s something different. In general I love the different textures, patterns etc, but I have to say that I would really appreciate to get more different styles.
Where’s the reward ONLY associated with reaching fractal 40, or 80.
So you think funelling everyone and their dog into fractals is a good idea? People are already complaining about the open world being empty because everyone is running fractals for the ascended jewelry. And you’d add even more exclusive gear to that?
So please, think things through in the context of players abusing the hell out of everything you do before you post suggestions on how things should be done in an MMO. Sad, but true.
You act like this should be the only reward for something. But I think he means a reward among several others. So if you like to get a skin, a title or whatever from this particular part of the content you will try to get it.
Edit: I would like to add that I really like this game. I love to explore do DEs and also play in lower areas. All this is fine, but when it comes to goals like certain skins the game unfortunately has often enough quite alot of rather boring and grindy ways to accquire something.
The same thing is with dungeons. One of the most often used comments in this thread was “run dungeons and all is fine”. What if you don’t like dungeons? I think dungeon runs should not be the only way to gain money. I think the dungeon armors are enough as an reward. Add titles or whatever. But why should dungeons be the main way to make money within this game.
(edited by Pirlipat.2479)
Well, I can understand what the OP is up to. This game is supposed to be wraped around cosmetics. Not only legendaries but also many, many other skins. Many, many skins can only be accquired through the mystic forge which mostly either needs loads of amounts of mats or are random gambling, sometimes both combined.
So grinding and farming those mats is what this game is about for a big deal. But if you are not playing a huge amount of time it will take months to gain the mats or you need to farm money or get it through other ways. For people who do not like fractals it’s even more annoying. So gaining a special skin is in most cases not that you did something special it is that you did repetively the same over and over again, or even more simple you put a lot of money in the tp and bought the whole stuff.
It is not a question if this grind is optional. So to say it is in any game (depending on you goals). It’s rather that the way to obtain something that is often rather boring grind. I think there is a lack of variety with lower level skins as goals for example. Or with goals which are not only related to gain money/gain mats at an insane amount.
What I miss is something that is maybe rather questbased. For example cultural gear can be bought with money. So the “challenge” is to raise enough money. Why is it not wrapped in a questline which recquires you to visit several places and do several tasks for some npc. Or why aren’t there more carfting-recepts with special skins maybe sold by karma-vendors maybe if you finished the map or maybe a bunch of maps. Ofc there are a few, but I would like to see more of these options.

Here’s the real life backpack that was made by someone with more skill in their left pinky than I have in my whole body…
Wow, I don’t like Quaggan and I don’t want a backpack but this is really nicely done. Congratz to the person who made it.
True, if you look at the ears there are some similarities.

Q: How easy it will be to determine the gender of Asura characters? Do female Asura have breasts?
Eric: Asura are mammals and female asura do have mammary glands, however they are not particularly prominent the way they are in humans or norn. For the sake of physical attraction, asura place much more importance on the ears, eyes, and shape of the head (larger head equals larger cranial capacity of course!) than anything else. As for telling the genders apart, female asura tend to have much softer and fine features than males and wear their hair differently.
I vote for dismissing this theory for it’s boringness Asura ordinary mammals just like those… how are they called …humus?… Nah this must not be.

No what I think the TO is up to is that it seems a bit biased to bash people who ask for mounts while on the other hand things like the broom are gladly used because they got another “word”. Instead these things could be seen as some kind of a compromise.
May I add that this thing which is advertised now is actually named “riding broom”?
But as long as it’s not a mount.
You know the thing is, many people get mad if you only use the word “mount”, no matter how you call this broom thing, it does what mounts do. They are there you can sit on it and go around with it,. The only difference is that it has a very limited use. If people call it “a mount” so let them do it. Noone ever said, well this way it would be an ok way for mounts to be implemented, as long as they don’t break immersion to much (like a flying elephant prolly does^^).
But instead people are arguing about words. The thing must not be a mount, under no circumstances. Really I would like to see more options like this broom in the future. And if some call it a mount, who cares?
Why not? …….
Sooo just in case that they one day bring an flying elephant double size of a norn with a 15 min limit and no speed buff everyone will be happy, because thats not a mount at all. Good to know.
(at least if it’s similar to the halloween broom.)
I think it’s this. A broom, non-halloween based, but with the same functionality. Simply a town-clothes toy. One that doesn’t force your face in a rictus grin!
What do you know what I grin about. Nah honestly I was pretty sad because I didn’t like the witch-costume and so didnt’ bother with it, but I didn’t know that it came with a broom!
I think this has not so much to do with honesty as with transparency. I can fully understand that they want to have options for the future like to add mounts if they see it fit or leave them out if they don’t.
However in many cases I would really appriciate to get a bit of a warning or a hint in advance like with this acsended gear or with the limited guesting options. In both cases I doubt this were decisions which were made from one day to another and many people had several expectations on how this game would be and how guesting would work. So it would have been better to lower the expectations on those things if they are not willing/not able to fullfill them. But that’s just my opinion.
Ok, the “broom mount” is a mount (at least for me) but one with a very limited use (at least if it’s similar to the halloween broom.) So it might be a mount but classifying it as a mount would make possibly two groups angry: those who don’t want mounts at all because suddenly there would be mounts and those who want “real” mounts meaning riding things which can be used all over the place and which are not town clothes because the broom is not a “real” mount. So they keep this thing unnamed which is a wise decision in my opinion.
I hope it will be a nice little cosmetic thing to sit on and zip around a bit within safe zones or towns. And if it must not be called a “mount” so the purists don’t get scared away so be it.
(edited by Pirlipat.2479)
I never had this problem in any other game. I am someone who is really much into finding great Skins and other stuff and not only here. And I never felt like my char was becoming less important by using a mount.
In fact the mount was rather something like an accessory which had to match with my clothes and weapons etc.
(edited by Pirlipat.2479)
<—- one of the 3M who likes mounts :p. Honestly everytime someone uses the word “mount” half of the com is jumping up in allert. If there will be mounts one day I will be happy, if not it’s not a huge problem for me. I still don’t get the hatred towards a vanity item which does nothing really bad.
Uhm but you don’t know anything about the price of this broom yet. I for my part would guess it’s about the same price as the whole costume maybe a bit less.
Minis are pointless from that perspective too. Still they are there and I got to say I like them (like nearly all fluff)
This is what you think, but it does not necessarily have to be.^^ I for my part am happy about this “broom mount” even though it’s only town clothes and I would like more options like this one.^^
How does that go against the DEs?
People said already several times that they don’t have to come with higher speed and that don’t have to be used in combat and that they don’t have to fly.
I got one last night and one the day before that. I think I’m getting dyes less often but somehow more rare colors atm. Luck is a strange thing shrugs
That’s not a horse, that’s a sad Charr.
Hence the long face.
:D
Like I said, I doubt there will be horses as mounts anytime soon, or they would have been announced. But there is this riding broom which I consider to be something to sit on and zip around a bit within the towns. I wouldn’t mind other mounts which are this way.
But they are nothing to get mad about.^^
Like I said “it’s not clear” so he can as well be sitting on it, depending on how big the horse is and how big the man is.
It’s really funny that people can’t even stand the slightest hint of a mount not even in a concept-art, which does not mean much to the actual existence of mounts in the game.
