I do not mind so much that the story isn’t advancing fast but I personally mind that it’s not gaining depth either. Everything seems so shallow. You meet those NPCs who lost their belongings but even if you find their stuff you don’t get to know much more about them as they tell you.

Compared to Harry Potter this is like Harry was discribed rumaging endlessly in his aunts house and a month later they publish the next part.

Why can't ALL races join the collages

Pirlipat.2479

STOP – I got to jump in here and stop that nonsense. I consider myself to be very liberal when it comes to an inclusive education for all races but unfortunately this can not work.

The biggest problem we are facing is that metamystics is a subject which holds great danger for the untrained mind. Recent tests with (more or less) volunteering test-subjects revealed the whole danger. Members of different races were exposed to low doses of metamystics. While humans even after a short while showed clear signs of fatigue such as yawning, uncontroled eyerolling, giggling and chatting with other testsubjects, Norn were expressing the uncontrolable desire to consume large amounts of alcoholic liquids, Charr were showing clear signs of unprovoced agression such as destroying the furniture or becoming violent towards the staff. Only silvary were showing a clear interest in this subject but unfortunately the damage was even bigger than with the other races…. Yes Erector, I’m looking at you I recognised you as one of my recent testsubjects.

Based on our results we were even able to interpolate the lethal dosis of metamystics for an untrained mind to around 2 hours nonstop lesson. By that time about 99,9% of the testsubjects would have been literally bored to death. So most of the students would not even be able to survive the entry-test.

To avoid this danger we suggest parents of other races who plan to give their children a proper asuran education to start with low doses of hegelian philosophy combined with some abstracts on quantuminequalities as a night lecture for a little child conintously increasing over time.

But for opening our college-doors to all races unfortunately the time has not come yet.

I will admit to having name prejudice, though. I just won’t waste my time with someone stupidly named. I’m sure I miss out on some nice but challenged folks through that.

Well, you know while you might only wish to be honest some people may find it actually insulting if you speak out that you find them “challenged”. I mean we got freedom of speech but sigh in that case you will have to accept that others speak out they find such an attitude “snobish”. Truth on both sides is not always doing the best.

Hmmmm, even though I like more fantasy-like names better for my own characters I do not really mind more fun-like names. The thing with fun-names is that not everything that someone considers to be hillarious must be really funny for everyone else. I think especially with that kind of names you tell quite alot about your own sense of humor which does not have to be appreciated by everyone. On the other hand I like a fun name which I find funny way more than the 100th Legolas the Great or whatever.

This game has a lot of redeeming qualities. Unfortunately, it has a lot of faults as well. Fortunately for them, the faults are hushed away and not discovered until after you have purchased the game. I think that’s the reason they won’t do free trials.

Yes, I enjoy many of the aspects that makes this so different from other “traditional” MMORPGs. But it lacks many elements of traditional MMOs that define their longevity.

Why am I leveling to 80? What is there to do? Essentially, the same things there were to do at 30, 40, even 10. Go back and do stuff you didn’t do, explore the map, do lame jump-puzzles, make alts, get achievements. Or I could “grind” dungeons that were sold as being lower level (although nigh-impossible at that actual level) to get cosmetic items.

These things are all icing on the cake and should never be sold as the cake itself!

I’ll admit the 30-60 day cycle of new tier gear from the “other MMO” is very worn and tiresome. But I will agree it at least gives you a reason to play. Playing a game just to “have fun” and pass the time is not my idea of a good game. I hated Mindsweeper and I hate Angry Birds today.

Once you feel like you’ve stopped progressing, why are you sill playing? And yes, I define progress in terms of stats, abilities, gear, etc.

IMHO, without changes to end-game in the near future, I’m afraid GW2 will be remembered for great ideas and concepts, but will have the same low-population problems all too-many other games do before taking down servers.

You know people are doing things for different ways of enjoyment. I simply don’t care for a statwise progression. I never did tbh in any game. What I really love about THIS particular game is that it takes that way to play serious that it accepts it as an appropriate way to play games and not as a pathetic sidenote during the statgrind.
And THAT is actually what bothers me about ascended gear because I fear that it will push my way to enjoy games more and more in the background. Just my 2 cent.

Well, maybe my expectations on the story were a bit to high but I have to admit that I’m also kinda disappointed. What I miss the most about the living story is the story part for a big deal.

The lost and found mission is pretty much that: someone lost an object you go search for it dig in the mud and after some time you find it. There is not much fleshed out about that search it’s just … well run around and find it. Ofc you can do other events that are usually taking place in that zone but nothing of that is actually related to the story.

I would love it way more if this search was an actual search for an object where you have to find traces, talk to NPCs that can tell you something like “oh I remember this guy was coming along some days back and I remember him having that goblet. It was his whole pride.” and then you go farther and ask the next person who says “Oh yeah I can remember this guy something must have happened during his journey he had alot of wounds, but a goblet, no I can’t remember.” Then you know that between those two points something must have happened and start to look in that area and find some hints in the snow that lead you to one of those caves where you have to fight a veteran who maybe drops this. Stuff like that you know?

Atm this story is kinda “ok” for me, but unfortunately it is far, far away from beeing awesome. At least for me.

Which mostly leaves two other things which are not that easiely to get. And now it’s mostly not just kill 50 things it’s kill 50 things here and do 5 events there.

But the point for me rather is something else. He stated that he wants players to log in for the sake of the experience (not xp) while dailies are speaking a completely different language. Someone does them for the reward and if he is lucky his gameplay and the daily requirements match but it is not the experience which makes someone log in and do them but the reward people are gaining for doing them and nothing else.

“That’s the only motivation we’ve got.”

cough because jumping 15 times away from a mob without any need or consuming like 25 times food while your buffood is lasting for half an hour is such an incredibly amazing experience.

Really do you know ONE single person who is doing the dailies for the sake of the dailie and not for the laurel it rewards? Would anyone of you do the dailies if they rewarded nothing?

What is your definition of grind?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Pirlipat.2479

Pirlipat.2479

Have you ever wondered why no one ever debates what the definition of “book” is?

Pretty much because we are discussing a game and a definition of the term “book” is not needed in this context. In fact you will have to define the term book for example when speaking in context of bookbinding or editing to distinguish it from other forms like brochures or journals. So you can have several definitions of the term “book”, all given in a different context.

About the word “grind” I would say it is an action in videogames repetively done not only for the sheer pleasure of doing the action itself but in order to gain an expected reward.

Imo it does not matter if the grind is optional, or if it can be fun for some people to grind. Both are highly subjective categories. While grinding can be fun for someone I doubt that person would do what he/she is doing if there was no other reward than the pleasure of the action itself.

If a reward requires repetition without taking the pleasure of that action into it’s main focus but sets the reward as the main goal then I would say that particular reward requires grind and it does not matter if that reward is “needed” by someone or not.

You can however discuss wether grind for optional rewards is better than grind for necessary rewards.

Guesting and Overflow [merged]

I got your idea but since I want guesting to play together with friends and also maybe to do some of those events, which at least my server hasn’t done very often, so a one hour time on whichever server for me is completely useless. I don’t want to guest on 5 different servers for 12 mins each. That’s completely pointless for me. I want to guest as long as I want together with some friends. One hour is very, very short if you spend some time together and you couldn’t reduce it only for a particular zone or event but for the whole server.

I do not want to do serverhopping to go here and there and do it on this or that server but I want to guest over to another server or my friends to come to mine. A one hour limitation would still enable serverhopping, maybe even worse if the serverlimitation isn’t there anymore because instead of 3 events you could maybe try to attend even 4 or 5 events within one hours time, if the spawning times are close to each other.

As for no loot for guests I would say, that sound good on paper but what I don’t like are two things: first of all I’m not ultimately keen on any kind of loot, but it would be pretty bad to be some kind of a second class player if you want to use guesting simply for attending one or two events in a weeks time. Or for your friends to come over to a lower populated server.

The second thing is that I fear that on lower populated servers events wouldn’t be up anymore at all.

Tbh: The idea that I from my point of view like best is to limit chest loot to one per account, event and day.

Edit: @ragscoon: Arg I think I got your idea just now, lol. So you mean that you can switch servers within an one hour time window and after that you have to stay on whichever server you are at the particular moment. I thing that wouldn’t be even necessary, like I said some cooldown on guesting to slow down the process of doing events one after another could be even enough to make guesting unattractive for pure farming.

Guesting and Overflow [merged]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Pirlipat.2479

Pirlipat.2479

Ok, I think I may have a solution for all the guesting issues going on. You see ANet want’s guesting because they are trying to make money out of having people switch servers. They put in place a system where a user from one server can “try out” another server to see if they like it there and if they want to make it a permanent home they buy a server pass from the gem store to transfer over.

The obvious problems this has made is the overflow issues, breaking of the Dragon events and Farming of events from one server to the next in a sense “Server leapfrog event farming”. Getting rid of guesting is not the solution, but if you limit guesting from server to server with an account based timer you can control all the chaos and the loads on the server.

Example: Each Account gets 1 hour of guesting time on any other server only once per day. They can guest to as many servers as they like within one hour on their entire account. The timer would start as soon as they start guesting and will continue even if they log off or switch characters. So if you want to guest to check out another server or play with friends guilds, once you decide to guest you get one hour total.

The hour of guesting can “re-set” much like daily’s do, at a specific time, usually the lowest load times. So say the timer can reset every day at midnight PST. Players in “Guest Mode” should have a countdown timer that they can see so they know how much time they have left before they get pulled back to their own server, it can warn them 10-5min before the time runs out that they will be pulled out of the guest server and back to their server.

I’m not sure if this is a great solution but it’s one that makes sense to me.

Feel free to comment and if you have any other suggestions on how to resolve the issues with guesting, chime in.

P.S. ANet please add a filter to the Auction house so you can sort Armor by Light, Medium or Heavy.

I doubt this is solving anything, but adding a huge problem for players who just come to a server to play together, rp or do whatever. A one hour time to guest is way to short for anyone who wants to play with people but short enough to farm some events.

I said some pages ago that I think a cooldown which should be nearly as long or longer than actual dragon spawn to go back could prevent serverhopping just to farm as well and would leave the guests who come there just to play nearly untouched. Maybe I’m thinking wrong but even an one or two hour timer for every servertransfer, would make the time-advantage you gain by guesting useless and therefore prevent serverhopping just to save time. If there is a mistake in my thinking please correct me.

But I would like to add that whatever solution prevents serverhopping, it will not solve the whole problem as it does not prevent farming from people who belong to their own server.

I am not really sure that guests are the main factor causing an overflow, but then it’s not the normal guesting but the serverhopping to save time. So would a timer of lets say one or two or even three hours on a serverchange prevent from serverhopping while still allowing people to guest over and play together with friends an participate in them. There would be no incentive to constantly change the server and people who just want to guest wouldn’t be excluded.

I never said I agree it should be removed, I simply said I did not like it. I actually don’t like the whole daily system itself at all, but a few of them are worse then others.

Until here your statement was clearing a possible misunderstanding. I was actually under the impression you wanted them to be taken out even though you don’t play anymore because that seemed a reason to quit.

The word native is a bit misleading, because everyone choose a server in the beginning or changed to one. I stayed on a low populated server because it felt wrong to change to a higher populated one only for my own advantage. All players complaining about the “strangers” should be aware that for me this issue can be easily solved simply by moving to a more populated one. Then I’m a “native” and noone could shove me out so easily.

And this will happen if you start to exclude others. Not everyone guesting to another server is just farming one event after another. Noone of you can claim that you own your server.

I do not see how killing rabbits can be considered worse than for example kill 15 mobs from different species or kill 40 mobs. Really they not different from any other mob and even more they are animals who get slaughtered and eaten in real live too.

Noone complained about killing sentient beeings in this game so far (or maybe I overread it) but because it’s cute and fluffy it’s not appropriate anymore? I have way more problems killing skrit or grawl than those rabbits and stuff. My Norn is a hunter and she is definitely no vegetarian. But if you don’t like that quest noone forces you you can still choose something different.

I might be mistaken but I thought you could only loot each chest ones per day with each character, no matter on how many servers you do this event. Form how I understood the discussion it is rather a matter of time-saving which could be indeed solved by syncronising the event spawns if thats possible.

Another thing which could help imo was if people were transfered to a low populated server were the event wasn’t done due to to few people instead to an overflow. That way people could do the event still and the “natives” from that server could gain some extra help so they did not have to guest. I have no idea if that’s technically possible.

What do you mean which ones? Which physical attributes?

The fact they have skin and not scales. Their tail and body’s shape being design after aquatic/swimming mammals. The lack of fins and gills (by all appearances on the latter, at least). Their existence in the arctic (and thus not cold blooded) while having blubber (iirc, that’s said about the northern ones and is part of the cause why they cannot exist in warm waters and why the southern ones can’t in colder waters). All these point to “not fish, not reptile, not amphibian” with hints of “possibly mammal” and I doubt you’d go and call them birds given the lack of wings.

Amphibians neither have scales, amphibians can swimm too, skelk are living in the cold too. Warm-blooded only means that those animals can adjust do higher temperature differences than cold-blooded.

Amphibians have extremeties, they lay eggs – like frogs do together. Amphibians can live on land and in water.

Please don’t tell me that you can’t gear up your alts anymore because you don’t get multiple chests from every event.

On the contrary people playing on lower populated servers might not get get any chest anymore because the events are simply not done anymore, so more people will leave and in the end we will have some overly crowded servers and some dead ones.

And so it does not work for dolphin-makes-mammal because it was only the appearance of dolphins used as an example of how their design process worked not even how they look now. For me they rather look like pegman on two leg and not anywhere near to a dolphin. If they are similar to something for me it’s tadpoles.

Why don’t you guest on low populated servers if the events are lagging. I would suspect that on several servers like mine not every event is fully crowded and even more that there are to few people to even start them at some times.

Excluding guests from loot or the event itself is defeating the purpose of playing together with friends imo. And if someone is playing every event even with only one character that would be quite alot of loot, so I personally can’t accept the argument of people with alts beeing excluded.

In the quote it is said they are amphibious. The second indication for me is that they hatch their eggs and offspring together without having a close connection of mother and child while only some individuals are guarding and raising them. Even with beeings that socially hatch their offspring as a group there is a connection between mother and child, but it doesn’t seem that way with quaggan. There is no indication that the offspring gets fed by the mother.

As for your statement that they got related to dolphins or orca it is only said in the developer statement that

Their original round appearance proved challenging to rig for animation, so they went through a number of iterations, at one point slimming down and becoming more like dolphins. Later they regained some of their weight but retained a beaver-shaped tail from earlier designs.

or

There is also a northern group that is black along the back and white along the belly, much like penguins and orca.

That means their appearance was similar to dolphins at some point, not that they are like dolphins. The same goes for the penguins and orca. Otherwise you could as well say they are birds because penguins got mentioned as well.

You’re closer, but not completely accurate, Astral. And your girlfriend has weird thoughts to think a mammal (I think? That’s the real question about quaggans – wtf are they? They’re compared to orcas and dolphins so I presume they’re egg-laying mammals like platypuses) would have a function akin to an arachnid. o.O

OT:

I think they are not mammals. They lay eggs. I suppose each quaggan lays one egg (from what I heard) but they are hatched alltogether by the community. Some of the mature quaggans become something like hatchers, which seems to be a great honor in their society. So I suppose there is no closer connection between mother and child. Young quaggan, look like normal quaggan but are rather white or without color and live together in a rather hidden cave or something guarded by some mature quaggan who rise and educate them.

Quaggans are intelligent, benign, amphibious beings who originally made their homes in the depths of the Unending Ocean. They have recently moved into the shallower waters along the Tarnished Coast and the Sea of Sorrows, as well as inland to the freshwater lakes.

so you can wear full MF, leech off the party, and get away with it riiightt?

people who wear MF gear or sigil of LUCK in dungeons disgust me. Like, get the hell away from me or my party. I’m not about to spend my time and effort knowing that things could’ve run much faster had you NOT worn MF gear.

Next up, people who have the Sigil of Life also told to “GTFO” from parties since it only helps them heal. And since most heals are self only, it’s not helping the party.

well if those people dotn’ want to play with other people that use sigil of life they have to?

It’s like me telling a good looking girl she should date me because I said so. Ya I mean she shouldn’t discriminate me because I’m a 60 year bold guy or something.

I mean she can do whatever she want. She can date who ever she likes. I mean if she want to date only old guy and not young guy that’s her choice too right?

You got some fingers, you can type can’t you? So just ask and that’s it. And if you want to be 100% sure just find a guild group. I find it sneaky to inspect people without having to tell them and without them having a chance to avoid it. So make it an option to show gear and I’m fine.

Since I can’t do a mentality check with the people I do not want a gearcheck. People can ask so you know their true colors in advance. That’s it for me.

Or are you to shy to ask someone in chat about his/her gear even though you are to keen on knowing it?

For reference, my guild averages 5 players in the evening and peaks at 10 in weekends.

Influence cost: we can – using gold – unlock one mission, maybe not today, but soon.
We are trying to decide which mission will be more “fun”.

Doability: we are checking if our current roster may be able to cope with any single mission (tier 1).
We are considering bolstering our number asking friends and teaming up with other guilds, potentially other guilds who have unlocked a different Guild Mission.
We still don’t know if it would be worth, and if it can be done without losing the fun of playing.

Be carefull you have to unlock Bounty Hunt first which is in the Art of War tree then you can unlock the other missions by upgrading the other tree and so on. You cannot unlock them in a different order from what I understand.

I think the missconception here is that content for more than 5 people, which is probably highly appreciated by many people is linked to guild-content which is also highly appreciated. What they did not take into consideration is that this might be two different groups.

Guilds CAN have like 10-15 or up to 500 people but do not HAVE to. This leads to the problem that small guilds feel set back, because the content aimed at 10 or more people is advertised and designed as "guild"content. And while small guild fall into the guildcategory they fail on the “many people” category. Strange enough they took this into consideration for the missions itself because the small guild could try to get people to help in the open world but did not take it into consideration when calculating the costs for the mission, or at least they aimed at very determined players who speedrun a dungeon 20 times in a row or something.

Sovta, I’m not a hundred percent sure if your post is directed towards my previous statement, but if so I would kindly ask to read my previous posts on this matter. I’m able to agree on the critics about this feature in general but I still do not have to follow every single argument which got brought up here. That has nothing to do with Fanboyism or beeing manipulated easily.

Oh, lol your prejudices are leading you in a quite strange direction. I am myself in a three-people-guild, but I still refuse to jump on the “all big guilds are bad” band-wagon.

Arrogant and mean people are arrogant and mean people no matter what size their guild is having.

Why does everyone say Tybald is dead. The last thing we saw of him was closing the door to lock in the undead. That’s pretty much Gandalf-like. He might have gotten away by a strange coincidence. (Just saying)

Well, stobie, as much as I can understand the problems you are having I don’t like this perception split of big guilds beeing the evil entities and small guilds beeing the good guys. Big guilds may be designed to please different people but that does not necessarily mean people in big guilds are mean arrogant and what else per se.

I agree that the current setup of those mission might support this split in the community, but it’s still the people who make the community beyond everything else.

I want to be smart and logical like an Azura?

I recently did an IQ test, came out with 96(embarrassing ) nowadays we should at least have 114….

I know it sounds stupid, but I have anxieties so little things can make me stressed or upset (it’s crazy I know I know, but at least I can function in society).

I’m pretty artistic though, anywhere I am, even in front of a cash register, I create things with stuff I find in drawers…

I dunno, is creativity still a sign of intelligence? Or are azura just the logical kind of intelligence?

First of all I wouldn’t stress with the test. 96 is quite average. And even though you might not be the most “intelligent” person in the test, it doesn’t tell much about your own abilities. The test has it’s flaws anyway because it’s a strict setup scheme testing abilities (and valueing them) for an industrial world western scheme and doesn’t take things like social intelligence, creativity and other things into consideration. I would rather look at the test as a thing that can show you which are your strengthes among the tested abilities.

As for the races and their abilities: well I would think that Norn are the rather artistic people. They got singers and poets (the skalds) and Eir is a sculpturor for example. But Asura are also known for buildings, gates and golems and even though these are pretty much technical things someone has to give them a proper design. So I would say an artist might not be so much common in the asuran society but as an architect and designer he can be as important as any other asura out there.

Oh and btw experimenting on things like you described sounds pretty Asuran imo.

Ear Contact - A Cautionary Tale

Chrono,

I had no idea that you believed my ears to be majestic. Indeed, considering the previous comment comparing my face, rather unflatteringly in my opinion, to that of a small flying mammal displaying anger, I was inclined to believe you were attempting to make fun of me again.

I would also like to remind you that we were preparing for an important meeting. Ear fondling should not be the first indication of affection for a colleague, and is best left for the privacy of the quiet laboratory, not in public with others from your krewe watching. Your behaviour was inappropriate, and I sought to remind you of this.

I will, however, admit that I am flattered now that I have seen what your intentions were.

Pardon me (I was referencing your unpopular ideas)! Your ideas sound fantastic. This certainly sounds like a way for any guild of any size to be proud of their accomplishments and reasonably attain them.

There’s just one hitch. Since I laid this out, there’s probably a high chance ArenaNet can’t use it.

Possibly, but it’s also possible that they can do something similar and/or be inspired by your ideas. I don’t think there’s any reason they can’t use at least a similar idea from yours, if not the same.

I should explain.

Writers are usually highly discouraged from listening to a fan who has “this idea for a character” or reading fanfiction (even if it’s really good) because you run into a very real legal matter over where the material originated. I don’t know if it falls under “plagiarism” specifically, but you can get in a lot of trouble for even subconsciously winding up using someone else’s idea in your material.

I’d put Gold down that there’s similar provisions in software/game design preventing them from directly taking or in other ways apparently modifying, something submitted as an unsolicited idea.

Nope:

To enable ArenaNet (as defined below) to make use of forum member contributions and suggestions related to its games, including but not limited to any text, ideas, art, bug reports, suggestions of any kind or other contributions (“Contributions”), all such Contributions are hereby assigned with all right, title, and interest, including without limitation all intellectual property rights, to ArenaNet, Inc. and its affiliates (including without limitation NCsoft Corporation, NC Interactive, Inc. and NCsoft Europe Ltd.), successors and assigns (collectively “ArenaNet”) and shall be deemed the property of ArenaNet.

Users agree that no further permission or payment of any kind is necessary to fully exploit Contributions in any medium now known or hereinafter invented throughout the world. ArenaNet hereby grants a limited license back to users to use, distribute, re-publish, and create derivative works from such Contributions solely for non-commercial purposes. Such license to Contributions may be revoked by ArenaNet for any violation of this Code of Conduct….

This is from the user-agreement of the forum. There would be no use at all in having a suggestionsforum if this would only limit your options to implement something because once someone posted it you would have to pay them.

I need help to understand Support response.

That’s propably just a mistake using the wrong word. They prolly wanted to say “not like” instead of “not care for”.

As for the issue itself well did it look differently before? If so write a bug report in the bug section here, otherwise write either in Suggestionforum or if you want to discuss it in the Asuraforum.
