I don’t see what the question if someone plays actively has to do with his or her opinion. For me an argument doesn’t become stronger only because someone claims that he hasn’t logged in for months. On the other hand if I agree with someone why should he suddenly be wrong in my opinion just because he hasn’t played for some time.

When I read that someone quit because xyz then I can either understand that reason or I can’t.

Come to think of it… aren’t we due a weekly BLTC update from our favourite Ebeneezer Charr?

Nope, those usually comes the week when we don’t have patches and I seem to recall that all the Halloween thingies was added last Tuesday.

I could swear they were every week regardless… I also fully expect them to bring back the Halloween themed outfits again (Witch, Thorn, etc.) from previous years, which would be included in a “today” update.

Aren’t they in the shop already? Witch-costumset is there Mad kings too.

Discrimination? (Non-English chat language)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Pirlipat.2479

Pirlipat.2479

But when it comes to being in parties, I do ask those not speaking English to please do so. Communication is bad enough already in parties with out team speak,

That’s a different situation imho. The main purpose of language is communication, so ofc if you are in a party of five people I expect that everyone is using a “tool” aka a language which enables everyone to take part in that communication. But a map-chat is directed to a much wider audience so someone using another language is simply not considering me as audience. I mean if someone is asking a specific question I have no clue about I am not able to join that convo either, but that does not mean people aren’t allowed to talk about that topic.

Edit: I don’t mean that everyone should insist in only talking his or her language I only mean that I don’t mind when someone uses another language for whatever reason.

Discrimination? (Non-English chat language)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Pirlipat.2479

Pirlipat.2479

Well ofc it’s a flaw somehow but the question is how players deal with that flaw. I mean the main flaw is that languages are not separated properly serverwise. It doesn’t help much to be ignorant and to pretend that people from other languages aren’t there. In fact doing so is pretty bad when it comes to organising events and stuff.

The only Option we have is to be tolerant. I mean if someone can’t stand seeing other languages in his/her Chat then just block the people but I can’t see how it is considered to be polite to brag about that in public Chat.

The other thing is I really do like to play MMOs because I can easily have contact to people from different countries and different cultures and that also means they have a different language.

When I see other languages in chat I don’t assume automaticly that this person doesn’t want to have contact only because he/she is talking in a language I don’t understand. It only means that person wants to use his/her language at that moment for whatever reason. So why should care?

Discrimination? (Non-English chat language)

Pirlipat.2479

However, if someone has his game client in English, he should be aware that the filter option assigns him an implicit “English” tag to his chat messages, so he should really write in English as well. Doing otherwise is not polite. If I change my game client to English, which I do in rare cases, I also switch my chat language to English of course.

But then -following your standards of politeness- I playing with a german client – would have to write german all the time too – even when I choose an english server at the beginning, and even when the majority of the map is talking in english. That doesn’t make sense for me.

It is said to do so, or to be more clear it’s said to priorize the languge of the server you choose. But often enough it’s not the case. Sometimes I get mixed with loads of French speaking people and I understand only bits of that language. But I never turn that filter on. Why should I pretend those people aren’t there?

Discrimination? (Non-English chat language)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Pirlipat.2479

Pirlipat.2479

Well it’s not the first discussion about this issue. I am german playing with a german client on (before megaserver) an english speaking server. The megaserver still mixes everyone with everyone, so if someone is speaking german he might have an english client but maybe he is from a german server. If I was only allowed to talk in my client language I had to talk german all the time even when I wouldn’t be understood.

The client-language has nothing to do on which language server this person was before megaserver. I am not entirely happy the megaserver mixes the langauges but that’s not the players fault.

Next Thing is: I am not asking german questions but if someone is asking in german I will answer in german and I don’t care about my language settings.

Well, when I started I was new to the game too and I loved the old leveling experience. So when they say it was not good enough and that it had to be changed in the way it is now they say at the same time that my experience doesn’t matter. Wow thanks alot you told me this.

Not what they’re saying at all. They’re saying they’ve run tests and not enough people play past the starting levels. They start playing, they get a few levels in and stop playing. That’s what they found through testing.

Now this game survives or doesn’t on it’s ability to attract new people. Why? Because all games have natural attrition.

If you want to take this personally, go right ahead, but business decisions aren’t personal. The fact is (unless Anet is lying which I don’t believe) that testing and experience and metrics showed that too many people didn’t like the leveling experience.

My point to be more precise. People are giving Feedback. What you are doing is constantly telling People that their Feedback doesn’t matter and that they should shut up cause A-Net is all knowing and you like it oh and your wife does too. It not your Business to speak for A-Net. They can perfectely do this for themselves you are not in Charge. Give your own feedback but talking for them is not your Business.

Gating skills with levels was always a game mechanic […]

It’s only my personal opinion but what I loved when I started this game was exactely that leveling just happened while you tried out things. Now you level to become able to try out things. For me it shifted the focus and tbh it sounds alot like “hey I swung a sword, I swung a sword again.”

But anyway I’m only glad I got several alts and whenever I plan to make another one I got my level-up scrolls which allow me to skip alot of the boring process. I just think it’s sad for newcomers.

Btw I never farmed keys.^^

"Do what now?" or "Why I'm not good at this game"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Pirlipat.2479

Pirlipat.2479

I rather tried to counter arguments like “When I come home from work I don’t want to read an enzyclopaedia about the game.” I think not many people want to read difficult manuals about a game (ofc there are always a few, who know every theoretical aspect), but that’s not only way things can be taught. Learning stuff can be fun if things are taught in an entertaining satisfying way.

"Do what now?" or "Why I'm not good at this game"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Pirlipat.2479

Just a few thoughts from me. I think many posts in this thread focus to much on a theoretical learning. I personally think that it is way more important to teach people strategies how to solve problems. To exagerate it a bit: you dont need to know what a combo is, you have to know how to produce one and which is important in which situation.

That way learning should teach people how to do things how it is usefull and why it is good to use it. It should teach strategies. by encouraging someone to experiment with that strategy. But more important from that point on you should have to use that strategy from time to time to memorize it until it becomes a part of your problemsolving tools. And if this strategy is successfull it feels rewarding because it helps you to solve problems. Good tutorials shouldn’t funnel people into one way of gameplay but they should provide them a variety of tools to cope with the gameplay world.

I think tons of written tutorials don’t help to improve, even though they should be somewhere as a knowledge base.

Nightmare court

in Sylvari

Posted by: Pirlipat.2479

Pirlipat.2479

What I mean is that the nightmare and the dream are two sides of the same medal. Silvary have the choice between beeing good and bad. But the real evil is falling apart from the connection of all Silvary entirely be it nightmare or dream, because that turns them into “minions” (beeings that have no free will). The soundless only don’t “hear” the connection anymore but it is still there somehow.

So the dream can be twisted and turned into something bad but in the end it shields the Silvary from something that would break their free will.

norn spell caster necro or mesmer?

in Norn

Posted by: Pirlipat.2479

Pirlipat.2479

Tbh, I would choose necro. For me a necro fits the shaman type very well. I got a norn mesmer but I never leveled her because I never could find a way to think out how and why she is using her magic in a “nornish” way. But in the end it’s your own personal decission.

Btw it would be great to hear some ideas how people think that the mesmer fit into the norn culture or whats the idea behind their norn mesmer. Maybe I can warm to mine a bit more.

What prestige? Nobody looks at another player who obtained an LS item and thinks “oh wow, that guy was there at the event, how awesome” At best, you’ll have people think “oh that’s a nice skin” and that’s it. lol prestige, please.

Or in the case of that specific backpiece skin (sclerite) : “Oh god, who the hell would wear such an ugly thing?” […]

Well, what I loved most about the “old” Lions Arch was that it looked like it was actually built by it’s inhabitants and not like something invented from a city planner. I loved that you had pretty easily achievable gear and that everyone was on par – A-Net brought Ascended
I loved the look of my Asura -A-Net somehow changed the graphic and now she looks weired
I loved Lions Arch (literaly everything) – A-Net destroyed it
I loved my Server-Community – A-Net brought the Megaserver.

I guess I’m becoming a bit paranoid but I kinda started to fear to like something in this game because the next moment it can be gone anyways.

Edit: I don’t want to be overly negative, I still like the game but those changes are becoming slightly annoying.
