Rangers are the worst class on dungeons by far. Your part dies and you lose 50% of your damage. Yes you can still solo dungeons without pets because the AI is dumb and its just about remembering patterns.

My pets don’t die vs lupicus and I reflect 50k dmg with [Whirling Defense]. I also prevent grub spawn at transition with a well timed pet swap after the melee pet takes grub aggro at phase 1/2 transition. For many groups, ranger is a great Ruined City of Arah profession (protection / fury / healing / reviving / grub prevention / reflection / invuln / combo fields).

Because you can do decent in some dungeons it doesnt make the ranger good, an example is how bad rangers are in CoE against alpha. Literally all the pet needs is to gain invulnability when the player dodges to make the pet damage viable in dungeons and fix sword auto attack so you can move around your target while attacking and ranger will be in a very good place.

Just wanted to give you one final shout out. I’m loving this build now. Was roaming yesterday and stumbled on 3 enemies trying to take our SE supply camp. I was able to keep all 3 of them busy while contesting the camp for several minutes until allies arrived to kick them out. And I managed to kill one of them in the process during the 1v3.

Now that I’m getting a feel for it, I’ll probably swap the 10 points in Nature Magic over to the precision line in order to get the extra 30% crit damage for the pet. But I’m having fun on the Ranger again! Cheers mate.

Ive been thinking of how incorporate that trait into the build and imho going 20 wilderness and dropping bark skin is better than losing 43% duration to regen and 7 secs of regen every 30 secs from the 5 point trait alone. Below 4,500 health bark skin is only active since i have 18,000 health and usually if i dip that low i will dodge and troll unguent will take me above that np. I rather have more passive buffer than a trait that works below 25% health.

Just a few questions for someone who has never really given the Ranger much of a chance….

I have spent most of my time in GW2 as a D/D Ele and though I love the class, the Ranger has been the one thorn in my side. I don’t care what others might say, Rangers still worry me if they know what they are doing. With that being said, how well do you do against those D/D Ele’s? I run a 0/10/0/30/30 build using a combo of berserker, knight, and valk gear.

Also, you said it took you 30 hours to level to 80, can I ask for your guidance on how you were able to do this and if you have some general leveling tips? I’ve been looking for a fun alt to play and so far I’ve leveled up a Guardian, Thief, Warrior, and Mesmer all to about level 30+. They now don’t ever get played anymore… lol.

D/D Ele won’t kill me, if they play good they won’t die and if they play bad and I time my poison they will die. The only Ranger build that gives Ele trouble is a condi spec with traps, you have to use traps not just weapon condi attacks and even then the Ele has the upper hand. Then again I have 1,500 hours on my Ele since its my main, I was playing DD Ele since Beta and rode the whole “Ele is the worst class in the game train” laughing until the nerfs started coming in due to someone making DD popular in sPvP after the staff bunker nerf.

As for leveling I have 6 80’s and Ranger was my 6th so a lot of it comes down to the fact I have a system for myself so I can get 100% map completion really fast on my toons. Even then Ranger is super easy to level and probably the best open world solo class specially after this last patch. Basically you need 3 pets for your leveling needs.
A feline (Jaguar preferred). This is your ST pet for insane dps.
A drake (Marsh one I think F2 is lightning). This is your AoE and your tank ST pet if in high level areas.
A devourer. This is your super duper tank pet that makes bunker guards look like wimps. Use this to kill champs if you want to fool around.

You want a sword (turn off auto attack for it) and a torch. For your 2nd weapon I suggest a shortbow for rare uses. Utility will be troll unguent for regular stuff or healing spring against lots of condis or if you are trying to kill a champ so you can put it on your pet. You want the speed signet, the passive healing signet, and Sic Em. You want rampage as one also.
Your first 10 points will be in beastmaster and your 2nd 10 in your crit line for 30% crit damage for your pet. 3rd 10 points is in beastmaster again for bleed on crit for your pet and 4th 10 points in your crit line again for crit = heals on your pet. You basically want to keep buffing your pet into a killing machine. 5 points in wilderness for passive endurance regen is optional too.
For leveling i go from map to map doing map completion. Ill do 50% of a 1-15 map then go to another 1-15 map and get 100% then return and finish the map. Then i move to a 15-25 map do 50% of it then go to another 15-25 map finish then come back. This is because i will usually be underlevled due to completing maps too quickly. By level 40 you can go to the hinterlands for the centaur event and stock up on AoE to tag stuff and get in a grp. If the ppl are doing it right and fail the even at the end for a 5 min respawn for quick exp. With a centaur slay potion, a 15% food buff, a guild buff, a guild banner buff, and add a exp token if you got 1 you can do 40-50 in 2 hours and 50-60 in 4 hours. At that point you can keep doing maps or craft to 80. Ele and ranger are the only 2 toons ive leveled to 80 with 0 crafting and event farming. My other 4 toons i did the centaur event and crafted the last 20 levels.

risk/reward debunked by ranger melee/range

Range weapons reward is being able to do damage from range while the melee enemy has to close that range while most likely doing no damage. You have CC and swiftness to increase the length of time before the enemy reaches you, at that point you should have chipped away enough health and maybe made them use some cool downs to have the fight in your favor. Range weapons should not give you more survive ability against the enemy if the enemy managed to reached you after you used your CDs.

ATM most ranged weapons do about 50% of the damage melee weapons do and IMHO its balanced. If you can’t properly kite stay away from ranged builds.

TU is superior not only on the fact that it provides more HPS but on the fact that for those 10 seconds you will most likely be at 100% HP at the last tic and have to live for 15 seconds before you can heal again. Basically they have 15 seconds to kill you.
HoA they have 20 seconds to kill you before its up, for this sole reason TU is superior.

Another bonus is that you can use TU to heal your pet even if you are at 100% and if they jump you, your TU is healing you keeping yourself at 100%. HaO you can’t do that.

I don’t know why people use unguent. Taking cooldown into consideration, Heal as one and unguent heal for about the same, unguent being slightly better.

However, unguent will not protect against a burst, it can be negated by poison (heal as one too, but you have more control), it may end up healing nothing because the HP is already full. Is there any reason unguent is better?
Like morale (the enemy will see your HP at constant 100% hp and will freak)?

Heal as one is pretty bad. 1st Troll Ungent provides more healing per minute than Heal as One. You are right about the poison but if you can’t remove poison and need to heal then HAO will be cut by 33% while TU will get cut at the beggining and then poison could get removed in the middle of the ticks so tbh pros and cons for both.
Lastly you use TU at higher health levels then then regular heals. If its slow damage you use TU at like 30%-40%. If its high damage you use it at 70%-80% you don’t use when your almost dead. TU takes a bit more thinking to use then regular heal spells.

  1. and #2 do less DPS than SB auto attack even before bleeding. #3 is not worth the Vuln you gain for the damage you lose. #4 KB is useful if the other attacks did anything good so why KB (which is countered by stability and teleports) when you can swap to a melee weapon. #5 is the only good skill on LB but its such a high CD, you can move out of it and you are stuck with bad skills for the rest of the weapon swap CD.

1# on max range is awesome in any bigger fight, where your target don’t see you are hitting him to avoid arrows.
Before saying anything about 2# dmg, better calculate it.
3# is very worth it. You can use it between autoattacks without losing anything.
4# KD has great range if you use it in melee. It’s one of the easiest-to-use skills to knock enemies from cliffs/walls and can even be used to throw them down from walls when you are under them.
5# isn’t really good against players, but it’s range is great to clear siege from walls and cripple is very useful in ZvZ.

LB is NOT as good as SB and needs buff, but it has its uses and I have no problems to run with it as “main” weapon, even in duels (GS on swap).
But yeah, in this build it won’t work. For LB to be nice you need 30 points in MM (piercing + range) and imo 25 in skirm for +10% flanking dmg.

I think I need to finally make some movie with all the WvW footage I have, instead of repeating myself over and over again…

I’m talking about WvW only.

  1. is so easy to avoid by simple movement at max range, its pretty bad.
  2. does less damage, ive done the math and its a bad skill.
  3. is not worth it if you are alone, the 10% damage does not make up the damage loss.
  4. KB is great and all but GS #4 > LB #4 by far.
  5. Like i said, only good skill.

It’s an inferior ranged weapon compared to SB. No reason to weapon swap to it unlike other classes with multiple ranged weapons.

SB + GS or S/D is a great weapon option, stay away from LB. I know people can get kills with LB but you can also get kills with just the pet while you kite people around but that doesn’t make it optimal.

Ran this tonight in WvW and was pretty pleased. I was routinely tying up groups of 2-4. I seem to run into trouble with conditions fairly often though. Considering seeing if the lemongrass soup helps.

Great for solo play. But I’m still feeling a bit lacking in terms of what I bring to a group. Although that’s more of a ranger problem and not a problem specific to this build.

Getting a bit bored of this accusation now. A good Ranger brings plenty to the group, particularly in WvW.

There’s a solid counter argument to this, but we shouldn’t derail Puandro’s thread. Happy to discuss with you in PMs if you like though.

Back at Puandro, have you attempted using healing spring instead of troll unguent and then leaping through it as much as possible to boost your heals? After running this last night, I’m wondering if that might actually be a better way to go. Although troll unguent is definitely amazing, the condi removal on healing spring seems like it would help quite a bit. Thoughts?

I started with healing spring but originally to counter condis and leap through since you can do 3 leaps through it before it runs out but most of the time condos are not a problem. The problem is that people like to AoE on top of it at times. Another thing is that troll ungent will keep you at full health for 10 seconds and you have to stay alive for 15 seconds, healing spring will usually not keep you topped off even with leaps.
This is of course 1vX, 1v1 you rarely have to use your heal at all or even off cool down back to back

The question I have to ask you is: Even with this level of skill, do you think that pets are in a good place? Or do you feel that they still need improving with the AI, or movement, or anything else?

Pet AI is pretty good I’ve never had issues with it doing what I want. Pets still have issues with attacking people who are running away with swiftness or speed signet and that needs to be fixed. Personally I think the toughness/vitality buff in the last patch should had been PvE only and improved more in PvE. F2 still need to be activate waaaay faster and there is still a bug where if you use F2 as soon as you swap it won’t target your enemy.

I’m running a combination of this build along with the Catmaster build. I’m loving the mobility of GS & Sword/Dagger. Instead of QZ, I’m running Sick ‘em. Melandru/lemongrass over Dwayna. I find that I have zero trouble keeping my health up even with the lower healing power, and I think it’s the extra toughness & condition duration reduction.

Timing the very good pet burst along with my own mini burst with GS, and I’m finding that I’m getting that killing speed that I’ve been looking for along with the survivability to solo effectively.

So you keep Superior Sharpening Stone but drop Mango Pie?
As Puandro already stated, we have to keep the regeneration. And without Rune of Dwayna you loose a lot of regen – that is right.

But Puandro, I want to ask you some questions about healing power:
1.) How does it scale? E.g. it is clear to me, that it enhances Troll Unguent alot, but whats with Natural Healing (Your pets have natural health regeneration) – does HP pushes it aswell?
2.) Other sources of continous healing would be Mango Pie. Does the Mango Pie healing scales with HP aswell? And how substantial is the boost from Signet of the Wild? How much health you gain from Signet of the Wild btw, hps wise?
3.) last but not least you gain regen from Rejuvenation – I can perfectly understand, that this one is important. But if I drop Dwayna and take Melandru instead, is it the wrong desicion? How does Dwayna work: do you get regen only if you trigger Troll Unguent, or does it apply for each tick (would be op I guess) ??

The BM trait regen uses pets Heal Power not yours, its scaling is pretty bad too so don’t bother with the trait that gives the pet more healing power. Mango pies don’t scale with heal power but they scale with WvW heal bonus. The signet scales pretty well with healing power and regeneration scales pretty well too. If you drop mango pies which is about 88 HP/s and then drop your regen uptime to 1/3 of what it is then it will def hurt you.

I debated a lot between melandru and lemongrass or dwayna and mango lies and eventually went with more regen. Its something I want to try in the future.

IMHO in PvE 30 BM is a must, 15 nature magic is debate able but 30 BM will increase your overall damage contribution more than anything else.

Assassin, yesterday I got Naga Fang which comes with Sup. sigil of Ice. Though it rarely procc’d it was helpful. I imagine that Freeze would be helpful if proccing on every weapon change and lasting twice as long as the Ice sigil.

I started using Quickening Zephyr, but it was really hard to give up Signet of Stone.

Still working to get all geared up, but am impressed with it atm. Really missing my short bow and attacking from range, but PVE mobs die so fast I will get used to it.

Sword+Dagger is new experience as is fighting in melee range.

Puandro, want to share some thoughts with you on this matter:
Since you dodge ALOT and gain Protection frequently, wouldn’t it be worth it to push boon duration, so you get alot more defensive and your pet aswell?
If you use 2x ‘Superior Rune of the Monk’ and 4x ’ Superior Rune of Altruism’ that would make 30% Boonduration. With your alternative way to trait, you would go 15pt in Nature Magic that would make another 15%.

Maybe but it seems to me you are slowly getting rid of regen in your build and its going to hurt. Also protection procs when you start the dodge not when you end so you lose .75 secs of potential protection since you are dodging and can’t be hit.

30 hours? You must have a ton of money because crafting is the only way to even level that quickly. It took me 3 days to get to level 30 on one character, and thats from doing every races zones, rinse and repeat. lol.

I use energy sigils so i cant use hydromancy. Nothing has more evades than S/D but other weapon combos are viable but not with cleric gear, you need Apothecary for that.

Really watched your Video twice now, I am really impressed by your awareness, although you did some very minor mistakes, I think you can hardly play a ranger better.

Questions I have relating to the mesmer and thief fights:
Does our pet traces them or attackes always the right one? If it would be so, I think mesmers would be really easy to target, since your pet always leads you the right way
If this is true, is it the same with thiefes? Why didn’t you always used our GS #4 when the thief stealthed? Did you recognize which weapon he wears? Because their backstabs are feared…
Another Question about Masters Bond: is it really worth it? I didnt recognize much of a difference, but I could be wrong here. My idea would be, pick instead comanding voice and/or Shout Mastery so you could switch to a Krytarian Drakehound with Immobilize on F2, and ’Sic’em’ … well I dont know if it is worth it but from my analysis of your footage I would say, that the Jaguar has a hard time hitting things. If he really lands an attack he hits like a truck – but I feel that this is a general problem to rangers, we have so few Immobilizes and so on, that wouldn’t really damage our class but since pets cant run in circles and have hard times hitting stuff, immos really could turn a fight…
whats your opionion on this?

I have been playing ranger for a few days in WvW and it took me like 30 hours to level to 80 so I don’t have much experience with ranger compared to my other classes but i am very knowledgeable on every other classes so i know how to counter it. Im sure i can still improve a whole lot more.

If you send your pet to attack and they stealth, ect you don’t have to worry about telling your pet to attack the real one after they come out of stealth so yes it kinda does help if you are not very experienced when fighting mesmers but i have 0 problems finding the real one. The only time i won;t target the real one instantly is if they port behind me and i need to turn my camera. I don’t always use GS #4 for BS mainly because if im at full health 1 BS isn’t going to kill me 1v1. Sometimes i use it just no KB them and let my pet land hits.

Masters Bond is very awesome since at 25 stacks thats 200 more stat points for your pet, considering 30 BM is 300 points and that makes a huge diff another 200 is really nice. If im in melee my pet lands most of it attacks. I cut a lot of the clips where people went full melee vs me and i drop people very quickly due to the jaguar and my sword Auto Attack giving it might. Also every time the cat crits it lands a 5 second bleed which is very nice extra dps. Dogs do less damage and i see them more of a CC pet if you decide to use ranged weapons or traps.

Thank you for your answers so far.

There is a trait (Agility training) which would speed your pet up to 30%. Will it add to the effect of SoTH or will it simply overwrite these 25% movement speed.

Do you use other Utility skills? Like you already mentioned ‘sic ’em’? Or do you stay with your combination.
Why dont you pop SotW sometimes? Is the active-effect that bad?

I prefer the passives over the actives. I do sometimes swap utilities but very rarely. Also the speed doesn’t stack the highest one always overwrites the lower ones.

Hey Puandro,

first off, really impressed me the way you play your ranger. I have to overwhelm you with some questions though – if you dont mind
1.) Why do you use this trait (Nature’s Bounty Regeneration you apply lasts 33% longer)
I rarely understand for what is it good for? Because the only source of regen I see is the minor trait with 75%. I think I miss something substantial though

2.) From my understanding your dmg comes from your pet – how comes, that your pet is sooo tanky, I mean 30 points in BM ofc, but mine dies much quicker.
So you only want to cripple your foe and slow him down, so your pet can deal DMG?
Or do you try to pull out some nice dmg strength-based, since your crit rate is really low?

3.) You deeply invest into healing power and strength. Healing power is used for Troll Unguent, Signet of the Wild and the regen from Rejuvenation?? And linked to this, since you have that much steady healing, don’t you need a condition removal in any place??

4.) You pulled off a nice moving combo with GS and S. But I didnt quite get how you did this. First off you Swoop. Secondly you turned and used Hornet Sting, turned again and used Monarch’s Leap? How do you trigger that movement-combo exactly?

5.) For your bufffood you use another source of continous healing. Wouldn’t it be worth it to go with ‘Bowl of Lemongrass Poultry Soup’ ? Since you lack a bit of condition removal.

6.) Last but not least, please tell me, how can you dish out more DMG? As you allready mentioned, drop 10 from Nature Magic – would you pick ‘Pets Prowess’ from 10 in Skirmishing instead?
And furthermore I do not quite understand the mechanics of Jaguar and stealth. He seems to deal significantly more DMG while in stealth (why)? And why dont you ever pop ‘Sigil of the Hunt’ Is the DMG-Output that bad? I didnt quite understand this sigil.

The trait gives regen and the runes i use gives regen when i get hit and when i use my heal, it does make a noticeable difference if you want to have high up time regen without having to sit inside Healing Spring for Perma Regen.

30 Point Trait gives HUGE regen to your pet and a small one for yourself, then the signet also heals your pet, and if you use your heal it will give regen to your pet for a few seconds. Also i sometimes use F2 when it gets low so they cant attack it and i can use my Heal once its up. Masters bond also makes a difference.

I can usually outlive most condition users. Worst case scenario you can run away and swap to Healing Spring and signet of renewal, i dont like Empathy Bond because it can slow my pet if it transfer cripple/chill/weakness ect.

First part of Sword #2 will send you away from your target, then un-select your target and turn around and use #2 again and you will leap again, make sure you have auto target off in the options.

Yes condition reduction food is also an option.

Yes you can pick up 30% on crit damage for your pet if you won;t miss the uptime on regen. When the Jaguar stealth’s every attack while in stealth will crit, and also attacks from stealth won’t bring it out of stealth like thiefs stealth. This allows you to spike. You could also mix it in with Sic ‘Em. The reason i don’t use my signet is because the pet will lose its speed and make it really hard to land an attack vs kiting enemies so i just use Bash from Gs to boost it next attack.

Depends, BP being able to be used on the move while SR last longer its a huge AoE HERE target and if you leave early you lose stealth.

Spent 3 hours failing about 7-8 grenth events in 3 servers always failing at the spider one. Pretty sure my Berserker Ele can take more hits than the wimpy keeper.

Condi is higher damage potential but if they have cleansing its not that great, if you face a group with grp cleansing then its also pretty bad. ATM im sticking with Cleric and its working fine.

What I find interesting re. most of the Ranger videos I’ve seen where they are having “success” (i.e. not being a 30 second badge) in WvW they are running a melee build (sword/dagger, axe/torch, GS for survival/escape, etc). Few, if any, solo roaming rangers are running sbow or lbow as their primary weapon. Is this just because of play style preference of the folks in the vid, or are xbow rangers really that kitten solo roaming WvW? Lvl 62 at the moment, so learning what I can before I can gear for dominance, LOL.

SB is a great weapon and it has some good defensive skills but once forced in melee might as well bust a melee weapon for higher damage and more defense which sword/X and GS are good for.

No class is hard to play, the skill comes from having to counter other classes properly and react against the opponent. sPvP is also no place to test things as 99% of the people there aren’t very good to begin with.

Soldier > Sentinel.

You can’t do damage if you’re dead.

No argument there but a soldier/knight mix is superior to sentinel gear. Its what I used to run but I’ve replaced most of my soldier gear with berserker now, still no issues.

One guardian with that new sentinel’s gear with traited symbols, hammer, signet of judgement and AH. That means permanent protection, permanent 10% damage reduction (so it’s 43% overall) and ~2000 toughness. That’s like 87% damage reduction with more than 25,000 health points, immunity to conditions (soldier’s rune, pure of voice, purity) and you still hit like a truck with might blow.

tl;dr; please nerf guardians anet.

Soldier > Sentinel.

Definately going to try this when I can. Been trying Faux Sheaux’s condition verion of this build which I’ve enjoyed, but honestly I am a DD person not a condition damage person, and I deeply miss having a GS with me as I became so used to having it with my usual SB / GS knights build.

This looks a lot of fun though. Ideally I’ve love a regen bunker build that wasnt so pet dependant, but I cant see a way to make it work with enough DPS, not to mention the BM traitline gives 300 regen.

Yah im a fan of the GS.

Very nice, and I’m going to give this a whirl, I think. But what do you do for condition removal? It seems you have none!

I used to run Healing Spring but i found out i ddint really need the condi removal.

Ive been using a build that really looks like this for some time. i just changed the 10 traits from 4th line to second so my pet can deal a little more damage ^^

I was wondering usually i dont see rangers using Sick ’Em… now its only 40 sec CD and when u combo jaguar F2 + Sick ’Em its just soo much damage i love it.
what do u think about it?

BTW Mesmer utility is the only reason they are brought for groups because they are the lowest dps class in dungeons ATM. But between sword boon removal, TW, reflect, focus pull ect they are nice but never bring more than 1.

Basically people can live long with cleric gear because toughness lowers the damage you take and healing power increases your healing amount.

Vitality is just a buffer.

Basically cleric gear and magi heal the same. But cleric has toughness so it reduces the damage you take so its easier to heal it. Magi has more health but it doesn’t matter if you can’t heal yourself to 100%.

Example let’s say you can heal yourself for 500 health a second. The enemy does 1000 damage a second. Would you rather increase your health from 16,000 to 22,000 or decrease the enemy’s damage from 1,000 to 700.

As i was explaining in another board, Apothecary is good but on T1 servers (NA) a lot of people have been using Melandru with -40% condi food to counter all the aoe condis out there so you do virtually no damage against them. Also with this build i try to do everything to make my pet do as much damage, crippling/poison/CC ect.
