This Thread and game is full of people saying they have no problem responding to the burst damage a thief or any of the classes can pull off.
YOUR problem is you think that just because YOU are not fast enough to respond to it that the game is some how flawed. YOU feel the devs should tailor the game to fit YOUR needs or that the devs some how owe YOU something.
Truth of the matter is no one owes you anything, and honestly no one gives a flying kitten what you think about hotjoin 8s. Which as already stated is not the balancing point for this game.
I for one am glad that Anet is one of the few gaming companies out there that doesn’t listen to the local minority and their cry for more “balance”. I will agree there will always be minor balance needed as the meta of the game evolves over time, but to try and defend the fact that you are simply not fast enough to respond to the burst damage in the game when there ARE already plenty of counters for it just proves that you are nothing more then a bad player crying that you can’t figure out how to play the game.

Poor design repeated in every mmo that has ever had a thief class. Why is that? It feels like developers are so uninspired on how to make a thief class with out it being Op as kitten.

On topic high level play the backstab build on the thief is trash and no competitive player would ever use it over pistol whip.
What you are seeing in this thread is people playing 8s and crying about the balance of the game when it is not really balanced for that type of play.
Any thief that goes that much into glass cannon is gonna get destroyed by a decent player that knows what the kitten he is doing. It is easy to predict/counter/avoid. The ONLY time you see that build is when people go pub stomping in 8s.

Congrats. you died from a very difficult combo to pull off.
difficult to pull off?!? Seriously, it’s not that hard. You want a difficult combo, try RTL/updraft/ring of fire/Awave/Tooth/Pheonix/Firegrab, and that combo is harder to land, requires 2-3x the button presses, and inflicts only a fraction of the damage.
Also, this player specced strictly for Glass cannon.
Obi has already stated he was NOT specced as a glass cannon, although he was not fully specced into toughness (as an ele, if you spec all the way into toughness/vitality you do ZERO damage and can barely kill anyone, I know cause I run that spec.)
He was just out played. It happens. Get over it and move on and work with your team as well…a team.
How is one “outplayed” when they’re killed in 3 hits they can’t even see cause the thief doesn’t render until after the combo is finished?
This combo takes advantage of a player not being aware of their surroundings and naivety into thinking they are safe when you are NEVER safe when in PVP.
What if one is VERY aware, but otherwise engaged with another enemy? Anytime a player rolling a thief with this spec tells others “L2P, this is fine” they always assume the victim was just twiddling their thumbs on a capture point with 3 utility stunbreaks all off cooldown.
Seriously. The backstab combo is super-cheap. 1v1 it can be often avoided through clever movement/dodging/stunbreak, but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s the cheesiest combo currently in the game. I’m not even calling for it to be nerfed (I rarely die to this as I’m fully tank/support specced on my Ele), but I suspect it eventually will be cause it’s a lame, gimmicky, one-trick pony spec and doesn’t belong. Only thieves using the spec seem to disagree.
You really need to learn the definition of what “One Shot” is.
Means you die in one shot. The thief does not One Shot someone. It takes two backstabs to kill someone in sPVP along with a cloak and dagger in order to make them vulnerable. The damage feedback log that pops up when you die? That thing just shows you how much damage a skill did. Not how many times you were hit with it.
And to point out..I was talking about the thief being glass cannon not the player that died to him. Learn reading comprehension please.
Also to point out…he obviously wasn’t watching his HUD or he would have seen his health drop from the initial steal or he would have known to dodge (if the thief specced for stealth on steal which lowers his damage output ratio).
You also know that the log shows the number of times you were hit with a skill right? Also, 2 backstabs? ROFL…learn to combo. basilisk venom, C/D, Steal, BS and end it with a HS if they’re still up.

No, I don’t see the difference because that is not what is happening. One shotting anyone, no matter which profession should NEVER be an acceptable form of game play. You CAN be the best player in the world and you will STILL get caught with an unavoidable one shot.
@Rainsfords I play every profession in Spvp. They’re all different, but you can achieve very similar results with any profession.
Besides the things we’ve beaten to death, ele’s are in good shape.

Outside of bug fixes d/d and s/d ele’s are fine. I’m not sure of the other weapons as I’ve only played builds around those combos.
Still, the most fun profession in the game.
Edit: Besides the obvious of downed state being looked at for ele, of course.

Yeah, it’s called tournament pvp…it’s been around since release. It is still available.
Listen, all of us clowns who are complaining about this need to realize that A-Net doesn’t half a— it. They’re only going to release a fix for this “when it’s ready”…This means having someone go through lines and lines of code to make sure everything works as intended. Then it has to go through the localization process, oh wait…

Pretty frustrating sometimes.
You know what’s even more frustrating? The stealth issue where characters don’t render for 2-3 seconds while coming out of stealth. Hopefully they fix your issue when they fix the stealth issue.
That’s not the root of the problem, the root of the problem is the Treb does too much damage.
The knockback is fine, the amount of damage they do needs to be toned down. Dedicating a person to help win a point or control a point with knockbacks makes senese. Doing 9-10k damage, is a bit much.
I hope you’re referencing pve, because the “nerf” didn’t do jack for pvp.
Most enjoyable pvp I’ve experienced. From EQ1-WoW/Rift. The only thing I miss are arenas.
You’ve basically summed up a variety of builds of all professions…congratulations.
Hands down the best and most fun profession in the game.
They also need to change it to make it unaffected by autotargetting.
You can do that yourself in settings.
Yea I figured the “do not click spells” thing would come up. Should’ve mentioned that I can’t adapt to hotkeys. After 10+ years of playing mmos, I’m stuck on clicks. Just my preferred style, despite it being worse, thanks though.
Buy a razer naga, it will make the transition alot easier.

It’s because, contrary to popular belief, elementalists are not meant to be played by swapping through attunements constantly.
That’s supposed to be one choice that Elementalists have, if they choose to build that way and even then swapping attunements needs to be a choice. The only penalty there is in place is the opportunity cost— the cooldown for switching attunements. Take that away or lower it too much and suddenly Elementalists aren’t jack-of-all-trades but just overpowered.
I always find it peculiar when people make these claims. How are you able to speak from a position of authority on how the playstyle was meant to be? I mean, are you the lead developer for the elemental profession?
In pvp, you’re constantly having to switch attunements for one or two abilities, depending on the situation.
MMO = Playing with friends, no?
Can you not read or are you intentionally being daft? There is a group options, it’s called tournament play.
I absolutely love the 2 x D build I’m running. If you enjoy a fast paced build with diversity that requires you to think, play a double dagger build.
I’m not up to date with all the intricacies that GW2 has to offer, but even at this state I feel the elementalist is great fun and I don’t have problems in spvp. My two complaints would be the downed state for ele’s as well as the base hp’s. Even both of those draw backs can be lessened by proper play.
Go 2 X D and have a blast.
What’s so good about Dagger/Dagger? I’ve heard people mention it a lot, but i never saw the appeal :/

2xD is the most fun you’ll have as well as tearing it up in pvp.
