Cooperative instanced challenging instances add replaybility to the game and thus longevity. This is something a MMO wants to work toward to for the sake of their active playerbase.

Colesy, think about the latest Living Story boss encounters that are actually cool but that no one is ever going to touch again. They could be easily recycled into a dungeon and add more stuff for their players to invest time on.

Adding dungeons that reflect that kind of mechanic recycling is just smart business. Doing a one-time encounter for Living Story is not, however.

It’s much more profitable to just continuously feed them hope until they wander off by themselves. All the while dropping a few bucks on the Gemstore they love.

Certainly, but that doesn’t mean there will be a situation where only 5 players will be there. If it’s open world, you can bet on it being zerged, filled with people and bodies who won’t waypoint when dead.

A coordinated group can be a zerg. Examples: Tequatl, Triple Wurm.

which is a good thing and doesnt automatically mean there wont be instanced content.

+ if im not mistaken they said the boss is a 5 man boss?

“In Guild Wars 2, there are many skills that we consider control skills because they control what an enemy can do. These skills can stun an enemy, make them run in fear, knock them down, or otherwise prevent them from moving and attacking as they wish. These become problematic for boss creatures, which could be permanently controlled when fighting a coordinated group or *large number of players.”*

It is also said the Wyvern will harass players in the jungle and it’s open world. I hardly see how they would limit that fight to 5 players if thats the case.

This is also their reasoning for the Defiant re-work. To make zerg content more interesting in terms of CC. Of course we all know how this will end up: the new defiant bar being chewed away by the zerg spamming CC skills and it’s regeneration cant keep up with the CC spam and it just won’t matter the timing of CC, if the boss is constantly losing stacks lightning fast.

Look, I’m not saying our current Defiant is good, because it isn’t. But applying the new concept of Defiant to our old dungeons is just stupid. It doesn’t make sense.

“cc diversity” might be ruined. but with this system they open the door for more complex encounters and interrupt-based mechanics that can melt your face.

and i really doubt they changed this with more easy mode content in mind.

They made this system with open-world content in mind as their first, number one, priority. You still think we’re getting dungeons in HoT?

This is just an awful system. That alone turns all CC skills in PvE into generic copies of each other with different values to break the new Defiant bar.

We will no longer have different types of CC, since the “break-defiant-bar” response will be a “significant stun”.

That is a boring system.

I agree. Why put that system in dungeons? It makes sense to put it in zerg content because it’s not like your CC was doing anything anyway, but why ruin all cc in organized instanced content?

Well, because they’ve stopped developping organized instanced content for this game. Now they only churn out zerg content through world bosses.

Heart of Thorns will be filled with it. There will be no new dungeons in HoT. How do I know that?

Because it’s so much easier to deliver good news than bad news.

If there was anything they would be thrilled to tease us, but there’s nothing which explains the silence and spam of the terms “challenging group content” for open-world HoT content. They’re trying to move away as far as possible from the dungeon concept as “challenging group content”.

They probably found out the majority of their playerbase is not skilled enough to perform regular dungeons, so it’s not worth to spend time developping said area.

Dungeons also are static, and go agaisnt their idea of “a living world, with dynamic stuff happening everywhere”.

Then again, world bosses are spawned on a timer basis, so much for dynamic right?

It’s just hipocrisy.

The PvE community is already heavily split between meta and anti-meta (i’m kinda both), so not implementing [hard mode], even tho the resources and know-how is there (like fractal instabilities), taking both sides and say “NOW KISS!” isn’t really gonna help.

Right? This would make things so much better for both groups:

- Players that would just like to casually run an easy version of a dungeon wouldn’t have to worry about conforming to some standard that they don’t care about.
- Players that are serious about their dungeon runs could have more difficult content that better justifies the requirements placed on their groups.

It seems like it’d be such a godsend for this game.

Perhaps they’d be more open to an “easy vs. normal” mode for dungeons instead of “normal vs. hard”? It could be the same thing, just with different labels — except these labels would help bolster their reputation as the “casual friendly” MMO.

They already stated there will never be a Hard Mode for GW2. Why? They say it splits the playerbase.

The genius statement of the year. It splits the playerbase so we won’t do it. Well? Your playerbase is already split Anet, and no matter how long you wait, those 2 different type of players are NEVER getting along. It’s impossible.

What do we end up with? Instead of trying to find a balance for the two type of players they go all-in on the casual type. This game’s design decisions are such a constant disapointment.

Being a fish in a school is not what I signed up for a MMO. I get it how casuals find the appeal though

Also, look at these loaded questions from the interviews. They must be the pinnacle of PHIWs:

  • Ten Ton Hammer: Do you think this change to Defiance will encourage players to spread out their utility skills so they aren’t just bringing damage to the table?
  • Ten Ton Hammer: It seems as though with the addition of Slow and Taunt and now Defiance that Guild Wars 2 is moving in a direction of control as opposed to always relying on damage to overcome content.

And some of them are straight up obvious:

The Adventures thing does have a chance to be something good, I think. Considering:

- They’re meant to replace hearts. Most of them will need to be on the easy side of things, as this is for open world PvE’rs. If they decide to put in some actual decent boss fights in just a few of them as well, that’s something I’d like to see.
- They can be instanced. Imagine a world boss where you can start up an instance for you solo, your 5 man party, or your 500 man guild. Depending on how they decide to tune scaling, these could potentially be like fractal shards without the RNG.
- They demo’d the first one in the starter area. I hope this is why it looked like more of a faceroll tutorial than a challenge.

If some of the encounters are instanced and challenging, I’d enjoy it. I can potentially see them putting in something like a dungeon path as an Adventure. It sounds like a really flexible system that, if done right, could satisfy both casuals and elitists.

I’d like to see more about the reward system as well. But even with no significant reward, optionally instancing open world bosses would be an improvement.

Where does it say it can be instanced? The Adventure they showed us was clearly open world

This is why GW1 was so fun to play. They updated some areas in order to make them harder, for example Skeletons of Dhuum in Underworld.

An updating and increasingly challenging instance is all we ever wanted for GW2. As you can see, this should be the definition of fractals but it falls short of it.

That being said I wouldnt buy single dungeons, but I would consider buying a Dungeon Pack (about 6 dungeons), or having those 6 new dungeons unlockable in-game through specific challenges.

If they made Glint’s lair into a fractal, I wouldn’t complain.

It would be cool, for sure. I’d rather see it as a dungeon without the RNG, though.

They’ve said they’re reworking traits. I hope they’re reworking fractal selection and rewards, too.

It’d be kittening wonderful if we didn’t have to wait for some big hyped up announcement to find out. For the life of me, I don’t know why they can’t just say “We know this is bad, and we’re working on it” in a timely manner and without all of the theatrics.

Everyone would rather see it as a fully fleshed dungeon, but we are realistic with Anet now. That’s why we expect Fractals and not dungeons, less work for them ^^

On the one hand, I’m not optimistic because a new dungeon would have been as huge as a new WvW/PvP map for a lot of players.
On the other hand, they clearly don’t care about PvE other than the story that much, so maybe in their eyes it is just not a major feature. Or it is self evident that with a new set of maps comes a new dungeon. Or they weren’t ready to announce it yet. Or they’re saving the best as a surprise. How nice would that be?
New dragon fight could be new Arah-style dungeon (I sincerely hope so but won’t get my hopes up too much) but it could also be another world boss… Only more details can tell!

They recently said in an interview that all we heard on PAX is all we’re going to get, and that they have a lot of work to do, like defining how many players is the new gamemode Stronghold gonna take (they tested from 5v5 to 10v10).

That kind of info tells me they have a lot of stuff unfinished and that the expansion is gonna take a while.

You think the UI redesign they would have to undertake to introduce raids with more than 5 players wouldnt be content they were excited to mention?

I highly doubt we’re going to see dungeons. He also said this:

“We admit that the content is there and is perfect for a big guild raid, all it takes is just the implementation.”

“Just” the implementation. Long story short: we could, but we didn’t.

I’m grasping for hints of dungeons but everything points in the wrong direction. This is looking less like an expansion and more like a small DLC.

" We release content all the time, but honestly, most of it is not very, very difficult challenges for groups. And when you think about it, I think you’ll realize that’s because it’s hard for us to be able to release content that’s so difficult that most players can’t solve it right away. That’s actually a lot of the genesis of Heart of Thorns: being able to put in these endgame character progression systems so that we can release content in the jungle that requires you to have played all of the jungle to build up the abilities you need to solve that content. If you haven’t played the jungle and you haven’t built up your character, you’re not going to beat that content. We’ve been developing content, but we haven’t been saying that it’s the ultimate group challenge. I think that’s something Guild Wars 2 needs and hasn’t had. Heart of Thorns is laying the groundwork so we really can bring ultimate challenges to the game."

This confirms the “challenging group content” is in the jungle aka open-world, and that part of the “challenge” will just be because the players have to make progress within the mastery system to unlock certain stuff.

As for GvG competitiveness, how will that work out if only people who bought the expansion can play it?

I don’t agree with forcing people to buy something in order to play a new competitive PvP mode. I don’t think that’s a honest strategy and it has never worked well for a game wanting to be competitive.

I’m with Tom on this one.

They tried twice to delete the dungeon/fractal subforum. The last one very recently.

Does deleting the subforum makes sense if they were going to introduce new dungeons or raid content? It doesnt make sense.

They said challenging group content. Group content can easily be World Bosses. Challenging? Well, that’s the exact word they used to describe Living Story achievements.

ESO is going to be B2P in March… they have dungeons….. much better dungeons than GW2. They also have trinity but with active combat like GW2.

I think this game might appeal to us – dungeoneers more.

Didnt that game went B2P because it failed because of the gameplay? Dont know if thats convincing…

Will Heart of Thorns include new dungeons?
