Travlane, you’re the first player I’ve ever heard of who not only likes this trait, but also regularly uses it in his build.
It happens, I’ve never been bugged by Last Refuge
well…challenge me to a fight on any non thief player…ull see then
(only reason non thief is bc itll be a draw otherwise if 2 good players.)_
Why? You like Hard-To-Catch, I have not been bugged by Last Refuge and other people dislike both. What’s there to prove with a challenge? You like them, or you don’t.
true but he was using it in the wrong way. d/d condi evade is amazing build. just not amazing in wvw. every build/skill has better areas of use. everyone who has used my build LOVES this trait. now thakittens on 30 secs it;ll save life even more
Hum who said anything about using d/d condi evade build?
Also, I am talking about SPvP in here. Trait that up and go do some hotjoins you will come into sense about this trait. This trait adds randomness and unpredicatiblity to your OWN build, how is that a good thing? One moment you were planning out your combos and your next move and then bam, shadowstepped into the middle of an AoE / buggy terrain/stairs.
Since ArenaNet is using the SPvP as a method of balancing professions I dont see why a Grandmaster trait should be useless there.
To the guys saying this trait is good when having a ranged weapon on, if you had the trait like I suggested instead your kiting potential would be even better.
(edited by Quickfoot Katana.8642)
Hard to Catch: Shadowstep away and give swiftness (12s) when you are disabled (stun, daze, float, knock down, launch, knock back, sink, or fear). This effect cannot occur more than once every 30 seconds.
Why is this so useless you ask?
- Doesn’t break disables. This point is very important. I would much rather have this trait off and use a stunbreaker when the situation arises, than to be shadowstepped away for a mere headshot daze and have to use my gapclosers to get back on the target.
- If you are stability stomping someone and that guy uses any form of CC, you WILL be shadowstepped away and get your stomp interrupted. How clunkier and counterintuitive can this trait get?
- When a teamfight arises on keep, in Forest of Nifhel, stay the hell away from the border or you WILL be shadowstepped outside of the keep.
EDIT: Tested a little bit further and if you stay on the Clocktower’s cap point 50% of the time you will get shadowstepped to the tunnel below and lose the cap point because of that.
TL;DR: Traits are suposed to bring in versability, especially a Grandmaster. But all this trait offers is limitations. Reducing the trait’s cooldown won’t make it better, it will just make it worse as it is.
I’ve added a sugestion box to the trait, hopefully we can get a Dev absorb some of the sugestions or atleast explain why is the trait worthy of a Grandmaster tier if it’s so unreliable/unpredictable in its’ current state.
Please keep the discussion constructive and assertive. No dueling bragging rights in here.
Sugested Changes so far:
- Next skill’s crowd control that would otherwise disable you is negated. (75 second cooldown) – Quickfoot Katana
- Change it to a very short range shadowstep + stealth – Grimwolf
- Attempting to dodge while immobilized/stunned/etc will teleport you back X range – bobross

S/D Ele:
Ring of fire -> Dragons Tooth + Phoenix -> Earth -> Earthquake + Arcane Wave
There you go, easily obtainable 12 aoe might stacks for the team, which is what every good ele does on a rotation. Those ability have a cooldown.
Earthquake and Arcane Wave, also, have a pretty high cooldown.
I know that S/D Ele has a quite high amount of finishers, but it is still inferior to Cluster Bomb on 3 initiative.Actually that’s simply not true. Sorry to jump in here – I was just browsing the thief forums for some giggles – but I play a support Elly in PvE. With 30 points in the Arcane Tree, Runes of Water x 2, Runes of Monk x 2, Runes of Strength x 2 + Boon Duration food an Elementalist can keep a stack of 25 might on a team Solo… With the latest patch if we trait for it we can give the team perminant might and fury. And I can do that with two different weapon set combinations (haven’t tested others)…
Argue all you want about Guardians vs Thieves, but you’re wrong about the elementalist :p
That is a fringe case.
If you build completely to stack might on your team, of course you’re better at it compared to a Thief with no specific build.
That doesn’t invalidate my point.
Anything is better than a shortbow thief now. If you like to be an useless clusterbomb-bot for ur team while doing nothing in the teamfights go ahead
Hello,
Can you guys start thinking about doing what you did back in GW1, which is to sell a PvP-only version of the game for a much, much cheaper price. This could work well in GW2, boosting up the PvP playerbase and even increase sales if they later decide to upgrade to the Full Game Version.
I don’t see any downpoints to this! It even is known to work in your previous game!
Just to clarify:
It’s actually significantly cheaper than a sub fee. The $20 you spend is the initial cost. It could also cost $10 + Gold, or no money at all if you have enough gold.
Once you have a server, it costs 480 gems for 20 days, 960 for 40 days, 1440 for 60 days. That’s less than $10/mo if only one person is supporting the server. Anyone can apply time to servers. Also, don’t forget you can convert gold to gems.
And how are PvPers getting the gold for that? Hello? We are not PvErs.
Time to make sPVP free2play. Remove the need to purchase the PVE game to play PVP. That’s necessary to bring in players.
They can just do what they did back in GW1, which is to sell a PvP-only version of the game for a much, much cheaper price. This could work well in GW2, to boost the PvP playerbase and even increase sales if they later decide to upgrade to the Full Game Version.
No, you just have to depend on someone else laying down a field for you! Meaning that other person is the one providing group support, not the thief. I’m pretty sure every profession has access to a blast finisher, meaning the Thief is not necessary anywhere in that equation. And I know for a fact people would much rather have a Guardian than a Thief in a group for pretty much anything. So I’ll ask again: Where’s our fire field? Or even water? Light?
The Thief profession has abysmal group support, full stop. You will not succeed in convincing anyone who has played the profession otherwise (It’s like we’re 2/3s of a complete class. Damage / Survivability / ?? Support ??).
Thieves have an huge amount of finishers compared to other professions.
A field isn’t enough if you don’t have finishers to take advantage from.
Take elementalists, for instance. They have an huge amount of fields, while not so many combo finishers. Same applies to Necromancers. They have a low amount of unreliable finishers while they have a lot of fields. They just have a different roles in support. An Elementalist alone isn’t capable to stack 12 might on your team. They need a thief to blast finishing into his fire fields. Both combined are way stronger than a single guardian stacking a poor amount of mights alone.
That’s the whole point of cross-profession combos.
S/D Ele:
Ring of fire → Dragons Tooth + Phoenix → Earth → Earthquake + Arcane Wave
There you go, easily obtainable 12 aoe might stacks for the team, which is what every good ele does on a rotation.
I simply believe that if ArenaNet wants to create a game that joins the ranks of the big esports, it is wasting its time on Guild Wars 2 and is better off creating a new IP. If it wanted to make Guild Wars 2 an esport from the very beginning, the plan had some serious strategic missteps.
Keep in mind they can do what they in GW1, which is sell the PvP version of the game separately, for a lower price. Worked really good for GW1, and I am SURE it would work even better for Guild Wars 2!
At first I thought you was talking about people don’t have mindset to win in GW2 which I agree.
StarCraft and LoL you play to win you don’t play to zerg kills and caps for points. You sure don’t see people getting something extra because they killed the most and got the most resources that’s just for show the end result is that you won or lost. In GW2 people are satisfied if they lost a game but had 400 glory compared to the victors with 100 glory.
It would be interesting to see GW2 PvP rewarding you as a team rather than individual. I could see more people spreading out and playing strategically to win rather than to gain as much individual points as possible.
You shouldnt really expect organization at hotjoins. Go to the tournaments and get back to this thread.
This hotjoin zerg problem wont go away until the reward system is properly tuned. Especially when you are getting more glory/rank by farming individual points than on tournaments. Also Hotjoins are filled with PvErs doing their daily PvP for the free Laurels.

There are some fails on matchmaking right now. But regardless, if you are ALWAYS getting matched agaisnt high ranked premades that means their rating is just as good as your team’s.
Now I didn’t reach r42 in sPvP by dying to thieves, so I fought back.
Everytime I hear the rank in SPvP as a measurement of skill, I laugh too.
The score is almost meaningless in my opinion. As a thief I am sometimes baiting 1v3 situations where I hold and distract them while my team does some capping. What do you get for that advantage? 0 points. Theres really no way they can metric this though, but it serves as a point that in some cases the points you get mean nothing. Especially when Im in a hotjoin I just pointwhhore my way into 1rst places pretty much all the time.
It should be the same. Sounds stupid to have 2 rating systems for one objective doesnt it?
Its a new SPvP map which includes a portal mechanic.
Should any nerf arrive to S/D, I feel one of the following is the most reasonable:
- LS is no longer unblockable – providing more counterplay to the boon-stealing
- Increased LS aftercast back to regular values
This might be a toxic change because the typical LS-#1 auto attack reset is very good at separating bad S/D thiefs from great ones, but this nerf could be used to reduce the potential damage of the build, turning into a more support focused build
- Some kind of cooldown into boonstealing having it rescaled:
2/1/1/1 boons stolen. Basically first LS would steal 2 boons. If its used again in a time window of X seconds (up to balance), next LS would only steal 1 boon. After the cooldown wears off, the boonstealing resets back to 2. EDIT This change has the potential of encouraging smart-play of S/D, where well timed LS will be way more effective than a S/D 3333 spammer.
Basically the first change I’ve suggested puts the counterplay in the hands of the thief’s victim, while the last change puts the effectiveness of the build in the hands of the thief himself. So we could probably use both changes at the same time.
Competitive means that the only thing which matters should be skill, not your class. So if a build is too much effective at lower skill levels, it should be adjusted to be rewarding if played right and punshing if played wrong.

Bump. Quality of life improvement
I guess every good thief in that situation will do the same thing as Ben did, because you only need to touch me once to down me. For his situation, he basically have no time to put his blinding powder because I already bulls charged him right after he go into stealth, and his stun break in cd. At beginning of the fight he did put blinding powder and heart seeker + mug but missed everything, and that still keeps him stay in stealth. In other words, I messed up his stealth rotation.
Ben Zy is actually a good, decent thief, so I’m not insulting him. I’m just here to show people that warrior isn’t pathetic class, and showing people how powerful Longbow Warrior is when you mastered it.
Really? Even lv1 player thieves in hotjoin knows better than this and just use dagger 2 or 3 to just instant gib you. Only thing you showed was a fluke and that’s grounds to say how powerful LB warrior is? Also you still down but a necro came to save you. Should I make a video of be HB someone and put it in slow mode with some music in the background and in big flashing text “GOD LIKE”. That video is worse than people posting WvW solo roaming killing low levels who are retreating.
Also I’m not saying he’s a bad thief, I’m saying showing a video where someone made a mistake and you take it as you’re the best ever kind of BS.
I just feel like you are extrapolating your anger. It was a good timed dodge which resulted in a good play because the thief was denied his burst. Are you mad with someone else and taking out on people who put videos on the forums?
They introduced custom arenas and hoped that would suffice for our Dueling desire. It is not the same thing. 1 click away dueling inside of the HoM would be by FAR the best option.
They wont do this, atleast for a looong time, since they are shipping out:
bugfixes this month → balance next month And probably some SoloQ matchmaking and rewards improvements. Minor features like this will take a while.
Its sad because Warriors have to spent all their time doing maths, like in this thread, in order to do something in PvP, whereas other classes just roll away :P
What a bunch of hypocrysis smoking out of this thread. Loved the video. We need more small videos of good plays like these. Cheers.
Can any of you high skilled thieves give some tourney tips? Do"s and Don’t"s
I think they said somewhere they already tried the MOBA style but it was not working out good. Also, no gear upgrade on SPvP, thats ridiculous.
Keep complaining about thieves and disregard Eles and Mesmers.
Retired Playas [cluB] is looking for a 5th player to join our tourny team. Mesmer and/or Elementalist is perfect. We try to play every night starting betweent 7-8 central. Please message me in game (Fugazi Heals-fugazi.5139) if you are interested. Also I would like to have 2 backup players that are solid to fill in when needed. Meow.
Are you EU or NA?
Why not take a page from LoL’s book? Similar to how level 1-20 summoners will generally only be matched with each other, how about keeping r1-10 players in a separate tourney queue (unless premade)?
Although I agree with matchmaking is in need of some hard work to make it right, your solution is pulling the problem even closer!
Ranks are by no means indicative of player skill. You can have a rank 20 that is extremely talented at PvP and won 80% of his matches. You think this rank 20 should play with and against other rank 20 with 50% win ratio? I think not.
The current system has in mind each player’s MMR and not his PvP Rank (I still think this type of rank is a joke, only tells you how much time you spent playing)
Thing is, the current system tries to get an average MMR per team, so if a team has a very high MMR, if you put a low MMR guy in there, it goes to medium MMR and having a medium MMR can grant you faster matchmaking agaisnt other medium MMR team. And thats the real problem right there!

Hello,
Is the current matchmaking system for PvP tourneys where you want it to be?
I think I speak for any solo queuer that it is extremely frustating to be constantly matched agaisnt 5-man premades. It’s really not fair, regardless of those premades having the same “rating” that we do.
The way the matchmaking is currently in place, heavily punishes anyone trying to climb up the ladder by himself (Solo Queue).
Is it possible to separate the matchmaking into Solo Queue and Team Queue like its implemented in MOBAs? Most of the people wouldnt mind to wait a couple 1-2 minutes if it means we are actually getting a balanced match (solos vs solos).
- TL;DR:Currently you are being forced to create a team to go up on the ladder and try to have some recognition in PvP.

great shoutcaster, great stream, keep it up
Colin, my warrior friend gets 3x more rares than I do. And I have some magic find and he doesnt. Also when I swapped from condition damage to raw damage I started getting more loot. There was also a time where we got 4 items as loot, and I got 2.
So Im pretty sure better loot is being given to whoever deals the most damage and this is incredibly frustating and agaisnt the philosophy of “play your way” of Guild Wars 2.
We would all appreciate if you could give us a brief explanation on how loot is handled. Thanks in advance
(edited by Quickfoot Katana.8642)
You could solo/duo the whole run while people waited. It would go like this: pay half at the middle of the dungeon, the other half at the end.
I know a old hardcore guy from gw1 and his guild runs arah p4 with all 5 guildies, then 3 of them leave, the fill up the slots with people paying 7g each, finish the dungeon everyone got their rewards, and the guildies would split the profit. If thats the way the other guilds are doing it, I see no harm in doing so.
Have you tested it with the rangers protect me? I believe it might be the only way to bypass it
I would seriously like to know the problem with slot running dungeons. If people are willing to play and there were no random players kicked at the middle of the dungeon, and as long as they are NOT using a glitch to get there, there should be no problems…
We did this all the time in GW1 for christ sake!

Mesmer see, Mesmer do
What does this picture prove? Anyone can avoid agony by staying back there, but I’d like to see the mesmer jump to the platform and still not get hit with it…
They just don’t fully understand how the Agony works on that map. The Jade Maw’s Agony doesn’t just fire once. The moment you cross over into range of it (mid-air, jumping down from that rock), Agony will be applied to you, even if it’s well after your party has been hit. Someone has to be able to live through the Agony to revive the players in your group who died to it.
Pets don’t get hit by the Jade Maw’s Agony; neither does the ghost from Revive Orbs. That’s why those work.
If you use mist form while entering that spot, do you take the said agony damage?
Same question for warrior’s endure pain,
Same question for ranger with: traited signet of stone, or protect me, since some of you say pets dont get hit by agony.
Would any of these methods work? This is a legitimate question, as Im not that far in Fractals yet. Pm me a message if any of you do manage to test it out!
X=being a skill animation used by the respective minipet in mob version, or a sound effect, or some particle effects.
Since rare items, exotic, dont spawn as much, this X event could be done with a 100% chance, or a tuned percentage, like the random phrases when rare/exotic pickup
Two different ways to execute:
Before actually looting (not sure if its possible due to the way the game is built):
minipets display X when mobs drop loot quality that is superior than rare.
*this method has the advantage of making the looting more memorable, without making the player feel bad when this animation doesnt happen!
After looting (perfectly doable because your character has set phrases to speak when you sometimes loot an exotic piece (Example: Ooo, thats valuable!)):
When you loot items above rare quality they display X.
Conclusion: Since this is nothing more than a vanity change, it doesnt force players to have it, nor it provides an advantage over not having a minipet.
Perhaps to further encourage the purchase of minipets and to differentiate rarer from common minipets it is suggested that a minipet tier would be created:
Common minipets would display just a simple animation
Rare minipets could provide a more visible animation, or some added voice, sound that they already make as mobs
This adds more depth to minipets, while recycling existing content: the sounds and animations already exist, there is already a trigger on rare/exotic pickup we just have to connect the dots to make this system!
I would really appreciate player-made sugestions and improvements to this topic, and if possible a developer’s insight if they choose not to take this suggestion foward.
It is a low priority improvement, but greatly rewarding!
(edited by Quickfoot Katana.8642)
What is this land control you are talking about?
I will just add that this happened in Ascalonian Catacombs explorable mode aswell. ArenaNet are you aware of this issue?
Ok so this happened 2 times now, upon killing the final bosses of Caudecus Manor, both Frost and the centaur, the chest appears and some instant rewards pop up (XP, silver, and the dungeon tokens). My party was fast looting chest and left dungeon. As soon as the 4 of them left, I got kicked out of the dungeon with no right to loot my chest. This is really annoying and should be adressed by two options:
Stay in the dungeon;
Get kicked, but a similar extra inventory window like in GW1 pops up, allowing you to pick up the remaining loot.
I am really kitten off about losing rewards that I worked for.
Lol and? In GW1 Vera was a green hammer and I dont see anyone complaining…
If not even GW1 players care about it, why should a completely unrelated show like that matter?
There already is a buff when you’re outnumbered in a zone.
Do you even know what does that buff consist in?
Here’s some help: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Outmanned
NONE of this helps you if you are outnumbered. It’s a pathetic buff that basically looks to you in the eyes and says: LOL you can’t beat them, here’s extra XP and magic find, go farm grubs and wolves.
