Mace - Torch

Mace Torch can be in a burst spec with Scepter Focus as other set. You usually run triple meditation/double with SYG!. You also want to spec mostly glass. Right-hand strength (15% crit) should mean you can get more defensive stats.

Torch 5 channel is not reliable but can work on Stealth house/downed bodies. You can also force dodges…

Your basic rotation is to focus block (count the 4 secs) → swap set → throw torch → VoJ + Protector’s Strike + JI + Smite Condition (with Meditation instant trait). They should pretty much all land at the same time. On a squishy this should be 12k+.

The strong point of the set is that mace burst comes with a block, is fairly hard to see/avoid and is fully AoE (3 big hits).

If what you have in mind is not burst, you can spec symbols for mace. Symbols are larger and heal both synergize very well with the weapon. Mace Focus/Shield with Staff/GS, just any weapon with on-demand symbols. Torch is really good for full glass specs but less so for tanky ones. There have been people running around with burn builds but I haven’t explored in detail.

1k healing power gives u around ONLY 200+ heal with the shield (that have 40~32 sec cd). Healing power sucks.

1098 Healing power gives a 1520 AoE heal with the Shield of Absorption Detonate. It’s not a lot but does buy a crucial second.

Some points…
1. Shield 5 is an AoE knockback that other shields don’t have (and gets thieves out of Stealth house) and with scepter immob + hammer ring is a standard play for bunkers;
2. Also a 4 second projectile block in a small area covering your team (block grenade spam, though you rarely see Engi condi in tourneys anymore…);
3. You can double knockback if you have Resolute Healer trait when ressing a downed person;
4. You can double tap to get an emergency heal (not bad with ~1k healing power);
5. When a thief BP + HS you to backstab and nothing else is up, Shield 4 protection will help you eat it and the HS spam afterwards, hopefully buying time. You can also give protection to teammates when you know a burst (Static Discharge Engi, ugh) is coming. Chain with “Hold the Line!” to be even more annoying.

Well you can block the giant I suppose, if you Shield 5 and pop Virtue of Courage or “Retreat!” at the same time…

For leveling, the best set in my opinion is Greatsword with Staff; slot full Berzerkers so you can power through mobs and complete hearts faster. Travel time is also 80% of your leveling time, so Staff swiftness is really important.
Utilities: Heal Signet, Smite Conditions, Wall of Reflection/Shield of the Avenger, and any 1 shout you like. Switch around and customise to situations.

Always go 5 in Honour tree first, the vigour is too good to give up.
With PvE leveling you want to improve your quality of life so take Signet CD and 2-handed CD. I maxed the Valour tree because I like meditations but run whatever you want really. Valour and Honour both have defensive stats (Tough, Vit) to help with survivability.

You don’t need Absolute Resolution (Virtues IX) because you will never be overwhelmed by multiple conditions. You can slot Contemplation of Purity/Purging Flames if there’s something you’re seriously in trouble with (like things that stack burning). But don’t forget you have Heal Signet passive and Purity (Valour V) to help with that.
You don’t need anything in Zeal because the traits… suck.
15 in Radiance allows you to burn anything since you will kill mobs loads.
You can switch out Wrathful Spirit (Honour I) for Superior Aria (II) if you prefer.

Quality of Life:
Run around with Staff as it gives you swiftness (skill 3). Put Line of Warding down to stop melee mobs chasing you.

Maximum AoE:
Gather 5 mobs, LoS pull behind obstacles. Line of Warding to stop them, Empower, Orb of Light, switch to Greatsword, Binding Blade, Symbol of Wrath, Pull, Whirling Wrath, Leap of Faith, Smite Condition. Spam GS to taste.

Run Mace or Sword with Focus or Torch and Staff or GS in other slot for Veterans (skill points). Switch out 2-handed CD for Writ of the Merciful (Honour X) if you run Mace/Staff. You really won’t have a problem if your Berzerker gear is up to level. Ranged Vets and Imps will need more CC and reflects. I suggest Shield of the Avenger/Wall of Reflection. Sword + Shield also negates a lot of Projectiles. You also have Shelter and Renewed Focus which can be timed to block shots.

Engineer may not be the profession for you.

Just sayin’.

This argument has met the concrete wall of this forum many times.

The engineer is a complex profession with a high skill floor based upon the manipulation of numerous skills and cooldowns at one time. Micromanagement of many skills is key to the successful operation of the engineer.

If you want a less complex way of playing the game, then go play your guardian or thief or mesmer.

All bunker engi specs use kits for the pile of CC, blinds and blocks they offer.
Engineers are inventors, gadget whizzes and walking arsenals that employ a large variety of tools to fight their way to victory. With kits you become very unpredictable because you can access a lot of different tools nearly instantly.

The Flamethrower is great except for the autoattack. Everything else goes well with a condi or bunker spec with the control and burning it offers. It has been a longstanding fact since beta.

Mesmer and Guardian may be better classes for you. They don’t have a huge list of skills and are more straightforward to play. Actually, besides the Elementalist, all the other classes don’t “need to kittenen juggle 20 different buttons in one battle”. I think you picked the Engineer to play for the wrong reasons…

Vigour in Alchemy can be nice, gives you some dodges.
Don’t forget Incendiary Ammo gives you large burn stacks.
Elixir S and Toolkit are great mitigation tools, try them out sometime? Rampager is rather squishy (ran HGH Rampager before).
Seems ok to me… superior earth and fire share a CD i think (5 seconds), better off with an always on/on kill sigil on one hand.

Eeeeveryone wants to live longer. Noooobody wants to do take more than 10 seconds to kill somebody.

So where does that leave us?

Everyone wants the damage of Berserker, tankiness of Soldier, the healing sustain of Cleric, condition of Rabid, and classes with perfect trait lines.
As someone I met had asked in guild chat, I want a build that can “survive and kill”. Burst like a Thief, Condi like a Necro, and Sustain like an Elementalist. We all told him that can’t happen and you have to give up something. He instantly went on the defensive and said his build did exactly as he had hoped (why are you even asking then?). Guess what that build has… EM + AH…

because I want to live for more than three seconds… even with AH it’s hard to live that long.

and 0-0-10-30-30 doesn’t work… all the damage skills are physical, you lose more physical damage than you pick up in condition damage …and once again AH+EM is more healing that you get with Absolute Resolution.

So you’re doing less damage, have less toughness, and do less self healing.. Fail.

You are not concerned about damage when bunkering down/team support.

It is unlikely that you are going to be getting more heals from AH when there is no one/limited people around to proc off, especially when the bunker build is running clerics.

You provide less team heal output and team support from AH.

You have less condi clear/breaks.

You have less buff uptime.

For a build that is “fail” a fair few tourny teams have/do use it..

AH is great for running in a big old zerg though. Again, it depends on what you are trying to do.

0/0/10/30/30 has been a staple of tPvP Guardian builds since… beta. A variation is 0/0/20/30/30 taking shield CD and dropping Indomitable Courage.

Fenrir is right about AH + EM, and if you are not running in a zerg, you will not proc it enough for the healing to be significant. Moreover, any good small WvW roaming groups or Tourney players will bring plenty of condition pressure, which AH + EM fails to address. EM also encourages you to be in the thick of it longer than is safe, and unnecessary AoE cleave will waste your heals.

tPvP Bunker Guardian runs a double (sometimes triple) Shout + Soldier runes setup + Pure of Voice + Absolute Resolution (+ Renewed Focus) for unrivalled AoE Condition Wipe and Boon application. Although in the face of the condi meta, you are forced to blow a lot of your skills early to keep yourself up, your team is there to peel for you.

Damage, Healing and Toughness aren’t everything. You can avoid a lot of key burst skills with Shelter, Virtue of Courage, SYG! -> Renewed Focus and your weapon CCs. Why the Guardian can bunk efficiently with the lowest tier of Health is because of the mixture of Control, Damage Avoidance (Blinds, Blocks, Invulns) and decent Healing. Moreover, I’ve had a lot of experience with VoJ granting the last bit of pressure in a teamfight to perform clutch kills, as the burning may not be high in damage but stacks good duration.

If you’re in small scale fights, get some Cleric gear and a staff, and all you really need to do is cleanse yourself with a shout, spam Empower/Detonate Shield of Absorption, VoR + RF and the refreshed VoR along with all your boons will keep you alive. Wall of Reflection is a good 3rd utility to help with not dying.

I also feel you are missing out by not trying Triple/Double Meditation builds or Symbol builds that are also good builds that perform differently.

Well, I have 3 blocks ready (2 shield skills and gear shield from tool kit) and if those aren’t enough there’s still dodging and super speed. And if that still isn’t enough I have to hope 53% damage reduction keeps me alive long enough to use rocket boots again.

5 people does not a zerg make. Why would I focus on skills that hit at most 5 people? Everything you said is exactly the opposite of “get creative” since every single one of those suggestions are already “part of the norm”.

Right. My suggestions were based on the unmentioned assumption that Slick Shoes creates less disruption than the other 5-capped skills. My bad. Slick Shoes has a long CD and very short duration. You can Slick Shoes + Rocket Boots into a zerg, but it would only hit in a very narrow straight line. Do you plan to run head-on into them or from the side? The same sort of disruption could be provided by a Guardian Line of Warding, JI + Ring of Warding or a Mesmer Temporal Curtain. On lower CD.

Those that I listed don’t have to be run on their own. You can apply them one after the other to launch or knock back more than 5 around you. As far as I know there aren’t many AoE CC skills that can hit more than 5 (i.e. multi-hit).
Warrior Stomp, Earthshaker etc;
Guardian Shield of Absorption etc;
Engineer Detonate Magnetic Shield, Big Ol’ Bomb, etc;
Elementalist Updraft, Earthquake;
Thief Tripwire etc;
Ranger Entangle etc;
Necro Reaper’s Mark etc;
Mesmer Illusionary Wave and Temporal Curtain Detonate;
Just some that I could think of, and they are all 5-capped skills. Not to mention all the AoE cleave damage in ZvZ fights; those are a lot of 5-capped skills to simply dismiss.

You have a few ground-cast Stability affected CCs in this game, such as the above mentioned Guardian wards, Ele Lightning field, Engi Toss Elixir U (Curtain), Necro Spectral Wall… (non-exhaustive list) which allow you to hit more than 5, but I do not think Engi can do the same with such ease.

My list is also not the be-all-end-all, hence the “get creative”; there must be things I have left out. If you feel you know about everything else and it’s just gadgets you’re trying to work out, awesome.

I tried it, and I love it on fights where I have the space to put it out and leave it alive, but frequently fights will be in cramped enough quarters that that isn’t a possibility. When I can guarantee significant uptime, it’s far superior, but when I can’t I’d much rather have the medkit.

Spam Heal button twice then Detonate the turret or just press interact to stow turret, which reduces CD to 15 seconds. The turret shouldn’t be cleaved down in such a short amount of time if you don’t try to leave it in the open. As John Widdin has said, Heal turret is all about the water field combos. When you spam Heal and get the water field, it’s a 2 second field regardless of whether the turret is alive or not during its existence.
Engineers have a vast array of blast finishers which allows you to spike heal your team for ~3 to 5k at least. Water + Blast = Area Healing (affected by healing power)
Elixir Gun 4
Big Ol’ Bomb
Shield 4
Rocket Boots
Thumper Turret Toolbelt
Detonate (Any) Turret (so with default key binds, 6 + 6 + F1 for Heal Turret self-combo)
And any that I had missed.

I’ve been building a “Rocketeer” meant as a member of a zerg buster group (slick shoes + rocket boots into a zerg for multiple knock downs), but haven’t really been able to test it since Anet’s system keeps matching my server up with a diff time zone (always night capping and no real zvz)

0 0 20 30 20 with boon/prot duration runes and boon duration food (100% prot duration 85% boon duration)

My current problem is “What to do while slick shoes is on cd?”

How do you get out of the zerg afterwards? xD
It’s good vs small numbers, you can knock 1 person down repeatedly and spam Grenades on him. Vs Large numbers those not hit by you will try to kill you…

Slick Shoes is more a life saver in that situation… best to maintain distance and spam grenades.
If you want to be disruptive, as Turbo Whale has said, get a Mine. Shield 4 is a pushback, Big Ol’ Bomb is a Launch, and you also have Thumper Turret. Get creative, as they say.

You can probably replace rifle with Pistol/Pistol and use 30/10/0/10/20 to get gadget CD, Grenadier and Pistol CD. Everything else is up to you.

Why would you want to replace the best engineer weapon with the worst engi weapon? If you’re using pistol at least use a shield.

Blowtorch is decent if you can land Slick Shoes/target is Chilled/Immobilised.
Glue Shot can give you some breathing room, as it’s un-blockable it’s effective against people who just used Elite + Lyssa or someone running with shield raised towards you. If you land it it’s some free grenades and a Blowtorch right there. It’s also not stability-related and melee specs can be kited briefly with this (just follow up with chill).
Pistol is the condi weapon that goes with Rabid gear and P/P is very offensive which is reflected in the traits I chose.

Shield is a pure survival weapon with its CC and finishers (water field spike heals). Shield requires speccing 20 into inventions to lower the CD. Honestly I can’t deal with the 30/40 sec default CD but if you’re good at rationing their usage, awesome. You would also need to pull 20 points out of somewhere, which means you lose one or more of:
Gadget CD
Perma-swiftness on Kit Swap
Perma-vigour on Kit Swap
Grenadier

Your choice really, but I feel Grenades offer the best range with the OP’s given Rabid gear. It has great damage and some control, not to mention a 1500 range. It can and will hit people in a zerg. You can also throw them behind you while running away (just pan camera).
If you don’t like Grenadier, you can opt for Flamethrower or another similarly offensive kit. Incendiary Ammo gives long burn stacks and a bit of small-scale control with pushback and blind (you can blind stomp), but you do have to fight at close range as opposed to max range (1500).

The CD and free boons are more a quality of life thing, if you are willing to let go to take Shield CD. In the same tree you get Stabilised Armour and Protective Shield, good traits, and the 15 minor for Heal recharge at 25%. It’s not a bad trade-off.

so… Since people are talking about FT #4! I shall let you all in a little secret!!

If you wanna use FT #4 to it’s fullest, there is only 1 way! Drop it on the ground and use jump shot on it and get fire shield… sadly, this will stack more burning than FT#4 ever could and it will also give you a few extra might

that’s Napalm to it’s fullest potential!!

Honestly haven’t thought of that… but Fire Aura in a rifle power build won’t be very strong burning, unless you’re crazy and slot Rampagers gear…
Indeed, I can blast finish the field to obtain a short-duration Fire Aura, and that may come in use.

Trying to be humorous. Please don’t take it out of context… FT 4 rarely deters foes trying to spike you and can be useful in drawn-out fights over restrictive terrain… it gives ~1second of burning which is not overly significant. I just feel that when put side-by-side with other FT abilities such as the Incendiary Ammo toolbelt skill or FT3 and FT5, it has a rather low priority.

Pre-emptive teamfight might-stacking is nice, I agree.
More often than not, when i’m trying to bunker a point though, I’d be trying not to apply any field other than water to blast finish area healing to keep myself up.

It can be useful.

Similar to Sylentir and posted in another thread but this is my build…
Strong points are water field blast finish spike healing, ample CC and spike management via proc’d protection boon.
I love Healing turret.
Bomb kit and runes can be switched out to something you like.

Get yourself a Rifle, Grenade Kit, and both Boot utilities.

Slick Shoes and Rocket Boots give you the best mobility in the game. Specced into Gadget CD you basically have a 16 second Ride the Lightning (scales with swiftness and super-speed) that removes mobility-impairing conditions.
Add Jumpshot and Overcharged shot and you have a run-and-gun power Engi.

Chaithh’s Twitch channel has a build covering those and you can look that up if you need ideas.

This is the build I use for Skyhammer. I specced a bit like a Guardian with a lot of control and good spike management. I took all the protection traits as they make you very resilient to spike. If against boon stealers, take Stabilised Armour in inventions instead.
Bomb healing is meh and you’d be better off spiking yourself back up with water field combos. That’s 1k+ each time.
I chose to stack Boon Duration but it’s meh. You can use Melandru or Mercy. Mercy with Elixir R is nice. You can take 409 with it. But then you’ll have to take something other than toolkit for Stunbreak. You can also switch out Bomb kit and put 10 in Tools to get toolkit CD. Your choice really.
Use healing turret for more spike healing and a bit of regen. 15 minor trait of Inventions and Tools will both recharge healing of Medkit at 25% so there’s an overlap… you’ll get spiked down at 25% anyway it’s not so worth it esp this condi-heavy meta. Heal turret removes 2 conditions and don’t require little casts to use to full potential.

Combos:
Big Ol’ Bomb + Healing Turret + Turret Detonate + Shield 4 Detonate (Spike healing + CC)
Heal recharge at 25% = heal up before 25% so you can heal again
Toss Elixir S + Magnet (Skyhammer glass panel quick gib)
Concussion Bomb + Prybar + Static Shot (Confusion stack)

CD not up = dodge
full endurance = dodge
out of endurance = switch to/out of kit
target nearly dead = CC for teammates to kill
bunker trying to get you off point = Elixir X

Water field blast issues?

New lvl 80 Engi here. Starting to work with Healing Turret and the Water Fields. Ran some dungeons last night and it seems that the blast finishers don’t finish half the time. I noticed that if I did Cleansing Burst and then detonated the turret it didn’t always work. I tried different timing between CB and detonate and can’t figure out why it’s not consistent. Also Regenerating Mist seems to have a very short field duration, barely able to kick off another finisher before it’s gone.

Are these bugs or play? Any suggestions are appreciated.

Blood~

Spam heal button twice and then use instant-cast/less than a second blast/leap finishes. The field is very brief and if you try to immediately cast Supply Crate it will likely not combo lots (long 1 second cast).

so you can do something like:
Big Ol’ Bomb (wait 2 secs)
Heal Turret deploy (spam heal button)
Turret ability with water field (field appears)
Big Ol’ Bomb Blast finish + turret detonate blast finish + Shield 4 x2 (spam 4 quickly)
Rocket Boots, Elixir Gun 4 if you’ve got EG, Thumper turret etc.

That should spike heal you for 3k~5k more than normal and CC everything around you. You can use heal turret tool belt skill for another water field to combo with. Just remember field is -very- brief and you need to use almost instant/quick blast finishes.

I’d like to add that Chaithh’s idea of Enhanced Performance and Sigil of Battle + Minor Corruption, with Might duration runes lets you obtain around 1.5k Condition Damage at 12~15 permanent might stacks, in s/tPvP. That frees up your heal (turret) and 1 utility slot for FT/Toolkit etc. You also blow people up incredibly fast and gain the ability to run away/spike heal better. I’d really encourage a look through his ideas… it’s a refreshing take on the HGH concept.

What build is this?

I’ll also add that the best condi spec/class right now is Necro, with Dhuumfire…

I spent all my time playing Guardian bunker in tournaments… My worst enemy was the Necro followed by the burn stacking Engi in prolonged 1v1. I didn’t really connect with how static the Necro felt (it’s more about making zero mistakes and being patient with key skills… i.e. not doing much rest of the time) and I loved knockbacks and blowouts; so my second profession was the Engi, and I played exclusively 4-kit bunker…

I’ll go back to the Guardian at some point though. They both have good sustain and a vast array of control which i like.

it might seem like people go in 1 kit for only 1-2 skills but in reality most skills are useful depending on the situation, some skills are offensive, some are defensive, and even some skills such as “box of nails” are great when trying to get away

Only useless kit skills I would say are…
Elixir F…. cast time on a slow, buggy skill with a weak effect, it’s simply not worth the time to cast it and, no cast time and would be worth it.

FT #4: asides from the fire field (which will be overwritten by any other field near) this skill doesn’t provide any offensive, defensive, utility or tactical use. and ground targeting doesn’t even is worth the time you need use it . I wish it was an Circle shaped Fire field that last for 3-4a with no ground targeting… would be more useful that way

FT has tool-belt skill Incendiary Ammo. It stacks 9 seconds of burning without condi duration, granting immense pressure. You can blind stomp with FT 5. You can kill people with FT 3 on Skyhammer. You can crit people for 2k using FT 2 even in full rabid to get that tiny last bit of health.

FT 4… so pretty. I wonder what it does…

I also feel like HGH is overrated. You have to maintain 20+ stacks to actualy do the damage you can with other runes. This is for WvW by the way, as sPvP has way lower condition damage.

I run with a 1.45k condition damage build, no might stacks. With Might stacking runes I has only 1.2k where I get up to 1.7k with a good stack going. Yes, this is higher, but I also lose diversity in kits and utilities and I only have these burst might stacks every 20 seconds or so. I rather take my 2 kit build with no rocket turrets that’s almost as strong but isn’t a) limited to taking 3 elixir traits and b) uses utilities that help me survive in other ways. With HGH it’s basically kill or be killed. With toolkit, grenades and rocket boots, I can outrun small group of players and kite them very long.

Also, to the OP: I don’t like your suggestion for kits. While buffing them is good, I actually love the engineer playstyle of only swapping in to useful skills. Every other class is limited with a cooldown, making them use lesser skills. We don’t have cooldowns, which makes it so we always use whatever is best for the situation. That’s what seperates the best engineers from the regular ones.

There is always a skill useful that’s not on cooldown and we always have access to them. Gear shield is on cooldown for 3 secs? No problem, swap to something else, use 2 skills and go back. I love this and it essentialy means absolute freedom in playstyle. While I think other things need to be brought up and fixed, kits is not one of them.

Kits usually bring control along with damage and offers unpredictability. You get smoke, fire and light fields and you can leap/blast finish in any of them to gain many benefits (Smoke Bomb combos are nice). To add, Heal Turret + Detonate/Rocket Boots/Shield 4 Detonate/Rifle Leap/Big Ol’ Bomb/Elixir Gun Leap gives you so much spike healing it isn’t even funny. I agree that kits shouldn’t be designed as a “permanent” weapon; Engineers pack lots of odd bits and pieces and they can use whatever they want, whenever they want. There is usually no tell when he CC’s you.

Kits are also too useful compared to gadgets – makes me wonder when will they be up to par. How can you make a 1-time activated ability match the usefulness of having 5 at the click of a button? Sure, some skills may be clutch… but i’ll take a kit over a gadget if I have a spare slot.

Buff Magnet Pull

Usually a stun lights up the side of the screen (visual cue) and prompts a reflex stun break into protective measures…
You can Magnet into Slick Shoes for the knockdown so you can spam grenades on the floor next to him + Blowtorch, and setup for Glue Shot or Elite Supplies… that is if he hasn’t used his CDs to stunbreak/CC you/Blink away from the combo.
You can also Toss Elixir S to ensure you can’t be interrupted/can’t be seen (works 50% of the time…) while casting Magnet…

Engineer already has enough CC as is, lol. Strap on all the control you have and your opponent, lacking stability will be spending 10+ seconds blinded or on the floor… Magnet doesn’t need a buff…

If you mean the update yellow text, there is no way to turn it off. You can however, exit game and restart immediately when it says “new build available. your game will restart in 3 minutes”.

If you need pointers on how to deal with a specific class/ refine your style in a certain profession, you can ask in the related forums. From your description, condis fly everywhere, but do you know what skills cause condi application? Who did what? That takes practice to spot.

u lose waterfall, someone killed someone, wow did u see that, and stuff like that in game. its quite annoying imo. but not really a problem.

i try to see the condi dmg, but i am dead even before i know what hit me, i dont know much about necro/mesmers which seem to be the preferred classes in here.
ill read up their skills a bit.

You can look up the combat log, and the after death damage listing. But to know what skill hit you, you would most likely need to check the class out yourself. Look up some specs and try the classic setups…

Condi necro 0/30/20/0/20 etc
Burst mesmer 20/20/0/0/30 etc
Look up videos on how they deliver those numbers; youtube is a good reservoir of such things.

Try to find tournament PoV of 1 class, those help, and not the montages that only show big crits… they don’t really tell you much.

Practise lots… you’ll get there. There are only so many viable standard builds and their variation, you’ll be able to understand the reasoning behind them one by one.

3+4+5 parts , sound like tPvP to me .

Salluks.6017 , the ncp that u talked to , in order to join a PvP match was a) redhead female , or b) a dude with black hair ?

i joined normal pvp, i dindt wanna join tournament as i think i will pull down others in the team,

i figure tournaments are ranked and therefore more serious?

In tournaments you build for specific roles, Bunker-support, and different types of roamers. They have experience with the specs they are using and go for specific targets and map objectives to win the match.
When you run in a group of 5 players, communication is key to winning team fights. They will often employ Teamspeak 3, Ventrilo or something similar to coordinate bursts, point defence and rezzes.

That said, try solo queuing tournaments to get a taste of what it’s like. You may not win much the first week or so, but you can observe what they do, how they do it. Join a PvP guild of some sort so they can teach you things. 1v1 Duelling servers are ok, but people tend to bring OP 1v1 Duelling specs (well duh…) with them. At the very least, you will be able to see clearly what they are doing, and you will learn to read the tells. Ask questions… they do help if you are polite/persistent. You can also spectate, and look at builds… but playing more is encouraged.

8v8 sPvP is a zergfest, it’s unavoidable salluks.6017. A suggestion is to use a build with teleports/mobility so that you can disengage whenever.
In WvW you can build rather defensive and use high attrition specs like a 0/0/30/25/15 P/D thief spec to win single target fights, but in an 8v8 it’s all about AoE cleave damage. It’s a glory farm. It’s about who can tag the most targets to get the most points while staying alive.

Rank doesn’t matter too much if you are an avid small group WvW’er or someone who is accustomed to competitive PvP. You must know your enemy, what moves will he use in a certain setup, what utilities he will carry, and how he will setup large bursts. PvP is all about countering your enemy, whether your role is to stall, or burst down a target. However rank is an indication of how much time a player has spent in sPvP, and high rankers really are only ahead of you in terms of experience and developed reflexes. We all have the same stats and gear, just different builds and approaches to situations.

I’ll try to address your concerns:
1. in 8v8, please take note of where your teammates are on the map, and check their hp bars. If they are wiping on a point, don’t feed them. Try back capping. When you get 1v2 or 2v3, stall or look for a way out. Be mindful of surroundings and leg it if you’re about to get ganked.

2. Condi spam can be due to necro/engi and they are almost always aimed at a crowd/on point. They can be countered by condi removal or not getting hit at all. Grenades can be dodged, staff marks can be rolled through, and you can CC/blind the caster. You can also gain higher ground/stealth/blink to stay out of the way. Put pressure on the condi caster so he will worry more about keeping himself alive than killing you. Count his skills, what he has used, what to look for. Keep track of damaging conditions like burning and bleeding stacks and remove as soon as they try to burst stack a ton on you.

3. With experience you will be able to hold your own 1v1. Don’t sweat outnumbered since you are likely to die anyway. Play more, rank up, and you will get a feel for countering players. I constantly ask myself what could I have done better.

4. In 8v8 people constantly enter and exit. They farm points and leave whenever they want (like a shopping centre). Just switch teams to balance and always run with the crowd. Not in it, but off side so you can pick targets/react to attacks directed at you.

5. Switch to another 8v8 server; there are lots. Try 5v5 ones too. When you have a solid build and play style and have worked out your 5v5 role (Bunker-Support/Pressure DPS/Burst), try tournaments. They offer a better challenge.

Why so much Skyhammer hate?

On the first day of implementation all people ran their preferred, general specs for the other established maps. The maps before did not have such sudden death mechanics and having bunkers, DPSers (condi) and bursters in good ratio seem to work. We would on occasion use the cannon, fight for it back and forth with an emphasis on defensive 2 node strategy, etc.
However the glass panels and potential to fall off the side, how quick and powerful the cannon was made people realise they should spec for the map… and there were an increasing number of clutch teams and clutch kills. If you don’t spec to counter or mirror them, you cannot accuse of a poorly planned map entirely… you will be against players using the map as an advantage.
That said, how quick you can capitalise on the cannon could use some toning down.
I believe once the complaints come in the map will improve and the suggestions made here can potentially be used to make improvements…

I do believe if someone knocks/fears/pulls you into a hole you can do the same to them… you just have to build accordingly and counter accordingly, think about what CC a class has, how will he use it, will it have tells, what position should i take to avoid being CC’d effectively (i.e. not having back to edge of map/glass panel), and call for assistance if bunker v bunker is going on forever…
It’s not that the map forces you to change spec… it’s the players capitalising on Skyhammer’s mechanics forcing you to counter. Some CC do require less skill to execute than others, though (Toss Elixir S → Magnet pull, Scorpion Wire, Tornado at cannon, Master of Terror + condi duration + Fear).

Solo que might not be a great indicator, but teams running lots of bunkers to utilise cannon can go both ways… not able to hold cannon and relying on massively outplaying your enemy; or relying on cannon to take down clumped enemies in a 3v3 on point. Different builds, different strategies… we will need time to find the perfect compromise in terms of CC and damage.

Asura have the most well done animations in my opinion. I find the way they carry Greatswords/Hammers to be very endearing; they seem to struggle with the weight on one shoulder, and tilt their heads forward to gain momentum. They also seem to have difficulty coming to a complete stop since they are so small and have such little inertia.

They sniff around when idle and their ears dangle when they walk. It’s hard to get bored watching their movements. I was one of those people who are in the MMORPG category (Many Men Online RolePlay as Girls) and rolled exclusively human female toons… but I deleted 2 level 80 humans for a reason. Asura are worth it.

Why should i pick a guardian?

From a role-play perspective they are magical knights. The official description says they use defensive magic to support allies and that is the truth, the Virtues, shouts and weapons such as the staff grant unrivalled boon support. You also have hard, stability-affected CC that gives area control like no other class. Almost everything you do deals splash damage.
You will always be useful in a group as offence/support.
There are full damage builds out there but other classes can be more effective at bursting, and you do need to know what you are doing.

Stand on the Curtain. Leap + Swap on it and you will always get both (unless you are +600 range or blinded/blocked)

Chose the one on the bottom, 4th from left. It’s the body type with the thinnest legs and least bust size. Reason was it looks good with PvP Armageddon/Temple Karma Gear.

90% of the time I hear “Sel-nee” so I guess it’s a unique quirk to the name…
