Dredgehaunt Cliffs: Sadistic Level Design?

The top half isn’t that bad (Basically the half with very little dredge), it’s the southern half which is awful. Not only are Dredge pretty tough, they’re packed really tightly together and the suits are -really- tough to solo. The vista in that huge dredge mining cave is sadistic, and it’s annoying that another vista -requires- a jumping puzzle to get to, and there’s -another- jumping puzzle after that (meaning a JP which requires a JP to even get to).

The Pale Reaver that dies actually really made me upset, you see her a fair bit in one of the Sylvari storylines, but I’ve also seen her in at least three other storylines on non-Sylvari characters. I’ve found the deaths in Orr are much more ‘effective’ when you’ve played through on a few different characters, made different choices and the like, since you see much more of most of the NPCs you meet in Orr: Elle, Zott, Jayne, Tegwyn, Galina, Snarl, and some others I can’t remember off the top of my head.

Order of Whispers - THANK YOU!

I agree, Doern is smoking hot, isn’t he?

More on-topic though, while I love all three Orders, Whispers is probably my favourite, Tybalt being my favourite of the mentors (Even though I love both Sieren and Forgal too), he has the best voice actor in the game in my opinion, and is just so…adorable! Demmi is also a really well-written character too in my opinion. I agree that they could have revealed the Master a bit better, but it wasn’t that bad.

Trehearne however is an abysmal character, as has been said loads in other threads. Worst, most boring VA in the game, which is odd considering everyone finds him really inspiring and charismatic, he’s just mono-tonal and dull. He also just kinda barges into the story as a minor character, rapidly becoming the leader of the only army with a chance against Zhaitan, despite having -no- previous military experience; the player character would have made much more sense, and Trehearne would suit being an adviser a lot better.

In my opinion my favourite part of the Personal Story is the 1-20 bit, the race-based stories which are determined when you make your character. After that it’s the 30-40 part where you help your Order, and Orr is easily near the bottom, some really good quests, but too many god-awful ones (Underwater Cathedral anyone?)

Thoughts on Ascended Gear? [Merged threads]

well considering the only content that use’s that is some endless dungeon with the entire point to grinde out said gear to make it further into said endless dungeon i don’t really consider that being locked out.

If the only point to the dungeon was to get gear to go further into the dungeon then why play it? That’s not the case, there will be high-end rewards that are not related solely to the dungeon. And to get to them you need to get to the higher levels of the dungeon requiring as much infusion as you can get.

And for the zillionth time, this update only includes backpacks and rings because the rest isn’t ready. When they are done there will be ascended items for every slot. I don’t know why people keep arguing that it’s only backpacks and rings.

Vox, again you make things up to reinforce your paranoid whining. -Nowhere- has it stated that the rewards you’ll get deep in the dungeon will be unrelated to the dungeon, it makes more sense if anything to assume the bigger pieces of gear (chestpiece, weapons) will be at the bottom. The point of this will mean the dungeon will be slightly easier to recomplete, same reason in WoW the last boss of a raid drops high level gear.

This is not a simple case of “if you don’t like infusion don’t play the dungeon.” Many of us have been waiting for the return of challenging elite areas like we had in GW with elite rewards. What we get is mini-WoW complete with a fresh gear grind every time new raid content is released. If we wanted that, we’d be playing that. If you wanted that, why did you come to a game that had all of its pre-release marketing saying it wouldn’t be that and was the successor to a game that didn’t increase its gear stats for 7+ years?

Where exactly did it say they’d be adding more sets after Ascended? Most of this backlash is all assumption.

To the people who are saying “I didn’t buy this game to grind dungeons I just wanted to stroll about in the world and do my thing and enjoy dynamic events la la la”…

Are you actually doing that? Are you actually going back to zones and re-experiencing the events and the world? Or is this just an ideal that you wish you could do, but never actually could get yourself to do?

Maybe this is why Anet is being flexible now with their original philosophy, because they see that despite their own ideals of having players go out into the world and just “having fun” people simply don’t do that anymore.

People never Did. i mean hell look at the RPG’s of yeaster year they were FAR more “grindy” than this game.

even game’s like mario yes you never had gear you needed to progress but you still needed to gather your little extra live’s and beet each level one by one and if you died OMG you had to start all the way over from the begaining.

most gamer’s look for some form of progression in there game’s whether it be level to level ((to see the end)). Gear/stat upgrade’s.

I have no problem with Gear progression as long as it never becomes as steep as what we see in WOW

I just potter about having fun with the content. Never set foot in a dungeon ( instance with single group of players is not epic to me – it just feels small)

Looks like my money is no longer required by anet. No worries – will find something else to spend my spare cash on… Gin maybe?

When you don´t run dungeons, why would you want that kind of gear? oO It´s not required to play as usual.

Who do you care what some one else wants in their game and on their char?
Trolling is an art you fail at on so many lvls

People throw around the word ‘troll’ now as a general insult to people who don’t agree with them, it’s silly. He’s not being a troll, he’s not saying the person can’t play the game whatever way they want.

What he’s saying is that the -only- content where you’ll need this gear is the new dungeon, which is likely to be the same place where you actually -get- the gear. If you don’t do dungeons, you wont be doing this and so you won’t need Ascended gear. Exotics, Rares, heck, even Fine gear is enough to clear pretty much all other content.

And before someone brings up WvW, exotics are almost on par with Ascended, the numbers on them are so similar that skill is what will determine who’s better there.

I read the blogpost again and noticed a little detail:

Ascended items (rings, backback) do not have a rune-slot. Rune-stats are worked into the item.

So unless you want to spec for a very specific way these items might not be as useful as one might think. Technically the new tier has better stats, (which is normal for a new tier) BUT those stats are given and can’t necessarily be individualized to go well with your build. You might want an Exotic Ring instead of a Ascended, depending on your build.

It’s bad though that it looks like we have to go to the new dungeon in order to get the Ascended Ring in the first place. The mats for infusion are probably the rewards for getting farther in the dungeon (which would make sense) and balancing will be much easier for Anet if the players stats aren’t random but given (through the new Ascended items) —> much easier to finetune difficulty for really difficult encounters.

If you look at the stats on the ascended ring vs. the exotic ring…the stats on the ascended are significantly better than the exotic, even considering the gem slotted.

What rings were -you- looking at? I see +5 Power, +5 Precision and +3% Magic Find, hardly enough to be called ‘significantly better’. The gem stats are built into the ascended ring because the slot you get on it will likely only be able to hold very specific bonuses which will probably only be effective in that new dungeon.

It’s annoying when trying to get around (especially in Orr), but my main gripe with it is in Jumping Puzzles. Because they felt the need to cram mobs in so many of them, if you get into combat with one and then jump to another platform/another level, the mob evade-bugs but you’re stuck in combat with it until you relog, really annoying to have to do that repeatedly in some of the JPs.

Once they’re all dead the NPCs insta-res and you can nuke down the Mouth until he summons more floating weapons, the NPCs die and you can just do the same again. Not too hard if you do it this way.

Dungeon Difficulty - My thoughts

Ridley.3691

I can agree with that, if they made hearts and events a bit harder and put more emphasis on learning tactics that are required in dungeons, possibly from a tutorial area, it would help a lot, though I still think that trash health pools and damage could be reduced by about 20-30% for story mode.

Dungeon Difficulty - My thoughts

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Ridley.3691

Ridley.3691

I know this thread has probably been made before, but I couldn’t find a thread myself that I felt was general enough to just post my thoughts on dungeons, so I made this.

I personally believe after having ran a couple of dungeons and seeing changes ANet have made to dungeons since release, that the difficulty they want dungeons to be is too high. The very fact there are two modes (Story and Explorable) should mean that one is easy and doable by nearly all players, and the other is harder and meant to provide better rewards and challenge for those that want it. I even read before release that this was the case.

I was excited when my guild got together to try Ascalonian Catacombs (Story Mode) and the difference in difficulty from levelling/events was -huge-, getting 2-shotted, running back, getting 2-shotted again. I understand it’s going to be harder, and practice makes perfect, so after using my dodging more and focusing more on survivability things did get a little better, but we were still getting killed loads and most trash fights ended up being zergs from the waypoint. It also seemed stupid that the actual bosses were a lot easier than the trash, which have too much health and could do with having their damage reduced.

It being the first dungeon I really got a blow to my self-esteem at this, if i’m doing so badly here, I’ll never be able to do the ones later on. Then I heard that apparently Caudecus’ Manor was easier, so we headed there. Unfortunately, it was right after ANet buffed the place and we ended up in much the same situation there, wipe after wipe after wipe until we gave up and all felt like crap with a fair amount of silver wasted on repair bills.

I’m all for explorable mode being really tough and all, but Story Mode is supposed to be the easier version open to everyone, but it’s so difficult already, and from what I’ve heard from others, there’s no difficulty curve going through the dungeons in turn, apparently the difficulties of the dungeons are a bit random as you gain access to new ones. And before people say I should just get better gear, I had pretty good gear for my level when I tried these dungeons, it shouldn’t be a ‘requirement’ to be decked out in on-level-rares to be able to finish these.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that Story Mode dungeons should be made easier, as it scares off a lot of people new to them and is frankly too difficult.

Personal Story Difficulty Unacceptable

in Personal Story

Posted by: Ridley.3691

Ridley.3691

My problem with the Personal Story is that the difficulty curve isn’t so much as curve and a line that randomly zigzags. It’s mostly luck in what choices you make and if they lead to ‘that one quest’, as there are quite a few quests which are far harder than the others.

The early human one to stop bandits poisoning the well springs to mind, I did it with a friend and we both had pretty decent gear and we still both died loads to the neverending waves of bandits spawning. The equivalent quests you’d do with the other human origin options weren’t nearly as hard and were much more enjoyable. The worst thing about this is that this quest is a choice, the other option to save your friend was a ridiculously easy quest in comparison.

I also agree that class can alter the difficulty a fair but, doing story quests on my warrior or guardian is a lot easier than on my mesmer or elementalist, even with similar gear and traits.

The Female Human epidemic

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ridley.3691

Ridley.3691

The problem quite simply is that a lot of people have their own logic when creating a character, and refuse to open their mind to anyone else’s logic, hence why often people get so defensive about their character and accusing others of being somehow ‘wrong’ for making their character different to their’s. Quite frankly the whole point of character creation is to make who you want, a guy playing a guy, a girl playing a girl, a guy playing a girl, a girl playing a guy, a human playing an asura, and asura playing a charr (Okay so that last one is unlikely to come up too often), it doesn’t matter and it’s quite frankly none of their business.

It’s down to personal choice anyhow, some people want to look at something attractive, some people want to play as someone more relatable, some people want to escape from reality and play something completely different, that’s pretty much it.

I really don’t see what’s wrong with asking for this, people aren’t awful people for being concerned about getting an achievement they’ll need to wait a year to complete. Yes, there’s a hurricane and obviously it’s important to prepare as much as you can and ensure you’re loved ones are safe. Then what? Should they huddle together in the dark while the hurricane blows around them like on TV? No, more likely they’ll want to distract themselves from it. And this is coming from someone not affected by it so you know.

Also, I can’t see what would be so difficult about adding some NPC in Lion’s Arch for a few days after the end of Halloween who teleports players to the Mad King’s Party (Which seems to be Act 4). I mean it can’t be that hard to code surely.

in Suggestions

Posted by: Ridley.3691

I know it was ANet’s intention to bring endgame to all levels, but the side-effect of that is that upon reaching level 80, you don’t really unlock -anything-. Pretty much all level ranges have access to Events, Hearts, Skill Challenges, Vistas, sPvP, WvW, even world bosses, which is great, but it makes level 80 feel empty. I mean all we really unlock are dungeons and new zones to travel in, but it would be nice to add something new that only level 80s could do, even if it’s rather small, because once getting to 80, getting decent gear and getting 100% world completion, there’s not much else to really do (beyond grinding for even better gear).
