Gw2 and the state of Esport

The forums are obsessed with esports. The devs never have been—they usually say things like “I think we can get there” or “we’re going to keep making the game as good as we can.” In other words, they know you don’t just “make” an esport. You make a game as good as you can, and see what happens with it.

Somehow, the forums have twisted those words into some kind of “promise.” It’s a goal, or a dream. Not a promise.

As far as I know guild wars 2 was marketed as esports before the game was even released. They hyped everyone up especially the gw1 pvp crowd. Now that the Devs realized it is easier to say we are esports they have quieted down

The game is not ready for a expasion the optimization is terrible lots and lots of bugs etc…. wow is perfect in almost any aspect they can do that i bet if arena net realease a expasion they will lose half of ppl and i dont know if they can afford that

i bet in wow they dont disconnect 4-5 times per day

If you are disconnecting 4-5 times everyday in GW2 I suggest you run Memtest (or whatever it’s called) and search your comp for bad ram. This game seems VERY sensitive to bad ram. I had that exact problem an it is TOTALLY fixed now that I replaced the bad ram.

Again I say THIS game is sensitive to bad ram it seems because any other game I played with said bad ram I had NO problems with and didn’t even know I had any until I played this. So once again, do yourself a favour and go test for it.

What does ram have to do with disconnecting? Unless he meant bsod

Again, another Living Story, another set of RNG gem store weapons, another gem store Armor.
Well, I guess time to grind gold again since I don’t want to spend god knows how much money gambling on Black Lion chests.

I’d have to say get use to it, ’cuz thats all they seem to want to do. Sure we maybe get a piece here or there (Scarlet shoulder thing, fused gauntlets) but never a full set. (And does anyone even use the Scarlet shoulder thing?)
Same goes for the weapons, why does it pretty much always have to use those kitten tickets?

Simply because people use real money to buy them. If they made the armor/weapons a reward for beating a living story boss then they wouldn’t profit

Anet struggles with rewarding players. The dungeon path rewards make no sense. How does se path 2 only give 1 gold when it takes much more time to complete than the other 2 paths? Mindless champion train zergs reward players way too much gold compared to other aspects of the game

I hope they stay clear of achievement rewards other than tourney wins. It’s pretty bad when you enter a match and 3 people rush home and to cap it and you ask why they say they need to work on dailies….

Achievements have ruined many aspects of the game I attempted wvw and my server purposefully said we are going to lose smc and then recap it after to work on achievements. This was from a commander and players that were on teamspeak. It was pretty sad to see smc flipped over 5x in an hour so that players can get achievements.

Tourney wins/rewards should be much more substantial than hotjoin this is pretty self explanatory. I also agree with the other player who stated that rewards don’t make a game playable. I use to play counter strike 1.6/source and warcraft 3 dota for years there were no achievements during the time I played the game play was rewarding enough

During big zergs such as tequatl or wvw sometimes when I take a screenshot the game will crash and go to the crash report popup. Any ideas what might cause this?

Not sure why they didn’t keep the chests and added the bags for a bonus for the duration of the Halloween festival. Not really surprised anet doesn’t even seem to play their own game or they are completely oblivious.

i cant even open the trick or treat bags. whats up with that?

You can’t open them in a PvP map or heart of the mists. Try going to a pve map to open them

I don’t see any difference between GW1 and 2. GW1 = I want something expensive -> uwsc 24/7. GW2 = I want something expensive -> champ farm 24/7

Champ farming is much more mindless than uwsc or doasc or any other sc in gw1 was.

For some bosses in GW2, you can just stand somewhere with a ranged weapon, hit 1 on autoattack, and go make yourself a sandwich or watch a youtube video. The only thing more mindless in GW1 was 9 Rings.

And that is why so many players champ farm it is so easy and the reward for doing it is pretty well

You’ll never have the chance to appear on the leaderboards because more than 40% are dailies and probably 10-20% are temporary content achievements.

Who cares about rank? If you good player, you will win Those 50-60r farmers.
It’s so funny when you see 40+ r at the bottom scoreboard, guys who made unforgivable mistake during match. Not saying to offense someone, but mostly warriors (also best pve farmers) necromancers and engineers.

We’ve taken a few steps to address this so far (turning off tournament commands, disabling glory gain if tournament commands are enabled, rewarding glory at the end of the match), and we are continuing to work toward completely stopping this behavior.

That’s great and all Allie. However are you going to do anything to the people that already severely abused and exploited this?

The thing is you need to exploit early in gw2 before it gets patched as long as you don’t gain massive gold you won’t get banned

This bug has been here since release I don’t know how it hasn’t been fixed. Not sure what exactly causes it guessing it’s the combination of a knockback and a stun at the same time. I’ve also had it happen with fears. After it happens you can’t move at all unless you use a leap/tele. And no I wasn’t immobilized.

Jesus Christ. Prior to watching this GvG video, I almost thought ( from what it sounded like ) that it might be a good deal to have as a form of competitive PvP officially. Wow, freaking Fort Aspenwood and Jade Quarry in GW1 would have been better candidate than this mess.

There is no way in Hell, that I’d ever want this introduced as such. Frankly, we need more Devs like this with the same opinion.

I’m running an i7-2600k @ 4.5ghz/570gtx/8gb ddr3 ram. I can max out this even but get 20-30fps which isn’t playable. I end up putting everything on low for this event.

I would say the offender here would be the fact that good AI costs server power, but isn’t AI server-side in GW1 as well?..

(I haven’t played much of GW1, but why does it sound so much better than the sequel in many ways?)

Guild Wars 1 was a superior game in some ways, this is true..but not quite as superior as many of those who are commenting would have you believe…and yes, I was a huge fan of Guild Wars 1, and still find it enjoyable on the rare occasions I log back in. But there are many deficiencies in the game as well, that some people seem to ignore.

Well gw1 was released around 8 yrs ago you would think they would improve upon stuff

It’s true the most difficult part is getting enough players and organization. The more players involved the less impact you have other than people on turrets spamming 2 and maybe commanders yelling at people to stack on them.

If you mess up during this big zerg fest nobody will notice because there are so many players and anyone can enter since it is open world. If you mess up in a dungeon or solo content there is much more impact. It’s the reason zerg events are so popular

Since the patch I have been getting huge delays 2-5seconds and rubber banding all over the place starting around 5-6pm server time. Any suggestions on what might be causing this? I can play other games fine use the internet and download without any lag.

Well you do consider SAB tribulation mode difficult – using your logic that game mode (without a guide) requires:

- enough memory to remember where not to step each time you die.
- enough dexterity to make the jumps and dodge the attacks.
– enough endurance to farm enough continues (regular continue coins or either gems/gold for infinite)

If that’s difficult then so is Tequatl imo. Opinions may vary. Pretty much everyone from my guild that bothers with it beat SAB tribulation.

It is most likely because SAB and Liadri could be solod meaning if you mess up you don’t have 80 other people to carry your dead weight/afkers/trolls. I can tag tequatl a few times and then go afk and come back to a free prize or event failure

I agree don’t ress dead players if you do they won’t learn from their mistakes and will continue to rely on you to ress em. A player kept yelling out to be ressed for over 2minutes it made no sense he could have ran back over 20x instead he sat there waiting to be ressed

You can be the best player in the game and this event will still fail because it demands large numbers and there aren’t any restrictions on who can participate. Not sure what is so elite about this content if it was instanced it would be easily done there are too many factors you can’t control in open world content

The problem with making it a guild mission is that would make many players unable to do the content at all unless they joined a large guild. Most small-medium guilds can’t even unlock, yet alone complete many of the guild missions as they are now. A fact that riled the community and killed off many small guilds.

Yes. I did. It would still require being a part of a decent-sized guild. I’ve no problem with instanced content. My problem is purely with making instanced content require being part of a decent sized guild. Make it not require a guild and I’d have no problem with your suggestion.

I’m going to give them some credit and assume that a big part of the failure rate right now is people don’t know how to play this.

Give it time. GW1 had a lot of high level content you had to either figure out or fail. It’s nice to see something like that.

There is a huge difference between open world content and instanced content

Did it on my max size fatty norn made it much more difficult. Wasn’t difficult tbh it comes down to trial and error/memorization and having a lot of time. I didn’t get disconnected during any of my attempts but I would rage if I spent over 2hrs in a map and got disconnected. There should be a feature so you can log back into your last saved checkpoint
